LETTER ABSOLUTELY’S favourite coastal pieces and places

W

e're nursing a slight obsession with Cornwall this month. Anywhere coastal in fact, but particularly Cornwall, after our recent visit – and especially in the wake of The Hidden Hut's new cookbook. This beachside cafe is pretty high on my list of places to visit, though last time we didn't manage to get there. So instead we're making our own versions at home. With a whole summer ahead of us we're hoping to spend much of it on the coast, whether in Ibiza or in Camber Sands, both of which destinations are covered in this issue. British beaches seem to have improved

significantly since I was a child, though I'm aware that this sounds unrealistic. It used to always be raining and the ice cream shop was never open, but these days there's lots of fresh seafood, surfing lessons, white sand and natural beauty, whether in Cornwall or Kent or Scilly. The Scilly Isles are another obsession, for their sheer remoteness and stunning landscapes, as well as for their amazing flora and fauna. And while we're looking beyond London, there's also Ascot this month, so we're looking at the annual style guides for inspiration. The magazine also has the usual mix of local events, shops and property – we hope you enjoy it.

A magical outdoor tale for all the family

Life is suddenly turned upside down and everything becomes curiouser and curiouser… This summer, join Alice on her amazing journey through Wonderland and experience an adventure like no other. Lewis Carroll’s classic story is cleverly lifted from the page and beautifully brought to life in Glenn Elston’s highly acclaimed production. Life is suddenly turned upside down for Alice, so join her as she tumbles down the rabbit hole and lands in the magical world of “Wonderland”. It’s a roller-coaster of a story as she bravely bounces from one unexpected and amazing situation to the next. There’s a wildly curious assortment of characters. Bump into the skittish, constantly late White Rabbit, sing along with the Dodo and other birds in the Caucaus race and meet the pepper obsessed Duchess and her extremely crazy cook. The Cheshire Cat will leave you with a grin and you can’t fail to miss Humpty Dumpty on his way to meet Tweedledum and Tweedledee as they tell the tale of the Walrus and the Carpenter. What might seem slightly silly then becomes downright absurd as the Mad Hatter arrives with the March Hare and the Dormouse to have a grand old time with Alice at the tea party. As a magnificent finale, join the Queen of Hearts and her parade of cards. This is where everyone, both young and a perhaps a little bit older, can be part of the fun. Presented in a bright performance style, with colourful costumes, interactive games and catchy songs this is a perfect way to go on a wonderful Wonderland adventure with the entire family.

ABSOLUTE HELL

The National’s stylish revival of Rodney Ackland's rarely perfomed play

I

By PENDLE HARTE

t's a beautiful set, all tassled lampshades and soft furnishings, a detailed and naturalistic recreation of a Soho dive in the 1940s. This is La Vie en Rose, where a crowd of drinkers spanning struggling writers, American soldiers, elderly ladies, young socialites and damaged souls of varying ages and states of mind gather nightly to 'escape reality'. Outside the club, the war may be over but memories of the 'horror camps' are raw and there's a sense of unsettlement about an upcoming election, illustrated by a

Labour Party office taking residence opposite the club as a permanent onstage presence. Last performed at the National in 1995, with Judi Dench, the play is hugely entertaining as a patchwork of small stories and scenes, without having much by way of actual unified plot. The cast is vast – about 30 people on stage at once for much of the duration – and their complex, alcohol-fuelled relationships with each other drive the show bringing lots of comedy as well as a serious look at the realities of Soho's sleazy nightlife. A lone prostitute Memorable performances come

from Charles Edwards as Hugh Marriner, a failing and increasingly desperate writer, bumblingly English and comically awkward as well as Eileen Walsh, who gets the most laughs as shouty religious loon Madge, appearing at intervals to insist loudly that Jesus's actual birth happened on Boxing Day. Patricia England is a delightfully confused woman who gets the wrong end of the stick about Siegfried Sassoon early on and keeps going with it, while Lizzie Clachan's dark, rose-tinted set is visually rich and interesting right up until the building collapses, signifying the end of an era. Eveybody likes to watch other people behaving badly, and this is what we're doing, with an ultimate sense of doom. Characters are grotesque, lecherous, debauched and simply drunk, while the stylish set and elegant period costumes make it a visually rich performance. At just over three hours with two breaks, it's certainly lengthy – but the pace is entertaining and it's never dull. Ultimately, it's a winning show.

iffords Circus celebrates the 250th anniversary of circus with a UK premiere tour of their new show, My Beautiful Circus. The show will open on Friday 4 May at Fennels Farm, Stroud and comes to Chiswick House & Gardens on 28 June. In 1768 near Westminster Bridge, equestrian rider Philip Astley drew out a 42-foot circle and filled it with jugglers, acrobats, clowns, strong men and bareback horse riders. This spectacle was the world’s very first circus. My Beautiful Circus will feature some of the classical acts such as: death-defying acrobatics, enchanting domestic animals and fan-favourite of Giffords Circus comedic genius, Tweedy the clown. Circus-goers can enjoy dining at Giffords exclusive rustic restaurant, Circus Sauce that tours with them. Circus Sauce serves a set three -course menu that changes weekly, using seasonal produce from the surrounding area.

“Death-defying acrobatics, enchanting animals and Tweedy the clown” Founder, and producer Nell Gifford has said: “We are so thrilled to be taking part of the celebration of the 250th year of circus. Show director Cal McCrystal and I have been asking ourselves: What makes the circus so magnetic? What is conjured up by the word circus? Why do we want to run away with the circus? What would the most beautiful circus look like? I hope that next year’s show will answer all those questions and more.” giffordscircus.com A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

HELEN BROWN Why did you pick up the camera in the first place? TERRY O’NEILL Playing drums in jazz bands was and is my first love. I was successful in London clubs but I wanted to play with the best and they were in New York. Getting there was of course expensive, so I hit on an idea. If I could get a job as an air steward on the BA (BOAC) transatlantic flights, I could moonlight in clubs in London AND New York. In those days you got to stay over for three days so I could play the NYC clubs during those layovers. But there were no jobs going for air stewards. I was told that I could take a job in the technical services division and wait my turn. I took the job. They gave me a camera, sent me to art school to learn how to use it and tasked me to take pictures at the airport. One day I took a candid picture of a bowler hatted gentleman snoozing in a chair surrounded by West Africans in tribal robes and headgear. I didn’t know then that it was one of the most important men in the British government and Commonwealth, Rab Butler, Secretary of State for Foreign Office. Someone tapped me on the shoulder

28

and asked if they could buy the film. It was a Fleet Street newspaper reporter who knew what I had. The next thing I know, the newspaper wants to employ me. Suddenly I’m doing seven jobs a day. HB Is there anyone you wished you’d photographed but haven’t? TN Very few. Marilyn Monroe died sadly a year or two before I made it. There seem to be so few real stars today who can hold a candle to Liz Taylor or Sinatra. They were mesmerising, they walked into a room and the room fell silent. Who is there today to compare? I’d like photograph Putin, he’s an intriguing character. I’d like to find who is behind the mask. HB How do you get the perfect shot? TN Probably my greatest images were almost accidents, being in the right place at the right time and knowing when to be ready. Brigitte Bardot on a film set with occasional gusts of wind blowing the hair across her amazing face – I waited for that one gust. Frank Sinatra on the Miami boardwalk with his entourage. I was actually

walking up to his hotel wondering how I’d get past security to the Presidential Suite to hand him a letter from Ava Gardner. Then suddenly there’s Frank walking towards me; I started taking pictures. HB Exactly what is it you want to say with your photographs and how to you go about getting that across to the viewer? TN My photographs only work if they tell a story. I’m really a journalist with a camera, a story teller who uses pictures not words. You take a picture with your eye, your anticipation, the camera merely helps you interpret what you see. Take my famous David Bowie Diamond Dogs shoot. That wasn’t posed. The dog freaked out at the strobe lights I was using and reared up to bite them. The entire studio ran, except David and me. He was high at the time and I was behind the camera which gives you a false sense of security. A great shot, part accident, part knowing to keep the camera rolling. HB What makes a good sitter? TN Trusting the photographer. It’s not my job to take a bad picture. It’s my job to take a great picture. The best sitters are the famous names who deep down know that behind the celebrity they are just ordinary folk who use the toilet just like the rest off us. Who love, like or loathe just like the rest of us. I have always treated my subjects respectfully, but I’ve always viewed them as people - nothing more - and that way you both relax, you both bond and the best flows from that. Bowie was brilliant because he actually collaborated, he wanted to tell a story too. Others like Steve McQueen were just control freaks and bullies. So when he started to rant, I just carried on taking pictures of this angry man – because that’s who he really was. HB How much do you respond to chance and occurrences? TN All the time. No matter how much of an idea I may have fixed about someone, my eye is looking for opportunity, a moment, an insight that reveals more, or tells a deeper story. HB How have you come to be involved with the Kensington & Chelsea Art Weekend? TN I’ve lived and worked around

Kensington & Chelsea most of my life. It’s where art and life combined, popular postwar culture began. Mary Quant had her basement on the King's Road and Barbara Hulanicki opened Biba in Kensington. The Beatles, The Stones, the first supermodels and I would hang out at those shops, we’d eat at the restaurants and discuss ideas. Kensington & Chelsea was at the epicentre of the Swinging Sixties and in truth, that’s where it all began. HB What can you tell us about the projects you’re going to be working on for Kensington & Chelsea Art Weekend? TN I have several places exhibiting my work including Box Gallery on the King’s Road and the Little Black Gallery on the Fulham Road. My art hangs all over London actually – it’s amazing how many places you can see it, from Lucio’s restaurant to the Savoy American Bar. There’s also a major new hotel opening next year that is using my photographs throughout 1,000 rooms. HB Tell us about your organisation and its mission? TN I work exclusively with Iconic Images. It has the biggest archive of Monroe, Bowie, Elton John, Audrey Hepburn Jimi Hendrix, The Stones, Led Zeppelin and hundreds of others in music, jazz, film, stage and politics, but also the biggest fashion archive in the world. Iconic makes sure a photographer’s legacy is insured and ensure our photographs can still be enjoyed 200 years from now.

HB What is your link to the area and heritage? TN Work and food. I’ve worked in the area at studios most of my life and of course I’ve eaten in the borough most days too. HB What is your favourite cultural hot spot or art gallery in the borough? TN The V&A Museum tops every other venue in London – it is probably the best in the world. They’ve just opened their Photographer’s Gallery which is a great leap forward because photography is now a major player in the art market, whereas it was invisible only 10 years ago. HB What is your future vision and how could you see Kensington & Chelsea improve? TN Kensington & Chelsea need more cultural art spaces and galleries or it's going to be overtaken by the East End/Hoxton/ Clerkenwell axis. It might help if the area created some form of subsidy for art-related projects, but like every other borough, they need every penny of income they can get. It would be great to decorate a major outdoor area with street art. There’s just not enough to excite the eye outside of traffic signs and shop fronts. I love the idea of “stories on the wall” – great images projected or printed to create public events outdoors. Q&A

Skin DEEP Absolutely quizzes Heidi Gosman, co-founder of Heidi Klein, about bikinis, beaches and fashion Wo r d s PENDLE HARTE

I ALL IMAGES HEIDI KLEIN SS18

n 2002 Heidi Gosman and Penny Klein launched Heidi Klein, the UK's first one-stop holiday shop. The first boutique, in Westbourne Grobe, was designed to be evocative of a Hamptons retreat in whitewashed wood with palm leaves, bleached coral and driftwood, complete with the delicate scent of coconut, to create an instant holiday feel. Two years later, the Heidi Klein own brand collection was launched in response to client demand. Selling swimwear had lead them to understand precisely what works and what doesn’t, so they were able to create a collection of exquisitely cut swimwear with an impeccable fit. And not only are the fits flawless, but shop staff are trained to help people choose precisely the right shapes and sizes for them (which aren't always the ones you'd expect to go for). The brand's focus on exclusive styles and prints has earned a continued celebrity following from Kate Moss to Olivia Palermo, to Sienna Miller and Jennifer Aniston. We caught up with Heidi Gosman to find out more.

Q What makes a great bikini? A Without a doubt, it’s all about fit. Getting

that right is 90% of the battle for women purchasing bikinis, and one of the problems that plagues the search for so many, is that there are plenty of designers doing truly gorgeous bikinis that only fit very specific, often unrealistic body shapes. We put a huge amount of research and emphasis on making sure that everything we create is beautiful on and off the body. Every single Heidi Klein swimsuit goes through a sevenstage fit cycle, on different body types.

FASHION • Q&A

Q And what makes a terrible one? A Bad support and wearing the wrong size.

Beyond that, it’s down to personal style, and everyone has their own. Q How do trends affect swimwear? What’s new for Heidi Klein’s SS18? A Trends in swimwear tend to affect shapes and silhouettes most dramatically. More than anything, we change our palettes, developing hand-blended colours and patterns we hand-paint in house. We always have new shapes, but we also do have a lot of timeless classics that we have absolutely perfected over time. Our customers love knowing they can always find their dream shapes in fresh colourways. Q What are your best-selling pieces? A Easily, our core nautical range. It’s the

DNA of the brand and a huge success – not only in the UK, but all over the world. Q How have your swimwear designs evolved over the years? A It’s really interesting actually. There have been such enormous levels of innovation and advancement in the technology around

swimwear, particularly in the last five years. Because we put such a focus on research and development, we’ve been able to really harness these changes and build them into our products and design. Fabrics dry faster; provide greater and more consistent SPF; padding holds shape better; colours stay true in even more extreme conditions; and there are wonderful developments in ethics and sustainability in the sector. I would say there’s not a single component in our swimsuits that has not been enhanced dramatically by recent innovations. Q Who is your favourite designer? A In the world? I’d have to say Carolina

Herrera. She just never gets it wrong, does she? Q Where is your favourite holiday destination? A I’ve been visiting Botswana for 20 yearssafari there is an incredibly special thing to experience. Positano and the Riviera will always have a special place in my heart, it’s where I went on my honeymoon. Q How many bikinis do you pack for a

holiday?

A I wish I could take hundreds, but practicality wins for space now that I have three children. I’m always on the run and often travel with carry-on only, so I can’t pack too many. I’d say at least an edited choice of three, easily, as I’m always curious to trial the new collections and test how they actually perform. They all have to be perfect, of course.

Once I’m back in the chair, I get a rundown of the fantastic Kerastase products that will be used in my hair; their Elixir Ultime, a hair oil to ensure a silky smooth finish, the Ciment Thermique to protect my hair throughout the blow-dry, and the Fluidissime anti-frizz spray to take care of any remaining fly-aways. PERFUME

EAU DE COLOGNE

How fresh combinations of lemon, lavender and herbs created an iconic and enduring concept B y M I C H A E L D O N OVA N

T

here is nothing quite like the refreshing scent of Eau de Cologne. It is uplifting, cleansing and helps one feel perky. Eau de Cologne dates back to 1709, when the first fragrance bearing this title was created – not by a German perfumer, but by an Italian. Giovanni Maria Farina was born in Italy in 1685 and settled in Cologne, founding what is now the oldest working perfume factory. He created his fragrance masterpiece in 1709 and named it 'Eau de Cologne' in gratitude at having been granted citizenship by his adopted home. His inspiration for the fragrance appears in a letter to his brother. "My fragrance is reminiscent of a spring morning in Italy after the rain; of oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bergamot, cedrat and the blooms and herbs of my home.” Farina's Eau de Cologne become an international sensation almost overnight. In a world without proper sanitation this light, refreshing scent was spritzed onto a handkerchief and held under the nose to ward off unpleasant odours. The aristocracy embraced it as the very last word in refinement and Farina's fortunes were assured. This fragrance is still made in the same place, by the same family who have not tampered with the original formula. Almost 100 years later, in 1794, what is perhaps the most famous Eau de Cologne of all was created

“It is refreshing, uplifting and cleansing”

- '4711'. Named after the address of its maker Wilhelm Mülhens, this 'miracle water' was actually intended as a remedy tonic to be ingested undiluted or mixed with wine. When Napoleon Bonaparte decreed in 1810 that all recipes used for medication must publicly list their ingredients, Muhlens, unwilling to divulge the secret of his formula, marketed 4711 as fragrance instead. It became extremely fashionable in the early 20th century, rivalling Chanel No 5 in popularity. The combination of bergamot, lemon, and orange is revitalising, while calming heart notes of lavender and rosemary offer a herbal bite. Neroli is used at the base, its bitter effervescence driving the scent forward. The term Eau de Cologne has lost its meaning over the centuries. Is it the strength of the fragrance (traditionally under 5% concentration) or a combination of certain ingredients? Now it has become that a blanket term to describe a summery scent, usually containing citrus, lavender and herbal notes. Agua de Colonnia Concentrada from Alvarez Gomez in Madrid dates to 1912, another recipe that has been protected by generations of the same family. This is a lemon fragrance like no other, while Hierbas de Ibiza, inspired by the scents of the beautiful island, uses natural essences of orange and lemon peel, thyme, lavender, sage, verbena, jasmine and orange blossom. And finally, a new and exciting collection of colognes, the La Veritable Collection from Parfums Cadentia, comprises five modern masterpieces that combine traditional concepts with a thoroughly modern approach. Apply liberally on a warm evening's commute. Stay fragrant. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

HPE C LOT H I N G The fitness brand to know now… WHAT IS IT?

erformance and style unite to create a winning combination in sport-fashion brand HPE Clothing. Founder Nick Harris has worked closely with some of the world’s leading athletes, including Formula 1™ world champions, Grand Slam-winning tennis players and Major-winning golfers. Combining advanced fabric technology, thoughtful tailoring and stylish design, HPE (Human Performance Engineering) Clothing is designed to withstand the rigours of intensive training, while maintaining optimal comfort and enhancing performance.

P

CORE STRENGTH

DW Fitness First personal trainer Hannah Bright (@HannahBrightWellness) shares the secrets to getting a strong core this summer

WHAT’S NEW?

he new subscription box service from HPE Clothing allows you to create an enviable collection of luxurious active wear that is delivered directly to your door. Available for both men and women, customers can choose from a wide array of the brand’s most popular designs and colourways, while benefitting from significant savings on signature styles and bestselling products.

t

A one off women’s box retails at £160, and £110 for men, including free postage & packaging and returns Annual subscriptions start at £110 per box for women and £85 per box for men. For more information, visit hpeclothing.com

WHY IS CORE STRENGTH IMPORTANT?

CAN YOU EXPLAIN TWO OF THESE?

Our core is the foundation for every movement and a strong core helps with balance and stability. We use our core without even realising when we perform every day activities, from lifting shopping into the car to pushing a trolley around the supermarket - and of course our core is fundamental to all lifts within the gym. Focussing on your core muscles and building them to be stronger will allow you to lift heavier and progress further with your fitness goals.

V-tucks: Start sitting and lean back slightly with your knees bent in front. Lift feet off the ground and extend legs forwards while lowering your upper body backwards, keep the core engaged. Return back to the starting position, keeping feet off the ground and repeat. Plank: In a pushup position, put your forearms on the ground with your elbows lined up with your shoulders. Create a straight, strong line from head to toes and hold.

WHAT ARE THE BEST SIMPLE EXERCISES FOR A STRONG CORE?

WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO TO FEEL CONFIDENT THIS SUMMER?

Body weight exercises are great and easy to do at home. My favourites include V-tucks, Russian twists, lying leg raises, supermans and the plank. In the gym, I would suggest cable crunches, the pallof press and hanging leg raises.

Get some guidance on the right diet for your body. You can spend hours exercising but if you’re not eating correctly you won’t see the results. Stay hydrated. Posture can make a massive difference; stand tall and walk confidently.

DW F I T N E S S F I R S T The best DW Fitness First classes for building core strength include SPARR, Body Combat, Legs Bums and Tums and 202020 Class. More information at dwfitnessfirst.com

TASTING NOTES

London’s food news and most exciting openings this June By GEORGIA MCVEIGH

Wine recommendations for the month By BERRY BROS. & RUDD

2016 Craven Firs, Syrah, Stellenbosch, South Africa £21.50 This wine is grown in vineyards warmerthan-usual for Stellenbosch with dark, iron-rich soils. Savoury notes of iodine and graphite temper the ripe blackberry fruit, creating a refined palate. The finish is long, fresh and defined.

Taste of London is returning this June to showcase the capital's best, most innovative restaurants, chefs, and food brands. Set to attract to 55,000 people, cuisines from all corners of the world will be meeting for a flavour explosion in the heart of Regent's Park. Here's a pick of our favourite foodie experiences to look forward to:

FREAK SCENE

TASTE JAPAN AKIRA

Japan House London is the much anticipated taste of the Orient that will bring Japanese art, design, technology and most importantly, food to Kensington High Street. Chef Akira Shimizu will be bringing his authentic 'trinity of cooking' approach (food, tableware and presentation) to the capital, and promises a diverse range of cuisine, from Wagyu beef over a flame grill to traditional drinks. 101-111 Kensington High Street, W8; japanhouselondon.uk

This Pan-Asian restaurant started as a pop-up in Clerkenwell, went from strength to strength and is now fully established in Soho. Previously Head Chef at Nobu, creator Scott Hallsworth will be serving up Chili crab and avocado wonton 'Bombs', and Salmon sashimi salad.

BEST OF BRITISH THE OLD SHIP, HAMMERSMITH

Ceviche at Sea Serves 4

I

f you’re heading out fishing, take a Tupperware tub of tiger’s milk with you, which you will be making using the chilli and limes, and enjoy a memorable ceviche lunch on the boat with the lovely fresh fish that you catch. You can use any very fresh, firmtextured white fish, or even scallops, for ceviche. Black bream is a particular favourite of mine. For maximum flavour, try to get a fruity red chilli, such as Habanero.

INGREDIENTS • 4 very fresh firm white fish fillets (about 100g each), skinned • 1 small red onion, finely sliced into rings • 10g coriander, leaves roughly chopped and stalks finely chopped, plus a few extra leaves for sprinkling • juice of 8 limes • 1 hot red chilli, such as Habanero, deseeded and finely diced • ½ tsp granulated sugar; sea salt

METHOD 1 Cut a V into the centre of the fish to remove the bloodline and all the pin bones. 2 Take off any little bits of fat, so that you are left with clean white fillets. You don’t want any of the red flesh, just the delicate white meat. If you are buying from a fishmonger, they should be able to do this for you.

3 Slice the fillets thinly, going with the grain of the fish – so you will be cutting down at a slight angle. Try to keep each slice the same thickness, so that they marinate evenly. 4 Put the red onion in a shallow dish and add the coriander and 1 teaspoon sea salt 5 Add most of the lime juice with the chilli and a little of the sugar. Adjust the flavour by adding more lime, sugar and salt to get a balance of flavours: sharpness, a bit of saltiness and a little sweetness. Making this mixture – known as tiger’s milk – can be a balancing act, depending on the size of the fish, strength of the chillies or tartness of the limes, and so on. 6 Spread the fish over a plate and pour the tiger’s milk over the fish. Leave to marinate for 5–10 minutes until it starts to whiten. Sprinkle with coriander leaves and serve.

FOOD & DRINK • RECIPES 3 Sprinkle the pork with a good handful of salt and a good coating of black pepper. Sprinkle the lemon zest over the pork, then douse with a good drizzle of olive oil. 4 Put a double layer of baking parchment over the pork, then cover the whole tin with foil. 5

Roast in the oven for 4 hours.

6 To make the fennel slaw, top and tail the fennel, removing the outer layer and saving the green fronds to garnish. Finely chop the fennel into slices and put them in a serving bowl. 7 In a blender, blitz together all the remaining ingredients to make the dressing. 8 Add to the bowl with the fennel, toss well, then garnish with the chopped fronds. 9 To make the sticky ginger rhubarb, scatter the rhubarb over a baking tray and cover with the sugar, cinnamon and ginger. Give it a good stir to coat and cook, uncovered, in the oven on the shelf above the pork for 40 minutes. Allow to cool, then transfer to a serving bowl. 10 To make the caraway flatbreads, put the flour in a large bowl and stir in the baking powder and salt.

low-roasted pork shoulder with ginger rhubarb compote, fennel slaw and toasted caraway flatbreads. This aromatic feast is great for informal gatherings. You can do most of the prep earlier in the day, with the pork cooking in the oven, smelling amazing, as people arrive

INGREDIENTS • 4 garlic bulbs • 2.5kg boned and rolled pork shoulder • zest of 1 lemon • olive oil, for drizzling • sea salt • freshly ground black pepper

Fo r t h e f e n n e l s l a w • 8 fennel bulbs

• Juice of 4 lemons • 300ml olive oil • 2 tsp caster sugar • 2 tsp wholegrain mustard • 1 tsp sea salt • A handful of mint, leaves chopped • 3 onions, chopped

11 Add the caraway and cumin, and stir to combine. 12 Gradually add enough water to make a dough that is soft and a bit sticky.

For t h e s t ic k y g i n g e r r h u b a r b

13 Add the sunflower oil and knead for 10 minutes or until the dough is smooth.

• 700g rhubarb, cut into 2cm chunks • 70g soft brown sugar • a pinch of ground cinnamon • 2cm piece of fresh root ginger, peeled and grated

14 Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, then cover with a clean tea towel or cling film and leave in a warm place to rest for 30 minutes.

Fo r t h e c a r a w a y f l a t b r e a d s • 1kg plain flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 4 tsp fine sea salt • 2 tbsp caraway seeds • 2 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp sea salt • 4 tbsp sunflower oil, plus extra for greasing

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 160°C (140°C fan oven) gas mark 3 2 Put the garlic bulbs in a large roasting tin and balance the pork shoulder on top.

15 Divide the dough into eight pieces, then form into balls and flatten each ball to about 3mm thick. 16 Heat a griddle pan or frying pan until hot, then cook each dough round for 1 minute on each side or until lightly charred. Remove from the pan and wrap in a clean tea towel to keep warm. 17 Once the pork is ready, shred it onto a large plate using two forks. Put the pork on the table with the fennel slaw, sticky ginger rhubarb and the flatbreads and let people assemble their own pork flatbreads as they wish.

Tucked away along the coastal path near Portscatho and St Mawes, it’s a special spot mackerel fillets, then cut away a lengthways strip down the middle of the fillets to remove the pin bones and a small amount of the flesh. Put to one side. 7 Using a sharp knife, cut a thin slice of peel and pith from one end of each orange. Put, cut side down, in a shallow bowl and cut off the peel and pith in strips. Remove any remaining pith. Cut out each orange segment, leaving the membrane behind. Squeeze the remaining juice from the membrane into the bowl. 8 Whisk the olive oil and mustard into the orange juice. Season, going easy on the salt, as the mackerel will be salty. 9 When the beetroot is cooked, scrape off the skin using a knife, then slice thinly. 10 Drain the potatoes and tip them back into the warm pan. Drizzle with a little of the orange dressing.

Smoked Mackerel, Orange and Beetroot Salad Serves 4

C

olourful and nutrient-rich, this salad is perfect on a warm, autumnal day when mackerel, beetroot and oranges are at their seasonal best.

INGREDIENTS • 2 large raw beetroots, unpeeled, washed and leaves trimmed to 3cm • a squeeze of lemon juice • 300g waxy potatoes, • unpeeled, cut lengthways into 5mm slices • 4 smoked mackerel fillets • 2 oranges • 4 tbsp light olive oil

• 2 tsp wholegrain mustard • 80g watercress • 8 basil leaves • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD 1 Put the beetroot in a large saucepan with the lemon juice and a good pinch of salt 2 Bring the water to the boil over a high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for 35–40 minutes, or until tender throughout and a knife can be inserted easily.

11 Put the watercress in a bowl and remove any thick stems. Tear in the basil leaves. Add a tablespoon of the dressing and toss the leaves to coat them lightly in the dressing. 12 Lay the warm potato and beetroot slices on a platter. Scatter over the dressed leaves and orange segments. Flake the mackerel into large chunks over the top and finish by drizzling with a little more dressing. 13 Serve any remaining dressing on the side.

3 Meanwhile, after the beetroot has been cooking for 20 minutes, start cooking the potatoes. 4 Put them in a saucepan of cold, salted water over a high heat. 5 Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10–12 minutes.

“The small and cosy interior gives off the feeling of a family run restaurant in Sicily”

L’ASSAGGINO Simple, fresh and traditional Italian food

L

FOOD Simple, fresh Italian dishes

B y A N A B E L A KO L E C I

’assaggino brings the flavours and authenticity of Italy directly to the heart of Richmond. Its location on a rustic side road, and the small and cosy interior of the restaurant itself gives off the feeling of a family run restaurant in Sicily. The warm and welcoming staff only add to the Italian illusion, and as we sit down, they make sure we are fully informed about the large selection of fresh pasta they make in house as well as the fresh and carefully sourced ingredients used in each dish, and we fully relax into the setting that has small tables placed

close to each other for intimacy. The menu is typically Italian, offering traditional pasta dishes and risottos that are beautifully crafted and contain of all the love and flavour you’d expect to find in Italy. The evening begins with a selection of flavoursome starters. There is fresh bread for dipping in a tangy and thick tomato sauce and an oozing burrata, bursting with a rich and creamy centre. This is accompanied by a sharp traditional Sicilian caponata, consisting mainly of aubergine, which plays off the creaminess of the cheese to provide the seasoning and saltiness that the burrata lacks. Our final starter

DECOR Cosy and intimate, with an Italian feel

PRICE Starters from £5 and mains from £8

VERDICT Perfect for a simple, delicious, reasonably priced meal

is a zesty octopus salad, which complements and rounds off the first courses nicely. For our main course, the staff recommend two of the most popular dishes on the menu - the pappardelle al ragu di Agnello, a stew where lamb is carefully marinated in a well-rounded herb mix for six to eight hours and served over fresh pasta. The lamb itself is melt-inthe-mouth and tender. The other recommendation is tagliolini con pesto di mare, and it’s clear why it’s such a popular dish. Filled to the brim with only the freshest of seafood, it boasts baby prawns, mussels, squid and clams atop a bed of fresh tagliolini: in short, any seafood lovers dream. Both dishes are accompanied with a glass of tasteful wine, that complement the intricate flavours of the dishes. L’assaggino is perfect if you’re looking for the “fresh food, simple ingredients and good wine” of Italy - at a very reasonable price. It’s a truly romantic setting, where you are well looked after and all of the food is simple and delicious. ● L’ASSAGINO 9 Paved Court, Richmond TW9 1LZ lassaggino.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. visit to Puglia in southern Italy was the starting point for our second collection with Habitat. The region is famed for its brightly glazed ceramics with vivid paint splatters and figurative motifs applied to hand-turned pottery, sculpted at the wheel. Habitat has worked with a small workshop in the town of Grottagli for a number of years owned by the Fasano family, who agreed to work with us on a collaborative collection of serveware for the dining table. Platters, serving bowls, crockery, jugs, utensil jars and pinch pots – the range is curated with a variety of shapes and sizes to add visual interest to your table and kitchen. Visually, the collection couldn’t be more different to our last – a reflection that not one of our supper clubs is ever the same as each

reating a space that is as impressive as the food is a priority for Jackson & Levine, now known for their innovative floral installations and unique hand picked tableware. other. Whereas our first textiles collection was based around botanical, muted design, this collection is unabashed about mixing colours – pinks with red, yellows with lilacs – with freehand artwork by Habitat’s in-house designer Martha Coates alongside beautiful splatter patterns. But like the last, this collection is again about celebrating traditional craftsmanship. Each piece is individually hand-made and glazed in traditional ways meaning you have your own unique piece. These are both stand alone statement pieces but also work together for an explosion of Italianate colour and design on the table. To accompany we’ve curated a Puglian inspired seasonal menu to enjoy with this collection. With the Francesca plate we’ve reimagined what the Fasano family is famed for: striking freehand figurative illustrations on ceramics. The result: an elegant Italian lady for the dinner plates and for the side plate a more classical, Romanesque design. The palette of green & pink and yellow and red adds a real point of difference and brings this tradition bang up to date. We played around with lots of faces and figures and we love the two characters that are the central motif of the collection. A ceramic utensil pot, for us, immediately conjures up the image of a traditional Italian kitchen, so we felt we had to have one in the collection. Again, to move away from the expected, we’ve used a bold, dipped colour in contrasting shades. The small oval platters too are beautiful for serving sides and complement both the salad and pinch pot designs. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

he living room is the perfect place to go wild and use multiple plant types when styling. Use plants both individually and in groupings to get different effects. Tall, tree-like plants like the rubber plant and dinner-plate ficus, are great specimen plants if you want to add drama into your room. You can also mix plain-leafed plants with more textured types.

ST Y L I N G T I P If you don’t want an indoor jungle but still want to incorporate greenery into your living room, try styling with a handful of plants. Smaller plants sit perfectly on your coffee table without blocking your view when seated on the sofa. Larger plants like Ficus Alii help to soften the harsh areas next to your sofa. When it comes to choosing pots, use similar textures and tones to those in your furniture to continue the style of your interior.

ST Y L I N G T I P Play with a range of leaf textures to bring life into the dead corners of your living room. A mix of fine and broad leaves coupled with a seating arrangement can create a charming corner to read in. ST Y L I N G T I P If you love a dark palette, use plants with strong forms. Darker coloured and more architectural leaves add depth to moody spaces. On the other hand, a lighter space will make your plants stand out more. Whether you are after a dark or light palette, let your plants spill out into your room. Use cascading plants on windowsills and mantlepieces, tall upright growing plants on the floor and smaller plants on coffee tables. When you build a bigger collection of plants, start experimenting by layering with colour, texture, shape and size. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

arble Hill Fireplaces was established as a family business in 1974. They have grown exponentially over the years but still offer the same personalised service from initial enquiry to installation and also offer a professional design service.

Marble Hill employ their own fitters and therefore have full control over the installations from start to finish and work closely with architects, designers , site foreman and private clients to ensure the fitting runs smoothly and on schedule. Their showrooms in south west London are well worth a visit as they have seven different show areas over four floors showing a wide range of their fireplaces, many of which are under fire. Their stone mantels are made in England from the best quality material, as are their marble mantels, and as such they are able to offer bespoke sizes and variations on many of their standard designs.

Planika also offer bespoke fires to your own design. Their enhanced designs create an exceptional atmosphere influencing our everyday life. If you are looking for exceptional service and quality products at competitive prices then make Marble Hill Fireplaces your first and last port of call. They have their own restoration department and undertake large restoration projects throughout London working closely with people such as English Heritage, Grosvenor Estates and large multinational developers and builders ensuring the work undertaken is of the highest standard and appropriate to the age and status of the building. Marble Hill have seen trends come and go over the years but have remained focused on offering the very best quality at competitive prices and the latest designs to stay at the forefront of the fireplace industry and its ever changing technology They are the main London agents for Bellfires balanced flue fire which do not need a conventional chimney and can, more often than not, be positioned wherever required to create a stunning focal point. ome people might not want to holiday next to land that’s fenced off for use by the MOD. Or they might be put off by a location that’s just a few miles away from a nuclear power station. But when interior architect Marta Nowicka found a coastguard’s cottage for sale in Romney Marsh, a stone’s throw from the long stretch of beach at Camber Sands, she wasn’t put off by either of those things. She saw potential in the house, unloved as it was when she found it – and transformed it into a stylish coastal retreat whose interiors are characterful and cosy, fitting their seaside surroundings without becoming twee or clichéd.

Marta is an interior architect who’s built up a significant property portfolio over the past 20 years, each of them unique. She lives between a converted print factory in Shoreditch and a reinvented St John Ambulance station in Rye (both her own projects) and she is currently in the process of creating a family house out of a garage in Dalston. Her coastguard’s cottage definitely inhabits a strange spot. A few miles away there’s Rye, one of the region’s most conventionally pretty places, possibly a bit too pretty for some tastes. Camber is characterised by unlovely caravan parks and pylons, but at the empty stretch of flat land around Jurys Gap, the landscape is interrupted by two incongruous terraces of 19th century coastguards cottages set A B S O L U T E LY. at right angles to each other. These are now mostly holiday lets, though there is a sense that you’ve stumbled upon a secret community. It’s strange to think that there would once have been so many coastguards patrolling this stretch, but the wild and exposed headland was a smugglers’ paradise for several hundred years. It still feels otherworldly and with a large windfarm visible in the distance, we feel far away from everywhere. The house’s layout is unusual. Staircases are hidden behind doors and doors that you think might lead to rooms turn out in fact to be cupboards. There are windows on three sides, offering dramatic views of the skies, the expanse of surrounding land and of course the sea. Despite being very much a cottage, with Marta’s input it has become a five-bedroom house, with two basement rooms and a clever loft bedroom reached by a space-saving ladder-like staircase. “I like working with existing buildings and tickling something out of them,” she says. “I appreciate calm, neat, rational design.” In its white palette suiting the weatherbeaten coast, the interior has a textured feel, with many walls stripped back to the original plaster and its distressed patina and others painted white tongue and groove. There’s peeling paint on the stone staircase to the

cellar and the dining table is a single piece of ancient wood, all ridges and knots and exposed brick surrounds the fireplaces. The house’s stripped back character respects its history. It’s a great place to spend a weekend. The vastness of the beach isn’t visible until you’re on it, but a few steps away from the kitchen door is a dramatically huge stretch of near-deserted sand that disappears entirely at high tide. Further down the coast is the main stretch of Camber Sands with its dunes and crowds, while a short drive brings you to Dungeness, one of the strangest places in the UK. In the shadow of the power station is a huge stretch of shingle dotted with abandoned sheds and broken boats, and home to an assortment of wooden huts, mostly painted black, among them Derek Jarman’s famous Prospect Cottage. Full of strange fauna and bleakness, it’s a spot with a cult following of its own. You can almost smell the plutonium. Back at the coastguard’s cottage, there’s comfort and dinner in the garden and it feels a world away again. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

arcelona-based Little Creative Factory is that rare thing: a clothing brand that appears to be genuinely animated by the forms, fantasies and phenomena of the outside world – and able to translate that energy into clothes that are at once simple and utterly distinctive. Too often, brands come up with a collection to which they retrospectively peg inspirations. But Little Creative Factory’s ideas and enthusiasms are stitched into every seam of its products. The latest collection, Dancers, offers a playful reimagining of ballet skirts, jazz bodysuits and tap dresses; the soft baby hoodies wouldn’t look out of place in the New York dance milieu of Frances Ha while little bodysuits and apron skirts look like they’ve been snipped out of a Degas. In fact, the painter is an important reference point throughout: there’s a dress named for him, and the entire collection is suff used with the pale, dreamy hues found in his work. littlecreativefactory.com

EDUCATION • FOCUS To take the example of brain development, we know that singing requires interaction between parts of the brain dedicated to aspects of music (such as pitch and rhythm), language (lyrics), fine motor behaviour, visual imagery and emotion. Research also suggests that singing with someone else is not the same as singing alone because it involves neurological areas related to social interaction and coordination. The ability to perform with poise is also critical for academic and future success. The opportunity to practise with self-discipline, perform, make mistakes and overcome nerves is equally as important as writing an essay or mastering a sum. For this reason, we provide a wealth of

ARTS

Why creative and performing arts subjects in UK schools are so important By CA R O L C H A N D L E R -T H O M P S O N

T

he Warwick Commission of 2015 reported that between 2003 and 2013 there was a 50% drop in GCSE numbers for design and technology, 23% for drama and 25% for other craft-related subjects. The number of arts teachers in schools has fallen by 11% since 2010. In a society where schools are judged largely by their place in the league tables, and the government decide what is counted in those league tables, the arts have suffered. I feel incredibly fortunate to lead a school unconstrained by the whims of government policy on EBacc and funding cuts. At Blackheath High School, we take immense pleasure in cultivating and celebrating the arts. During our annual STEAM week, the

arts sit proudly alongside science, technology, engineering and maths as we challenge our girls with STEAM themed activities. This includes science-based Harry Potter potions classes to motorcycle maintenance or constructing large scale linear thread structures inspired by the artist Adrian Esparza. As a school for 3-18 year olds, we are able to embed a love of creative and performing arts from the start. Last year, our Junior School choir won the GDST Young Choir of the Year competition at the prestigious Cadogan Hall. Performing in magnificent surroundings and working as a team to be crowned winners of this high standard competition was an unforgettable experience for our girls, not to mention the benefit accrued from hours of singing practice.

“Girls use creativity to defy gender stereotypes”

Return of the

performance opportunities for our girls from concerts to a musical production in a professional theatre. Having the courage and intellectual flexibility required to succeed is invaluable for personal development and can be achieved through the arts. In our design technology classes, girls use creativity to find solutions to problems and defy gender stereotypes by engaging in activities like construction and welding. In art, our girls learn dedication, imagination, attention to detail and courage. In a recent collaboration with Farrow & Ball, our art scholars developed stunning pieces in response to the theme ‘SE3: Surfaces and Structures’ using Farrow & Ball paints and materials. They were pushed out of their comfort zone, worked to a deadline and prepared for a professional exhibition. In The Guardian, playwright James Graham recently observed “how dangerous it would be for education if you turn it into a factgathering exercise, with no space for children to make emotional or creative sense of their lives”. As parents and teachers, we should resist this evisceration of our children’s education with all the energy we can muster. A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

rtists have always been drawn to the Scilly Isles, the archipelago that lies 28 miles from the Cornish coast. The light, the improbably beautiful beaches with their Caribbean-white sand and Disney-like aquamarine water, the exotic fauna, the microclimate and the generally otherworldly feel to the region all make it special. Because you’ve really got to want to come here. It might be in England but time-wise it’s definitely Long Haul – the journey time from London is similar to the Caribbean’s. It’s an endless drive from London to Land’s End, especially accompanied by rain that ranges from pouring to torrential with grey skies, terrible visibility and pockets of flooding. But there’s a glimmer

Everything seems miniature and oldfashioned apart from the fauna, which is bizarre of blue sky in the distance as soon as we arrive at Land’s End airport, and from here the travelling gets more interesting. A 16-seater Skybus – too small even for hand luggage – takes about 15 minutes to reach St Mary’s, the only island with an airport (from the passenger windows it seems that the landing strip is obscured by rocks, which makes for an exciting descent) and from here it’s a car to the port, followed by a boat to Tresco, the privately-owned island where we are headed. With a population of just 170, Tresco is a privately owned island run mainly as a timeshare business. Leased from the Duchy of Cornwall it the early 19th century, it is still run by the same family. There are no cars; everything seems miniature and old-fashioned apart from the fauna which is bizarre and exotic, all sprawling succulents and tropical palms. Think Postman Pat on the Galapagos. On Tresco, there’s a single pub, a church, a primary school, a shop, a spa, two restaurants and an art gallery, plus a ruined castle and the Abbey and that’s really it. At less than two miles long and with no street lighting, this is a calm and quiet place where you’re never far from an improbably beautiful beach and an impressive view. Our cottage, one of the Flying Boat terraces, is named Fearless and from its sitting room it has an impressive view of the A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

beach and the sea; at low tide a sandbank appears and creates a walkable route to Bryher, the next island, which is even smaller and has a population of only about 80 people (though it does have a fantastic hotel, Hell Bay). The main highlight of Tresco is the Abbey Garden, often described as a perennial Kew without the glasshouse. Dating back to the 19th century, this subtropical garden is home to more than 20,000 species of plants from at least 80 countries and even in the depths of winter there are exotic plants in flower. Many of them that wouldn’t survive on the mainland just 30 miles away are able to thrive here thanks to the sheltered location and peculiar microclimate. These gardens were established by the 19th century proprietor of the islands, Augustus Smith, originally as a private garden within the grounds of the home that he designed and built on a site hosting the remains of a Benedictine Abbey. There were hardly any trees on the island and the gorse did not provide enough protection so

Augustus planted ‘shelterbelts’. The first were mainly deciduous trees such as, elm, sycamore, oak, and poplar, and later he planted Monterey cypress and Monterey pine which are fast growing and suited to coastal conditions. By building tall windbreaks, Smith channelled the weather up and over the network of walled enclosures. He also carved three terraces from the rocky, south facing slope looking towards St Mary’s. The hotter, drier terraces at the top of the garden suit South African and Australian plants; those lower down provide the humidity that favours flora from New Zealand and South America. Not only is the island home to a diversity of fauna but its wildlife is also remarkable. This is one of the few places where the red squirrel still thrives, not having been bullied into extinction by its fiercer grey cousin. There are no badgers, foxes or hedgehogs on Tresco and therefore the gentle red squirrel has no predators. Sure, an island of this diminutive size lacks facilities. There is one shop and a bike

Among the Scilly Isles’ many loyal fans is artist Hugo Dalton. His latest range of wallpapers for The Paint and Paper Library (pictured above) is named after Tresco and features beautiful visualisations of the island’s landscapes and landmarks. He said: “The Isles of Scilly archipelago and Tresco in particular has been a place of joy and inspiration throughout my career. The clarity and calm of the Island has guided the creation of each individual wallpaper.” paintandpaperlibrary.com hire place, a post office (a very efficient one – our postcard arrived in London the next day) plus a pub, a brasserie, a restaurant and a spa – as well as, of course, an art gallery. The New Inn pub’s walls feature a potted history of the island with portraits of past residents and families as well as significant boats. In all, this is an otherworldly spot with a strong sense of history and a wildly beautiful landscape. No wonder people keep returning after their first visit. The insanely pretty village of Veryan on the Roseland peninsula, near beautiful St Mawes, is green and lush with exotic-looking fauna. Resident artist Jeanni is on hand with art classes for all levels – we spent a happy morning learning to paint seascapes in acrylic and came away with new-found skills. ith increasingly busy lives, it can be hard just to hop on to the next flight to the Caribbean. For those craving Vitamin D in ever-unpredictable England, Europe can seem like a far more attractive option. And where better to indulge that long weekendin-the-sun craving than Spain – home of Rioja (the wine and the region, but mostly the wine), tapas and siestas? For the busiest among us, this is an opportunity to fit everything in; both ‘party’ and ‘culture’, and we have a proposal, so hear us out… Fly to Barcelona to sate your cultural desires. A mere two hours on the plane, it’s the home of Gaudi, the famous La Rambla, and the medieval Old Town – in short it can provide everything you could wish for

100

SA PUNTA, IBIZA

culturally speaking. After an abundance of sightseeing, it’s important to get your fill of comfort and luxury, too, and that’s where OD Hotel Barcelona steps in. Located close enough to the action to avoid feelings of isolation, yet away from the bustling ‘touristy’ areas, it’s a safe and peaceful haven where you can fully relax after a long day. The reception area is both cool and clean, and helpful staff are on hand at all hours to make your life as comfortable as possible, whether it be lunch on the sunny decked terrace outside or in the open plan restaurant that serves local Catalonian delicacies such as Iberian ham and succulent anchovies. A bar in the reception area on the level below the restaurant also serves expertly mixed cocktails for fuel if you’re keeping up with Spanish traditions and eating at bedtime – but an earlier dining time is also an option.

CULTURE • XXXXX We recommend fitting the culture into the morning in order to make the most of the spectacular roof terrace and bar, which provides views over the rooftops of Barcelona. There’s even an option to swim, with a tiny pool jutting out in the corner. The rooms are spacious and minimalist, although they include the thoughtful touches of an instinctively luxurious hotel: bars of chocolate on the bed, a thoroughly stocked mini bar and free bottles of water. The approach to bathrooms seems initially off-putting – merging with the room with no walls, but somehow it doesn’t seem to be an invasion of privacy and both the shower and the loo have doors. If you value privacy, then the Grand Suite drips luxury, offering your own Nespresso machine, a private pool, terrace and a seating area with views over the centre of the city. A regular suite boasts all of the same, except the terrace and pool. Whatever you choose, whether it’s a suite or a regular room, you are guaranteed a great nights sleep in their enormous beds, exemplary service from the OD Team and excellent food. Here’s where it sounds complicated in theory, but the reality couldn’t be easier. Take a transfer to Ibiza, just under an hour away by plane, for the party and relaxation part of your holiday. An island made up entirely of contrasts, there’s the party aspect to the island but there’s also orange groves, mountains and an Old Town for maximum relaxation. For a bit of stability and continuity, plus, dare I say it, a tad more glamour than its Barcelona counterpart, the OD Talamanca, located just off its famous namesake beach, is yet another safe haven away from the fullblown party atmosphere. It is obviously built for comfort. Opening for its first full season this April, its creators have clearly taken the problems of the island and addressed them one by one. They have to hand a fleet of smart cars for quick access to the heart of the island – there’s a shortage of taxis in Ibiza. They’ve included a giant eighty garage parking spaces for those that choose to rent their own – there’s also

VIEW OF IBIZA OLD TOWN

Where better to indulge that longweekend-in-thesun craving than Spain - home of Rioja and siestas? a shortage of parking spaces. The interiors are chic and again, minimal. Like Barcelona, there’s a bar in the reception area and a fully equipped restaurant, but there’s also three pools: a party orientated one, one good for kids, and one for the more serious executives. The rooms are very similar to those in Barcelona, minimal with huge beds and a balcony that looks over the pool and the sea: a feature that every room has due to the design of the hotel. Every room boasts views over the Old Town and the alluring superyachts. A fruit platter and bottle of cava is laid out to greet the guests, and lest you forget you’re in Ibiza, bottles of tequila and vodka are in pride of place next to the door. For eating out, the hotel is within walking distance of one of the most romantic restaurants in Ibiza, Sa Punta, offering

black cod, sushi and whole roast chickens amongst so much more. Even the walk to the restaurant alongside the sea is glorious. This is not to discount the food at the hotel itself. The breakfast spread is quite something to behold, with as many types of bread you could think of and a cereal bar for the more health conscious. There’s also the option of a hot breakfast, which spans from eggs benedict to chorizo. Breakfast is served until 12, so it’s possible to party until dawn and still have something to eat in the morning. For days where you may be feeling somewhat worse for wear, sitting by the pool may seem an attractive option but opening soon is the OD Talamanca Skybar, providing spectacular views over the bay, the Old Town and the party district – so beautiful it may well encourage you to keep going. Again, the hotel has the option of expansive suites, the largest of which has two stories, a kitchenette, living room and dining room. All in all, for a long weekend, it’s the perfect balance between party and culture, though how long you give to each is up to you. Or, if you fancy extending your stay, OD Hotels are located all over Spain, and you probably won’t find a more luxurious way to end your day in such a beautiful country. Perfect MATCH We caught up with Tally Dating founder Miranda Page to get the low down on the latest matchmaking app hitting our screens

Q: When did Tally Dating launch? A: Tally launched to the App Store in October last year, and we plan to launch on Android later this year, so watch this space.

Q: Are there any negatives of Tally? A: Of course, I would be naive to think otherwise. Given we have recently launched, it is fair to say there are limited users in some areas of the UK. However, this will grow with time due to word of mouth, social media and raising awareness.

Q: What makes Tally different? A: Tally has no fake or cat-fishing profiles, this is the Tally Promise. Tally also prides itself in not uploading 101 fake users to create an ‘instant’ user base and has, from day one, been growing the user base organically. Q: Is it good value for money? A: Unlike similar dating apps, such as Match, Elite Singles and eHarmony, there is no monthly subscription. The one-off membership fee is what really sets Tally Dating apart from the others. Tally doesn’t see why users should be tied into a contract. Whether you use the app for one month or one year, it shouldn’t make a difference or cost you the earth. To celebrate the launch we are currently offering an introductory price too. Q: Who is Tally designed for? A: Tally is aimed at those who are decent, honest and genuinely looking to date. Tally currently has users of all age groups, sexual orientations and from all professions. Q: Where does Tally sit amongst other dating apps on the market? A: Tally Dating bridges the gap between the likes of Tinder or Bumble and Match or eHarmony. Tally is the best of both ends of the dating app spectrum, with the emphasis on serious dating mixed with the ‘swipe’ and ‘mutual like’ elements to initiate and allow message communication.

Tally is about connecting people long-term Q: Who wouldn’t benefit from Tally? A: The jokers, the time-wasters and the fraudsters. Tally does not see dating as a game, and if ‘maximum return for minimal effort’ is your thing, then Tally is definitely not for you. Equally Tally does not believe in lengthy bizarre compatibility tests or being bombarded with messages from all types of users. Q: What are the positives of Tally? A: Real people, real pictures and real results. All users are manually verified and for every one profile we approve, we also reject one, meaning the quality of our users and the core values that Tally stands for are consistently maintained.

Q: What have been Tally’s high points over the last six months? A: We had a campaign on the London Underground in February and March, and Tally has also been featured in the Metro Newspaper across the UK. From a personal perspective, I love receiving feedback from users and reading all the great reviews via the app store. It means all the long days and nights have been worthwhile. Q: What do you want most out of Tally over the next six months? A: Without a doubt direct feedback from anyone using the app! Constructive criticism will help me to tweak the app to suit its users and ensure the app is doing its job. For me, Tally is all about its users and connecting people long-term. Q: So what does the future hold for Tally? A: I think exciting times are ahead, especially with the launch of Tally to Android later this year. Tally has achieved so much in a very short space of time and provided people continue to download the app, we will continue to grow and evolve in a way that has our users best interests at heart. gotallydating.com A B S O L U T E LY. PRIME PURCHASE CHISWICK L ANE W4, £3,000,000

I

t is unusual to find such a substantial Edwardian house in a prime location in Chiswick. The house offers everything a buyer could want. Some of the major attributes of this semi-detached house include six double bedrooms, five bath/ shower rooms, a 70’ garden, offstreet parking and a basement currently used as a cinema, which could also be used as a separate selfcontained flat. One of the highlights is the master suite on the first floor, which offers a substantial sized bedroom, large

bathroom, dressing room and a charming terrace. Perfect for those Sunday morning coffees watching the sunrise. The general feel of the property is one of grandness and space, which is attributed to the high ceilings and larger-than-average room sizes. This would be an ideal property for an expanding family, for many years to come. Although it can prove challenging in this part of west London to find a large garden, the 70’ garden here is perfect, not only in size, but also due to the fact that it is not overlooked,

“the property is one of grandness and space, which is attributed to the high ceilings and larger-thanaverage room sizes.” and it has a generous raised barbeque and lounging area. Chiswick Lane is perfectly positioned. Moments from the High Road, one will find High Road House Brasserie (part of the Soho House group), numerous restaurants, including the renowned La Trompette, and an array of independent fashion boutiques and shops. Chiswick Lane provides easy access to the M4 for easy journey to Heathrow. Turnham Green and Stamford Brook underground stations are a short stroll away. Another benefit is the proximity of the river, with its historic character and numerous riverside gastro pubs. Chiswick Lane is within 200 metres of Chiswick High Road and a quarter of a mile away from Turnham Green and Stamford Brook tube stations.
