MOVEMENT IN SLEEP UNION CHAPEL TOWER Movement in Sleep is the first in a series of three sitespecific exhibitions by installation artist Sarah Strang. The normally inaccessible space of the tower becomes a strange imagining of a bedchamber, with a multitude of blankets gathered from lives just beyond its walls. Visitors will be able to view this hidden interior via a video screen below and once a month those who choose to can climb the tower to enter this extraordinary otherworld of sleep. From child star to Eastenders favourite, Iocal girl Brooke Kinsella has had an illustrious career. The tragic death of her brother Ben, however, has seen her involved with various knife crime initiatives and government work. Gemma Billington chats with Brooke about her career, the charity and her continuing love of Islington

rooke Kinsella and I are ushered into an upstairs room at the brand new Ben Sherman boutique on Camden Passage. It’s the store’s launch night, and the shop is filling up quickly with well-dressed visitors (and more than a few celebs). Amid all the activity, we’re trying to find a quiet spot to talk. As I’m about to discover, Brooke’s schedule is as jam-packed as the launch party downstairs; currently she’s juggling work with the Ben Kinsella Trust, filming for Channel 4 and teaching at her Islington-based youth acting school, True Stars Academy, which opened last year. Born and bred in Islington, Brooke is a local girl to the core, loquacious and knowledgeable about her hometown. “I love Islington, there’s nothing like Upper Street,” she says, “it’s like a little village where we have everything.” It’s an exceptionally cruel irony then, that Brooke’s younger brother Ben was killed in Islington when he was just sixteen years old. “Everywhere I look I see Ben,” she admits, “a lot of people thought I’d want to get away after he died but for me, my whole life is here.”

INTERVIEW

I ask whether her memories and perception of the area have been tarnished since the incident. “No, they haven’t,” she responds, “purely because of the fact that the whole community - the whole of Islington - really came behind us when it happened.” Ben Kinsella was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack in the early hours of June 29, 2008. Shortly afterwards, a 500-strong group of locals marched from Islington Town Hall to the murder site, to call attention to rising levels of knife crime across London. It is this strong community spirit - particularly among young people - that is so important to Brooke and her family. The media has already labelled 2011 a year of youth anger, with the student protests, the Occupy London movement and (most significantly) the summer riots conspiring to paint a picture of a society in the throes of mass unrest. I ask if perhaps ‘community spirit’ is an antiquated or at least diminishing attitude in the city, but Brooke disagrees. “At the same time as the riots, you had people coming together to clean up afterwards.” she points out. “I think the power of the community is still very, very strong.” I’m wary of focusing entirely on Ben’s story, but Brooke is keen to talk honestly about her brother and tonight’s event celebrates Ben Sherman’s involvement with the trust which bears his name, and which was established shortly after his death. The prestigious clothing company contacted the Kinsella family to offer their aid in raising funds. “Not many people are brave enough - especially among big brands - to come behind us, particularly for such a controversial issue as knife crime,” Brooke says. “Ben Sherman’s support has been amazing, I hope it will start off a chain reaction with other companies.” The Kinsella family’s tenacious work with the trust and the government has seen changes in the

“I definitely think it’s the best way to relate to young people.” she says. “They’ll relate to a play, a film or piece of music a lot better than if you have a teacher or policeman lecturing them.” This leads us to another subject: her book, Why Ben?, which she “wrote every word of and completed in a month.” It must have been a cathartic experience to write, I suggest, and she agrees. “People ask, ‘How did you do it?’ But for me it wasn’t hard.” The book unabashedly explores the pain and heartache that Ben’s murder caused; everything from her anger at the government’s knife crime sentencing policy to feeling guilty the first time she laughed after his death. “I’ve never read it since,” she says, “I don’t think I could.” Brooke has been thrown into the spotlight over Ben’s murder and it is obvious she has trained herself to answer questions about the incident concisely and with confidence, but it is with this admission that her real sadness comes across fully for the first time: the rawness of the emotion is still evident. Despite the tragedy, Brooke Kinsella is a fortunate young woman able to pursue her passions in life. Her role as a spokeswoman for youth and knife crime may have been thrust upon her in tragic circumstances, but her career as an actress continues to flourish - only now her public profile is inextricably interwoven with the work of the Ben Kinsella Trust. She acknowledges this, saying, “My life has changed dramatically over the last three years but I couldn’t have it any other way because for me the charity is a passion.” Her determined attitude and commitment to both the trust and to young people in general, all the while maintaining her own creative career, are truly admirable - not to mention a true credit to her muchmissed brother.

“i LOVe isLingTOn, There’s nOThing Like UPPer sTreeT,” she saYs, “iT’s Like a LiTTLe ViLLage Where We haVe eVerYThing” law and Brooke awarded an MBE in 2011; the funds raised through Ben Sherman will go primarily towards a mobile exhibition launched this month which will tour schools and youth centres to celebrate Ben’s life and highlight the devastating effects of knife crime - from the perspectives of both affected families and former offenders. An aspiring graphic designer, the notion of celebrating Ben’s creativity and talent is very much prevalent in the trust’s initiatives. Brooke attended the Camdenbased Anna Scher drama school and started her acting career at the age of six. As well as her most notable appearance as Kelly Taylor in Eastenders, Brooke’s roles in British TV and theatre have included the controversial Channel 4 film Kid in the Corner and The Bill, and this month she begins a four-month tour with a new play. As a shy child myself who flourished thanks to drama classes, the fact that Brooke was encouraged to enter acting by her mother in order to overcome timidity struck a chord with me. I ask whether she sees creative outlets such as art and drama as imperative to keeping young people ‘on the right track’.

ome to countless museums and the former residence of the infamous Bloomsbury Group, the area sandwiched between Tottenham Court Road, Euston Road, Gray’s Inn Road and Holborn is world famous for its historical associations with literature and learning. Bloomsbury isn’t all leafy gardens and blue plaques though, with more recent additions to local life - such as Bloomsbury Bowling lanes - affording residents and visitors a distinctly modern way to enjoy themselves every night of the week. Bloomsbury is fast becoming the place to go once the museums shut. Developed by the Russell family during the 17th and 18th centuries, Bloomsbury first came to prominence as a fashionable residential area - not least because

of its array of garden squares (there are ten of them in total). The beautiful Bloomsbury Square is circled by Georgian buildings and the Victorian former home of the Lord Chancellor. Gordon Square is surrounded by the history, philosophy and archaeology departments of University College London, and was a key meeting location for the Bloomsbury Group.

But it was the Bloomsbury Group that first put WC1 on the cultural map - it was here in the first years of the 20th century that Virginia Woolf and her literary peers met to discuss literature, philosophy, aesthetics and politics. Nowadays there are more options for those seeking entertainment of a less scholarly nature. Dr Ralph Rogers from The London Orthopaedic Clinic gives his expert advice on the ‘new you’ in the ‘new year’

I’m not in great shape after Christmas. So, I’d like to start a new fitness regime but am worried about overdoing it. Do you have any advice on how I can lose weight safely? The trick to weight loss is to be realistic. Losing weight too fast (more than 2lb a week) can leave you at risk of malnutrition. Instead of the latest ‘fad’ diet, try to make changes to your lifestyle. Cut down on saturated fat, sugar, salt and always have a proper breakfast. To accelerate weight loss, try gentle exercises as these will burn off additional calories and produce feel good endorphins. This will make you feel better immediately, especially if you are affected by the long winter nights. Every time I go to the gym I end up doing the same old exercises so never really feel like I get an all-round work out. Could you recommend ways to improve my gym experience? Remember these important points: Work all muscle groups, if you only focus on your upper boy, don’t be surprised if there isn’t as great an improvement in muscle strength or size. Keep your heart rate up, don’t stop or slow down; when you have completed your first exercise, move straight on to the next. Be imaginative, and change your circuit; if you are becoming a bit bored seek advice from a personal trainer, they can show you how to exercise the same muscle groups but using different machines or trying different exercises. Take a friend, a friend can help to push and encourage you to complete the exercises. I’ve been doing my best to keep fit over the winter months but unfortunately had an injury when running and had to rest up. Is there anything I can do in terms of rehabilitation and getting myself ready to start exercising again? If your fall has caused damage do not consider running until you are fully healed. However, depending on your injury, you can consider gentle exercises. For example: Swimming is an excellent cardiovascular and full body work out, with all the benefits of other cardio activities, but with the added advantage of having your body supported and resisted by the water. Walking is low impact and you can still burn calories. By walking briskly, head up, back straight and swinging your arms, you can burn 180 calories in just 30 minutes. n a particularly wet and miserable winter afternoon, the sleek tasting room at the Antique Wine Company - set out with wine glasses and canapés in anticipation of our visit - is a welcome sight indeed. Founded over 25 years ago, the wine merchants moved to their prestigious Marylebone address in May 2011, and the tasting courses have been running since September. Surely this was on the back of client demand, I suggest. “We wanted to strengthen our business here in London,” Stephen says. “We felt the best way was to share wine with potential clients. It’s good to get that practical experience coupled with a bit of theory. Most

people who buy wine invest as a secondary consideration, the primary reason is because they enjoy drinking it!” Courses are available for tipplers of all levels of expertise, and a Tuscan Masterclass and Starter’s Guide are planned this month. The company’s extensive global database of châteaux, vineyards and producers mean that they are very well equipped for the job. Despite a penchant for old and rare bottles, over 50% of stock is less than five years old and there is an interest in sourcing potential antiques of the future. When it comes to fine wine it is easy - particularly for a novice such as myself - to feel a little intimidated. The atmosphere today

is immediately welcoming, however, and the team are quietly busy in preparation for tonight’s cheese and wine tasting event with Telegraph writer Susy Atkins. The occasionally stuffy attitude in fine wine society is something that Stephen and

renowned wine writer and tutor, John Stimpfig are quick to address. “With the classes, we wanted to give real structure and make them fun; we don’t want them to be intimidating,” John says. “We all make mistakes but that’s part of the learning process - the whole point of what we do here is just to make it enjoyable.” Enjoyment is a word that’s used frequently and both Stephen and John are animated when discussing their ‘life in wine’. Stephen admits that the business started as “a bit of a hobby”, while John began his career 20 years ago through wine education. “Like a lot of people, I went on a course not knowing anything about wine whatsoever,” he says. “I was just enraptured by all these new facts on these wonderful wines. People become thirsty for more knowledge.” My companion and I blind-test a glass of white (a superb bottle from German estate J.J Prüm, a personal favourite of John’s) and are introduced to the techniques of wine tasting before even putting the glass to our lips. Stephen insists that wine engages all five senses: even the ‘inviting’ sound of the cork is part of the experience. Each table in the room has a contemporary light box installed for an in-depth look. The texture, ‘legs’ and rich hues all reveal something about the wine’s origins. We take a whiff. The first thing to decipher is the quality of the drink if anything is wrong - and to try and pick out the multiple components. This is the area I find most difficult; how do you describe and break down the myriad aromas? John agrees that it’s tricky and also notes that taste and smell are unique senses.

“We all have our sort of internal world of taste,” he says, “and often at tasting courses someone stands in front and says ‘this smells like X’. The power of suggestion is so strong that everyone just agrees. What we do here is say ‘this is how I interpret the wine but you may think completely differently’. The most important thing is how it tastes to you and, above all, do you like it?” The wines we try are delicious and there isn’t any pressure to accurately describe them as if we’re taking part in a test. Instead we indulge in the anecdotes and stories behind some great wines. I’d imagine that both Stephen and John would make excellent guests at a dinner party... not to mention that they’d bring the best bottle to the table. It’s all GREEK Shed those new year worries with transparent tastiness at N1’s The Real Greek Words: Helen Baron

f December is traditionally a month for partying, presents and every kind of indulgence, then January is supposed to be quite the opposite: a time for self-restraint, saving pennies and counting the cost of all the fun you’ve had in the year just passed. Except that we at Zest Media have an ace up our collective sleeve, in the shape of The Real Greek… Founded in 1999, The Real Greek first opened its doors in Hoxton Market, N1 – the brainchild of Greek chef Theodore Kyriakou and his business partner Mark Yates. The pair had a plan: to take the traditional strengths of Greek restaurants – fresh ingredients, authentic ‘old country’ recipes, the taverna’s welcoming atmosphere – and create something with a more upmarket, contemporary feel. It wasn’t long before the idea began to bear fruit. Local residents flocked to the newly opened restaurant – as much for its magnificent interior as for the modern take on classic Greek meze dishes. The Real Greek’s Hoxton outpost is housed in a converted Christian mission hall, a space which on Zest’s visit somehow managed to match gasp-inspiring scale – high ceilings, a huge wheellike chandelier above the curved bar

– and a cosy, homespun intimacy. The Real Greek was purchased by the Clapham House Group several years ago and, with the investment provided by its new owners, has retained its old charms while flourishing as a chain. It boasts branches in Spitalfields Market, Bankside, Marylebone, Westfield and Covent Garden – but don’t come here expecting the typical chain experience. On our visit, it quickly became clear that The Real Greek doesn’t specialise in faceless ‘in and out’ dining. That’s partly because the eating experience – mostly made up of meze sharing dishes – is so social, and partly because the waiting staff are so knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, without being at all overbearing. It’s also down to Operations Manager Christos Karatzenis, who has spearheaded a service policy that seeks to understand the modern diner, and to make eating out a healthier, more transparent experience. We chose a selection of delicious meze, including tiropitakia – delicate filo pastry parcels filled with creamy spinach, leek and feta cheese; loukoumades – dumplings packed with black olives, sun-dried tomatoes and an amazing feta cheese mousse; salt cod home cured

and fried in beer batter, plus the tastiest hummus we’d sampled in many moons. This was accompanied by souvlaki – halloumi and mixed Mediterranean vegetables grilled and served in a flatbread wrap – a kind of healthier Greek kebab. But there’s a reason why The Real Greek is the main January destination for anyone looking to make up for Yuletide immoderation while still enjoying every mouthful - the menu lists the calories in all items – from meze to desserts to drinks – and allows diners to make up their mind about how many they end up ingesting. “The Real Greek empowers its customers, providing them with the opportunity to make informed choices on what they put into their bodies. o you remember the paint effects craze that swept the interior design world in the 1980’s? If you are too young, let me tell you that colour-washing, dragging, stippling and marbling were all the rage, and even bunched up plastic bags dipped in emulsion paint were dabbed over walls to give the appearance of an aged, fresco look. Doors, skirtings, fi re surrounds and even floors were painted to look like anything but wood. The hugely successful book,

‘Paint Magic,’ showed us how to do it ourselves and those who couldn’t afford to pay a skilled decorator experimented with the joy of paint. But by the mid ‘90’s, big businesses had jumped on the band wagon and were producing wallpapers that could instantly recreate the look with no effort – it stopped being fun and the trend moved on. Since then minimalism has ruled – it’s so much easier to pick up a pot of brilliant white - but traditionalists and those with a passion for the antique and classical have never

lost their love of traditional skills. Marbling, wood graining, gilding and tromp l’oeil painting are difficult and time-consuming techniques, and amazingly, there are still those who can restore a room to its original splendour, or emulate the interior of a french chateau. Those painters who trained with the best of the masterdecorators are keeping alive ageold skills in our digital, fast-moving age, and are able to recreate anything from an 18th century palace to a Swedish farmhouse. 47

Water baby Gemma Billington discovers North London’s hidden gem

n Primrose Hill, the stretch of water between Regent’s Park and Camden is home to a rather special secret. On the Water is a custom built canal boat-cumboutique hotel; serving as a unique venue for events, dinners and mini getaways. Even a native Londoner would be hard pressed not to be bowled over by this charming boat and its tranquil setting, far from the high-rises and busy streets. My ‘check-in’ is a brief meeting and handover of keys as I then find my way down a ‘secret garden’ style path to a selection of moored boats. On the Water stands out from the rest in its size - both width and height - and the plain white exterior belies the beautiful space inside. A simple yet chic palette of creams and greys, its decked out with modern appliances, delicate accents such as white roses, candles and fresh bread, cereals and jam for breakfast.

New Year, New Yoga Helen Baron finds inspiration for a better way of living on North African shores

ou know you’re in trouble when the new year clichés make you feel just as jaded and weary as the party season itself. Emerging from the end of the year feeling toxic and tired, then trying to turn over a new leaf from the darkest depths of bitter January is a laudable thing indeed; it’s just that nowadays there are whole industries dedicated to balancing the burn out, and it can be a little dispiriting to find that the path to greater purity is flanked by an influx of false marketing promises. The trick is to get away from it all entirely and find a new focus. And if you’re seeking a new year destination 54

that will help to wash away the modern pollution and put a healthy spring back in your step, Lalla Abouch is the real deal. Owned and run by Lucrezia Mutti, it’s an intimate guesthouse in Essaouira, Morocco, just three hours drive from Marrakech to the coast. On arrival, the rustic-charm box gets a big tick: simple and unassuming, the rooms are literally carved from the white stone walls and decked out in true agrarian style. On cooler nights in the winter months, cosy fires crackle in the lounge area and shower room. It’s an inviting sight. More impressively still, Lalla Abouch lives in harmony with the

land, using traditional farming methods in its quest to grow its own organic produce. Lucrezia proves to be an excellent host, regaling her guests with a wealth of historical info about the local area as well as explaining the provenance of the ingredients that make it to her table. Most are home grown, all are local, and every meal is lovingly prepared on site by our chef for the week, Harold Schmitz. Which brings us to one of the guesthouse’s great revelations: Ayurvedic cooking. The Ayurvedic philosophy posits that good digestion is at the core of general wellbeing, and as such every meal is designed to offer a perfect balance of flavours and natural nutrients in order to prevent cravings or digestive troubles later on. During my stay, the fare eschewed extreme flavours and temperatures in favour of a more subtle and satisfying approach. I’m proud to say that my bag of emergency chocolate was left intact in my luggage. We were treated to a plethora of dips with homemade flatbreads and dishes such as lentil dahl, aubergines and adzuki beans, curried fennel, and zucchini and buckwheat. We enjoyed the fruits of the farm and local markets in the form of fresh salads, goat’s cheese and the most flavoursome herbal and mint teas. Lucrezia harvests oil from the nuts of the area’s indigenous argan trees (though she has a small herd of very adventurous goats who try to beat her to it) and even presses her own olive oil using a millstone and camels. Harold explained the therapeutic and balancing effects of each meal, necessary for good digestion. His recipes were astoundingly delicious and satisfying; so full of energy-giving nutrients that I was able to cut out coffee and snack only on almonds

and fruit, without once experiencing a pang of hunger. Lalla Abouch can cater for up to seven people on various programmes that can be tailored to suit the group, but I was there to try the new Yoga Retreat series set to coincide with the arrival of the full moon – and a hectic few weeks prior to my trip meant I couldn’t wait to limber up and de-stress in the hands of the experts. The yoga sessions were led by Lisa Nicholas, who runs her own yoga school and therapy centre in Switzerland and has 25 years of experience. Also a trained healing therapist and former professional skier, she practises a form of Hatha yoga that is at once restorative and enjoyably challenging. Our morning sessions began with half an hour of meditation, then progressed to gentler poses, gradually working up to stronger ones; in the afternoon, we reversed the procedure. Often with more dynamic forms of yoga, Lisa told us, the postures themselves are compromised, at least at beginner level. She focuses instead on more precise alignment. This ensures the postures work more deeply, improves body awareness and

is a great way to build a foundation from which other forms of yoga can be explored. The size of the group also allowed Lisa to adjust our positioning and explain the postures fully, as well as participate in the various breathing exercises properly.

My stay left me re-energised and refreshed and especially grateful for having had a chance to meditate in such surroundings In keeping with the Ayurvedic principles that underpin the retreat, another specialist, Christine Haouas, was on hand every day for massage treatments. Specialising in alternative healing methods and having worked previously as a relaxation teacher and naturopath, Christine’s massages were the icing on this already massively appealing cake. Christine specialises in her own kind of ‘intuitive massage’, focusing on the places where the body needs special treatment. I enjoyed a full body massage and further reflexology. Lalla Abouch is everything you could want from a yoga retreat

(particularly if you’re looking for one that is more focused on wellbeing and balance than the more ‘bootcamp’ styles available today). My stay left me re-energised and refreshed and especially grateful for having had a chance to meditate in such surroundings. I will remember our first sunset session fondly; our group sat on a rug, wrapped in blankets, the sounds of the nearby farm animals quietening beneath the darkening Moroccan sky. Founded by musicians Charlotte and Adam Caird seven years ago, The Forge is a unique restaurant, bar and venue with an emphasis on live music. Described as Camden’s ‘hidden gem’, it has undergone a recent revamp with a brand new bar and mixologist on board. We chat to Charlotte about what 2012 has in store... When did you start The Forge? What was the inspiration behind setting it up? The whole project started in 2005. We (myself and co-owner Adam Caird) had been freelance musicians until then and felt that there was a need for a small, intimate, acoustically designed live space that offered the best in young talent across classical, jazz and world music. 56

Why did you decide to run both a restaurant and music venue? We wanted to be able to offer the whole experience where audience members could enjoy great live music with quality food and wine in a relaxed and informal setting. North London based Burd Haward Architects are behind the awardwinning design; did they come up with the concept of separating

the two buildings or was this an approach you were always interested in? We worked very closely with the architects to realise our concept of a flexible space where the two areas could work separately, but could also easily come together. The design itself was also informed by the previous building on the site (the Café Delancey).

2012 will see some really exciting one-off events including our first ever Farmer’s Market in February and a Pop-Up Cannoli Counter (a Sicilian sweet treat) over the Valentine’s weekend. What makes The Forge unique as an entertainment venue? What do you like about your Camden location? We are unique as we offer the highest quality facilities for acoustics but in a relaxed and informal setting. We are like a concert hall but without the stiffness or formality. We are also very easy to get to from all parts of London. The Forge itself is slightly tucked away so we like the fact that we have been described as one of London’s hidden gems. We are unique in that we offer such a high calibre of musicians and food - recent musicians have included Claire Martin OBE and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Tell us about the new bar you’ve launched. We’ve recently had the pleasure of welcoming to the team a fantastic mixologist who has created an enviable cocktail menu! We grow many herbs and a few fruits on site so he’s currently infusing and mixing spirits with homegrown rosemary and lavender along with a few tomatoes and strawberries. This keeps our cocktails seasonal, which is in line with our cuisine.

What should I do? Owing to the fact that your landlord is being difficult, then it really is in your interest to protect your position. Having 81 years left to run on your lease is critical. This is because a certain and often significant sum of money payable to the landlord and known as “marriage value” is not payable where there are over 80 years left to run on the lease. It could be that your landlord is being difficult or delaying matters to see if whether or not you let your lease fall below 80 years to gain more money. In the absence therefore of being able to negotiate with your landlord then subject to meeting criteria, you can serve formal Notice pursuant to Section 42 of the Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 upon the landlord to acquire a lease term extension. By serving Notice, you establish a valuation date. For you, the valuation date is very important because it, for example, means that as at the date you service formal Notice, you have set the number of years left on the lease as at 81, the present value of the flat and so forth. These are all relevant when it comes to valuing the price that is payable for a lease term extension.
