EDITORIAL Hello again film lovers! The latest issue welcomes new readers and welcomes back our regular readers. This month’s cover feature review is the live action “Pinocchio”, a classic tale that merits retelling particularly when it is told with such emotion and gusto. It stars Roberto Benigni as Geppetto who creates a wooden puppet which comes to life. The film will appeal to young and old. Other reviews in this issue are “Eternal Beauty” and “Perfumes”. FilmFest Follower is back with a look at the screening schedule at the Toronto Film Festival and at San Sebastian. Finger-walk through the programmes and you will invariably find films that you will want to see which you will probably be able to watch virtually at the forthcoming London Film Festival in October. Marine Vach “Pinocchio, say something”. - Geppetto “Ba Bo”. - Pinocchio Live-action adaptation of the classic story of a wooden puppet named Pinocchio who comes to life. Geppetto, a woodcutter (Roberto Benigni) creates a puppet to replace the son he never had. Director Matteo Garrone brings genuine emotion to one to one of the most ambitious film adaptations to date of Carlo Collodi’s 1883 children’s classic. The film will attract children and adults as it proved when it opened in Italy. Garrone manages to wed a realistic social setting populated by the poor, hungry rural population of 19th century Italy with the dreamy fantasy of the book. Collodi’s is an eerie tale of metamorphosis, of animals playing the role of human beings and humans morphing into animals. The idea of a wooden puppet who longs to become a real human boy includes a mild frisson of horror, as well as the pathos that makes it an evergreen. The monstrous creatures who roam through the film under the amazing prosthetic makeup of Academy Award winner Mark Coulier makes us draw a smile, but they are monsters, nevertheless. Among them, of course, is Pinocchio himself. Behind the puppet’s rigid wood-grained face are the shining eyes and movable mouth of 8-year Ielepi’s, who is eerily believable in his intermediate state of half-human, half-inanimate being. But in a world full of grandmotherly snails (Maria Pia Timo), gorilla judges (Teco Celio) and talking crickets (Davide Marotta) and a talking wooden marionette…everything seems quite normal. The story begins when the lonely Geppeto decides to carve a lifelike puppet. He works on a trunk of wood that has already demonstrated strangely animate properties and soon takes the shape of a human boy. Begnini plays the threadbare craftman with unexpected emotional depth that recalls the paternal self-sacrifice he showed in his Oscar-winning role in “Life is Beautiful”. When his creation comes to life, he

joyfully proclaims Pinocchio to be his son, and he sells the clothes off his back to buy him a schoolbook so he can read and write. Cute as he looks in his little red hat and short pants, Pinocchio is mischievous and disobedient who will do anything to avoid going to school. When he runs away from home, Geppetto sets off to find him, promising to search the whole world, this sets the stage for the puppet’s adventures to unfold.
ROBERTO BENIGNI: His inventiveness and comic antics came to the fore in Jim Jarmusch’s “Down by Law”. Two innocent people are arrested and an interesting third person, Roberto (Beniigni)with broken English, joins them in their cell. On his idea, they decide to escape from prison. Their journey is the rest of the movie. In 1991, he starred in and directed the comedy “Johnny Stecchino” Playing the titular role as a kind-hearted but bumbling idiot who likes to steal bananas and is passed off for a snitch hiding from the Mob. Six years later, Benigni made his masterpiece: “Life is Beautiful”. When an open-minded Jewish librarian and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humour and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around the camp.

After, Jane (Sally Hawkins) falls into a state of despair over her schizophrenia, she encounters new sources of love and life with surprising results. There are really few stories more powerful and emotional than personalised projects and “Eternal Beauty” is a film that recasts a light on the weakness of mental health as a strength. The main character, Jane (Sally Hawkins), is inspired by a relative of Craig Roberts, the director of the film, that suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, but the director has said he believes she has a superpower. Roberts has produced not only one of the year’s most unique films, but also one of the best representations of mental illness ever committed to film. Jane navigates her way through her own troubles, a squabbling family, and lots and lots of medication.
Along the way she forms a romance with musician Mike, played by David Thewlis and attempts to understand what it means to be ‘in one’s oils. Striking visual effects coupled with close-quarters camera work make this a penetrating and sometimes uncomfortable viewing, though Craig Roberts injects the film with his own unique energy. Sally Hawkins cements her reputation as one of Britain’s greatest actors and it is hard to imagine anyone else pulling this role off so well. Comedy or tragedy sting with a raw feeling, making you utterly invested in every move she makes.

SALLY HAWKINS: Early breakthroughs in her career came by appearing in films directed by Mike Leigh and Woody Allen. “All or Nothing” for the former and “Cassandra’s Dream” for the latter. It was a starring role in 2008 in Mike Leigh’s “Happy-Go-Lucky” in which she played Poppy the ultimate optimist. It looked at a few chapters in the cheery, colourful North London schoolteacher’s reaction to life which sometimes exasperated those around her. But it was in 2017 that a starring role came along in a film directed by Guillermo del Toro that elevated her career beyond measure. It was publicised as a fairy tale for troubled times, which indeed it was. The film: “The Shape of Water” was set against the backdrop of cold war era America circa 1962. In the hidden, high security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and a co-worker played by Octavia Spencer, discover a secret classified experiment. “The Shape of Water” won the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture of the Year in 2018 and Sally Hawkins won Best Actress Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.
DAVID THEWLIS: Lancastrian, studied at Guildhall of Drama. He had a few minor roles in films and TV until he took the main role in “Naked” (1993). The film won him the New York Critics Award. Other notable films:”Dragonheart” “Restoration” ”Black Beauty” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”

PERFUMES Directed by Grégory Magne Starring: Emmannuelle Devas, Grégory Montel, Zelie Rixon Anne Walberg (Emmanuelle Devas) is a celebrity in the perfume world. She creates fragrances and sells her incredible talent to companies of all kinds. She lives as a diva, selfish, well-tempered. Guillaume Favre (Grégory Montel) is in the midst of a divorce from his wife. Their discussions for the moment revolve around the custody of their daughter Leah. Unfortunately for him, he lives in a 24 M2 studio, which does not make things easier. And to make things worse, he is about to lose his job as a chauffeur.
Anne, the social worker, becomes attached to Guillaume while the latter who needs money end up finding her more human than their first encounters suggested. Though the success of the film was undoubtedly due to the leading characters and director, Grégory Magne’s great tenderness towards them and punctuating his film on their verbal exchanges and the evolution of each of them. As for the subject of the storyline: perfumery. This is where the film focuses on Anne’s reliance on her sense of smell and the rare gift that she has in concocting perfumes from them. There is a major scene in a cave where she discovers numerous aromas that she knows will constitute a unique perfume. What one learns makes for a Documentary/drama. Added to this of course is the well-trodden plotline of opposites attract which is expertly handled, as at first Anne and Guillaume can barely tolerate each other’s company. “Perfumes” has its failings but manages to overcome them with an endearing and well-written subplot which is centred on Guillaume and his daughter Leah. These sequences provide necessary relief from the aromatic adventures of the film’s narrative. Guillaume and Leah express their love for each other and play together; a strong emotive bond between a father and daughter that you can immediately relate to and really believe so much that you do not want them to part and go their separate ways. In retrospect, I recalled in 1960 smelling a mystery film, “Scent of Mystery” which was the first film to use a system called Smell-O-Vision which released odours at certain points in the film’s plot. The film was released in Cinerama under the title “Holiday in Spain” without Smell-O-Vision. In 2015, a version complete with reconstructed scents was presented at screenings in Los Angeles, Denmark, and England. 12

Plot: a mystery novelist, played by Denholm Elliott, discovers a plan to murder an American heiress, played by Elizabeth Taylor in an uncredited role, while on vacation in Spain. He enlists the help of a taxi driver played by Peter Lorre. Some scenes were designed to highlight the Smell-O-Vision’s capabilities: wine casks fall off a wagon and roll down a hill, smashing against a wall, at which point a grape scent was released. Scents used in the film: Pipe tobacco – smoked by the villain Coffee Roses Wine Gunpowder Peppermint Shoe Polish Gasoline Flowers Brandy Perfume – the method to identify the girl whose life is in danger. Fresh sea air Peaches Bananas Wood Shavings Though it is unlikely that “Perfumes” will ever be remade using Smell-O-Vision. It would be interesting to smell the scents which Anne and Guillaume are sniffing. One thing that the film may do is get you to sniff out your favourite places. Why not try with your favourite cinema?
GRÉGORY MAGNE: His second feature film was the acclaimed “L’Air de Rien” in 2012. An officer of the court meets his idol, a singer that stopped performing years ago, while seizing his assets and takes upon his self to help him with his creditors. Grégory Montel appeared in the role of Sam. EMMANUELLE DEVAS: Well established actress with over 59 feature films to her credit: Among the highlights have been” The Beat My Heart Skipped”,in which she played Chris. It tells the story of Will Thomas who still leads a life of crime and cruelty, just like his thuggish father, or will he pursue his dream of becoming a pianist? Other standout films in Emmanuelle’ filmography which are worth repeated viewings are “Coco Before Chanel”, “In the Beginning”, “Violette”, and “Moka”. GRÉGORY MONTEL: A breakthrough came for Grégory when he got a challenging role in “Maestro”. The storyline: Henry, a young actor who finds himself involved in a film by a cinema superstar, Cedric Rovere. Charmed by his benevolence, feelings hitherto unknown, while Rovere, intrigued at Henry’s dreams, lives the shoot as an unexpected dream. The film also featured Pio Marmai, Michael Lonsdale and Deborah Francois.

PLEASE RELEASE ME GIUSEPPE TORNATORE: EVERY FILM MY FIRST FILM This documentary on the filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore has only been screened theatrically in Italy and that was at the Rome Film Festival on the 17th November 2012 and generally released across Italy on the 18th March 2013. The documentary, directed by Luciano Barcaroli & Gerardo Panichi features a cast of revered names: Monica Bellucci, Sergio Casteellito, *Ben Gazzara, Ennio Morricone, Tim Roth, Geoffrey Rush, Sergio Rubini and many more.
In 1988, Tornatore made one of the greatest films of alltime: ”Cinema Paradiso” It tells the story of Salvatore (nicknamed Toto), a young boy who grew up fatherless in a small Sicilian village in the forties and fifties. Now a successful film director, he returns home for the funeral of Alfredo, his old friend who was projectionist at the local cinema throughout Salvatore’s childhood. Tornatore loves the movies. What better way of celebrating that love than by watching one of the great films about film, a movie that doesn’t just tell us why movies are so important but one that shows us in a way that taps into the real emotion of cinema. Now that’s why movies are important. In the years before his death, composer Ennio Morricone stated on several occasions that the only director he would consider coming out of retirement for would be Tornatore. *MbM’s first issue featured Please Release which highlighted the documentary “Gazzara” on the actor Ben Gazzara a film which had not received a theatrical screening and still has not had a screening and is not even available on DVD.

CINEMA PARADISO Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore Starring: Philippe Noiret, Salvatore Cascio, Jacques Perrin, Agnese Nano, Antonella Attili, Marco Leonardi, Brigitte Fossey Released early in Italy in 1988 and was not considered to be great by those who saw it. Following on from this original reaction, the producer Franco Cristaldi demanded cuts be made, Tornatore, like all directors was not pleased by this, but he owed Cristaldi a favour – after all it was he who backed him after only one other movie and some local TV to his credit. Tornatore and his team regrouped and reworked the film into a two hour edited version, which was then unleashed on the world at the following year’s Cannes Film Festival where it ironically won the jury prize and later the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Miramax acquired it for the US, and it became a hit across the globe for other distributors both theatrically and on video. The key to the film’s success is the involvement of the music genius of Ennio Morricone who had worked with Tornatore on most of his movies. In a switch from the usual method, and further reinforcing the power and importance of Morricone’s involvement, Tornatore ensured that the music was written before the film was shot, so that the cast and crew can absorb and respond to it in advance. Tornatore recalls dropping off the script for ‘Paradiso’at Morricone’s studio late one afternoon, and two days later there was terrific, emotional music to hear. Some of the themes that are in the film were composed in front of Tornatore during those first days. His music was an inspiration to everyone. Morricone stated that “The music was born of my collaboration with Giuseppe. It reflects how I was inspired by the story of the small boy. And Tornatore stated. “With “Cinema Paradiso” I wanted to make a fantasy about the times when movie-making was an excitement. I had to create everything as a period film. I didn’t want to be realistic”. “Cinema Paradiso” will celebrate its anniversary on its rerelease on October 21st. See one of the greatest films ever made.

EXTRAS DVDS OF THE MONTH RICORDI? (Remember?) Directed By Valerio Mieli A love story seen through the memories of one young couple: recollections altered by moods, different perspectives, and time itself. A journey through the years of two individuals, united, divided, happy, unhappy, deeply in love or in love with others, told in a single stream of emotions and shades of feeling. Over the course of the film, he (Luca Marinelli) learns that love can last, while she (Linda Caridi) learns to live with nostalgia. Their memories change over time: fading or bursting in happiness, in a present that fast slips away. Just to see that this excellent film had been released on DVD was a pleasant surprise and brought back fond memories on seeing the film at the Cine Lumiere in their short season of “Cinema Made in Italy” and my interview with the film’s director, Valerio Mieli. She is an apprentice for a dance company, but she’s not really a dancer. She has a best friend named Sophie, but they aren’t really speaking anymore. Greta Gerwig shines in Noah Baumbach’s “Frances Ha”, a modern comedy about a charming 27-year-old who wants so much more than she has but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness.
2014. Nominated for Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical – Greta Gerwig. The film was shot in black & white. There are strong influences of Francois Truffaut on Noah Baumbach, in the liveliness of the storyline and the way it was shot. The instrumental piece used in the film is called “Modern Love”, which was a remake of a sequence from Leos Carax’s “Mauvais Sang”, where Denis Lavant runs through the streets. Another influence was Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” and “Broadway Danny Rose”, creating the ambiance of New York.

EXTRAS DVDS OF THE MONTH A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK Written and Directed By Woody Allen A rainy day in new york tells the story of college sweethearts, Gatsby (Timothee Thalamet) and Ashleigh (Elle Fanning), whose plans for a romantic weekend together in New York City are dashed as quickly as the sunlight turns into showers. The two are soon parted, and through a series of meetings and comical adventures they will discover that, while you only live once, once is enough if you find the right person. Woody returns to the romantic fields of previous hits: “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Midnight in Paris”. He has assembled an all-star cast: Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Live Schreiber, for a charming, sizzling and comedic tale set amidst the fast-paced dizzying streets of The Big Apple. “A Rainy Day In New York” is another excellent DVD to add to the collection of DVDs for Woody’s loyal devotees whose library will invariably consist of “Annie Hall”, “Broadway Danny Rose”, “Bullets Over Broadway”, “Crimes And Misdemeanors”, “Everyone Says I Love You”, “Love and Death”, “Match Point”, “Manhattan Murder Mystery”, “Melinda and Melinda”, “Midnight in Paris”, “Play It Again, Sam”, “The Purple Rose of Cairo”, “Radio Days”, “Shadows And Fog”, “Sleeper”, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, “Woody Allen a Documentary” and “Zelig”.
