Cumbrian right of way repaired by volunteers from Green Lane Association

A TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS from the Green Lane Association and Trail Riders Fellowship recently spent a day working on repairs to Stile End, a classic right of way between Kentmere and Sadgill in Cumbria. Enjoying a combination of glorious sunshine and gnawingly cold temperatures, the team focused on clearing culverts and the associated main drains in bid to prevent water runoff from causing further damage to the lane surface. ‘We managed to clear out around fourteen existing culverts and drain outlets as well as create a few new cuts to take water off the lane,’ comment the GLASS reps. ‘We also started to clear the stone channel above the steep zig-zag section to

allow water back into the beck rather than down the pitched section, where it had already become a contributing factor to the damage. ‘Steve and Richard from the TRF also installed some large stones near the top of the descent, where users have been cutting corners. Great work, but still more to be done.’

As usual when work is ongoing, especially in an area like Cumbria, the team encountered many other rights of way users. Less usually, perhaps, especially when there’s a set of 4x4s in sight, it was all very positive. ‘Loads of smiley walkers, runners and mountain bikers plus one Jimny,’ says GLASS. ‘And not a miserable face in sight!’

The second round of the 2022 Bowler Defender Challenge saw three-time British Rally champion Mark Higgins take the wheel of a 90 liveried in homage to the 60th anniversary of the James Bond movie franchise. The event in Dolgellau, North Wales saw Higgins, who has worked as a stunt driver in the last four Bond films, win by a minute and 41 seconds alongside co-driver Claire Williams

What does a Defender say about you?

SUPERIOR ROOF TENT he other day, I bumped into a chap I hadn’t seen for a few years. Our kids used to go to the same nursery and many’s a time we’d stand outside chatting about cars for about an hour after dropping them off. He had a Discovery 4 at the time and, encouraged by what I do for a living, would often talk about maybe buying a classic old leafer to go with it. Well, nursery came and went, as it does, and we drifted off to start doing our different school runs instead. But now, as it turns out, our kids have just started going to Cubs at the same place. And guess what? The talk of cars restarted like it had never stopped. Has he bought himself an old leafer in the intervening years? Yes he certainly has, but it’s a Willys Jeep. Oops. Still, he’s thinking about changing the Disco 4 and he’s intending to stick with Land Rover. But here’s where he said something really, really telling. ‘I’ve been looking at the Defender,’ he told me. ‘They’ve got everything, haven’t they? But I’m not sure… do you think maybe they make you look like a bit of a knob?’ Interesting. I mean, I love the new Defender. But when you see one, how do you perceive the person driving it? The same way you perceive someone in an old 90 or 110, I wonder, or the same way as you perceive someone in a Disco 5 or Range Rover Sport? Or is it even worse than that? Could it be that because the Defender is trying so hard to be catch the vibe of the old one, it makes you look like you’re pretending to be someone you’re not? There’s nothing more tragic than an old guy in a nightclub, after all… but a rich bloke acting like a lad in a Td5 gets close. It’s like the whole ‘built not bought’ thing in reverse, only multiplied by however much that shiny new Defender is worth. So I suggested that for the same money, he could get two or three nice Td5s, use one and lay the others down as an investment. He’ll never be as comfortable, or as warm, or a million other things that may or may not matter. Range Rover specialist using cryo treatment for kinder chassis and body cleaning

hether you’re restoring a classic Series I, modifying an early Discovery into an off-road warhorse or turning a Defender into the ultimate street machine, there’s one obstacle that’s very likely to make the job less fun than you had hoped. Rust is the bane of all our lives. Chassis parts, suspension parts, body panels, doors, you name it… if it’s made of steel, it’s going to suffer. So most projects, if they’re being done properly, will start with a strip-down followed by a very comprehensive assault on all areas tainted by the tin worm. There are various ways of doing this, some of them quite frighteningly brutal. Whether you’re media-basting it, chemically stripping it or going hammer and tongs with a grinder, you need to be very careful not to do more harm than good. But Oxfordshire-based Kingsley Re-Engineered, which specialises in remanufacturing old Range Rovers to a far higher standard than original, has just started employing a subtler technique for stripping metal. Cryo creaning, which uses dry ice granules as a spray agent, is less abrasive than traditional methods – to the extent that it can result in as many as 70% more panels being saved. And you don’t need to be in the market for one of Kingsley’s remade Range Rovers to get the benefit of its new investment in cryo cleaning. The company is offering its facilities to other specialists, and private individuals, with various options available for both body and underbody treatments.

W

Kingsley says the process of stripping a Range Rover’s chassis and shell prior to starting work on a rebuild takes around 100 hours. That’s for the sort of gold-standard level the company works to, of course, and for a cheap-andcheerful resto you might cut corners – but there’s a reason why they’ve restored more than 400 of these vehicles – and whatever kind of rebuild you’ve got in mind, the hard yards you put in at the outset will only ever pay dividends in the future. The problem is that those hard yards have traditionally tended to involve processes using chemicals or abrasives – making them either harmful to the environment or harsh on the metal. In some cases, removing the rust has done so much damage that the panel itself has been destroyed in the process. Dry-ice blasting is different because the frozen CO2 granulate it uses as a spray agent purifies immediately to

CO2 gas when it touches the surface. This makes it much gentler on the good metal than blasting media like shot and sand which remain in their solid state throughout, while no spray agent residues are left behind. In addition to removing rust, the process works on other contaminents like old undercoat and flaking paint – while remaining harmless to painted surfaces. It can also be used to clean typically oily areas like engine bays – and even items like carburettors and instrument clusters. Kingsley Re-Engineered started using cryo cleaning on all its Range Rover projects from 4 April – as well as offering outside clients the chance to take up the excess capacity in its onsite blasting facility. ‘I’m a big believer in working with other specialists but also opening the doors of Kingsley Re-Engineered to others,’ said Kingsley founder Damon Oorloff. ‘That’s why we’re not just offering this service for our customers and Range Rovers in particular, but any other specialists are welcome to see the process and request a quote from us to assist with their projects. ‘Whether it be a restoration done by a single person in a garage or other restorers, we’d love to share what this amazing technology can do for others.’ Interested? If you’ve got a crusty Land Rover niggling away at your conscience, you should be. Kingsley has set up a dedicated website for its cryo cleaning service – it’s at www. iceblasting.co.uk.

Obituary: Tony Gilroy

The man who saved Land Rover

ony Gilroy, the man who saved Land Rover in the 1980s and turned the company into the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the UK’s manufacturing sector by the early 1990s, has died peacefully at his Worcestershire home. He was 85. A native of Cork, Tony kept a twinkle in his eye but had a reputation for toughness. In the boardroom, he demonstrated a detailed knowledge of every aspect of the business, forensically identifying key issues and actions to resolve them. Outside the boardroom, he never sought the limelight. He also shunned perks, such as a personal chauffeur, believing it was an unnecessary company cost. He was never as widely known as his contemporaries, Michael Edwardes, Harold Musgrove, Graham Day and George Simpson. But many who worked with him at a senior level, or for him on the shop floor, saw him as an unsung hero of the British motor industry. His career started at Ford before taking on one of the toughest jobs in car industry – manufacturing director of the Longbridge factory. He managed to convince the workforce to accept the British Leyland rationalisation plan and was instrumental in the dismissal of the Longbridge trade union convener Derek ‘Red Robbo’ Robinson, who opposed it. Robinson was reported to have led 523 walk-outs in the 30 months before he was sacked in 1979. Tony played a key part in the introduction of the Mini Metro in 1980 and was then promoted to managing director of Freight Rover, the van manufacturer. Given six months to turn the company around – or close it – Gilroy saved the business. In 1983, he was appointed to the top job at Land Rover and within months had identified its deficiencies and developed a plan to make it successful. At the time, 75% of the company’s business was from sales of Land Rovers in Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. But the collapse of the African economies, and the decline in oil revenues, meant that these markets could no longer afford to buy Land Rovers. Tony recognised that Land Rover had to be more successful in mainland Europe and Australia. More importantly, Land Rover would have to sell vehicles in the world’s two largest car markets,

T

North America and Japan, where Land Rovers were not available at the time. To succeed in North America, the Range Rover had to become a more premium vehicle with featuures such as bigger engines, luxury leather interiors and a host of other refinements. Looking to the future, Tony identified changes in the world’s four-wheel-drive markets. New vehicles being developed by Japanese manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi were in a growing new segment between the agricultural Land Rover and luxurious Range Rover. So Tony set up a special team that developed the Land Rover Discovery in a time of 36 months – when most new vehicles took five years to plan and bring to market. Tony cleverly divided the development programme into elements that fell within his financial sign-off authority to avoid interference from British Leyland headquarters. By using the existing Range Rover suspension and chassis – as well as raiding the parts bin from Austin Rover vehicles – Tony was able to develop the Discovery at a fraction of the cost that other manufacturers were incurring for their brand new cars. The investment in improved Range Rovers, and the Discovery, was made possible by Gilroy’s plans to significantly reduce the company’s manufacturing cost base. He saved millions of pounds by closing more than a dozen satellite component-making plants and moving some 3500 people and their 22,000 manufacturing operations on to the main Solihull factory. With Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s government anxious to sell off British Leyland, Land Rover was offered to General Motors – who offered Tony a free hand with the company. But he had other plans, rejected the offer and supported a successful ‘Keep Land Rover British’ campaign. What Tony wanted was to acquire the company through a management buy-out. He very nearly succeeded, however Thatcher stepped in personally to prevent the Rover Group being sold off piecemeal. The management changes brought in by Graham Day (merging the Austin

Rover Group board and the Land Rover Group board into one Rover Group board) left Tony in an impossible position. He left the company at the end of 1988, ironically before the public launch of his creation, the Discovery, in the autumn of 1989. Tony later headed Perkins Engines, part of the North American-based Varity Group. When the company was merged to become LucasVarity, he rose to chief operating officer worldwide, working both in the US and Europe. When he retired, he was able to spend his leisure time playing golf (he had been a member of Redditch Golf Club since 1974) and also took up shooting. Tony leaves a widow, Sandra, son Declan, daughters Claire and Fiona and seven grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by son Aidan. His legacy was that he had saved Land Rover, developed one of the most commercially successful vehicles in British motoring history and laid the solid platform from which Land Rover became a successful worldwide brand. As a former Land Rover employee commented: ‘If you had done your homework, you were okay. If not, you were dead.’ It was true that Tony didn’t suffer fools gladly, but he enjoyed enormous respect from the people who worked for him. Many will remember Tony as a man who had a fierce exterior – but behind it there was a heart of Irish gold. With thanks to Colin Walkey and Mike Gould. Picture courtesy of the British Motor Museum

Super-sized workshops from Clarke – big enough for all your Land Rovers!

T-600 www.THUNDERPOLE.co.uk

Workshop

MA HINE MART HAS INTRODU ED two new units into its Clarke range of Garage/Workshops. And if size matters to you, which it should if you drive a big old Land Rover, these are the ones you’ll want. That’s because the new CIG1432 -Large Garage measures 32 feet long, 14 feet wide and 12 feet high. Big, then. Big enough to store four Defender 110s. To want more would just be greedy. But greedy we are. So yes, dammit, we do want more. Happily, then, more is what the Clarke CIG1 40 -Large Garage give you. This bad boy weighs in at 40 feet long, 1 feet wide and 14.5 feet high. Clarke says these garages are designed for storing big stuff like boats, coaches and motorhomes. But if you’ve got the space, either of them would make a brilliant workshop for your Land Rover collection – at a fraction of the price of putting up a barn. Both garages are based on frames made from heavy-duty, powder-coated steel tubing. This is 1.5” in

diameter on the case of the 32-footer and 2 3 8 on the 40 unit. The extra diameter is necessary to support the weight of the bigger structure, which also has an apex roof as opposed to the smaller garage’s arched design. The covering is triple-layered, 305gsm waterproof, woven polyethylene fabric which is fully UV-treated for long-term protection against sun and rain. Cover tensioning and cross rails are ratcheted, allowing optimal

tightening and ensuring a neat, tidy look with no loose material. You don’t need to expect either of these monsters to be a five-minute job. But to help make it as painless as possible, they’re built using simple push-fit connections. So at least you won’t have to stop halfway through to recharge your driver. Prices for the garages begin at 1390.80 for the -Large CIG1432 and climb to 3900 for the -Large CIG1 40. Sounds like quite a big jump, you might reasonably say, but that’s 40 square feet at the top end and we’ve just found someone selling a flat that size in a trendily grubby part of London for £850,000. Both these garages are mobile, they cost a lot less than building even a tiny garage and best of all, they don’t mean you have to live in London. Whether you see it as a garage or a workshop, either of these units promises to take the crummy bit of ground next to your house and transform it into your happy place. Pay a visit to www.machinemart.co.uk and let the joy begin.

‘This is not one for the purist,’ says Matt Moore, owner of Historic Motoring Solutions. ‘It’s more for a discerning motoring enthusiast who wants something useful and unique.’ He’s talking about a Series I 107 Station Wagon which he’s just finished rebuilding. Dating from 1957, it started life by being exported to Australia and was among a batch brought back to the

Anyway, that’s a debate for another day the point is that with this going on, independent specialists like Matt needed to chase another kind of buyer – the kind to whom buying a classic Land Rover is something you do with your heart and soul, not your financial advisor and investment portfolio manager. Heart and soul… and head, too? Yes, for sure. As Matt says, this is a vehicle for someone who wants a Series I they can use, and he restored it with just that purpose in mind. The seats have been retrimmed in Tenghi upholstery from Exmoor Trim, with the same material also covering the door panels. The bulkhead, meanwhile, is lined in Dynamat, which comes over as quite a heroic thing to do. Up top, the roof lining has a patina all of its own; ’ S ’ ’ any spiders living in it… Australia tend not to be rusted to death, but Matt started with a new galvanised chassis from Richards anyway, adding a fully rebuilt bulkhead to put himself in a rock-solid base camp. To turn the chassis into the rolling variety, he added a set of Stage 1 axles – fully restored themselves, of course, complete with rebuilt swivels and brakes. These are shod with 2 5 75R1 BFGoodrich Mud-Terrains on deep-dish steel rims and hold the vehicle up using a set of parabolic springs paired with new shocks. If you’re the aforementioned purist, by now you’ve either stopped reading or passed out at the sheer horror of it all. Which is just as well, because next came a 200Tdi engine. Taken from a Discovery, this was fitted minus its intercooler on the basis that there wasn’t room for it. The donor vehicle’s power steering wasn’t used, either, which sounds like a recipe for forearms like Popeye – though as we found when we had a spin in the vehicle, it’s actually surprisingly light to manoeuvre even at low speeds. Behind the engine is a Series IIA gearbox. This gives you syncromesh in every ratio, though first you have to find one – which with the absolutely gigantic throw on the stick is definitely an acquired skill. One that’s well worth the time to acquire, though, because for all the effort you have to put into it the sheer pleasure of bonding with an old stager like this is simply incomparable. We’d love it even more if its bodywork still had the patina of 5 years in the Outback, but this one has been painted – albeit not to the sort of over-prepped level that neutralises a vehicle’s character. The body cappings haven’t been re-galvanised, either, which helps connect it to the life it’s lived to date. Inside, the seats and doors have been re-trimmed in Tenghi upholstery from Exmoor and there’s a liberal amount of Dynamat in the footwells. Whether this actually makes a difference is hard to quantify, though to us it’s quite hard to believe that it could be any louder in the cabin when

you press the button and the Tdi lump clatters into life. It’s noisy, it vibrates like mad and we like it just the way it is. We also like, make that love, the daylight that’s visible through the floor at either end of the bulkhead behind the front seats. It would be unthinkable in a Defender, but in a 107 it’s simply correct. As Matt puts it, ‘the rest of the inside is original and patinated.’ This includes the head lining, which to be fair is very patinated indeed. So much so that having spent 5 years in Australia, we’d be taking precautions in case there were dodgy spiders living in it. What it does have, though, is access holes to vents from the Safari roof – always a lovely period item on a Land Rover from this era. Would it be better if all these items were back to the way they were when they left the factory? In some people’s eyes, maybe, yes it would. And some of those same people might tolerate all the non-standard parts on the vehicle,

too. Perhaps it would be worth more with its original engine, box, axles and so on, especially if you were to do a just-so resto on it and take it back to the way it was on day one. But as we always say, it’s the history that makes a classic, and history is a living thing. And this is still very much a living Land Rover. Matt didn’t rebuild it this way just so it could sit in a museum. ‘It’s an absolute head turner,’ he says. ‘It would be a great tow truck for a period racing car and he’s got plenty of knowledge of that scene), ‘or just for fun days out.’ And how right he is. It might not be one for the purist, but this is a Series I with a whole lifetime still to be lived. And for whoever takes it on, it’s going to be a lifetime of smiles aplenty. And I knew then that I would one day have my own! ‘After having it only about a month, I had it up to Parkwood 4x4 to see what it could do. And even in standard form with tyres that had done 43,000 miles, it was unbelievable.’ That was when one of Jordan’s friends recommended Adventure 4x4, which was conveniently located near him in Leeds. Soon he had less money but more stuff on his Landy, and he obviously liked it that way because he kept going back. Just as obviously, the guys from Adventure 4x4 were equally happy with the way this was going. But this wasn’t just your everyday customer relations job – Jordan was up there so often that

everyone started becoming mates. So rather than just milking him for every penny they could get, the company suggested that they could get his Landy stickered up and become a kind of sponsor for him. His response? Two of them, actually: ‘Yes’ and ‘what do I get out of it?’ Admit it, you’d think exactly the same things, if not necessarily in the same order. ‘You’ll be looked after’ was the answer. Jordan was obviously confident that this wasn’t going to be in the Goodfellas sense of the word, so he booked the 90 back in and this time he got the works. bolted to it. This replaced Jordan’s first winch, a Superwinch Talon, which he drowned shortly after fitting it. It might be a clean and tidy looker, but he’s not scared to give it the treatment in search of his next off-road challenge. The word ‘challenge’ needn’t be taken to mean something here. This is Jordan’s everyday car, as well as being a top toy and, let’s face it, a superior pose-truck, so however hard he pushes his luck off-road he’s not into wrecking it in search of glory. Besides, quite apart from all the hardcore off-road gear it’s got another secret, too. Adventure 4x4 also specialises in performance tuning, you see. And not just el cheapo plug-in power boosts, either. The Defender’s TD5 engine has been treated to a full flash remap, downloading a 100% new performance programme to its ECU, and this is backed up by list of other mods to help unlock its potential.

LAND ROVER T H E G R E AT B R I T I S H C L A S S I C

These include the usual EGR removal as well as a Green cotton air filter, AlliSport boost module, Serck Motorsport intercooler and straightthrough exhaust. All good, worthwhile stuff, especially when you put your truck on the rollers and find that it’s pushing out almost 200bhp at full chat. However impressive all this might sound, that’s how it looks too when you see the 90 in action. It covers the ground with power and articulation to spare – we went looking for somewhere to get one of its wheels off the ground for photos and, short of attacking the sort of stuff that’s just going to roll you, it simply wasn’t happening. Not at all bad for a mere toy, you might say. But then, the kid who dreamed of owning a 4x4 after seeing them on telly is a big boy now. And the truck he bought for carrying his mountain bike around, that’s grown up too. Into a proper big boy’s toy.

PLUS What to pay for every classic Land Rover

Look after a Land Rover, and it will last forever. This longevity, which is almost unique in the car industry, means a vast number of classic Land Rovers are still on the road today – and not just as classics, but as historical vehicles still working for their living to this day. Land Rover: The Great British Classic celebrates this magnificent heritage by focusing on the best of Land Rover from its early days. A high-quality publication from the makers of 4x4 magazine and The Landy newspaper, it covers a broad spectrum of historical vehicles: not just Series I, II and III Land Rovers from the postwar years, but also the first generations of Range Rovers, Discoverys and Freelanders, as well as the 90s and 110s that were later to become the legendary Defender. Covering the vehicles’ history, spotlighting case studies of restored and otherwise much-loved examples and searching out stories of adventure behind the wheel, Land Rover: The Great British Classicc is a publication for everyone who admires Land Rovers from the early days.

The best LR ever?

et people talking about the best vehicle Land Rover has ever made and you’ll get a lot of different answers. But most enthusiasts of all things Solihull will have the 200Tdi Defender on their shortlist.

The original Tdi was a little more agricultural than the later 300. Its clutch is famously heavy and early ones had drum brakes at the back. But the engine is famous for its strength and simplicity, and it you keep it in fresh oil and filters it can go round and round the clock.

Series I (1948-1958)

The Series I, particularly in its 80” guise, is the most sought-after of

all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands

Series III (1971-1985)

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical

terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with.

Lightweight (1968-1984)

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular

Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the wings. Lightweights add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands

90/110 (1983-1990)

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can

also take you just about anywhere in the world. Early 90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

Of course, it’s very rare to find a Defender from this era in anything like its original condition. Most have been modified in some way and an increasing number have been rebuilt, often on galvanised chassis. You need to be diligent when buying such a vehicle – there are ringers out there, and the restoration scene can give them a place to hide from unwary buyers. But a 90 or 110 from this era can literally provide you with lifelong,

£5000-£75,000 for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon? Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s

£2500-£30,000 They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now. Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models

£3500-£22,000 out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of. Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A ’ ’ E over regular models means they command a price premium

£3000-£26,000 A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come. Pros: E E U potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition

Insure a 200Tdi Defender 90 with Adrian Flux from £165 depreciation-free motoring. The only car you’ll ever need – that is indeed a strong argument for being the best Landy ever!

much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88” would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy. The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of

refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body. Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing

Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971)

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real

rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models differed from everyday Series IIs by

101 (1972-1978)

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when

£7500-£26,000 the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys – not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA/IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures

127 (1985-1990)

The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which

having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop… Pros: A Land Rover like no , ’ Cons: E ,

and fittings from their Army life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards. Pros: Master of the road. Lovely V E sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running E ,

£7500-£25,000 took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a 127 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 127 is more of an enthusiast’s

motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money. Pros: E limitless potential and character Cons: U S had a colourful life

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£35,000 Defender 130 (1990-2016)

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for

decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes a tall order) and it’ll go round and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 300. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.

Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998)

The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though

the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve

Defender TDCi (2007-2016)

The last Defenders gained modern 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi engines and

smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defender that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been

The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R380, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion. Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around

£4500-£40,000

When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the

130 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007)

become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road… Pros: Strength and simplicity. D Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory

The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s

involed. You will always pay a premium for a Puma, and a Tdi or Td5 may turn out to be a better purchase. Even then, though, look after it and you may well never see depreciation. Pros: E , forts, off-road prowess Cons: Price, electronics, TDCi engine is unloved

£12,500-£30,000

If the subject of the new Defender comes up in enthusiast circles, try

As a result, you’ll find many more original(ish) 130s than 127s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further. Pros: A proper truck with huge capabilities in every area Cons: I ’ ’ actually need that much size

a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis. Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can

still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever. Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles

£45,000-£110,000

to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially,

making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value the way an original-shaper does, either. Be in no doubt, though – this is a superb vehicle. Pros: Comfort, capability, Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks ’

Freelander 1 (1997-2006)

The Freelander 1 is a cheap gateway into Land Rover ownership.

It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much

£400-£5500 more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that. Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

Freelander 2 (2006-2015)

The Freelander 2 was a massive improvement on the model

£2000-£18,500

it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a

bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having. Pros: R , , economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

Range Rover Classic (1970-96)£5000-£265,000 Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000

The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there

are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition – and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine.

Range Rover L322 (2002-12)

The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more re-

liable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one – especially the 4.4, though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why…

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013)

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s

a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues.

RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19)

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting

the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the road. Nevertheless, it is economical by Land Rover standards and

An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and access to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays. Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

£2250-£28,000 This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust. Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs

£12,500-£25,000 You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit. Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable. E

£9500-£47,000 because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with 4WD. Pros: E , , concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to

own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t

Range Rover L405 (2012-on) £27,000-£180,000

The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the

range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky.

RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on)

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than

the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover.

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on)

Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new

other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a premium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price

The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time,

Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you. Pros: Class, luxury, engines, vast all-round capability Cons: Price

£22,500-£160,000

Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild

Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £30,500-£95,000 Discovery 1 (1989-1998) because of its particularly handsome exterior. It’s based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace but has greater off-road ability and is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance. The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with

spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get. Pros: Luxury, price, a Land R ’ Cons: E B

with the same 100” wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now,

The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring. Pros: , , glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run

£31,600-£55,000 hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 Evoque escapes the electrification, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive. Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid

£800-£18,000 and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condition are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts E Cons: T ’ been doused in sea water

Discovery 2 (1998-2004)

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most

most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat

Discovery 5 (2017-on)

The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at

launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale – the new Defender will be going some to wrest that crown from it. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple for such a big vehicle. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very

£24,500-£80,000 convincing – as is an interior that might make you wonder why you’d bother paying more for a Range Rover. Just be careful not to go wild with the options and end up paying more for a Discovery… Pros: Immense blend of comfort and practicality Cons: Feels more like a softroader than a proper Discovery

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017)

The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road

and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear load area. The Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always

It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque, and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes. You

£13,000-£33,000 might shudder at the price if you’re buying new, though – but on the used market, there are some tidy looking deals to be had, even on high-spec examples. Pros: More practical than an E , S seats. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models

£21,000-£52,000 The Disco Sport is a premium medium-sized SUV. It’s available with seven seats and, by the standards of the competition, models with four-wheel drive offer a decent level of off-road ability. It’s a massively popular choice

for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid early last year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of

excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing pre-

mium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one. Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models

Another kind of unfinished project

WE’VE ALL SEEN PLENTY of unfinished projects in the classifieds. Almost always, they started out as someone’s super-ambitious project to build an off-roader that was going to change the world. This L322 Range Rover, on the other hand, is a differet kind of proposition altogether. Like most unfinished projects, it has already had thousands of pounts spent on it. Unlike those offroad calamities, however, much of this has gone on a spectacular custom paint scheme. This went on top of a body that wears an styling kit whose effect is to make it 8” wider than standard. This, says the owner, owes him £2500 on its own. Under those arches is a set of freshly powder-coated alloys, behind which the pads and discs have been renewed all round. There’s a custom exhaust, tinted windows, smoked lights, and remapped engine, and the battery, rad, fuel pump and fuel lines are all new. So, what’s unfinished about it? There’s a new steering wheel and a set of parking sensors to be fitted – but, says the owner, other commitments mean he won’t be able to give it the time these jobs need. The battery has an intermittent drain and the fuel pump needs priming on initial start-up, and the MOT has expired – though after a couple of ugly fails in 2015, the vehicle has been sailed through its tests with barely an advisory. So if you don’t mind a bit of work, this could be a lot of image for £6000. The vehicle is based in Stoke on Trent and is advertised opposite.

Spacious inside with 3 surrounding zipper windows, a skylight-style roof and built-in internal light and USB charging port, the Flinders rooftop tent is conveniently compact on the outside with a lower packed height for reduced wind drag and less added height to your vehicle.

ARB Simpson Rooftop Tent & Annex DA8981 The ultimate in ease and convenience The ARB Simpson III rooftop tent will provide the ultimate in ease and convenience when travelling. Unfolding in minutes, a rooftop tent provides sleeping quarters off the ground, protected from the elements. Getting off the beaten track and visiting parts less travelled is a key attraction when off-roading. Whether you’re planning on getting lost for a couple of days, or heading into more remote regions of the world, you’ll need some warm and convenient shelter. ARB’s range of tents, swags and has an array of options to suit every journey, and is complemented by a variety of optional accessories to make every camping adventure an enjoyable one.
