Mr Bruce Hemphill, Director of Athletics Bruce Hemphill is in his fourth year as athletic director for McNeese after the former associate AD at the University of Wyoming and assistant to the AD at the University of North Carolina became the ninth athletics director in school history in August of 2013. The first three years under Hemphill was an eventful one as McNeese’s athletic programs excelled both on the playing field and in the classroom. Academically, McNeese set a school record in the 2013-14 sportsseason by having five players named as the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports. The program also led all conference schools in the 2014 spring semester with 21 student-athletes compiling a perfect 4.0 grade point average. And Cowgirl softball player Alana DiVittorio became just the second player in the sport to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors. McNeese received the Southland Conference Academic Progress Award for the 2014-15 for posting the highest APR score in the league. McNeese football was the only team recognized from the Southland Conference as the recipient of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association (FCS ADA) APR Award. Athletically, McNeese finished fourth out of 13 teams in the Commisioner’s Cup Standings - the highest placing since finishing fourth in the 2002-03 season. It’s also the sixth straight year McNeese has been the highest finishing school among Louisiana SLC league teams. Ten of the school’s 16 sports programs finished fifth or higher in their respective sport standings. In the 2013-14 sports season, McNeese finished fifth out of the 14 SLC schools for the 2013-14 SLC Commissioner’s Cup standings. The Cowgirl softball team won a school record 40 games en route to its second consecutive league championship and the Cowboy football team won 10 games and qualified for its league-record 15th FCS playoff appearance. In addition, the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball, all qualified for the league postseason tournament. During his two years as Director of Athletics, Hemphill worked with the McNeese administration to gain the support of legislation, boosters and private donors for the new $44 million Health and Human Performance Complex that will also become the home for McNeese men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. He also led efforts to improve Cowboy Stadium and complete the final phase of the Jack V. Doland Field House renovation project. The Sulphur, La., native has 27 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won All-Academic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physical education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. DREW FITZGERALD Head Coach • Second Season as HC (Eigth Overall) Texas A&M (2001)

The McNeese women’s soccer team will enter its second year of a new era when it steps on the field during the fall as Drew Fitzgerald and the Cowgirls look to continue to grow and gain succes as a team in his second year as head coach. Fitzgerald made immediate progress in just his first season at the helm of the Cowgirl program. He became just the second head coach in McNeese soccer history to lead a team to the conference tournament and win a match. After a pre-season poll tabbed the team to finish 10th in conference, the squad finished 6th in conference with a 9-10-1 overall record, wrapping up the season with three All-Southland selections, one All-Tournament selection, and two SLC All-Academic Honors. LaRicci became just the third Cowgirl in program history to net 10 or more goals in a season. Kamryn Koch did so three different times while Allison Arnold accomplished the feat twice. McNeese soccer placed three on the 2016 All-Louisiana Women’s Soccer team as juniors Gabi D’Alesandro and Savannah LaRicci earned first-team honors while senior Bettina Brulhart was named to the honorable mention list. Senior Bettina Brulhart etched her name in the history books once more as she became the first McNeese women’s soccer player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American Fitzgerald returned to Lake Charles in 2014 and was a key factor in helping revamp a program that had scored one conference victory a season prior to his arrival. Under his guidance, McNeese tallied six league wins for a fourth place finish that helped propel them to an appearance in the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament. In 2015, McNeese registered six victories including wins over Sun Belt opponents ULM and Texas State. Fitzgerald helped mentor Southland Conference and LSWA Freshman of the Year Bettina Brulhart as well as all-league second-team pick Gabi D’Alesandro, who led the team in every offensive category. In four seasons at Missouri State, Fitzgerald helped lead the Bears to multiple Missouri Valley Conference tournament appearances as well as develop the program’s first professional draftee, Nia Williams, who was selected by FC Kansas City in the fourth round of the 2012 NWSL draft. In his first season with the Bears, he helped the program to a 12-5-2 overall record and a second-place finish and a MVC Tournament finals appearance. Along the way, he assisted for a team that went unbeaten in 11-straight matches, had a seven-match win streak and won four-straight 1-0 shutouts, all firsts in team history. Fitzgerald is no stranger to the “Cowgirl Way” having spent four years (2005-2008) as an assistant coach under current head coach Scooter Savoie. During his previous tenure, Fitzgerald helped McNeese to an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006 and a Southland Conference Championship in 2007. He also aided the team in reaching the Southland Conference Tournament finals in 2008. He also served as the Barbe High School boy’s soccer team head coach in 2007 and 2008. At McNeese, Fitzgerald played a vital role in the success of the Cowgirl program and even helped develop the program’s first McNeese Hall of Famer, Kamryn Koch. Koch became the all-time leading scorer as well as being named 2008 Louisiana and Southland Conference Player of the Year. She was also recognized as an NSCAA/Adidas Scholar Team member. Fitzgerald was the head coach of the Texas A&M men’s club soccer team before landing at McNeese. As head coach of A&M’s club team from 2004 until 2005, he led them to the NIRSA National Championship and an undefeated season in his first year. His coaching career began as the head coach for the Allen Academy boy’s soccer squad where he helped lead his team to a TAPPS Class 2 State Championship. Fitzgerald earned a B.S. in Journalism (2001) and an M.S. in Sport Management (2005) from Texas A&M. He also received his NSCAA National Diploma, Goalkeeper I & II diploma and the USSF National “D” License. Drew’s wife, Ashleigh, currently serves as the head volleyball coach at McNeese.

NICK WHITING Assistant Coach • First Season West Florida (2007) In 2016, as his first year as assistant coach, Nick Whiting helped guide the Cowgirls to a 9-10-1 record, finishing 6th in the conference and out-performing all pre-season polls. The overall season record was the best for the Cowgirls since 2008 and Whiting comes to Lake Charles after spending the last season as an assistant at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Whiting helped guide the Ragin’ Cajuns to eight victories and an appearance in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. During the course of the season, the Cajuns broke a school record with a seven game unbeaten streak. Before landing in Lafayette, Whiting spent five years at Lees-McRae (N.C.) College, including the last three as head coach. During his three seasons as head coach at Lees-McRae, the Bobcats claimed back-to-back Conference Carolinas regular-season championships in 2012 and 2013, while serving as an assistant on the Bobcats’ 2011 team that claimed the conference title and reached the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. In his three-year career at Lees-McRae, Whiting guided the Bobcats to a 29-23-4 record and an impressive 23-7-1 record in league matches. During the 2013 season, the Bobcats were ranked No. 10 nationally among Division II programs in the NCAA and NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Southeast Region polls. Whiting’s defense was one of the toughest in the nation while producing a shutout streak that lasted over 837 minutes. In 2012, Lees-McRae put together a 12-5-2 overall, including a 10-1 mark in league play. Eight players earned all-conference honors that season, including senior Mary Dorn, who was named the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year as well as the league’s Scholar Athlete of the Year. Whiting served as the Bobcats’ assistant coach for two seasons, helping Lees-McRae compile a 27-11-3 overall record over that span, including a 13-5-3 mark in 2011. Whiting played a pivotal role in the Bobcats’ success that season, helping Lees-McRae post a program-record 11-1 mark in conference play en route to the school’s first-ever outright league title and the program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. He has mentored 20 all-conference players over the last tfour seasons, including the 2011 Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year (Thornton) and the 2012 Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year (Dorn). He has also been an integral component in the Bobcats’ recruiting efforts since his arrival in 2010, welcoming 29 new student-athletes into the women’s soccer program during his tenure. Prior to his appointment as the Bobcats’ assistant, Whiting spent the 2009 season at Catawba College, where he helped the Indians to a 13-5-2 record, a sixth-place ranking in the NSCAA Southeast Regional poll and a trip to the South Atlantic Conference semifinals. Whiting’s primary responsibility at Catawba was recruiting, a role in which he helped the Indians sign seven players on National Signing Day. He also served as the goalkeepers coach, where his players recorded nine shutouts and a 0.86 goals against average. Whiting also served as a graduate assistant coach at Western Carolina University during their Southern Conference championship season in 2008. During that campaign, Western Carolina advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they met North Carolina in the opening round, while registering a pivotal victory over No. 20-ranked South Carolina. Prior to his time at WCU, Whiting spent a year at Jacksonville University as a media relations assistant for both the men and women’s soccer teams, as well as several other sports. Whiting is a 2007 graduate of the University of West Florida, having earned his Bachelor 10
