Work it!

S

eptember ushers in a renewed vigour for getting down to things. After the last joyful echoes of summer have grown quiet, the collective mindset becomes more focused. Our fashion editorial this month reflects just such an attitude - serious fashionistas can turn to page 20 now for our workwear special; because let’s be honest, every woman is an icon and every office a catwalk in waiting!

You can also admire our September fashion and beauty shoot, which contains all the inspiration you need to make the extra effort at work now that your beachy, sunkissed look is fading by the day. Expect autumnal, structured pieces for a smarter, more defined look p22. For those of you who aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to summer and are still to go away, turn to page 32, where we pack for your last-minute holiday. And if you’ve still not decided on a destination, see page 64 – our On Location travel page covers Nice - the number one destination on the Cote D’Azur. Getting back to all things work-related, we’re always interested to talk to and support local businesses; we even look to include local boutiques in our fashion shoots; this month we were delighted to include Joule of Hampstead (mayfairjewellers.com) and Stephen Einhorn (stepheneinhorn.co.uk) jewellers in our Working Girl feature. If you have an independent business you’d like to tell us about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! DRAMA QUEEN THE WHITE

It was organised by Rollercoasters and mobile zoo Impeyan, who run ‘animal encounters’ sessions for children. Councillor Larraine Revah, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families, said: “This was a lovely opportunity for local disabled children to experience these amazing creatures close up. In some cases, they could also stroke and hold the animals, which was a great thrill for them. Congratulations to Rollercoasters for organising such a great summer programme.” camden.gov.uk

A CLASS ACT

North Londoner Harriet Thorpe, acting on home turf WORDS: HELEN BARON

H

arriet Thorpe is one of those actors whose face is perhaps more instantly recognisable than her name. But trust me, you’ll know her face: her catalogue of work over the years will almost undoubtedly have left an indelible imprint on your mind. If this seems a hallmark of many of the best British actors, it’s probably because they so often excel in character roles: assuming fictional identities so convincingly that their real self seems little more than a footnote. And Harriet Thorpe has trodden the boards like few others, clocking up memorable roles (and serious acclaim) on television, in films and – perhaps most notably – in the theatre. In the early part of her career, Thorpe was most frequently seen in TV comedies such as A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Alexi Sayle’s Stuff, as well as primetime drama staples like The Bill and Casualty. But she really began to endear herself to the viewing public as wayward (and usually tearful)

receptionist Carole Parker in the muchloved The Brittas Empire, before playing Patsy and Eddy’s airhead friend Fleur in sitcom classic Absolutely Fabulous. Her next role brings her to the stage rather than the screen, in a production of Ken Ludwig’s Crazy forYou at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – but before we get on to that, I want to ask her what she gets from doing comedy. “We just laugh a lot!” is her immediate response. “As an actor, you’re playing funny people, finding out what makes them amusing; it’s part of the joy of rehearsing,” she continues. “You can imagine what its like working on Ab Fab!” She goes on to tell me that she worked on The Brittas Empire for seven years. “That’s a long time to run! As you develop a character, people write for you and you add in all sorts of little idiosyncrasies so it’s great fun building the personality.” It’s a skill she has turned to noncomedic ends as well, having worked extensively at the Royal National Theatre, in London’s West End and on two Shakespeare seasons at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. She appeared in the original revival cast of Cabaret at the Lyric Theatre, as Fraulein Kost, and played Mrs. Lovett in the national tour of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd:The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – which she regards

“As an actor, you’re playing funny people, finding out what makes them amusing; it’s part of the joy of rehearsing”

as her favourite character to date. It’s also an example of the extreme and complex roles that she often undertakes to play. Add to this the parts of Madame Thénardier in hit musical Les Misérables and Madame Morrible in the West End production of Wicked – as well as a recent West End stint as Tanya in Mamma Mia! – and the breadth of Thorpe’s abilities becomes clear. Her talent has made her a favourite not just of the viewing public, but of some of our foremost movie directors, and Thorpe has starred in movies including Mike Leigh’s lauded Life is Sweet (1990) and Nigel Cole’s smash hit Calendar Girls (2003). Of working with Leigh, Thorpe says, “I was extremely privileged to work on that creative level. To create characters from nothing... Mike’s vision is always a thrill.” I ask her what it was like starring alongside Helen Mirren (last month’s lead interview) and she has plenty of praise for the living legend. “Just wonderful. She’s very generous, supportive and kind.” When Thorpe speaks, it is with the precise, elegant intonations of an experienced thespian, choosing words with grace and care – in this sense, she’s reminiscent of Mirren herself. It makes me wonder if Thorpe ever hankers after a lead role – she clearly excels at the challenge of bringing smaller parts to life, imbuing them with vitality and interest… but maybe there’s a secret desire for the limelight, tucked away inside? “I have played leads,” she says. “It’s a big job. When you play smaller but

INTERVIEW

more pronounced roles, there’s the opportunity to make the most of it, to make people laugh in a shorter amount of time… it’s often these supporting characters that people remember!” One look at Harriet Thorpe’s CV – or a quick scan of some of her famous moments on YouTube – attests to that: she really is a master of her craft, moulding irresistibly charismatic characters that immediately ensnare your attention and affection. With that in mind, I ask what it was like to work on Harry Potter (Thorpe played a witch in the last instalment of the franchise, but at the time of our interview was unsure if her part made the final cut). Her answer provides a glowing endorsement of both the (USfunded but largely UK-made) Potter movies and the British film industry, as exemplary in their dedication to using great actors and not just Hollywood stars. “It’s extraordinary and diverse,” Thorpe says of the British movie business. “It’s definitely a strong suit of our country.” Though she quickly concedes that she wishes the arts were more highly valued and supported by the government, especially at this time of wide-ranging (and devastating) funding cuts. But Thorpe’s focus soon swings back to the roles she plays. “I always play predatory women,” she muses. “If I’m cast as a queen, I’m probably poisoning the king!”

But while character acting seems to come naturally to her, what she will not do is stake a preference for either one of film, theatre or TV. “Theatre is an actor’s medium,” she explains. “Film and TV are completely different [to theatre]: they are somebody else’s vision. How it’s cut together is out of your control, while on stage you control your own performance. But all have positive qualities that I enjoy. I’m very lucky to be able to do all three.” And right now, it’s the stage that has her attention. Currently in rehearsal mode as part of the cast of Crazy for You, Ken Ludwig’s critically acclaimed production celebrating the American musicals of the 1930s, Thorpe is talking to me while on her lunch break at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – and she’s overflowing with enthusiasm for the project. “The characters are so bright and warm,” she says, “and I’m so lucky to be a part of it, especially as I get to play two opposing characters. We’ve been working with a fabulous choreographer too, Stephen Mear.” People might not realise that Thorpe originally trained in dance at the prestigious Royal Ballet School, so the play’s choreographed routines have offered a delightful refresher course in some of the skills of her youth. When I ask her why she stopped dancing, her response is characteristically hilarious: her breasts “got too big”!

It’s also quite clearly a pleasure for Thorpe to be acting on home turf. She grew up in North London and is always happy to spend time here. She especially adores Hampstead Heath and Highgate Woods, where she walks her dog. In fact, she recently judged a dog competition at Highgate Fair! And speaking of dogs, hers is almost famous, having appeared on an episode of Cesar Milan’s DogWhisperer. So what does the future hold for Harriet Thorpe? She tells me she is busy with her ambassador duties for The Breast Cancer Charity, arranging Walk theWalk fundraising events; she is also Chairman of the Actor’s Centre in London and teaches in many of the city’s acting schools. She also finds the time to run her own business (which she set up with her sister – also an actress and writer), delivering presentation and public-speaking skills to UK-based and international companies. And finally – is that a twinkle in her eye – she lets me in on talks she’s been having with Jennifer Saunders, about a three-part Absolutely Fabulous reunion. Looks like this avid North Londoner isn’t done making us laugh just yet. n Crazy for You runs until September 10. Tickets are available from the box office (0844 826 4242) or via openairtheatre.com

Support Act We head to Design Also to get some much-needed bra-fitting advice…

A

woman’s bra size can change a number of times in her life and for a variety of reasons – fluctuations in weight, physical activity, diet, pregnancy and contraception being just a few of them. The result is that the majority of women in the UK wear the wrong size bra. For that reason, we thought it was high time to head down to Design Also to get fitted properly, once and for all, by expert bra-fitter Yvonne Lyddon.

MEASURE UP

Yvonne started out in nursing but a slipped disc meant that she had to discontinue her training. Working in the Evening and Cocktail Dress department at Harrods gave her a good introduction to the vagaries of womenswear sizing and she went on to work with lingerie and hosiery, finally opening Design Also in 1983.

This last is a common problem. The bra needs to fit under the bust, in a straight line round the back and fixed on the lowest hook to keep the fit for longer. The back of the bra should sit under the shoulder blades. “I had a pregnant customer whose bra went right over her shoulder blades at the back,” says Yvonne. “It makes such a difference to wear the right size bra.”

Yvonne knows from experience that 95% of women are wearing the wrong size bra, and recommends getting fitted with every new bra purchase, because brands tend to size up differently and different shapes suit different body types. Her expertise and experience means Yvonne can now fit many customers by eye – “Someone under five feet three inches in height,” she explains by way of example, “is rarely over a 32-inch ribcage, because of their bone structure.” Every customer of Design Also benefits from a proper fitting - as well as from the hugely extensive range of bra styles the shop carries, with fashionable bras to cater for any breast shape, any occasion and any desired silhouette. So what are Yvonne’s top troubleshooting tips? The most common problem is wearing a bra too small in the cup. Before going up in inches, try a larger cup size. “A woman’s rib-cage does not change at all. The most common change made at Design Also is from a 36B to a 32DD.”

If you find a shape that suits you, buy it in every colour. “It’s difficult to say what are good shape enhancers as everyone is different, but I like low cups and half cups. Remember that white shows through under white. If your bra is riding up your back, it is too big in the cup.”

Washing care is very important! “Bras are made of approx 30 different pieces and the fabric is delicate. Hand wash them and use a gentle detergent such as Ecover. Never tumble-dry them and don’t dry them on a radiator. Heat causes bobbling, soggy patches and shape/colour change. If you’ve been fitted properly, you will know immediately if a bra you’re trying on fits. “When a bra fits, you forget you’re wearing one because you stop fiddling with it constantly,”Yvonne explains. “One woman, just fitted, thought she’d left her new bra in the shop –she was actually wearing it!” Design Also, 101 St. Pauls Road, Islington, N1 2NA, 020 7354 0035 Open: 2-7pm Mon, 1-7pm Tues-Fri, 12-7pm, Sat

seven steps to beat

fatigue Prof Mei from The AcuMedic Centre in Camden discusses ways to increase energy levels now that we’re all heading back to work after summer

O

ne of the most common conditions among our patients is tiredness. Doctors are so used to hearing about it that they have a shorthand way of writing it on your notes (TATT tired all the time). Why are we all so exhausted? What can be done? Read on to find out the Chinalife approach to fatigue: STEP 1: EAT AND DRINK FOR ENERGY The aim of a good diet is to take in nutrition whilst keeping your blood sugar levels steady. Sudden high jumps in your blood sugar will leave you feeling exhausted afterwards and put stress on your body, so try to avoid very sugary foods. On the other hand, going for long periods without food will leave you tired and is really unhealthy, so eat light and regularly and always start the day with breakfast.

caffeine-fuelled drinks. These natural tonics recharge you by treating the cause of your fatigue rather than giving you a short-lived, artificial stimulant which leaves you feeling more tired. Try White Ginseng drinks like chinalife’s QI tonic for a natural boost. STEP 4: GRAB ENOUGH ZZZZZZZZ’S Everyone needs a different amount of sleep, but you should be aiming for around 7.5 - 8.5 hours per night. Oversleeping is as bad for you as sleep deprivation. If you find that you are regularly sleeping more than nine hours, then you have to address the reasons why. STEP 5: BEAT STRESS AND EMOTIONS Overworked, upset? Your energy levels are directly connected with your stress and emotions, so deal with them through meditation, communication with friends and plenty of fresh air. STEP 6: LOOK AROUND YOU Your energy is directly affected by your environment. The Chinese use the theory of Feng Shui to create a surrounding that feeds and circulates QI to your body. Simple steps such as surrounding yourself with plants, motivational objects (eg. pictures of family and loved ones) and plenty of natural light will have a positive effect on you.

STEP 2: GET ACTIVE Exercise helps to invigorate the flow of QI (The Chinese for energy flow) which boosts your energy and increases the secretion of mood enhancing chemicals in the body. This helps to beat stress and it also ensures that you get a good sleep so you wake up refreshed.

STEP 7: SEE AN EXPERT Sometimes your body needs extra help to recharge. In some cases, fatigue may be caused by another underlying condition. It’s always a good idea to seek the help of a doctor to find out more about your particular reasons for tiredness and to receive individualised treatment. Go and see your GP or come and speak to an AcuMedic doctor. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine are incredibly effective at naturally boosting your energy levels. Our fully qualified doctors will uncover the roots of your fatigue and work with you to get you back to your full potential.

STEP 3: GO HERBAL Taking herbal supplements for energy is very different from consuming

O

MG: ladies, if you treat yourself to one treatment this season, MAKE IT THIS! There we go. I’ve said it, I’ve revealed my conclusions before I’ve even begun - thereby relieving the itch to shout about how good this facial is. I arrived at The City Point Club, it has to be said, in rather a state. Having been suffering from a three-week chest infection, any semblance of a beauty regime had long ago fallen by the wayside. My appointment was a light at the end of the tunnel. It was, I hoped, going to change me… and mark the departure of the last vestiges of the parasitic illness that had been on my case for what seemed like forever! I collapsed into the safety of Roberto’s treatment room, the meditative music, low lights, and ickering candles easing me into a state of zenlike calm. City AM newspaper reported Roberto as having ‘the best hands in the city’; not that I needed any further encouragement to book myself an appointment, but that testimony served as the icing on the cake. As I approach 30, I’ve begun incorporating anti-ageing treatments into my skincare routine, so I had to bear that in mind when deciding which facial to try. Initially, I had a consultation for laser skin rejuvenation (or VPL!) – alas, my dedication to a youthful complexion does not extend to avoiding the sun. Especially not (ironically) when it’s nally summer and my vitamin D-starved skin is drawn to the rays like the leaves of a desperately photosynthesising plant. In light of this, Roberto suggested that I counteract my sun worshipping with a Pro Collagen Quartz Lift Facial. The facial uses Elemis products and claims to reduce the number of wrinkles by up to 94% - while improving skin rmness by up to 57% - after just one treatment. Fortied with precious

Fresh as a Daisy

Helen Baron discovers the rejuvenating powers of the Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Facial at City Point Spa… minerals that aid in rebuilding and strengthening cell structures, the facial promotes intra-cellular activity and revitalises tired, stressed skin cells. In effect, the product formulations stimulate the body’s natural synthesis of collagen. Even without the scientic stuff, the treatment is luxuriously pleasant and worth a go just for the relaxation factor. I got to lie on a heated bed for over an hour while my feet, head, shoulders, décolletage and - of course - my face were massaged. Add to this the promise of a skin-cell recharge and I’m in my element. Ok, so the results may not last forever (my London lifestyle poses too great a

challenge for the facial’s efforts), but honestly: my post-treatment visage was luminous. I never looked so refreshed and smooth. The tired tube-passengers must have wondered at my numerous sneaky sideways glimpses at my reection in the train windows. I couldn’t get enough! And with out a jot of make-up! And that, my friends, never happens. Ever.  To see all the other amazing treatments on offer at The City Spa, headtothecitypointclub. co.uk, The City Point Club, 1 Ropemaker Street, EC2Y 9AW, 020 7920 6200

THE SPICE ROUTE Helen Baron takes the path you’d do well to travel at Roots at N1 The Concept I’m rather in love with the growing number of small independent restaurants sequestered in the back roads of Islington. The wide, antiquated streets that make up the Barnsbury area can seem like another world, a remnant of a bygone era very far from the hustle and bustle of contemporary Upper Street. Barnsbury’s old terraces and narrow-fronted houses were left intact during the wider area’s redevelopment because the poorer district was considered somehow secondary to requirements, unworthy of investment – with the irony being that the area now boasts some of north London’s most desirable period properties. It’s a community within a community, and as such, it’s the perfect spot for the kind of independent business that fuels and thrives on local spirit. For a while now, cute delis have blossomed in Barnsbury alongside modish bistros and gastropubs du jour (one of them even certified organic). And since

February this year, there’s been Roots at N1. This is no ordinary Indian restaurant. The brainchild of three hospitality professionals who earned their stripes in the service industry by way of The Ritz (London), Benares (Mayfair) and The Oberoi (New Delhi), the restaurant represents the combination of each of its founders’ ten or more years of hard graft and expertise. The owners endeavour to be anything but run of the mill, and their dedication shows. Hailing from the same part of Northern India (hence the name Roots), all three proprietors believe in the importance of clean flavours, authentic food, skilful presentation and excellent wines – not to mention high-class service. They’ve hit the nail on the head: this is no curry house; this is Indian haute cuisine. “Eating out should be a journey for people as soon as they enter our restaurant,” explains Rohit Bisht, one of the founders, “the food complemented by a professional

and relaxed service.” I completely agree: eating should be an ‘experience’. It’s not just about what we put in our gobs; it’s appreciating how our dish got there and how it utilises flavours, seasonal produce and spices. It’s about how we react to it and the atmosphere in which we eat it. Endearingly, the Roots team are also ethically aware, supporting WWF’s Save the Tiger campaign via donations and pin badgewearing waiters. Of course, the plight of the tiger – the national animal of India – is well documented. But it’s unexpected (and so all the more pleasing) to see a restaurant backing such a worthy cause – and surely an ingredient in the establishment’s burgeoning word-of-mouth success.

The food The Roots menu saw me in my element. Our hosts explained that the soft-shell crab with green paw-paw relish and the tandoori tiger prawns with pickle have become

signature dishes and are best sellers, but my companion and I were after a veggie feast, so we plumped for the Chef’s selection of specially prepared vegetarian dishes with sides of stuffed tandoori potato barrels and spinach and lentil cake with coconut and bell pepper. Even an average Indian restaurant can accommodate vegetarians pretty well, but at Roots our tastebuds were in for a rare treat. Our six sharing dishes arrived perfectly proportioned; adequate-sized plates of black lentils with red kidney beans, sautéed peas à la cumin and ginger, mint-flavoured new potatoes, basmati rice, cumin and cucumber raita, delicious apricot naan bread and the recommended Reisling wine. I loved the ‘tapas’ influenced servings – with so many amazing dishes available it was a relief not to have to choose just one. Don’t get me wrong: we were full at the end, but comfortably so, and with the satisfying knowledge that we’d broadened our palates as well. For me, the standout plate was the tandoori cottage cheese with smoked balsamic, which didn’t taste like cottage cheese at all, but a sort of delicate, plumped out, creamy seitan. My partner, meanwhile, lapped up the lentil dahl dish. We weren’t let down by dessert either; eschewing those pre-made freezer jobs (you know the type, cheap sorbets served in frozen lemons and oranges, the rockhard chocolate bombes), Roots offers a good selection of more refreshing options. We ended with a bite-sized chunk of deliciously spiced carrot cake and plenty of traditional Indian kulfi ice cream, again lightly spiced and with the added treat of a berry-infused sauce (about which my companion remarked, between spoonfuls,

“you must mention the coulis”). We stayed well beyond the end of our meal, tending two glasses of French Muscat de Beaumes and soaking up the ambience.

The atmosphere When I spoke to him after our meal, Rohit told me that the secret to good Indian cooking is to follow the basics at all times, being careful not to overuse or over-enhance flavours. Only once the fundamental principles and ingredients are understood can one begin to experiment. Perhaps he has applied the same principle to the décor at Roots, which is stylishly contemporary and suitably intimate without ever seeming too starchy or formal. The wooden flooring and tasteful colour scheme befit the nature of the restaurant and its

fare, elegant but never overdone. In fact, the restaurant is a good reflection of what I imagine might be the interiors choices of many local residents! It’s a wonderful feeling when you discover a restaurant that exceeds conventional expectations and ensnares you with a magic all its own. Roots at N1 does just that. Reinvigorating one of the world’s great culinary traditions by using classic ingredients in new and unforgettable ways, Roots shows that a local restaurant can outgun the mightiest competition in the capital. It’s certainly at home here in Barnsbury – as cool, characterful and downright desirable as the area itself. And though its location may mean a lack of footfall outside its front doors, that only adds to its charm. Besides, I have a feeling that before too long, people will be flocking from much, much further afield to sample its delights. n

RESTAURANT REVIEW

DOT-TO-DOT Gemma Billington has a working lunch at Spitalfield’s Indian haute- cuisine restaurant Scarlet Dot

O

n an unusually hot summer’s day, Spitalfields Market is even busier than normal; heaving with families, tourists and, as it’s lunchtime, city workers on the hunt for somewhere good to eat. Spitalfields has come a long way from its Victorian market-hall past, and although it holds a certain historic charm, it is now a chic and very contemporary hub of activity. There are literally hundreds of places to choose from for a spot of lunch but, judging from the line of people outside Scarlet Dot, this is one of the most popular choices.

Indian cuisine may not seem like the most appropriate lunch-time option, but it’s clear before even entering Scarlet Dot that it’s different to your standard Saturday night curry house. Scarlet Dot sits in the stylish Crispin Square, behind the famous indoor market. The line of people are queuing at a grill in front of the restaurant, waiting for a fresh wrap. Though it’s a busy time of day, there’s plenty of space both in the outdoor seating area and inside the restaurant and as I enter, there’s no sense of lunch hour panic but rather a very calm and relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant

interior is a contemporary black with subtle scarlet accents. The Japanese influence is clear and is a very different approach to other ‘traditional’ Indian restaurants. The Asian theme is also found in Scarlet Dot’s take on the Japanese classic ‘bento box’ - part of the express lunch served daily. My companion (who happens to be running late and on a tight one-hour break) and I decide to try out the bento boxes, even though the standard main menu of succulent curries, chargrilled meat, fish and side dishes are extremely tempting. The bento box option, however, offers a great selection and variety of food, perfectly-sized. I opt for a vegetarian box of Ghobi Aloo Ka Sangam (cauliflower and potatoes stir-fried with fenugreek), Chana Limbu (chick peas in spicy sauce) served with Naan and Pilau Rice. My companion goes for a similar choice but with chicken tikka and a meat samosa. The bentos are served with a complimentary drink and I’m instantly drawn to the ‘Scarlet Delight’ smoothie comprised of guava, lychee and passion fruit and, it’s just as sweet and refreshing as it sounds. There’s an impressive list of drinks, from virgin cocktails to wine and exotic rums, whiskeys, champagnes and spirits - perfect for a night out or even an extra-long lunch with little chance of returning to the office.

The selection of food and drink is fantastic and though I could have easily taken advantage of the excellent menu, the proportions of the bento box are just right. At the end of the meal I feel full without having overindulged. As a nation we tend to go overboard with our curries and often order an unnecessarily excessive amount. The bento box is a great option to ensure that you don’t return to work feeling uncomfortable and ready to fall asleep on your keyboard. The quality of the food is also very high. Each dish is full of fresh, fragrant herbs and spices and served with a slice of lime for a zesty kick. The level of ’spice’ is just right too; a crucial factor considering my inability to stomach anything too hot! I end my lunch with a cup of Mövenpick ice-cream whilst watching the crowds of Spitalfields mill about their business. The variety and quality of the food at Scarlet Dot make it a refreshing change from greasy take-aways and it’s a delicious and affordable alternative to my regular squashed sandwiches. Although the prospect of returning to the office isn’t welcome once I’ve lazily finished off my ice cream, I leave a relaxed and very satisfied customer.  4 Crispin Place Crispin Square Corner of Lamb Street E1 6DW scarletdot.co.uk 45

FANDANGO For over ten years vintage design gallery Fandango have been bringing treasures from across the world to their shop on Cross Street in Islington, however this autumn they have found some contemporary jewels closer to home. From the East London based Arts Cooperative Chish & Fips, fandango have got their hands on the latest works from the ‘Neon Aviary’ series. Owner Jonathan Hathaway is excited about this departure in a new direction, “For years I’ve wanted to find recent art that would sit well will the vintage furniture and other things we sell but nothing ever worked that well. These neon pieces are fantastic though, they have a great vintage feel and I love the fact they’re dual purpose - a beautiful art piece and a fun way to add some light and excitement to a corner or stairwell.” Fandango will be showing different birds from the collection throughout the coming months. 2 Cross St N1, www.fandangointeriors.co.uk

The Scandinavian way Simple, pared-back style and plenty of white is the secret to rooms that are filled with light – says interior designer Gail Abbott

1

I

n the far northern countries of Scandinavia, the clear summer light is one of the dominant features of the landscape. Forests, seas, lakes and mountains are bathed in its clarity, and for half the year the sun hardly sets below the horizon. The people make the most of the outdoors while they can, for the winter means long days in which the light is low and short-lived. Because of this, light is a quality that is highly valued. In their homes, the Scandinavians make every effort to maximise any gleam of light that enters. Simple, clutter-free rooms painted white have pale floors and understated window dressings. These elements are easily put together to create an interior style that is simple and unassuming, and whether you live in a city apartment or a country house, clutter-free rooms and a pale colour palette are a flawless formula that will help achieve a home that is filled with light.

against walls painted in brilliant white. The cushions are carefully chosen from a restrained palette, but it is the tones, rather than the colours that define the light in this all-white living room.

1. LIVING ROOM A low-level grey sofa is piled comfortably with soft cushions of varying sizes, set

2. DINING ROOM The simplicity of this dining room, with its white walls and gauzy muslin curtains,

2

is underlined by the single blue and white plate used for display and the understated country flowers. The traditionally-inspired dining chairs, with their checked linen seat covers, are Gustavian in style. A dining table gets a touch of class when it’s laid with a few choice pieces. A pure white cloth, decorative white china, sparkling glassware and silver cutlery will glint in the light, whether it’s sun streaming through the window or candlelight at night 3. WINDOW DRESSING Floor-length muslin curtains are wafted by the breeze in summer. Long windows are left open in summer, but in winter they allow in as much light as possible. 4. KITCHEN White walls and surfaces are the basis of this kitchen, but it is the accent colours in the roller blinds and light shades that give it its authentic Swedish style. The old table has been sanded and treated with a typically Scandinavian white oil.

GET IT WHITE White comes in so many different shades, so although it can be cheap, try to avoid the classic brilliant white which can look harsh and blue in our northern light (although it can look great teamed with strong colours like navy blue). For a softer effect, Farrow & Ball’s Pointing is a gentle offwhite, New White has a creamy tinge, and James White gives the slightest touch of green.

5. UTILITY ROOM The built-in storage in this utility room, built with tongue and groove planks, fits neatly around the Belfast sink and is painted in a darker white than the walls for contrast. The pale colours reflect as much light as possible into the tiny room. 6. BEDROOM One of the freshest colour combinations must be the merging of green and white, one of nature’s most uncomplicated pairings. For example a branch of white orange blossoms in a plain vase mirrored by a low cup that holds a single rose. A pale green cushion adds a hint of spring to the snow-white bed linen. 7. BATHROOM A pretty, country style bathroom in London has been put into a room originally conceived as a bedroom. The tongue and groove walls and bare floorboards are painted white, and the storage unit houses baskets for towels, as well as a round basin plumbed in beneath the wooden top. gailabbott.co.uk, 01223 501314

LONDON UNDERGROUND Take a tour of the London streets, one of, if not the, finest metropolis in the world and what do you think you are going to see? Can’t see anything? Then look... beneath you!

INTERVIEW BY JANE TARRANT

Basements that’s what you’ll  nd; hundreds of them, all over London. There are so many basements being built around London that you would be forgiven for thinking we are becoming a subterranean species. Some high prole celebrities are so against them, when even more of the glitterati are having them built. So, we thought we would ask our old sparring partner, Steven McDicken from Metropolitan Basements, to justify the upheaval, the digging , the dirt and the bad press! Why do people hate basements? The only people who hate basements are the ones that don’t need them. Everybody else I know loves them. So… why do people love basements? Simple… more space! and at a fraction of the cost of moving home.

At a fraction of the cost… please explain? Well if you wanted to move home it would cost you say £800 to £1500 per square foot for that extra oor space and if you build a basement it only costs you, £400 per square foot including the VAT. In fact, what you would save on the stamp duty you have to pay when moving house, goes a long way to buying a large part of your basement! So are you saying it’s purely for money? No… more space! But, by doing so you just happen to create rather a lot of equity in your home. It ‘coincidently’ makes good  nancial sense. Unless you just sell it on, of course.

What about the bad press? People will always be people; they will make a mountain out of a basement, then they will turn around and build one themselves. No one wants to live next door to a basement being dug… the noise for a start, do you think they will ban them eventually? They can’t, they’re largely permitted development and you can’t see them. As for the noise, they are no less noisy than digging your garden and they are a million times quieter than someone digging up the road. Trafc noise in London is more than the sound of a basement being dug. Anyway, we work 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, when everybody is at work.

50

Metropolitan Basements_v2.indd 50

Planning is not an issue then? There is no reason why it should be. Except listed buildings and even then it can be done. How long to build one? Depends on the size but let’s say 1220 weeks for the majority of houses in London. Who designs them? We have an architect who is rather experienced with them. He wrote a book: Architect Your Home by Hugo Tugman. There is a section in there all about basements too. You can buy it from www.anovabooks. com Don’t be put off by his picture, he is actually one of the nicest architects I’ve ever met. So what’s your parting shot to the basement critics and lovers alike? Well, not a parting shot - just a statement that the majority of people will eventually get a basement dug to gain that extra space, especially in the more afuent areas of London. Even if you are against it now, you will succumb in the months or years to come or the people that move into your house after you are gone will get one done. It’s just going to happen, like it or not, and it’s going to be widespread, just in the same way double glazing stated in the 70’s, but much less intrusive or visible because it’s underground!

WELL FURNISHED N

There are literally hundreds of interior stores in the Islington area but Black Swan Interiors, the largest modern furniture store in North London, carries an extensive, eclectic range of modern furniture at prices to suit all budgets. Tina Chen, one of Black Swan’s directors, discusses what’s on offer

estled off Islington’s Upper Street is the huge Black Swan Interiors showroom, the retail arm of Panache Casa. Specialising in contemporary furniture and lighting that incorporate fine detail and materials, Black Swan Interiors pride themselves on their quality products. The showroom houses all types of furniture from sofas and bedroom pieces to lights and rugs. A unique aspect of the business is that customers can put together room sets from the large variety of items on display, and can benefit from an interior design service and bespoke furniture. Whether a first-time home-buyer, a hotel, restaurant or interior designer, Black Swan have you covered. Tina, how did you get started in Black Swan Interiors? Have you always been interested in interiors? We have been involved in the furniture business for over ten years, primarily in furniture design and manufacturing and have branched out into retail over the last two years. I personally started the retail side of the business, and must confess to being an interior addict! My favourite magazine is Elle Decoration. Your home is a lifestyle statement and should be in harmony with your character as – after all – you have to live in it.

What are your best-selling pieces? We do extremely well with our dining sets and our wide range of lighting as they are all very high quality with great design, but still priced very reasonably. Our upholstered products are also very popular as we have hundreds of fabric and leather choices for customers to cover their sofas, chairs and beds. How would you describe the company’s ‘style’? We specialise in contemporary and modern high quality items, although there are no real rules as to what is or isn’t ‘modern’ design, for example our Diva light is inspired by an original design that is now over 100 years old. The most important thing for us is that the different items of furniture, lighting, rugs and home accessories found in our store work together to enhance the beauty of your home. London is full of furniture and interior companies, what makes you unique in the field? Several things make us unique from other furniture stores. Most of our items are available from stock, we have a very large display area giving customers a huge choice to look at and we provide free parking to customers on-site – which is really handy in

London! However, the two things that really separate us from the crowd are our unrivalled prices and our eye-catching design and quality. What do you like about your Islington location? Islington is a great location for us as it is within reach of the City and West End and is easy to get to for both our retail and trade customers. It’s a great part of London surrounded by interesting shops and restaurants; I can’t think of anywhere better! 85 Canonbury Road, London N1 2DG 020 7226 1006 sales@blackswaninteriors.net blackswaninteriors.net

’m a big fan of websites that merge the offline world with the online. Online offers so much more productivity and immediacy. And to demonstrate that point, let me bring your attention to bivolino.com: the online shirt design website. It’s clear there’s a lot going on in the website, and to begin with, the amount of information may appear overpowering. But keep with it, and you’ll find a heap of features and a nifty tool to get your creative juices flowing. Although there are other products in their catalogue (ties, cufflinks, underwear etc.) their focus is on shirts for both men and women. Using their smart and 3D online tool, you can customise your shirt in almost every way. Ever heard of a Kent Piping collar or a Convertible Barrel cuff? The options are endless for a truly unique result. There are literally millions of variations. Added with the ability to include

CLOTHING YOU CAN DESIGN:

• Men’s Shirts • Women’s shirts • Boxers your initials to really make it your own, this online design store helps the picky shopper get what they want. All I need now is a few style tips – hang on, they’re included too! So, if you’re too busy to shop on the high street and want something absolutely unique, log on to bivolino.com and try your hand at shirt design.

he ‘school’ - developed in early 2009 - is a unique music establishment that introduces the fundamentals of music and music theory to babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in a totally original, educational and fun way. Taking inspiration from every era, style, and genre of music from Bach to The Beatles, Stravinsky to The Shins, Mozart to Miles Davis, Nursery Rhymes to Nelly Furtado - School of Rock-a-Bye Babies (SRBB) classes involve real instruments and live musicians, and is guaranteed to be an experience that both children and adults will truly enjoy! Each School of Rock-a-Bye Babies class is specifically tailored to the child’s age group and will introduce him/her to rhythm, melody and harmony through structured play and musical experimentation:

Birth to 9 months - Baby City Rollers 9 to 15 months - Toddling Wilburys 15 months to 2 years - New Kids on the Rock 2 to 4 years - Rock N’ Roll Pre-school All classes are taught by classically-trained musician, performer, and singer/songwriter Elizabeth A. Haydn-Jones, alongside her esteemed assistants who are trained musicians, dancers, and actors. Elizabeth started School of Rock-a-Bye Babies, following the birth of her son, as a way of combining her two passions: motherhood and music. After attending several ‘traditional’ baby music classes when her son was a few months old, Elizabeth felt there was a need for a music class that was stimulating, educational and fun for both child and adult. Wanting her son to be exposed to all music - in all its complexity - and not just cutesy kids’ stuff, Elizabeth started writing songs and games while developing a programme of teaching to bring a different type of music class to her local area. SRBB is growing, and with classes running in Maida Vale and Kensal Rise to name a few, there’s no excuse not to join in the fun. schoolofrockabyebabies.com

eaving the shadows of New York’s towering skyscrapers, we headed south to the nation’s capital, Washington DC, to view the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the White House. As we left the eastern seaboard and crossed the Appalachian Mountains we entered music enthusiasts’ America, stopping at Tennessee, home of country music at ‘The Grand Ole Opry’ and Memphis, ‘the home of blues’, before turning south to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. For the next three days we traversed the wide open expanse that is Texas, where they prove that ‘Everything’s bigger in Texas’. Big cowboy hats, big belt buckles, big trucks and big hair were all around. We explored the Alamo, historic landmark in Texas’ war for independence from Mexico in 1836, before heading into Native American territory. Aztec Ruins National Monument and Mesa Verda National Park offered a glimpse into the lives of the previous occupiers of these lands and their cliff dwellings. This was topped by actually visiting and staying with Native Americans at Monument Valley where we were entertained by traditional Navajo dancing and stayed in a ‘hogan’ (traditional home). Next stop the Grand Canyon with its amazing display of colours at sunrise and sunset, as well as hikes for those of us adventurous enough to journey down. We passed through Death Valley, the lowest point in North America, before reaching Las Vegas, my highest point! Entertainment, lights, restaurants, you name it, they do it! Our journey finished by heading into the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite National Park with its amazing granite walls and thundering waterfalls before arriving in San Francisco, America’s most beautiful city….and the end of an epic adventure!” Tim travelled on Intrepid Travel’s 22-day Roadtrip America Westbound costing £1410 per person (excluding international flights.) To do

Be sure to make the most of the Old Town (Vieux Nice). Beneath the hill is a maze of streets and alleys, with numerous quaint houses, boutiques and a fabulously French daily ower and fruit market of the Cours Saleya. Do as the locals do and walk along the pathway that leads from Coco Beach by the Sentier Littoral cliff half way to Villefranche, via Cap de Nice. Famous for its annual lm festival, experience the year-round glamour of Cannes. A 30 minute trainride away, the city offers much in the way of elite shopping and dining. If you’ve not yet tired of the glitz, head to Monaco, a tiny principality and its own world, lled with luxurious casinos, upscale shopping, a thriving nightlife and world-famous auto racing. Not far is the equally (if not moreso) dazzling St Tropez, the other playground to jetsetters, fashion models, and millionaires but also boasts a pictaresque harbour and world-famous art museum.

“Is this the most ingenious aquarium in the world?” S

tandard aquariums are made from sheets of glass. We only ever use acrylic. Why? Because it’s 10 times stronger than glass, which is important. Just ask anyone who’s broken a glass aquarium and flooded their home. Did you know it’s also noticeably clearer? Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. Glass only allows 70% of light to pass through and thick glass always has a green tint. With an acrylic biOrb it’s been said that “it’s like watching fish in high-definition”.

The truth about filters

Many traditional aquariums have a filter stuck to the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, a biOrb filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve also made it easy Inside the patented biOrb filter

REEF ONE.indd 1

to replace. It takes seconds and you only need to do it every four to six weeks.

Slim built-in lighting

It’s so slim you’d be forgiven for not noticing it was there. An LED light is neatly built in to the lid of your biOrb.

Folklore vs science, you decide

Fish keeping folklore says that you must have a large surface area of water in order to have good water oxygenation. That’s why standard aquariums are rectangular with the long edge at the top. Like many folklores it’s not the full story. You can have 100% water oxygenation, by design and engineering. But don’t take our word for it. We asked the renowned University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover, Germany to do an independent test against a standard rectangular aquarium and this is what they told us, word for word. “The oxygen concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were higher than in the rectangular aquarium. The oxygen

concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were probably higher due to the vigorous aeration and turbulence. This keeps the gases in equilibrium with the air above the water surface. This caused the gases to be well distributed and redundant gases to be easily expelled.”

Everything you’ll need, in one box

When you buy a biOrb you’ll get everything you need to start your aquarium. You won’t need to go shopping for any extra parts and you’ll get full instructions to help you on your way. Just add water and fish. Then sit back and enjoy the magic of keeping fish without having to do lots of work.

There’s a biOrb for you

biOrbs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Ask at your local aquatics store or you can view the whole range online at www.reef-one.com

95% LTV First Time Buyer Mortgages

TWO NEW MORTGAGE OFFER OPPORTUNITY FOR FTBS WITH SMALL DEPOSITS

I

ndependent mortgage advisor John Charcol is now delighted to be able to exclusively offer buyers in England and Wales two very innovative, but also very different, solutions for FTBs with only a 5% deposit. One of these new mortgages requires at least one family member to be involved and has a variable rate of only 3.95% and no arrangement fee. The other requires no family involvement and is a  xed rate of 6.49% until 2015 with a very low arrangement fee of £195. OPTION 1 “Family Offset mortgage has an initial rate of 3.95%, a 0.5% discount off its SVR for 3 or 5 years (Newbury has one of the lower SVRs amongst building societies). There is no arrangement fee and the Early Repayment Charges is only 1% in 3 or 5 years respectively, but unlimited Early Repayment Charges free part repayments are allowed. The maximum loan is £300,000. “The basis of this 95% LTV Family Offset mortgage is that one or two family members must deposit a total of 20% of the purchase price with the lender, thus reducing the net loan from the lender’s risk perspective to 75% because it takes a charge on the savings. OPTION 2 “The other equally innovative 95% LTV FTB mortgage has a xed rate of 6.49% to 30/4/15. The arrangement fee is only £195 and the early repayment charge is 2% during the xed rate term, although ERC free overpayments of up to 10% p.a. can be made. The maximum loan is £500,000 and the innovation with this mortgage is the way affordability is calculated. “This mortgage is called the ‘Rent to Buy’ Mortgage because affordability is based on the FTB’s rental payment history, which must cover a period of at least 1 year. The maximum monthly mortgage payment will be whatever rent the FTB has been paying. The ability to pay the relevant amount of rent for at least a year provides robust evidence of a similar ability to afford an equivalent monthly mortgage payment. Your initial mortgage consultation is obligation free. There will be a minimum fee for our mortgage service of £450, of which £150 is payable when you apply, and we will retain the commission from the mortgage lender. Alternatively, you can choose the fee only option which is typically 0.65% of the amount borrowed. The precise amount will depend on your circumstances and mortgage loan amount, and will be discussed and agreed before you make a mortgage application. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPAYMENTS ON A MORTGAGE OR ANY DEBT SECURED ON IT

ANDREW FLINT FROM COLMAN COYLE, GIVES HIS EXPERT ADVICE ON ALL YOUR LEGAL PROPERTY QUESTIONS I am buying a at and wanted to know whether I ought to be arranging buildings insurance? Generally, no. In most cases the Lease will provide for the freeholder to insure the building on a block policy. Your solicitor will need to see a copy of the up to date buildings insurance policy schedule to check that the policy is in force and will also need to see a copy of the policy wording or a summary of cover to check that the building has been insured on a comprehensive basis including all usual domestic risks. In a lot of cases, your interest as a lessee and that of your mortgage company will automatically be noted on the policy but sometimes, your solicitor will need to request that this be done. There are some Leases which require individual lessees to insure their own ats and in these cases your solicitor will not only need to see details of the insurance that you have arranged but will also need to see details of the insurance for the other at. Fortunately, when this does occur, it tends to be just with buildings that have been divided into two ats so usually it is quite easy to obtain details of the other at owners’ policy. It is also advisable in these cases to take out something called an insurance indemnity policy which will provide cover in the event that the other at or ats fails to insure and a claim would otherwise be made on that neighbour’s policy.

T

he rental market in St Johns Wood, Regents Park and Maida Vale remains buoyant as we move towards the Autumn months. Traditionally September is a busy market with strong demand from families looking for houses and ats. Transaction levels continue to increase in line with seasonal trends. Stock levels have slowly improved throughout the  rst half of 2011, and are now 20% higher in London compared with last year. Although demand remains strong in most areas, stock increases are now having a real impact on rents. Year over year average rents are now up 6.7 percent across London although the rate in growth has slowed in recent months. Improvements in stock levels have also taken some of the heat out of the transaction process, which until recently was regularly seeing multiple offers on the same day and very few deals going for much below asking price. It is certainly still a landlord’s market, but tenants are starting to get a taste for choice again. Taken together, the lettings market continues to perform strongly and while we are seeing the heat coming

out of some areas, fundamentals remain sound and we anticipate the market to remain vibrant for the rest of 2011. St John’s Wood in particular presents a great opportunity for investors as well as those looking for a home. The area remains a solid investment for those looking for good rental yields, offering everything from good deals on one bedroom properties to a solid weekly income on larger houses which are popular with families and those recently relocated to the city from abroad. While costs can be high, value is never in doubt. St John’s Wood is one of the most popular areas in London for afuent families and provides excellent links to Canary Wharf, Soho and Mayfair, coupled with a real sense of community. Landlords are beneting from rising rentals and almost non-existent void periods in some cases. This considerably improves yields on their investments. We are therefore seeing a rise again in international buyers and investment landlords. Chloe Green Hamptons International St John’s Wood 020 7722 2131 81
