EDITOR’S LETTER

H

urrah for Christmas! Our festive fashion storyboard meant that we were joined by a male model this month (which made a very welcome change). Head on over to our Art of Seduction shoot for your guide to being the ultimate temptress this party season! Our UK travel page stays a little closer to home this time around - Duke’s Hotel is home to the best Martinis in the capital - ideal for those of you who work in town or have forthcoming Christmas parties. On the topic of office parties, be sure to check out our Culture feature on Chris Green and Ursula Martinez the very talented writers of and performers in The Office Party -The Pleasance Theatre production you’ve no doubt seen acclaimed and applauded across the press. Elsewhere, our local spotlight profiles Central Saint Martins, as we welcome the art college to its N1 home - this prestigious addition, surely adding hugely to the cultural diversity of the area. What’s more, it’s just a hop away from Marcus Wareing’s spectacular new restaurant, the Gilbert Scott. This buzzing brasserie provides further evidence of the King’s Cross rebirth and is another Xmas drinks hotspot; for a more detailed review, check out our Food Spotlight. All this talk of festive activity is getting us rather excited at Zest HQ - Upper Street is abuzz with lights and good cheer... so we wish you a very Merry Christmas and invite you to join us in celebrating good times, now and on into the year ahead!

London gallery Whisper, in collaboration with XOYO presents a vibrant look at an old-school icon, featuring contemporary fine art portraits of an array of vintage boomboxes. The New York based fi lmmaker and photographer has directed music videos for artists such as Rufus Wainwright and American HI-FI. He also shot the cover for the September 11, 2001 issue of Time, which was ranked as one of the most important magazine covers in the past 40 years by the American Society Of Magazine Editors. He spent years collecting and photographing a remarkable set of vintage Boomboxes, resulting in an arresting, unexpected photo series of these cult objects, all of which have been documented in his book, The Boombox Project: The Machines, The Music, and The Urban Underground, featuring an introduction by Spike Lee. This is the first time the full exhibition will be on public display in the UK. ‘The Boombox Project’ by Lyle Owerko presented by Whisper will be exhibited at XOYO from 2nd – 7th December and at Whisper from 9th December – 14th January. whisperfineart.co.uk, XOYO, 32-37 Cowper St, EC2A 4AW 6

INTERVIEW

N

icky Hambleton-Jones is the perfect example of an overnight success whose ascent to fame was anything but ‘overnight’ at all. A successful stylist with her own business long before she began gracing our screens as presenter of hit show Ten Years Younger, one of the first things HambletonJones tells me when we speak is that, until a year or so before the programme was produced, she’d ‘never actually thought about doing TV’. When her professional success began to attract enquiries from various production companies, she realised what a great way TV could be to grow her business - but most of the projects in which she was asked to participate never came to pass. Then one day, she got the call that would change her life. “The moment I read the brief,” she says, “I just knew it was going to come off. I knew this was for me... But obviously I’d never done it before, and I didn’t have a clue what I was doing! I did a screen test, then another screen test - and then it all happened really quickly. I got a call one Friday telling me I’d got the job, and the next Friday we started filming.” It sounds very sudden - and daunting to the point of petrifying - I say, and Hambleton-Jones agrees: “But looking at it now, maybe it was for the best. I hope I’m better at it now, but considering I’d never done it before I think I did a pretty good job!” Recounting a success story is always a risky business, but native South African Hambleton-Jones radiates such humility, warmth and good humour throughout our interview that it seems only natural that she should become a much-loved TV personality. And it doesn’t hurt that her show is chiefly concerned with improving people’s fortunes by reinventing their self-image. She seems genuinely thrilled to have played a positive part in helping to turn so many lives around. “At first I was looking to promote my business. But it’s been an amazing experience. There are so many people

are put aside. I could never leave this city. Nowhere else will you find the choice you find in this city, the shopping is incredible.” A natural talent for evaluating and realigning both a person’s sense of style and their sense of themself, Hambleton-Jones’ business grew steadily - and flourished once TV turned the spotlight on her. She’s since become a household name, designed a range of amazing eyewear, written a book - Eat Yourself Younger - and manages to combine it all with looking after her young son. I wonder how she does it and she gives me a stream of details - but her general conclusion is “Every day is different, and it can be difficult. But I try to have defined hours so that work doesn’t get in the way of spending time with my son. Every Friday is my day for putting on my more relaxed ‘yummy mummy’ clothes and going to the park with him and stuff like that. I love it.” Is Hambleton-Jones a big shopper herself? What look does she go for? “I love classic, tailored looks, with a hint of forties glamour and some bright, bold colours thrown in. That’s my idea of perfection.” But back to business, and I’m moved to ask the golden question: what is Nicky Hambleton-Jones’ number one styling tip? She thinks for a while, then offers: “Never leave the house without a statement accessory. Whether it’s a great belt, a beautiful scarf, a beautiful ring or even a certain colour you like to wear. An accessory can make any look more bold and fashion-forward.” And with that, I take my leave, determined to follow her advice; I’m already planning my next key accessory.

“NOWHERE ELSE WILL YOU FIND THE CHOICE YOU FIND IN THIS CITY, THE SHOPPING IS INCREDIBLE” I loved. It was the ultimate makeover show. Simon, a guy we helped from season four - at the beginning of the show he was rundown, his teeth were black... And we transformed him, by the end he looked gorgeous. It was really rewarding to contribute something to someone’s life.” And yet for all her skills, Hambleton-Jones wasn’t always a stylist. Coming to London after university because she had friends in the city and a British passport, she first worked as a management consultant. She went, in her own words, ‘from one redundancy to the next’, but still believes it provided amazing experience: “If you look at my CV,” she says, “it has a little bit of everything. I understand the financial markets, the beauty industry... It gave me a great awareness of the business side of things.” But fashion was a passion and ten years ago Hambleton-Jones was one of the first to set out her stall in the still-fledgling styling industry. London itself played a big part in her choice despite the weather. “I go back to South Africa and I think, yeah, it’s sunny all the time, the weather’s beautiful... Then I come back to London and all my doubts

entral Saint Martin’s is on the right track for success. Amid the industrial clatter of copper, iron and timber, the new art school at King’s Cross Central is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Injecting a youthful energy into a previously dead landscape, the £180 million project is destined to become an iconic London landmark for decades to come. 15 15

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT

Evolving from pastoral farmland to the industrial heartbeat of the British Empire, King’s Cross has always been a place on the move - and as the current 67-acre redevelopment gathers pace, it has even been given its own postcode: N1C. King’s Cross Central has an increasingly diverse tenant mix, home to digital start-ups, publishing groups and the first truly 21st century art school. From the mid-19th century onwards, it was an industrial heartland; the first transport hub in Britain to combine rail, road and canal for the distribution of goods. Falling into dereliction in the latter half of the 20th century, the rebirth of King’s Cross began when the Eurostar moved from Waterloo to St Pancras International in 1996. Heralding a new era in communications, the area has witnessed the rebirth of St Pancras Renaissance Hotel and the creation of a new Central St Martin’s. Moving from its original home in Charing Cross, Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design (CSM) has transferred 4,500 students and staff to the former Granary building at King’s Cross. Inside the Stanton Williamsdesigned building, visitors will find the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries mingling in an amazing architecural mash-up. Faded Victorian brickwork sits alongside gleaming new structures, while the old railway transit sheds and vast granary store from the 1850s remain integral parts of the structure.

The building was originally designed in 1851 to store grain from wheat fields in Lincolnshire, which would be transported from King’s Cross to the capital’s bakeries via the Regent’s Canal - and by retaining many of the original granary’s Victorian features, the new Central St Martin’s pays elegant tribute to the area’s industrial past.

The juxtaposition of the baked brick façade with imposing modern beams and a transparent plastic roof works magnificently. A stunning, twelve metre-wide street serves as the Granary Complex’s main artery, while future plans for the site include a theatre, dance studio and pop-up studios in two former train sheds. As one of the most famous art schools in the world, the relocation of Central St Martin’s heralds a new era

for King’s Cross. The school’s alumni include luminaries such as Lucian Freud, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and PJ Harvey and the site will allow a new breed of artists and designers to participate in (and benefit from) one of London’s most important regeneration projects in decades. Students will be among those to witness the birth of 20 new streets, 10 major public spaces and hundreds of new shops, restaurants, galleries and music venues. And with the opening of King’s Boulevard - a leafy conduit linking the Granary Complex to adjacent sites students will see the creation of the first major street in London for over 100 years! When completed, the boulevard will reach out to King’s Cross and St Pancras International beyond, providing a crucial link for the 4,500 students flocking towards the nearby British Library. If Stanton Williams’ bold and ingenious plans are realised, the development will also act as the breeding ground for a new community spirit in and around King’s Cross. It is rare these days for an architect to be given the chance to reshape an entire urban landscape; especially in a city as old, expensive and crowded as London. But Stanton Williams has done just that - and given both the art school itself and the wider area a glimpse of a radical and exciting new future. csm.arts.ac.uk, Granary Building 1 Granary Square, N1C 4AA 020 7514 7015

LOCAL FOCUS

How did you get into the business of cake making? It was a hobby and a passion for years. In 2009, during the recession, I started selling a few cakes at the weekend to support myself. At first it brought in an extra £20-£50 per week, then it grew by word of mouth.

Close Up With Lily Vanilli - cake baking maestro and adventurer in all things flavourful

And how did you cultivate its ‘quirky and cool’ image? Ha-ha! I never think of having cultivated an image, I just followed my own instincts and aesthetic. There is no blueprint for decision making in the business, except relying on my own personality and tastes.

How long does it take to make a cake… what sort of different ones do you do? It takes anything from an hour (allowing cooling time and icing), to months (if you’re soaking fruit or making fruit cakes). I make new and different cakes every week, if not every day. Last weekend in the bakery we had a salted chocolate and cacao baked mousse cake, a

Courvoisier cardamon root cake, and a porter soaked fruit cake to name a few.

How do you approach coming up with the more creative ideas? I work on lots of different events and projects which force you to think creatively for different briefs and a lot of ideas come from historical research. I am currently working on my next event which has a Pagan theme. I’m looking at the religious and ritualistic origins of our cake traditions; it’s going to be good fun with lots of canapés. Most often at the bakery we start with flavours - as the seasons change we look at what is available and make something delicious.

How do you source ingredients? With

a lot of effort - it’s a long process and we are always looking for improvements. In the beginning, however, I sourced ingredients by simply going to Dalston and Ridley Road market.

What exciting clients have you worked with? I just made a cake for Daisy Lowe, which was great fun - we had to get it to Belgium for her actor boyfriend Dr Who! In the past I have worked for the V&A Museum, The Wellcome trust, Elton John, Vogue, Lulu Guinness and Alexander Mcqueen.

The Queen of

Colour Helen Baron achieves luxe locks with the Queen of Colour, Billie Crago…

T

here are some things you always imagine you’ll achieve by a certain age – let’s say 30. A good job, marriage, kids: the list is potentially endless. Among my own hopes, there was one thing that I assumed would be fairly easy to achieve – so when it didn’t happen by my 21st birthday, I chalked it up to bad luck and assumed that it had to work out by the time I reached 25. The goal was simple enough, on the surface: to find a dependable hairdresser. But 25 came and went and I was still flitting about from salon to salon, doing modelling jobs here and there in the hope of cementing a lifelong friendship with a top stylist. Many painfully long ‘growing-out’ periods later, I finally realised that allowing half my head to be shaved and the rest dyed purple was not the best way to forge such a relationship. So how to overcome the constant disappointment with colours and

styles; that sinking feeling that comes of having spent yet another small fortune on a Jackie Onassis blow-dry only to look in the mirror and think, how did this happen? I was about to give up on the dream altogether… and then I found what I was looking for, just in the nick of time. I arrived at The Chapel hopeful as ever, encouraged by the detailed consultation that preceded my appointment and the salon’s ‘catwalk colour wall’ of hair inspiration. Where colour’s concerned, it’s important to know that a salon will be willing and able to talk through exactly what you’re after – and tailor it to what will work best for you. A working knowledge of the latest trends is also a must – and is where so many salons fall down. I feel like I’m in safe hands as soon as I meet The Chapel’s colour specialist and co-director, Billie Crago. Her brief is to update my tired balayage colouring with her ‘floating highlights’ technique, so we begin by discussing my options at length. Billie tells me that her own personal spin on highlights suits pretty much everybody, creating seamless colour with the illusion of thickness for those with fine hair and luscious, healthy locks for those with naturally thick hair. The effect can be graded to achieve anything from a more classic glossy look or a grungier feel to a starker, dip-dye effect. The ‘floating highlights’

create a real contrast to your own natural colour with less commitment than regular colouring – because the intensity of shade builds gradually down the shaft of the hair. What this means, essentially, is that Billie is amazing with colour! I spent a good four hours in the salon but it passed in no time at all. Usually the fidgets begin once we’ve hit the one-hour mark – or else I’m too tired to keep up conversation – but Billie and I natter away contentedly and, as the colour is left to set, I’m moved to a cushiony banquette beside the walk-around fireplace. While I wait, I’m well provided for with gourmet apple crisps, a glass of white wine and enough Love magazines to keep me going ‘til dark. And the good news is that when I want to update my colour, the process will be much quicker, as I’ve already laid the foundation highlights. After the best blow-dry I’ve ever had (seriously - no Jackie O comparisons here – I’ve finally got the ‘messy in a good way’ hair I’ve always wanted), Billie assures me that there’s little to no re-growth and it will still look great as it grows out; though now I’ve finally got the hang of this colour thing, I think I’ll be back soon. In fact, where better to get my hair done for my forthcoming 30th birthday… I finally found what I was looking for, and that’s a milestone worth celebrating.

Want highlights like the celebs? Head to The Chapel….

Colour with Billie is charged at £68 per hour. thechapel. co.uk, 394-396 St John Street, EC1V 4NJ, 020 7520 0460 32

GREAT SCOTT

Helen Baron falls under Marcus Wareing’s spell at the acclaimed restaurateur’s latest London offering

M

ost of us know that Harry Potter’s Hogwarts train arrives in and leaves town via the secret Platform 9 3/4 at London King’s Cross - but visitors to the Gilbert Scott restaurant at London’s St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel may be forgiven for getting their stations mixed up. For a start, on entering the Sir Gilbert Scott you experience a sensation not unlike the amazement felt by Harry the first time he entered the grand old wizarding school. Passing through the restaurant’s revolving doors, you find yourself in a low-lit realm of old-time elegance and romance. Waiters glide around the floor to the sound of clinking silverware, delivering all manner of enticing cocktails to a stylish

clientele. It feels, quite simply, like the place to be; a feeling only furthered by sampling one of those cocktails yourself. I choose a lip-smacking 1873, charged with CO2. And why not? A drink full of atmosphere seems the right way to go in a restaurant positively laden with the stuff. Move into the dining room and the magic heightens. It’s like eating in a plush Belle Epoque dining-car, except with magnificent ceilingheight windows and more space than any railroad carriage could ever provide. My head is filled with fantasies of trans-continental rail trips during the Golden Age of steam, and I begin to wonder if a peek out of one of those windows would reveal a first, aweinspiring glimpse of old Rome or St Petersburg.

Meanwhile, back in reality, the very charming head waiter informs us that the restaurant, opened just a few months ago. As part of the wider King’s Cross redevelopment project, it has gotten off to a great start, growing more popular every day. It’s intriguing to wonder how its role will develop within King’s Cross increasingly gentrified dining scene – on first impressions, it seems entirely possible the Gilbert Scott will lead the pack. Elite yet openminded, it oozes class while wearing its self-imposed standards lightly. With this restaurant, chef (and founder of the Berkeley in Knightsbridge) Marcus Wareing set out to create something like the simple brasseries around the Gare du Nord in Paris – and he and his team have definitely achieved that Gallic melange of informal atmosphere and

aesthetic eloquence. In this they’ve had no small amount of assistance from the magnificent building that houses the establishment, and whose original architect, George Gilbert Scott, provides its name. But ultimately, the Gilbert Scott couldn’t help but become a bigger deal than a regular Paris eaterie. For one thing, its opening garnered a ton of press; for another, it’s in London, where brasserie dining remains an exciting novelty. And then there’s the food. The menu is brawny, as befits the oldtime style of the establishment – dishes like pork neck and bone marrow toast will whet the appetite of many adventurous omnivores. Then there are ‘soles in coffins’, Beeton’s barbecue chicken and a delightful dessert menu that includes Mrs Beeton’s snow eggs

(Everton toffee, peanuts and burnt honey custard) and Eccles cake with cheddar cheese ice cream. Anyone with a sweet tooth is going to think they’ve died and gone to a particularly stylish heaven. My companion and I certainly viewed this bonanza with gimlet eyes, eventually plumping for field mushroom soup (as good as any soup I’ve had in a fine-dining restaurant) accompanied by a lovely Riesling, and a delicious smoked duck salad with quince, mozzarella and walnuts accompanied by a glass of velvety Vouvray. The starters set the bar high, but the mains vaulted it with ease. We enjoyed the aforementioned leek crumble with salsify and a glass of Torrontes, and calf’s liver with bacon, caramelised onion mash and spring onions alongside a glass of Malbec.

To finish, I had a fantastically indulgent gingerbread pudding with pear ice cream and caramel while (after a spot of understandable dithering, being so spoilt for choice) my companion ordered the lemon cream ice – its salted popcorn and lemon caramel topping finally clinching the deal. It was a suitably storybook ending to an evening that proved that sophisticated doesn’t have to mean staid and that fun isn’t just for kids. At Marcus Wareing’s Gilbert Scott, attention to detail and a flair for romance have conjured that rare thing: a restaurant experience that’s grown-up, imaginative and more than a little magical. thegilbertscott.co.uk, St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Euston Road, King’s Cross, NW1 2AR, 020 7278 3888 41

he Shop is a community cocktail bar. Its short life has already seen it play host to cupcake workshops, vintage sales, art exhibitions and a range of random happenings in a space that’s designed to evolve with its folk. It’s even been the subject of a rave in the Telegraph and uniquely, everything in it is for sale. Like the pictures on the walls? They could be yours. Fancy the chairs? Make an offer. Cocktails, served in recycled jamjars and milk bottles, include the Shop Assistant (tequila, lime, honey, raspberries, lager), Once Loved (rum, coco, pineapple and creme de abricot) and the purist Size Zero (prosecco, peach puree) while snacks include scotch eggs and pork pies. Owners Luke Allen and Ben Magid launched the venue in response to a lack of cocktails in Kensal Rise and the place has a happy, easy vibe with a creative edge.

THE HOUSE RESTAURANT REVIEW

Katie Randall ventures to The House for food and service that is a cut above the rest

I

wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a gastropub that confesses to a slightly rough past with managers being locked in the cellar on a regular basis - and yet nestled off Essex Road, Islington, The House is just such a place. I can say with full conviction that its future will be decidedly brighter. London’s N1 is already renowned as a mecca for foodies, with a diverse selection of restaurants packed into the area. Being tucked away from the crowds of Upper Street works in this restaurant’s favour. It manages to tick all the boxes - local gem for the residents and destination eatery for diners who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the High Street. While the general manager, Blair Sinclair, admits that the venue used to be ‘a bit rough’, he speaks beamingly of its current owner, Barnaby Meredith who took the place on in 2001. The House is now tastefully decorated with wooden flooring, inviting brown leather sofas, red brick fireplaces and lots of natural light. They also offer a modest but delectable cocktail menu. Great attention to detail has

clearly been dedicated to all aspects of The House, but it is in their menu and homemade food that all that love becomes apparent. This establishment offers fine dining in a relaxed environment. Blair explained that for whatever reason many people don’t expect the food to be as good as it is. He added that once you’ve eaten in the restaurant once - you’re hooked.

We ordered a bottle of red, a 2009 La Cadence and drank in the atmosphere. Homemade and herby gnocchi in a wild mushroom sauce with parmasan crisps danced on the palette, and my dinner partner ensured me that the wood pigeon with celeriac purée and a juniper jus sang. The House have recently unveiled a

brand new menu of traditional stone baked pizzas with fresh classic ingredients. I heartily recommend The Mediterranean, on which the stars of the show are oven roasted peppers, courgette, aubergine, pesto sauce and rocket salad. If you can make room for dessert, I recommend you do. The vanilla and pomegranate cheesecake was the best I’ve ever had. The cheese mousse was light while still delivering a hit of creamy goodness. As an added bonus, a pomegranate seed filling exploded in your mouth with every bite, adding another interesting texture. Barnaby Meredith has worked with the best foodies in the culinary canon - and you can tell. After training as a chef for a year at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quat Saison and working in management with Marco Pierre White at Quo Vadis - he is bringing a little slice of culinary excellence to Islington. 63 – 69 Canonbury Road Islington N1 2DG 020 7704 7410 thehouseislington.com

London has lots of kosher restaurants but there’s nowhere dedicated to British-style food and Beilin and her team are about to change that. Approved by resident Rabbi Moshe Dadoun, a prominent member of the Porat Yosef Synagogue, and using ingredients from kosher butchers and shops, the mission is to bring this exciting new experience, tasty roast beef and all the trimmings to the masses. With support, the Kosher Roast team want to produce similar successful events in the future. PAUL STEVENSON Reef One produce the beautifully designed and efficient biOrb range of aquariums. We chat with MD Paul Stevenson on the brand that has sold over a million aquariums worldwide How did you come up with the concept of the biOrb? Before biOrb, aquariums were just sheets of glass stuck together with silicone sealer. They were about as inspiring as a shower cubicle. There was no reason why an aquarium couldn’t be engineered in the same way any other quality household product is engineered. It’s just that nobody had. So we did. What are the benefits of the biOrb filter? How does this make them different to alternative aquariums? All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom. It’s where solid waste naturally settles. Put simply, fish waste sinks and our filter works where there is most to filter. You’d be surprised how many home aquariums have a filter stuck to the side of the tank or even at the top. To make an analogy, it’s similar to vacuuming your walls or ceiling to remove the debris from the floor. We have even made the filter easy to change. It takes seconds to do and you only need to do it every four to six weeks. We use acrylic

instead of glass which is 10 times stronger than glass and if you want to know why that’s important, just ask anyone who’s broken a glass aquarium and flooded their home! Besides strength, it’s also noticeably clearer - that’s why it’s used for aircraft and nautical windows. Acrylic has a transparency rate of 93% making it the clearest material known. Glass only allows 70% of light to pass

We’ve engineered the biOrb to be easier to use. We insist upon the highest standard of fish welfare, so we asked the highest authority we could find – the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hannover. They did an independent test of a biOrb against a standard rectangular aquarium and this is what they told us, word for word. “The oxygen concentrations in the biOrb aquarium were higher than in the rectangular aquarium - probably due to the vigorous aeration and turbulence. This keeps the gases in equilibrium with the air above the water surface.” How do you see the styles and technology of your products evolving in the future? We’re working on new designs all the time. 1 1. WINTER WONDERLAND

The textures of the white leather chair and the deep pile rug add their own Winter resonance to the Scandinavian references in this room, suggesting rolling hills blanketed with snow and the frosted tips of grasses.

When you decorate your house for the festive season this year, why not add a distinctly Scandinavian flavour, suggests interior designer Gail Abbott

I

n Scandinavia, the winter landscape is evoked throughout the house at Christmas, with white linen, plenty of candles and natural decorations of foliage and silver birch logs. This is a special time of year that begs for a touch of extravagance, and Christmas and New Year’s Eve are marked by family and friends getting together to eat and celebrate. Use the colours of a winter landscape, with its snow-covered forests and frozen lakes, to make rooms for entertaining look really festive. In the clean, uncluttered lines of a contemporary room, celebratory elements introduced at Christmas

need to be bold, with shapes strong enough to hold their own in a minimal space. For a more traditional setting, a white table decorated with silver baubles, glass containers and a few branches of greenery makes an enchantingly understated setting. Christmas isn’t Christmas without candles, and tall dinner examples in silvered candlesticks give a shimmering height to the centre of the table, while a set of tea lights in votive glasses introduce light at a lower level. Use scented candles in glass tumblers on the mantelpiece to add an evocative aroma of cinnamon or pine throughout the holidays.

2. INSTANT TABLECENTRES

Giving the table an extra touch of sparkle, a glass bowl of silvery baubles reflect points of candlelight all round. It’s a decoration that takes only moments to assemble, but one which immediately gives a Christmas flavour to the table. 55

A hand-carved ibex head, brought back from a trip to Africa, looks spectacular against a darkly-painted wall. With its dramatic white horns it has an affinity with the snowy wastes and reindeer herds of the north.

3. GLASS VOTIVES

An array of tea lights in glass jars are set on the table in a Swedish dining room. When the table is laid for dinner, each place setting will have its own small light. Use a collection of small, wirewrapped, jam jars as an alternative.

5. RETRO STYLE

A pair of vintage sundae dishes, lit from within by tea lights, show off the texture of the glass and make great way to turn favourite junk shop finds into Christmas decorations.

A French linen sheet makes the perfect start to dressing a long table a celebratory meal. In the centre, instead of a formal table centre, a handful of eucalyptus leaves make an understated touch of foliage with a distinctly Swedish flavour

If you fancy getting away from the often over-crowded ski slopes, why not take a few days out to visit Beaune, the pretty wine capital of Burgundy. With cobbled streets, unique architecture and boutique shops, it’s a charming jewel in the midst of medieval countryside. Situated in the famous Portes Du Soleil ski area, Châtel is a picture-perfect little village and winter sports enthusiasts’ paradise. Beautiful, unspoiled countryside and quaint wooden chalets all add to its picture-postcard charm. The scenic Lake Geneva is one of the largest lakes in Western Europe and stretches across France and Switzerland. Home to many a celebrity hideaway, December is a great time to visit with a multitude of Christmas events taking place, including the Festival of Lights featuring live reindeer. Chamonix in the Mont Blanc Valley - the heart of the French alps - is one of the World’s best and most famous destinations for skiing and mountain sports. Cocktails: The Cocktail Bar at Dukes is world famous, and rightly so. Here, amid low lighting and the gentle buzz of conversation, you can enjoy a tipple of James Bond’s invention (the Vesper Martini) as you drink at the bar once frequented by the secret agent’s creator, Ian Fleming. The service is exceptional, the wines superb and the cocktails out of this world: whether you’re looking for a spot for up-market office drinks, or somewhere for a quiet Christmas tipple with friends, Dukes Bar fits the bill. Cocktails hover around the £15 mark, but they’re worth every penny!

Christmas Sparkle Deal: For those of you with office parties in town, there can be few better crash pads than Dukes. Or if you and you partner want more than just an overnight stay, the Christmas Sparkle deal will get you get a room, a big breakfast, a half hour beauty treatment each, two Martinis in the bar and a three course meal for two at the hotel’s acclaimed new restaurant, Thirty Six, for £350. hristmas: season of joy and goodwill to all men. We’re all for it, of course, but sometimes the stress of a jam-packed December and the dreaded Christmas shopping, is enough to send even the most saintly among us running for cover. But if you think you need a holiday from the holiday period, Dukes Hotel provides an easy and enjoyable antidote. I checked in with the aim of escaping the Christmas madness without undoing my feelings of festive anticipation. Unlike the Grinch, I didn’t want to destroy Christmas – just ease the pace a little; every year it flashes past before I’ve had a chance to get into the proper spirit. I hoped that the five-star luxury and storybook setting of Dukes would get me off to a good start, and help me to savour the season ahead.

Shopper’s Delight: First and foremost, Dukes provides the perfect respite from the frantic pace and pushy crowds of the typical Christmas shopping trip. What better way to relax after a retail rampage than by retiring to this quiet courtyard in St James, mere minutes from Regent Street but a world away from all the hubbub. The hotel’s centuries-old exterior twinkles with fairy lights; inside, its soothing blend of traditional English elegance and understated contemporary style offer a peaceful haven to the weary shopper – and there’s always the choice of afternoon tea in the tranquil drawing room (£35 including a glass of champagne; I can vouch for the perfection of the freshly baked scones) or a 30 minute massage in the Health Club to buck up your spirits. 65

George Ramsay interviews Christopher Green and Ursula Martinez to find out more about the Pleasance Theatre production that’s causing a stir...

W

elcome to Office Party, a quirky-cool and exciting new production written and directed by Christopher Green and Ursula Martinez. It comes highly recommended for those suffering the corporate blues this winter. Office life has never been so exciting and if you’ve ever considered telling your boss what you truly think or flirting with the colleague you’ve never had the courage to face, look no further, this production will make your day - and more importantly, keep you in employment. So what is Office Party? C: A theatre show and a piece of experimental performance. U: It’ s a very simple concept; a fictitious company is holding an

office party and the audience are the employees. It’s an experimental holding form, if you like, but actually what’s delivered within the piece is very accessible. C: We’ve experimented in a lot of our work historically, so it’s an approach we take. But in some ways this is the purest form we’ve done. There are no seats and the setting is the reality. There is one very simple idea and that is everyone is part of this party and then everything flows from there. Audience participation sounds a little scary? C: Of course people are worried. There are lots of immersive theatre shows and it’s very popular now, but it’s still a new thing and people aren’t used to doing it. What they

The Cast of OFFICE PARTY

are familiar with is going to stuff where you’re dragged up on stage at a nightclub and end up doing a wet t-shirt competition. Perhaps people think it’s like that, but our production is very straightforward. U: Audience members interact with each other too. It’s not a theatre piece where you have to stay in your seat. There are no seats which is hard to convey on a leaflet. You can’t say, well, ‘it’s a basic premise, a fictitious office and a corporate party…’ C: The important thing is that you only join in as much as you want. Why choose an office party to express your ideas? U: I think ideas come organically and there is no, ‘ahh, we want to explore the subject of office parties, how can 67

we do that?’ That’s not how it works; you have an idea, for whatever reason and then you choose to explore it. C: Well, the office party is traditionally the night where all the normal rules are reversed. It’s perfect really, because it’s saying, ‘we know you’re inhibited but this is the night you can become uninhibited’. It’s a very understandable set of circumstances that anyone can pick up on. They know the CEO has the power; that the cleaner doesn’t. You don’t need to explain that.

idea that this show can only be enjoyed drunk. People do drink, though.

Do people drink alcohol at the show? U (laughing): It’s a show that perhaps alerts people to the dangers of alcohol. ‘Oh no! What did I say last night?’ C: We offer them a drink and yes it is available, but I absolutely refute the

There are seven rooms and fourteen actors in your production - that’s ambitious? U: You won’t see them all. C: The seven rooms and fourteen actors is, very slightly, a red herring. Not a major one because it’s true, but it’s said so people have an expectation that they’ll be going on a journey. We kind of did it deliberately to give people something to hold onto.

a large cast. We do a lot of solo work, but to work with an ensemble takes it to a larger world, which is exciting. C: It has been a real pleasure. What is it about this production that affects you at a personal level? U (grinning): Expressing individuality, collectively. C: For me, it comes back to the humanity of it and celebrating each person as an individual. The value of being a small cog in a large machine. We should celebrate the individual and the collective and that’s what the ending is trying to do. FELICITY J LORD OFFERS NEW TENANTS ‘ZERO RENT’ PERIOD OVER CHRISTMAS Felicity J Lord is giving prospective tenants in London the chance to stay rent-free for two weeks over Christmas. The lettings agent, which has branches throughout the capital, is offering new tenants the opportunity to save £100s simply by letting any of the selected properties featured in its ‘zero rent event’ before December 23. Taking advantage of the ‘zero rent event’ when it goes live on November 21, couldn’t be easier. All a tenant needs to do is simply register with their local branch between November 21 – November 27. If they then subsequently rent one of the selected properties before December 23, they will get the first two weeks rent free. Explains Mariella Petralia, Divisional Lettings Director for Felicity J Lord: “This is a fantastic opportunity for prospective tenants to save £100s in the run up to Christmas. I would urge anyone though who is thinking of renting to contact Felicity J Lord as soon as possible as we are expecting the ‘zero rent event’ to prove extremely popular.”

PROPERTY ADVICE

LEGAL ANDREW FLINT FROM COLMAN COYLE, GIVES HIS EXPERT ADVICE ON ALL YOUR LEGAL PROPERTY QUESTIONS I have recently put an offer in to buy a property and the seller has asked me if he can have my deposit on exchange. I am not quite sure what he means by this. On exchange of contracts a deposit will be paid by you as the buyer to the seller. This payment will be made through your solicitor and is usually 10% of the purchase price. Once exchange of contracts takes place, the deposit will be sent with your signed contract to the seller’s solicitors. The seller’s solicitors will usually hold this deposit until completion takes place as a ‘stakeholder’. If your seller is buying a property himself, the deposit can be used to fund his purchase deposit and it can ultimately pass all the way to the top of the chain, where it will be held as a stakeholder by a solicitor. If the deposit were to be released to your seller on exchange, the risk to you is that in the unlikely event of the seller failing to complete and you becoming entitled to have the deposit returned to you, it might be difficult to claim this back if the seller has spent the money. This would involve taking the seller to court and I am sure that this is something you would rather avoid. If the deposit is held by his solicitor as a stakeholder your deposit is ring-fenced and for that reason my advice is not to allow the seller to use your deposit and insist that his solicitor holds it as a stakeholder.

MARKET INSIGHT Marji Adeyinka from M&M Property answers the key property questions for the Newington Green area

How have the last six months of 2011 been for you? We have seen a good deal of activity. Enquiries for properties to rent during the months of August and September were exceptionally higher than what we have experienced in quite a while. How long have you been based in Newington Green; what makes this area so special within London? M & M Property have been in Newington Green, Islington for some 18 years now. Newington Green is a fascinating residential area with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, bars and of course property. The area has seen a gradual influx of both tenants and homeowners drawn to the charm and history of the area, with its good selection of property styles, types and sizes, including what is thought to be the oldest row of terraced houses in England. What’s the typical property you have on your books at present? A two bedroom converted flat located within one of the many Victorian terraced houses, characteristic of Newington Green. These flats tend to be much sought after by young professionals for their high ceilings, large sash windows, feature fireplaces and easy access into town. With Mortgage lenders starting to offer better deals to first-time buyers, what affect will this have in the current market? We hope this will create a positive effect. The hefty deposits required by lending institutions have led to an increase in the number of would-be first-time buyers turning to or remaining in the rental sector, contributing to a shortage of rental stock. With mortgages becoming

your property, choose an agent that has experience in your area and of your particular type of property. Be realistic about price - an over-priced property will limit the number of viewings you achieve leaving your property stagnating on the market.

more accessible, more people will have the opportunity to purchase their first home. With the Rental market being so strong how do you see the next 12 months? And what advice do you have for those looking to rent ? The general consensus is that rents will continue at current levels with increases anticipated in 2012. If you plan to rent a property in the next 12 months, allow ample time to search. If your budget is tight, you may wish to consider renting with friends. On the other hand, now is a good time for Landlords to invest in properties for Let. To attract the best rents and tenants, invest in the property from day one. We offer free advice to landlords looking for rental investments and strongly advise that you engage the services of a professional agency. With buyers outstripping demand for properties at the moment what advice do you have for buyers and sellers? Keep in touch with a few agents. Most agents will send automatic email alerts when a new property comes onto the market. When selling

Are you optimistic for the year ahead? Yes, very much so. We choose to ignore most of the negative talk and focus on the fact that people still need a roof over their heads. Islington is an area that has managed to buck the trend when it comes to house prices and there is still a good amount of activity going on in the market. Our plans over the next few months are focused on improving the experience of our clients and continuing to deliver a service that is both personal and professional. In an area with so many Estate Agents what makes your agency different? We are located on Newington Green Road, which sits at the end of Essex Road and St. Pauls Road. This gives us the advantage of being one of just a couple of Estate agents within the locality of Newington Green. We have been in the area for 18 years and know the area intimately. As an independent agency we are able to offer an individualised personal service which may explain why we have clients who have remained with us since the year we started trading.

AGENT OFFER M & M Property have a Christmas offering of a 15% discount on all new property instructions given in the month of December 2011. For further information, please call us on 020 7704 0664 109

If you want to let out your property how much rent should you ask? Setting the right price to let your property out is something of a minefield. Estate agents always talk up rents and most other “advisers” have some kind of vested interest either way.

At Benham & Reeves Lettings all we do is lettings. We are London’s oldest and biggest lettings-only agency. We rent more properties to more people in the better parts of town than anyone else. We can tell you (for FREE) exactly what you should get for your property. And we can tell you how you can increase that too. And we offer this service for free. There’s a catch of course, we want your business, but we’re not pushy and it doesn’t help us in the long-term if we are anything other than accurate. So, if you are considering letting out a property call in to see our lettings team at 107 Fleet Street, for an informal chat.

URGENT CALL Properties needed to rent in Islington, City and Canary Wharf. We are currently swamped with tenants looking for properties in these three areas.
