a new era THE PAST YEAR AND A HALF ushered in a new era; one in which we’ve had to change and adapt—sometimes with ease,

but occasionally with difficulty and at great expense. That sort of perseverance is not unlike the kind required to restore the homes featured in this issue: Properties that have endured the test of time, yet ones requiring tremendous vision, fresh perspectives and significant efforts to preserve parts of their past while making them current and appropriate for today’s lifestyle. From a masterful, award-winning renovation of a Queen Anne Victorian on the shores of Lake Michigan (page 66), to the restoration of a 19th-century timber farm and the original home nestled under that tree canopy (page 84), to the modern interpretation of an 18th-century Williamsburg Saltbox-style home (page 98), this issue reveals projects that perfectly balance the present with preservation. Curious about how the retail landscape has changed postpandemic, or pre-planning for holiday shopping? Turning a New Leaf For a quarter of a century, BOXWOODS GARDENS & GIFTS has been a staple for gardens and gifts, but this year they’ve turned a new leaf. It’s difficult to discern the new collection of permanent orchids, hydrangeas and succulents from the vast selection of real flowers in the nursery. The permanent magnolias will make a magnificent addition to your holiday table until the real blooms appear in spring. Also new on the shelves are The Silver Birch candles—Boxwoods’ own fresh, woodsy scent. SCAD preservation efforts yield great rewards for an Atlanta landmark residence Written by SUZANNA CULLEN HAMILTON

22

ONE OF ATLANTA’S OLDEST surviving Victorian-Queen Anne Revival homes, Ivy Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places and a designated Atlanta landmark building. As impressive as those accolades are, Ivy Hall’s most recent iteration is equally remarkable and notable for both the city and the arts. In 1883 real estate developer Edward Peters commissioned renowned Swedish architect Gottfried Norrman to design the residence—a home that remained in the Peters family for over a century. Ivy Hall takes its name from the abundant ivy aesthetics Norrman integrated into the architecture that range from ivy wood carvings to a gilded quote from Charles Dickens’ poem The Ivy Green. The house survived the Great Atlanta Fire of 1917, and went on to become a restaurant. Today the 138-year-old residence is used for events and education in the arts. When the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) acquired Ivy Hall, the house required extensive restoration—a process that was documented on PBS in The Art of Restoration. SCAD

preservation design students conducted archival research, materials analysis and hands-on conservation. Exceptional efforts for adaptive reuse by the SCAD preservation team included reusing milled roof timbers for flooring, window and millwork repairs, as well as excavated sand for masonry mortar mix. SCAD interior design students integrated modern lighting systems and chose historically accurate paint colors for the interiors. SCAD has received numerous awards for the restoration including the Georgia Trust Preservation Award for Excellence and the Philip Trammell Shutze Award for Craftsmanship from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. Ivy Hall remains a vital part of SCAD’s Atlanta campus and has served as an artist residence, literary salon, event space and lecture hall. With renowned authors including Margaret Atwood, Colson Whitehead and Augusten Burroughs gracing the residence with readings, Ivy Hall continues to write her own illustrious path in Atlanta’s architectural annals.

Though scores of consumers turned to shopping online over the past 18 months, the Phipps management team feels bullish. “In-person retail will always be relevant because people crave connecting in real life and find joy in discovering the new and different,” says general manager Eric Howard. “‘Touch, feel, try and buy’ is the top reason why consumers continue to choose shopping in physical stores versus online.” simon.com/mall/phipps-plaza

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE Supply chain delays are a sign of the times. Local experts weigh in. Interior Designer Tish Mills Kirk Tish Mills Interiors CHALLENGES: While the world shut down, our industry exploded. People decided to renovate, redo interiors or build new. LONGER LEADS—EARLY 2020 TO NOW: Almost double for most items. I used to order upholstery two to four months in advance, now it’s more like six to eight months. ADJUSTING EXPECTATIONS: I’d rather us pay storage on items [ordered early] than have a halffinished home. All reports project well into 2022 before the supply chain issues resolve.

Landscape Architect Charlie Sears Land Plus Associates CHALLENGES: Material and labor shortages are still prevalent across the board, from PVC piping for pools, plumbing and drainage on the front end to the plant material at the back end. LONGER LEADS—EARLY 2020 TO NOW: Nearly all lead times remain longer than before the 26

pandemic. Some manufacturers or suppliers have good inventory but struggle to provide shipping. The most impactful situations are when the material or product is just not readily available. WORK-AROUNDS: The right material in the right place makes all the difference. We try to identify materials and finishes that will have longer lead times and plan ahead.

Builder Michael Ladisic Ladisic Fine Homes CHALLENGES: There’s been 15 price increases just this year on steel, and lumber has increased. Appliances are taking five to six months, compared to a month before the pandemic. You have to do a much better job of planning now. LONGER LEADS—EARLY 2020 TO NOW: Even with excellent planning, projects are taking 15%–20% longer. WORK-AROUNDS: I just bought 50 sheets of birch for custom cabinetry and bookshelves. I don’t have an immediate use for them, but I don’t know when I’ll have access again [so I’m storing them].

Naomi Von Habersham I’VE ALWAYS HAD A WEAKNESS for a good makeover. It’s amazing what a flattering haircut, the right clothes and expertly applied makeup can do for a person, as I used to witness weekly on one of my all-time favorite reality shows What Not to Wear. But rooms can benefit from makeovers too. As that patron saint of decorating Dorothy Draper once said, “We have all seen a woman whose dress is a beautiful shade but so badly cut for her particular figure that she completely lacks style. Just the same thing may be true of your house.” Take a room’s paint color, for example. How many times have we chosen a paint shade, only to discover after the room has been painted that the color is all wrong? At that point, you’ve got two options: Go back to the drawing board, figure out what color is right for that room and then hire the painter to come back and paint it a second time; or, learn to live with it. What about that new sofa that looked so trim in the furniture showroom, but when it was delivered to your living room, it had seemingly grown so large in size that it practically swallowed up the entire room? Maybe it’s not even a decorating mistake that is your home’s problem. Perhaps it is simply stuck in a style rut and in desperate need of a refresh. If any of these maladies describe a room or rooms in your house, then it’s time for a design makeover, which, I should stress, doesn’t have to break the bank. Unless your home is a complete disaster, you don’t have to purge everything and then start from scratch. A fresh lick of paint (in a flattering shade, of course), updated upholstery, new curtains, correctly scaled furniture or even modern lampshades can do wonders for a room. With a little tweaking here and there, or perhaps even a major overhaul, makeovers, especially when done by professionals, can turn a not particularly becoming “before” into a bewitching “after.”

THE WORLD IS AT ARM’S reach in Lucian Books and Wine, conceptualized by owners and real-life partners Katie Barringer and Jordan Smelt, along with business partner Mickey Mixson. There’s a special aura surrounding the hybrid wine bar-bookshop—one that, despite the bustle of Peachtree Road outside, embraces sophisticated simplicity. The interiors, led by Seiber Design, were inspired several years ago by a Josef Albers piece. Wine-colored walls, statement lighting and a black-and-white tile floor demand attention, but the real stars of the show? Rows upon rows of wine storage above the kitchen entrance for Smelt, and an entire wall of filled-to-the-brim bookshelves for Barringer. “What we envisioned was something polished but not pretentious; welcoming, warm and above all, beautiful,” she says. The menu, created by Lucian’s executive chef Brian Hendrickson, is curated around simplicity, seasonality and the flavors’ friendliness to wine. With a 300-bottle wine list that is organized by grape then by region (and also A-Z if you turn to the back), Smelt makes it easy for guests to find exactly what they want. “We wanted the wine list to be equally accessible for guests who know exactly what they like to drink, and for those who are open to exploration.” And that’s what Lucian is about: exploring life, whether with a sip of wine or a beautiful book, says Barringer. “After the sudden shrinking of our worlds in 2020, things that once felt small and routine—like a bottle of wine, a book, a meal with friends—now feel much more significant and special.”

YOUR HELP CHANGES LIVES “Camp is my safe place and my favorite week of the year. I look forward to coming for months beforehand and sob when it’s time to leave. I am so thankful to be a part of a community and support system”

Camp Twin Lakes powers transformative camp experiences for over 10,000 kids each year with serious illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges. Through week-long summer camps, day camps, and weekend retreats at medically supportive and two fully adaptive campsites (with a third being built), campers grow in their confidence and experience the joys of childhood while learning how to overcome obstacles and turn challenges into triumphs.

Make Room

The inviting living room features ample seating where generations of family gather. A large ottoman from Mrs. Howard anchors the area while a patinated chandelier from EdgarReeves offers interest to the beamed ceiling. An antique chest from Joseph Konrad mixes seamlessly with modern upholstery.

W WHEN CHRISTOPHER REEVE starred in Somewhere in Time, it offered a glimpse into the previous century when people escaped hot summers in the city for a more genteel lifestyle by the water. Set in 1912 and filmed at the famed Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, the film transported viewers to the shores of Lake Michigan where generations of families gathered for relaxed but refined vacations. In 2012, nationally renowned designer Jackye Lanham ventured to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to see the magnificent home (which won a Philip Trammell Shutze award for renovation in 2016) her Atlanta-based clients had purchased. Upon arrival, she felt transported in time. “Harbor Springs is a small, late 19th-century town on Lake Michigan where there’s tremendous respect for the ritual of generations of families gathering in summer, and where time moves slower,” says Lanham. The Point is only reachable by boat, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage—a reminder that civility and tradition are more valued than convenience in Harbor Springs.

right, top to bottom The large walk-in butler’s pantry is perfect for storing all of the tableware required for running a large summer home. The original beveledglass windows are sculptural against the white walls and dark floors. opposite Lanham had the home’s original 12-foot-wide refrigerator refurbished to create a completely authentic interior.

The owners both grew up spending summers on the shores of Harbor Springs with their families, so recreating that experience to share with their children and grandchildren was paramount. When they purchased an original 19th-century home, they asked Lanham to renovate and design the 12-bedroom, four-story dwelling. Relocating the kitchen, updating all of the plumbing and wiring, raising the ceilings, winterizing the home and adding an additional porch were among the many renovations Lanham undertook. However, Lanham went even further in her efforts: All of the original fixtures, fittings and hardware were replated; the original porcelain and cast-iron sinks were retained; and the original 1920s 12-foot-wide refrigerator was refurbished. “The house took several years to renovate and restore because of the seasonal logistics as well as our commitment to use as much from the original home as possible,” says Lanham. The designer remained authentic to period details at every opportunity. “In the early 20th century, the trains would arrive from Grand Rapids, Michigan, loaded with furniture, and residents would meet the train to purchase goods,” says Lanham. “Those pieces were so well-made that we decided to update the home’s original furnishings and incorporate them into the new design.” In her signature style and with great panache, Lanham painted the pieces white and dressed them in linens and cottons befitting of summer holidays. While this period home appears to be a grand dame on the exterior, on the interior she’s an authentic Victorian shingle house that remains a beloved family home. See Resources, Back of Book. 73

ONCE MAJESTIC, the years had not been kind to Tarva, a nearly 3,000-acre 19thcentury farm with a lakelike pond and thick forests filled with fragrant pine, Eastern cedar and centuries-old live oaks. One of several such homesteads in Albany, the area is a world-renowned bobwhite quail habitat. A lifeline came in 2017, when a visionary party bought the property and tapped landscape designer Carson McElheney and interior designer Susan Lapelle to preserve the land and restore the frame house that stood there. “It’s a magnificent heirloom property,” says McElheney. “They wanted to bring it back to its former glory.” Rebuilding the crumbling brick columns on the front gate went a long way in that effort. McElheney also relocated many of the existing camellias and cleaned up the 200-year-old oak trees, carefully removing the invasive thicket of vines that threatened to strangle them. In addition, he created a new rear patio made of reclaimed brick pavers. Surrounded by sculptural boxwood and flowering hydrangea, it’s a lovely setting for a reclaimed-oak

dining table that easily sits 10. “This is one of the key areas of the property,” he says. “The clients love to entertain.” Lapelle updated the interiors in much the same fashion, honoring the property’s storied history while updating it with modern conveniences. Although it had suffered water damage in spots, she persuaded her clients to keep and restore the hand-painted floral mural in the home’s unique cross-corridor, which is designed to funnel cooling breezes through the interior. “It’s beautiful and authentic to the property,” she explains. Lapelle had no such compunction about ripping out the 1970s-era shag carpeting and restoring the hardwood floors underneath it. That alone created a more suitable backdrop for a mix of antiques, heirlooms and new upholstered pieces. In the living room, an antique mahogany bookcase and other antiques coexist beautifully with new lounge chairs covered in a light blue linen velvet that’s both elegant and easy to clean—a must for a house that’s often filled with field sports enthusiasts. “There are no decorating gimmicks or tricks,” says Lapelle. 91

That’s also the case in the breakfast area, where a new pecky cypress-clad ceiling plays off white shiplap walls—an up-to-date look that doesn’t seem out of sync with the architecture. “It looks clean, casual and not too fussy,” she says. Updated with shiplap walls, handsome cabinetry and white marble counters, the bathrooms are equally timeless. It’s easy to see why the new owners enjoy it so much, hosting both intimate gatherings and large bashes there. According to Lapelle, who has attended several such soirees, being there is all about eating, having fun and playing cards. “They want you to come in and enjoy,” she says. “Southerners are house-proud and very gracious.” See Resources, Back of Book.

FOR ATLANTA HOMEOWNERS Jared Paul and Kelley Harris, a bit of serendipity led them to their current residence in Buckhead where they’ve lived for the past four years. “We literally found this house by mistake on Zillow,” says Paul with a laugh. But leading up to this discovery was, by any means, no laughing matter. The couple had grown dispirited after already having made an offer on another house only to have contract negotiations stall.“We were looking for a project, something closer to our respective jobs,” says Harris, when Paul accidentally swiped his iPad screen while looking at other residences. His finger landed on the place they now call home. Although they weren’t even searching anywhere near the neighborhood, says Harris, “We were looking for a house that had some age to it but had not been updated or renovated, and this one checked all the boxes in the photo. It looked like time had stopped.” Paul and Harris recall that others who viewed the house while it was on the market didn’t quite know what to make of it. The structure is nestled into the landscape on the highest perch of the steep woodland lot, is imbued with references to Colonial Williamsburg both inside and out and was lacking storage. “There were no real closets, and there was no laundry where you could get to the washer and dryer without leaving the house,” says Paul. The space was only accessible by going outside and descending to a basement. The rest of the home’s structured flow and organization also left some potential

buyers puzzled. “It’s not an open floor plan by any stretch of the imagination,” adds Paul. In someone else’s hands, the understated residence—clocking in at about 2,000 square feet—could have been considered a teardown because of its desirable Buckhead location. But these two interior design aficionados—Harris is the principal of Harris Interiors, and Paul is the owner of the Paul+ showroom at ADAC—knew they unearthed a jewel of a house built with time-honored techniques, including square nailheads, hand-planed hardwood floors and one room still featuring its original green milk paint walls. This was not a cartoonish imitation of a historic home, but rather an amalgamation of ideas executed with the highest level of craftsmanship, and the two quickly realized that they could marry the home’s historic references with present-day living in a way that could work for their mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings and art. “We made the house look like us, but not look like a UFO landed inside it,” says Paul. And so began the quest for authenticity, which drove each and every decision. Designed by architect Thomas G. Little for his own family, the 1949 structure channels many of the hallmarks of Colonial Williamsburg where Little had previously been a lead architect before becoming a preservation architect for the State of Georgia. Little and his wife, Charlotte, had a keen eye for details, most of which remain today. Sadly, the two were killed in the tragic Orly plane crash in Paris that killed 106 Atlanta arts patrons in 1962. For Paul and Harris, the end goal was how to live in the house without feeling like a museum period piece or stage set. Surprisingly, the two found the house extremely versatile without having to expand the home’s footprint. The 8-foot-4 ceilings initially gave them pause (they were coming from a residence with 10-plus-foot ceilings), but they soon grew to love the intimate nature of the spaces. 103

A trip to various projects that Little had worked on at Colonial Williamsburg helped inform some of their future design decision-making, which turned into a 2.5-year renovation. “We actually found solutions at Williamsburg for some of the things we were struggling with,” adds Harris. The biggest transformation was annexing a guest room to create an expansive main bath, closet and laundry. When it came to moving walls, the two consulted with architect Rodolfo Castro to advise on maintaining the home’s structural integrity. Today, the bones of the house—including the living room’s green milk paint walls— have become the perfect backdrop for the couple’s mélange of contemporary furnishings and artwork, as well as more traditional Southern antiques. The milk paint wall color also inspired the palette throughout the rest of the house, including the main bath that’s completely enveloped in penny tiles in a similar hue. In another fortuitous moment, the home’s aging slate roof was in dire need of repair. (Sixty years is not a long lifespan for slate, but Paul and Harris learned that the Littles had sourced antique slate tiles for the house when it was built, so they were actually considerably older than previously imagined.) Fearing a replacement would be cost prohibitive, the two looked at a cedar shake substitute, but then a local source presented them with just enough slate for their project—it had come from a teardown and the owner had been holding on to the pieces for about a decade. “The roof worked out beautifully,” says Paul. The best part? “It was the same Vermont slate,” he adds. In a more recent nod to bridging the past with the present, Paul and Harris commissioned Colonial Williamsburg’s blacksmith to hand forge all of the shutter dogs that flank the home’s exterior windows. The process took 18 months, with each one made over the hot flames of an open firepit, but that painstaking attention to detail is something that the original owners, the Littles, would no doubt approve of.
