WOULDN’T IT BE LOVELY IF AUTUMN in Atlanta this year were as temperate, pleasant and saturated with color like the Spring we recently experienced? If there’s one thing I’ve learned during the pandemic, it’s that the weather, and the ever-changing intensity of the daylight, affects my family’s state of mind more than I ever realized. Speaking of forces of nature and their effect on our daily lives, Atlanta restaurateur George McKerrow, whose personal residence on the banks of the Chattahoochee River is featured on page 26, sums it up best: “Our backyard is a canvas that moves with the weather and the time of year.” The river, in fact, dictated the architecture for the modernist dwelling. “What defines the river is that it’s constantly moving, so we didn’t

want the architecture to be static,” comments architect Jordan Williams of Plexus R+D. The change in seasons also means that Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is opening the doors to our Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse this month. Located in a brand-new cul de sac in Brookhaven, the new-build is aptly described as a “Christmas present” by designer Janie Wilburn, who specified the interior selections for the project. OME OF THE HALLMARKS of a great designer include a high retention rate of previous clients; the commitment to buy quality during the first project so that it can be incorporated into future projects; and the ability to adapt to different circumstances for the same client. When renowned designer Judy Bentley created this Buckhead townhouse, she did all three things in one fell swoop. Having designed several homes for the client, Bentley was familiar with their aesthetic preferences. However, this project was a notable departure from both their previous primary and vacation homes since it involved significant downsizing. “They were ready for a change. They wanted to live graciously, but in a smaller home in Atlanta,” says Bentley. Working with architect Cathie Magnan Power, Bentley made impactful changes to the townhouse. Ceilings were raised, pocket doors were installed, and a new kitchen, bathrooms and an elevator were included in the considerable renovation. “The clients said, ‘We’re turning it over to you,’ so we gutted it,” says Bentley.

The serene chinoiserie theme continues into the powder room.

An extensive collection of antiques had been purchased from Toby West 30 years ago when Bentley designed the first home for the owners. Additionally, Bentley started their blue-and-white porcelain collection in the 1990s, and recent additions have created a large assemblage. “They wanted to use all of their antiques and decorative pieces but in a lighter, fresher way,” says Bentley. By mixing a subtly sophisticated color palette with contemporary art, Bentley melded antiques and traditional decorative arts for a new spin on a classic motif. Noting that her client completely trusted her guidance, Bentley pushed the boundaries of old and new. “I absolutely love the blue-and-white leopard print carpet by Stark, and the custom iron detail in the foyer is tailored and crisp,” says Bentley. Although the clients have downsized, they’ve upped the ante on creating a smaller, brighter home with beloved former pieces. It takes a deft and experienced hand to navigate that goal, and fortunately Bentley has that in spades. See Resources, Back of Book.

When a collection came onto the market during this home renovation, Bentley was able to secure more pieces for her client.

THE PANDEMIC MAY HAVE CHANGED just about everyone’s plans, but rather than foregoing getaways, some Atlantans are investing in close-to-town vacation homes. “There are two camps [driving increased demand],” says Dave Short, senior vice president at REYNOLDS LAKE OCONEE. “There are people whose plans to buy or build on the lake were accelerated, and those who never had planned to purchase before.” Since March 1, the community has seen more than 300 transactions; 40 percent of the purchasers hail from Atlanta, but the community has homeowners from

47 states. The upward trend holds true in other lake and mountain destinations within easy driving distance from Atlanta. “We’ve seen an unprecedented volume of sales with buyers waiting in line for new inventory,” says Leigh Barnett of HARRY NORMAN, REALTORS. “This year we’ve had 71 sales on Lake Burton alone with 14 more currently under contract. Previously, our best year saw 52 sales.” The increased demand is driving prices. “Seven years ago, we had a property sell for around $1.728 million,” Barnett says. “It recently sold again for almost $3 million.”

Retail Resurgence

THERE’S LOTS TO BE EXCITED ABOUT at The Works, an 80-acre industrial complex being transformed into a mixed-use development on the Upper Westside. Among them is this month’s opening of BOBO INTRIGUING OBJECTS’ first direct-toconsumer location in The Makers Building. “It seemed the logical place to open my Atlanta flagship retail store,” says founder and designer Mark Sage of the 6,965-square-foot showroom. The brand joins Atlanta-based BALLARD DESIGNS in the development and will offer a mix of antiques, furniture, gifts and Sage’s new line of flooring. The development has been in the Selig Enterprises portfolio for 70 years, and the 27-acre first phase features food, beverage and retail offerings, and will soon include office and residential space. “One of the reasons that it’s so unique is the sheer scale,” says Malloy Peterson, the company’s senior vice president of development. “We want this to be a little bit of what’s best about Atlanta, all in one place.” New tenant announcements are forthcoming, but as of September, nearly 80 percent of the 78,000-square-foot Makers Building was leased.

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham I’VE SPENT THE PAST FEW WEEKENDS purging my closets, cabinets and basement of items that are no longer in style and likely never will be again, and I’ve been alarmed by the sometimes questionable taste I have exhibited over the years. At times, I have made good decisions, such as selecting Flora Danica as my china pattern and foregoing my grandmother’s damask table linen in favor of snappy Porthault prints. But just as often, my judgment has utterly failed me, leaving me with stuff that really doesn’t deserve a second chance. What was I thinking when, 35 years ago, I bought that pair of mauve Turkish-corner throw pillows to go with my peach-colored sofa, and why did I eventually put them away for safekeeping? Did I think mauve anything would ever come back into style once the 1980s had passed? I learned a valuable design lesson there—stick to classic colors if you want your furnishings to transcend the decades. The same goes for embellishments, which, generally speaking, should be kept to a minimum, unless, of course, you want your furnishings to fall out of fashion. Back in 1992, I just had to have those blowsy lampshades trimmed with wispy ruffles that were oh-so-romantic-looking, but today, they remind me of Victorian-era knickers. I should have stuck to plain card shades; they have much longer shelf lives. Let’s also talk prints, which, in my mind, are like tree rings: Their pattern reveals their age. I still have a bolt of psychedelic, paisley-patterned fabric that I purchased for my first Manhattan apartment back in 1967. It was quintessential Age of Aquarius. And I’ve hung onto that remnant of glazed floral chintz with the cherry red background, circa 1987. Some chintzes may be timeless, but others, like my remnant, are best left in the past. I guess it’s safe to say that any decoration that is too of-the-moment may have to wait a long time before becoming fashionable again. In other words, stick with timeless furnishings, and you’ll have far less stuff relegated to storage.

A LONGTIME FLY FISHERMAN and sailor, George McKerrow has enjoyed a lifelong love affair with the water. In fact, his aptly named restaurant, Canoe, one of many in his portfolio, is located along the banks of Atlanta’s Chattahoochee River. So, when a nearby 1-acre property hit the market, George and his wife, Ginair, planted a proverbial flag and hired architect Jordan Williams of Plexus R+D, builder Michael McLaughlin of Craft and interior designer Melanie Millner of The Design Atelier to design the modernist home they had long envisioned. “Our backyard is a canvas that moves with the weather and the time of the year.” says McKerrow. “It’s an ideal spot.” To capture those views while protecting against floods, the house is built atop concrete piers, its boomerang-like shape ensuring that the river can be seen from every room. On the street side, a sinuous stone wall conceals the piers, perfectly complementing the home’s white stucco and stained cypress exterior. 29

Outside the Box above Enclosed in glass, a fountain wall punctuates the cultured stone wall, offering just a peek at the flowing river on the other side. opposite The built-in walnut cabinetry, a stylish way to showcase pieces from the owners’ collection, adds a warm contrast to the cultured stone walls. “We thought it was important to bring the wood into the mix to get that warmth,” says designer Melanie Millner. “That was a key factor in making the space work.”

Interrupting the stone, a transparent wall of water offers visitors just a hint of the water on the other side of the residence. “The design allows the natural beauty of the site to unfold as one moves through the home,” says Williams. Indeed, the anticipation builds as the compressed interior entry stairway leads to the second-floor great room, which features soaring ceilings and tall doors and windows overlooking the water. Holding its own against the view, a floor-to-ceiling walnut Mondrian-like configuration of differently shaped cubbies contains treasured objects George and Ginair have collected through the years. “Rather than creating something that’s very regular and predictable, we wanted to create a more dynamic pattern,” says Williams. “What defines the river is that it’s constantly moving, so we didn’t want the architecture to be static.” The handsome installation is a unique focal point for contemporary but comfortable seating Millner selected to complement its warmth. Overhead, a trio of metal chandeliers pays homage to the disco ball hanging over the built-in bar in between the two exterior doorways. “Ginair has such a fun spirit and loves to entertain,” says Millner. 31

Daytime Drama The reflective, flat-front cabinetry by Poggenpohl grounds the kitchen, which features a cypress ceiling and porcelain tile flooring. Suspended from the ceiling, a large cabinet with frosted glass on both sides creates storage without interfering with the natural light from the bay window. The stools are from Design Within Reach.

The space is open to the kitchen, which was outfitted with sleek white Poggenpohl cabinetry and white marble countertops. Suspended from six steel stems, a heavy hanging cabinet with frosted glass doors and backing creates additional storage without obstructing the natural daylight. “We had to consider that when we framed the house, which was months before we hung the cabinets,” says McLaughlin. “It took a tremendous amount of brainpower and forethought.” That attention to every last detail is one of the many reasons George and Ginair are so happy in their new house. In fact, several months after the couple moved in, they hosted the entire design-build crew for a catered dinner, expressing their gratitude with a beautiful speech. “There were a whole lot of people who put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this place, and we wanted to thank them,” says McKerrow. “This has been a wonderful adventure, and we look forward to being here a long time.” See Resources, Back of Book. 35

Quiet Comfort A splash of green velvet brings a touch of the lush exterior into the zen-like master bedroom. “Ginair wanted a zen room where she could escape to and unwind from the day,” says Millner. “A cocoon to retreat to.” Upholstered in white leather, a modern chaise lounge offers a spot to relax and read in the ethereal, lightfilled master bedroom.

E

EAGER TO MOVE into his new three-bedroom unit in the posh Waldorf Astoria Residences—and on an extremely tight timeline—an international businessman turned to a trusted commodity in designer Robert Brown, who had designed his previous homes over the years. “We know him and his taste, and that’s always nice,” says Brown. “We kind of had carte blanche.” Not to mention a head start. Rather than reinventing the wheel, Brown retained many of the unit’s original finishes, which included oak flooring, luxurious bathrooms and a well-appointed kitchen with Calacatta Verde countertops and a polished marble backsplash. In fact, the designer had actually worked closely with the hotel’s original developer, as well as architecture firm Harrison Design, to select those finishes. Revisiting the building gave him an opportunity to play off these materials. In the front foyer, for example, an abstract painting hangs over an ebonized oak console table with an X base, coordinating perfectly with the existing black-and-white

marble inlay in the hardwood flooring. “It was a study in contrast,” explains Brown. Taking advantage of the barrel vault ceiling, a quartzite crystal chandelier adds another dimension. The palette flows into the main living area, a long pill-shaped space with curved walls on either end. In the center, a tailored linen sofa and leather chairs surround an iron and cement cocktail 46

table straddling a braided linen ottoman alongside a perforated brass side table. “It has an industrial edge that makes it a little more unique and not so uptight,” says Brown. It also plays off the brass accents throughout, which include sculptural table lamps, a candelabra chandelier over the living area and a dramatic brass and glass fixture over the ebonized wood din-

ing table at the far end of the room. Like all the art throughout, Brown hand-selected the bronze sculpture along the curved wall not far from the table. “I usually go shopping in Paris three or four times per year,” he says. Indeed, he scored the watercolor by Jacques Nestlé near the tub in the master bathroom at a French flea market too.

Effortlessly accommodating the client’s aggressive timeline, Brown and his team invited their client for the big unveiling, perfectly staging the space and playing music and lighting candles for the occasion. Brown was confident the space would appeal, and he was right. “He was amazed,” says Brown. “That’s always a nice high for us after a lot of hard work.” See Resources, Back of Book. 47

TO INTERIOR AND ARCHITECTURAL designer John Plaster of John Plaster & Company, design is a sort of language, allowing him to communicate through materials, fixtures and fabrics. That vocabulary helped him and his partner, Whit Wood, to understand each other on a deeper level after they moved into an 18th-floor condo overlooking Ardmore Park. “This is the first place that was new to both of us, and it was a cool way to get to know each other better,” Plaster says. Inspired by the clouds floating outside, the couple went with a celestial palette of whites in the living room, incorporating a pair of plush sofas and matching chairs underneath a pair of modern three-armed chandeliers that Plaster describes as “inherently playful.” Over one of the sofas, a large three-dimensional rattan wall sculpture adds another layer. “I wanted a really strong textural element there, and Whit found it,” Plaster says. “He has very good instincts.” With expansive views from every room, Plaster saw no need to treat them as sacred. Indeed, he mounted a painting of George Washington to the window frame in the main living area. And he placed an upholstered bench against the window in the breakfast area, pairing it with a set of wooden chairs with shearling seats and a

Bird’s-Eye View Floor-to-ceiling draperies filter the strong western sunlight in the open living room and kitchen, which has pristine white cabinetry with hardware by Holland & Sherry.

The vibe is moodier in the TV lounge, which was formerly a small bedroom. A tailored velvet sofa fits perfectly into a niche where the closet once was. Above it, a piece of reflective bronze made of plexiglass wraps the corner, mirroring the handsome walnut cabinetry on the opposite two walls. “We’re very high-low, and that makes it a place where we can live and not just gawk at,” Plaster says. “As long as the look and feel are correct, you get to invent your own world.” The eclectic mix has been carried into the master bedroom, where ’70s-era wooden lamps that belonged to Wood’s grandfather flank a streamlined upholstered headboard with nailhead trim. Painted Japanese panels span the length of the wall over the bed, adding texture and interest. After work, the couple often lounge on the sofas in the living room, the sunset casting a warm glow when filtered through the floor-to-ceiling draperies. It’s their time to unwind, talk about their day and enjoy the story they’ve created together through design. “We’re definitely a good team,” Plaster says. “It’s fun to have a partner who you can geek out on design with.” See Resources, Back of Book. 55

LIFE

END NOTE

THANKSGIVING REVISIONS DOES PINOT NOIR TASTE as smooth and silky from a plastic cup when served with a roasted turkey leg and enjoyed while socially distanced around a firepit? Can one virtually run the Fourth of July Peachtree Road Race on Thanksgiving Day and log a credible time without actually slogging up Heartbreak Hill during the blanket of summer humidity? In addition to chomping on state fair food and breaking world record race times, Thanksgiving 2020 is likely to bring a host of changes to our traditions. For some, Thanksgiving will mean setting the table with fine china and crystal after months of curbside pickup during stay-at-home measures. Others may prepare a fourcourse feast—even if loved ones can’t travel far and the table is only set for two. Some are considering activities instead of gathering for a meal. A hike and picnic lunch with turkey sandwiches might be a peaceful way to spend the day, and one that negates having to wash dishes. Since we’ve been home for eight months, being home for the holidays may not sound as enticing as it once did.

64

However, there’s still something grounding about it—something that binds us to the people and the place; something that gives us strength and stamina to continue lumbering through this unprecedented and tumultuous year. My hunch is that holiday tables will be set more beautifully than ever before as immediate family gathers together in thanks for the blessings of one another, and for having persevered through this year. We might not know until the last minute whether we’ll enjoy the Macy’s Day Parade or cheer our favorite football team to victory, but we can definitely plan to take a walk in our neighborhood, say hi to friends along the way and uplift those who dare to fry a turkey in a Big Green Egg. I’m relishing everything about the holidays: decorations, food and creative ways to safely connect with friends and family. As for the best way to enjoy pinot noir? I’m going to walk 6.2 miles and wave to my neighbors, then I’ll pour two glasses: one in plastic and one in crystal. After all, everyone deserves a double pour this year. Cheers to happy holidays!

WELCOME TO THE 2020 HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS SHOWHOUSE, a gracious shingle-style, Nantucket cottage by Harrison Design, KBD Development & Construction and The Jane Group. The 6,500-square-foot residence is situated in Ivy Ridge, an enclave of new luxury homes near Atlanta’s prominent shopping, financial and health centers. The two-story home features six bedrooms and six full and two half bathrooms, plus another bedroom on the unfinished 2,400-square-foot terrace level. The design of the residence marries the Arts and Crafts style of a 1950s beach house with the distinctive roof and dormers seen in Dutch Colonial homes and a formal limestone Italianate entry. A signature architectural element is a grand staircase with floor-to-ceiling corner windows that offer 180-degree views, including those of the swimming pool. Another standout feature is a barrel vault ceiling that unites the kitchen and living room. Its gentle slope, slight paneling and low coffers bring a refined ambience to the home’s gathering spaces.

The Jane Group selected finishes, such as European white oak floors, steel doors and windows and a warm palette with creamy and taupe whites that elevate the elegance in the transitional family home. Bluestone floors from the Netherlands, floating vanities and hand-formed tile in the shower afford an air of casual sophistication in the master bathroom. Details that evoke romance and character include the cantilevered exterior, a garden courtyard and a hidden doorway to the study. Flexible rooms, including a substantial suite over the three-car garage, allow for an easy transition from bedrooms to home offices and hangouts for kids. A butler’s pantry and scullery provide ample room for holiday baking, caterers and wine storage in the open kitchen. Its L-shaped layout maximizes daylight and the flow to the covered porch for year-round indoor-outdoor living. The showhouse will feature the work of top Southeastern interior designers. —Lori Johnston

Judy Bentley of Interior Views serves as our 2020 Honorary Chair, and we are also honored to partner once again with our beneficiary, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, to support their commitment to provide specialized healthcare for children. During the run of showhouse, don’t miss a lineup of inspiring holiday events, including chef and floral demonstrations, holiday entertaining, candlelight tours and more. As you tour the showhouse, we encourage you to take inspiration and holiday spirit from the Atlanta design community’s incomparable talent.

Judy Bentley, Honorary Chair

Joey Martin, Honorary Jr. Chair

As the Honorary Chair of the 2020 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse & Marketplace, I welcome your visit to our design industry’s year-end salute. Our talents and energy have risen above our national crisis to create visual respite from this year’s chaos as we celebrate the summit of beauty in home design.

In January 2020, 15-year-old Joey Martin began having severe headaches. She visited Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite where doctors diagnosed her with an astrocytoma brain tumor. Surgery was performed to remove 85 percent of the tumor, and she spent two weeks in intensive care and two weeks in the rehabilitation unit to relearn how to walk and talk. Recovery continued at home in February and she began her 68-week chemotherapy protocol in March. She is a straight-A student at Smyrna’s Campbell High School and also a member of their International Baccalaureate magnet program, an avid club soccer player, Major League Baseball fan and loves country music. She and her family are so grateful for the care and expertise she has received from the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center doctors, nurses and staff.

As a designer, I would like to thank all of the designers, craftspeople, architect, builder, manufacturers, volunteers and showrooms that have supported this wonderful Showhouse. A big thank you to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles for this recognition and to each of you for your visit, which helps support Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Much appreciation and enjoy!

Floralis’ focus is on developing a customized solution that fits the needs of each individual client. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. This attention to detail, innovative design approach and project management expertise is what differentiates Floralis from other firms.

alerie Garrett Interiors is known for creating homes with elevated Southern style and infused with fresh perspective. Blending traditional and transitional styles, her designs create sophisticated spaces that come alive through the connections they foster: stylish and understated, quiet and tasteful. Principal Valerie Garrett has called Georgia home for more than 35 years, and opened her design firm 25 years ago. She believes that a sense of place is critical to ensuring that a home feels authentic, saying, “I believe good design captures the illusive, the essence of the individual and the home, and enables us to bring it to life.” This year, the Macon-based firm expanded into the Atlanta area and the team shared that they have been welcomed to the city in ways they never imagined. They are thrilled to share their signature style in the 2020 Home for the Holidays Designer Showhouse.
