OUR FRIEND Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite Starring: Jason Segal, Isabella Kai,Violent McGraw, Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson I want to make sure that Matt gets back on his feet. - Dane After receiving life-altering news, a couple finds unexpected support from their best friend, who puts his own life on hold and moves into their family home, bringing an impact much greater and more profound than anyone could have imagined. “OUR FRIEND” opened the Toronto Film Festival in 2019. At first it seems a downer with the storyline of Nicole (Dakota Johnson) who has terminal cancer, and her husband Matt (Casey Affleck) struggling to endeavor to cope under continual stress of shock and sadness. But when their best friend Dane (Jason Segal) calls to help them in their time of need, they are emotionally appreciative. The story is based on an Esquire article written by journalist Matt. Dane moves into Matt and Nicole’s house, which also has their two young daughters living with them. One of the many heart-wrenching moments is when Matt sits outside on the porch keeping their daughters entertained and happy while inside a somber discussion is taking place. Then comes the time when Nicole and Matt must tell the girls that she is dying. The bounds of friendship are examined in numerous ways. Earlier years Matt worked as a journalist on a local newspaper, while Nicole was a theatre actress. Dane was seemingly in the friend zone. When he first met Matt, they soon became friends, particularly as Matt was habitually having fainting spells and Dane was there for him. He loved Matt and Nicole. Regarding Matt, he was inclined to be selfish, like when he decided to take the job of a war correspondent in Libya without telling Nicole. She took an interest in another man due to the fact her husband was rarely home. The selfless act Of Dane does not come without sacrifice including relationships with women that could lead to something. It is Jason Seagal who is the major influence in the movie that will bring tears with sadness and joy. In these pandemic times, it is fortunate to see a film that offers a message for us all: ‘Being There For Each Other’ 4

PREPARATIONS TO BE TO GETHER FOR AN UNKNOWN PERIOD OF TIME Directed by Lili Horvat Starring: Natassa Stark, Viktor Bodo, Benett Vilmanyio Official submission of Hungary for the Best International Feature Film category of the 93rd Academy Awards from Hungary for 2021. Marta, a forty-year-old neurosurgeon falls in love. She leaves her shining American career behind and returns to Budapest to start a new with the man. But the love of her life claims they have never met before. Both are neurosurgeons and are attending a conference. Before they leave, they make a promise to meet again two months later in Budapest. Marta is really convinced that Janus is the man for her – the man of her dreams. Their meeting place is earmarked to be at Liberty Bridge, one of her favorite city landmarks. But Janus does not show up. And as they never exchanged numbers, Marta tracks him down at the hospital where he works, and he unexpectedly ends up in her operating room. The film tends to be more concerned with stirring emotions than moving the storyline along and does slow the narrative along a bit, but outside of that director Lili Horvat knows that she has a story worth telling and the ambiance of a hospital to tell it that is so strong that often or not you feel you are one of the medical team, particularly in the operating theatre and close imagery of the surgical procedures. Furthermore, if you do see this film in a cinema during the current COVID 19, and patrons would need to be distanced from each other and to be wearing a face covering…then its happening…it won’t be CGI. You may think that the film sounds too morbid to be entertaining, but there are moments of lightheartedness. A sequence when Marta follows Janus into a taxi cab to watch each other. When they get out, they play a kind of mimetic, where they imitate each other’s walking on opposite sides of the sidewalk until Janus suddenly disappears into the ether. Another sequence, Marta attends Janus’s Book Launch, just to hear him speak. The scene brilliantly captures the ethos of Lili Horvat’s film. Janus tells his audience that his book on neuroscience will inhabit literature shelves in America before Janus goes on to describe 8

something is rooted in tangible objects and visible actions as brain surgery in the most poetic ways. During the Q & A session, he even uses metaphor to explain to the audience the hard decisions involved during brain surgery. An artery might need to sacrificed so that the frontal lobe can be saved. “The brain is like a city, with various neighborhoods,” Janus says, “By blowing up an ugly hotel,” Janus says, “I save a castle.” He then looks down at Marta and it is though he is confessing something.

Lili Horvat: Director: Prior to ‘Preparations’ Lili Horvat was known for “Wednesday’s Child”, which she wrote and directed and won Karlovy Vary’s East of West Prize. It was a coming of-age story. How can someone who grew up without a mother become one herself?

Natassa Stark: Leading actress in ‘Preparations’ as Marta. Natassa is currently filming a romantic, comedy, drama, “Vaszelytes Lehet a Tagyi

Vikto Bodo: The most successful of the cast of ‘Preparations’ outside of this movie has been Vikto Bodo as we will see if we examine one of his movies, “Overnight”. Twenty four hours from the life of a Hungarian stockbroker. Bono played Peter, a successful stockbroker in Budapest. One day, two events turned the world upside down and confront Peter with the shattered of his life, his way of living and Peter starts to question everything. It is a time for a change.

NB: Due to the current COVID 19 situation, the Berlin International Film Festival has developed a new festival format for 2021. The 71st Berlinale will kick off with the INDUSTRY EVENT on March 1-5 2021 with the film industry platform European Film Market, Berlinale Co-Production Market, Berlinale Talents and the World Cinema Fund in online form with both opening their digital platforms to the general public as well as industry guests. From June 9 – 20, 2021 the Berlinale will invite the audience to the SUMMER SPECIAL with numerous film presentations in Berlin at both indoor and outdoor cinemas. Germany has produced some great filmmakers but none greater than Wim Wenders who came to prominence in 1974 with “Alice In The Cities”. It was one of the major films of the New German Cinema. The film was partly shot in in the United States. It’s storyline concerned a journalist with writer’s block who becomes a guardian of eight-year-old Alice (Yella Rottlander) when her mother leaves the girl with him briefly at an American airport, only never to return. Back in Germany, an unlikely friendship develops between the two as they embark on a journey to find Alice’s grandmother. Through Rudger Vogler’s portrayal of the embittered writer, Wenders presents a stark but witty account of the changing face of Europe, the onset of global consumerism and the influences of American pop culture. A decade later, Wim impressed film critics and cinema audiences with a must-see masterpiece “Paris, Texas”, a haunting tale of loss, redemption and the lies that bind families together. Travis Henderson (Harry Dean Stanton)walks out of the desert after four years to the amazement of his brother Walt (Dean Stockwell)and reunited with Hunter, his seven-year-old son. 26

Travis decides that they should search for his ex-wife, played by Nastassia Kinski, so that they can be a family once again. “Paris, Texas” won the Palme d’Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and the Best Director prize at BAFTA in 1985. The film is rightfully regarded as one of the artistic triumphs of contemporary world cinema. And what of Wim Wenders feeling about Berlin. “I lived in America for four years and I came back to rediscover this country of mine through the city of Berlin which was my favourite place in Germany and started to have that desire to make a film about the city to show itself and all its facets that was years before the Wall fell. None at that time thought we’d see that Wall come down. It was still a very peculiar island of the city. There is nothing like it, at the same time I thought; make a film about the Germany in my heart. Whatever connected to the language, to the history. So, when I looked to America and then to poets and reading at least a poem a day and these poems were populated, so to speak, by angels, and they reverberated in the city in a strange way and saw these figures, not just in cemeteries, but all over the place and I was around the city and trying to find a story to express how I felt about this city. And I was looking for characters. I thought of mailmen, firemen, people who get around, so we could see many facets of the city. I made lots of notes and I wrote ‘guardian angels, question mark’ as a vague possibility. I don’t even know where it came from. And those were the characters I’d been looking for and then an idea popped up that they might even be able to listen to our thoughts, which would allow me to use interior voices and stuff and talk about things that normally people would not talk about, that they would only think about. Angels could be everywhere. They could cross through walls. They could of course cross through the wall. They could be omnipresent and could have this complete overview of the city and I start to think, how can you make a movie with angels as your heroes. They should be invisible, which was a great tool, cinematically”. The final result was of course Wim Wender’s masterpiece –

CHINESE CINEMA SEASON 12th Feb — 12th May 2021

An online Film Festival It will be the biggest online screening event that specialises in Chinese language films in the UK and Europe. The season will showcase Chinese language films, never seen before in the UK and highlight overlooked gems to cinema lovers in the UK AND Ireland. Over 50 films will be on offer over the course of the season, giving the opportunity for audiences to access the best of Chinese cinema, and enriching the diversity of films available on VOD. The season will be divided into themed sections and mini retrospectives, with the aims of recontextualising titles, enriching UK lockdown life, and presenting Chinses culture in a fresh way with new perspectives. Ultimately, the season is a love letter to Chinese Cinema.

SHANGHAI ANIMATION STUDIO RETRO will showcase 10 Chinese animation classics dated from 1950s to the present. All films have recently been remastered to the highest quality and will appear in the UK for the very first time. SAPS is the oldest and the most respected animation studio in China. While animation fans in the West are more familiar with Japan’s Studio Glibli, it in fact owes its inspiration to Chinese animation tradition. The master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki visited the Shanghai studio in 1984, before he set up his own a year later. Throughout the years, many in China have invited the master to deliver classes, but he always refused, saying “I don’t have anything to teach you, you have the best studio in Shanghai. It is I that have to learn from this Shanghai studio.” FISHING CHILD (1959, 30mins) UK Premiere WHERE IS MAMA? DISCUSSION PANELS International Reception of Chinese Language Films by Post-Millenials British East/Southeast Asian Women in Film and TV

Tradition and Innovation in Chinese Animation The Colour of the Sky After Rain: An Evening with Lady Tessa Keswick – A rare appearance to China and its culture. There will be five further discussion panels in the latter half of the season: “Film data and Policy Between the UK & China” (5th March). NB: People can sign up for access at www.chinesefilm.uk. More films will be added every week, but they have not been announced yet. One director who is expected to have a film added is Chloe Zhao who directed one of the hottest favourites to win awards and that is of course NOMADLAND. Chloe’s first feature was in 2015, “Songs My Brother’s Taught Me”. Storyline: With an older brother in jail and living with their single mother on Pine Ridge Reservation, Johnny and his sister Jachuan’s lives develop new challenges when their absentee father suddenly dies. The lost prompts Johnny to strike out for Los Angeles, but it would mean leaving behind his beloved sister. 2017 was the year of Chloe’s second feature: “The Rider”. After suffering a near fatal head injury, Brady Blackburn undertakes a search for new identity and what? Three years later Chloe made “Nomadland” and that film has taken her to now be recognized as a major film director on the international scene. The biggest scoop that the Chinese Cinema Season could spring is to add to its programme is to screen Chloe Zhao’s latest film “The Eternals”, which though is in post-production, but it could be ready. The story is about the saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations. The film stars Salma Hayek and Angina Jolie. Now, that would really be the ultimate scoop.
