FROM THE ARCHIVES Celebrating AH&L’s 40th anniversary year

airplane mode SPRING IS THE SEASON where wanderlust kicks into high gear, and this year, the itch has been particularly strong for me. Lately it feels as though I spend more time traveling by plane than by car, and while I can now pack my suitcase in my sleep, I’ve come to appreciate the “staycation” more than ever, exploring Atlanta as if it’s my first time in the city. Whether that’s morning coffee at Krog Street Market, strolling through Piedmont Park or eating with friends at one of the countless favorable locales around the city, it’s fun to approach Atlanta with a vacation point of view. In our April issue, we lean into this sense of wanderlust with tours of three breezy vacation getaways, from the

mountains, to the lake, to the beach. On Lake Keowee, Barbara Westbrook and Peter Block fashion a welcoming abode for a pair of empty nesters (page 34), whereas in Seagrove, Florida, Liz Williams packs a punch with playful uses of color (page 54). In Highlands, sisterdesigner duo Anne Erbesfield and Cathleen Carrington fill Anne’s home with memory-infused antiques from over 30 years of travel (page 72). Wherever your wanderlust may pull you this season, I hope this issue will inspire you to explore new places, whether it be the next town over or on the other side of the world. Happy traveling! Fresh off a plane from France, Style Editor Clinton Smith asks an array of Atlanta design pros to weigh in on the latest discoveries from the Paris Deco Off design fair—and what you might soon be seeing in a home near you. Ooh la la!

PARIS IS KNOWN AS the City of Light, but in winter, it can be quite cold, damp and pretty dark (it barely eeks out nine hours of daylight that time of year). Besides the majestic Eiffel Tower glimmering in the night sky, one other bright spot of the season is the Paris Deco Off trade show for design professionals who are on the hunt for the newest product offerings from companies in the world of interior design. The most recent event in January— with happenings spanning both the Left and Right Banks—revealed a world of illuminating new finds for the home. We caught up with a number of Atlanta designers who attended Paris Deco Off and asked them about what they found inspiring. “I always discover incredible new lines and products at Paris Deco Off,” says Atlanta designer Susan Bozeman, “and it gives me a chance to also source antiques and one-of-a-kind pieces for clients.” It was, in fact, the first time many had attended the fair since 2020 (preCOVID-19), so being able to be inspired by new collections, amidst the sights and sounds of Paris, felt extra fulfilling creatively. From contemporary creations to classics that have been reimagined for today, there was no shortage of high style on display for the home. The consensus from all: Winter, spring, summer or fall, Paris is always a good idea. paris-deco-off.com

GARDEN EXPANSION

Written and Produced by JENNIFER BOLES

One of Atlanta’s leading voices for growing the city’s green spaces, the ATLANTA BOTANICAL GARDEN is advancing the cause by soon becoming the city’s first cultural institution with direct access to the BELTLINE—a feat made possible thanks to a $25-million gift recently awarded to the Garden by the JAMES M. COX FOUNDATION. The gift, along with private donations, will allow the Garden to purchase 7 acres of commercial property along Piedmont Avenue, thereby extending the Garden’s footprint to the BeltLine. While the Garden’s existing entrance on Piedmont will continue to receive visitors and their cars, a planned second entrance,

located directly on the BeltLine, will provide an additional pedestrian-friendly access point. “Having a front door on the BeltLine is about sustainability,” says Garden president and CEO MARY PAT MATHESON. “We will become a community that moves with our feet rather than by cars.” In its early stages of planning, the second entrance is expected to welcome guests with a courtyard that Matheson envisions will bring some of the Garden directly out into the BeltLine. Entrance features being considered include a series of water gardens, art installations and an 18-foot sculpture of a phoenix, the symbol of Atlanta. Matheson is hopeful that the project will be finished by the summer of 2026, a goal which is intended to coincide with Atlanta’s hosting of the FIFA World Cup. And with the Piedmont Park Conservancy planning a future expansion of Piedmont Park that will ultimately converge with the BeltLine and the Garden, what Matheson refers to as “the green epicenter of Atlanta” is well on its way to becoming a reality.

Now known collectively as THE KROG DISTRICT, the historical Krog Street Market, Atlanta Stove Works and SPX Alley have been joined by two new buildings to create a cohesive and easy-to-navigate district featuring restaurants, retail shops and office space. Developed by Charlotte, North Carolina-based Asana Partners, The Krog District is adjacent to the BeltLine Eastside Trail.

Much like the last couple of years, the short supply of houses for sale continues to impact the Metro Atlanta residential real-estate market, a factor which leads JENNI BONURA, president and CEO of HARRY NORMAN, REALTORS, to anticipate a relatively flat year ahead. “The limited supply is expected to fall short of demand, the result of which will be maintenance in price levels, which while not expected to grow at the same levels as last year, will hold or show moderate growth up to about 5%,” says Bonura. Citing recent pended activity, Bonura estimates that currently there is a 2.2-month supply of available inventory, a situation owing to a broader economic uncertainty and a reluctance of some homeowners to sell in the current market because of increased mortgage costs. Also, if sales move slower, new construction of single-family homes will likely decrease as builders shift their focus to moving existing inventory, something that will only further exacerbate the problem. The inventory situation has improved since early last year, when inventory levels dipped to less than a one-month supply, the result of more homes having sold than hit the market. But even with 85% more homes available for sale at the end of January 2023 compared to the first of last year, there were still 40% fewer houses for sale than there were in January 2020. With Atlanta continuing to see an influx of new residents to the city, Bonura does not expect the housing supply to meet the current demand anytime soon. “Inventory levels will increase, but are expected to remain tight. These housing supply challenges will help to maintain home prices, which continues to experience net migration growth.” 24

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham FLOWERWISE, THE LAST FEW MONTHS have been subdued around my house. After spending more than I should have during the holidays (I caved and bought myself a big-screen TV), I tried to be prudent this winter by only buying a few potted orchids from Trader Joe’s and nothing more. Don’t get me wrong—orchids are always welcome in my home, but sometimes I long for splashes of vibrant color, especially come springtime. Now that my favorite spring flowers are in bloom (Oh, jonquils, how I’ve missed you!), I can’t wait to start bringing them indoors and let them work their cheerful magic. Clear glass containers are usually my go-to style of vase when arranging flowers, but at this time of year, I prefer to use decorative vessels that were specifically made for spring blooms. Think tulipieres, particularly those towering blue-and-white, pagoda-like versions. Yes, they are showstoppers even when they’re not holding flowers, but now that the flowers for which they were named are in bloom, it’s a shame not to put them to proper use. I love lavishing them with apricot tulips, but they also look great accented with daffodils in varying shades of yellow. I also like displaying spring flowers in those ceramic bulb bowls that have lidded tops dotted with holes. In theory, you’re supposed to fill the bowl with water, place a crocus or hyacinth bulb on top of each hole, and within a month or two, voilà! You’ve got beautiful indoor blooms. I, however, prefer using my vintage Mottahedeh bulb bowl like a vase, filling the holes with cut flowers to create a charming seasonal look. Daffodils and grape hyacinth are a winning combination in bulb bowls, but bunches of primroses can look equally sweet. Of course, no matter how attractive a vase or container might be, it can never really equal the natural beauty of a flower in bloom. The truth is that whether you have a tulipiere or not, the loveliness of a spring flower is such that even a plain juice glass will suffice.

AS A TRIBUTE TO THE CITY of Atlanta, partners Ryan Turner, Todd Mussman and Chris Hall of restaurant group Unsukay bring to life their latest concept Roshambo. Located inside the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center, restaurant-goers will be pleasantly surprised at what all is behind “The Diner’s Diner” light-up sign. “Todd, Ryan and myself are all transplants,” says Hall. “We chose this city and are proud to live here, raise our families here and call Atlanta home.” Also the brains behind Muss & Turner’s, Local Three Kitchen & Bar and MTH Pizza, the trio dedicates Roshambo to the love they have for the city and its people. “Roshambo is the traditional name for the game also known as Rock, Paper, Scissors,” says Hall. “And since we are modeling ourselves after a diner, we replaced it with Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.” Chef Kevin Leveille describes Roshambo’s dishes as seasonal diner classics with a nod to the history of the space. “We pay homage to Jim White’s old restaurant that was located in the shopping center with our Blackened Redfish Pontchartrain, and provide our own takes on diner classics at the same time,” says Leveille. Separated into different dining categories, guests can choose from a variety of dishes from the menu like the Elvis French Toast made with peanut butter mousse, banana, bacon and maple syrup or the Steak Dinner paired with a loaded potato and garlic broccolini. As an added thrill, each food item is plated on a painted hand representing rock, paper or scissors, and diners are encouraged to guess which symbol they have under their entree. “We want guests to have fun with the atmosphere and food,” says

“We want guests to have fun with the atmosphere and food, just as we do.” —Chef Kevin Leveille Leveille, “just as we do.” For the drinks, think authentic cocktails shaken to perfection. “I would describe the cocktails as absolute classics, made as they were originally,” says beverage manager Jonathan Kloepping. “Not only is our cocktail list very familiar for people who have been around a bar or two, but teaching our staff the history of these cocktails and where they originated helps to embrace the history and culture of the drink.” Designed by Amy Price of Starling Studio, John Boggs of Phase 5 Creative, and Bart Sasso of Sasso & Co. alongside Hall, Mussman and Turner, Roshambo’s interior exudes a cozy, yet stylish diner setting with plenty of Atlanta representation. Hall characterizes the design as a steady diet of wit, whimsy and irreverence. “Everything in Roshambo is there for a reason and has a story behind it,” says Hall. “Very little is random; that’s the way we like it—authentic and personal.” roshamboatl.com

SEEKING A RELAXING RETREAT for gatherings big and small, a pair of empty nesters purchased a lush lot on a point overlooking Lake Keowee in South Carolina and commissioned architect Peter Block of Peter Block Architects to design a home that effortlessly combines historic and contemporary influences. “This is a building with two souls,” says Block. “It feels old, but it has a youthful enthusiasm.”

Hard at Work

Wood, plaster, soapstone and brass elements elevate one another in the bright and airy kitchen.

In deference to the prominent stone walls throughout the home, interior designer Barbara Westbrook and project designer Elizabeth Hanson of Westbrook Interiors established a neutral color palette enlivened by oodles of texture, pops of color and one-of-a-kind artwork. In addition, Westbrook designed much of the cabinetry, creating a bar in the living room, for example, and built-in beds in the top-floor bunk room. The home’s mix of modern and historic elements begins in the woodpaneled foyer, where a collage made of gold leaf paper creates a moment of drama that teases at what’s to come. And a ribbon-like three-dimensional bentwood wall sculpture hangs on the plaster hood in the open kitchen,

which is outfitted with handcrafted oak cabinetry accented by dark soapstone countertops and brass hardware. “It’s unexpected up at the lake,” says Westbrook. “Artwork gives the house personality.” For example, she points to the vibrant illuminated piece depicting butterflies in the formal dining room, where a modern branchlike chandelier floats over a shapely dining table with a sandblasted oak and steel base that juxtaposes the stone walls. A prominent stone wall with a fireplace likewise defines the living area, which is furnished with plush tailored pieces in neutral hues that play off the colors in the stone. “These pretty warm tones feel very inviting,” she says.

As do the lush surroundings by landscape designer Alex Smith, who incorporated a mix of specimen trees and native plants that add texture and color throughout the year. “The house and landscape are so complementary of each other, and both have aged so well so quickly,” says Smith. The house soon became a beloved retreat for the owners, who enjoy hosting family and friends for extended visits. After long weekends filled with swimming, karaoke and shuffleboard, the grandchildren have been known to shed tears when it’s time to head home. “It all feels right,” says Westbrook. “Like everything belongs and you can just relax.” See Resources, Back of Book.

FOR DENVER-BASED EMPTY nesters, Pete and Kathy Gillespie, the Gulf shore community of Seagrove, Florida, has long signaled rest and relaxation—a place to paddleboard, bike and take long walks on the beach. After many visits to the area, they purchased a property near the water and commissioned GLM Designs, Inc. to design a three-level stucco abode and interior designer and longtime friend Liz Williams to help them make it their own. Hoping future grandchildren will spend time there, they emphasized that comfort and durability were just as important as aesthetics. “We didn’t want it to feel like a show home,” says Kathy. “We envisioned a place where you can throw a towel over the chair, plop down and watch TV.” Noting their appreciation for green and blue hues, the designer leaned into the palette. The painted pecky cypress perimeter cabinetry in the kitchen, for example, is punctuated by a steely blue island paired with apple green counter stools. And lime green draperies pop 57

A large poolside patio includes areas for dining and conversation alongside a stand-alone stucco fireplace. In addition, each of the primary bedrooms has its own furnished patio and there’s a third-floor deck with ocean views. ANNE ERBESFIELD AND Cathleen Carrington are designers, business partners, sisters and best friends. For more than 30 years, they’ve worked together to create beautiful interiors for their clients in Atlanta, playing off each other’s design sensibilities and sense of fun. It’s not uncommon for one sister to visit the other’s home and stealthily rearrange decor to the delight of the other. This kindred design perspective and humorforward approach has fortified their relationship beyond the typical bounds of sisterhood. “We’re best friends,” says Erbesfield. And after a visit to the North Carolina High Country, Erbesfield found the perfect mountain retreat that was a short walk from the charming downtown, featured a spectacular view of Satulah Mountain and had plenty of extra space to host family and friends. The designer wanted a vacation home that celebrated her love of travel, antiques and art, and with Carrington’s help, she deftly embellished spaces with an eclectic mix of treasured finds 75

acquired over more than 30 years of European travel. “So much of the art and accessories have a travel story, some very funny to retell,” says Erbesfield. In the living room, they turned a one-and-a-half story wall into a soaring composition, anchored by old French herb-drying racks. “They were covered in dirt and so expensive,” Erbesfield recalls with a laugh. “The shop owner said, ‘That’s French dirt, and you’re getting it for free.’” Antique etchings, tramp art frames, pewter, white pottery and architectural fragments also enrich the living room canvas, along with a number of contemporary accents like a whitewashed root cocktail table and aubergine occasional chair. “With an experienced eye, the

mix of vintage with new complements both styles,” says Erbesfield of the sisters’ aptitude for amping up intrigue with edgy pieces. For a splash of color, the duo applied a portiere in dramatic green linen between the living room and sunroom. “It creates a grand entrance, enhances the verdant scene outside and adds a softness,” says Erbesfield. The hue is echoed on Baker club chairs that have been re-covered many times and displayed in four different homes. “Repurposing pieces and collections gives them a fresh new perspective,” says Carrington. right Celebrating its 75th year, The Colony Hotel gleams in a fresh rendition of its hallmark pink hue, appropriately called Colony Pink. below Newly renovated guest rooms are now swathed in Schumacher patterned wallcoverings and custom furniture by Society Social Village.

“TAKE A PICTURE WITH THE pool behind me. I want people to know that I’m at The Colony,” says the woman at the table next to me to her dining partner during a leisurely lunch at Swifty’s. The restaurant’s airy terrace edging the hotel pool buzzes with conversation as guests dine under fairytale hanging gardens and chandeliers, while servers carrying bottles of rosé and champagne are on a constant march to refill glasses. The Colony Hotel, situated on the posh island of Palm Beach, Florida, is a longtime destination for jet-set vacationers, snowbirds and local socialites who are drawn to its happy spaces and sociable atmosphere. Now in its 75th year, it’s continuing to transform. Think of it as your tropical Barbie Dreamhouse where playful design inspo is at every turn. The hotel’s facade gleams in a fresh rendition of its hallmark pink hue, a Farrow & Ball custom paint color appropriately dubbed Colony Pink, and guest rooms have been refreshed by design 88

Rooms and suites are wrapped in sweet details, from scalloped headboards to rattan and faux-bamboo furniture by Society Social, as well as Schumacher patterned wallcoverings and fabrics dashed in pink, green and blue colors exclusive to the hotel. Uniquely, if guests fall in love with their room, they can shop the details through the hotel or their design partners’ websites to recreate the look at home. (Even dreamier? They’ve partnered with Petite Plume to fashion custom pajamas so you can sleep like you’re at The Colony.) It’s also worth taking a peek at each floor’s individual de Gournay hand-painted murals. The lobby’s living room and every elevator landing portrays a different mural story, including underwater scenes with drifting turtles and bright corals, The Colony’s mascot monkey Johnnie Brown riding a bike along the waterfront, to Florida’s lush foliage. These scenes will inspire vacationers to enjoy the area’s

beauty that’s right outside the hotel. Early in the morning, zip off on the pink-andgreen bikes for a scenic ride along the Lake Trail that weaves past moored yachts, vintage condos and rows of bright-pink bougainvillea. The hotel is within walking distance to Worth Avenue’s uberluxe shops, as well as The Royal Poinciana Plaza, another high-end shopping destination; and art lovers should spend a few hours at the Norton Museum of Art. Return to the hotel to sunbathe by the pool, where there’s always great people-watching, or hop on their golf cart to be whisked away for a beach day with chairs and umbrellas swathed in the hotel’s signature colors. In the evenings, gather in the sociable Living Room to listen to a

guitarist play, and if you’re there on a Sunday or Monday night, mingle with locals at the hotel’s beloved game nights at Swifty’s. The property is bursting with partnerships and programming that caters to an A-list crowd of islanders and guests. During high season, which loosely runs from December to April, the hotel hosts resident celebrity trainers like Isaac Boots, and a guest room is transformed into a peaceful oasis for Dr. Barbara Sturm’s covetable glow-inducing facials. The rich programming is meant to make guests and locals feel at home, and that familiarity is why vacationers have been flocking there since the 1940s. And now you can leave with pieces from your stylish stay to bring back home. thecolonypalmbeach.com

WALK ABLE WONDER LAS CATALINAS, on Costa Rica’s Guanacaste coast, is a study in serenity, health and luxury Written by JENNIFER BRADLEY FRANKLIN

I FIND MYSELF BREATHING A sigh of relief each time I traverse the cobblestone streets of Las Catalinas. Instead of firing up a car to get from point A to point B, everything in this resort village on Costa Rica’s lush coast is within walking distance. That’s by design: The community, created by Atlanta-based developer Charles Brewer, is an exemplar of the New Urbanist movement that prioritizes densely packed residential neighborhoods with amenities such as restaurants, recreation and shopping. The structure means visitors and more than 150 homeowners interact organically, both with each other and with nature. Guests might choose the 45-room Santarena Hotel, with its whitewashed exterior and bright teal accents, airy rooms with soaring ceilings and marble-clad bathrooms, and a rooftop pool with sweeping coastal views. Groups of friends or family will find an ideal home away from home in one of the rental villas, each unique in design, layout, room configuration and decor. For my tropical getaway, I spent a few days in the master suite at Casa Los Monos, a four-bedroom property with an infinity pool overlooking the windswept beach below. Each vacation home comes with a dedicated “House Mom,” or hostess, who whips up gourmet breakfasts and all-day snacks. 90

GETTING THERE

Delta Air Lines offers a daily nonstop flight from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to Liberia Guanacaste Airport. Las Catalinas can arrange a private transfer for the 50-minute drive to the resort.

Since not a minute of my time was spent on roads clogged with rush hour traffic, I had plenty of time to explore. I broke a sweat at CORE by Chakfitness, the outdoor gym that looks like something out of The Flintstones; hiked on a network of trails that spans more than 30 miles; and lounged on the Playa Danta beach while crashing waves and tropical birds created a tranquil soundtrack. I barely scratched the surface: Fans of mountain biking, surfing, scuba diving and sailing will find plenty to keep them busy. If the variety of activities is dizzying, prepare to be equally dazzled by the culinary offerings. Pots & Bowls is the go-to spot for healthy, fresh fare served all day (think smoothie bowls, coconut pancakes and tuna poke), while Pascual is just right for tropical tapas. Have a creative cocktail by an award-winning mixologist at Ponciana or a frosty beer at the newly opened Papagayo Brewing Co. For me, the highlight was having Armando Hernandez Chavarria, the chef at Copper & Stone— the on-property bodega, gourmet grocery and curated wine cellar— cook a five-course dinner at our villa. Each course was more impressive than the last, creating the perfect send-off. The development’s Beach Town neighborhood was completed in late 2022, and the next one, El Prado, is underway. Even when the master plan is fully executed, approximately 1,000 of the 1,200 acres will remain a preserve to support the regeneration of the native tropical dry forest and keep nature front and center. For both visitors and guests, that may be the greatest luxury of all. lascatalinascr.com 91

WINE WONDERLAND

WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON may not be a place that you’ve heard of, but it’s a wine destination to remember Written by ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON

“EVERYONE FALLS IN LOVE with Walla Walla.” It’s a sentiment you’ll repeatedly hear during a getaway to a place that many travelers outside of the Pacific Northwest have never heard of. Located in Eastern Washington, a four-hour drive or quick flight from Seattle or Portland, Oregon, Walla Walla takes effort to get to, but once there, it’s tempting to never leave—and many don’t. The result is a town full of multigenerational families and global dreamers that have brought their talents to this once-quiet farming community that’s become a wine mecca. It’s easy to be smitten by the area’s breathtaking Americana beauty of golden wheat fields, rustic farmlands, sweeping vineyards and spectacular sunsets that set the rambling landscapes on fire nightly. As prolific as the beautiful scenery is the area’s awardwinning wine. Walla Walla shares the 92

same latitude as France’s Burgundy and Bordeaux regions, so there are exquisite red wines to sip like syrah, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Yet, with nearly 3,000 acres of grapes and around 130 wineries, there’s not a distinct varietal that Walla Walla is best known for. Its wide-ranging wines are racking up numerous accolades, solidifying the area as one of the nation’s top wine destinations. Discover an elegant wine tasting and captivating vistas at Doubleback, founded by NFL football legend Drew Bledsoe, who grew up in Walla Walla and had a lifelong dream to return and craft a perfect cabernet sauvignon. Another hometown star, Justin Wylie, also came back after living in Italy to make his own wine and open Va Piano Vineyards. There, guests lazily sip complex cabernet francs and richly finished syrahs from the comfort of a

hanging swing or in the Tuscanyinspired tasting room. To meet the next generation of winemakers, head to the Walla Walla Airport District to discover stand-alone incubators housing start-up wineries, like female-owned SMAK Wines, known for their refreshing rosés. In the adorable downtown lined with shops and restaurants, there are dozens of tasting rooms worthy of a sampling flight, including Maison Bleue and Goose Ridge. To soak up the scenery while tasting wine, take an electric bike tour through several vineyards with Kickstand Tours. The best time to truly immerse yourself in the area’s diverse wine scene is during Celebrate Walla Walla Valley Wine, an annual event in July that offers rare vintage tastings, winemaker dinners and educational talks. Since good wine demands good food, there’s a strong culinary scene with standouts like Brasserie Four for relaxed French fare, Hattaway’s on Alder for Southern comfort food that shines with local ingredients, and AK’s Mercado for flavorful tacos and street food.

Visitors can float through fragrant purple fields at Blue Mountain Lavender Farm, owned by a French expat, to cut lavender for bouquets or enjoy a picnic on the grounds. At Frog Hollow Farm, gather heirloom produce for that picnic, meet their animals and learn about farm life from the sweet family who owns it. For something that’s quintessentially Walla Walla, stay at The Barn B&B, a country inn with eight spacious suites created by Naina and Anand Rao. The husbandand-wife duo worked in luxury hotels in eight countries, and while they originally had their sights on settling in Napa Valley, Walla Walla won them over. Harnessing their hospitality experience, the couple nurtures guests’ every need from pillow preferences to adjustable beds and luxe indulgences like an outdoor shower. Mornings start with international breakfasts often made by Naina, and free time can be spent soaking in the heated pool and enjoying the mountain vistas. It’s their love letter to Walla Walla. wallawalla.org 93
