urnout queen, Sylvia Hauser, passed away in her sleep on Easter Sunday. Having tried her hand at banger racing she felt the need for more speed and bought herself a ’66 Mustang which she ran unofficially on a disused airfield. She then ventured to Santa Pod for the first time and, inspired by Paula Murphy in her Funny Car, decided to have a go at drag racing. Thanks to a friend, her first drive came in 1973 in the Swartz Brothers Pro-Stock Chevy Nova, then switched to Mopar with a Dodge Charger 440 named Mopar Miss. A production Dodge Challenger came next and, with help from her husband Geoff, Sylvia took the NDRC Production Championship. In 1980 the couple imported an NHRA record-holding Dodge Challenger which took the Top Modified win its first time out. Sylvia was the first UK driver, male

or female, to take all 5 national titles in one year, something she achieved in ’79, ’81, and ’83. Another achievement in 1981 was when Sylvia and her Challenger were featured in the April issue of this very publication. In 1984 Sylvia switched to Super Gas and the following year took the championship driving the fresh-out Ford Sierra Super Gasser built by Geoff. At the Summernationals the following year Sylvia emerged unscathed from a top-end crash

Early quarters

Dragstalgia at Santa Pod on 5-7 July will focus on the events that gave birth to drag racing in Britain six decades earlier. The Mooneyes and Dos Palmas dragsters which featured prominently in those formative years are once again being shipped across the Atlantic. Joining them will be Sydney Allard’s original British dragster, the Allard-Chrysler, on a rare outing from the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. 2024’s Mooneyes is a faithful replica of the 1963 original. Running a methanol-burning engine is a 350 Chevy sporting a front-mounted Potvin supercharger. It’s expected that Mooneyes will be fired up during Dragstalgia and may even perform burnouts. Dos Palmas is the original vehicle, with a chassis built by Tommy Ivo, and recently restored by Ray Evernham. Now owned by a British consortium, Dos Palmas will take pride of place at Dragstalgia. www.santapod.co.uk/dragstalgia

April marked a significant day in the history of the Ford Mustang when the legendary pony car turned 60. Just like the British monarch, the Mustang has two birthdays as its grand debut was to members of the press on 14 April 1964

however 17 April ’64 was the date it officially went on sale. The price for a base model was a princely $2368 and more than 300,000 Mustangs rolled off the production line in that first year. Happy Birthday Mustang!

ver the years, Gary Gunn has established Loaded Gunn Racing as having a proven track record across a multitude of motoring genres. The Wiltshire-based company has an enviable reputation

when it comes to building classic and contemporary race cars, speed record cars and, most relevant to CC readers, hot rods. Long-standing readers will recall Gary’s own one-of-a-kind Ford Pop coupe gracing the cover of our August ’13 issue.

Understandably, such credibility doesn’t go unnoticed in the Chippenham locale, especially when some of the diverse range of vehicles the company has built are seen driving about. It came as no surprise then that when local butcher Andy Crump

decided he needed a hot rodded pick-up in his life, he knew just who to get in touch with. Discussions ensued and Gary’s advice when it came to sourcing a suitable base vehicle was simple: it has to have the best body and chassis that you can find.

It wasn’t too long before Andy came across an unfinished (read abandoned) project for sale in the West End. On face value, it was all there, a very yellow ’56 Series 2 Chevy with a Camaro front clip and rear axle already installed. Under the bonnet

was a 350ci small block Chevy which the guys selling the project kindly struck up to prove to Andy it was a runner. In hindsight, the fact they instinctively shut it off just a few seconds later should have rung alarm bells, but by then Andy was smitten. On the

4. A tubular frame ties the front chassis rails together and provides substantial mounting points for the flip front mechanism

2. The Camaro steering rack was switched for one destined to be fitted to a Toyota Land Cruiser

5. The Camaro rear axle installation features 4-bar location and a Panhard rod

upside, the truck came with boxes full of parts to finish off the build, although very few of them proved to be of any use.

Gary did and he then spent the next 18 months refining everything until it worked and looked just as it should. One of the first jobs he did was drop the small block’s sump. “The big end shells were shot,” Gary confided. “I had to break the news to Andy that an engine rebuild was on the cards.” The news was better when it came to the bodywork, however. Gary’s brief had been met, and only minor remedial work was needed. In saying that, the panel gaps were in definite need of refinement, especially the front wings. The front end had already been converted to flip forward as a one-piece

assembly. It sort of worked, but generated plenty of head-scratching when it came to making it more efficient whilst not adversely interfering with the pick-up’s aesthetics. As expected, Gary sorted things out and refined the arrangement, and having seen it in operation myself I can testify that now it glides forward and flips up with a certain degree of elegance.

Bombshell

It did, however, tick the boxes when it came to Gary Gunn’s criteria, and having given it the once over he gave it his nod of approval. That wasn’t unconditional though, with Gary confessing: “I did have my reservations, but you only appreciate the true extent of the work needed when you get stuck into it. I guess it’s fair to say it was all there, but the work done needed refinement.” Getting stuck in is just what

Void issues

There was also the not-insignificant matter of the pair of sunroof holes cut into the cab roof. Searching through the boxes of parts that came with the truck proved fruitless;

11. With the rails powder coated the detailed rolling chassis was re-assembled

Above: No after-market pick-up bed floor here. Instead, Gary fitted synthetic decking boarding with stainless T-section insets

Above: Having sourced a second dashboard, Gary cut and shut both it and the original to form one better suited to the right-hand drive conversion. The nearside binnacle houses a solitary clock, whilst the binnacle in front of the driver is home to a set of Dolphin gauges Right: The custom centre console places the switch gear within easy reach and offers a couple of handy cup holders

12. With the body painted, final assembly was completed at the paint shop for ease of transportation

the sunroofs destined to fill that particular pair of voids were nowhere to be seen. Scouring the internet for suitable infills also proved fruitless as nothing of the right size could be found. Yet more refinement was needed, and that manifested itself by cutting more steel from the roof and fitting a larger single sunroof, which probably looks far better than twin glass panels ever would. The pick-up bed had already been converted to tilt rearwards, but again the mechanism was somewhat agricultural. Yet more refinement from Gary sorted that out, work that included the fabrication of a

The unfinished truck had no interior when the project was taken over by Gary. A pair of prestige car leather-trimmed electric seats were modified to fit, and had their fabric insets replaced with leather by South West Trimming in Calne. The same company also trimmed the door cards in leather along with the dash top, which features orange stitching to complement the paint. New headlining and carpet have been fitted, and the Ididit tilt column is topped off with a billet steering wheel

Shades of a Transformer toy. The flip front and pick-up bed not only ensure the Chevy stands out in a crowd, but also make for easier access to the running gear The industrial-size toolbox-style sliders were already fitted to the flip front when Andy bought the pick-up. Gary has since refined them, resulting in a smooth and easy slide and tilt mechanism

Helping to ensure things don’t get too hot, twin aftermarket electric cooling fans are mounted behind the landscape orientation radiator

In addition to the unknown-origin rear lights set into the wings, LED indicators have been fitted in the roll-top ends of the pick-up bed sides

hinged rear valance. The exhaust tailpipes exit through cut outs in the lower edge of the valance and the hinging allows it to open outwards to prevent the exhaust pipes from being crushed when the bed is raised. Clever. Another rear-end issue was with the unknown-origin tail lights that were in one of those cardboard boxes. The previous builder’s obvious intention was to mount these vertically, as the holes had already been cut in the trailing edges of the wings. The problem was the holes were too large, meaning yet more refinement was needed. The origin of the lights remains a mystery,

so please let us know if you can identify them and we’ll pass the info on to Gary.

Handiwork

Yet more head-scratching ensued when Andy announced he wanted the pickup converted to right-hand drive. A steering rack from a Toyota Land Cruiser provided what was the simplest part of the conversion, with the relocation of the steering rack and pedals proving far more time-consuming. That still left the gauges and switch gear out of reach for the driver, but that issue was rectified with the purchase of a second dashboard.

As mentioned, the running gear had already been upgraded to a Camaro clip up front along with the rear axle from the same car, its installation utilising 4-bar location, coilovers and a Panhard rod. Gary gave the running gear a thorough check over and having given everything the thumbs up he refurbished and re-plumbed the brakes. The standard Series 2 fuel tank mounted between the seats and the cab back panel has been retained and is concealed behind an ali panel along with the brake fluid reservoir. The radiator was remounted on its side, or landscape instead of portrait as Gary puts it, as that helped

when refining the flip front-end mechanism and is far less obtrusive when it comes to engine accessibility. The battery is fitted under the rear of the pick-up bed with the installation featuring remote charging / jump start terminals. The what can loosely be described as wiring that had previously been fitted was ripped out and a scratchbuilt loom was installed instead. Finishing touches included refreshing or replacing the limited exterior trim that has been retained. The pick-up debuted at last year’s National Hot Rod, Custom and American Car Show, where it was awarded a Top 8 placing in the Best in Britain lineup. Gary told us there are still a couple of jobs to be sorted: “The speedo needs calibrating and I need to design and fit a hydraulic or air-operated ram to assist in the raising

and lowering of the pick-up bed. I’m really pleased with how it drives; Andy wanted a comfortable and drivable truck for cruising in and he’s got exactly what he wanted.” With the refinement of the pick-up now complete, it was only right we asked Andy himself for his take on it. “I always wanted a pick-up but I can’t do left-hand hand drive. I knew there was another truck around town that Gary had converted so he was the man to turn to and he’s done a brilliant job. He was instrumental throughout, and I cannot thank him enough. Nothing was ever an issue for him. I am retiring around the same time as this issue hits the newsstands and with not working those long hours, I’m looking forward to having loads of spare time to enjoy driving it.” Sounds like a satisfied customer to us. CC

Thanks to Autocolour Ltd for the paint and South West Trimming for the interior. Andy would also like to express his gratitude to Gary Gunn.

Loaded Gunn Racing is based in Chippenham, Wilts. A new company website is coming soon, but in the meantime, you can contact Gary via email to info@loadedgunn.com or by calling 07704 622568.

The rear wings had already been stretched by 2-inches when Andy bought the pick-up. Gary has since refined all the bodywork to achieve perfect panel gaps. The cab has the more desirable big rear window and the glass that came with the package has been fitted using new rubbers all round

Reading custom car magazines while growing up inspired Dana Hinkle to build one of the most beautiful ’32 pick-ups California has ever seen

C

ustom cars have defined the story of Dana Hinkle’s life. He grew up in the sunny lands of San Diego, California, reading through piles of his old man’s car magazines from the 1960’s and marvelling at all that chrome, the amazing paintwork and the amount of detail that goes into each build. As he got older, he started building model cars and getting inspired by legends like Ed Roth, Gene Winfield, George Barris, Carl Casper, Darryl Starbird, Von Dutch and Larry Watson. It was then that he made a promise

to himself that one day he would build a business and retire early, so that he could dedicate his time fully to building custom cars. And that’s exactly what he did. After building that business and selling it all to retire at the age of 49, he settled into a blissful life of working on cars in his 2000 square foot garage. Man cave? Dana’s neighbour calls the garage ‘man’s town’. Let’s go back to Dana’s first build, though, way back in 1997 – while he was still

running his business, and working in a mere two-car garage (a mere two-car garage, shucks). He had wanted a ’56 Chevy since his high school days, and he made that dream come true in the shape of a pro-street rod. He did all the nuts and bolts, including the wiring and brakes – though a lack of funds and time meant it took him ten years to complete.

Once this project was finally finished, he could start looking to a rod building future with a bit more money in the bank and finally free from the pesky need to earn a living. Which brings us to the ’32 Ford pick-up you see here. Its story began when Dana started searching eBay for a new project and found himself a build that had been done in the seventies and was now in need of

restoration. So he went with his son Dylan to check it out. It was located about and hour and a half’s drive from where they lived in San Juan Capistrano. Dana was more interested in the body parts than the running gear, so he was pleased to find that the cab, doors and fenders looked great. The bed had a ton of body filler and wasn’t good enough to restore, but there was still enough about it to be worth a bid.

So they got back home and that’s what they did – and by auction’s end, they had themselves a Ford. Once they got it home, Dana and Dylan started to strip the entire truck. Dana was surprised that there was no rust in the doors and cab; it was chopped by three or four inches and, as the rest of the body panels were in great condition, he decided to keep the chop and keep the truck looking as it did

“The plan was to give it that mild 1960s’ custom look, with a few extra details to pay homage to those customisers from back in the day”

350 Chevy V8 running Weber carbs and Snyder cam sends 425bhp back through a TH400 tranny. Pete ‘Hot Dog’ Finlan put the paint on the block and firewall in world-class style, using white with Pagan Gold candy details

back in 1932. The plan was to give it that mild 1960s’ custom look, with a few extra details to pay homage to those customisers from back in the day.

Added detail

So his aim was to purchase off-the-shelf parts with that period correct look, from the likes of SoCal Speed Shop, Mooneyes and Speedy Way Motors, then add some detail to

them to make them more unique. He didn’t want to add an electric fan or fuel pump, nor power steering or uprated brakes – another aim of the build was to keep it simple and,

on to the ’32. Dana learnt later that ’32 fenders were a stand-alone year and can’t be interchanged with those from before or after. So that took him back to eBay in search of

above all, drivable. With all the parts purchased, Dana took the pick-up to his friend Steve at Steve’s Body Works. Steve liked the condition of the doors and cab, but noticed that the rear fenders were actually from a ’33 scabbed

’32 fenders. Sounds like a bit of a mission, but he saw that a guy in Maryland had a pair in good condition, so they were soon making the big trip west across the Heartland. As the front fenders were in terrible condition, Dana went with aftermarket ones

“Dana has this thing for chrome: he really loves it. His aim was to have every area of the build detailed”

15x8” Stockton rims are wrapped in US Royal and Radir Cheater whitewalls at the front and back respectively. The chrome on the wheels and the detailed paintwork on the hubs and nuts is jaw-dropping. The ’32 fenders were shipped across the States from an eBayer in Maryland after Dana’s friend Steve at Steve’s Body Works noticed that the previous owners had lashed them up with ’33s

from an early Ford. They would need some work to make them fit, but they would fit and that was enough. He then purchased a new bed from Mack Products, 6’’ shorter and ordered with no rivets. Their next stop was to collect all the parts and running gear from all the shops he had purchased them from. This included a stepped, boxed chassis, complete with front and rear suspension parts and a complete brake system including lines. As his two sons are into custom cars, Dana had them take part in the build. And as he is, in his own words, a ‘detail freak,’

all involved in the build had to have that mentality to pull it off in style. Dylan was 13 years old at the time and his other son Bryan, who was 29, came along to get stuck in too. They both helped their dad get the chassis rolling so he could take it back to Steve – who then spent several months getting the body in perfect order. Once Steve had finished, the truck came back to Dana’s garage, where they spent time putting it together. They installed a 350 Chevy engine and a Turbo 400 from Mike’s Transmission, before it was dyno tested at Machine Tech in Oceanside.

Perfect wheels

Their next step was to find the perfect wheels and tyres. Dana decided on 15x8” Stockton rims with Radir Cheater whitewall tyres at the rear and US Royals for the front. I think they complement the period look really well. Next on his list was to organise the bed with some new wood, so they made a visit to Frost Lumber in San Diego. Dana wanted to find a timber other than oak and he came up trumps with a wood called zebrano which hails from central Africa. Once this was installed, the last part to add was the awesome Mooneyes fuel tank.

‘It’s not meant to be kept in a garage and never see the light of day”

23’’ Car Chemistry baffles run into 4” diameter side pipes above where the running boards meet the cab, the latter made by Steve Fabrications in Escondido

At this point, all that was left to do was install the wiring, get 1400 chrome bolts from Gardner Westcott and have some unique one-off pieces fabricated for that real custom finish, before having the truck fully painted. ‘All that was left to do,’ yeeeessss… Dana visited another Steve, who owns Steve Fabrications in Escondido, as he’s known for creating some very special pieces. What he asked for was a rear nerf bar, licence plate holder, front spreader bar, push bumpers, drop column and shift, radiator

catch can, stainless steel water transfer pipes and fuel and trans hard lines. Dana also decided that 4” diameter side pipes would look cool running along the frame where the running board and cab meet, so Steve fabricated that too. They also installed 23’’ Car Chemistry baffles. When it came to the wiring, Dana used a Kwik Wire eight-circuit standard harness and Del City Performance solder sleeve terminals, which were then covered with Painless Performance Nylon Powerbraid

Dana handed the paintwork to Pete ‘Hot Dog’ Finlan, which is kind of like handing your guitar solos to Jimi Hendrix. This guy is more than just good. Having decided on Pagan Gold candy, Dana gave Pete free rein – with the proviso that it needed to be wild, stunning and over the top. He knew it was going to be insane – but even then, the results blew him away

split loom to give them the old-fashioned cloth-covered look. Again, it was all topped off with chrome… yes, chrome wire ties! Now that the chassis was back at Dana’s garage, the last part of the truck was ready to get the custom paint treatment. For this, he gave the body to a world-class custom painter by the name of Pete ‘Hot Dog’ Finlan, who can perform magic when it comes to custom paint, graphics and pinstriping. Dana decided on the colour being a Pagan Gold Candy, with pinstriping and graphics

Dana didn’t want his ’32 to be yet another truck with an oak pick-up bed so a visit to Frost Lumber in San Diego yielded a set of zebrano planks. This is an exotic, decorative timber whose pale heartwood is figured with dark brown stripes; sometimes known as zebrawood, it has in the past been used by Cadillac and Mercedes for interior veneers. It’s perfectly suited to the colour scheme of Dana’s truck and looks spectacular alongside a Mooneyes fuel tank (chromed, of course)

What’s better than being the man behind a world-class hot rod? Being the man behind two world-class hot rods, obviously. The ’32 pick-up is a thing of absolute beauty, but if anything Dana’s ’30 Tudor sedan almost makes it look understated

The finished vehicle contains a total of 1400 chrome bolts, washers and nuts. In addition, Dana took more than 450 individual pieces to Azteca Polishing in Escondido for chroming

on the doors. He gave Pete carte blanche on the truck, with the condition that it had to be stunning, insane and over the top.

Unimaginable

But Dana could not have imagined what started to transpire. Pete shot the frame in different shades of the Pagan Gold Candy, which he pinstriped and cleared. The engine, transmission and under the cab were all done in white, mixed with the candy. He also did the same with the firewall, under the fenders and running board, but this time with added gold leaf. Then the long process started on the top of the body panels, which I’m fairly sure you’ll agree came out just as stunning as the rest. Now that all the major parts were complete, the long task of assembly could begin. The fasteners and chrome bolts from Gardner Westcott were the perfect match for the rest of the truck; Dana couldn’t bear to see standard bolts fitted with the candy and chrome, which to him would

have looked unfinished. He used 12-point bolts with nylock nuts on all the mechanical parts, and button head with nylocks on the body panels and such. There were no more than two threads showing on all fasteners. As mentioned, there are 1400 chrome bolts, washers and nuts, with more than 450 pieces taken to Azteca Polishing in Escondido for chroming. Dana has this thing for chrome, you see: he really loves it. He is also of the mindset that painting parts and chroming them costs more or less the same – and chrome is easier to clean. He even got all the aluminium and stainless steel parts chromed, as his aim was to have every area of the build detailed. Once all the paint, engine, transmission and everything else was all assembled, the truck went to its final destination for the interior upholstery at Armando’s Custom Upholstery in San Jacinto. Armando had a Diamond Tuck design in white vinyl pearl with gold piping done to the seats, stitched

with gold thread. Also on the inside, Dana had a stereo system hidden under the seats. With his masterpiece finally completed and in immaculate show winning condition, was Dana going to drive it? Absolutely! ‘Some folks can’t believe that such a beautiful truck would be driven on the streets, because of all the work done to it,’ he told us. ‘But I love to drive every custom that I have. It is meant to be enjoyed by me and all that see it… it’s not meant to be kept in a garage and never see the light of day.’ That shouldn’t come as any surprise. Remember where we started, with the story of a young boy marvelling at these amazing cars in his dad’s magazines? No lad ever dreamt of one day building a car he wouldn’t ever drive anywhere, did he? And now that small boy has grown-up sons and they’ve built a world-class ’32 together, no way was it ever going to be for hiding under a bushel. It’s a street rod and a show-stopper – and the crowning glory of a lifetime’s devotion to the art of custom. CC

hen high end interior designer and all-round car guy, Brook Anderson, approached Valley Gas Speed Shop with the idea of building a limited run of re-imagined Jensen Interceptors, he started out on a path that was never going to be an easy one. Jimmy and ‘the unhinged crew’ at VGSS had already built two MGs for Brook, which had subsequently been sold to Scandinavia, so the idea was an extension of those builds. This time, though, they were to be “the ultimate expression of what a modern Interceptor may have been like,” as Jimmy Hibberd, boss man in the Valley, puts it. That is to say, they weren’t going to be simply modern engines dropped in old car, but completely re-imagined in every area. Or “the definition of luxury from a past era alongside 21st Century reliability, power and handling,” to quote from viperceptor.co.uk. The Jensen Interceptor was an interesting concept in its own right, an amalgamation of British engineering, Italian styling and American horsepower. The car was designed by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan, who also did design work for Ferrari and Maserati. Engines were sourced from Chrysler in the USA, initially 383ci big blocks, but, from 1971 onwards, low output 440s. Transmissions were the Chrysler standard 727 TorqueFlite. The whole package was then screwed together at the Jensen Motor’s factory in West Bromwich.

Luxo tourer

Designed to be a comfortable, powerful Grand Tourer, options included electric windows, reclining seats, a stereo system, power steering and air conditioning. However, the combination of a petrol crisis, ever-tightening legislation and a worldwide recession saw Jensen go into receivership in 1975, with production of the Interceptor ending the following year. The name made a brief reappearance in the late 1980s as a low volume car manufacturer, Jensen Cars Limited, this time choosing emissions-strangled Chrysler 360 power units, but that too went bust in 1993. Seemingly unwilling to die, the Jensen Interceptor re-surfaced again in 2010, this time as Jensen International Automotive, a re-branding of Oxfordshire-based JIA who had for some time been rebuilding original Jensens with Chevy LS2 motors. Coincidentally, that final phoenix moment happened around the same time as Brook approached Valley Gas.

Viperceptor_JUN24_8pgs.indd 31

29/04/2024 12:00

“The difference was they were just putting in new engines and doing some upgrades to old cars; we wanted to re-engineer the whole car and build a completely new version of it,” says Jimmy, admitting that some at least of the inspiration for how it could look came from a dynamic rendering that popped up on the Jensen Owners’ Club website.

Speed merchant

And so the Jensen Segrave was born. The name was Brook’s idea, a tribute to British speed pioneer, Sir Henry O’Neal de Hane Segrave, the first person to hold both land

and water speed records simultaneously way back in 1929. You’ll have noticed from the pictures that the badges on the car now read Viperceptor, which was the name the Valley Gas crew preferred, and the one seized upon by the media, so that’s what we’ll continue with here. The original concept was to build 10 cars, and then extend the brand to a run of five lightweight versions with a supercharger, sixspeed ’box and carbon fibre panels. “We told Brook the first one would be the most expensive to build as it was the

prototype,” recalls Jimmy. “As well as designing and building it all, we had to have badges made, source the wheels, trim treatments, all that stuff. And that all takes time, and money.” To put that into perspective, fitting the Chrysler 300C headlights they settled on seemed simple enough, until they went to check that the beam pattern was correct for UK roads. “I ended up having to take the sealed beam units apart and carefully re-make them so the lights pointed in the right direction,” remembers Jimmy. “I spent about 150 hours

“The original concept was to build 10 cars, and then extend the brand to a run of five lightweight versions with a supercharger, six-speed ’box and carbon fibre panels”

Weighing in at 1270kg, with 602bhp, gearing that gives the car a theoretical top speed of over 200mph and a rumbling, three-inch exhaust with Borla mufflers, this one-of-a-kind V10 Interceptor sounds like a beast and is a blast to drive.

on the first one, but then got the second one down to about 100 hours. That’s just the sort of development work you have to do. I was going to make a jig to do the others.”

Soul survivor

The original bolt together, pressed steel, double A-arm front suspension design was retained, but boxed for strength and with its geometry revised to increase both caster and camber, and to account for a six-inch drop in ride height. The leaf sprung, Salisbury rear axle was also kept, fitted with a PowerLok LSD and

2.89 long range gears. The halfshafts were machined for a second key way for security and Lotus-style anti-tramp bars now connect the top spring pivots to the axle housing to reduce spring wrap. The springs themselves were decambered and Spax two-way adjustable dampers feature on all four corners. Next up, a call to Hi-Spec brakes netted a set of 13½ and 14½-inch vented and slotted discs with four and six-pot calipers. Once again, however, the supplier had to do the development work – so these didn’t come cheap either.

Incidentally, these brakes are now available as an off-the-shelf upgrade so other Jensen owners can benefit, too. The net result is a vast improvement all round over the original 1973 car, but stopping short of a Roadster Shop-style completely new chassis under an old body. This car is still very much a Jensen Interceptor, just a better one.

Viper room

When it came to choosing an engine and transmission, the idea was to play on the original Chrysler-sourced powerplant, but

The wheelarch extensions add a bit of hench to the already muscular body design, and carefully chosen offsets on the wheels both fill them perfectly and increase track to further improve roadholding. Likewise, the front end has been smoothed and modernised, losing its bumper and bolt-on fog lights, though the four headlight treatment remains. That laser cut front grille is a Valley Gas one off, while the high output angel eye light units are from a Chrysler 300C. Nestled snugly under the hand-formed steel arch extensions are 20-inch split five spoke alloys from a Dodge Nitro wrapped in 255/35 ZR20 and 285/30 ZR20 Falken high performance radials

Above: Where once you would have found a Chrysler 383 or 440 big block, depending on year of model, there’s now an 8.3-litre V10 out of a Dodge Viper. It’s stock except for a re-map on the ECU and a free-flowing exhaust that pushes the power output up from 500 to a shade over 600bhp. The gearbox is still a Chrysler-sourced automatic, but a 48RE electronically-controlled four speed in place of the original 727 TorqueFlite Right: The -1 after the build number on the ID plate tells you this is the first Viperceptor built by Valley Gas. As things have turned out, it’s the only Viperceptor, though Jimmy says he’d build another one if the right customer came along

“After about 40mph it pulls like a train, and doesn’t stop pulling. It’s definitely a GT car” update it to 21st century technology. It being 2013 when this was all going on, stealing the V10 heart of the Dodge Viper seemed the logical step. “The Gen 3 Hemi was available back then, but they were mostly truck motors making about 300 horsepower, which just wasn’t enough,” says Jimmy with a smile. The Viper engines are a curious combo of Chrysler’s fabled LA small block architecture and Lamborghini design and engineering (Lambo was a subsidiary of Chrysler at the time the car’s development). Early ones were 8.0-litre (488ci) and made 400bhp and 465ft. lbs of torque, but this steadily increased over the years, first in the early 2000s to 8285cc (506ci) making 500bhp / 525lbf.ft of torque (the version used in the Viperceptor). In 2008, an 8382cc (513ci) VVT version produced 600bhp / 560lbf.ft, before the V10 peaked in 2015 at 645bhp / 600lbf.ft. An engine was sourced from a company in Florida that sold low mileage, bench tested,

cut-out motors, and came with a tweaked ECU and with a 48RE auto’ ’box from an SRT-10, the high-performance version of the Dodge Ram pick-up. “The original chassis is crap on these cars, so we made an entire new cage under the car to stiffen it up and to mount the new engine and ’box,” Jimmy explains. Similarly, the car’s bulkhead, inner wings, transmission tunnel and floor all had to be made from scratch.

Styling cues

All that before we get to the extensive body modifications, which are loosely based on that original rendering but modified and made workable by Jimmy before being created in steel by the crew at Valley Gas. Obvious are the flared ’arches and deeper sills and front and rear valances. More subtle but equally pleasing are the specially designed badges, fuel filler and air intakes and the bulge of the now cowl induction

bonnet – another item Jimmy remembers putting untold hours into creating. In keeping with the modernised feel, the rear light units are Lotus Elise, the electric door mirrors are from a late Ford Fiesta, while a total lack of handles and black chrome window frame trim against the gunmetal grey paint keep the whole thing smooth, slippery and stylish. The same formula was applied to the interior, which is essentially as Jensen Motors designed and built it, but subtly tweaked to bring it up to modern day standards and wrapped in a fresh coat of black leather. A first long road test up to the NEC for the Classic Car and Restoration Show proved all the work that had gone into the car’s re-design had paid off. It was a comfortable, capable and extremely fast (note the use of the word fast, rather than quick, due to the ‘lazy’ gearbox and 2.89 gears) grand tourer, which was exactly the plan all along. “It drives brilliantly,” says Jimmy enthusiastically. “It’s not a sports car. Off the line it’s like it’s got traction control, but after about 40mph it pulls like a train, and doesn’t stop pulling. It’s definitely a GT car. “If I was going to change anything – and this is something we talked about with the

“The idea was to play on the original Chrysler-sourced powerplant, but update it to 21st Century technology”

The Jensen Interceptor’s most recognisable feature, its huge wraparound rear screen / hatch and dramatic tapered C-pillars, have been retained, but the light units beneath it are from a Lotus Elise and the exhaust tail pipes and number plate aperture integrated into the rear valance bring the 1970’s design into the 21st Century

Tell us these two aren’t enjoying themselves! We’re big fans of the Resto Mod trend here at CC, but prefer such cars to retain some of their original soul, rather than having underpinnings that owe nothing to the original design. The best of both worlds, if you will

“A total lack of handles and black chrome window frame trim keep the whole thing smooth, slippery and stylish”

last owner – I’d put a whole Monaro rear end in it so it’d be independent all round, and fit taller gears. It would be an even better car then.” So, if this car ticks all the boxes of the original design brief, what happened to the limited production run that was to follow? Perhaps the timing just wasn’t right. Brook had other non-car projects on the go at the time that were swallowing a lot of money, then some changes in his personal life, so the prototype car was put up for sale – on Auto Trader of all places – for considerably less than its build cost. It was snapped up by a high-end car trader in Ireland who flipped it for a lot more than its build cost to a car collector and Jensen enthusiast in Texas, where it stayed until a force majeure brought it out into the light again. “A customer of ours, Jamie Burroughs, wanted to bring it back to the UK, but the guy

only agreed to sell it after a huge flood in Texas got into his underground garage,” says Jimmy. When it arrived back here, it proved temperamental at starting and had some bubbles in the paint that Jamie wanted sorting out. “He also said it drove terribly,” Jimmy continues, “so he booked it in with us to have a look at.” A four-wheel alignment sorted the drive, while a new fuel pump solved the starting issue. The reason for the bubbles in the paint on the sills and rear quarters became apparent when Jimmy drilled a couple of inspection holes and water poured out for about 10 minutes straight. Clearly, the flood damage was much worse than had been thought, so off came the sills and rear quarter bottoms so the car could be properly dried out, the metal treated

and new sills made and fitted. That obviously meant another trip to Berkshire Bodyshop for some fresh paint. Perhaps because of all this, the car was then put up for sale again, this time with Historics Auctioneers in Ascot in February this year, where the hammer fell at £91,040. We’d be interested to know who bought the Viperceptor this time round, and whether it will finally have an owner who appreciates it for what it is. It’s not a new AMG Mercedes, BMW M car or Maserati Gran Turismo – though there’s a high chance that all its owners up to this point wil have had something similar in their garages – it’s a unique, high-spec, classic built by a bunch of talented hot rodders who appreciate the car it started life as but wanted to build on that and improve it. Looking at it like that, we’d say it’s a job very well done. CC

Compare the Viperceptor’s leather-clad interior with a stock one and you’ll see how similar they are, though if you look closely there are subtle giveaways to its modernised soul. GPS speedo, sat nav screen in place of the analogue radio in a re-designed centre console, Vintage Air air conditioning and a hidden handbrake

Boot space remains useable, and you can still fit a set of golf clubs in there – supposedly the true mark of a GT car – while the three leather trimmed cubby holes are a useful design touch. Jimmy did plan to build some custom fit suitcases in the style of a Mercedes 300SL. Oh well, maybe the next one…

Words: Dave Biggadyke Pics: Adam Sayers and Buckland Automotive Engineering

PART 1: THE PERFECT PLATFORM

C

irca 2006, Adam Sayers embarked on a new project. Well, sort of. He did buy a 1930 Model A sedan though, which he then used as a garden shed for a number of years… before it went on to be relocated to his dad’s house, where its function in life remained unchanged. The project first made headway when a couple of hot rod builders who are no longer with us, Steve Lang and Dave Haskell, boxed the chassis rails and added a kick-up at the rear. It was, however, only a couple of years ago that things really started to progress with the build being taken on by Buckland Automotive Engineering. The rolling chassis has been built with so much attention to detail, we thought it only fair to show you it before it’s hidden away under the bodywork. The body itself has been finished to an equally high standard and is tastefully modified in keeping with the build style. Then, of course, there’s the focal point, the engine – which we will visit at another time.

Progress has been rapid, with the final assembly currently underway now the body has been painted. Keep your eyes out for the sedan when it’s unveiled later this year – you won’t want to miss this one.

Buckland Automotive Engineering is located in Roxton, Bedfordshire. The man behind the business is Adrian Smith, a dedicated hot rodder and renowned builder. Galleries of current and previous builds can be found on social media, or if you prefer to chat give Adrian a call on 07768 058060. Facebook: Buckland Automotive Instagram:@Buckland Automotive

Above: The sedan that Adam bought, before using the body for storage of the associated panels for a good number of years Right: The boxed Model A chassis with rear kick-up, as Adam delivered it to Buckland Automotive a couple of years ago

The sedan body was also rehoused in the Buckland Automotive workshop. We’ll come back to that in a few pages’ time, but note the firewall has been removed

There’s no doubting the beauty of a blown Hemi, but they do take up quite a lot of room – resulting in the chassis being stretched a couple of inches. Note the engine sits at an angle of 3 degrees to the chassis rails

That was to facilitate the engine and radiator being carefully positioned in relation to where the body would sit

There is no off-the-shelf bracketry here. Even the custom fabricated engine mounts are pleasing to the eye

The Super Bell axle, the last to be drilled by the late Steve Lang, hangs off a transverse leaf spring and is located by stainless steel hairpins. Custom top shock mounts have yet to be manufactured

“Built with so much attention to detail” The fully adjustable ladder bars were fabricated in-house and will be chrome plated before final assembly of the rolling chassis

Prior to the installation of the Ford 8-inch rear axle, Adam took it upon himself to polish the housing. Even though it will ultimately be painted. A man’s gotta do…

Some 35 hours of polishing later, the axle was ready to be installed. The hairpin angle is set to reflect that of the engine and transmission

JUNE 2024 CUSTOM CAR 41

5pp Workshop.indd 41

29/04/2024 14:49

One side of the bespoke chassis centre section plays home to the dual circuit brake master cylinder and servo

Even the removable transmission mount has been lovingly crafted from sheet steel…

…and detailed to resemble a pressed component fitted on the Ford production line. Not that Ford ever produced a car quite like this one

The chassis centre section was laser cut from 3mm sheet steel, with the dimple died flared holes being punched using a hydraulic press. The 8mm diameter rivets add both strength and aesthetic detail

The exhaust system, formed from 2.5 inch diameter stainless tube, features Profusion silencers and links up to a pair of aftermarket tubular headers

With the chassis stretched in the rear kick-up, new body mounting holes which incorporate captive nuts were positioned two inches further back along the rails, as was bracketry such as the running board mounts

Bespoke Panhard rods are fitted front and rear. They too will be paying a visit to the chrome platers

Thinking ahead to those weekends away at rods runs and the drag strip, Adam specified the need for a detachable tow bar. The housing also serves as a number plate mount

It’s the details that make all the difference, like the way the silencers run parallel to the ladder bars

PART 2: UP TOP

ith the bare set of rails transformed into a full rolling chassis, the natural progression for the project was then to mount the body on that chassis and attend to any remedial work needed – along with the change of the sedan’s profile that featured in owner Adam Sayers’ build plan. With the Model A having rolled off the line more than 90 years ago, it will come as no surprise that the metalwork wasn’t quite as

pristine as it once was. As can be seen in the pics here, the tin worm had really gone to town in the roof, rendering it beyond repair. That was the last area to be tackled, as first up was fabricating a new floor. With the body then having a sound base, attention turned to the roofline, in particular the height of the pillars that supported it. Over the years, Buckland Automotive Engineering has developed its expertise and amassed an extensive array of metal working machinery. A conventional metal

forming wheel, a Pullmax former, and a Tin Man’s Garage TMG 183 planishing hammer, with 25 different radius dies and five hoop sizes up to 36-inches deep, all played a part in massaging the fresh steel. So too did hand planishing, to replicate and add to what Ford produced almost a century ago. The role each piece of equipment undertook will be highlighted in this and the following instalment of the build feature. This truly was a labour of love – the fruits of which are outstanding.

With the chassis fully rolling, it was time for attention to turn to the sedan body – which undoubtedly was in need of plenty of attention

The body wheeled into position in readiness for lifting on to the chassis. The work needed on the roof is readily apparent but that will wait for now

When the body was mounted, the first jobs to be attended to were the lower body repairs and the fabrication of a complete new floor

The kick-up in the chassis rails dictated the need for floor sub-rails at the rear. These were fabricated from 2mm sheet steel

The floor was formed from 1.2mm sheet steel, with each section incorporating swages created on the Pullmax metal forming machine

How neat is that transmission tunnel? No prizes for guessing where the battery will ultimately be located

Note the alignment of the swages in the individual panels. It’s all about the planning, you know – this didn’t happen by chance!

With the floor complete, the centre sections of the body and door pillars were stripped back to bare metal

The telltale Sharpie notation reveals how much lower the roof is going to sit once the team at Buckland has completed the metalwork surgery

5pp Workshop.indd 46

29/04/2024 14:49

Those pre-marked 4-inch sections of steel were then carefully removed from each of the pillars

The first stage was to remove the roof completely. With the cuts made in the pillars, it didn’t take a lot of lifting

Compare the side profile of Adam’s freshly chopped car to the picture of a sedan on the wall in the background

The roof was then dropped back on and the pillars TIG welded. It wasn’t quite as simple as that sounds, but in essence that was it

The reduced height of the rear window aperture is even more pronounced…

“The tin worms had really gone to town in the roof”

…as is the front ‘screen opening. Note the box section bracing inside the body to keep everything square when the roof was removed

The original roof wooden bows were removed, highlighting the mammoth task that lay ahead…

The body was then blasted, except for what remained of the roof as no way would that have survived the process and what there was of it provided key reference points

…along with leaving a pile of rotten timber that’s not even worth bagging up for firewood.

Back on track The Easter Nationals may have been a late arrival in the 2024 calendar, but it was still a strong start to what promises to be a great year of race action at Santa Pod Lucas Oil Junior Dragster

Reigning champion Liam McDonald meant business from the word go, setting the pace throughout qualifying as Teddy Howe and twice championship runnerup Luke Muggridge led the chasing field. Into eliminations, McDonald had luck on his side as first Sam Fairhurst, then Tom Peters and finally Muggridge himself all lit cherries alongside him. Throw in a second-round bye and he strolled into the final – only to come unstuck as 8.4189/76.67 on an 8.34 dial was enough to give Ted Sullivan an early lead in the 2024 title race.

Modurstang Pro ET

This was the place to come for lurid wheelies, with John Bean putting on a series of crowd-pleasers in his Mustang. The first of these pleased him, too, when it led to a new PB of 9.1359 / 140.68. Amy Watkins was pulling wheelies too in her Firebird, though after vaulting into first place on her second qualifying run she was knocked back down the list when Dave Cherrett brought the Dark Revenger out for its first run and put it straight to the top. Both were sent packing in the first round of eliminations, however, Watkins beaten by Stevie

Gates and Cherrett red-lighting alongside Matt Dowdy. Almost half the field broke out in the following round – including Don Scott and Doug McClure, who did it head to head, McClure winning it on the smaller margin. Tom Kaye then beat Dave Fulton, also on a double breakout, while Nick Muggridge got away with it when Vic Parsons lit red. Muggridge was up against Gates in the final, the latter taking an emphatic win with a 8.6095 / 157.38 pass in his Camaro.

Peter Nee Super Pro ET John Bean put on a show with a succession of grown-up wheelies. The first of them turned itself into a new PB of 9.1359 / 140.68

Scott Hauser led all the way through a qualifying session which saw some start line drama when both front wheels detached themselves from Phil Toppin’s

The 2024 racing season at Santa Pod got off to a tricky start when the Festival of Power was postponed from Easter weekend to the end of April. A long, wet winter had saturated the car parks and camping areas, leaving them waterlogged and unusable – and with little chance of them being able to dry out in time for a major event, the organisers took decisive action early on to prevent uncertainty over what was going to be happening. That left a gap in the calendar, however – which was swiftly filled by a new, smaller event, the Easter Nationals. With fewer spectators than you see at A-list race meets like the Festival of Power, this provided a more manageable start to the season, getting the 2024 national championships underway – and preventing the postponement from causing a log jam of dates further down the line. It may not have been the big season opener we’re used to, but the Easter

Nationals still provided plenty of good action with a whole lot of PBs across the board and a number of cars and drivers making their debuts. The proceedings didn’t get off to the best of starts when Friday’s practice session started late and finished early thanks to yet more rain, but come Saturday the weather improved enough to let the fun begin – and with it, what promises to be a stonking season of action.

Phil Toppin didn’t have the best of events aboard Grandad’s Toy 2, his new altered in Super Pro ET, when, just as he launched on his third qualifying run, both his front wheels came away

new altered, Grandad’s Toy 2, just after he launched on his third run. Hauser the red lit as eliminations got underway but still went through on a bye – only to lose out to Barry Giles in the third round. Giles then beat reigning champion Alan Didwell to set up a final against Collin Morrice – which resulted in a double breakout, with 7.5087 / 173 on a 7.51 dial giving Giles the win.

Paul Hudson was bossing a small field early on, until Leah Kellett joined the fray aboard Dolly Daydream – aided by a torque converter loaned by Dave Day and quickly fitted in time for her to take part in the final qualifying run. That gave Kellett a bye into the semis, where she lit red to set up a final in which new sponsor Warren Watts lost out narrowly to Hudson’s 9.0203 /151.

Dave Cherrett’s Dark Revenger was untouchable in Pro ET qualifying – but lost out to Matt Dowdy’s Nova in its first elimination run, thanks to a red light on the tree

With its 540ci big-block freshly tuned by John Sleath, Tony Higgs’ Capri ran a series of PB top speeds as he stormed through to the Street Eliminator final – where he narrowly beat Andy Bond’s Ugly Sister Chevy

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator A class full of strong competitors saw Tony Higgs post a succession of PB top speeds in his big-block Capri, its engine newly tuned by John Sleath Racecars, culminating in a 195.44 semi-final run. Elliot Day, meanwhile, took the Perfect Light Award, put up by Cath and Tig Napier, with a 0.0213 RT on his second qualifying pass aboard his ’33 Willys. There was a PB 7.8446 / 188.92 for Victoria Smith in the second round of eliminations, in what is her first full season in Street Eliminator – but this wasn’t enough to beat Andy Bond’s 665ci Ugly Sister Chevy. Having topped qualifying with a 210.55mph final run, Bond then despatched Alan McSweeney’s Volvo – before losing out narrowly in the final to Higgs, the Capri pipping him to the line with 8.1525 / 181.42 beating 8.1811 / 203.29.

Running his ’33 Willys in Street Eliminator, Elliot Day took the Perfect Light Award with a 0.0213 RT on his second qualifying pass. There was a PB for him during the race, too

Victoria Smith ran a PB 7.8446 / 188.92 in the second round of eliminations, in what is her first full season in Street Eliminator. It wasn’t enough to beat Andy Bond on this occasion, but look out for plenty more from her beautifully presented Buick

Tony Morris Carburetors Super Gas

Bob Molden led the way throughout qualifying in the White Noise Peugeot, with Victor Parsons’ Plymouth Belvedere never far behind in second. But Parsons was to lose out to Dave Fulton’s 27T Brogie in the first elimination round, with Molden subsequently seen off by Stuart Doignie in another 27T. That left Doignie up against Stuart Harrison, who had waltzed through to the final on a bye after Wayne Hiscock broke out against him in the previous run. Harrison’s luck ended there, however, as Doignie’s 10.3220 / 127 was enough to take the honours.

Nic Williams won the Comp Eliminator title last year – taking it from his brother, 2022 champion Dan Williams. Both are among the favourites again this year, with Dan in a new car – as is Rouven Dawson, whose COPO Camaro was quickly up to speed in qualifying, however it was Nic who got the bye in the first round of eliminations after posting the fastest times on day one.

Eliminations also saw Dan Williams take advantage of a red light for Dawson, while Gary Carr’s Boyling Point Nova held off Rob Smallworth in his ’55 Chevy, fresh from a bit of sorting following a flame-out on the line in qualifying. Carr then put away Spencer Tramm in the semis, while Nic prevailed over Dan in the battle of the brothers – before taking an emphatic win with an 8.1636 / 145.73 final pass.

Hutchinson and Dibley Sportsman ET

Local man Chris Layram was top dog in qualifying, ahead of Richard Palmer’s Jag XKR – only to light a cherry in his first elimination run, putting it on a place for Terry Attree. He in turn lost out to the Trans Am of 2023 champ Gary Lake in the third round of eliminations, before the semis were decided by Brian Huxley’s break-out and Kirstie Tramm’s red light – setting up a showdown between Lake and Palmer. It was the reigning title holder who prevailed, posting 14.1230 / 90.09 on a 14.02 dial.

Gary Carr went all the way to the Comp Eliminator final in his Nova, only to find Nic Williams in no mood to relinquish the crown he won last year

f there is a breed of race car that stood out as the wild child of the sixties, it had to be the blown fuel altereds. Stuffing a nitro-snorting motor into a short wheelbase chassis, which was partially cloaked in an old style body, was indeed a recipe for an unpredictable race car! For my own part, it was the pictures of Dale Emery, wrestling with the original Pure Hell machine of Rich Guasco over in California, that stood above all others. This is a fascination shared by Nick Davies, who commented; “A 60 year old bloke shouldn’t have heroes - but Dale in Pure Hell was the master for me. I wanted to see what it was like to drive one like that. This is not a car being built to be the quickest. If I can eventually manage to run any sort of six, and hit 200mph, I will be well pleased.” One would be forgiven for thinking that someone who has built and driven the

awesome Havoc altered to times of 6.1s, at a shade under 240mph - not to mention the 5 second Pro Mod Firebird - would have no real need to build a new car. However, we are talking about a true passion project in the works, in the form of the ‘No Quarter’ steel-bodied Topolino. Havoc is only 10mph shy of the sleek Pro Mod entry he has also been competing in. This is very impressive, but Nick considers it is too fast for what it is, and he worries that it could deter potential new entrants. “It is like competing in two different sports, when comparing the two cars. I get a lot from driving the Pro Mod but right from firing up Havoc, it makes my hairs stand on end!” “I was quite happy building the Topolino to run on my own, but Rob (Loaring) started talking to other people - and there seemed to be some interest in building these old style altereds. Nick figured that he had

better draw up some basic guidelines, after discussion with early interested parties, for what has become known as Old School Classic Altered Racers - OSCAR. Maximum wheelbase is 110 inches, with 25% max engine setback. No supercharger bigger than 8-71, flowing a minimum 60% nitro load. Wheelie bars are restricted to 36 inches long. No wings allowed, unless it is a historic recreation. A clutch is mandatory. A minimum 13 inch from track to crank centreline is specified; while to avoid massive motors there is a minimum weight per cubic inch requirement of 4.5 pounds. He is keen to point out that this is not a new race class, but a bunch of old blokes having fun racing together, to their own brief. A new car from the home of Havoc is always going to be of great interest, and I managed to invite myself along for a visit to his workshop recently, to take a look at

Scott Barnes, at left, will team with Nick in running the car. Rob and Nick to the right of the car. The body is likely to be unpainted for the first year or two

The front end of the body has seen a neat job by Wayne Allman, in reprofiling the two original top louvre panels, to allow the blower to protrude. Only 56 openings to cut and shut!

With space at a premium, much thought has to go into where important items of hardware can be incorporated

how the new build is progressing. Parts have been gradually accumulated over a good few years, with the thought of one day actually building it. A fibreglass body would be easier to fit, but for this machine it had to be a real steel one. To Nick it was an emotional thing, with all the history locked up in the body. The talented Wayne Allman has worked his magic on it, to achieve the desired alterations. One of the aims was to be able to run with a minimal crew, and have the ability to service the car on his own. With work demands on Nick and Rob, who run ICE Automotive; only one day a week is available to make progress on the new car. To try and speed up the build, Nick is being assisted by Rob, and Scott Barnes. They do not hang around, as they try to get the new car ready for a first appearance at this year’s Dragstalgia. Biggest problem, as Rob related, is the lack of space to fit everything. The 110 inch wheelbase limit, and no wing,

The steering wheel may look a little rough, but is highly prized, as it is a survivor out of Tee Rat. The cockpit is plenty close enough to the motor

A practical demonstration of why the roll cage has not yet been welded in position

was to specifically exclude Havoc, but this restriction will not worry the new build, which boasts a mere 99 inch wheelbase! Rob is gradually progressing with his own T-bodied build, which is a recreation of his own dream car - Tee Rat. However, he requires somewhat more breathing space in his car than Nick’s Topo! A third car is also in the works for a friend of his, Martin Baldwin. All three cars have similar basic chassis layouts, which were fabricated by Scott and Rob. The first entrant in this new group, and featured in last month’s CC, made its debut at last year’s Hot Rod Drags, when Bryan Whitfield took to the track for a shakedown launch in the beautifully prepared High Spirits. This proudly displayed the OSCAR name on the sides. Jon Webster is well advanced with his own take on the good old Moggie, which will be another classy entrant. Robin Read is the latest

to announce his intention of joining the ranks - with a nitro Daimler powered SP250 Daimler, no less! Based on a Norm Wheeldon chassis, this should prove to be a most interesting entry. A couple of other names are said to be looking closely at building, which is very heartening for anyone who loves to see wild, old style cars - that look, sound and smell good!. These old school racers should truly whet the appetite for race fans when they do all come together in the next year or so. These are all genuine old school lovers, as Nick himself observed, as he noted that none of the drivers currently building cars is under 60 years old. Got to be a super way to grow old with attitude in my book! Do not worry about Havoc, though. It will be out there, ready to do battle with some much welcome American competition at Santa Pod, when the much anticipated Dragstalgia event unfolds!

The first OSCAR runner made it out on track at Santa Pod last September. The Whitfield and Tubb entry has set a high bar in the looks department - and it sounds great!

As an added novelty, there was also a dog show which owners could enter and possibly win their canine companions a trophy. Walking around and talking to the participants, it was particularly clear that everyone was really enjoying the laid-

back atmosphere of the show and how well organised it was – not to mention the variety and quality of the vehicles on display. Come 3pm, it was time for trophies to be handed out and people started to make their way home. The show encompasses everything a local show should be: no egos, a chilled out vibe and plenty to do.
