eptember means one thing in London: design. The London Design Festival covers a growing number of events all over town, spawning several separate Design Districts and countless events, installations and projects in addition to the main fairs. At Decorex, designjunction, 100% Design and Focus/18, exhibits from new and established designers from the UK and all over the world will descend on London's design-hungry audiences and redefine the aesthetics of the year to come. Expect to see new shapes, colourschemes and ideas in everything from furniture and textiles to small accessories, ceramics, technology and decorative objects. Of the many themes and trends emerging, our favourites are colour – whether bright and bold or intriguing sludgy shades that aren't eaily categorised – and an angular, 80s aesthetic of tubular shapes, pastel shades and asymmetry, as well as a fearless world of elaborate, busy prints for textiles and wallpaper and a focus on quirky details. Also this month is London Open House Weekend, an opportunity to see inside buildings you're not normally allowed inside. Among them are some amazing residential interiors, so study the programme closely. And enjoy design month..

BLOOD WEDDING 4-23 September OMN IBUS THEATRE

What happens when it’s too late to escape? Will fate cut you down? Will you ever breathe easily again? Lorca’s 1932 folk tragedy is deftly pulled into sharp focus in a modern-day London. Aristocrats by BRIAN FRIEL

Sad but intensely watchable, this Irish family saga is a hit for the Donmar By PENDLE HARTE

A

ristocrats is one of Brian Friel’s lesserperformed plays, often seen as a difficult one. And though it’s certainly bleak, Es Devlin's production of this Chekovian family drama, set in a decaying Big House in Donegal, is engaging and full of comic moments – despite its ultimate sadness. We open as the family has all returned to visit their elderly,

bedridden father, who can be heard issuing instructions to his dutiful daughter Judith (Eileen Walsh) through a newly installed baby monitor (lots of comic potential here). In the house are his other daughters Alice (Elaine Cassidy)– an alcoholic, visiting from London with her husband – and Claire (Aisling Loftus), a talented though thwarted pianist who still lives at home and whose depression is also managed by dutiful Judith. Their mother, we learn, died at the age of 47. The star of the show is David Dawson, captivating as Casimir, the

Lovely Irish sentence constructions and beautiful vocabularly

son visiting from Hamburg, where nobody believes that he is married to Helga with three sons. His is a nervy presence, all twitchy mannerisms and intense conversation, but he’s likeable and very watchable despite his delusions, and his languages characterise the play, with its lovely Irish constructions and beautiful vocabulary. Words like ‘turgid’ and ‘frivolous’ and ‘thwarted’ and ‘absorb’ stand out – the latter used several times, showing how layers of dysfunction and historical grievances are accepted – absorbed – into family lore. Characters retreat to the back of the stage when they’re not in the scene – there’s nowhere to hide. It’s a brilliant device to have an anthropologist in the midst, and Tom Hoffnung (helpfully translated by Casimir as ‘hope’ in German) is a visiting American professor, writing a book on the the Irish aristocracy and inviting everyone to share their stories. It’s a stylish production, beautifully acted throughout and a moving, meaningful story.

he ever-popular Open House London returns for its 26th year, with every London borough participating. This annual celebration of London’s buildings, places and spaces offers everybody the opportunity to explore the city’s most compelling architecture and design as more than 800 buildings of all kinds – many of them never otherwise open to the public – open their doors for the duration of a weekend. The programme includes a schedule of neighbourhood walks and architect-led tours, all of it completely free. But remember to get to your destination early: there may be a queue. This year’s programme explores how the new London that has been emerging over the past 20 years is finally coming to fruition. New buildings, new kinds of buildings, new districts, new approaches to regeneration, women taking a leading role in making London, engineering excellence underpinning the capital’s successful reinvention – these all show how good design can make London a more enjoyable and vibrant city in which to live and work. Rory Olcayto, Open City’s director said: “From Hackney Wick to Park Royal, Wembley to Nine Elms and the ever-changing Kings Cross, Open House is shining a light on the places shaping the capital with striking landmark buildings and new approaches to town planning. The cubic futurism of the American Embassy, Here East’s Day-glo ‘fun palace’ and the cool, sculptural qualities of the Aga Khan’s HQ are real stand-outs this year.”

HW: It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and always thought my prints and illustrations could look amazing on rugs and bed sheets. I always have so many ideas and I’m so happy that I’ve had this opportunity with Habitat, whose homeware I’ve always loved! PH: Where did you begin with the collection for Habitat? HW: I went into the Shrimps archive and picked out my favourite doodles and prints that I’d always thought could work perfectly for homeware. The colour combination of red and pink is one that I keep returning to,

and is very present in this collaboration for Habitat - it is quintessentially Shrimps! PH: What is your own home like? And your dream home? HW: My home has lots of colour and pattern, however I would say that it is not over the top, there is still a feeling of simplicity which I think is important for creating a sense of calm. I love particular colour combinations in both fashion and homeware, red and pink is one that I’ve definitely used a lot in my house and my collections, including our Habitat collection. My dream home would be a bigger version of my current home, with more tiles and more outdoor space, I love the feeling of greenery coming into a house, tiled indoor courtyards are my favourite thing, I would love one of those - very Italian! FASHION • Q&A

PH: Your background is in textiles. How are fashion textiles different from interiors ones? HW: To me they aren't that different, interior textiles always inspire my fashion collections, and vice versa. PH: What are your favourite pieces from the collection? HW: I love the Doodle rug, it is one of my favourite Shrimps prints and just looks so beautiful as a rug. PH: Tell us about the creatures and characters. HW: The characters are all from my imagination and I have been making them up and drawing them for as long as I can remember. The Doodle print was literally created from my drawings on a piece of paper that I had been doodling on over a few weeks, I often doodle in important meetings. At the time I was researching nursery rhymes and the work of the artist Paula Rego, these doodles were definitely, subconsciously inspired by that.

Light Therapy Acne Mask

A

chieve your best skin yet in as little as one week with Neutrogena®. The skincare visionary is revolutionising the way we look after our complexion with the Light Therapy Acne Mask, a wearable LED device that delivers red (to reduce inflammation) and blue (to reduce bacteria) wavelengths deep into the skin to disrupt the acne cycle. Though the mask is fairly cumbersome to wear and makes the wearer look like an illuminated welder, the clever technology behind the plastic facade targets acne-causing bacteria without harsh chemicals, reducing size and redness of breakouts while allowing skin to heal. It’s not as strong as strong as the lights used in dermatologist’s clinics, but the the portable and practical mask can be worn every day at home. Research showed that that the mask doesn’t just make users look better, it can make them feel better, too. In the same clinical study, 77 percent of users said that they had higher self-esteem after 12 weeks of daily sessions wearing the mask, with 69 percent reporting that they felt more comfortable interacting with others. All in all, 79 percent of the study subjects agreed that using the mask had improved their overall acne-related quality of life. Here’s to putting your best face forward. Game FA C E Marek Waclawczyk at MW Aesthetics shares his expertise on permanent makeup

T

he secret to permanent makeup is “Less is more” and that is the way I work. Permanent makeup is not about being fully made up 24/7; it’s simply about looking your best all the time with zero effort on your part. I have undergone extensive permanent makeup training, much of which has been based around creating a natural look.

The Value…

I

know there is no one-sizefits-all solution to cosmetic tattooing, which is why I fully consult with my clients to get their style just right. In permanent makeup nothing is left to chance and I operate a strict consultation and perfection procedure to ensure what you end up with, is exactly what you wanted. I never use stencils and design an individual shape and finish through freehand pre-drawing and tattooing, for a result that truly complements my client’s face.

Treatments Available…

I

offer all of the latest permanent makeup treatments, from permanent eyeliner to permanent lips and super realistic eyebrows. My male clients enjoy scalp micropigmentation for hair loss, which is perfect for achieving that groomed, city look.

HEALTH & BEAUTY • INTERVIEW

Yourself DISCOVER

We meet Julie Montagu, a yogi, nutrition expert and renowned wellness entrepreneur who knows a thing or two about managing stress as a mama…

Wo r d s K AT Y G I L L E T T Photography STEPHEN BANKS

A

merican wellness entrepreneur Julie Montagu might have married into British aristocracy (her husband, Luke, is also known as Viscount Hitchingbrooke, as his father is the Earl of Sandwich), but she’s had her fair share of life challenges. She’s raising four children, has helped her husband through a prescription drug dependency, and financially supported the family – but one of the ways she found to cope with the stress was through yoga, something she’s become very, very good at. These days she’s a very successful yoga and nutrition teacher, and founder of Whole Self Yoga, which offers 200hour teacher training courses, as well as short courses and retreats in her family’s fabulous, historic estate at Mapperton, Dorset. As she prepares to run her first fourday restorative retreat in November, we chat with Julie about the true meaning of happiness, being healthy, and what we can expect from her now-famous yoga classes.

IN TOUGH TIMES, JULIE FOUND STRENGTH IN YOGA

Q Your yoga classes have become incredibly popular in London. In fact, Cosmopolitan wrote: “Among London’s taut-buttocked set, the name Julie Montagu is talked

about with the sort of reverence reserved for the Dalai Lama”. That’s quite a pat on the back. What do you think it is about your classes that have made them so successful? A I’m not really sure why they are so popular but perhaps it’s because I just teach authentically. I teach from the heart, I tell real-life stories in my classes and pretty much hug everyone who comes. My classes are high energy, very upbeat during the beginning and middle and then are grounding and slower towards the ends just before savasana, when you can float away – do nothing, speak to no one, no one speaks to you – for just a few wonderful minutes. Q What started you down the path of yoga and nutrition in the first place? A After my fourth child was born, I was exhausted both mentally and physically, and I knew I needed to do something and fast! It felt like every day was the same day. My skin was bad, my energy low and I was definitely sinking into a hole of despair. So I went to my first Bikram yoga class and in one day became obsessed with it! From Bikram, I started to then explore other types of yoga and fell madly in love with Vinyasa Flow yoga. And, really, once I started on the yoga path, I became obsessed with how much it could give me energy, how it could boost my mood and just – overall – make me feel better. I’m so passionate about yoga and all that it can do for you physically, mentally and spiritually. And the same goes for nutrition. During my yoga training, I became very active in learning more about foods and how they can help heal you but also energise you. I needed both A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

of those things, so I took an online course through Cornell University and that really kick-started my path into nutrition. Q Why do you think having a yoga practise is so important for a modern mama? A I think as mums we give so much energy to everyone else and put ourselves last on the list. So by taking time out to find space for yoga, we finally get to re-connect with who we are and sometimes even re-discover our true, authentic self. Yoga is so much more than just the poses – it’s a release and a boost at the same time. Q Today we’re often told to “think positively” and believe in the Law of Attraction to find happiness. What do you think about this? A I personally believe that happiness is like a muscle – you have to work at it. It doesn’t just knock on your door one day and say: “Hey, I’m here to stay”. I wish it were that

JULIE FELL IN LOVE WITH VINYASA FLOW YOGA

easy. Happiness is something that we’re in control of and we have to create. What makes you happy? Do more of that. Is it writing, pottery, designing, yoga, nutrition, exercise, and so on? It’s one thing to SAY what makes you happy, it’s another thing to actually do it. We must continue to do the things that make us happy. Q What are the highlights of this upcoming trip to Dorset? A Spending time in fresh air, beautiful countryside, cosy fires, plant-based meals and wonderful yoga and mindful crafting sessions!

JULIE MONTAGU PREVIOUSLY STARRED IN LADIES OF LONDON

“Slotting in at least 10 minutes a day for yourself is a must in my book”

Q What bits are you most excited about? A Mapperton is such a beautiful place to visit and rather far from any main roads, so it’s very unspoilt. So I’m excited to show people this unspoilt part of England and be able to offer the guests our newly renovated bedrooms and bathrooms, plus a gorgeous and newly renovated 17th-century Coach House, which is where we’ll be doing the yoga and the mindful crafting session (where we’ll be making smudge sticks, luna candles and bath melts). Q What are the most important elements of self-care that modern mamas must fit into their daily schedule, in your opinion? A Slotting in at least 10 minutes a day for you. It’s a must in my book. Whether that’s a walk outside for 10 minutes, or breathing, or meditating, or listening to your favourite podcast – the thing that must happen is 10 minutes for you (minimum) every single day. Just you with you, taking care of you. Q How do you find it at the moment, juggling your own busy working schedule, self-care routines and

family responsibilities? A Well, I must admit that I rarely ever sit down! I’m constantly moving from one place to the next BUT I make sure I schedule in my self-care every single day without fail. If it’s scheduled in, I do it and nothing gets in the way of creating space for me. Because from this space is where I re-energise; mind clears, emotions stabilise and creativity kicks in. Q What tips and advice do you have for modern, busy, working mamas? A Self-care FIRST, then FAMILY and then WORK. You put your self-care first and you’ll be a better, more energised mother, wife, coworker – but you have to prioritise you and get into the habit of doing so. Q Other than your retreats, what else is in the pipeline for you? A I’ve just launched my new School of Yoga – Whole Self Yoga, which offers 200-hour yoga teacher training but it’s so much more than that – it’s about re-discovering your whole self and learning the tools to keep you motivated, inspired and caring for yourself. Whole Self also has short courses, too, and I’m currently working on some online courses to offer, so watch this space!

T H E R E T R E AT Julie Montagu has begun hosting yoga retreats in her family home, Mapperton House & Gardens in West Dorset. The first, in November, has already sold out, but there are two more happening this year from 29 November to 2 December, and then again from 31 January to 3 February. She will offer her signature style yoga classes, meditation, long walks, craft workshops, plant-based food, as well as accommodation. Prices start from £695.

days hold for me. The great thing about CoolSculpting™ is that there is no downtime.

THE FIRST FIVE DAYS:

THE

Coolsculpting Diaries

I

’ve always eaten well and exercised but there's still those stubborn areas that just refuse to budge. So, when I learned about the amazing benefits of CoolSculpting ™, I was intrigued all-be-it slightly sceptical. Could this none-surgical treatment truly eliminate my fat like it claimed? I decided to document my experience at The Glasshouse Clinic.

CONSULTATION – MAY 2018: Lizzie specialises in body sculpting. She starts by asking me about the areas that concern me the most. Like many women, it's the love handles. The thought of standing in front of a complete stranger as she pinches and evaluates my fatty areas sounds like the stuff of nightmares, but her excitement is so contagious that after

a while I feel nothing but elation. My treatment plan is put together and I'm back in my clothes and walking out the door 30minutes later.

TREATMENT MAY 2018: Each area is treated with 35 minutelong cycle. A thin, gel pad is placed over the lower abdominal area, where the Cool Advantage™ cup will sit. Next, the Cool Advantage™ cup is put on area before suction is applied. I feel some mild discomfort for the first 5-10 minutes. It feels like someone is pinching the area hard, although this disappears and the final 25 minutes are a breeze. Immediately after the treatment, the skin is cold, pink and slightly numb. The massage is the most uncomfortable part of the whole treatment; it’s a strange sensation. I'm excited to see what the next few

“I notice my once snug jeans now fit perfectly ”

We hear how one patient gets on with CoolSculpting™ at The Glasshouse Clinic Wimbledon

The area is slightly tender and sensitive in the first week. The skin is still a little numb on top, but underneath you can feel the magic happening. It feels like I have completed an intense abdominal work out the day before. At times, I experience a weird, tingling feeling that makes me want to scratch the treated areas. I have some swelling afterwards, but this is really and may last for a couple of weeks.

WEEK TWO All the swelling has gone and I feel completely back to normal, I must admit I can’t quite see what is going to happen now or how it is going to happen. Lizzie continues to reassure me to ‘hold tight’ and I will see change as I head towards 12 weeks.

WEEK TWELVE It's time for the review. I notice my once snug jeans now fit perfectly. At the review, Lizzie places my before and after pictures side-by-side. The transformation is much greater than I had anticipated. The love handles I previously loathed have gone and my flanks are nipped in. All in all, quite amazing. In fact, I have recommended my friends to The Glasshouse Clinic. If you too would love to say goodbye to your squidgy bits then get in touch with The Glasshouse Clinic for a complimentary consultation. Quote ‘cool’ for a 10% discount. Healthy Habits

Keep that holiday feeling going with these simple tips from GP Dr Fhorkan Uddin at Parkside Hospital KEEPING FIT We all know the value of regular exercise and know how good we feel after it, but it is often hard to kick start a fitness routine after the summer holidays. Take some time now to plan ways to fit exercise into your week, which will avoid your schedule falling by the wayside after week one. While 30 minutes five times a week is the gold standard, do what you can, and when time is short, focus on intensity. Quality is more important than quantity. The important thing is to raise your heart rate.

felt before. If you don’t feel ill but just want to talk through a health concern with a professional at a time to suit you, consider visiting a Private GP. Appointments are usually longer than for an NHS GP, and they can cost as little as £95 for a 20-minute appointment with a fully-qualified general practitioner. As Private GPs don’t have the same time pressure, they have more time to devote to your concerns. They can prescribe any medication you may need, refer you onto a specialist or for further diagnostic tests if you need them.

SORT OUR THOSE HEALTH NIGGLES

CONSIDER A HEALTH MOT

As we age, small worries about your health can emerge and aches and pains may become more common so that you even forget how you

If you want a more in-depth health check, consider a health screen, which can help identify ways in which you can improve your health

problems you may have or may be likely to develop. Screening can detect diseases early, so they are easier to treat and more curable - such as with cancers. They can also highlight a person at risk of developing a disease so steps can be taken to stop the development and maintain the person's health, as with diabetes. There is no firm recommendation of when to have a health screen, some people find a significant birthday, or life event such as retirement or children's weddings, the motivation to have a health screen. Typically people have their first screen at 40 and repeat it every 2-3 years. There are various types of private health screens to suit you and you don’t need a referral from your GP.

QUIT

the Gym With Fitness Superstore you can forgo the hefty gym membership and the packedout changing rooms. Here’s why you should train at home

M

odern life means many of us are too busy. With work, family commitments and social gatherings, fitness can often take a back seat. For many of us, a gym membership can often be money down the drain as life gets in the way of any sort of regular training regime. This is why more and more people are opting to train at home. Proving more practical and effective, here are just a few reasons why…

SAVE MONEY

The cost of a gym membership adds up over time and we often don’t get the full benefit of what we’re paying for. When you train at home, you can choose key pieces to suit your budget, needs and preferences, which means a great investment. Once you have what you need, you can add to your personal collection as and when you want to, rather than pay out on a monthly basis to pay for an unused membership. There are fantastic fitness equipment options to suit all budgets, as well as plenty of functional pieces that can really complement all training programmes, such as resistance bands, kettlebells, dumbbells and medicine balls.

completely. Instead, you can use this time to get the most out of your workout, and you’ll feel better knowing you haven’t skipped a session.

YOU DON’T NEED LOADS OF SPACE

Not everyone has the luxury of lots of space. And even if you do, you might not want to dedicate masses to fitness. Fitness equipment for the home continues to evolve to make it more and more practical for using in smaller spaces. Foldaway treadmills, rowing machines, compact multi-gyms

and adjustable dumbbells (which provide you with many weights in a single pair of dumbbells) are just a few examples of excellent space-efficient options. Want to try the equipment for yourself before you buy? Just pop in to one of the 10 UK Fitness Superstores, or check them out online. Who knows, this time in six months, you may wonder how you ever got by without your own fitness equipment at home. fitness-superstore.co.uk

“The The cost of a gym up ” membership adds up”

SAVE TIME

A major stumbling block for a lot of gymgoers is the distance. Missing occasional sessions because you’re too tired to travel there can quickly become a slippery slope. With a home gym, this barrier is removed

WINE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MONTH By BERRY BROS. & RUDD

2016 Berry Bros. & Rudd Chilean Sauvignon Blanc  £9.95 For a thirst-slaking apéritif, this is a dazzlingly fresh white, showcasing just how good a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc can be. Aroma: Just-mown grass, green apples. Palate: Vibrant, zesty, with notes of kiwi. Try with Lemon Sole.

2014 Ch. Potensac, Médoc  £22.50 The season’s gloriously robust flavours call for a wine with power and poise: this Claret fills the brief. Aroma: Spicy green peppers, blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry. Palate: Black fruit, sweetness and earthy spice. Try with: Beef carpaccio.

Hambledon, Classic Cuvée, Sparkling, Hampshire, England  £29.95 Hambledon Vineyard is the location of the first English commercial vineyard. This wine's leesageing imparts biscuity notes, adding structure to the first impressions, which recall English orchard fruit, yellow fruits and quince. ABSOLUTELY eats out…

“The hanger steak is tender and lean, and it’s clear why Arlo’s is a popular hangout for steak lovers”

Raise the steaks

Arlo’s in Battersea sells succulent steaks and mouth-watering side dishes

A

B y JEREMEY RANDRUP

rlo’s in Battersea was founded on a simple passion: a lifelong love of beef. And they do it very, very well. As we arrive, we are welcomed into the cosy, American diner-like interior by the attentive and friendly staff. We begin with an English Garden cocktail and snack on a plate of deliciously spiced Halloumi while we peruse the menu.

Arlo’s boasts a large selection of steaks, from Bavette to Rib Eye - and after some deliberation we opted for the hanger steak. It arrives pink in the middle and I am sold from the first, succulent bite. Both tender and lean, it’s clear why Arlo’s is a popular hangout for steak lovers – the whole dish bursts with flavour. For an extra kick I pair it with the signature Burning Bear sauce. Arlo’s steaks are delicious in their own right, but the experience wouldn’t be complete without

indulging in the wide selection of sides and alternative dishes to accompany the meat. We opt for the perfectly crisp chargrilled broccoli and a thick and creamy macaroni cheese that is perfect for taking some of the kick out of the Burning Bear sauce. As we eat, it becomes clear that Arlo’s have plenty to offer in addition to their distinctive steaks. We wash down this feast with a welcome glass of Malbec. I couldn’t leave without attempting the ice cream Eton mess, a vibrant and colourful bowl of delicious sweetness. The coolness from the ice cream and lightness of the cream was just what we needed after a meat-heavy meal. Going into Arlo’s, I knew I would be getting a succulent steak, yet I left pleasantly surprised: there is so much more to this steakhouse than that. For a restaurant that, perhaps surprisingly, caters to veggies and vegans as well as meat lovers, it’s a perfect place to catch up with friends and know you will be getting a fabulous and filling meal to boot. just small sections (we always get asked back to do more anyway). What makes the difference is the experience of our staff. Whether our labourers or me, it’s the years of learning that count – working out how to do something in a way that is cost-effective but achieves the result. Other companies come and go and make empty promises – but we deliver – ask our customers. We’re always there to discuss how the project is going and suggest what will work. I’ve worked in various areas of the country during my career but it’s the most recent ones working in London that have been the most exciting. With space so expensive it’s so important to use it well and that’s where the business is growing – converting whole spaces – whole house projects. I’m on with several at the moment and the team are ahead of schedule and on budget for them all – this gives us a great platform to grow the business.

F

rom the many years I’ve spent in the building trade I’ve always loved seeing a project move from concept to completion. We pride ourselves on our ability to deliver each and every project, no matter how big or small, to a high standard, on time and on budget. The handover to the client is always the most pleasurable part – seeing the transformation that we’ve made of their dreams coming true. That’s what continues to drive me to produce the best quality property work that I can. Even after 35 years, I still get excited about each new project: my enthusiasm has never waned. Using all those years

T E ST I M O N I A L of experience to solve the problems other people said couldn’t be solved and creating the space that customers yearn for. That’s what makes the difference – taking the project from the beginning, then recognising and developing the possibilities to use space effectively. We do this by using modern building methods and building materials while keeping as many original features as we can to create a blend for modern living. The range of products available today enables us to achieve whatever the client desires, whether it's a bathroom, kitchen, orangery, or just a cool living space in which to unwind, relax and enjoy some well-earned quality time. Our work tends to be in the residential sector where we take a property and work with the client’s or our own architect to create a workable plan of property conversion. This can be a whole house or

MY STYLE ICON...

Jane Birkin Her natural, simple and free spirited approach to dress for herself is something I have always admired and has definitely influenced my style.

IA S OFI A MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF ART... ‘Untitled’ by Sadequain: Sadequain’s paintings and calligraphy mesmerised me many years ago when I was studying the history of art. This untitled piece has always been one of my favourites.

MY FAVOURITE BUILDING... Is our family home in Lynga, Sweden: Spending almost every summer here since I was four in the Swedish countryside with my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins has filled me with warm memories that I will never forget.

MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION...

MY FAVOURITE PIECE FROM OUR CURRENT COLLECTION...

MY FAVOURITE DESIGNER... Geoffrey Bawa. Having not been familiar with his work prior to my first visit to Sri Lanka, I was struck with his unique designs that merged local with international style and came to be known as ‘Tropical Moderernism’. I have now made five trips to Sri Lanka to see more of his work.

Q&A Pendle Harte: What is a mindful interior? Gabriella Khalil: I think a mindful interior is a space that evokes feelings of peacefulness or mental tranquility. I wouldn’t necessarily point to any particular type of style but these are thoughtfully designed spaces created to help those in it to feel relaxed. Certain greenery is a common feature that can help create the feeling of a mindful space. PH: How does a successful space affect your mood? GK: I think that our surroundings affect our mood in a direct way. I feel that a successful space (depending on the style) can make us automatically feel tranquil, happy, relaxed or upbeat. The same goes for an unsuccessful space as well. I personally struggle a lot with darkness, so lighting is always one of my key focus points in any interior that I design. PH: For a ‘calm interior’ we might picture a minimalist white space – but your spaces are full of visual interest. How does one achieve a balance? GK: I do like minimal spaces but I am especially drawn to a room with unique features within its design. I think to achieve calmness, it all comes down to the selection and method used to arrange decor pieces for a particular space. For example, there

might be a very beautiful pattern that I want to use on a sofa and therefore I will be sure to combine more simple understated armchairs into the room. This will allow for an overall calmness in the space but also visual interest at the same time. I do the same for styling, matching more striking objects with minimal colour and texture. PH: What makes space not calm? GK: I think that combining too many objects or styles together can create an overwhelming space. I am very aware of the pieces I incorporate within a space and try not to overload an interior with too much of anything. This can apply to accessories, artwork, colours, patterns or even furniture. PH: Where do you start when reworking a room? GK: I usually start with a feature design element in the room. Sometimes this is as simple as the sofa in a living room and other times it can be an incredible artwork or even the wall colour. Usually, once this feature element is determined, everything falls into place from there. PH: Can you describe your personal style? GK: I am very drawn to eclectic and timeless style, so I try to use this as an ethos to my own personal approach to style. That said, I am always inspired by travel, vintage design and art exhibitions and therefore my

88

A successful space can make us automatically feel tranquil, happy, relaxed or upbeat interest in colour and decor changes from time to time depending on the project or current inspiration. PH: What is your home like? GK: My home is simple in a way. I have a mostly neutral palette with lots of artwork and greenery everywhere. I feel that this type of space really helps me feel most comfortable. At the other end of the spectrum, I recently painted my office a striking green and went completely out of my comfort zone - I have to say I love it. PH: What first led you to interiors? GK: My background is in art and I have always been very interested in how great art can transform an interior. I started to freelance as an art consultant. From there I started to incorporate interior styling and design as part of my career. gabriellakhalil.com

think I have been here for about 22 years. It hasn’t always been the same; it was a complete dump when I first saw it. You couldn’t even get into most of the rooms because the doors didn’t open. It was just awful – one of my daughters wouldn’t even come inside. She was nine or ten years old, and I remember her saying: ‘Mum, how could you buy a place with such a disgusting-coloured front door?’ But it was big, and I was sick of living in a small flat in Stoke Newington. My two daughters didn’t have their own bedrooms, so it was time to move on. We had to have everything redone. I remember not having enough money left to paint it when the work was done, so my builder kindly filled up a big metal rubbish bin with paint and managed to give each wall two coats in one weekend. And it’s just evolved from then on. About eight years ago I had to have the house underpinned, so I thought that I should make any changes I wanted to do then, because I had decided to stay here for life. I extended the downstairs, so I could live there, converted the upstairs into a

flat, insulated all the walls, had new floors laid, had new windows made to match the originals but with double glazing and sound-insulated the ceilings. I really went for it. I had a lovely garden before, but it was destroyed during the work. I didn’t want to spend another 12 years working on a new one, so I decided to get someone to help me. I wrote a letter to landscape designer Todd LongstaffeGowan and he happened to like it. I didn’t really know who he was, I think I had just seen a garden of his I liked. He came along and turned out to be very famous and expensive. I thought I wouldn’t be able to afford him and then he said, ‘Just pay my wine bill.’ I thought it would be really uncool to ask him how much that would be, but it turned out to not be too much. I finished all the work in two years and thought, ‘right, that’s it, I don’t have to move or do any more work ever again. I can just sit pretty.’ I didn’t expect to fall in love at this stage in my life; mostly because I’m very fussy. But I’m moving into my partner’s place. It’s hard living between two places and it’s certainly a bit A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

unsettling for my pottery, which I started when I retired from working in publishing full-time. I didn’t think I was creative or artistic at all, and then I did a week-long course with Sandy Brown in Devon and I was unleashed. Christophe, my partner, is building me a studio more than two-and-a-half times bigger than my one now, which is hard to resist. He’s also letting me do up the basement flat, so I’ll have my own space. It will be fun to find a balance between our two styles. We overlap a lot, but he’s a bit more severe than me; he wouldn’t cover his Le Corbusier chaise lounge in floral linen. I’ll miss the neighbourhood. It’s very eclectic around here; there are Orthodox Jewish, West Indian, Bangladeshi and Indian communities, with a bit of slow gentrification. There are a lot of lefties, and a do-goody group of us called the East/ West Bank Action Group. We look after the nature reserve opposite the house, which acts as a green corridor for 48 different types of birds and stretches down to Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington. We’ve really turned it around.

F The brand is synonymous with great design, functionality and a stong British heritage

ounded in 1920 by Italian-born Lucian Ercolani in High Wycombe, Ercol is an enduring name in the British furniture industry. Winners of multiple awards from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, the company still manufactures many of its early designs, and while it produces a variety of different pieces, it is its iconic chairs for which Ercol will always be primarily known. When Ercol perfected the art of steam-bending wood, it became able to manufacture in large quantities and the classic Windsor chair became a low-cost staple in post-war British households. The company remains family-owned and today it is run by Lucian’s grandson, Edward Tadros. From the early 1920s through to today, Ercol has worked with craftsmen, manufacturers and retailers to create and extend the Ercol furniture collection to the widest audience. The brand has become synonymous with great design combined with functionality and a strong British design heritage. Today’s designs are created within its design studio in Princes Risborough in the English Chiltern Hills, and most furniture is made by craftsmen in Ercol’s Buckinghamshire factory. While the brand is keen to emphasise its new design work and contemporary approach, it's important to remember that many of its classic original designs remain unchanged. The popular Quaker armchair, for instance, is still for sale in the same design. It encompasses a tall u-shaped, bent wood seat back as well six turned spindles and supportive armrests. Not only does it provide a comfortable sit but it looks beautiful too. The design exudes elegance with its clean lines and soft curved edges. The chair bow is steam bent from a single A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

in the production process, there's an accepted reject rate of up to 40%. Thanks to Ercol's family ethos, designers work closely with the factory workers to ensure that the process is realistic. Design has always been at the heart of Ercol – design for comfort, design for function, design for beauty. The brand combines practicality with looks in the copious storage of Ercol's sideboards, shelving units, bookcases and display cabinets, the comfort of the studio couch and chairs, or the utility of coffee tables, lamp tables, desk and media units. As well as the in-house design team, Ercol commissions some of the best in British design talent to create pieces that constantly evolve to reflect how we live today, while continuing to reflect Ercol’s quality and craftsmanship. Ercol will be celebrating its 100th birthday in 2020 and preparations are already underway. We look forward to celebrating with them. ercol.com

straight ash rail into an amazingly tight radius bend and then sanded and shaped to give its subtle and elegant profile. But of course it's not just chairs, and neither is the Ercol ethos so much about low-cost utility any more. Now the company's offering is focused on stylish, contemporary pieces made to last using traditional methods and high-quality components. The factory moved to its present site in 2002 and it's a spacious, airy building with lots of windows and natural light. The friendly feel comes from it being very consciously a family business: many staff have worked here for years, and the dedication to taking on apprentices generates a lot of loyalty. A names board commemorates workers with more than 21 years' serivce, of which there are many. Walking around, you are struck immediately by the overwhelming smell of fresh wood. It's a well-organised system, with different components being created at various stations and the factory's eco credentials are strong. Sawdust generated from cutting wood is sucked into huge tubes and taken to power the building's vast central boiler. It's fascinating to watch the steam bending process and to hear about the precision involved –getting it right requires the consistency of the wood to be exactly right – too dry and it will snap– and the steam pressure to be strong enough to create the perfect bend. The Evergreen chair's steam bent back bow is made with the original straps that date back to the 1950s and the precision required

on the resort or car that they depict – they have the ability to transport the viewer back there. Another important element of a poster is the lettering. Finally, the charm of a hand-painted artwork, as all ours are (as opposed to a digital design), is what makes a poster special.

Q How did Pullman Editions begin? A My husband, Simon Khachadourian, founder of the Pullman Gallery (pullmangallery.com), has dealt in important original vintage posters for over 30 years. Having seen the prices of Art Deco posters dramatically increase, we saw a gap in the market for more affordable decorative posters that incorporate the iconic design elements from the 1920s and 1930s, which are so sought-after. Prior to launching Pullman Editions in 2010, I spent ten years in the City developing marketing strategies for small businesses, so I’ve been able to apply many of those skills – starting my own business is something I’d always wanted to do, and I love the creativity involved in designing the poster collections.

Vintage posters were never designed to be hung in people's homes

Q Which are your favourite designs? A My favourite design from our collections is the ‘Route du Soleil’ by Charles Avalon, which features a Ferrari Daytona. It reminds me of driving holidays in the south of France.

Q What makes a successful poster? A Although our posters are inspired by those from the 1920s and 30s, they are actually quite different in many ways. Firstly, we use a much more vivid colour palette. Period posters usually feature a more limited number of colours, largely because this reduced expense. Although vintage posters were designed to be eyecatching, to promote new travel routes or destinations, most were never designed to be hung in people’s homes, so I would argue that on the whole, they aren’t as decorative as our new designs. Another important element is that they evoke memories of being in a certain place at a certain time. Most of our customers choose posters based

Q And the best-selling ones? A Our first poster to sell out was the Val d’Isere ‘Off-Piste Skier’. This resort is hugely popular with Brits. Unusually, the original was actually painted on wood which gives it a wonderful texture and sense of movement. There are several others that are close to selling out including the Ferrari GT 250 California Spider in the Cote d’Azur and the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix. Q How does the bespoke offering work? A We are doing more and more bespoke artwork commissions. Our house artist, Charles Avalon, is so busy with them that we aren’t able to launch more than a handful of our own new poster designs to sell in the gallery in any given year. Though happily we now have more than 100 designs to choose from. Private commissions are very popular as special gifts; they typically take 4-6 weeks from start to finish. The original artwork takes the form of a gouache on art board, which the customer owns along with the full copyright to the image. pullmaneditions.com A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

Q&A Q What kind of projects do you work on? A We do everything. From a full refurb with side extensions and loft conversions to a basement dig-out. We can handle the whole project or a specific part. Q What’s your background? A I had always wanted to be in property development business and when I got the London Basement Company in to do a basement for me, I met the project manager, who wanted to set up his own business. So we teamed up for a couple of years, starting in 2006. Now we do our own projects as well as client projects.

We increase the square footage significantly, while incorporating luxurious additions

Q Do you have a signature style? A We specialise in high quality prime London locations. We increase the square footage significantly, while also incorporating luxurious additions including cinema rooms with surround sound systems, basement swimming pools, gyms and wine cellars as well as bathroom TVs. Q What are you working on now? A We are renovating two houses in Fulham, transforming them from run-down properties to luxurious residences with full length basements, side extensions and mansard roofs in projects around the million pound mark. We recently extended a 5,000 sq foot house in Wimbledon to 10,000. Q What’s next for Normand Developments? A We’re looking at really pushing the boundaries in our next interesting and well-designed project. We have an in house architect and can offer a full service with our team of 13, two project managers, carpenters and everything in house. normand-developments.com

ounded in the year 2000, Bob & Blossom pre-dates (and arguably inspired) so much of what we now see as ubiquitous in the field of independent kids fashion. Currently operating from a small but perfectly formed shop on Columbia Road, the brand does a fine line in what you might call “beautiful basics”. Breton tops, cotton tees, easy-fit grey marl sweatshirts, dinky trousers – many enlivened with simple prints in pretty colours, or else with cute slogans like “Believe in Magic”. One speciality is the tutu, returning for AW18 in flouncy, foamy peach and coral chiffon, with an elastic waist and a shiny satin bow (for sheer sass). Put it all together and you have a one-stop shop for both everyday casuals and glamorous finishing touches. Add the brand’s range of pretty accessories to the mix and you hardly need to shop elsewhere. It’s great for gifting, too – they even create their own line of goldspot polka-dot gift packaging. bobandblossom.co.uk

Many Rivers Crossed The Study Preparatory School, Wimbledon celebrates 125 years

T

he Study Preparatory School, Wimbledon, for girls aged 4-11, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The institution recently opened its doors to its alumnae at a wonderful celebration of the school, and old girls from 1940 through to the present day enjoyed the festivities. The school certainly has come a long way since it was founded in 1893. The Study is now a highly successful, non-selective prep school based on two beautiful sites bordering leafy Wimbledon Common, and is renowned for its creativity. No less than 39 scholarships were offered to its Year 6 girls this year, beating last year’s all time record of 35. We caught up with them to find out more.

Q Tell us about The Study Prep, what sets you apart? A The Study is a creative school, but not at the expense of academic rigour, as illustrated by its excellent results at 11+. The Study combines the warmth and sense of community at a traditional village school with the facilities and achievements of a leading preparatory. Q In what ways has the school come along in the last 10 years? A The school has introduced hot lunches, acquired an amazing allpurpose sports ground, refurbished the historic Spencer House site with the addition of a landscaped playground, and there are plans to develop the Wilberforce House site in the near future. Q What facilities and opportunities do you have for the creative arts? A Although academic rigour is at the heart of the school, The Study

Our old girls have gone on to achieve many things and have fond memories of their time at The Study

is highly creative, with a reputation for excellence in music and the performing and visual arts, and has had Artsmark Gold status since 2009. The Study’s music and performing arts offer is exemplary. Q And what about sports? A The dynamic PE department ensures success at both regional and national level across athletics, hockey, cross country and netball and has a spacious off-site sports ground with multi-use pitches for training and matches. Q In what areas do you believe the school’s strengths lie? A The Study offers a broad, creative and enhanced curriculum where every girl is encouraged to achieve her best, and the focus on the needs and strengths of every individual is key to the success of the school. Being nonselective at entry, the school manages to provide a bespoke education to each girl, enabling her to achieve her best at 11+. The results speak for themselves: 2018 was another record year of scholarships, with 39 offered to the Year 6 girls, including academic, all-rounder, sport, and music. This brings The Study’s total of scholarships achieved over the last five years to an impressive 135. Q Tell us about the head teacher’s philosophy? A Mrs Pepper’s mission is to enable each individual to fulfil her potential in a supportive and happy environment. The girls enjoy a rich diversity of experiences, in and out of the classroom, and an understanding of important issues beyond the school gates. Making MELODIES

London’s Chelsea Quavers Music School is popular with budding musicians. Founding Principal, Claire Meyer, tells us why…

he benefits of learning a musical instrument at a young age are well documented. Everything from a child’s language skills to selfconfidence and spatial awareness to attention to detail gets a boost. For this reason, the London-based Chelsea Quavers Music School, which runs holiday workshops and international tuition online, has an outstanding reputation among families. “There is no other school like it anywhere in the UK, or globally,” states Claire Meyer, Chelsea Quavers Music School’s Founding Principal. “All our tutors are hand-picked from the top conservatoires around the UK. The qualities we look for in each of our tutors are empathy, energy,

patience, creativity, enthusiasm and a passion to engage with and inspire each individual pupil.” Eric Whitacre, the GrammyAward winning composer and conductor, agrees with Meyer on the uniqueness of the school. He says: “Claire Meyer is simply one of the most extraordinary educators I have ever met. She has carefully crafted a bespoke curriculum and the Chelsea Quavers’ teaching style I believe to be the future of music education and teaching in general.” Whitacre is not the only well-known supporter of the school, either. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 100% funding for a gifted and talented pupil to study at Chelsea Quavers Music School. And, since 2014, Marsh & Parsons has been an invaluable sponsor of the facility. It is all because of the distinctive

Many of our pupils come in the holidays and parents constantly praise the standard of our workshops

EDUCATION • FOCUS approach to music education Meyer and her team takes. Meyer has spent the last few years creating Chelsea Quavers’ curriculum, which has since been highly praised by Directors of Music and Heads of top prep schools in the UK. “I have carefully crafted a fun and educational music curriculum to teach children from age four upwards to read, write, perform, transcribe and compose music in a fun, easy-to-follow and engaging format using our highly acclaimed series of Chelsea Quavers Music Puzzles and the popular hands-on educational musical game CHENGA!” The curriculum is specially designed to allow young pupils to work without constant supervision through reinforcement and step-by-step progression.Yet Chelsea Quavers also offers an excellent tutor to pupil ratio of no more than five pupils to one tutor. “No other club in London offers this outstanding level of support for each of its pupils,” Meyer adds. “Every one works at his or her own individual level, and children are grouped according to ability and age.” Chelsea Quavers also offers international online tuition. “As well as the face-to-face camera, we use a close-up camera (she’s called Ziggi!), so the student can see in clear detail what the tutor is writing as if they were sitting across a desk from each other.” In this way, students anywhere in the world are taught ABRSM Theory of Music Grades 1-5, Aural Grades 1-8, Sight Reading (piano), and Sight Singing Grades 1-8. For children aged four to 12, from beginners or experienced musicians, Chelsea Quavers offers everything they need to excel within the world of melodies. “Our tutors work as a tight-knit team to provide not only the highest possible standards in music education, but to engage with every child to unlock potential, selfbelief and confidence.” Now that is something worth travelling for.

THE LEAP Rebecca Parrish, Director of Sixth Form at Sydenham High School, GDST, on what makes a great sixth form

S

ixth form is a key period of academic, social and emotional development. There is a seismic shift in expectations for independent study and wider research, as well as the constant thoughts of future paths. The transition is challenging so it is key to choose a Sixth Form which supports the individual, whatever the path ahead, and can provide opportunities for growth and development both personally and academically. It is important to remember that educating young adults requires a fine balance between focusing on developing a passion for their subjects but also a curiosity for, and the strength of character to deal with the working world beyond.

GOOD SIXTH FORMS OFFER: • high-quality, inspiring teaching • an innovative curriculum • outstanding pastoral care and support • the ability to role model leadership • higher education and careers guidance • the understanding that equally important to academic success is the participation in co-curricular activities to develop a well-rounded, balanced sense of self

Recruitment at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. At Sydenham High School Sixth Form we set high targets to foster ambition, but equally value the personal skills which make students successful in life. We are educating our girls not only for further education and careers but also to be valuable citizens. Of course academic results matter but it is the education environment on the whole that creates a young person who is ready to take on the challenges of further education or the leap straight into industry. Alongside A-Level studies, the Extended Project Qualification and Stretch Programme enrich our girls’ learning by fostering critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and social development, and our Professional Skills Programme provides all Year 12 students with specialist training in corporate communication, matching each student with a professional mentor while completing a selfdirected project in order to build on and develop their work skills. At Sydenham High, our Sixth Form is very much the jewel in our crown. Our girls are role models and leaders to the lower years and are ambitious and confident about their futures. They are curious, considerate and fearless, often exceeding their own expectations. Our drive to create fearless girls is best exemplified by them. They have the courage and self-belief to believe that anything and everything is possible, be that at school, masterminding a national STEM competition, visiting 10 Downing Street to discuss charitable activities, launching a new fashion brand or making molecular discoveries. A Sydenham High girl possesses the intelligence and the inner strength and spirit to be whatever she wants to be. Nothing should hold a girl back and with Sydenham High girls we couldn’t, even if we tried. To find out more about joining our unique Sixth Form visit sydenhamhighschool.gdst. net/sixthform or call 020 8557 7000. WHOLE SCHOOL OPEN DAY

It is widely agreed by business leaders that schools should focus on employability skills as well as attainment. “Young people must impress with their willingness to learn, commitment and motivation. New recruits must show they can work in a team, communicate, solve problems and have commercial awareness,” says the Director of Global Student

easoned holidaymakers will be familiar with Tuscany’s many charms and will likely have visited the big names like Florence and Siena. But Central Tuscany has so much more to offer, from the hilltop town of Cortona to the historic city of Perugia and one of Tuscany’s best-kept secrets, Arezzo. Within an hour’s drive of all these special places is Fontelunga – a boutique hotel set up a quiet side road in the quaint town of Pozzo Della Chiana – a short drive from Pisa airport. The ideal base from which to explore, it boasts spectacular views across the Valdichiana, the largest open valley in the Apennine mountains and an area known for its beef from the Chianina cattle, which provides the coveted Florentine steak.

An open valley in the Apennine mountains known for its beef from the Chianina cattle The 19th century red-brick villa, surrounded by gardens and olive groves, has been lovingly and painstakingly renovated, and now has its own large pool, hot tub and tennis court. Inside its classic Tuscan façade you’ll find modern art pieces and furniture from the likes of Philippe Starck and Arne Jacobsen blended in with original mouldings and large windows framing the valley views. Owners Paolo Kastelec and Philip Robinson make staying with them feel like visiting the country bolthole of fashionable friends – they even have a pack of friendly little dogs. They’ve lived in the area for more than a decade, so can offer insider advice and honest opinions on everything from restaurants to wineries in the area. One they take us to on our first night is local haunt La Lodola, yet another beautiful Tuscan farmhouse which serves seasonal dishes, written up on chalkboard menus. As well as eight double rooms and one twin, there are two villas to rent in their entirety nearby. All come with bathtubs and overhead showers with Molton Brown products. There are no televisions (time to ‘switch off’), but there are Bluetooth speakers for you to listen to your own music. and headboards in light Italian prints. If you can splurge, go for the junior suite housed in the cottage with French doors opening onto the garden and double sinks in a large bathroom. Breakfast, much like lunch and dinner in Italy, can be as long and lazy an affair as you like. As well as a feast of homemade pastries and cakes, fresh local and seasonal fruit, and cooked breakfasts are all included. Casual dinners (the chef asks in the morning whether you will join in the evening for a communal meal) highlight local and seasonal ingredients as well as regional dishes like pasta with truffles and torta salata (a type of Tuscan quiche), and light lunches include caprese salads with tomatoes from the hotel’s garden, and prosciutto with figs or melon. And naturally, aperitivos are always welcome, as is wine, which leads me onto Avignonesi – a winery near the village of Valiano, just a few kilometres from the historic town of Montepulciano. With its vineyards, villa, chapel and ancient stone wine

cellars, it transports you right to the heart of this famous wine region and an afternoon spent tasting its collection is a must. If you’re willing to blow the budget a little, try the dark and mysterious Occhio di Pernice 2002 - an exclusive wine made from Sangiovese grapes with a flavour of dates, roasted figs and sweet spices akin to liquid caramel. Activities from yoga sessions and cookery classes to hot air ballooning and horseback riding can easily be arranged by the hotel. While a scenic drive will take you to Monte San Savino – a little town brimming with impressive renaissance relics and a little way further, to Cortona – a city enclosed by stone walls dating back to Etruscan and Roman times with excellent shopping and several tempting bars where you can people watch. We didn’t have time to get to Lucignano – one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval town planning, but it was highly recommended, so there’s the perfect excuse to go again. Like I said, Tuscany has many charms – in fact, far too many to fit into just one trip.

Located just a 20-minute taxi ride from Dorking station - accessible by a 60-minute train from London - Wotton House is an ideal getaway for time-poor Londoners (guilty as charged). Last year the house underwent a £6 million refurbishment, which saw the historic location given a new lease of life.

CHATEAUX Helen Baron trials two fairytale destinations in France’s Languedoc

Chateau Les Carrasses

By HELEN BARON

THE HOTEL

T

here are many ways a hotel can make an impression: striking contemporary design, ostentatious luxury, sheer scale. Chateau Les Carrasses opts for the rarer and more arresting tactic of looking like it’s been torn from the pages of a fairytale. This is the kind of chateau people share images of on Pinterest, its circular turrets and crenellated terraces rising Disneylike against the sky. The fact that you don’t see it clearly until you’ve driven through its picturesque grounds and up its sweeping drive only emphasises its loveliness. And yet for all that, its vibe is relaxed rather than imperious.

THE AMBIENCE

T

he staff are friendly and informal with each other and the guests – while the décor is tastefully understated. A sense of restful charm pervades the place – the amazing glass orangerie that sits behind the main building being a case in point. Of venerable age and possibly iconic origin (it may have been designed by Gustave Eiffel, the architect behind the Eiffel Tower), it doesn’t command attention so much as quietly invite it. It’s the ideal place to sit and sip a cocktail while the kids explore.

ACCOMMODATION

A THE AREA

T

he hotel sits atop a small ridge overlooking its own gardens and acre upon acre of vineyards. Beyond the vineyards is a line of blue hills; beyond the hills, the sea. Closer at hand is the small but beautifully formed town of Capestang, through which runs the justly celebrated Canal du Midi, a tree-lined watercourse speckled with gleaming white motorboats and the odd British-style canal barge. Boat trips are, of course, readily available, while a short drive will bring you into the heart of the stunning Languedoc countryside. Slightly further afield are the coastal lagoons of Etang de Bages and the historic towns of Narbonn and Beziers.

clever combination of hotel amenities and self-catering freedom makes Chateau Les Carrasses the perfect family destination. Rooms in the main building boast contemporary comforts alongside historic original features, while the accompanying buildings offer larger accommodation for families and groups. Some have private pools or hot tubs, all have terraces or gardens, and they’re furnished with relaxed luxury and easygoing comfort. .

hateau St Pierre de Serjac is like Chateau Les Carrasses’ urbane older brother. The architecture of the main building is similarly enchanting, blending storybook charm with a Hausmann-like refinement. The welcome is warm but (thankfully) not overwrought, and the service is exemplary – staff are always on hand to help with your requests, but interrupt your relaxation. It’s the right kind of luxury, especially for those travelling with children. And children are, of course, very welcome, yet somehow the atmosphere retains a welcome sense of serenity.

his part of the Languedoc offers all the joys of its more famous neighbour, Provence – scenic landscapes, pretty towns and beautiful beaches – without the latter region’s overwhelming number of summer visitors. As such, there’s no excuse not to get out and explore, starting with the friendly neighbouring village of Puissalicon (one of the Languedoc’s celebrated circulade towns, built in concentric circles) and finishing up at the beaches of Sérignan and Portiragnes, a 25-minute drive to the south.

“The architecture is enchanting, with storybook charm and a Hausmann-like refinement”

s with Carrasses, you can opt for a classic hotel experience with a suite in the main building, or plump for larger self-catering accommodation in the modern (but aesthetically appropriate) buildings ranged around the grounds. We stayed in a three-bedroom townhouse with private garden and pool (fenced and gated for safety), en suite bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen and open-plan living area. The interiors are beautifully done – restrained yet luxurious, traditional yet completely contemporary, with a real sense of quality craftsmanship throughout.

THE FACILITIES

WHAT TO EXPECT The Bajan people are very welcoming, but there’s more to it than that. Everything has a British tint to it, whether it’s glimpsing cricket being played on village greens or sipping tea and nibbling scones in the afternoon. The rolling countryside of the island’s interior is reminiscent of Devon and Somerset, and you’ll see familiar place names like Scarborough, Worthing and Scotland. There’s one crucial difference, the weather in Barbados is far superior.

DINING IN BARBADOS Barbados boasts some of the best (and most expensive) restaurants in the Caribbean, including The Tides, The Cliff and Daphne’s (managed by the same team as its iconic Kensington counterpart). Seafood features on most menus, but you’ll also find Thai fusion, Italian and international cuisine in abundance. A trip to Barbados wouldn’t be complete without sampling the island’s national dish: flying fish. Traditionally, it’s fried in breadcrumbs and served in a cutter (bread roll) with a good dollop of Bajan hot pepper sauce.

The food is top-notch and the history is fascinating

T

here’s so much to love about the Caribbean island of Barbados: the beaches are breathtaking, the weather’s near-perfect, the food is top-notch, the history is fascinating and the people are warm and welcoming. Barbados has it all.

WHERE TO STAY West Coast Blessed with soft sands, the west coast of Barbados is often called ‘The Platinum Coast.’ It’s where you’ll find all the luxury resorts such as Sandy Lane, Fairmont Royal Pavillion, as well as the upscale all inclusive offerings such as Colony Club and Mango Bay. South Coast The lively south coast is the place to stay if you like to do more than simply lounge by the pool. By day, there are watersports aplenty and after dark, St Lawrence Gap is a popular nightlife hotspot. Accommodation includes the highlyrecommended Sugar Bay Barbados, Bougainvillea Beach Resort and Turtle Beach by Elegant Hotels. LETSGO2 letsgo2.com A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

A VISIT TO PISSARRO’S SYDENHAM Family Homes in Sydenham

L

iving in Fulham is not fun anymore! The cranes are everywhere, glowing red in the sky at night, construction lorries thunder through and the large Chelsea tractors with their blacked out windows escaping from the sky-high prices in Knightsbridge, are infiltrating this once peaceful backwater. Time to move, but where to go? My star sign is Virgo and I analyse and research everything, comparing travel and value. Hours were spent on the property portals and it took me a while to travel in cyberspace around the London Boroughs. Inspiration came from a strange source, an exhibition of impressionist paintings showed Camille Pissarro’s paintings of Sydenham. It looked calm and green but had it changed in 100 years, would it be full of tower blocks and

the magic destroyed? A trip and a coffee at Blue Mountain Café showed that Sydenham had settled into its skin and was full of the traditional values, which had inspired the painter all those years ago. I was hooked. Leaving my natural habitat of the Kings Road would be difficult. A chat to the local and knowledgeable estate agents in Pedder I discovered that the best location in Sydenham is the Lawrie Park area and it was here, tucked away on a mature site with a tennis club around the corner, that I found the gated development of family homes by Kitewood. The train journey to Penge West was short and sweet, a pleasant local station and vibrant community raised my spirits. A brisk walk counting my steps on my Fitbit had me breathing the clean, fresh air and absorbing the atmosphere of calm. It was just like living in a village yet so close to London.

“I discovered that the best location in Sydenham is the Lawrie Park area” Unlike other developments, where clever photographs mask truly awful homes, this was understated and did not disappoint. Traditional style homes are being created on a well-designed established site using traditional building methods and warm yellow bricks. There are not rows of identical homes but a mix to suit different requirements and pockets. The show house gave an indication of the quality of the fittings used throughout the houses. Without a doubt my favourite house was the Victoria. Surrounded by gardens, this house sits comfortably in its plot with a wellplanned 2207sq ft interior footprint. It was just one of two houses with their own garage. Great space on the ground floor which opens onto the garden creating a superb family or entertaining space. The first floor offers bedrooms with fitted wardrobes and a flexible child’s bedroom or study, and the second floor has been used for two master suites both with ensuite bathrooms and dressing room, a hugely important feature for me.
