Editor’s Letter Let's hear it for dads
L
et’s talk about dads. Because, let’s face it, all the talk about mamas can mean that the other half of the babymaking equation doesn’t get much of a look-in. For me, co-parenting has been key to raising my daughter. Fifteen months into her life, I’m by no means her sole or main carer – her dad does his fair share of everything. It’s a shame, then, that legislation has failed to keep pace with the speed of societal change. If dads are ready and willing to muck in, why isn’t government doing more, and more quickly, to ensure they can? And it’s not just bad news for the men in our lives: the flipside to this lingering assumption that dads aren’t as important or as involved as mums in those early months is that many women feel trapped in a narrowly defined role they shouldn’t really have to play. Government and employers alike should be helping parents to share the load in new and clever ways, not coercing us into reproducing outworn stereotypes. A family support system is also a huge boon to any mama. At baby classes I’ve
met not only grandparents as carers but other family members too. It’s heartening to see; it’s how it should be. And of course, it also means that single parents and couples doing it without extra help are absolute heroes – we’ll be devoting real airtime to them soon. For this issue, though, it’s about dads. We have a dad diarist in acclaimed photographer (and Instagram sensation) Gerrard Gethings and we also speak to Al Ferguson, founder of The Dad Network, about the importance of helping dads navigate their way through fatherhood. With summer upon us and Father’s Day imminent, I hope you enjoy this issue out in the sunshine. In the meantime, let’s hear it for the dads…
