FROM THE EDITOR

Editor’s Eye What I’m loving this month

if it’s not broken... HOW DOES YOUR home celebrate the classics? Are you embracing a less-efficient floor plan in a historic home?

Mark D. Sikes takes us back to the basics in his latest Schumacher collaboration. The Birdie Ticking Stripe is a playful take on a classic motif. schumacher.com

Or are you filling your corners with estate-sale finds and history-filled antiques? Perhaps you’re living in a contemporary-forward space, and your nod is an impressive collection of vinyl records that transport you to decades past. However it may look for you, there’s a reason they say that nothing beats the classics. Our April issue shows three homes that are honoring their original roots as they transition into their next phase of life. In Buckhead, Bradford Lowry Interiors and Norman Davenport Askins, Architect kept the charm of a 1960s ranch, but raised the

roofline and infused youthful flair so the home could live larger for the young family inhabiting it (page 34). In Inman Park, Lauren Elaine Interiors gives a Southern spin to classic English character (page 52), whereas designer Brian Patrick Flynn took a fearless approach to pattern and color in a Mediterranean-style abode in Ansley Park (page 70). Don’t miss designer Anna-Louise Wolfe as she fashions a Palm Beach Chic ladies luncheon (page 16), and we reveal our ultraluxurious favorite releases from Paris Deco Off (page 12). BEAUTIFUL IN BLUE

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Tell us about the theme of your tabletop. What was the inspiration? ANNA-LOUISE WOLFE: Our theme was silver and shells! My client and I both have a ton of silver—from our families and that we have collected on our own. The seashell mirror that hangs over the antique chest is a focal point in the room that nods to my client’s love for the beach. I have always referred to our decorating style for her home as “Palm Beach Chic.” AH&L: A luncheon typically feels less formal than a dinner party. What entertaining elements are different when you’re hosting during the day versus at night? ALW: I wanted it to be a ladies luncheon complete with candy and Champagne, simply so that it would feel more fun and relaxed than a formal dinner party, while still being elegant. I feel like a formal dinner requires white tablecloths and bread and butter plates, but a luncheon can be a little bit more casual while still being proper and pretty. AH&L: Your design features tons of incredible silver! Tell us

18

more about that. ALW: Being raised in the South, my client and I both grew up using, inherited, and have a penchant for sterling silver. It’s elegant while still being unbreakable—we are convinced that it will make a comeback. AH&L: The dining room’s array of playful patterns makes a statement without feeling overpowering. What is your approach to mixing and matching to achieve a sophisticated look? ALW: I tend to start with what I refer to as the “lead pattern” in the room—which in this case was the wallpaper—and then we selected everything else from there, pulling the colors from the details in the wallpaper. I try to balance the mix of large- and small-scale pattern and solids so that it creates a treat for the eye. But not too much action, or the room will start to feel busy. AH&L: We spy fun details throughout, from the birds, to the bows on the napkins, and candy hearts on the drinks table. What would you say no tabletop is complete without? ALW: I am a huge fan of china and have too many collections to

count, so I would definitely say pretty plates. I would follow up with flowers, cloth napkins, and some kind of candlelight—it just makes the meal feel more special than the everyday. AH&L: No gatekeeping around here! Tell us your best kept spring entertaining tip. ALW: I love to use things in unexpected ways to maximize the space and functionality, so turning the wicker urn into an ice bucket—I will definitely use this idea again. My client and I had been talking about using one of the Mainly Baskets urns as an ice bucket for a while now, so we decided that this was the perfect time to try it out, and it was a hit! I would say just be creative and use what you have. AH&L: Atlanta comes to life when May rolls around. What is your favorite thing about spring in the city? ALW: Atlanta truly does shine in the springtime—the gorgeous weather and seeing everything green and in bloom will make you fall in love with our “city in the trees” all over again. annalouisewolfe.com 19

Despite Midtown’s increasingly crowded residential market, COLONY HOUSE has managed a difficult feat for an older condo complex by remaining desirable among savvy homebuyers. Built in 1972 as one of Colony Square’s residential components, Colony House stands out because of its concrete Brutalist design, the work of Jova/Daniels/ Busby. While its sophisticated style has long attracted the design set—present owners include former executive director of MODA BRENDA GALINA, landscape architect JOHN HOWARD, and designer TIM HOBBY—the mid-rise’s prime location has also ensured its enduring appeal according to William L. Bedgood, listing partner, Team Bedgood,

Midcentury Atlanta, KW Realty Intown Atlanta, and an expert on midcentury real estate. “The city continues to grow around Colony Square. It is possible to live a carless life at Colony House, and more and more buyers moving here from other large cities expect walkability.” Although construction associated with Colony Square’s recent renovation temporarily caused a slight dip in unit values—now that the project is complete, values are rising again—Colony House is benefiting from Colony Square’s reinvigoration, says Bedgood. “The new personal services, retail shops, and dining options in Colony Square have attracted more potential buyers and a more diverse buyer pool into Colony House.”

HIGH MARKS

SCAD ATLANTA continues to enhance its dynamic Midtown campus. Last September, the university unveiled FORTY FIVE, a 14-story tower that could be mistaken for a luxury hotel. Named in honor of SCAD’s founding 45 years ago by school president PAULA WALLACE, FORTY FIVE was designed to cater to all aspects of student life by offering apartment-style dormitories, academic facilities, health and wellness amenities such as a rooftop pool and 22

greenspace, and SCADshow, a state-of-the-art entertainment and performance venue. “We know from our internal research that students who live on campus attend more classes, earn higher grades, and are more likely to graduate on time, making FORTY FIVE a foundational asset in SCAD student success,” says Wallace. “We made FORTY FIVE a building you never want to leave.” Also set to make a splash is the spring debut of SCADSTORY, a 4D experience that Wallace anticipates will become an Atlanta attraction. “Imagine stepping inside a Disneyesque immersive animation that invites guests into the very heart of SCAD. How did SCAD come to be? Who built this wonderland? SCADstory answers every question in a way that only SCAD could create, employing visual effects and the latest storytelling tech—the very same thoughtful design we teach.”

The former H.M. Patterson & Son Spring Hill mortuary, now known as The Patterson, will soon be reimagined as a morning-to-night dining destination. Located within Portman’s new Spring Quarter mixed-use development, the restaurant will be developed by Steve Palmer, founder of Charleston-based The Indigo Road Hospitality Group.

LATE LAST YEAR, Peach Fuzz was named Pantone Color of the Year 2024. I don’t find the peachy shade to be particularly awful, but neither do I love it. For me, it brings back not-so-fond memories of the 1980s, when peach was a popular color choice for clothing and interiors, often accompanied by wimpy pastel shades. I even recall rooms where peach was partnered with jewel tones like emerald green or, worse, amethyst. I shudder at the thought. What I would like to know is, why aren’t we promoting truly timeless colors instead of trendy shades that can be difficult to decorate with? One classic color that has been on my mind a lot lately is chocolate brown. I love a rich brown room, especially at night and particularly if the walls are lacquered, but it’s been ages since I’ve seen one. That’s one color that is in definite need of a resurrection, if for no other reason than to give us yet another opportunity to look for guidance from Billy Baldwin’s oh-so-fabulous chocolate brown apartment. Navy is another color deserving of a comeback, although I’m well aware that some people feel about navy the way I do about Peach Fuzz. I’m finding myself increasingly drawn to navycolored clothing during the cold weather months, and I’m even starting to consider navy blue upholstery for my home. The trick to designing with navy is choosing the right finish. Flat navy walls can sometimes, well, fall flat, but glazed navy walls that reflect light can be divine. And what about yellow? Yellow rooms can be so warm, inviting, and almost always in good taste. Remember how fabulous Mario Buatta’s former living room was with its glazed yellow walls, blue and white porcelain, and floral chintz curtains? In fact, yellow looks terrific with any number of other colors, like raspberry, black, and aubergine. Of course, color preferences are subjective, but after years of blues and millennial pink hogging all the attention, maybe it’s time to start revisiting once-popular classic shades. Just perhaps not peach. 25

Atlanta restaurateur Miguel Ayoub opens elevated dining concept R & C KITCHEN in East Cobb Written by EVAN EDWARDS Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

MIGUEL AYOUB, THE BRAINS behind Atlanta’s beloved Mojave Restaurant, had always dreamed of opening a new dining concept that fuses luxury and camaraderie. Ayoub made his dream a reality when he introduced R & C Kitchen to the Metro Area’s bustling food scene last fall. “While dining in the restaurant and bar area, we want guests to have a luxurious experience in a warm and comfortable environment,” says Ayoub. “Our menu incorporates the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients from local vendors and

farmers. We take pride in what we craft and serve—from the cocktails to the food.” Executive chef Daniel Lee helped Ayoub and his wife, Rachel, curate an exclusive menu inspired by American cuisine with a European flair. From seafood-centric appetizers to delectable entrees and à la carte protein options (the Dry Aged Tomahawk 32-ounce steak being a fan favorite), guests are guaranteed to leave R & C Kitchen longing to return. To drink, opt for one of the restaurant’s sprightly beverages including the Abbey Road cocktail

FRIDAY: 1 -5pm, SATURDAY & SUNDAY: 10am-5pm The stately intown neighborhood of Druid Hills, designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted in the early 1900’s, was almost erased by the construction of a highway. Instead, the community fought fiercely to preserve and protect it. One of the longest-running home tours in Atlanta, the Historic Druid Hills Home & Garden Tour has showcased many outstanding homes and landscapes. This year’s Tour features 10 remarkable examples of true Druid Hills stewardship, through clever adaptive reuse of original estate homes, meticulous restoration, and thoughtful realization of our neighborhood’s historic preservation guidelines in new construction. W WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY presented itself to purchase a home in their dream neighborhood—a quiet, family-friendly enclave in Buckhead—a young family of four jumped at the chance. Though they were in love with the home’s location, the residence, a 1960s ranch home, called for a few improvements to better suit the family’s personalities and busy lifestyle. Fortunately, this presented the couple with another opportunity. Having been longtime admirers of his work, they enlisted esteemed Atlanta architect Norman Askins to give their home a new life. They also tapped the interior design talents of Mandy Lowry and Holly Bradford, the duo behind Bradford Lowry Interiors. “They wanted to upgrade the look of the house because it was very horizontal and very low,” explains Askins, who added height by raising the roofline and opening up the foyer, which also flooded the home with natural light. On the exterior, Askins created a proper portico, rearranged and resized columns, and added dormer windows and faux chimneys to create classic symmetry.

Inside, Askins added character with charming architectural elements, including arches in the entry hall, a new stair railing, round windows, and arched niches in the family room. To accentuate Askins’ work, Lowry and Bradford layered shades of blue, coral, blush, and green throughout, opting for richer and deeper shades in the home’s more central spaces. “We knew we needed to highlight the beautiful, now-light foyer and that what we needed beyond that foyer was depth of color,” explains Lowry. “The wife said, ‘Please take me out of my comfort zone of blue and white.’ And the husband said, ‘Please bring us color, depth, and texture.’” 41

Quality Time above The design team transformed what was originally a sitting room into a family-friendly breakfast room. A dining table from the clients’ own collection anchors the space, along with dining chairs from Mainly Baskets. Botanical artwork by Lulie Wallace set the tone for the room’s color scheme. right The breakfast room opens to the kitchen, living room, and family room, making it a central space where the family can gather for cozy meals in front of the fireplace.

“It had to be super functional and beautiful, but it also had to withstand being loved and worn by the family,” adds Bradford. This is particularly evident in spaces such as the family room, where the design team added a bar area and game nook. Askins also suggested transforming a sitting room into a more functional breakfast room, which now serves as a family-friendly gathering space. Likewise, a color-filled lounge upstairs serves as

42

another landing spot for the family to spend time together. The addition of a dormer adds light and height, making it more functional and visually appealing. And the collaboration paid off. “Mandy and Holly were absolutely amazing; we worked with them closely and were on the same page throughout the project,” says Askins. “The house lives even better than it did before.” See Resources, Back of Book.

“SHE BELIEVES THAT red is a neutral,” says designer Lauren Lowe of her client’s daring color philosophy for a 1908 craftsman in Atlanta’s beloved Inman Park. Lowe, founder of Lauren Elaine Interiors, was tapped by the client and her husband to reinvigorate the abode (whose original iteration was first published in Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles in 2005), with a result that is as vibrant and gracious as the storied neighborhood itself. “I’m an Anglophile who loves books, layers, collections, and oddities, and the homeowners and I align in that respect,” says Lowe. Her clients desired an old

54

English manor aesthetic with contemporary embellishments while respecting the home’s original craftsman style. They had a list of elements in mind, like stripes, florals, and bold color, with other must-haves that would foster everyday comfort and joy, like a cozy sofa in the breakfast room and a dedicated place for the husband to play jazz on their grand piano. Because they had recently relocated to Atlanta with minimal furnishings, they worked with Lowe to procure a pleasing mix of high and low furniture, artwork, and accents—scouring auctions, antiques stores, and online

The designer directed an imagining of each room’s personality and outfitted spaces accordingly. “We decided which rooms should feel fun, which we wanted to feel moody, and which should feel fresh and calm,” she

says. And while color selection was a central focus, it wasn’t overbearing. “I don’t like to get bogged down in whether colors should lead into another room or feel complementary, because if it’s all your style, it will feel congruous,” says Lowe. Since the dining room doesn’t receive much light, the designer opted for a moody appeal, selecting a rich dark blue and adding picture frame molding to the walls.

Eclectic Air

Lowe chose sleek black and white picture frames with white matting to quiet the wall-to-wall gallery effect in the “fun room.” “Having this much art also works to tone down the blue walls and makes the room feel more intimate,” she says.

Overhead, a handblown glass light fixture sourced from Italy was the finishing touch. The home’s 10-foot ceilings allowed Lowe to be playful with color and artwork. In the brilliant blue “fun room,” the homeowners gave Lowe carte blanche. The color serves as a punchy backdrop for gallery walls featuring a mismatched mix of accumulated artwork. “We said, ‘let’s just do something wild in here.’” In the couple’s young daughter’s room upstairs, Lowe again capitalized on the lofty ceilings, painting window trim and the lower half of the walls in Benjamin Moore Swept Away and the top half in Benjamin Moore White Dove, an homage to the Hotel Peter and Paul in New Orleans, which features a similar style. And the terrace off of the lounge serves as the perfect spot to take in the Inman Park Festival Parade. “It’s a real quality-of-life moment.” One of the last rooms the team cracked was the pink living room. “The color gives an airy touch that leans British, and I like the use of pink in a less feminine way,” says Lowe. “It layers well with brown antiques and heavier fabrics like green velvet, which is a really nice juxtaposition. When you’re in the room, it doesn’t feel like we picked an offbeat color. It just feels right.” See Resources, Back of Book. 69

THERE’S A CERTAIN FREEDOM that comes with a traditional floor plan. Unlike open-air interiors, each room can stand alone, forming their own personalities yet still sharing common interests. In this Mediterranean-style Ansley Park property, owners Allison and Ben Hill embraced the formality, working with interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn to give an individual voice to spaces throughout. As avid collectors, the Hills had already acquired much of their furniture over the years, so their main request was to find a way to pull both new and old pieces together for seamless flow. Flynn’s solution: color—and lots of it. “When they bought the house, the walls throughout the main floor were a dusty shade of beige, which argued with all of the bold undertones of the clients’ furniture, rugs, and artwork,” says the designer. “We had to banish the beige.” Flynn embraced the Hill’s collections, uniting spaces with playful, yet sophisticated 73

Nearby, the office serves work-at-home needs and doubles as a mini art gallery. A painting of Preservation Hall in New Orleans, one of the couple’s favorite destinations, hangs on a back wall while smaller works hang on window frames. “Things seem to show up better in small spaces,” says Allison. Another small space that makes a big impression includes the powder bath, with its acid green vanity and botanical French wallpaper. A guest bedroom painted in the same

green brims with chinoiserie drapery and a Palm Beachinspired striped accent wall. “The overall intention of the guest bedroom was to juxtapose feminine and masculine lines equally, and we did that with the patterns, scale, and colors,” says Flynn. “The bold grassy green with the bright hot pink strikes a really great balance.” The bar, featuring a chinoiserie chest, plays well with the exotic tiger-print wallpaper while reinforcing the black and gold notes in the den. “The rooms are like our own little jewel boxes,” says Allison. “Brian listened to what we wanted and took us one step further.” See Resources, Back of Book. 85

ABOUT the Showhouse

THE 2024 SOUTHEASTERN DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE is a 10,250-square-foot residence situated on Putnam Drive in Atlanta’s tony Tuxedo Park neighborhood. Imbued with modern interpretations of classic styles, the home is brought to life by builder and developer BENECKI HOMES and BENECKI / COLE, architect AMANDA ORR ARCHITECTS, landscape architect LAND PLUS ASSOCIATES, and interior specification design team SOURCE. A traditional, cleaned-lined exterior and classic silhouette allow the three-story home to blend seamlessly with its neighboring residences—which range from historic Philip Trammell Shutze creations to forward-thinking new constructions. Twin gables add classic charm, while transitional exterior details include a cedar shake roof, painted brick exterior, steel windows, and sculpted steel doors. Inside, minimal trim, Venetian plaster walls, unique fireplaces, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and integrated lighting create a timeless yet current feel. Meanwhile, rounded details—including bullnosecased openings, curved walls, and fluted detailing on the dramatic three-level staircase—add softness throughout. A carefully curated mix of materials blends traditional and modern elements for a harmonious balance. Bleached walnut cabinetry, white oak flooring, brass details, field-cut mosaic tile, 10

and Turkish and Italian marble create a fresh yet warm envelope, as do shades of green. Showstopping moments include a vibrant, all-pink powder room, a cantilevered fireplace, and a dramatic staircase. Though incredibly spacious, this six-bedroom home—which also includes six baths and three half-baths—feels livable thanks to a traditional layout designed to suit both family life and entertaining. A party-ready dining room greets guests, while a wood-paneled study serves as a cozy retreat. Expansive steel windows in the light-filled family room and kitchen offer views of the forested rear lawn, which also features an oval pool. Located just off the family room, the primary suite stretches the entire depth of the home and takes advantage of backyard views. Graciously proportioned bedrooms, en suite baths, a laundry, and a lounge are located on the second floor. On the terrace level, a recreation room opens onto the backyard, while a bar area, covered porch, and pool table room provide plenty of space for hosting guests. A guest bedroom is equipped with a full bath, steam shower, and sauna. This annual showhouse continues Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ tradition of showcasing the Southeast’s best design talents, as well as the industry’s latest trends and leading brands. —Claire Ruhlin

LETTER

WELCOME

from the Co-Chairs

IT IS A PROFOUND honor and career highlight for us to serve as honorary co-chairs of the 2024 Southeastern Designer Showhouse. Seventeen years ago we founded Mark Williams Design, and we are deeply grateful to Clinton Smith, the editor-in-chief of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles at that time, for extending us the opportunity to participate in the Home for the Holidays Showhouse, which served as an ideal platform to introduce our firm to the local community. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of designing spaces in seven of AH&L’s showhouses, and we remain appreciative of Clint and the entire team at the magazine for our longstanding collaboration. With great pleasure, we announce that Mark Williams Design has evolved into Williams Papadopoulos Design. There is no more fitting occasion to unveil our new firm name than through participation in another showhouse with AH&L, and assuming the honorary co-chair’s role for this event is particularly meaningful to us. While our name has changed to reflect the strength of our partnership, our core values and commitment to excellence in design remain unwavering. This transition represents not merely a change, but the continuation and progression of a partnership cultivated over the past two decades, as we eagerly anticipate the future. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Atlanta’s talented, supportive, and generous design community, which sets a standard for excellence envied by other regions. We are thankful for each of the designers participating in the showhouse, who collectively represent a diverse array of talents—some familiar faces, others new—but all exemplify the finest qualities of the Southeastern design landscape.

LITTLE EXCITES US MORE than Atlanta’s cheerful awakening when the spring season rolls around each year, and we’re ready to celebrate with Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ annual Southeastern Designer Showhouse! Our 2024 Southeastern Designer Showhouse, presented by Benecki Homes, is a collaboration between a designbuild dream team: builder Benecki / Cole; architect Amanda Orr Architects; landscape architect Land Plus Associates; and interior specifications designer SOURCE. We’re also welcoming the new season by highlighting some of the Southeast’s top design talents. As you walk through the home, you’ll tour the work of design firms from Atlanta, Alabama, North Carolina, and beyond. We are delighted to announce this year’s Honorary Chairs, Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos of Williams Papadopoulos Design, who have designed the family room and kitchen, and are thrilled to welcome back Camp Twin Lakes as this year’s beneficiary. We are honored to work with an organization dedicated to helping our young community as well as their families. Cheers and welcome!

ABOUT the Beneficiary CAMP TWIN LAKES

To learn more, please visit CampTwinLakes.org

FOR 30 YEARS, CAMP TWIN LAKES (Camp) has provided therapeutic camping programs for children and families living with serious illnesses, disabilities and life challenges. Camp positively impacts 10,000 campers annually through year-round programs at two campuses in Winder and Rutledge, GA. Our campuses are full, and thanks to the generosity of our community, construction is underway on a new campus to serve an additional 3,500 campers each year. At our fully accessible campuses, our campers can safely participate in typical camp programs like fishing, swimming, rock wall climbing, horseback riding and drumming while under the supervision of medical staff and specially trained camping professionals. Camp’s intentional programming provides opportunities for each camper to grow in their confidence and experience the joys of childhood. As they make memories with their peers, the isolation they often feel vanishes in the comfort of new friendships forged by the strongest of bonds: the challenges they have in common. During their time at Camp, our campers learn new skills to manage their unique challenges more independently. In a supportive environment, campers become a contributing member of a rich community, bonded by the fun they share at Camp as well as the challenges they face at home. Each year, campers are delighted to reunite with their Camp Family, where they receive support, understanding and unconditional love.

Camp is for everyone. Help us provide life-changing camp experiences for kids.

Our three-campus system has grown to serve nearly 13,500 individuals living with serious illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges annually. As we prepare to welcome a new generation of campers this summer, we’re committed to providing a scholarship for each camper, so that no child is turned away due to a lack of financial resources. Our adaptive and medically supportive campuses provide a safe space to learn skills that cultivate confidence, resilience, and relationships for a lifetime.

Devin Taylor

Devin Taylor Designs was established with a passion and appreciation for elegance and the idea that luxury and simplicity not only can only co-exist, but also truly complement each other. Since our firm’s first projects as an interior design business, this has remained a core vision. Today, our services include design for renovations, new builds, and interior design projects. We specialize in creating architectural details through floor plans and renderings, keeping in mind that as living and working spaces evolve, the space must still feel consistent and flow well. Our goal is to maximize the potential of your home and lifestyle by creating a space that is distinctly yours while also standing the test of time in a fast-changing, ever-evolving world.

Kristin Kong

K Kong Designs, founded in 2011 by Kristin Kong, is an Atlanta-based, full-service interior design firm for whole homes, specialty commercial projects, and boutique hospitality environments. Kristin believes that design should tell a story and that every engaging story should include an element of the unexpected. Using bold colors, exaggerated silhouettes, and statement accessories, she creates design solutions that are daring but never trendy. The team pairs a strong point of view with a collaborative approach, using each new project as an opportunity to inspire and reinvent themselves, their work, and to create a design aesthetic that reflects the authentic spirit of each client.

MEET THE DESIGNERS

Primary Bathroom, Formal Powder Room & Sauna SOURCE founders, Brittany Stafford and Cydney Mitchell, started off with a simple idea – to create a groundbreaking and streamlined approach to design with more emphasis on intentional material selections and execution. Ultimately, their goal was to create a company that could support the design industry throughout the entire design and purchasing process from conception to completion – a company that could help establish the soul of a space evoking a sense of belonging. Thus, SOURCE was born.

SOURCE

In 2017, after their idea was solidified, a team of seasoned designers was assembled to spearhead the creation of SOURCE; to curate and supply a bespoke collection of artisanal materials sourced from across the globe—a collection driven by design philosophy rather than mere product selection, while still diverse and cost-effective. With no plans of slowing down, SOURCE has remained steadfast in its commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation while embracing the boundless creative potential of its unique concept.

Bedroom & Bathroom 3, Loft Matthew H. Welden, a native Atlantan, knows the story is not over until it’s a good one. Graduating from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee with a double major in english and economics, Welden has long walked the fine line between the emotion of creativity and the analytical mind of problem solving. An initial career in finance and equity trading sharpened his ability to read the room and stay, if ever so slightly, ahead of the next move. With an increasing desire to express his creative side, Welden made a move to Summerour and Associates, Architects as the chief operating officer before ultimately joining forces with Justin Van Breda as the president of Justin Van Breda London.

Matthew Welden

This next chapter brings us all here to The House at 396 Interiors. The ultimate expression of creativity and problem solving allows clients to benefit from the entire range of offerings from custom furniture, rugs, and fabric to fully bespoke interiors. On the odd occasion that Welden is not at work, he loves entertaining with his family in their home, “Club 396.” And this, my friends, is just the beginning of the story…

At Virginia Cheek Designs, our process is pretty straightforward—we listen to our clients and help them develop a plan; we then work together to execute that plan. We aim to to create intentional, timeless interiors for our clients, whatever their personal style. While we have an affinity for raw materials and natural elements, our work is very project-dependent. We welcome the challenge of bringing each client’s unique tastes and personality to life by creating interiors that are both authentic and deeply personal. Virginia currently resides in Atlanta with her husband and three children.
