have returned from LA and what to make of my homecoming? I’ve been away a mere two months and yet new shops, popups and businesses abound. The rate of gentrification in the area seems to have reached an all-time high (if that’s possible) and seems testimony enough that London as a whole is a strong contender for the title of most cosmopolitan capital in the world. It never ceases to amaze me, for example, what a wonderfully diverse array of different cuisines are available right on our collective doorstep.

Meanwhile, Gemma Billington speaks to Julian Hawkins, founder of photography workshop Shadows & Light, about why Muswell Hill is the perfect place to get snapping (P38) and Gareth Fitzgerald reviews Trishna in Marylebone Village (P40). The season’s on the turn and North West London’s looking better every day. It’s great to be back...

Y

We chat to Katie Melua – the ex Maida Vale resident still comes back to visit often– Little Venice being one of her favourite spots in the city (P12). I’m also pleased to be able to reveal some of the pro make-up tips of the amazing Billie Crago at The Chapel salon (P34) – a surefire short-cut to the salon’s signature ‘natural but flawless’ look.

Galvanised by a renewed awareness of the constant reinvention of the local area, we’ve hit the ground running with this, the second of our Spring issues. Our shoot this month takes in the latest fashion trend, for retro-inspired jewellery: we’re especially loving the springtime pastel palette of some of the pieces we’ve selected (P20).

INTERVIEW KATIE MELUA APR 2012.indd 10

29/03/2012 19:43

INTERVIEW

RETURN OF THE SONGBIRD As songstress Katie Melua prepares to return to the stage, she takes time to chat with Katie Randall about her new album, world records and gardening...

S

urprisingly, Katie Melua still gets nervous. The day we meet she is about to record a speech on camera for TEDxTblisi, a non-profit organisation dedicated to spreading worthwhile ideas. She readily admits that it’s a rather intimidating prospect. When a woman is as adventurous and vibrant as Melua - she’s a scuba diver, used to be a world record holder and used to play in burntout cars as a child - it’s refreshing to discover that she suffers from those pesky butterflies just like the rest of us. The singer-songwriter blasted into the limelight in November 2003, wowing audiences with her distinctive voice and debut album Call Off the Search when she was just eighteen. Nine years later she shows no signs of slowing down. Melua’s fifth album, Secret Symphony, produced by longtime collaborator Mike Batt, was released last month, and she’s set to tour the UK and Europe this autumn. When she talks about her music, it’s with a gutsy enthusiasm. “Last year I toured and it was amazing for me because it had been postponed due to an illness the year before. It felt amazing to be on stage, and that feeling was so fantastic that I wanted to make another album.” The end result is a blend of lilting orchestral arrangements and stripped back, bluesy vocals, and features

contributions from some stellar writing talent - including Francoise Hardy, who penned the coy All Over the World. “I wanted to make quite a natural album, and so in that sense I decided not to write songs,” Katie reveals. “For me, writing is quite difficult. I love it and it is what I live for, but singing is a lot easier for me.” The 27 year-old says that singing was her passion from the moment her father brought home a video camera when she was just seven years old. “I saw this thing [the camera] and was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to be on television!’” she laughs. Family is still very important to the artist. She was born in Georgia but her parents moved the family to Belfast in the early nineties when their native country descended into civil war. Her father, whom she calls ‘an incredible person’, got a job in Northern Ireland and the Meluas packed up. “Some people have described it as going from the frying pan into the fire, but actually Belfast was much better in terms of education, healthcare and housing.” she says. The Meluas moved to Surrey when Katie was thirteen, then to London shortly afterwards. It was her father who fed his daughter’s passion for music during this time, and Melua claims today that “Music is the thing that really 11

INTERVIEW

kept me sane, it remained the constant. Dad saw I was obsessed with music and bought me a little piano and when I was fifteen, he bought me a computer with the music sequencing software Cubase on it.” Her mother also played a part, introducing her daughter to Beethoven. “My first musical memory is of Moonlight Sonata,” Melua says, “a piece of music that blew my mind and still inspires me today.” When they first moved to London, the family lived in Maida Vale and, even though she has since left the area, W9 remains one of Melua’s favourite haunts. “It’s a great part of town,” she says, “Little Venice is so gorgeous and I love all the little restaurants along the canal.” Now living in West London, the singer recently announced her engagement to former World Superbike champion James Toseland. When asked if his proposal was a surprise, Katie admits that she had no idea. “We went on holiday and you just hope, but you don’t dare expect.” Ideally, she tells me, she would like to find a venue close to London for the big day. A romantic at heart, Katie admits she finds it easiest to pen songs about love, “That’s the biggest drama in everyday

life.” In fact, it’s Melua’s lust for life that strikes me during our interview. Growing up in Georgia, the youngster would always be getting into ‘scraps’ and have adventures outdoors. “When I was a kid, the electricity would go out every night,” Katie explains, “It was so exciting. You got used to living on the edge.” Until recently, the singer held the world record for playing the ‘deepest gig’, performing two 40-minute sets at the bottom of the North Sea. “We took a helicopter out there, it was completely remote. Then we got into this rickety lift which took ten minutes to go down.” I suggest that it’s a quirky thing for a pop star to do and she laughs in agreement, comfortable as always in her own skin. It appears that Katie Melua is back on the scene and doing what she does best. What’s her hope for the future? “I’d love people to discover this album through word of mouth and recommendation,” says the artist. We’re certain that it’ll get people talking. Secret Symphony is out now on Dramatico. See katiemelua.com for more details and tour dates.

KING ROAD OF THE

Abbey Road Studios recently celebrated its 80th birthday. To mark it, we delved into the listed building’s history as one of London’s premier musical landmarks...

T

he Beatles’ final recorded album was released in 1969; called Abbey Road, it would go on to be number 14 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time’. Like everything the Beatles did, it also made waves in the music industry and - importantly - changed the name of the studios in which the album was recorded, cementing the band in Britain’s musical legacy forever. EMI Studios became Abbey Road Studios in late 1969. Today the mere mention of the name is enough to excite most musicians into enthusiastic discussion of the many legendary albums made

there. Despite its debt to the Beatles, Abbey Road Studios has been serving the music industry for much longer than the Fab Four themselves, celebrating its 80th anniversary at the end of last year. In honour of the occasion, this March saw the general public invited to cross the threshold for a series of presentations detailing the studio’s history. Sir Paul McCartney also reached out to wish Abbey Road an extremely happy birthday, saying, “I have so many special memories from there and it’s still such a great studio today. I wish Abbey Road all the best for another 80 rocking years.”

The opportunity to enter the recording studios was an extremely rare chance to catch a glimpse of what goes on inside its walls. The likes of the Beatles, the Hollies, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers have recorded music here; Sir Cliff Richard even recorded his first number one single, Living Doll, at Abbey Road. In 2006, when the studios were celebrating their 75th anniversary, he said to Music Week, “Recording in those early days was exciting and fun – a brand new experience...I always loved Studio Two.” The latest anniversary event was also a chance to get up close and 15

OVER THE NEXT SEVEN YEARS THE BEATLES WOULD RETURN TO ABBEY ROAD FOR EVERY ONE OF THEIR STUDIO ALBUMS, SETTING A NEW STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW

personal with the instruments and studio equipment, and to hear from Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan, authors of the critically acclaimed Recording the Beatles. The pair shared some of the findings of their twenty years of research into EMI history. Abbey Road Studios has its earliest roots in classical music, the premises having originally been acquired and converted into studios in 1931 by the Gramophone Company, a predecessor of EMI. In the 1930s, legendary EMI engineer Alan Blumein and his team at the studios were at the forefront of recording technology, inventing equipment that became industry standard for decades. Automatic double tracking was also invented there. Fast forward to June 6, 1962, when a young group by the name of the Beatles arrived at the studios to make a test recording for producer George Martin. Over the next seven years they would return to Abbey Road for every one of their studio albums, setting a new standard of excellence for others to follow. In 1973, Pink Floyd completed Dark Side of the Moon at the studios; the record went on to occupy the US Billboard charts for 741 consecutive weeks. It was in the 1980’s that Abbey Road established itself as a premier location for film scoring in the UK, with John Williams using the studio to record all but one of the Star Wars scores. Later, Howard Shore would use Abbey Road to record the score for the Lord of The Rings trilogy. More recently still, the score for the King’s Speech was recorded there by top Hollywood composer Alexandre Desplat - using the original royal microphones used by King George VI. The first purpose-built recording studio in the world, Abbey Road Studios continues to pioneer and produce some of the world’s best loved music. Now Grade II-listed, both the building and the famous zebra crossing outside have had a tumultuous past, with several campaigns popping up as recently as 2010, when it was feared that EMI would sell the studios due to financial difficulties. Today, however, Abbey Road Studios remains firmly in the hands of EMI - and every year over 250,000 people visit the crossing to imitate the famous Beatles album cover. Something tells us Sir Paul was right: Abbey Road Studios will surely still be rocking and rolling 80 years from now. abbeyroad.com, Abbey Road Studios, 3 Abbey Road, NW8 9AY

HANNAH

WARNERch t a w o t e n o r e n ig : Jewellery Des

Have you always been interested in jewellery? When did you decide that it would be your career? I have always loved jewellery but it wasn’t until I went travelling that I became interested in the different varieties of styles and materials. I did a foundation degree at Wimbledon Art School where I originally wanted to pursue fine art painting, but after experimenting with jewellery for a couple of weeks, I knew that I wanted to continue learning the trade. What inspires you? I get inspiration from my surroundings and other cultures; whether it be details found on animal skulls, teeth or bones or bold, linear shapes in surrounding cityscapes. I love contrasting textures/ shapes and through detailed drawings create a range of different designs. How would you describe your style? Organic, raw, textural and personal to each wearer. What is the design process; from conception to finished product? I am constantly gathering inspiration for my next collections. My studio walls are covered in developed images from fashion, flowers, tattoo designs and architecture from around the world. I develop photographs, make montages, sketch and experiment with samples in 3D. I work wih metal finishing in silver, gold and black rhodium. What are some of your favourite pieces from your recent collection? I loved the caged ring and how it wraps up the whole finger with

a secret hinge. The top finger arrow ring is another favourite because it decorates the top part of your finger. I love having as much of the finger covered in metal as possible! What are your favourites part of London and what influence has the city had on your work? I love East London, where I live and where my studio is. It has a very creative feel with many artists, galleries and restaurants. I also love Hampstead Heath where there are such great views of London, it’s nice to have that open space away from the busy city. Do you have a favourite jewellery designer? I love Gregg Wolfs designs. He is an American jeweller who I spent time with in NYC and who helped me out a lot. His pieces are very powerful. Can you tell us about your collaboration with model and artist Jamie Strachan? Jamie, myself and Behati Prinsloo are working on a range of leather jackets incorporating animal skins and a small range of jewellery. This will be being launched before the summer this year. The jackets are amazing! Do you have any more fashion collaborations in the pipeline? I am working with make up artist Holly Silius on a new precious metal nail brand called H&H. They are inspired by nature and the nails are created in solid metal. They are so nice to wear so watch out for them! I am also designing a headband and hairslide for new affordable and amazing fashion line THREE FLOOR, which is very exciting. hannahwarner.com

ALL MADE UP

Helen Baron finds out Billie Crago of The Chapel’s top tips for bridal make-up…

W

ith a wedding looming and so many of the finer details still to sort, I headed down to The Chapel to see if they could provide the answer to my beauty prayers. I’m already a fully signed-up fan of the hair salon, so was delighted to discover they also offer make-up services. I had a consultation with Billie who is also the salon director. Although I had a bridal session, the tips she shared with me are applicable for any occasion, especially if you’re after a pared-down, more natural look. All products by Becca beccacosmetics.com/uk/

Here’s Billie’s how-to guide:

(great for older skin where powder may enhance fine lines). It also mattifies so is great for oily t-zones.

to aid tissue repair and increase collagen renewal. It’s also my favourite because it increases moisture-holding capacity.

COVER

EYE SHADOW

‘Luminous Skin Colour’ is sheer and ensures that unblemished areas are as natural as possible while acting as a moisturiser and sunscreen. Further coverage can be added using the ‘Becca Stick Foundation’ for redness. ‘Becca Fine Loose Finishing Powder’ sets all of the above. This is the finest loose powder in the world! Micro-milled it ensures an undetectable, feather light finish. This makes it touch proof (great for weddings) and semi water resistant even in tropical humidity.

If you are bored of your regular eye shadow then ‘Crème Eye Colour’ is refreshingly modern; like Vaseline with a high pigment. It’s easy to apply - no blending needed - so even those of you that say you’re useless at make-up can get a beautiful, even finish. Another pointer is to dab a little of it on the lips to enhance a pout and give a 60’s feel.

PREPPING THE SKIN Blur away fine lines and minimise pores using wonder product ‘Line and Pore Corrector’. It lends a soft filter effect to skin in the same way a good camera can. It can be used as an under-eye concealer, locking any products on top of it in place

HIGHLIGHTER There are many highlighters on the market however the Becca one is truly the best. More dewy than sparkly, it gives the most impressive natural glow and contains SPF 25 and antioxidants A, B, D and E

JEWEL DUST If applied with a soft brush, ‘Jewel Dust’ is like barely-there fairy dust. Add over the top of the Crème Eye Colour to give the effect of gold leaf. The most versatile of shadows, it doubles as a superb eyeliner, perfect for precision work. thechapel.co.uk/islington ,394-396 St John Street, EC1V 4NJ 020 7520 0460

hen we meet over a coffee, it’s immediately apparent that Julian Hawkins is a man who loves his profession. Before we’ve even sat down, the photographer is showing me shots of a disused outdoor pool’s reflection, taken on his iPhone. I confess to being a camera phone obsessive myself, but query whether this new breed of amateur snappers is an irritation to the professionals - he disagrees. Though he acknowledges the ‘secretive’ nature of some photographers when it comes to their trade and skills, Julian’s passion for the subject lies in the opportunity it gives him to work with and teach others. His obsession started at a young age through his parent’s National Geographic subscription, “I used to look forward to receiving it when I was a kid; the pictures would always take my breath

London provides a large source of inspiration for the workshops and Muswell Hill is of particular significance to Julian, who has lived in the area for 20 years. “I love it here” he says, “in summer, at nighttime, I can sit in the back garden and not hear any traffic at all. I can walk to Highgate tube station in 12 minutes and can walk there through the woods - how many places in London can I do that?” One of Julian’s favourite places in north London, the Phoneix Cinema, will be hosting an exhibition of his and selected student’s work later this year. Whether taking a group to shoot autumn landscapes on Hampstead Heath or to experience the chaos of Semana Santa in Seville, it is Julian’s passion for his students and for nurturing their creativity, that shines through. slworkshops.co.uk 39

FEELING

HAUTE

Gareth Fitzgerald samples the flavours of South West India in Marylebone Village

A

s lovers of Southern Indian flavours, few menus have caught the attention of my dinner guest and I as readily as Trishna’s. Our anticipation increased as we received several strong recommendations from fellow enthusiasts in the days leading up to our visit and learnt that our destination was part of the same family of restaurants as Trishna in Mumbai – a world renowned seafood restaurant. The London branch opened towards the end of 2009 attracting considerable media attention. Stepping out of our cab into Marylebone Village, we were welcomed into a warm and elegant restaurant with two well furnished dining rooms of marble, oak and contemporary brickwork. The atmosphere is refined but relaxed, as is the restaurant’s sommelier who runs the restaurant in partnership with her brother, the head chef. The main dining areas are vibrant, with seating for sixty, and there is also 40

FOOD DPS SPOTLIGHT APR 2012.indd 40

29/03/2012 20:24

FOOD & DRINK more intimate private dining for up to twelve downstairs. Much of Trishna’s menu is drawn from the Ratnigiri region. These authentic dishes are given a contemporary twist and there are also some more familiar sounding dishes that have been given a gourmet treatment. We decided to make the most of the opportunity to sample the exciting options on offer and have the Koliwada tasting menu. Whilst selecting our dishes we enjoyed Indian reflections of classic cocktails. A Sloane Rum Fashioned (Angostura 1919 premium rum slowly stirred over demerara sugar in angostura bitter, orange bitter oil and a cherry) is a great turn on the ever popular Old Fashioned. In a similar vein, my guest enjoyed a Bloody Indian (tamarind, cumin, black pepper, coriander, tomato juice and a large measure of Ketel One vodka). There are an abundance of interesting and well-selected turns on classics and an excellent selection of Martinis includes a Mango Chutney Martini and a Merlot Martini. Trishna retains some of the rituals that we most associate with Indian food in England. For instance, we appreciated the discreet delivery of elegantly folded poppadoms to our table, appearing just as promptly as is tradition in your local Indian restaurant, but with accompanying sauces befitting this high end restaurant such as a shrimp and tomato chutney and a coriander mint sauce.

Our selection from the tasting menu focused on the seafood roots of the restaurant in Mumbai. The Koliwada Shrimp and Lobster with carum seed, garlic and sweet red chilli chutney was a light and beautifully flavoured dish with which to start our meal and we very much appreciated the accompanying Bandol Rose. The seafood was excellent throughout, however, a soft and tender, spiced lamb chop was also a stand-out dish, marinaded in kashmiri chilli, mustard and ginger. My sea bream was melt in the mouth – minty and zesty with fresh coriander and lime, in a thick green chilli masala paste. The Kachumber (imagine an Indian take on salsa) provided a fresh and fruity complement. The Dorset brown crab main was perfectly spiced, with the right level of heat, peppery and not too creamy. There was a complete absence of the oiliness and heaviness that one associates with the food of the local curry house, this lightness and subtlety was nowhere better exemplified than in the curried crab. Huge care and enthusiasm has gone into the wine list and the accompaniments to each course of the tasting menu. The wines are sourced from boutique producers from all over the globe. We finished up with a mango rice pudding that was creamy but fruity and sweet with a hint of chilli oil, and a light cardamom cake with a subtle flavour. We had a fantastic evening at Trishna and can see why the restaurant was full even - Trishna is a restaurant which, like the flavours of its dishes, has great balance – relaxed yet exciting, innovative but unpretentious.

MEEK AND WILD FISHMONGERS

MEAT PEOPLE A brand new concept of steak house has launched on Essex Road. Formerly Alfredo’s, the gorgeous Grade II listed building has been re-vamped into a stylish, sophisticated steak & cocktails joint. Serving traditional pork belly and rib eye steak dishes, the restaurant also caters for the more daring carnivore with a speciality meats menu of springbok and kangaroo. meatpeople.co.uk, 4-6 Essex Road, Islington N1 8LN

After 22 years in the fishmonger trade, Paul Meek has decided to set up on his own. Meek and Wild Fishmongers opened earlier this year and offers the residents of Highbury the freshest, best-quality produce available. The majority of fish is sourced from Cornwall, and newly appointed chef Craig Keane (from pop-up food revolutionaries House of Umami) has devised a delectable deli menu of mackerel pâté and crab arancini. 13 Highbury Park, Highbury Barn, N5 1QJ, Open Tue-Fri 8am-6pm and Sat 8am- 5.30pm

t was an unseasonably warm evening as my dining accomplice and I ambled along Upper Street to our venue. The Almeida’s menu is described as being a modern take on traditional French cuisine, so it’s at this juncture that I should probably mention, perhaps due to my own callous preconceptions, I’d had in my head preconceived notions about French restaurants. Specifically, that their staff and regular attendees would look down their nose at me and my common English palette and as such it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I entered the establishment. I couldn’t have been more wrong - the staff were very welcoming and hospitable, leaving my ill-founded national stereotyping in tatters. In addition to the bonhomie of our hosts, the Almeida is situated eponymously on Almeida Street and directly opposite the Almeida Theatre, making it an incredibly convenient spot for those who like to indulge in dinner and a show. As it was, we didn’t get a chance to view the productions on offer across the street, so we instead turned our attention to the leading man in this ensemble cast: Alan Jones, the head chef, has created a menu full of simple yet refined classics. our appetites racing, champagne and canapés were provided. As a curtain raiser, I plumped for the terrine of foie gras with an apple and walnut salad and toasted figbread, while my friend decided on sautéed mushrooms, served on a toasted brioche with a poached egg. The second act comprised venison à la bourguignonne with gratin dauphinois and one of the specials, an angus beef fillet with cep, smoked bacon, celeriac purée and truffle sauce. The venison held its gamey but not overpowering flavour beautifully in the bourguinonne sauce, and the gratin dauphinois was light but exceptionally satisfying. The angus beef was not to be outshone though and the celeriac purée was so light it was almost hovering. Feeling as though it would be rude to leave before the end, I selected a show-stopping crème brulée and mon ami had an incredibly decadent looking chocolate fondant. With the breathtaking food, relaxed and mature atmosphere and modern, chic décor, the Almeida Restaurant and Bar really is a place to come for a more urbane evening out, without the pomposity which that implies. All in all, if it weren’t for the fact that I thought I might disturb the other patrons, I would have given a standing ovation and demanded an encore. CURTAIN CALL

We chat with Prêt À Vivre founder Joanne Cassabois on her bespoke fabric company and what makes it stand out from the crowd... When did you start the company? I set up in 1996 and have done everything in the company but am now concentrating on the showrooms, working on the ranges, marketing and merchandising. In a nutshell, how would you describe Prêt À Vivre? We obviously offer a great service in made-to-measure curtains and blinds with a free measuring service plus poles, tracks, cushions, headboards and valances. However, what makes the experience so different from your average curtain shop is the way in which the ranges are presented and the level of help and design advice. When you step inside the showroom, you are not surrounded by pattern books, just walls of curtains and fabrics. The range is wide enough to find something to suit all styles and budgets, but not so great that you are confused and lost. In addition, the range is shown either made-up as a curtain or blind or hanging as a display of fabric so you can see what it looks like on a large scale. Our staff can come up with ideas to customise your curtains or blinds to personalise your window treatment without costing a fortune.

Islington and the fantastic mix of shops, cafés and restaurants. Do your styles change with seasons? No - our products are not impulse buys but an investment. It is easier and cheaper to change the colour of the walls or cushions and throws than to change your window dressings. This is why so many of our clients choose very neutral colours to blend in with the walls and add accents of colour with borders which are easier to change.

What is a typical day like for you? Hectic! I am usually in one of the showrooms. I love being on the front line - it is the contact with the customers that makes the job so special. You have three showrooms across London. What do you like about the Islington area? I work across all three showrooms as it is important to understand each client base (which is so different in each area) and what they are looking for. I love

What are some of your most popular designs? Simple, classic elegant cottons, linen mixes and 100% linens. Not forgetting the sumptuous 100% dupion silks. How do you source your fabrics? We source direct from mills in Europe. We make up everything to see how the fabric behaves and hangs before introducing it into the range. Most of the linen comes from northern France and Belgium which is considered to be much better quality than the linens produced in Eastern Europe. pretavivre.com, 69 Cross Street, Islington, N1 2BB

YOUR SHORT GUIDE TO

MARRAKECH RED SKY AT NIGHT There’s something so intoxicatingly exotic and sensuous about Marrakech. Brimming with history, the old city with its bustling medina conceals a great many chic boutique hotels. A colourful array of traditional Arab souks mix with new wave riads, restaurants and a vibrant nightlife to create a true traveller’s paradise.

WHERE TO STAY StudioHOPSCOTCH’s emerging design team recently introduced the Bab Hotel and ‘Skybab’ rooftop bar, set against the infamous ‘red city’ skyline. Reworking the dark shell of the original Hotel Grand Sud, the team drew inspiration from the light and space revealed when

all the non-structural elements of the old building were removed – the result is an innovative urban hotel in the heart of Marrakech’s ‘new town’ quarter, Gueliz. Demonstrating a mix of English, French and Moroccan influences, the Bab Hotel has already positioned itself as the city’s latest destination hotspot, drawing an exciting crowd that blurs the boundaries between bohemian, business-minded and all out rock ‘n’ roll cool. Ever-changing art exhibitions, rockarchive photography and suspended lights formed from recycled plastics add to the fun of the décor. Local artisans were carefully commissioned from the local souks to create certain decorative elements. The 45 loft-living inspired monochrome bedrooms are luxuriously spacious and feature white marble or slate bathrooms and dressing rooms. Meanwhile, the newly opened basement houses the Carlota Paris Spa with traditional Hammam and massage rooms. The top floor holds the amazing rooftop bar

WHILE YOU’RE THERE… 1. MAJORELLE GARDEN Privately owned by fashion designer and long-time Marrakech resident Yves Saint Laurent, the Majorelle Garden was created in the 1930s by two generations of French artists, Louis Majorelle and his son Jacques. jardinmajorelle.com

2. EL BAHIA PALACE A palace and gardens built in the late 19th century, the name means ‘brilliance’. As in other buildings of the period in other countries, it was intended to capture the essence of the Islamic and Moroccan styles, and thus provides a perfect example of historic local architecture and design, complete with marble floors, painted ceilings and tiled panels.

3. DJEMAA EL-FNA This is the main open space in Marrakech where you’ll see typical Moroccan fare – snake-charmers, scribes, herbalists and astrologers. In the evenings, the square is enlivened by al fresco eating and a plethora of entertainment, from acrobats to storytellers and magicians.

(Skybab) with its relaxing day beds and cocktail culture. The alluring mix is completed by the forthcoming Bab gym and concept store, full of interesting and artistic finds. Rooms start at £150 per night, babhotel-marrakech.com

THE LOCATION A 15 minute drive from Faro Airport, through a Beverley Hills-esque expanse of golf courses and highways. Monte da Quinta is set in the luscious and prestigious estate of Quinta da Lago at the heart of the natural park of Rio Formosa. It’s just metres away from the beach and surrounded by the best golf courses in Europe.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS A grand entrance with tree-lined corridors and impressive artwork. Monte da Quinta has its own village of residential townhouse villas for those wanting a little more exclusivity; each is individually designed with its own private pool and access into the main hotel.

THE ROOM Traditional meets modern: exotic wood furniture and a romantic patio leading to the verdant gardens but not without a fully modified kitchen plus high-tech audio visual equipment.

WHAT TO DO No problem filling the schedule: from spa treatments, personal trainer sessions, bike tours and horse riding trails there’s plenty to do. Enjoy lunch at the poolside grill and bar, followed by a bike tour around the thriving Rio Formaso Park, home to hundreds of species of bird and wildlife. Take a boat ride along the lake which runs through the golf courses and local houses. At sunset, embark on a gentle horse ride out into the woods with the Pinetrees Riding Centre.

SPA The Magnolia Spa located within the resort offers a range of heavenly treatments, an indoor heated pool, saunas, jacuzzis and gym. Try the head and shoulder massage in one of three beautiful massage rooms – it’s a perfect way to round off the afternoon.

Monarch, the scheduled leisure airline, operates flights to Faro from Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester airports with fares, including taxes, starting from £36.99 one way (£63.99 return). monarch.co.uk, mqclub.com Monte Da Quinta, Av Andre Jordan, Quinta do Lago 8135-909, Portugal

LOCAL FOCUS

CLOSE UP

Jewellery designer Amy Anderson began selling at Portobello market - she now runs her own store in Cheshire Street. We find out what attracted her to East London... How did the boutique get started? I always enjoyed selling at the market but found that I loved visual merchandising - I looked for a space where I could have a studio as well as a retail environment with more permanent possibilities for displays. I wandered past the street one day and saw the units; I just fell in love and waited about a year for one to become available. Why did you decide to open your flagship store in East London… I’ve lived in East London for about 13 years and always liked Cheshire Street. When I found the street it was in its infancy and there were only a handful of shops but I had a good feeling about it. The boutique looks so interesting…the interior seems to be something you’ve really thought about – how did you

come up with the concept? There wasn’t a concept- I just filled it slowly with things I love. I’ve always had a things for black and white stripes (hence the floor) and also a real love of having things suspended, so very little of the furniture touches the ground. Other than that it was just serendipitous finds and my obsession with antiques markets that gradually filled it up. What’s your approach to each jewellery collection – how do you stay inspired? I tend to start working with a theme each season- that’s the hardest bit to start. But then once I’ve settled on the idea the collection seems to flow and usually, I have too many ideas. Often I then hold things back for another season. Finding the initial inspiration is tricky- normally I just

brainstorm ideas I’m interested in and go through notebooks where I’ve scribbled things down. How would you describe your own personal style? In a word- eclectic. I have a very mixed wardrobe and will flit between simple modern and ornate antique in the blink of an eye. What do you love about being based in East London? The people- its generally very friendly and laid back. Yes, there are millions of annoying hipsters, but there are also a lot of incredibly brilliant creative and interesting people who you will have the most interesting conversations with. comfortstation.co.uk 22 Cheshire Street E2 6EH 020 7033 9099

INSPIRATIONS Favourite designer: I’m not sure I have just one- I have a lot of talented friends who make great things - I can’t get enough of Tamara Fogle handbags for instance and Lowie’s Turkish socks, my two current obsessions. In terms of my own style though, I’d say antiques markets and my collection of old books have way more influence on my collections than any current designer. Piece of jewellery you can’t not live without: My big walnut orbit earrings from our AW08 collection. Favourite song to dance to: Karl Denver- Wimoweh- it’s just ridiculous. Favourite film: Too many to pick- I always think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is massively underrated though. Best bar in your local area: My favourite pub is The Carpenters- its on the same road as our shop which automatically gives it double points. Favourite gallery: the Tate.

We are a group of 6 Leaseholders who have recently bought the freehold of our building. I am now selling my flat and have been told to extend my lease, which I did not think I needed to do given that we have bought the freehold? I have 78 years left to run on my lease. Can you help? This is a question that arises very regularly. Once leaseholders collectively buy the freehold interest of their block of flats (or building that has been converted into flats) they believe that their leases have come to an end or that nothing further needs to be done in respect of their lease because they now own a share of the freehold. This is not the case. When leaseholders collectively acquire the freehold, they buy the freehold subject to the leases of their flats. This means that the leases remain after the freehold has been bought. You each own the leasehold interest of your flats and you collectively own the freehold interest of the building. Owing to the fact that you have a “short” lease, the incoming Buyer’s solicitor probably does not wish to rely on the others to grant a lease term extension to the Buyer after the flat has been bought or it may be a requirement of the Buyer’s Lender that the lease be extended before the Lender is willing to lend to the Buyer etc. Before the freehold is acquired and generally at the outset of a freehold acquisition, you should agree whether or not it is your intention to extend leases and if so, on what terms. (You may have entered into an agreement in respect of such issues). For example, having just paid to acquire the freehold, you presumably will not wish to charge each other a premium to extend leases to say 999 years and reduce any ground rent to a nominal amount. Whilst there is an assumption that you will grant to yourselves new long leases without payment, please do bear in mind that if there is a time lapse between acquiring the freehold and granting the new leases, there may be disquiet amongst the leaseholders to not agree to charge nil premium when extending the lease.

ncredibly the spring market is already upon us, but does it come with the promise of more available properties? 2012 has been an extremely positive year so far, however, the underlying sentiment still remains the same - demand for property is unrelenting. Notwithstanding the traditional increase in valuations for this time of year, the numerous new properties we have taken on recently seem unable to satisfy the amount of buyers we have registered. With this in mind, Crouch End looks set for a particularly strong year. It is no surprise that last year’s predictions from Halifax of a mere 2% increase in London prices for 2012 have already been superseded. In some areas we have witnessed a visible jump in prices from last year and with properties naturally looking their best in spring, anyone buying or selling will be eager

MARKET INSIGHT With Miriame Oussellam, Sales Manager at Foxtons, Crouch End to make a move soon. Foxtons has covered Crouch End for the last decade, via our neighbouring offices, and due to its popularity and demand we have recently opened our brand new office in the heart of the area on Crouch End Hill. This means we can focus on the local market in more depth and serve the local community through an office on their doorstep, something we are very excited about. The area attracts both young professionals and young families who are drawn by its quiet residential feel, charming housing stock, great schools, its proximity to green open spaces and a wealth of independent boutiques, cafés and shops. There are also fantastic transport links into Moorgate and other parts of central London. Crouch End boasts a wealth of Victorian

and Edwardian houses and conversions which make fantastic homes and there are also pockets within the area with stunning Gothic style architecture. Crouch End is a hot spot extremely popular for first time buyers and the greater range of options for this core sector of the market can only be a huge positive for the area, especially with the recent return of 95% Loan-to-Value mortgage. So, the bottom line for a buyer is irrefutable– the buying process is highly competitive right now and looks set to continue. Therefore decisive action must be exercised to secure your dream home and putting in an asking price offers seems to be becoming the general norm! To any potential sellers now really is the perfect time to take advantage of the buyers out there all

eager to live in Crouch End and its surrounding areas and to celebrate our new office, we are still offering our 0% commission promotion!
