easa discussion RE:EASA is most honestly thrilled to get responses from our fellow Easians to our event proposal. People thinking and caring about the course EASA is taking, and provoking the discussions about it, proves the need to reconsider the event’s form and purpose. It also supports our aim to create the next event with the joined forces of every one of us. We were also glad to see that the pinpointed concerns expressed through those discussions are in line with our goals. Through recent EASAs we’ve sensed the awakening from a self-created and self-orientated dream. Yet, it needs a further push: support, framework and focus: an overall reconsideration of the way it acts. It needs to open up from its own boundaries and refocus its aims towards the social, temporal and spatial context. To be responsible. To be a catalyst. With that in mind, the EASA’s focus should ultimately shift from the “random construction” barely in touch with the overall theme. We wanted to address that by reflecting on the constructional workshops as one of our main concerns. Restructuring the whole process from setting the task to picking and executing the workshops will ultimately deal with the very issue of integrating the theoretical discourse into the construction process, moreover, it will be its core. For each aching space, proposed as the workshop’s focus, we will give the tutors a chance to react to it with whatever means and tools they find convenient, emphasizing the awareness, high understanding of the context and a relation to our overall theme. The end-format of the workshops will be the result of the interaction of all the actors of an issue: the space itself, tutors, locals, organizers, our relations, emotions and visions. We want to express our full trust in tutors as responsible open-minded professionals who can see the big picture and we would like to invite them to an open collaboration.

We encourage you to create the next EASA volume with us. We start by reflecting on overall EASA’s goals. Our understanding of the organizers´ role is to provide a platform, method, a framework if you will, through which every one of you can shape the next year’s event. Our RE:EASA idea will already start to shift from words to practice at the first stage: forming the final concept - together. Stay tuned to get informed on how to take part, and don’t hesitate to express freely in the meantime. Question, answer, provoke. Pusa, ćao, bok, RE:EASA team

the end is near, so let the blues begin.

Tomorrow is the bittersweet day when we say goodbye to each other and return to our normal lives. It won’t be easy but we will all survive it. After each and every EASA going home becomes harder and harder. I feel like tears shed increase exponentially by every event. But I don’t mind it. It is just the overflowing love I have for this community. These two weeks we spend together, sharing everything and losing a sense of privacy are years in normal friendship time. One becomes so close so quickly with people it is hard to even grasp how it happened and when. When was the first time we spoke to each other? When did our friendship actually start? It all blends and it simply doesn’t matter because I’m going to miss all of you my dearest friends. One fact that helps with the EASA blues is the knowledge that in one year another EASA is going start, you’ll get to see all the EASA people again and it feels like yesterday when you last met.

THIS IS A PLACE FOR YOUR TEARS THIS IS A PLACE FOR LAUGHTER THIS IS A PLACE FOR LOVE THIS IS EASA.

toastie tales The single most significant element of EASA 2017 has to be the ‘toast’ or ‘toastie’ and it would be a crime for umbrella to ignore this phenomenon. The melted cheese sandwich has become a key element of the EASA party, it is the grand finale! The cheese toastie fits into the classic post night out food category ‘starch + cheese’ the hot stringy filling warm in the hands Bearing comfort to those only just understanding how drunk they are and who they might have kissed. or a great companion to chatting shit with good friends. It it seems bizarre that the cheese toastie has not made it to the late night ‘restaurants’. Many fashion trends start in the architectural profession so watch out for toasties increased popularity and be happy that you ate toasties ‘before they were cool’. We have compiled a selection of reviews, comments and stories for you to enjoy:

“The most spiritual toastie I’ve ever had, it is wrong to charge for this! It would be like having to pay to enter a church.” - Allessandro Marini

“This is like Lambas bread... a sustenance on the way to mordor!” (see lord of the rings) - Nicholas Tonna “Manna from Heaven! (Food that God gave miraculously to the Israelites in the Exodus) Toastie = Life” - Jean Ebejer heterotopia There is exciting year ahead for EASA. First of all the Finns are taking the INCM as far north as it is possible at this moment, to show Easians polar conditions - something the most of us are not experienced not even in the slightest and in the summer we are expecting something re:volutionary to happen in Croatia, and it is not temperatures above 25°. But something completely new is going to be added to Easian timeline because in September of 2018 a group from Italy is making their own event, Eterotopia. The remote location in Sardinia is going to become a place for students of architecture and young professionals. Eterotopia is a play on words, “H” is a letter in Italian language that is not pronounced, so if you want to sleep in a fancy accommodation you would go to ‘otel ‘illton. Heterotiopia is one of the hottest terms in architecture for some time. It comes from “hetero” which means different and “topos” which is a place, both in from Greek. It is one of those elusive concepts on which you can’t really put a finger on until you start to recognize it as a phenomenon all around you. Heterotopias are places that are distortion in ordinary time, space and society. We can see them as pockets in Cartesian system that have their own set of rules and atmospheres. “Other places” and places of otherness - heterotopia is area of refuge from common order of life. The term is mostly referential to famous essay by Michael Foucault, in which he describes types and forms heterotopias. Cemetery, a boat, boarding school are just some of those, but their program is not necessarily what makes them other places. Space is a mental discipline – the limits of space are limits of our perception of it. After the ’90 the designs that were constantly emphasizing the networks, streams and overlapping grids somehow the discipline realized the danger to that kind of approach to space. It was often resulting in greedy devouring of land, unpleasant congesting and justifying horrors of urban-planning around the world. New generation of architects often deal with limits, a bare foundation of architectural language. But borders are not used as excluding elements but protection against space that is becoming largely homogenized, losing its value. Just like most of the presentations bidding for next EASA are, Italians tickled our imagination with their etheric concept but we all know that the Easian eyes will be looking towards Sardinia next September and we hope they hit just as they aimed high. Marin

“I was passed out on the sofa at info point and some B*!%# stole my toastie!” - Tracez Sammut “I bought my friend a toastie and he has not bought on for me in return, he will not get a christmas card this year.” - Anon Much gossip has been flying around regarding the profit made from the sales of the cheese toasties. It has been noticed that Slava has a new coat and a particualrly shiny watch, is this a coincudence? It has been rumored that the profits will be going towards a EASA helicopter. The three tokens charge has been hitting EASians hard and it is possibly time to drop the price to two tokens and Toasties past 03.30 to be free so to encourage the EASA party spirit. Initial toastie capacity was minimal the infopoint staff battled with the MELISSA MV505 750W toastie maker. The handle was broken and didn’t close the machine was clamped tight by placing beer and small animals on top to achieve the crisp edge and solid seal. They have since upgraded purchasing the all new EPIQ 750W and BILTEMA 800W two of each now make the express service. The infopoint staff tell me that the extra 50W capacity of the BILTEMA makes a ‘thrilling experience’.

lantern We all have seen the amazing patterns of bricks here in Fredericia, so did tutors of Lantern and got really inspired. From that it wasn’t hard to found a sponsor for bricks. Next step was to find the object that could contribute local life. So they talked with locals and found out that Fredericians really like bonfires but they don’t have a safe and cosy place to do them. Lantern was born. Now it is building time and different patterns are forming. Local specialist also came by and gave some tips to improve the patterns. Lantern is growing rapidly and soon they are planning to have a bonfire party as well. So keep your eyes and ears opened and join them to have some marshmallows or sausages.

superdraft ‘Superdraft’ team also brought an international studio called WAI Architecture Think Tank to EASA. WAI is an architectural practice which focuses on the understanding and execution of architecture from a panoramic approach. On Wednesday EASAns had a chance to listen to one of their lectures were WAI presented their critical texts and manifestos.

unline We would like to apologize to the crew of Unline as their interviewer was a bit under the influence this morning and fresh from the bar. Unline is making a linear, permeable membrane on top of the ramparts opposite Bulows which provides an amazing experience, especially at night. Our sincere apologies, and here’s a pretty picture too.

express your cell

When you walk straight to the sea from the door of the accommodation, you´ll be facing a very beautiful view. Down by the beach the wooden frame structure by `Express your cell´ workshop is already standing in its full size. Today all the participants have been working on their individual design task to fill in one of the square holes on the structure with the design with hospitality as a starting point. The beautiful frame structure will be partly covered with cells of hospitality that all represent different approach to hospitality. The diversity of materials, form and backgrounds of all the participants will give the space spiritual dimension. We are so much looking forward to see the diverse and result tomorrow!

penelope By the beach the `Penelope´ workshop is flourishing. The garden surrounded by white wooden frames is the heart of the pavilion. The green garden will be surrounded by white wooden frames that will create circular gateway around the garden. Frames will be connected from the inner side so that from between every frame one can enter the heart of Penelope. Everything seems to be in time within ´Penelope´ since the garden is ready as the frames as well. Today the ´Penelope` team will be working on putting up the frames and cleaning the site so it seems that everything will ready by tomorrow!

inter of course Hard work, painting poles, bruised shoulders, the inter(of) course crew has been trough a lot. Today the installation in front of the city hall is ready, luring the people to take a walk trough the pole forest. This morning it was used as a playground for many happy children, attending a teen concert on the square. Although unintended, this scenario is after all a good one since there is nothing more gorgeous in the world than happy kids, so congrats guys.

functions and fictions

the unborn monuments

The secret pool opened today with a beautiful blue jungle inside of it. The creatures of the water welcome you at the entrance and there begins your trip trough the fictional, added to the bare function of the pool. Interesting installations, ambiental music and the chlorine in the air drives you far away from the reality. And the best part; watch for the leopard in the pool. In front of the entrance there is a fictional pool where the workshops physical work has been shown. We want to thank the girls for a beautiful ride, and for the blue water.

Tutors of the unborn monuments had really a lot of different ideas, different projects in their mind but not all of them could come to life. From there they decided to do smaller scale. This way all the projects in Fredericia and inspired by Fredericia could come alive. They learned more about Fredericia, its essence and its history keeping in mind also the theme hospitality. Tutors were really amazed how a city that is so discrete can promote such a sense of diversity and unity. The topic was set and now there was time for workshop. Tutors asked their participants to really be free with creating and bringing their ideas into realisation throughout their monuments. Each of the model has its own history behind it. The monuments present statements, ideas or manifestos that meaningful for the creators and are cast individually but in the end they form one unified piece. And this is what the unborn monuments really is about- through diversity achieve unity. The unborn monuments wasn’t a linear workshop so every morning a new topic was introduced that lead to different discussions that left their mark in the final ideas that were used for creating the monuments. It was an interesting discussion that lasted throughout the two weeks in EASA that lead to one really beautiful piece of different monuments at the beach.

hi

When we first met a Hi person, the workshop was figuring out how to fix their light array to the pier without drilling into it. The second time it was a panicked participant holding down their booth because it had been blown away across the beach. Even though ‘it wasn’t really a good time’, we had a little chat while waiting for reinforcements with staple guns. Their light array uses visual input converted by diffusers to produce a beautiful dancing circle of pulsating lights glowing above the water and reflecting on the surface. We are really happy everything turned out great and that no ships drove into the beach during the shows, guided by the hypnotizing glow. It was really inviting, guys.

babettes’s

Named after the 1987 film Babette’s Feast, this workshops main interest is food and how it can facilitate interactions between people. The main goal is building a people’s kitchen in Fredericia, which they have finished amazingly! The opening was attended by the participants and Fredericia’s own Robin Hood / Santa Clause persona - Bobbie Nielsen ‘Bernie’. Bernie runs a local charity in Fredericia and has the biggest charity facebook group in Denmark - ‘Vi er til for at hjaelpe hinanden’. The charity invites all people to take anything they need: food, clothes, toys… He will be taking over the kitchen after EASA leaves and organizing weekly events for people of all kinds to meet and cook together. While still in Fredericia, Babette’s is organizing a feast at the main square and a children’s day event at a nearby shopping mall.

make yourself a(t) home What is your personal process of appropriating space? Is it always the same? What does it depend on? These are only some of the questions that have been appearing in bold, red lettering around the Easa locations. They are meant to be a tool for initiating discussion about hospitality and what makes home a home - the same discussion the participants were having in their intimate space at Bulows. The very beginning was about sharing personal experiences of the participants’ homes on the large scale (country, city), as well on the small one (own room) but the discussion grew quickly. In the next, unplanned phase, each participant focused on one aspect of ‘home’ they found most interesting and produced an independent installation with it in mind. Some of the explored themes were privacy, perception, senses, nature, sculptural interpretation... The outcome of the workshop is very good as half of the four installations dig really deep into the topic(one out of four were missing all the information as the wind at the beach is so strong). Taking nature and humans needs into very abstract level makes you really think of what is important for you. Visit the instalations at Bulows yourself and reflect on home a bit. We, ourselves, think this is a fairly simple question - home is at Easa. Where the heart is.

thank you organizers helpers tutors participants = easians

gossip girl Damn. It seems the flu has not slowed you guys down.

For the first time in EASA a couple took a step towards more settled future as a beautiful beach wedding was organized to celebrate the love of this young couple. The couple sealed their promise by jumping into the freezing sea and kissing as the crowd chanted “here comes the bride, all dressed in white”. I wonder where the wedding night suite was located. It has come to my attention that people are getting lazier and lazier in trying to find privacy as one couple was seen walking towards the workshop area and as snogging session escalated into a full blown lovemaking at the parking lot while local early birds were already having their morning jog. Oh you nasty animals! Lest keep the public indecency to a minimum. We have all heard how it was received in Malta. There has apparently also been a couple enjoying some unforgettable moments in the unborn monuments workshop space so if you saw someone oddly covered in way too much gypsum dust all over their body, you have seen the culprits. And please! Clean up after your selves! It’s good you are having safe sex but nothing is nastier that cleaning someone else’s used condoms off the floor. We also found one evening one of our own snogging passionately in the Bülows café space. Damn, you Lithuanians. One of the couples of sangria night is still sneaking around enjoying cheeky sneaky couple moments which is absolutely incredibly cute. I wonder if this is something that will stick. I hope it will. So EASA has come to its end. For the last night, stay safe. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do and enjoy your selves my crazy little animals. This is me signing off for the last time this year! See you in Croatia. You know you love me

safety, security and sanitary rules for the warehouse: As you might be aware of, the accommodation we´re using is a former tobacco warehouse. And the stress is on ´former´. Since industrial sites get new functions everywhere, this building´s connection to tobacco is one of the memories, so: NO SMOKING INSIDE The ancient Greek civilisation has produced a lot of interesting architecture. And it has remained for thousands of years because of the stone structure. Our warehouse might not be that ancient, butfor sure it is not a completely stone construction. Wood is inflammable! So: NO OPEN FIRE INSIDE Even if these rules are followed, the unfortunate case of emergency might occur. -and if We´ll have an evacuation: we will have to be able to get us out. As we do not have the green lights on the floor leading to the emergency exit (read next point, why´s that) we need to keep an open path to the staircase and outside door. So: KEEP FREE THE MARKED PATHS ON THE FLOOR Old buildings are flexible, but there are limits to temporary provisions. So, we have to do with a partly old electricity network, and that´s why we have to BE CAREFUL WITH THE ELECTRICITY In the old days it was not such a big problem if rats came into warehouse. They would kill themselves by an overdose of nicotine anyway. But the tobacco has gone (read first point) and so have the rats. But if we don´t keep our place clean, they´ll soon come back. That´s why everybody is asked: NO FOOD INSIDE UMBRELLA 2nd ISSUE 27th of July 1999 KAVALA note:
