calendar on my desk may claim that there are 31 days in December, but why does it invariably seem shorter? Every year, by the time I look up, the month has whizzed by—already more than half over—and I’ve yet to complete any holiday shopping, put up a tree or spend quality time with friends. This year I would promise to do better, but, frankly, I’m just going to see how it goes. After all, another holiday pressure is the last thing anyone needs. The best any of us can do is to take a slow, steady march through the month instead of running at a marathon-like stride. Whether you’re marching or traipsing, I hope you’ll take some time to stroll through this year’s Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Christmas House, held at The Mansion on Peachtree from November 26 through December 12. At any pace, have a memorable month and best wishes for a wonderful 2011.

Wining and Dining in ST. CROIX An annual cook-off in an exotic locale draws celebrity chefs from across the U.S., including one Atlantan

If there’s anything better than enjoying good food and fine wine, it’s enjoying good food and fine wine in the tropical locale of St. Croix. Named one of the Ten Best International Food and Wine Festivals by Forbes Traveler, the St. Croix Food & Wine Experience showcases the diverse cuisine available on the Caribbean island during a week-long event that includes gourmet dinners, wine seminars and auctions—even a culinary competition, A Taste of St. Croix. The annual cook-off benefits the St. Croix Foundation (stxfoundation.org), a non-profit foundation that administers a number of local programs. And the competition is fierce. Last year’s event saw more than 50 local chefs go head-to-head, preparing their specialties for more than 1,500 attendees and celebrity chef judges that included Atlanta’s own Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun’s, Krog Bar and

Kevin Rathbun Steak. And Rathbun will be a returnee at the 2011 event, set for April 10-16. He’ll be joined by fellow returnees Tim Love, chef/owner of The Lonesome Dove Western Bistro and The Love Shack in Ft. Worth and Iron Chef America contender/restaurant owner Robert Treviño of Puerto Rico as well as New York’s Anita Lo and Boston’s Ana Sortun. Additionally, the celebrity chefs will hold cooking demonstrations and put on widely acclaimed Cork & Fork dinners, where they are paired with top wine experts in some of the island’s most breathtaking—and often historic—homes. Plus, select guest chefs will participate in the popular Iron Chef vs. Island Chef competition. All this on the white sand beaches of St. Croix. For foodies and oenophiles alike, it’s paradise in its truest form. For more information, visit stcroixfoodandwine.com.

Kenney returns to Marcia Wood Gallery for a solo exhibition of his finest sculptures and paintings in “No Ideas but in Things.” His distinctive style frequently uses images of children to produce reflective, layered pieces that trigger provoking discourse. The High also showcases a collection of some 75 vintage gelatin silver prints by preeminent Depression-era photographer Peter Sekaer. These rare works, many of which were not on public view prior to the exhibit, chronicle American concerns and culture from 1935 through 1945. Through 1/9. (404) 733-4469; high.org 15

KATE ABNEY

This root vegetable—sweeter and lighter in color than its cousin, the carrot—is often described as a cross between the latter and the potato. Parsnips taste best if allowed to remain in the ground until after the first frost, when their starches are swiftly converted to sugars, rendering this veggie unexpectedly sweet. In fact, parsnips were once used as a sweetener, which explains why they are so often caramelized in recipes. Just as frequently stewed, fried, roasted or boiled, parsnips have a nutty flavor and a celery-like fragrance that make them a favorite winter addition to a number of local dishes.

Special performance by

Francine Reed Chicago-born songstress Francine Reed has had a passion for singing since early childhood, singing professionally with her family’s gospel group from the young age of 5. As an adult, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where she began to sing in local jazz clubs and became known for her powerful voice and commanding stage presence, delivering an eclectic blend of jazz, blues and R&B, and often opening for such headliners as Miles Davis, Etta James, Smokey Robinson and the Crusaders. In the mid-’80s, Reed played with Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, was featured on several of Lovett’s albums and appeared with him on television shows such as Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show and Regis and Kathy Lee. In the mid-’90s, she moved to Atlanta to pursue a solo career and recorded her debut solo album, “I Want You to Love Me” and her follow-up, “Can’t Make It On My Own,” which earned her nominations for the prestigious W.C. Handy Award. She later lent her vocals to the albums of Willie Nelson, Delbert McClinton and Roy Orbison. Reed has become one of Atlanta’s most treasured artists and continues to expand her fan base at venues around the country. For several months out of the year, she performs in Seattle or San Francisco, appearing as the “Chanteuse” for Teatro ZinZanni. Reed continues to bless audiences with her amazing vocals and vibrant personality; she is truly a musical experience that should not be missed.

Photos

Sell Nan Homes Haverty 2505 HABERSHAM ROAD Nan Haverty a top real estate agent at Beacham & Company, Realtors clearly understands that photography is the key to both buying and selling homes. What is the first question a buyer asks when looking for a home? – They ask for pictures. Photography generates an immediate reaction. That is the beginning of their journey. When you are listing a home, what is important? – My marketing expertise. The first step is to schedule a photo shoot with a professional photographer. Words and pictures must work together. What photographers do you work with? – I work with Ed Wolkis and Blayne Beacham. Ed is the author of How To Take Photos That Move Houses. His style is precise and his attention to light is magical. Blayne’s style leans toward cool tones with lots of natural light using less color. She is recognized for being the creative director and photographer for The Beacham Series magazine. Tell us a little bit about the dog in the photo. – Ed Wolkis photographed this home. The golden retriever just happened to be at the right place at the right time setting the tone for the feel of the home – understated, yet chic. The natural light and warmth lead one to feel they are in a villa in Tuscany. What do you most love about this home? – I love the romantic feeling of this home intertwined with a sense of seclusion. It is a perfect family retreat located on one of the most prestigious streets in Atlanta.

A photograph is usually looked at – seldom looked into. Ansel Adams

Nan Haverty www.nanhaverty.com

In Town

1631 WEST PACES FERRY ROAD Is this a new home? – Yes, it was built by YM Derazi Custom Homes and photographed by Blayne Beacham.

Tell us about the design. – It is a European style home. It is called the Normandy Estate, a French manor built with beautiful fieldstone, a cedar shake roof and copper gutters. Tell us a little bit about YM Derazi. – I work exclusively with YM Derazi. Both Shaba Derazi and Jim Meathe are extremely organized, paying close attention to every detail. They listen to their clients carefully, ensuring that their dream home will come true, by managing the project flawlessly. Whether it is a renovation, a new home, or a commercial build, YM Derazi always exceeds their client’s expectations.

Would this home be considered an estate? – Yes. Blayne did a wonderful job in photographing this home as it was challenging due to the size and all of the different angles. The goal in this photo shoot was to present to the viewer a warm and inviting home on a large scale.

7955 Cochran Mill Road A step away from Atlanta Is it unusual for an In Town agent to sell farms? – My situation is unusual – as I split my time between

In Town and Country, being a cofounder of Serenbe. I am passionate about land. Land is finite. It is the most spiritual connection, photographing land at either sunrise or sunset, it just reminds you that God is present.

How is photographing land different from photographing homes? – Ed Wolkis photographed this landscape. It is important when photographing land to be precise about the time of day, the location

of the sun and the depth of the property. After the photo is taken there is a lot of work to be done to achieve this result.

and Country

Written by Jessica Vaquera Photographed by Blayne Beacham & Ed Wolkis Layout by Rick Dallas

1071 FOXCROFT ROAD Is Foxcroft a traditional home? – It is a combination. Better said, classicism meets Keith Summerour as he renovated this home. Keith has a keen sense of both design and architecture. The best word to describe this home is simply elegant. Blayne Beacham did an amazing job of photographing this home. Her sophisticated style and attention to space and how it is used comes through in these photographs. What is unique to you about this home? – Both the location and the privacy combined, as it is located in Kingswood, an Atlanta landmark for Atlanta families in the heart of Buckhead.

What was your favorite photograph of this home? – That would be a hard choice. I love the photograph of the back of the home and the outdoor spaces and the relationship between the two. It is so important as a realtor that the outdoor living spaces are highlighted, as they are used most often.

In closing, it is apparent that you are passionate not only about real estate but about photography? – Yes, I am. The photos allow a memory, whether it is a bungalow or an estate, there is an owner’s personal story behind it. It is the person or family and our journey together that I remember the most, not the business transaction, but the relationships.

The Alliance Theatre

Now in its 42nd season, Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award® and a leading national theater, creates the powerful experience of shared theater for diverse people on two stages for youth and adult audiences. Under the leadership of the Jennings Hertz Jr. Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre is a national theater with a local address, reaching out annually to almost 200,000 patrons and members of the community. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance launched three Tony Award-winning hits to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Most recently, the Alliance transferred Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away to Broadway for a critically acclaimed Tony Award®-nominated run. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is founding its nationally recognized Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. The Alliance Theatre offers extensive education and outreach programs such as the Institute for Educators and the Collision Project for high school students. The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. are seeing democratization of design through many chain stores and outlets that, while in good taste, are all very impersonal. The biggest challenge going forward will be figuring out how to personalize these products and make them one’s own—a quandary best solved with the help of a professional designer.

about the art of living and the living arts. My goal is to inspire individuality and creativity in my clients and those who see my interiors. I strive for the unpredictable and like to layer my interiors to create more interest. Like my late business partner Tony Duquette, I am not interested in the “plain white of the refrigerator door!

PHOEBE HOWARD Mrs. Howard Fourteen years ago, Phoebe and Jim Howard opened the doors to their first store, Mrs. Howard, in Jacksonville, FL. The goal was simple: to create a retail space that showcased Jim’s architectural and decorating talent and Phoebe’s natural skills for buying, decorating and merchandising. Five years later, they added another store, Max & Company, which features a younger, more modern approach. Now, the Howards have Mrs. Howard and Max & Company stores in Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, Charlotte and Atlanta. Over the years, Phoebe’s penchant for creating stylish spaces has evolved into her own brand of decorating, which has garnered praise from national media as well as her clients. Known for her fresh take on traditional style, Phoebe’s work can only be characterized by its timelessness and her mantra to “keep it pretty.” And today, she continues to scour the globe for new products for her stores and clients, as well as create her own exclusive line of pillows, lamps, mirrors and case goods. The Mrs. Howard and Max & Company shops, as well as Phoebe’s own decorating projects, are a veritable library of design inspiration, and have been published in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Coastal Living, Cottage Living, Southern Accents, InStyle, Traditional Home and Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles, among others.

AMY D. MORRIS Amy D. Morris Interiors, LLC Amy Morris graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in interior design. While her education prepared her with a solid design foundation, it was her internship with Gandy/Peace Inc. that kickstarted her interest in contemporary design. Following her 1999 graduation, Morris went on to work with Barbara Westbrook for five years. There, she acquired an appreciation for both traditional and French modern design. Pairing those influences with her sophisticated design sense, Morris opened Amy D. Morris Interiors in 2005, thus creating her own polished, yet relaxed and transitional, aesthetic while paying special attention to the architecture, balance, scale and color in each interior space. Her signature style can be seen in projects across the Southeast, from Atlanta to Baton Rouge and Amelia Island to Orange Beach, FL. In 2009, Morris was a winner of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles’ Bath of the Year contest for which she earned a cover feature in the magazine’s July issue. Her work was again highlighted on the cover of AH&L’s March and October 2010 editions. Morris was also showcased in Traditional Home’s September 2010 issue and Décor’s Fall-Winter 2010 issue.

HOMES

What makes a design a classic? If there is one thing we’ve gathered from our past work, it’s that even as trends ebb and flow, classic style endures. For that reason, we’ve amassed the ultimate retrospective of published rooms: our 100 SUPERLATIVE SPACES that have resonated most—in the AH&L offices, on newsstands and in readers’ keepsake collections. Like the magazine itself, no single style defines them; they run the gamut of genres—cottage, traditional, minimalist, contemporary—and designer names big and small, yet remain classics above all. We’re proud to have been the vehicle for bringing these into your homes and, hopefully, inspiring the evolution of your own personal style along the way. Perhaps they’ve even had a hand in influencing the aesthetic of another featured designer, ALISON WOMACK JOWERS. When she took on the project featured here, Womack Jowers was not confined by notions of masculine or feminine, current or age-specific; she simply designed a home that was fresh, classic and transcendent—now that’s something we can live with.

100 Superlative Spaces 2000 2010

A

from

to

As 2010 draws to a close and we move toward 2011, we thought we’d look back at some of the most memorable spaces that we’ve published in a little more than a decade. One hundred spaces, to be exact. It isn’t necessarily a “best of ” list. Rather, they’re rooms that made big impressions on readers when they were originally published or created lingering memories for AH&L staffers. Some of these spaces—even those from years ago—are still often talked about; others have long since been forgotten but are no less extraordinary. Many of these rooms were chosen for their unequivocal devotion to personal style while others are just pretty, plain and simple. Some are charming; some are cozy. There’s a mix of classic and contemporary, and scattered throughout are a handful of cottagestye spaces, but we’ve left out most of the chateaux. What’s your favorite space? Let us know by visiting facebook.com/atlantahomesmag. In the meantime, we’re working on the next 100.

LOOKING FORWARD— WITH A NOD TO THE PAST— ALISON WOMACK JOWERS REDEFINES CLASSIC STYLE FOR TODAY

WRITTEN BY HEATHER J. PAPER PHOTOGRAPHED BY EMILY J. FOLLOWILL PRODUCED BY CLINTON SMITH

With Paul Montgomery hand-painted panels wrapping the dining room, designer Alison Womack Jowers intentionally chose complementary furnishings that wouldn’t compete. Case in point is the George III sideboard, a wedding gift from her mother, as well as the coral silk panels at the windows. Chair upholstery, Jim Thompson silk. Chandelier, Niermann Weeks.

99

Throughout the house, the designer beautifully balances traditional style with contemporary touches and antiques with brand new ďŹ nds, as is the case with a pair of chunky acrylic brackets supporting classic green vases. Opaline boxes on the glass-top table are among her favorite collectibles.

When designer Alison Womack Jowers took on this Buckhead residence, it was already close to her heart. She was, after all, dating the homeowner, Jay Jowers. “When we started, I didn’t know if I’d eventually be living here, too, or not!” she says with a laugh. But as the project progressed so did the relationship and, by the time the house was nearing completion, the two were engaged and eventually married. Thus, the designer was able to infuse some of her own personal preferences, as well. That wouldn’t have been so easily accomplished if she hadn’t started with such a solid “canvas” based on a primarily neutral palette. It lends itself to a comfortable, make-yourself-at-home feeling but—at the same time—it’s smartly chic, too. “I wanted the house to have sophisticated design by using traditional elements, but with an edge,” the designer explains.

In the living room, for instance, neutral fabrics get added visual interest thanks to a variety of textures and the shapely silhouettes of the upholstered pieces themselves. At one end of the room, a pair of French chairs teams up with a sofa, their classic forms emphasized with nailhead trim. At the other, a pair of armchairs with softly curved backs— wrapped in silk—anchor the fireside seating area, quietly complementing a stunning Chinoiserie coffee table.

left In the bar area, a blond ostrich fabric covers the walls, giving them a luxe look. “It’s fun to use in a small area,” says Womack Jowers. “The fabric has a great texture on its own and then I trimmed it out with gimp and nailheads.” above The breakfast room is anchored by a table made by local designer Erin O’Brien. “She did the base then we picked out a zebrawood top,” says Womack Jowers. Chair upholstery, Clarence House. right A detail of the coffee table.

102

Womack Jowers tries to take the same advice that she gives to her clients: Listen to your designer but go with your heart. “This Chinoiserie coffee table from Parc Monceau is the perfect example,” she says. “It spoke to me. And sometimes you have to take a risk.”

103

A Baker wing chair, covered in a Suzanne Rheinstein fabric from Lee Jofa, has an enviable ďŹ reside spot as well as a clear view to the family room’s bay window. Simple blinds and Roman shades dress the window so the homeowners can fully appreciate the landscape beyond.

104

above left Over the fireplace, a circa-1850 French trumeau mirror commands attention. More casual than its gilt counterparts, the piece is perfectly suited to this family room. Meanwhile, even the collection of brown-and-white Terre Melee displayed in the bookcases carries out the sophisticated neutral scheme. above right The one exception to this home’s subtle neutral scheme can be found in the back hallway, where Womack Jowers upholstered the walls in a green-and-white Michael Devine fabric. “I love the color and the design, and upholstering it on the wall shows off the pattern so much better,” she says. The antique bench is an inherited piece, updated with a textured fabric and Osborne & Little trim. The red wellies are by Jimmy Choo.

“It was made in the 1950s by a father-and-son team famous for Midcentury modern furniture,” Womack Jowers explains. “The artists describe it as ‘furniture as functional art.’ I immediately loved it, so much so that I bought it before I even researched it!” But part of the draw, she adds, was the father-and-son aspect—not surprising since she’s part of a mother-and-daughter design team herself. Womack Jowers and her mother, Cheryl Womack, own Womack Interiors. The same neutral approach grounds the dining room, where a glasstop table is surrounded by chairs covered in a Jim Thompson silk horizontal strié. Not surprisingly, given her keen attention to detail, Womack Jowers gimped the chairs with a slight fringe edge to add textural interest. But the pièce de résistance in this room is unquestionably the Paul Montgomery hand-painted panels that line the walls. Initially chosen to reflect her now-husband’s love of birds and flowers, they also reflect the designer’s signature style of keeping things light. “I love Chinoiserie

but nothing too bold or heavy,” she says, “and these panels begin the tone of softness that continues throughout the house.” It’s that kind of twist on tradition that gives the entire residence its fresh appeal. It’s the green-and-white Michael Devine fabric that upholsters the walls of the back hallway. It’s the antique trumeau mirror in the family room that—unlike more typical painted and gilt types—has a casual wood finish that contrasts beautifully with the painted-brick fireplace. It’s even the subtle pops of yellow in the master bedroom, balancing the surrounding cool gray hues with just the right touch of warmth. But, at the end of the day, what satisfies the designer most about this project? Not a treasured antique nor any design find, for that matter. “What I like best is knowing that my husband is comfortable, relaxing in a chair in a room that he loves,” she says. “Knowing that everyone—children, guests and the dogs—are all comfortable. It puts a smile on my face.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

opposite To create a soft, restful feeling in the master bedroom, Womack Jowers combined shades of milky white and silvery gray with pops of yellow. The colors mix and mingle on the bed—with its tailored tufted headboard—and in the organic bamboo linens, and are also echoed in a small painting by Melissa Payne Baker. Bedside table, Bradley Hughes. Vintage Murano lamp, The Mercantile. below An antique desk, handed down to the designer from her mother, underscores a collection of antique intaglios. “The desk is an antique that I grew up with,” says Womack Jowers. “Using the acrylic chair at the desk gives a contemporary flair and assures that there is no competition between one piece in the grouping.”

Taste This! Marcia says that a little bad taste can be a very good thing—and she’s right

After attending a zillion design workshops last month with fancy-pants editors, designers and bloggers, I was rocked back on my Badgley Mischka evening sandals—worn very inappropriately at high noon—when I attended a presentation put on by a designer who shall remain nameless. She proceeded to treat her audience to a slideshow of rooms “in bad taste” from the 1950s to today. She was seemingly suggesting that the slavish adherence to trends was a big no-no. OK, we can all agree that our parents’ love of avocado and rust in the ’60s did damage to our psyches, but who was she to say what was bad taste? Perhaps now is the perfect time for a debate. Edwardian interior decorator Elsie de Wolfe put it best when she said she preferred a “witty exhibitionist to a dull duke.” Amen, sister! In fact, as we move more and more to sameness—thanks to stores like IKEA, Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn (and I shop them all, by the way)—there is a chance that we are getting bland. Where there is no personality there is no taste and, as Dorothy Parker said, “A little bad taste is like a nice dash of paprika.” Get out your spice rack. I know that fashion designers are all over this idea, creating wild and unwearable clothes for their runway shows, but in interior design we have an easier way to express ourselves. Let your freak flag fly. Mine does and no one seems to mind. Well, my daughter, Anabelle, did give me the once-, twice- and three times over last week as I headed out to the showroom. She scorned my top hat, derided my shaggy red fur coat and swore she would never speak to me again if I wore the same tulle ballet skirt ensemble (or, as she called it, my “Big Bo Peep” look) within five miles of her school. I didn’t care, and that’s the point. If we keep hearing that coral is in and buy a pillow that follows the trend, do we chuck it when someone says it’s so over? No! Not if we like it. The safest bet may be to avoid trends altogether but that’s no darn fun either. I like mirrored furniture and am not throwing mine out. In fact, I’m thinking about mirroring an entire room at the next show house.

My homes have all been photographed, and when I think of how little money I have spent over the years on décor, I have to ask “Why?” The answer: Because my choices have all been wildly idiosyncratic. I went to Haiti and then painted a mural of downtown Port-au-Prince on my living room walls. I liked trellis so I did pink grosgrain ribbon all over Anabelle’s room. I like Gustav Klimt, so with my house painter, I did a mural of squiggly gold, black and white giant rectangles in a day. And right now, I am painting Anabelle’s room with fashion figures that I saw in a 1960s issue of Vogue. If you love seashells, get gobs of them. If you like driftwood, use it in all your vases. If you like chartreuse, go crazy with it. Last year, my friend Deenie begged me to deck out her bedroom in violet. Her husband, Toby, promised he would never speak to us again. He is British and it was simply bad, bad taste to “tart up a room like a bordello.” But we did it, with a violet rug, violet walls, violet draperies and cool fabrics from Manuel Canovas, F. Schumacher and Jim Thompson. I was there last weekend and found him nestled in his purple boudoir, happy as a clam. What’s more, when we all decamped for the Royal Ascot in June and landed at his sister’s elegant flat, we found that she had replicated his bedroom in none other color than violet. Now, he says he couldn’t sleep in a room that wasn’t purple. His family sent him off to bed with the wish, “Purple Dreams!” With the jet lag, he slept 18 hours.
