EDITOR’S LETTER

I

consider my job pretty glamorous; trying out the latest Islington hot spots, dining out at all the wonderful eateries in the area – for research purposes only, of course – and getting the chance to interview fabulous local celebrities. And this month has been no exception, and in particular my bid to bring you an up-to-the-minute interview with the hottest band of the summer, the Noisettes. Playing this month at the Union Chapel, I eventually got my interview time with lead singer Shingai Shoniwa, and guitarist, Dan Smith while they were in LA writing material for their third album. Well, I eventually chatted to Dan in La La Land, after he overslept and missed our arranged time, thanks to “a late night in the studio writing songs” – how rock n’ roll! Shingai, on the other hand, was a little harder to pin down, and after many emails with managers, PRs and road managers, I got to natter with the front woman about her excitement at ‘going home’ to Africa to play the Lake of the Stars Festival, and her gratefulness at having a job that allows her to fulfil her passion of travelling the globe – how glamorous! And on the subject of being glamorous and travelling, we head down to local hairdressers, Stasi Salon, to try out their latest hair treatment that is a favourite with all the celebs. Ridding your hair of frizz and giving it an A-list shine, Stasi’s innovative treatment is the perfect solution to holiday hair disasters and lasts a lot longer than your tan. We also reveal the must-have travel essentials that will make any journey abroad stress-free. If you don’t have any plans to venture abroad, then why not discover a local beauty spot that is often overlooked. Regents Canal, which runs through Islington, has an interesting history as revealed in this month’s In The Spotlight, and is the perfect place to spend a leisurely summer afternoon messing about on the river and discovering a few hidden gems. So inspired by the canal this month, we decided to do our fashion shoot there with clothes from Camden Passage veteran, Annie’s Vintage Clothing. Also this month, our foodie Carrie Mitchell opts for a slice of Italy, with a very satisfy trip to Upper Street’s La Forchetta, and uncovers the most glorious offering of ice cream. While glob-trotting, Jessica Batten, discovers the beauty and allure of the Greek Islands in this month’s travel feature. I hope you enjoy this month’s glam-packed issue! WE L CA LO

GIANT GREEN BUSINESS AWARDS The hard work of businesses and organisations to help the environment is being rewarded with Islington Council’s Giant Green Business Awards. Recognising local companies and organisations from supermarkets to schools, the awards highlight those who have done their bit to ’go green‘. The third Giant Green Business Awards include new categories for green building and sustainable food and eating, as well as previous categories such as sustainable transport and natural Islington, which looks at those who have improved the local environment. Sponsored by Enterprise, the awards are open to businesses, charities, community groups, social enterprises and schools. Entries close on 18 September 2010. The Islington Chamber of Commerce Summer Party and Annual General Meeting was well attended last month with a good mix of faces, old and new, who make up the membership body of the chamber. The president, Tim Attwood, was positive about the future, outlining the journey that the chamber has had to undertake over the past six months. After the AGM, Islington Chamber of Commerce kicked off their Summer Party at Kings Place in the Rotunda Bar overlooking the canal. The warm summer evening led way for a happy and relaxed atmosphere where guests enjoyed canapés and Pimm’s, while taking pleasure in being entertained by the superb Marco the Magician, and two masseurs from Body Work who gave guests head and neck massages. They also had a fantastic raffle prize draw, with the headline prize being a weekend for two in the Jury’s Inn in Prague, courtesy of Jury’s Inn Islington, a meal for two at Le Montmartre restaurant on Essex Road and two wonderful prizes from the Old China Hand in Clerkenwell. A great night was had by all.

Interview

N

oisettes are in LA and have been hanging out in the hills, locked away in a studio writing new material for their eagerly anticipated third album until four in the morning. Guitarist Dan Smith is tired and apologises profusely for his tardy arrival to our interview; he overslept. He would normally be awake before this, he explains, but they are currently co-writing with “this guy in a band” who doesn’t start working until late afternoon - meaning the London band are working until the early hours of dawn. Noisettes’ powerhouse frontwoman, Shingai Shoniwa, is still asleep, resting her versatile vocals, one would assume – it will take another five days before managing to pin the rather sweet and unimposing south Londoner down – however, both are fairly coy when it comes to revealing anything about their latest musical direction. “We have nearly finished writing and are 90 per cent there. There will definitely be something new before the end of the year,” says Shingai, giving little away; “I think we know where it is going, but it is hard to put into words. However, I think it is again going to be more of a stylistic jump from the last record,” explains Dan. “I wouldn’t want to preempt things by saying what it is, but it has definitely got strong directions. We are very happy with where it is going.” With Noisettes, it is always best to expect the unexpected. Formed in 2003, they didn’t hit the big time until their ubiquitous, Mazda-advertising Don’t Upset the Rhythm made them an overnight sensation and the ones to watch. Never fond of a formula, three years ago the trio sounded more indie with their debut album What’s The Time Mr Wolf?; an album that was awash with punk spirit and scorching blues-rock, which was followed up with a rare second chance, Wild Young Hearts, a set of glossy pop tunes steeped in soul, disco and harking back to the days of blues and jazz. Although Wild Young Hearts has been heralded as a modern-day classic, there have been accusations that it represents a calculated commercial advance from the 2007 debut. “I think there is a mix of evolution and commercialism. I think if you get

the wings to work creatively, you just want to do it so you pay homage to the part that does allow you to keep doing it, but also it is a balancing act of putting your own essential creative inspiration into it; it is about growing and evolving,” explains Dan. “We would get tired of doing the same kind of music. When we first started out as the Noisettes, the first album was more punky and visceral, but that was kind of a reaction against what we were doing before that. We were on this curve that ended up being the Noisettes.” Unwilling to admit that a desire for commercial success had anything to do with it, Shingai sees the move in a much more creative light; “I think the music we do is going to evolve, and the more our lives change and the more places we visit, you are going to hear those colours in the music. Album number one was like a rainbow with only the primary colours, album number two had purples and magentas and album three is going to have lots more colours,” says Shingai. “The music we make is always going to be a reflection of life and life stories evolving, and I am always open to new experiences and colours.” Calculated or creative, the fact that everyone was humming the chorus of Don’t Upset the Rhythm before it was even released, giving it the allimportant boost to number two in the charts, was a record company’s dream; but on the rock n roll flipside, perhaps considered a sellout? Dan is quick to point out that times

are a-changing in the music business. “We had been around and writing together for 12 years and we have been the band for a fair old time, and it seemed that there was a glass ceiling and there was no reason why we weren’t able to break through into territory that other bands were in. So when it happened, it was like, ‘f@*king hell, this is amazing.’ It might be seen by some as selling out, but if it hadn’t happened then, when would it happen? These days, it seems to be a way that all sorts of bands are having to survive by getting their stuff on adverts, because the whole infrastructure for bands to go out and get their music on the radio has changed,” explains Dan, “I think John Peel was a real big deal for bands to get their live music going. If you were a band that was doing really credible music that was considered marginal, if he liked it he would play you on Radio 1.You don’t have that any more; it’s a lot harder to break through.” The changes to their sound seem to have done the trick and got them the airtime they longed for. One of the obvious adjustments on the second album is that Shingai’s voice is showcased to its full potential and this, Dan explains, was something that was a new focus for the band. “On the second album we definitely took Shingai’s voice more into consideration and wrote more for her voice; that was one of the main criteria for the songs on the album. The first album I didn’t really think about her voice once, and I don’t think she really did either. There were so many people comparing her with singers that I thought she shouldn’t be compared to, I thought she was so much better than them. There was an element of her voice that people just weren’t seeing, and so the second album was important to show that she had a lot more to offer.” The Noisettes’ back story is just as multi-coloured as their musical evolution. Dan and Shingai met at the Brit School, the music academy that produced Amy Winehouse and Shingai’s once neighbour, Adele. Drummer Jamie Morrison - formerly of Living With Eating Disorders, Willis, Six Toes and Jaywalk Buzz – was recruited after Dan saw him performing on Later… with Jools Holland, with his then band Willis. 15

Interview

“I THINK THE MUSIC WE DO IS GOING TO EVOLVE, AND THE MORE OUR LIVES CHANGE AND THE MORE PLACES WE VISIT, YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR THOSE COLOURS IN THE MUSIC.”

Shingai is of Zimbabwean descent and has the look of a warriorprincess. She has roots in the circus world, perhaps explaining her ability to sing upside down, and has a passion for travelling. “I used to get up early on a Saturday morning when I was a kid in the early 90s and watch Phileas Fogg. I knew back then that I would be travelling; I have always been a little travelling crusader.” Shingai’s next big adventure with the band sees her returning to her roots in Africa for the Lake of Stars festival in Malawi in October, with an additional fundraising show at the Union Chapel in Islington this month. “I am so over the moon to be doing the festival and so overwhelmed with the idea that I am going home to play a show to thousands of people who have never really seen gigs like this in their lifetime,” says Shingai with childlike excitement. “I am looking forward to doing this gig because I feel that it will have a deeper meaning, because it doesn’t have anything to do with the commercial side of things. For me it is nice to know we are going somewhere and giving back.” The last time Shingai was in Africa was Christmas 2008 on a mother/ daughter tour, which she says was a truly inspiring experience and a great chance to use her ‘music money’ to pay for her

mother to return home after ten years away. “Last time I was there I met lots of musicians who told me their life stories and how they have managed through all adversity to provide music to their local communities. I learnt a lot about music outside of the commercial world and they showed me how music helps keep people together,” says Shingai, who has been trying to get the band to perform at the festival, which is situated on the shores of Lake Malawi, for years. “I am looking forward to revelling in the festival once we have performed. I want to watch other people play, run around barefoot and watch the sunrise.” Known for their outrageous and theatrical performances, Noisettes are considered one of the best current bands to watch live. “It is very important to us

to go out there and put 100 per cent into our shows, but I think we have a good contradiction where we can be very lively but also do something that is very serene,” explains Dan. For Shingai, she is still pinching herself every time she is on stage or boards another plane to some farflung destination. “It feels like it was only yesterday that I was jumping off boxes in warehouses and playing guitar with a loaf of bread. I had so many dreams of travel back then and I can’t believe that now I am doing something where it allows me to travel the globe. If that excitement ever disappears, then I think I am going to stop,” giggles Shingai. “Everybody has a dream and I am going to carry on doing mine, because for me it is all about the journey and I am still genuinely excited about it; and everyone is welcome to come along and party with us.” Count us in! Noisettes are at the Union Chapel 12 August www.unionchapel.org.uk For more information on the Lake of Stars festival go to: www.lakeofstars.org/

In The Spotlight

I

t’s a funny thing, but you could live in Islington for years and never see or think much about Regent’s Canal. The same is true of almost any part of London through which it passes, with the exceptions perhaps of Camden and Little Venice, where the waterway has become a central part of local life. But take a wander just a few hundred yards along the canal towpath and you’ll discover a haphazard and hidden world where nature, architecture and culture combine to create one of the capital’s bestkept secrets. The canal has its beginnings in the industrial revolution of the 19th century, when it was needed to serve many of the capital’s growing number of gasworks. It was constructed under the supervision of the architect and town planner John Nash, already famed for the elegant terraced crescents of Regent’s Park, and the imposing buildings of Regent Street. Once again, his close friend the Prince Regent (later King George IV) lent his name to the project: the Regent’s Canal was born. The first section of the canal, which ran from Paddington to Camden Town, was completed in 1816, and the Camden to Limehouse extension was opened four years later. By the mid-19th century the canal – along with the docks and factories it served – was a roaring commercial success. But a higher purpose was yet to come: during the Second World War, the canal provided an invaluable alternative form of transport when railroads and airplanes became high-risk modes of travel. The Regent’s remained an important gateway from the River Thames to the entire national canal network. The 20th century saw canal use dwindle as faster and cheaper forms of transport emerged. For a time, the Regent’s Canal – or at least the less visible parts of it – lay dormant. But recent years have seen something of a rebirth along the waterside, as entrepreneurs and estate agents alike have come to understand the pulling power of canal-side life. A brief walk along virtually any stretch of its nine-mile length will

reveal groups of paddling canoeists, countless joggers and cyclists making the most of a car-free through-road and, of course, plenty of brightly coloured narrow boats. For nature-lovers, the canal is home in the spring and summer months to various breeds of wild duck and other waterfowl – kids will love to watch the tiny ducklings pootling about on the water. And they’re not the only new additions to the canal community: local company, East London Boats, have recently set up a new punting station, which offers reasonably priced punts for hire and can even provide a chauffeur should you fancy the most leisurely cruise possible. And if all this relaxing action makes you hungry, the canal can even boast it’s own critically acclaimed café, right on the towpath. Cleverly, it’s even called Towpath, so there’s little chance you’ll forget the location – and founder Lori De Mori (a respected restaurateur and author of The Real Flavour of Tuscany) has managed to create a completely welcoming, buzzy little stop-off that’s perfect for quenching your thirst on a sunny day.Their penchant for all things sweet and rustic stretches

further, however, than their homemade recipes: it occasionally inspires special events like their recent summer barbecue, which saw a local folk band playing to hordes of happy customers from the gently swaying platform of a floating pontoon. But the canal itself is only part of the story, and you’re well advised to explore the areas that surround its many bridges and locks. With attractions including the thriving arts and business community at King’s Place (near King’s Cross), Camley Street Natural Park (near St. Pancras Lock), London Zoo (in Regent’s Park), and passing by Islington and Broadway Market (at London Fields), even a short trip along the canal reveals a diverse cross-section of London’s modern cultural terrain. Ultimately, it seems that Regent’s Canal has come full circle, restored to its former glory as a connector of local places and people. It serves (quite literally!) to reflect the development of the areas through which it runs – and as more people discover this calm oasis tucked away behind the familiar jumble of the urban landscape, you can be sure that it will become an ever more valuable part of local life. MUST-SEE The London Canal Museum should be the first port of call for anyone who wants to find out more about the canal’s colourful history. Housed in a former ice warehouse built in the 1860s, the museum lets you step inside a narrow boat cabin, stare into the depths of an original ice storage well, and discover how important the Regent’s Canal was to the commercial life of London – and especially the ice cream trade! OUR SUGGESTED STROLL Meet some friends for lunch at the ever-friendly Rosemary Branch pub (Islington N1). On a weekend, stop off to browse vintage clothing and furniture at the Pattern Market (Kingsland Road, E8). Amble southeast along the canal for half an hour, taking in the mix of modern designer apartments and original Victorian warehouses. Grab a coffee at hipster deli L’eau à la Bouche, then peruse the shelves of the fantastic Broadway Bookshop across the road (Broadway Market, E8). 19

SMOOTH MOVE Jenny White discovers the best treatment to keep your hair straight, shiny and frizz-free this summer

F

inally the summer is upon us and with it comes light evenings, sunshine-drenched days and humidity. Oh, the damn humidity! If, like me, you find it’s a constant battle to keep naturally wavy hair resembling something that doesn’t look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards, then listen up – I’ve got a secret to share. I have found the perfect solution to getting your hair looking frizz-free, healthy and feeling rejuvenated. Disclosed to me by my stylist at the Islington branch of Stasi Salon, the Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy sounded too good to be true. A specially formulated revitalising treatment that claims to eliminate up to 95 per cent of frizz and curl, the treatment restores and restructures hair by infusing a special blend of natural keratin deep into the cuticles. Initially, I suspected that such a treatment would mean having to subject my hair to lots of chemical straightening products and, after ten years of bleaching my hair and having only recently restored it back to its natural colour without the aid of chemicals, I wasn’t willing to put anything toxic in my hair. However, the beauty of this treatment is that it is completely natural and, even if you have highlighted or dyed hair, it is a safe and an ideal way to nourish your hair. A family-run business with another branch in Archway, Stasi Salon has been

offering a unique and caring service to all their clients for the past 40 years, and so from the offset I felt at ease putting my long locks in their hands. My stylist thoroughly explained the process before we started, explaining that it would take between two to three hours, depending on the length and thickness of my hair and the results would last between three to five months. The first step was to wash my hair with a special shampoo to help open

up the follicles, and then my hair was roughly dried. Next, the magic began. Each hair follicle was encased with a unique keratin bond and left for half an hour, before being combed through and rough dried again. The final step was to bond the keratin into my cuticles using the heat from straighteners. Sealing the treatment into my hair, I was given instructions not to tie my hair back with a band or wash my hair for the next three days. Now this may sound like hell to some, but I really enjoyed my break from my daily wash, blow-drying and straightening ritual and, thanks to my great stylist, it stayed looking good until I returned to the salon for its initial wash. The results? Well, it is no exaggeration to say my hair has been transformed. It now takes just 20 minutes from shower to sleek locks, as opposed to my usual 40-minute morning slog; and I haven’t even touched my straighteners. The beauty of this treatment is that my hair looks the best and the healthiest it has ever looked, but requires less time then before to manage it – I am even considering condemning my straighteners to the bin.  www.stasisalons.com 111 Essex Road, Islington 020 7359 1432 75–77 Junction Road, Archway 020 7272 6493 27

here are endless reasons why the LBD Ladies love summer. The weekend day trips, BBQ cook-offs, al fresco dinners, weddings, cocktail and pool parties, marquee discos and open-air arts: all ruddy good stuff. One summer staple, however, holds an extra special place in our hearts; an event that brings thousands and thousands of us together to share our love of music and mucking about, whatever the weather: we’re talking, of course, about the Great British Music Festival. But how does a city slicker used to all the comforts of home prepare herself for the inevitable hardships – no mirrors! mud! – of Glastonbury, which always marks the start of the season? It’s one thing to set off for a remote, waterlogged field with Hunter wellies at the ready, but if you want to ensure you possess the strength of spirit and unassailable joie de vivre required to face the worst a fezzy can throw at you, you’re advised to get together with friends for a few civilised drinks in more familiar urban surroundings. So it was that at the beginning of June (eager, us?) the LBD Ladies went to catch a gig by seminal ‘80s post-punk band Wire at legendary Islington venue, the Garage. The influential band were playing a one-off UK show as part of Mojo magazine’s ‘Honours List’ series – a run of gigs featuring stars like Roy Harper, Richard Hawley, Marc Almond and John Grant (at Camden’s Jazz Café).We were only too happy to dress up in our most post-punk little black dresses and watch a pitch-perfect show that dealt in as many great new songs as it did old classics. In fact, we had such fun at the Garage that we returned – after a fabulously sunny Glasto experience (no wellies needed) – for July’s amazing run of gigs celebrating the 10th birthday of Wichita Recordings, and featuring artists like Sky Larkin and The Cribs. So now we’ve found our festival feet just in time for a host of other local highlights; Loveboxx, Field Day, High Voltage and Underage in Victoria Park, and the 1234 Festival in Shoreditch Park. And if you’ve heard about these too late, don’t be disappointed: there’s still time to catch the LED Festival in Victoria Park.Taking place on 27 August, its impressive line-up includes dance and electronica artists like Aphex Twin, Goldfrapp and mighty Belgian band, Soulwax. Sounds like another great chance to put your best festival foot forward, so check out the blog at theLBD.co.uk for our exclusive guide to the very best festival dresses around.

Trend of the month COBWEB

You may be afraid of anything arachnid-related, but this season’s trend will be a helping hand towards overcoming your phobia. A style that looks to have been spun by one talented spider, the cobweb and fishnet-inspired look, is a very provocative statement that is a must to make this season. British designer Mark Fast has gained somewhat of a cult following for his fitted cobweb-knit designs, which have become the inspiration behind his new line ‘Faster.’ The new line features leggings, tube skirt/dress, highwaisted knickers and ballet dress, which are all great for stylish layering and have proved a popular part of his new diffusion line. ALL THAT JAZZ

A year ago, Islington bar Ladybird began to undergo something of a transformation; Helen Baron discovers what the Upper Street bar now has to offer

E

verything about the venue – from its décor and music policy to the drinks behind the bar – was reworked and improved. Under the supervision of Patrick May (Music, PR and Marketing Manager), who had previously revamped Manchester’s Odd and Odder group of bars to much acclaim, the Ladybird team have brought about the rebirth of an Islington venue, delivering internationally famous musicians and DJs – and all without charging a penny at the door. From the moment you cross the threshold at Ladybird, the decor seems to set the bar apart: graphic prints and paintings and contemporary graffiti art deck the walls, while recurring art deco motifs nod to a more classic,

jazz age decadence. The bar’s interior has been fully overhauled over the last 12 months and the distinctive mix of modern style and retro references is no accident. Ladybird is dedicated to serving up a wide and hugely credible range of music, courtesy of globetrotting guest DJs and amazing local artists, and Patrick is determined that great sounds should be complemented by great sights. Hence both the attention to detail, which is apparent in the bar’s design, and the presence of resident VJs (or Video Jockeys), dedicated to serving up visual delights to match the audio ones. In an age when chain bars and copious drinks deals often squeeze out independent initiative, it’s good to see a venue like Ladybird setting out to stake a claim on Islington’s busy bar culture.

Manuva’s keys player and producer, Oliver Knight, playing dubstep, reggae and more. The bar also throws contemporary jazz into the mix, which Patrick feels was an important move. “I wanted the bar to have relevance in the music world and to offer a variety of music genres that Upper Street lacks,” he says. “Jazz bands are also perfect for the set-up and décor we have here.” He goes on to mention Jay Phelps, one of jazz’s hottest emerging talents, who is currently touring Europe, has headlined the London Jazz festival and plays with a collective every Tuesday at Ladybird. “It’s amazing that we can put on musicians who [usually] play big venues with big ticket prices, but do so with no cover charge and in such an intimate setting.” For sure, the promise of leading edge post-bop and modern jazz complete with crimson seating, atmospheric lighting and a wide selection of drinks is an enticing Tuesday night proposition.

It’s done so by providing something money can’t buy: a sheer dedication to music. Ladybird is not just another late-night venue with a populist playlist – though it’s no bad thing that it opens until 4am on the weekends, something of a rarity outside the West End. The fact is, Ladybird offers a strikingly rich mix of music, from boogie and rare grooves to funk, electronica and old skool hip hop. Head down on a Saturday night and you’ll hear Brit rap kingpin Roots

And if weekends are more your thing, Sundays at Ladybird bring the ‘Sunday Soapbox’, a weekly funk and jazz jam that sees customers invited to join the music-making from 6pm onwards. Of course, the house band and Hammond organ are also on hand to ease any last vestiges of your hangover. Patrick is clearly effusive about every aspect of the bar, even down to the impressive artwork of the Ladybird

flyers. And he’s just as committed to maintaining the bar’s musical integrity, saying, “We’d never play a radio song.” All this enthusiasm and plugged-in activity makes Ladybird feel special – a place where the staff are truly passionate about what they do. Patrick remarks that, “People often say they feel like they’re on holiday here,” and you can see why. The inclusive musical roster, top DJs from around the world who don’t just play Ladybird but populate the nights themselves, the international staff and drinks menu, and the friendly vibe combine to create a sense of the exotic. Ladybird’s most popular night, Daikici, is run by a Japanese team and takes place every third Saturday. It sees eight DJs and two VJs take over both floors of the 240-capacity venue for an eclectic mix of rock ‘n’ roll, ‘60s and ‘70s music, jazz funk and pounding tech-electro. Another of Ladybird’s calendar highlights has been its recent twomonth festival, ‘Lazy Bird’. This brilliant concept sees the bar ‘transport’ its customers to well-known party destinations over a nine-week period. At the time of writing, the bar was gearing up for a Phuket-themed night, the penultimate event before the last Mexico City-themed party. The Lazy Bird idea was loosely inspired by the World Cup (the bar also showed the matches) and has brought Parisian DJs, German record labels and fun-loving party-goers to Upper Street. It has been so well received that Patrick says it’s likely to continue. But it’s not all about superstar DJs and forward-thinking jazz – one of the bar’s latest offerings allows customers to choose their own tunes. Welcome to the super fun-sounding Jukebox Wednesday, where you can bring your own CDs or MP3s and get involved. The night has an extra treat in store for girls, too, with sponsor Benefit Cosmetics providing makeovers beside the DJ booth. What better way to enjoy a girl’s night out than by indulging in a spot of pampering, putting on your favourite tunes and sipping on intriguing (and intoxicating) cocktails with names like ‘Hemingway Daiquiri’ and ‘Porn Star Fluffer’. Indeed, cocktails are something of a speciality. Not for Ladybird the 39

‘2-for-1’ deals of your standard high street night spot. Here, you’re more likely to tantalise your taste buds with something like the forthcoming clear-distilled Bloody Mary, or the ‘massive Martini’ – a giant Martini available to share between four people for just £15. Regulars will also soon have the opportunity to be rewarded with a member’s card that offers a discount at the bar as well as at other Islington establishments, such as Chilango Mexican Kitchen and Frederick’s. Patrick thinks that such offers are a crucial part of preserving and building on the bar’s neighbourly ambience and ethos. As Patrick says, Ladybird is a watering hole for so many people that live and work in the area, and has always received a lot of support from local restaurants. The member’s card is an exciting way by which local businesses can team up to give more value to their collective clientele. It’s this finely judged balance between high quality, varied entertainment, welcoming local warmth and stylish surroundings that has seen Ladybird speed to success over the last year. Now plans are afoot for a sister venture in the local area – one that follows a similar ethos and complements the existing venue, but which will offer something different as well. With more details soon to be announced, the news leaves us with a pleasant sense of anticipation – and where better to distract ourselves while we wait than at the excellent original?  70 Upper Street, N1 0NY 020 7359 1710

THAT’S AMORE! Carrie Mitchell falls in love with a gorgeous Italian on Islington Green

P

erched by the green in the heart of Angel, La Forchetta has been serving up hearty bowls of pasta and authentic Italian pizzas to passers-by for years, but the lacklustre exterior and mundane décor did little justice to the poor chefs slaving away in the kitchen. Not any more! Thanks to a radical refurb, the modest family Italian has been transformed into a sleek, sophisticated establishment much more fitting to its location on cosmopolitan Upper Street. All chrome and black leather, the interior is modern and stylish, recalling more the chic piazzas of Milan than the humble back streets of Naples. And the number one selling point? The irresistible display of luscious ice creams and sorbets, showcased proudly in a gleaming glass cabinet. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First, to the menu… Boasting a full page of divinesounding pasta dishes, another of tempting pizzas, and a selection of fresh meat and fish options, the menu’s not short on choice. Even reading down the starters list was enough to get my taste buds popping. Wilfully deciding to stick to my ridiculous low-carb bikini body diet, I sidestepped the bruschetta and garlic pizza bread, and settled on the Melanzane Parmigiana (that’s baked aubergine to you and I), followed by the Veal Saltimbocca. Over the table, my dining partner ordered king prawns to start, then decided to rub my nose in

my silly diet with a carb-laden pizza. Bubbling in its earthenware dish, the melanzane was layer upon layer of rich, cheesy, unctuous perfection – the zing of the tomato sauce cutting through the earthy flavours of the aubergine and mozzarella to create the ideal mouthful. If it hadn’t been for the absolute beauty of the prawns my friend was tucking into, I’d have polished off the lot – but as it was, I negotiated a swap halfway through, and boy, am I glad I did! The hefty specimens were among the best I’ve tasted – the addition of fragrant coriander, garlic butter, and lemon juice just enough to make them sing. Served in hugely generous portions, the starters might have fi nished us off if we hadn’t forced ourselves to stop. And

it’s just as well we did, as the supersizing policy was also evident in our mains. Presented atop a giant square dinner plate, my veal came with a heap of roasted rosemary potatoes, and a pile of carrots and green beans cooked to retain that all-important bite. The meat itself was topped with fresh sage and Parma ham, then roasted in wine and butter to give a wonderful full fragrant flavour. Over the way, my companion’s pizza was all an Italian pizza should be – stonebaked, thin based, and covered in delicious gooey cheeses, pepperoni, and flaming peppers. It was also gigantic – even with a little help from me, we couldn’t get through the lot and, all too aware of the call of the dessert cabinet, we fi nally admitted defeat. Barely skipping a beat after our plates were removed, we leapt up to survey the ice creams, fi nally settling on one scoop of ferrero rocher and one scoop of whiskey crème for me, and one each of coffee and straciatella for my friend. Words literally cannot describe the wonder of these ices, particularly the decadent rocher flavour – a personal favourite of the manager’s. Thanking him repeatedly for introducing it to my world, we headed off with promises to return soon, and we meant it – I’m headed back there tonight for round two. Bring on the gelato!  La Forchetta 73 Upper Street N1 0NY 020 7226 6879

MY

DESIGNER n a k a m a L r a f u o LIFENil

Following many years working as a project manager in Information Technology, Niloufar Lamakan became disillusioned with corporate life and decided to change careers and become an interior designer. After studying interior design, Niloufar set up Nila Design three years ago, basing her company in the Business Design Centre in Islington. With Nila Design going from strength to strength, Niloufar recently won an interior design award at the International Design Awards held in Los Angeles, as well as being a finalist in the Kitchen Design of the Year at The Design Awards in 2009 BUSINESS

Nila Design offers a holistic concept to completion service starting with the client brief, developing a design scheme, then introducing a builder, making sure the project is progressing to design specification, and ordering ttings all the furniture and fittings. We aim to look after every detail and take the hassle and stress out of the project for the client. But sometimes, clients just want a small job like buying new furnishings for one room, and we’re happy to do that as well. My background is in project

management, which is very valuable for running interior design projects. I’m used to managing budgets, people, timescales and quality of work. There’s a lot of problem-solving involved, so I work with all parties to deliver the original design vision. Nila Design style is contemporary, sleek and clean. We always try to add a little something to every room to make it special.

INSPIRATION

My work is inspired by fashion, art and architecture. I am drawn to simple clean shapes and lines, block colours, and unfussy yet complex design detail.

they’ve seen the design and know they will love the result. And of course, I love the shopping! My future plans for the business are to continue to raise the company’s profile and widen the client base. Beyond that, I see a lovely studio around Upper Street providing a design service, as well as selling beautiful and individual objects and art.

HOME

I couldn’t live without my family and friends, and their support and encouragement.

I source materials mainly locally. I like the face-to-face contact with my suppliers, and it saves on travelling time. My interior peeve is design schemes that are too coordinated. So, I like to include unexpected shapes and colours to keep the look coherent and effortless, rather than trying too hard. My interior tip is if you have a small budget, get cheaper materials and have them well made by a skilled person. What I love about my job is seeing clients relaxed and happy once

The last book I read was Mr Rosenblum’s List by Natasha Solomons, who is a great new writer. I had the pleasure of hosting an author evening for her at my house recently.

such a wide choice of places to eat. When I’m not working I walk a lot and I love my ballroom dancing classes at Dance Connections. My personal interior style is quite architectural, with simple white walls dressed with beautiful objects and paintings. My favourite room in my home is the dining room, because I love to cook and entertain. And the view from the window at night is a bit like Hitchcock’s Rear Window!  www.niladesign.co.uk

My favourite artist is Mark Rothko, because his work exemplifies how simplicity and complexity can be combined in layers to create a beautiful object. My signature drink at the moment is sour cherry cordial. It’s sweet and very refreshing on a hot summer day. My favourite place to hang out in is restaurants in Upper Street. I love that it’s just a five-minute walk to 51

Local Spotlight

LOCAL PROFILE with Agnieszka and Adrian Pawlus of Polish Pottery

What is the concept of Polish Pottery? Polish ceramic pottery is very deeply rooted in local traditional art and craft and its history goes back as far as the Middle Ages. Thanks to this long-established tradition it has developed its own unique identity, from the functional stoneware to the unique contemporary work of art. Although steeped in history, it always combines new innovative forms and techniques, mixing them with local traditions and this is what we aim to do at Polish Pottery. What is your background? We are brother and sister and we grew up in Boleslawiec in Poland, a town which is an important pottery centre and famous throughout Europe for its ceramics. Boleslawiec is home to many ceramic pottery factories, including the internationally awarded Artistic Ceramics – where Adrian previously worked – and attracts masses of ceramists and sculptors, who attend the International Plain-Air of Ceramics and Sculpture, which is a convention that has been running for almost 50 years. So, we literally grew up surrounded by the medium. When we moved to London six years ago we discovered that Polish stoneware is highly

recognised in the UK for its quality, and the unique handmade products are very popular and that’s how we got started. Tell us about your products Our aim has been to gather the fi nest handmade Polish pottery under one roof – traditional and contemporary, functional and decorative. We are the only London based supplier of worldrenowned Polish stoneware from Artistic Ceramics. Their products are hand-decorated with the traditional stamp method and uses ecological glaze and environment-friendly paints. The functionality of this stoneware is extremely broad and can be used for serving meals, heating food in microwaves and roasting dishes in the oven. On a more unique note, we select items that are individually hand-crafted and very distinctive. We’ve got in touch with talented artisans from across Poland in a bid to build a selection of contemporary decorative ware, which has been made using various techniques. We especially try to fi nd artisans who like to experiment with their ceramics, adding other materials such as glass, wood or even metal, to make their pieces individual.

What made you come to the Islington area? In 2009 we were given the chance to have a Christmas stand in the Islington area, and throughout November and December we managed to get to know lots of the local residents. The feedback from them was really great and we could see that we had hit on something unique. When we got the chance to have a permanent base in the area we were really pleased. Our shop has been up and running for just over two months and we have had old and new customers popping in every few days, as well as people from out of the area. Do you enjoy being based in Islington? We’ve received a very warm welcome from local residents and been made to feel like part of community in the short space of time we have been open. With this extraordinary friendliness and kindness surrounding us from the start and with the range of antique and art shops that are considered amongst the best in the capital, we feel absolutely thrilled and lucky to be able to open our shop in Islington – we feel it was the best choice for us and our business. 65 Essex Road, N1 2SF 020 7704 2800

PRECI US JEWELS Michelle Krausz started her own business, Krausz Jewellery, after finally realising her true passion in life. Here the Islington jewellery designer reveals what inspires her collections, and how her designs have evolved over the years

What is your background? I studied fashion as a teenager – my father was a fashion designer and he had a boutique on the Kings Road in the early 1970s – so it was assumed I would follow in his footsteps, but unfortunately I didn’t fall in love with fashion. I worked in the exhibition industry organising events, but always missed my creative side. After several years of jewellery evening classes I knew I wanted to be a jeweller, so I studied a BA in Jewellery Design at Central St Martins. How did you get started in the jewellery industry? A good friend of mine had a jewellery event for me at her home, which was the first-ever Krausz Jewellery collection. I got such a positive reaction that I knew I was in the right industry. I’m pleased to say that after nine

years, many of those pieces are still being worn and in some cases have never been taken off since. What prompted you to start Krausz Jewellery? After the success of the first collection I felt it was important to start a “proper” business, so in October 2002, Krausz Jewellery was officially launched. What does Krausz Jewellery offer? I specialise in bespoke engagement and wedding rings, as well as remodelling heirloom jewellery. Krausz Jewellery also offers contemporary, fashion-led, limited edition gold and silver pieces using precious and semi-precious stones. What materials do you work in? All precious metals: platinum, gold and silver, together with precious and semiprecious stones. Where do you work from? My workshop is shared with an interior designer and interior stylist. The building is a creative space with 70 individual small creative businesses, from textile designers, illustrators, and artists to

Culture

photographers. It’s a lovely old building with a view and bags of character. There’s a constant buzz; we all get on with our own work but it’s great to have a creative opinion when you need it. What is a usual day at ‘the office’? Normally, the day starts by reviewing my commission projects, checking emails and web orders, and also preparing for any client meetings at the studio that day. There are so many stages in jewellery production, timing is crucial. Discipline is really important, so I’m at my bench at the most productive time of day (morning until lunchtime). I have several contemporary jewellery collections, in gold and silver using precious and semi-precious stones, so after lunch my time is spent making stock. There’s also lots of running around back and forward to the Hatton Garden area, buying metal or stones and anything I need for my current projects. I’m normally back in the studio again by early evening, and I get to have a little rest on the sofa with a nice cuppa. What inspires your work? The contrast of the textures of the urban landscape with the beauty of the natural world. Are you influenced by fashion trends? My collections always have a hint of fashion with an awareness of what is currently on-trend, but my aim is to create timeless pieces that will be worn for years, rather than just the current season. How did your ‘Flowers, Butterflies, Bees’ collection come about? When I inherited generations of antique jewellery, I wanted to re-create those pieces in a contemporary way, whilst keeping the magic quality of the past. Do you have a favourite piece that you are particularly fond of? A 2/12 carat yellow diamond ring. I really enjoyed the whole process of sourcing the stone, working with the client, designing it, right through to making the ring. It is a piece that I’m really proud of.

was designed by Torde Boontje. It was a challenging project but a beautiful result.

What do you enjoy making the most out of all your ranges? The butterfly collection is special to me. I spent several months designing and researching this collection, using my mother’s many butterfly-inspired books, postcards and maps. How has your jewellery evolved over the years? My early work was entirely architectural and, whilst I still value the simplicity of geometric forms, I’m turning more to nature for my inspiration, using larges stones for bold statement pieces and splashes of colour. Do you take commissions and, if so, how do you choose to work with clients to get the best results? The majority of my jewellery is bespoke. The key to a happy client and an enjoyable working relationship is to listen very carefully to what the client actually wants. We look at lots of images, I produce drawings and make models if necessary, to ensure the client can visualise the final piece. It’s very important to spend a lot of time on the fine details to achieve the best piece of jewellery possible. What do you enjoy about being a jewellery designer? I’m never happier than when buying precious and semi-precious stones. I love the challenge of making a really difficult commission and seeing a satisfied client when they collect the finished piece. Do you ever collaborate with other artist/designers? I worked on a floral neckpiece project for Swarovski, which

Besides your jewellery designs, are you working on any other projects? My latest project is a pop-up shop (POPIN), a collaboration with ten other designers, which aims to reveal a small part of contemporary design in London, enabling the general public to enjoy and engage directly with the designers. I will be showing my work alongside makeovers by Anne-Marie Simak and consultations from The Chapel hairdressers, to name but a few local businesses involved. Why did you choose to start your business in Islington? Islington is such a vibrant and convenient location – you can get anything you need here, with lots of great cafés when I need a break. When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing? I love the unusual and outdoor days out, in and around London, days at the beach, the country or just wandering around – you never know where inspiration will strike. I also go to lots of art events and exhibitions, and I love spending time in the Tate Modern Café as it has such a great view. I’ve always travelled extensively since I was a child, and some of my favourite places are Mount Cook in New Zealand, as well as Cambodia, Laos and Rome. What are your plans for the future of Krausz Jewellery? Business-wise I intend to expand the web business, and produce a readyto-wear wedding and engagement collection. Also, I am planning a long-awaited men’s collection. What are you currently working on? A lovely sapphire engagement ring. What do you enjoy most about your work? Working with clients to produce bespoke pieces for them is truly what I enjoy about my job. www.krauszjewellery.co.uk 55

s we arrived at the Port of Mykonos, we were thrown into life on the island trying to get a taxi. With only 30 taxis on the island, this was no easy task. Little did we know that our hotel, Cavo Tagoo, was actually only around 200 metres from the port! Only a 10-minute walk from the Old Town, and a 5-minute drive from the airport, this hotel is ideally situated. Cavo Tagoo (meaning Tagoo Caves) is known as one of the most stunning stays on the Mykonos boutique hotel scene. The hotel is built into the cliffside, with views over the yacht-dotted harbour and out to the nearby island of Delos, birthplace of the mythical god of the sun, Apollo. The hotel consists of 80 suites, 33 of which have private pools (the waiting list for these can be long though, so make sure you book in advance). The hotel is decorated in a minimalist way, thus complementing the beautiful views. Each room employs

a traditional stark white, splashed with a block of vibrant colour. With four-poster beds, flat-screen televisions, and a bath that bubbles like a Jacuzzi, you won’t want to leave the room! Built in 1984 by five Greek architects, Cavo Tagoo won the first prize for Applied Architecture in the Aegean Region. Between 2004 and 2009, the hotel was almost totally rebuilt during the winters and the new Cavo Tagoo was finished. Now owned by Paris Liakos, one of the original five architects, the hotel philosophy is to ‘strive to be a canvas upon which our guests can colour their island dreams.’ Blending magically with its surroundings, the soft curves of the white buildings, the pebbles that cover the roofs, and the wood, stone and bamboo that has been used, all makes the hotel fuse with the natural surroundings. On day two we explored the island, having been informed by friendly hotel staff

that the best way to get around Mykonos is by moped (for those brave enough!). So off we set on our moped (only 15 euros a day to hire and 6 euros to fill with petrol) to discover some of the beaches on the other side of the island. The first one we stumbled across was Paradise Beach, which attracts a younger crowd and is known for its beach parties that go on long into the night. Our personal favourite was Agios Sostis Beach, one of the more secluded and peaceful beaches, which has a fantastic small restaurant to while away the afternoon in. Mykonos seems to have a beach to suit everyone though; wind surfers, gay-friendly, families, hippies and more. Mykonos’ ‘party-culture’ reputation had us expecting themed bars and groups of 18–30s, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. From the Cycladic architecture that makes up a maze of streets and alleys in the main town of Chora, to

down to Little Venice. As we drank and danced to Eurotrash music, it was 3am before we knew it and decided to call it a night! Something to note before coming to Mykonos is that food and drink does not come cheap. Beers average at around 7–8 euros, and most meals will come to around 100 euros. The next morning, with slightly sore heads, we made our way to the pool area for a day of pure relaxation. The salt-water infinity pool stands at the bottom of the cliff, with a bar on one side, which doubles up as a fish tank, and the restaurant on the other. With loungers that reach out over the pool, it gives a sense of floating and allows for constant dipping to keep cool. Maximising on relaxation, I decided to head down to the spa and treat myself to a pedicure; reasonably priced at 30

the boutiques, traditional churches and taverns, Mykonos is an island for everyone. Meandering down the little avenues, their buildings replete with pink-flowered vines and decorative fairy lights, was reminiscent of a film set. You may even spot Peter the Pelican on your travels, who is an integral part of Mykonos and the mascot of the island. You can catch a glimpse of the cute creature as it strolls leisurely through the city’s many alleyways. Dinner in the Old Town started around 9.30 and, while enjoying a leisurely stroll, we stumbled across Eva’s Garden. This family-run restaurant was quaint in decoration and provided a warm and friendly service. Seafood in Mykonos is a must-have and, while my partner enjoyed the Calamari, I would thoroughly recommend the Haloumi. After dinner we decided to experience a taste of local nightlife, by wandering

euros for one hour, it was well worth it as, believe me, my feet really needed some attention! The aim of the Spa is to fuse the latest in international spa trends with a simultaneous, traditional Greek approach to wellness and beauty. For those feeling a bit more energetic, there is also a fitness centre with an incredible Technogym Kinesis Wall. After heading back to our room to freshen up, we decided to indulge at Tagoo restaurant, one of the most famous restaurants on the island. The expert chef draws his inspiration from Greek cuisine fused with other cultural influences to take diners on a culinary journey. We enjoyed a local wine with our meal, and starters of crab for my partner and salad for myself, followed by the recommended beef dish for my partner and a Mediterranean pasta dish for me – delicious! To top it off, the openplan dining room was the perfect place to

enjoy the famous sunset, with a stunning view over the Aegean Ocean. Sadly every holiday has to end though. With heavy hearts we packed our bags and headed to the airport. We reflected on our time in Mykonos, deciding that this elegant and intimate boutique hotel experience had been the perfect retreat on one of Greece’s vibrant islands. Mission Relaxation was accomplished. 

WHAT’S ON THE Wonderful WEB?

Iain Scott looks at the 3 best things on the net this month Property Website of the month GO HOUSE HUNTING WITH GOOGLE

Social Website of the month WHAT’S TODAY’S DEAL?

I’ve seen a few ‘deal of the day’ websites pop up recently, but this one in particular focuses on your current location, which for us is London. LivingSocial.com allows local businesses to offer their products or services at hugely discounted rates, as the website guarantees a bulk-buy and mass advertising. This is great news for you and me, as we get a huge discount off things we either already do, or would love to try. Each day offers a different deal; previously, these have included indoor golf, massages, day spas and even pole dancing classes! So, if you’re looking for something to do or want to give something new a go, log on to www.livingsocial.com and book it online.

Health & Beauty Website of the month MEET ATHERTON COX

It’s not often you’ll find me recommending websites we already use daily, but this useful new tool from Google makes house hunting a pleasure. Simply log on to Google Maps (maps.google.co.uk) and click on the link next to the search box labelled ‘Show Search Options’. In the selection box that appears you’ll find ‘Properties’. Now, perform a search for your desired location and Google will kindly identify all the available properties for sale and for let on the map. You can even filter your search by price, number of bedrooms, and the type of property. Together with Google’s existing features like Satellite View and Street View, you can take a virtual tour of all the properties from the comfort of your own home. Log on to maps.google.co.uk to get started. Iain Scott is managing director of Islington based web design agency, Base Creative. Iain’s role is helping businesses make more of their online marketing.

If you have a suggestion for a featured website, email Iain personally at iain.scott@basecreative.eu.

Stretching just across to the other side of Euston, nestled in the heart of Marylebone Village, Atherton Cox encompasses all that is unique about the hidden areas of London; like Angel, it’s eclectic, unpretentious and stylish with a warm, neighbourly attitude. This truly unique salon is true to its word. One of our designers had first hand experience with Paul Cox; a highly experienced hairdresser and joint owner-manager. What I love about this website is its instant ability to get across the true brand; stylish, accomplished and modern. And true to its mantra of being personal and friendly, you get to meet the entire salon team online, so you’ll know who you want to cut your hair before you book. You won’t get that with the other trendy hairdressers! Take a peek at www.athertoncox.com and book your next hair appointment online. 58

It’s 2072 and following a cataclysmic economic and social decline, the UK has been abandoned by its inhabitants in a mass exodus. Almost everyone got out. The only people left were society’s outcasts – the criminals, the mentally ill, the unwanted children. In a disused office somewhere in the ghost city of London lives a group of twenty young people. They were all children in care. Either abandoned or orphaned, nobody loved them enough to take them on a plane and get them out of the country. Now they live in their own little society – a society that has survived, thanks to the organisational and political skill of their charismatic leader, a sixteen year old who calls himself “daddy”. This is the story of the rebellion that topples him. Almeida Street, N1 1TA, www.almeida.co.uk

ASK THE EXPERT

Coleman Coyle

Having been around for 26 years, solicitors Colman Coyle have built a reputation in the local Islington area for being experts in property practice, as well as having strong commercial, litigation and employment departments. Here they answer your property questions I am buying a property with my partner and I am not sure how we should own the property. Can you advise us? There are two ways of owning property jointly; a joint tenancy or tenancy in common. If you own the property as joint tenants, it means that, should one of you die, the deceased’s share will automatically pass to the survivor. If you own it as tenants in common, it means that, should one of your die, the deceased’s share passes in accordance with the intestacy rules or instructions left in a will. Most couples buy properties as joint tenants, but it may be more appropriate to have a tenancy in common; for example, if one of you has children from a previous relationship, or you contribute towards the price in vastly unequal shares. In these circumstances, it might also be worth thinking about a Declaration of Trust that would set out your respective interests in the property, which can also incorporate a mechanism for dealing with the disposal of the property in the event of a breakdown in the relationship. I am buying a house for £510,000. I understand that stamp duty is paid at the rate of 4 per cent on the purchase price. Is it possible to pay

£500,000 for the house and £10,000 for the carpets and curtains etc, so I only have to pay 3% stamp duty? Stamp duty is not payable on the value of chattels and therefore, in theory, it is possible to apportion the purchase price between the property and the chattels. However, in practice, this is much harder to do. The trouble is, there must be a genuine apportionment. In your case, there really needs to be £10,000 worth of chattels that have been left at the property. This is easy to do if lots of furniture is being included in the sale, but usually the only items included will be things like the white goods, curtains and carpets. It would be a blatant evasion of tax if, for example, the figure of £10,000 was placed against three pairs of curtains and a five-year-old washing machine! What am I entitled to when I extend my lease? A leaseholder has a right to extent his or her lease under the Leasehold Reform, Housing & Urban Development Act 1993. Before you can extend your lease, you must meet certain criteria. Once such criteria have been met, a leaseholder is entitled to 90 years plus what is left on the existing lease. If, for example, you have a 70-year lease, then the new lease will be granted for 160

years. Whatever ground rent is payable under the terms of your existing lease shall be reduced to a nil ground rent under the terms of the new lease. The terms of the new lease should generally be the same as the existing lease, although certain minor modifications are permitted and defects within the lease can be remedied. The landlord is also entitled to certain provisions to appear in the lease. Aside from the above, the landlord and leaseholder may be able to negotiate and agree upon other terms. I have owned a flat for 5 years and the lease has 81 years left to run. Should I extend my lease? The right to acquire a lease term extension is contained within the Leasehold Reform, Housing & Urban Development Act 1993. The Act sets out that when a lease falls below 80 years, the premium payable to extend the lease shall increase. This is because “marriage value” is payable. Marriage value is based upon calculating how much your flat has increased in value as a result of the grant of the new extended lease. A surveyor who specialises in carrying out valuations under the 1993 Act is best placed to advise on issues surrounding “marriage value” and the premium payable for a lease term extension generally.

t’s common knowledge that buying, selling and letting property are often the most stressful business transactions any of us have to undertake. Our family and friends aside, nothing is more important to us than the security of a roof over our heads and a stable, comfortable home, yet all too often we approach these transactions as casually as we would our weekly groceries, shopping around the big chains regardless of their specialized knowledge or commitment to the local area. Residents and investors in The City and Angel will be pleased to know that Where Next estate agents is a new one-stop property-shop based on Islington’s Essex Road and established and staffed by agents local to their neighbourhood for generations. With the additional benefit of over 30 years sales, lettings and property management experience, Where Next have the expert knowledge of the North London area vital to the first time buyer or those looking to build or enhance an existing portfolio. Where Next is part of the community, promising not only polite, attentive service but also financial help for buyers through their own independent mortgage advisor and a range of property management services for those looking to let. While so many of the major, national agencies rely on gimmicks such as liveried cars and in-store coffee houses, Where Next understand that their time and money is your time and money and too precious to waste on anything other than providing the best service they can for their clients. The world is changing; the days of buyers and vendors trawling the high streets peering in shop windows are over. With the benefit of the latest in-house, computerised property viewing system, with comprehensive photographs and floor plans, buyers have the opportunity to view potential purchases from the convenience of the office or their own homes, saving precious time on unnecessary travelling for countless viewings. For added efficiency, this system has the capacity to record the particular requirements for every single buyer or tenant, so that when properties become available matching their criteria the buyer to the property is automatically matched and vice-versa. Communication is a vital ingredient in building successful client relationships for any business; Where Next keep clients regularly informed of progress. Staff at Where Next are always available to discuss pressing issues and regularly convey feedback on viewings, as well as offering independent advice. Based in the heart of Islington with excellent connections with the local business community, Where Next has naturally developed extensive links with the established local media in all its forms to ensure that a vendor’s property receives the ultimate marketing exposure possible Director of Where Next, Laurence Brown proudly concludes: “At Where Next our philosophy is simple: treat every potential and existing client with the care and consideration we would a friend or neighbour. We consider ourselves to be traditional in our values but innovative in our methods. We have developed an in-depth understanding of the needs of clients, whether buying, renting or selling, as well as an invaluable knowledge of the local property market.” Leroy House, Unit 3Q, 436 Essex Road, London N1 3QP Tel: 020 3176 4150 info@wherenextislington.co.uk www.wherenextislington.co.uk
