EASA Denmark 2017 - issue1

Thoughts from an organizer

As an old tutor of Umbrella and now one of the organizers of this year’s EASA, I’ve been very much looking forward to seeing this first issue of Umbrella 2017 in the flesh now it’s here! My way of becoming an organizer in the Danish team has been quite a long one. I started off as a participant in the Finnish team in Cadiz in 2011 and became an NC for Finland afterwards.. I tutored Umbrella twice and last year a workshop together with Thea, an other of this year’s organizers, and Hermioni, a previous NC for Greece. But life happened and now I’ve been cozy in Copenhagen for three years, which lead me to be part of the Danes. We started thinking about organizing an EASA two years ago in EASA Links at Malta. Even though two years sounds like a long time to be planning, it flew by way too fast. It’s been exciting, and a little bit scary, to see it taking shape. We’ve had a lot of challenges on the way but it has been great to notice how much you can achieve with hard work and a bit of luck on the side! Our greatest strength as an organizing team comes from the variety of people we have in it. We are multiple nationalities, recent graduates and bachelor students, first time EASAians and someone like me who’s been around for seven years, we are thinkers and doers. Just like the EASA community, we come in many shapes and forms! Until now the event has been all ours, the organizers, but last week it was handed to you, the participants, tutors and helpers of EASA. It’s really thrilling to see how incredibly well people take charge and responsibility for our shared micro kosmos. We’ve done this event for you and are looking forward to see what you do with the framework!

With love, Pauli

saru’s conversation with

Damian Marchlewicz is a Polish chef who was recently crowned a winner of Polish Hell’s Kitchen. He is a true powerhouse in the kitchen environment with his impressive culinary skills. We are lucky to have him here at EASA.

How come you decided to come to EASA?

My friend Caspar who is one of the organisers over here invited me to be a chef at this event. Also the other Danish chef decided not to come here because he wanted additional money that the organisers would be paying him under the table. So the organisers decided not to go with that.

Have you heard of Action Bronson? A lot of people think that you look like that famous rapper. He’s my personal hero.

The first time I heard of him was when you showed me his music video. I personally don’t think that I look like that guy.

Are you a fan of vegans?

Next question.

What’s your favourite herb?

Horse-raddish.

What do you cook for yourself?

I have someone else to cook for me. What’s your favourite snack?

Lay’s chips.

What was the first thing you made that you were really proud of?

I don’t remember.

Is there any chef that is blowing your mind these days?

I would say Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver.

fredericia - a very brief history After a fortified encampment was destroyed by the Swedish, king Frederick III founded the improved Fredericia which later withstood an attack by Schleswig-Holstein rebels. After closing its factories the run-down industrial harbour bloomed into a cozy little town. LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS

drinks & food KURT’S KAFFEBAR If you have some time off your workshop and are looking for a relaxing space to have coffee or tea, Kurt’s is the place to be! Many locals recommended this sweet coffee place so we had to try it out. With helpful Kurts and comfy interiors it’s a nice place to hang out. We suggest you ask about their tea as they have great variety to choose from. We give it 7/8 love points. Check out Vivaldi across the street for a good meal.

second hand shops GARN KÆLDERG, AXELTORVS GENBRUG

The town has two beautiful charity-type secondhand shops with absurdly low prices. They are the best place to stock up your EASA living area or buy a painting of a crying child for your grandmother. Full of clothes and home accessories, the shops survive on local donations and the sweet old ladies make sure the proceeds get to where they are supposed to. One shop sends help to India and the other, Christian one, helps social cases in Denmark. If you want to learn more go say hi and look around - we’re sure Jenny and the others would love it!

beer THE ENGLISH PUB

Best beer place in the town, The English pub. You should also check out the food there, it looks delicious, ooh, hungry eyes.

park THE HISTORICAL MINI-TOWN AND MADSBY LEGEPARK

Want to walk around the city but your legs are tired? We have a solution for you. Mini Fredericia - just near the train station. It just takes 15 minutes to walk around all of Fredericia. You can also meet more locals there than in the actual city. It cost 30 DKK but you get a real King Kong experience along with a glimpse of history. Only a couple of meters away you are teleported to the countryside and can take a walk with sheep and bunnies. Apparently there is a cityfarm in Madsby Legepark and you can play football next to goats. Madsby also has a lot of family activities like walking on the water, riding a boat, trampoline and lots more. Also check out the amazing Youth House, take a walk around the bastions, the town beyond the wall and be sure to read up on fire regulations.

anni, finland Hi! I just wanted to represent my country with this comfy sleeping gown with blue and white stripes. I am also wearing these super fashionable Fila flip flops with some white paint on them from last year´s Easa Lithuania (we were painting beautiful poles with my Others). And of course I have this Marimekko patterned toilet bag!

bollywood night To begin the series of theme parties it was up to our dear friends from NASA. At the info point there were brilliant artists putting in their best effort to give the curious Easians beautiful henna tattoos. In Bruunske Indian-Pop music videos were helping to get to the real Bollywood mood on a dance floor. Red dots in their forehead and pagris wrapped around their heads easians travelled deep into India as the train of dancers toured around Buunske´s dancefloor. Even though the Bollywood movie streaming was facing some technical problems the first theme night of EASA 2017 turned out to be a great success!

gossip girl Oh, it’s good to be back in EASA, feeling the love, seeing the love and hearing the love. I was happy to notice it didn’t take long for Finland and Belarus to rekindle an old EASA flame in the dance floor. Mothers lock down your daughters the Lithuanian guys are here. There was a lucky encounter of a desperate one and an easy one which led to a night of spontaneous love, with such passion that there was not even time to ask names. There were also numerous witnesses telling me that another half Lithuanian couple was enjoying the nightly activities of the intimate kind. On a less pleasant note; it seems that a concept of a toilet is surprisingly hard to grasp for some, as one young lady found it suitable to relieve her bladder in the privacy of the kitchen at the Bülows. There’s a toilet trailer, with perfectly comfortable toilet seats and running water, in the yard in case there is too long of a line for the indoors toilet. Gossip girl encourages people to take a good care of the places we’re staying at and not break the tv you found in that other room.

On the 26th the first EASA Talks event was held in Bülows. The first lecturer was Davide Zampini, the director of Research and Development in Cemex, a company that is sponsoring Current -workshop. The lecture was about floating concrete.

One would have expected last night (26th) to be the quiet one, everybody charging their batteries for the sangria night - but it turned out that easian way to do it is on the dance floor of Bruunske were DJs from Canada (RAMZi) and Denmark (AAYAA and MWNMWNMWN) were putting out some great tunes!

Looking forward what you little animals get up to at sangria night. I do need more spies, so email your gossip to umbrella.easa@gmail.com you know you love me
