DESIGNER THERESA ORY and her family moved into their home four years ago, but it wasn’t until the world came to a halt in March 2020 that she gave thought to transforming this personal space. “All of a sudden there were no more job site visits or showroom appointments. Work became really quiet, but that in turn allowed me the time to dream about the possibilities of my own home,” says Ory. As an avid cook and host, the kitchen’s existing layout often left her feeling stifled. So once renovations commenced later that year, the first order of business was to remove a divisional wall and awkward peninsula, instantly improving flow, a hallmark of Ory’s design principles. “Good flow is critical,” says the designer. “It’s like the backstage crew of design. It’s not the thing you see or understand while you’re experiencing it, but you can feel it.” The layout now features a large island and an adjacent lounge area that Ory playfully dubs the “coffee and conversation corner.” Notably absent is a table. “I’ve always had a dream to have a house with a giant island and no table at all,” says Ory. “You can try to create this formal space but mostly people are going to end up loitering around an island, so for me, following that natural pattern and building it to suit where comfort naturally leans toward allows for you to fully enjoy the space.” The island is also the best spot to enjoy the sculptural beauty of the range wall, featuring an oversize bell-curve hood made of plaster; its graceful lines continuing with a light green quartzite backsplash. And Ory’s decision to forgo upper cabinets here allows the wall “to have its moment without any distractions,” she says. “Ultimately, I wanted the kitchen to be a warm and hospitable backdrop for shared moments, while also having my creative voice.”

BUILDING A HOUSE FROM SCRATCH afforded the homeowners of this Atlanta dwelling carte blanche in creating spaces tailored specifically for their family of four. At the helm of bringing their ideas to life was designer Lauren DeLoach and design and build firm South Haven Builders. “Two of the things that were really important to them were the proportions of the kitchen as well as its placement within the home’s layout,” says DeLoach. “They love to entertain and both of these things played into that.” The kitchen’s generous dimensions allowed for two islands, which ticked many boxes for the homeowners. During large gatherings they facilitate a flow in traffic pattern and offer additional seating for guests. On a daily basis, the dual islands offer the husband plenty of space to cook and test out new recipes. 26

Having the kitchen adjacent to the home’s outdoor spaces was also high on the wish list. Pocket doors from the kitchen now lead onto a fully equipped covered porch (and pool just beyond) to provide a seamless transition from indoors to out. The home’s leafy surroundings inspired its clean and natural aesthetic that DeLoach accomplished through a careful balance of contemporary lines with soft, warm finishes. Rift sawn white oak cabinetry, marble surfaces and a plaster hood establish a restrained color palette that’s dappled with sunlight streaming in through
large steel windows, which effectively provided another connection to the outdoors. However, to break up the monotony of the clean lines and harder surfaces, DeLoach selected an antique draper’s table that was sealed and put on casters for the second island. “I love adding in pieces that have history and patina. It’s always very successful in creating personality,” she says. “Antiques all have a story to tell, and now this table is primed for many more over the years as the family and guests gather round.”

A PAIR OF EMPTY NESTERS making the move from a suburban farm to Ansley Park enlisted a team of Atlanta talents to transform their newly purchased 1912 manse into a fresher, brighter home. Having the ability to host large gatherings was a priority for the couple, thus placing a spotlight on the kitchen. First up, architect Linda MacArthur finessed the layout, knocking down walls and doors to open up the compartmentalized spaces. Now, a floating range wall serves as the only partition between the kitchen and scullery. This unique feature serves as the centerpiece of the kitchen, its sculptural charm—along with a La Cornue range—captures the European aesthetic that the couple was seeking, says designer Jane Hollman of Studio Entourage. “Since they came from a farm, there was also a tremendous amount of work put into creating a connection to the outdoors,” she adds. Large steel windows overlooking the lush courtyard help establish this, as do textural elements like the rift white oak cabinetry designed by Marcel Olariu of Kingdom Woodworks. Olariu incorporated luxurious touches, from a hidden television cabinet to dish pegs to light-up drawers, and placed a special emphasis on using pocket doors to hide smaller appliances such as a toaster, microwave and coffee machine. “These things normally sit plugged in on the counter, but can be an eyesore. We had so much of this beautiful marble in here that it didn’t deserve to be covered by clutter, so we created storage solutions to combat this,” explains Olariu. This also allows for the dual counter vignettes flanking the kitchen entryway to function as bars when hosting. Instead of traditional cabinet doors here, Olariu suggested steel window doors to match the kitchen’s airy and earthy aesthetic. “It’s not a fussy or complicated kitchen,” he says. “All the natural elements speak for themselves.”

WHEN A COUPLE MADE THE MOVE from a single-family home to a penthouse in the heart of Atlanta, they also traded in a traditional design aesthetic for clean and contemporary. And they brought their go-to designer Robin Burnett along for the ride. “My clients wanted to transition to an easier lifestyle, and part of that included shifting to a streamlined style,” says Burnett. Sleek contrasting cabinetry—wood veneer and white lacquer—by famed Italian brand Pedini lays the foundation for the penthouse’s kitchen. Quartz stone for both the backsplash and counters was an easy decision, as marble in the clients’ former home proved hard to maintain. And in lieu of conventional hardware, a combination of finger grooves and push touch latches further the couple’s goal to “create a space without visible extras,” notes Burnett. While the kitchen takes on a minimalistic approach, it does not lack in functionality. Luxe appointments from a Gaggenau steam oven to an induction cooktop as well as multiple refrigeration
systems and dishwashers make both cooking and hosting easy and enjoyable experiences. A custom wine wall inspired by one at The Breakers Palm Beach showcases more than 600 bottles and allows the couple to share with guests their passion for wine collected during their travels both abroad and stateside. When the couple is not entertaining, however, an adjacent morning kitchen serves as the daily workhorse. Housed behind smoky glass doors, the morning kitchen features a sink, coffee maker, toaster, fridge, microwave and dishwasher, plus a stainless steel pullout for additional prep space. “They didn’t want all the smaller day-to-day appliances to be in the main kitchen,” says Burnett. “It’s a more personal space where they can make a cup of coffee before going to work or pour a glass of wine at night.” No matter the time of day though, panoramic city views are the penthouse’s crowning jewel. “That’s essentially what guided us,” says Burnett. “Aesthetically, it all needed to be a quiet support for what was happening outside.” 41

Held at Phipps Plaza last October, the design was inspired by a mix of midcentury modern and organic contemporary design styles that are in high demand with today’s homeowners. “The sleek matte perimeter cabinetry gently fades into the background leaving the island, with its texture and natural elements, to shine and draw you in,” says Hazellief. But don’t let the striking design fool you—the kitchen is as hardworking as it is eye-pleasing. With functionality top of mind, the island features built-in utensil dividers, knife blocks and paneled appliances such as an ice maker, dishwasher and refrigerator drawers. The range wall cabinetry features finger pulls to provide easy access to everyday storage when hands are full, while high-tech appliances—such as double ovens featuring push-open doors and an integrated wine fridge with custom panels to match the cabinetry—keep the kitchen future-forward. Despite its drama, the kitchen, with its chic style and functional elements, is made to be livable, says Hazellief. “The thought for visitors to embrace was that contemporary spaces can house warmth and comfort while still maintaining simplistic roots. We wanted them to think, ‘Even though my style may not be considered contemporary, I can still see myself in this kitchen.’” 53

New condo properties continue to bring luxe living, exclusive amenities and upscale shopping and dining to residents. Here’s the latest on two projects. GRAYDON, a 22-floor property by Kolter, is expected to be ready for move-ins during the first quarter 2022, says HEATHER PITTS with ANSLEY ATLANTA REAL ESTATE (ansleyre.com). The condo, which has 45 units and resort-style amenities, was 70% presold in November 2021. Available units, as of November, included a $3.599 million three-bedroom with 3,600 interior square feet and three terraces with nearly 700 square feet. Two-bedroomplus-den units range from $1.6 million to $2.3 million, and from 2,170 interior square feet to 2,557 square feet with one to three terraces. Interiors are by Susan B. Bozeman Designs. CORSO ATLANTA’s first residents were expected to move in during December, where Sugarcoat Beauty and a floral shop from Terry Furuta Designs will join Lucy’s Market in the gated senior living community. “We are really trying to bring the things that they enjoy in Buckhead to them,” says KARI SAMUELSON, GALERIE LIVING chief operating officer and president. About 40% of the 204 units—city homes, independent living, assisted living and memory care—were leased, as of November. GREG PIRKLE, general manager, says the concierge services, entertainment and wellness venues and private dining spaces will offer a five-star experience so residents can maintain a high-end lifestyle as they downsize.

Appliance choices now are made first in the kitchen design timeline, which is opposite from past timelines, in order to get in line with manufacturers. “It’s 100% different,” says TISH MILLS KIRK of TISH MILLS INTERIORS. It takes at least twice as long for appliances to arrive, designers say, and conversations with clients about appliances and features they desire happen much earlier. “It does make them really consider the brands they want at the beginning of the kitchen project,” says KAREN FERGUSON, principal of interiors at HARRISON DESIGN. Mills Kirk says she’s seeing waits of up to 10 months. “We just plan accordingly because appliances are important. It’s not what you want to compromise on,” she says. Orders for plumbing fixtures, lighting and cabinetry follow soon after appliances. Limited finishes for fixtures or wood types are being produced at a time, which exacerbates delays. Budgets are escalating as well. Shipping costs have increased by 40% in some cases, says Ferguson. Mills Kirk says appliances have multiple price increases throughout the year, compared to typically first of the year, which is “another good reason to order as early as possible,” she says. 60

Naomi Von Habersham WHEN I’M TOURING 20th-century house museums, some of my favorite rooms to peruse are kitchens and bathrooms. What strikes me is that no matter how fancy the rest of the house may be, the kitchen is almost always fairly basic, which makes sense considering that many decades ago wealthy homeowners rarely ventured into their kitchens to prepare meals for themselves. But despite their sometimes primitive appearances, these yesteryear kitchens still offer design inspiration. You just have to keep an open mind. Take the nearly century-old kitchen at the Atlanta History Center’s Swan House, for example. Painted a still-on-trend shade of vibrant blue, the room’s walls and cabinetry look smashing, especially against the dark gray linoleum floor below. But the star of the kitchen, at least to me, is the 1930sera Magic Chef range, which I practically swooned over the first time I saw it. I have no idea if the thing still works, but its enamel and chrome design looks like something from the set of a high-style MGM movie from the 1930s. Another memorable kitchen is that at Hillwood Estate in Washington, D.C. Home to Marjorie Merriweather Post, Hillwood was the site of many glamorous parties back in the mid 20th century, which explains why the spacious kitchen and pantry were kitted out like a commercial kitchen. Think stainless steel countertops surrounding a stainless steel island, all standing on a geometrically patterned tile floor. The butler’s pantry is equally fabulous, with green steel cabinetry lining the walls and holding all of Post’s china services. Okay, so the enameled metal cabinetry might be as dated as the nearby dumbwaiter, but a kitchen decked out in sleek stainless steel remains a sight to behold. And, like the Swan House kitchen, Hillwood still retains its Magic Chef range, although its model has nine burners! Thankfully, 21stcentury kitchen design has come a long way since then, with modern kitchens boasting a range of styles and finishes that were once unimaginable. But even now, decades after they were furnished, those old kitchens have a retro-chic flair that continues to inspire many of us today.

POLITAN ROW, Midtown’s newest hot spot, is the latest addition to Atlanta’s list of food halls that have popped up in the last few years. Run by New Orleans-based Politan Group, the 20,000-square-foot upscale food hall is a sight for sore eyes with 1970s-inspired design choices that suavely dress the hall. Midcentury modern furniture—varying from formal table seating to more casual seating arrangements—accommodates more than 350 guests between indoors and the patio, which are connected by a 24-foot sliding glass wall. Indeed, the destination isn’t the average food hall and operates closely to a dine-in restaurant. Guest assistants act similarly to waiters by servicing diners’ requests (extra silverware, glasses of water, etc.) and clearing tables when meals are finished. Don’t expect meals to be delivered in typical to-go boxes. Each stall plates menu items on matching china and pours drinks in suitable glassware. And with room for 11 food stalls, meal options range from pizzas topped with traditional Indian ingredients to Moroccan fare to the juiciest grass-fed burgers, birria tacos paired with ramen, and more. Politan Group intentionally chose concepts from young, local entrepreneurs who are pushing the envelope of Midtown’s culinary scene. Complementing the eclectic mix of cuisine, Bar Politan offers classic cocktails, mostly local beers and a variety of wines. For those craving an experience, the food hall’s offerings extend past the food stalls and Bar Politan. A chef’s table allows guests to indulge in tastes from various concepts, while Jojo’s Beloved Cocktail Lounge, the speakeasy hidden somewhere within, is a flashback to 1970s disco glam. With lush greenery as the scenic backdrop for the Serenbe showhouse’s two-level patio, designers Patrick and Meghan Sharp, in partnership with Universal Furniture, selected a chic black and white palette that’s also congruent with the living and dining areas that open onto it. “We didn’t want to combat nature with a strong color point of view,” says Patrick. Just outside the dining room, a quartet of white upholstered chairs surrounds a cane coffee table, creating a convivial spot for drinks and after-dinner rendezvous. Located steps away and defined by sculptural topiaries, curvaceous woven chairs juxtapose the crisp white tablecloth, which is decorated with a mix of refined and organic elements, such as woven place mats and bamboo cutlery. NATURAL HIGH DESIGN-BUILD
SERENBE PLANNING + DESIGN, SOUTH HAVEN BUILDERS, FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN Moved by the forested surrounding and natural topography, architect Steve Dray designed a decidedly modern home clad with dark stucco and cedar treated with a durable, sustainable finish known as shou sugi ban. “The house is not overbearing, and I think it relates to everybody’s sensibilities, whether you like traditional or modern,” he says. Nearly every space in the multilevel abode, which was built by South Haven Builders, offers treetop views, and many have a direct connection with the landscape, for example, the covered multilevel terrace outside the living and dining areas. While protected from the elements, “It feels like you’re outside and not sheltered too much,” says Dray, pointing to its nearly 15-foot ceiling. STATE OF THE ART ENTRY & GREAT ROOM JEFFREY BRUCE BAKER DESIGNS
Faced with a lack of walls for the spacious, light-filled open living room, interior designer Jeffrey Bruce Baker decided against a traditional layout, instead creating a sort of sculpture garden filled with head-turning furnishings and vibrant artwork. “It’s like creating a painting,” he says. Resembling mosaics created from flower petals, oil paintings by Guy Robinson cover two walls in the front entrance, referencing the lush exterior in a whimsical way. SINGULAR EXPRESSION
KITCHEN, SCULLERY, BREAKFAST ROOM, STAIR HALL & POWDER ROOM INTUITIVE DWELLINGS A reflection of the home’s modern architecture, the open kitchen, breakfast room, scullery and light-filled stair hall by Lorraine Enwright feature a dynamic interplay between form and materiality. “We used finishes in a way that highlights the three-dimensional geometric composition,” says Enwright, who was also the lead specifications designer for the showhouse. In perfect dialogue with the sculptural floating stairs, the kitchen is outfitted with quarter-sawn oak cabinetry that frames a veiny marble backsplash with inlaid brass detailing. The rich material palette characterizes both the black scullery and the kitchen’s island, which is composed of steel, wood and a cantilevered stone top illuminated by wavy handblown glass pendants suspended from varying heights. “They accentuate that asymmetry and playfulness,” explains Enwright. Brass barstools with quilted turquoise velvet seats reference the abstract paintings in the stair hall and breakfast area, where the oak flooring runs up the corner walls—an intimate backdrop for a marble-topped oval table and chairs. “All the forms come together to create an experience that speaks to people’s hearts,” says Enwright. “It’s been tremendous to see people’s reactions.”

A tactile grasscloth wallcovering with an onyx backdrop creates an enveloping feeling in an upper-level guest bedroom with nearly floor-to-ceiling corner windows that frame verdant treetop views. “Texture makes it feel very warm and really elevates the design,” says designer Kit Castaldo. Rust-colored draperies inspired by the showhouse’s fall debut energize the space, which is furnished with a gray velvet headboard and a shapely bronze side table atop a sumptuous alpaca shag rug. Artwork adds to the narrative. FULL BLOOM PRIMARY BATHROOM & COVERED TERRACE BALANCE DESIGN A fine art photograph of a bright pink peony pops against the porcelain slab-covered wall over the deep soaker tub in the primary bath, which features a large window that frames a breathtaking view of the lush exterior with direct access to a covered terrace. “We pulled the outside in and vice versa, so there’s a seamless flow between the spaces,” says designer Jennifer Carter, who collaborated with Stephanie Andrews on the design. Imagining clients who were sophisticated world travelers, Beth Kooby created a soothing primary bedroom suite filled with art and souvenirs. The accent pillows’ colorful floral fabric, for example, was inspired by the annual cherry blossom festivals in Japan—a subtle nod to the shou sugi ban treatment used on the home’s exterior. And paying homage to traditional Japanese paper lanterns, a large spherical linen pendant makes a statement while illuminating the sparkly mica-flecked wallcovering on the ceiling. “I wanted it to feel like you were sleeping under the stars,” she says. And the wool and silk sheer draperies carry on her dream-like allure. Inspired by the seasonal foliage just outside, Susan Currie conjured up a spirited design for her second-floor bedroom suite. The custom duvet features colorful appliqué velvet circles that “references fall colors in a vibrant way,” says Currie. The circles are echoed in a pair of custom-designed mirrors that flank the linear wood and brass four-poster bed, establishing a pleasing rhythm of shapes that define the space. Meanwhile, a wool and banana silk rug with a cut pile pattern and lacquered vellum side tables introduce variations in texture. The mix “creates a harmonious, interesting room,” explains Currie. Indeed, textural window coverings juxtapose the bedroom’s deep sage green walls while framing picturesque views of the lush foliage just outside. Adding to the cozy nestlike milieu, a wingback headboard upholstered in a delightful floral print enlivens the white linen bedding, which is punctuated by a rust accent pillow—a nod to autumn. BRIGHT IDEA MUDROOM RED DOOR DESIGN STUDIO While some might see the lower-level hallway and mudroom as simply utilitarian spaces, Abbi Williams felt they should have the same sense of panache one might find in a front foyer. “It’s that welcoming moment,” she says, “something a little more precious for the homeowners.” Playing off the subtle blue tones throughout the house, bold turquoise walls create a dynamic backdrop for the oak flooring and contemporary gray mudroom cabinetry. “When there’s no natural light, you have to create your own energy,” she explains. At the bottom of the stairs, low nubby woolcovered stools with walnut stretchers surround a round table with a steel base and a walnut top. “I wanted to round the corner off, soften some of the hard edges,” she says. A burled bleached walnut mirror adds a subtle visual texture, while walnut hooks in the mudroom likewise add interest, playing off the flat-front gray cabinetry and brass hardware. “The design evolves and grows in a cohesive way,” she says. “I love the finished product.”

HIGH CONTRAST LOFT MISTER + MRS SHARP To create an inviting space in what is essentially a thoroughfare, designers Patrick and Meghan Sharp covered the upstairs loft’s walls in a black-and-white wallcovering with a geometric pattern accented by a single dark stripe across the wall and ceiling. “It’s high impact,” says Patrick. The same pattern adorns throw pillows in a newly added window bench flanked by built-in bookcases, creating a cozy spot to curl up with a novel. Steps away, a pair of mismatched stools—one stone, the other ceramic—easily pulls up to a round table with a metal half-circle base and a walnut top. “All the geometric shapes are working together,” he says, pointing to the metallic disc-shaped wall sconces. UNDERGROUND CLUB LOWER LEVEL LOUNGE ARCHIE BOLDEN With no client direction per se, Tara Dennis designed the lower lounge and powder room to suit her personal style, painting the walls and ceiling in a dark hue that’s “dark, moody, intimate and very sexy,” she says. “It’s like going into the depths of the home.” Underneath the room’s only two clerestory windows, a vintage serpentine sofa recovered in a deep olive green velvet and an enveloping accent chair create a convivial seating area atop a black area rug. “The curves bring a lot of softness to the space,” she explains. Steps away, a dark handwoven rug defines a black-stained wooden bar table and metal stools with plush teal velvet seats. RUSTIC TOUCH
LIVING ROOM CHRISTY DILLARD KRATZER, CDK INTERIOR DESIGN At first glance, the living room’s woodpaneled walls might imply the kind of traditional mountain decor that sometimes goes with it, but the stylish mix of furnishings seen here quickly dispels that notion. Unique for this house, designer Christy Dillard Kratzer opted for a deep brown wall color, Sherwin-Williams Black Fox, a cozy choice which also gives the modestly sized space an even greater sense of intimacy. At the same time, the room’s high ceiling, numerous windows and open floor plan create “a wonderful lofty feeling,” says Dillard Kratzer. Because the living room is open to the adjacent kitchen, the designer connected both spaces, and the outdoors as well, by working with an earthy color palette accented with green. Texture, most notably in the form of a pair of wood and metal armchairs covered in hair on hide and a woven coffee table, brings added warmth to a space already swathed in it, courtesy of the inviting stone fireplace. Reminiscent of a traditional farmhouse or a European cottage kitchen, the heart of this home is appointed in an array of old-world finishes that have been modernized for today’s tastes and lifestyles. Open shelving alludes to the past, as do the wide-plank European oak flooring and tongue-and-groove paneling. For contrast to the Shaker-style cabinetry, painted a fresh shade of jade green, designer Christy Dillard Kratzer introduced contemporary-looking dark countertops and a dark gray farmhouse sink. One of the room’s most unique design elements is the backsplash behind the range—inspired by a star-pattern quilt, the designer replicated the motif using black, gray and white cement tiles. “The pattern is a nod to a country appeal, while also feeling modern because of the color combination.” The kitchen may be small, but don’t let its size fool you. COVERED PORCH EVAN MILLARD, LAUREN MOORE & BETSY TRABUE, MODERN REMAINS A space to enjoy the clean country air while—thanks to a dramatically soaring ceiling—still protected from the elements, the covered porch offers indoor comforts in a lush outdoor setting. Wishing to create an inviting atmosphere, “as if the trees and sky beyond are giving you a welcoming hug,” the Modern Remains designers used a classic color combination of blue and white along with touches of green, all of which blend peacefully with the surrounding landscape, especially the babbling brook that runs alongside the house. A variety of blue-and-white fabrics accent the porch, including ticking, a Perennials favorite, which was made into drapery that envelops part of the space when drawn. When it came to choosing furniture, the designers sought out the unique. Custom-designed pieces with modern flair, such as a fluted concrete table, stand alongside vintage pieces, including a brass bar cart. Even the vintage Art Deco lanterns and egret fountains add a surprising touch. PRIMARY BEDROOM HOPE AUSTIN, HOPE AUSTIN INTERIORS It was the home’s natural vistas that inspired Hope Austin to create a primary bedroom that speaks to the area’s rolling hills and mountains while also offering a relaxing retreat at the end of the day. Evocative of the nearby woods, Thibaut’s Lincoln Toile, an arboreal wallpaper in shades of blue and green, is the room’s most prominent decoration, one which Austin considers “the perfect balance of a traditional pattern in an updated color combination.” Neutral-colored bed linens and curtains bestow a sense of tranquility, while a blue mohair headboard, one of Austin’s favorite pieces, serves to ground the space. An added bonus is the adjacent nap nook. Although originally intended as sleeping quarters for children, Austin repurposed it as a dog nook. Sporting a cream-and-brown canine print wallpaper—Thibaut’s Dooley—and a dog bed from Peacock Alley, the nook is an ideal napping spot for pampered pooches. SIMPLISTIC BEAUTY GUEST BEDROOM 1 & BATHROOM ERIN COSSEY, ERIN COSSEY INTERIORS
The first thing one notices upon entering this guest bedroom is a pair of bunk beds, whose coziness looks so inviting that a good night’s sleep is practically guaranteed. But step further into the space and look out the window, and one of the room’s other highlights becomes clearly visible: a breathtaking view of nearby Lookout Mountain. Preferring not to compete with that view, Erin Cossey decided to keep things simple and mostly neutral, which she says “helped to highlight the room’s statement pieces and draw the eye to the beautiful property outside the windows.” Walls, bunk beds and a chest of drawers are soft white, cream or putty, while curtains, lamps and throw pillows introduce green and blue accents into the space. Color-wise, the adjacent guest bathroom is treated in similar fashion, albeit with blue cabinetry and a patterned tile floor punctuating the space. Partnered with an antique wood table, the star of the space is a traditional claw-foot tub. GUEST BEDROOM & UPSTAIRS LANDING KIM WINKLER, KIM WINKLER DESIGNS A transitional space that has the advantage of natural light, the upstairs landing features hand-printed impressions of tree rings, cleverly selected by designer Kim Winkler as a taste of what’s to come in her adjoining guest bedroom. Combining outside beauty with something that feels fun for kids, Winkler infused a playful fairytale storyline into the space. The designer found inspiration from the forest, establishing a cream and green color palette throughout, most notably seen in verdant tree decals of varying heights on the walls. Taking advantage of the vaulted ceiling, the trees are further animated by birds and animals that frolic in the wooded setting. A highlight of the room is an A-frame style bed that resembles a little house, and, one of Winkler’s favorite pieces, the small wood table that was formed from a slice of a tree trunk. Although designed with children in mind, the room could just as easily appeal to adults who are young at heart and have a spirit for wanderlust. Not your run-of-the-mill bathroom, Courtney Shearer’s version is one which dazzles the eyes. Intending for the space to have “a cozy sophistication and evoke a feeling of calm, much like that of a grandparent’s house,” Shearer treated the bathroom’s walls to a luxurious finish: Schumacher’s Madame de Pompadour wallpaper in blush, which gives the impression of an antique hand-painted paper like one found in a grand established house. Another visual reference to the past are the pendant lights, whose brass chains and shapely milk glass globes look vintage, despite being new. Although the wallpaper admittedly steals the show, vibrant teal cabinetry manages to command attention while also complementing the paper’s rosy-pink hues. Contemporary vessel sinks partnered with sleek countertops and hardware round out the curated mix of styles and color that the designer refers to as “an overall elevated, yet cozy aesthetic.”

NATURALLY INSPIRED FOYER ALISON WOMACK JOWERS, WOMACK JOWERS INTERIORS
The foyer’s lack of windows didn’t stop designer Alison Womack Jowers from creating a visual connection with the home’s pastoral setting. Wanting to show visitors that “even a hallway can connect homeowners to where they live,” Womack Jowers enveloped the space in an outdoor-oriented, trellisprint wallpaper, whose shades of white, soft taupe and blue evoke the atmospheric colors found outside while also helping to make the small space seem bigger than it really is. A white plaster pendant light adds additional brightness, while underfoot, a striped rug repeats the wallpaper’s color scheme. Even the artwork was chosen with the home’s location in mind: a contemporary painting depicting a Kentucky Warbler, a songbird found in forested areas of the Southeast. As a space with heavy foot traffic, Womack Jowers made sure to include some hallway necessities, such as an antique English antler coatrack and a midcentury bamboo-style mirror.

SPRING HOUSE & COURTYARD AMANDA HICKAM, HARPER HARRIS DESIGN STUDIO Situated independently of the cottage, the spring house sets itself apart with its bold decor. Conceiving her space as an “edgy but elegant spa,” designer Amanda Hickam made dramatic design decisions, including the ceiling’s eye-catching black-and-white striped wallpaper and the green velvet window valances. “The green is a nod to nature, but with the volume turned up,” she says. At the same time, restful shades of soothing neutrals are also in abundance, seen in the sheer curtains that frame the soaking tub. The connected courtyard is equally striking as well as intimate. Named for a plant that is indigenous to the surrounding Chattanooga Valley, The Mountain Laurel cottage is located in the Cloudland Station community in Chickamauga, Georgia. Boasting views of the valley as well as nearby Lookout Mountain, the 1,620-square-foot cottage, like the rest of the community, “feels like something that could have been here for a while,” says developer and Cloudland Station founder John Tatum. Indeed, the home’s design, especially its board-and-batten siding, pays homage to the area’s historical architectural vernacular—the so-called Carpenter Gothic style— but the surrounding environment was also an influence. “The house was designed to interact with the landscape,” explains architect Coleman Mills, formerly of Harrison Design, who configured the cottage’s tall but compact layout so that its interiors had plenty of outdoor views and easy-to-use space. Likewise, the outdoor areas are thoughtfully arranged, including intimately scaled courtyards and porches as well as the adjacent spring house, a newly-built structure that traditionally would have provided drinking water to the community but that is used today as auxiliary living space.
