WHAT’S ON PIONEERS OF THE DOWNTOWN SCENE, NEW YORK 1970s RUNNING UNTIL 22 MAY 2011

Performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson, choreographer Trisha Brown and artist Gordon Matta-Clark were friends and active participants in the New York art community, working fluidly between visual art and performance. With the city as their backdrop, canvas, stage and inspiration, this exhibition is the first major presentation to examine the experimental and often daring approaches taken by these three key figures, both individually and collectively, in the burgeoning arts scene in downtown New York during the 1970s. Artists responded to New York’s bankruptcy at the time by taking over derelict spaces to make and exhibit their work, using the city itself as the medium or setting for their work, by creating opportunities to engage directly with the public out of doors and by building a vibrant arts community.

CHEAP LIGHTING IS A BRIGHT IDEA

Until the end of March, businesses in Archway had the opportunity to slash their electricity bills and energy use with a cut-price lighting offer. The process of replacing old lighting tubes with new ones has cut energy bills by up to 40% - if a business replaced 40 tubes, they could save £300 on electricity. The first lights were put in place during February at local firms Absolute Print and Metro Food & wine. Hak Huseyin, of Absolute Print: “Having installed the lights, I am delighted, as this was part of our three-year CO2 reduction plan to change our existing lighting to the T5 energy efficient lighting. “This will have a real impact on our personal goal of 30 per cent carbon reduction as well helping Archway Low Carbon Zone achieve its goal. Of course the added bonus of reducing our lighting bill by 50 per cent is brilliant!” Cllr Paul Smith, Islington Council’s executive member for environment, said: “We’re on the side of local businesses in tough times and are delighted to help them save money on electricity bills.

GREEN LIGHT FOR ‘RESIDENT ROAMER’ SCHEME

TOWN HALL PERFECT FOR WEDDINGS Islington Council’s Town Hall on Upper Street is the perfect place to tie the knot locally. The 1920’s listed building offers the choice of three ceremony rooms; Council Chamber, Room 99 and Mayor’s Parlour. The Council Chamber is the most impressive, with room to sit up to 100 guests while Room 99 and the Mayor’s Parlour are better suited to smaller, intimate weddings. On average the Town Hall holds around 800 weddings, civil ceremonies and vow renewals a year. Most recently Islington Council have produced a brochure entitled “I Do” to help make the planning of the ceremony in Islington or the city as stress-free as possible. The brochure explores everything that needs to be

done, pre-wedding and during the ceremony itself - from giving notice to the registrars to thinking about the vows and readings. The brochure also lists all other approved venues in Islington and the City licensed for marriages and civil partnerships, many of which are steeped in tradition and history. Newly weds Peter Chan and Lesley Smith, were married on February 14 in the Council Chamber surrounded by family and friends; Lesley said. “I travel past the Town Hall on the bus all the time and have always thought it’s a lovely building and would be a nice place to get married.” Copies of the “I Do” brochure can be picked up from the Town Hall’s registry office.

Islington Council have given the final approval to the new scheme ‘resident roamer’, which gives local residents more freedom to park locally. The scheme began on February 29 allowing resident permit holders to park in any resident parking bays between 11am - 3pm Monday to Saturday. It means that local drivers will be able to visit family, shops and other services like the dentist and doctor. The scheme is part of a set of improvements to the boroughs parking system. Cllr Paul Smith, Islington Council’s Executive Member for Enviroment said: “We’re on our residents’ side and our roamer scheme will be of great benefit for people who want to make short local visits.” “Most people who phoned the council after we wrote to residents about roamer permits have been supportive. We will of course monitor the scheme and make sure it works well.”

THE APPRENTICE Local resident Paloma Vivanco speaks out about her time on the hit BBC show - and proves she’s much more than an Apprentice…

he thing about Paloma Vivanco is that she’s actually really nice. Like, really. I don’t know quite what I expected - far be it from me to make judgments about someone’s real character from their television persona. They may call The Apprentice a reality show, but I’m not quite so naïve as to believe that what it portrays is the unedited truth. But the uncomfortable fact remains that, however wise and cautious we try to be in our appraisals, it’s hard not to be at least slightly influenced by the representation of a person we see on screen. And as one of the most talked-about stars in the show’s most recent (sixth) series, Paloma Vivanco has drawn her share of flak in the press and online. Still, I didn’t approach our interview with the same trepidation I might have if it were a Big Brother contestant or washed-up celebrity awaiting me. I mean, appearing on The Apprentice marks her out as a reality TV star of a higher calibre - or at least, a reality TV star of a higher calibre show - doesn’t it? At the very least, I thought, this girl’s got to have a head for business? And I was right: she is, and she does. One of the most well-known (not to mention attractive) faces of the entire Apprentice run so far, Paloma hit our screens in the sixth and latest series. She comes from a corporate background and it shows: she’s fastidious, even in interview, reconfirming my questions before she formulates an answer. She auditioned, she says, after seeing the fifth series and feeling inspired. She tells me she wanted to capitalise on her ‘entrepreneurial flair’ and put her raw business skills to the test. She points out that excelling in a corporate environment and exhibiting entrepeneurial know-how are two

different things, and adds that she wanted to see if business start-ups were her forte. But she didn’t think anything would come of her application and was surprised when, lounging on the beach on holiday, she got the call inviting her for a first interview. “It was surreal,” she recalls. “How many thousands of people must get called up? I just remember thinking: I bet there is a really long interview process.” The interview itself was not particularly notable; Paloma tells me how she joined a massive queue, akin to the type you see outside X-Factor auditions - but rather than swarms of tweenagers and the occasional hopeful granny, this one comprised suited and booted professionals who, she adds, all seemed rather unfriendly and competitive behind their polish. Paloma describes her initial pitch as being rather impromptu, noting

that she felt slightly intimidated by the highly qualified professors, investment bankers and surgeons who rattled off great speeches on their opening gambit. So she threw her prepared script out the window and simply told her life story so far, incorporating her travelling tales and previous involvement in business. The gamble worked. After a demanding set of six further interviews, Paloma was finally offered the chance to become a contestant on the show. In retrospect, she attributes her exotic cultural heritage as one reason why the producers were so interested in her born and raised in Peru, she’s also lived in New Zealand and the United States. I ask Paloma what she learned during her time on The Apprentice. She hesitates before plunging in with some insightful observations about the experience. 13

INTERVIEW “You’re removed from reality, without access to phones, TV or internet, much like contestants in the Big Brother house, and you lose a little perspective and objectivity. The environment nurtures competitive behaviours. One thing I think I’ve learned is how to deal with peoples’ differing levels of expertise.” Having been immersed in the corporate world she’d naturally become adept at dealing with corporate people with the relevant experience, but in the Apprentice household she was exposed to more varying backgrounds, ages and skill-sets. “I was using the language of corporate business because that’s what I was used to, but I’ve learned to tailor my approach now.” What I also want to know is how useful the tasks set on the show can be in highlighting real business talent? Is this component largely written with the entertainment of viewers in mind? Paloma’s answer is diplomatic. “It is difficult to take the show too seriously in a business context: you’re always aware that what you’re doing is being standardised for TV format, that the producers are looking for TV moments, but the tasks themselves are really good for encouraging quickthinking. It is useful to brainstorm in that way and have an intellectual property lawyer sitting beside you to advise whether an idea is feasible.” She admits that the fact that the show is televised adds an extra dimension of unrealistic pressure. “You want to be the one to come up with that genius idea; you’re vulnerable to your colleagues stealing the limelight.” As we talk, I’m more and more convinced that this is a woman with a good head on her shoulders, one whose opinions and observations are worth hearing. With that in mind I want to find out what she really thinks of Apprentice kingpin Lord Alan Sugar. She laughs before responding ‘Whoah!’ She goes on to explain that she can’t disclose too much. “What can I say? He has tremendous presence. He has these piercing eyes – it’s like he looks through you to try and work you out…which is unnerving! He doesn’t have a lot of time so the only time you get to engage with

him is in the boardroom. I’d have liked to have got to know him a little better because I’m not sure that the small bursts we had with him were reflective of his true character. He’s definitely a mover and a shaker though.” I also want to know what she has to say about the negative comments that accrued about her following her ‘firing’ from the show. Certain sections of the media dubbed her ‘lippy’, ‘outspoken’ and ‘bitchy’, but far from feeling sensitive or defensive, that good head of hers helps her to stay balanced. “At the end of the day, it was a TV show. For me personally, it might have been nicer if they’d captured a more rounded perspective. They did seem to

to me [than a man]… in that sense we still have a long way to go.” We go on to discuss if women have to compromise friends and family to make it in business, and Paloma admits that her gender is a consideration. “The older I get and the more I achieve, unfortunately at the back of mind, [the greater] the niggling worry of how I will manage with children when I do eventually have them. It is a shame we women have to think about it; it would be good if working environments embraced maternity and flexibility increased.” One way that a lot of women are tackling the problem is through running their own businesses. Fittingly, Paloma has just launched a fine fibre knitwear company - Inacia. Building on her cultural roots by using Peruvian alpaca wool to create a range of high-quality everyday wear, I wonder in retrospect if Paloma is already preparing for the eventuality of motherhood. We’ll have to wait and see. Right now, she has her hands full with her business and various charitable commitments: I spoke to her a day after she completed an assault course with her fellow Apprentice candidates in support of March’s Comic Relief TV special. Inacia is run locally and Paloma loves living in the capital; in fact, having lived in several countries around the world, she feels that North London is home and is determined to settle here. “Angel was my first stop in London. It actually reminds me of a suburb called Ponsonby back in New Zealand, because of the restaurant, bar and shopping culture.” Paloma would love to stock her knitwear range locally too, and is currently talking to shops in the area. “Islington has a personality of its own, in part because of the independent businesses that give it that feel. It has a dependable footfall, but without the tackiness of, say, Oxford Circus. It’d be a real shame if the high street chains take over.” I agree wholeheartedly, and hope that we’ll be seeing Paloma’s knitwear range in local shops in the near future. I for one wouldn’t doubt it. 

St Paul’s Cathedral Eloise Baumann takes a look at the capital’s iconic monument and contender for the Royal Wedding venue…

uch is the appeal of the royal wedding as a national event that, when news of Prince William’s engagement to Kate Middleton reached the hungry ears of the British public (who, like a maiden aunt, had been watching and waiting for such a development for several years), we had the requisite questions already to hand. It was as if the proposal had taken place in our own families. How did William propose? Who would design Kate’s dress? Which statesmen and world leaders would be invited to the ceremony - and which snubbed? And, perhaps most important of all: where would the marriage service be held? In the end, there were only two serious contenders for this last honour. Of London’s three cathedrals, poor Southwark was never even in the game. The battle was between the parliamentary prestige of Westminster Abbey and the City icon St. Paul’s. And although in the end the former won out, it was not to the latter’s discredit. For a few weeks, people the length and breadth of the country had paused to recall the

famous domed silhouette that dominates and defines the City of London’s historic skyline, and to wonder whether it might not play host to these most talked-about of nuptials. The happy couple may have plumped for Westminster instead, but St. Paul’s enjoyed a well-deserved return to the forefront of the national imagination. And yet, taking a closer look at the history of the building, it’s hard to believe that it had ever really gone away. Perched atop Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, St. Paul’s has been a central London landmark - in one form or another - since around AD604. Or at least, that’s one theory. The early historian Geoffrey of Monmouth argued that a pagan temple to the goddess Diana (the Roman counterpart of the Ancient Greeks’ Artemis, huntress goddess of the moon) existed on the site of what would later become a church dedicated to the Christian apostle, Saint Paul. The story has persisted, but later works on the site - our St. Paul’s is believed to be the sixth holy building to have stood upon the site - have uncovered no evidence to support the theory.

What is generally agreed is that the earliest Saxon chapel to have stood upon the site was built around AD886 and destroyed by fire around AD962. A third cathedral was begun the same year and survived until 1087, when a blaze once again ravaged the predominantly wooden structure. The country’s new Norman rulers soon began construction on a fourth St. Paul’s, but their scheme was somewhat more grandiose than those of their predecessors - the new building would take 200 years to complete, the process hampered by both fire and occasional changes of plan. By the time it was finished, it was one of the architectural marvels of its age - though the famous dome we know today was yet to come. Old St. Paul’s (as the fourth church came to be known to later historians) instead boasted a 489 foot wooden spire that would tower over the burgeoning city’s skyline until 1561, when it was destroyed by lightning. Worse had already befallen Old St. Paul’s, however: during the reign of Henry VIII, the unhappy king had dissolved the monasteries and

severed England’s ties with the Catholic Church. St. Paul’s was a bastion of the suddenly outdated Catholic faith, and as a result much of it was stripped down or destroyed. The building had already been in a state of advanced age and decay, but when the famous spire was eventually razed by lightning, the event was still significant enough for both Protestants and Catholics to claim it as evidence of God’s displeasure with those of opposing faith. abate yet, however. Oliver Cromwell’s parliamentarian revolutionaries defaced the building during their time in power in the early 1600s, and in 1666 the Great Fire of London gutted the building almost completely. A choice presented itself: rebuild in the old style, remaking Old St. Paul’s as it had been before the inferno, or else start work on a new structure entirely - one more modern in style. The decision was taken, and the latter option favoured. Enter Sir Christopher Wren. Wren had been tasked with working on improvements to the church before the Great Fire even occurred, but after the catastrophe, in 1675, the most famous British architect of the age was given carte blanche to design his own St. Paul’s from scratch. His cathedral, built in Portland stone in the monumental, sober style of the English baroque, was to become a masterpiece of structural engineering - with its colossal dome rising some 365 feet above the London streets below - as well as one of the most recognisable landmarks in the world. The dome actually consists of

three domes - an outer shell, an inner one to make for interior symmetry and a middle dome to support the other two. Wren’s cathedral cost over £1 million (around £150 million in today’s money) and took 36 years to build, and opinion on it at the time of its completion in 1711 was divided. Some saw a unique and fitting monument, others saw too many traces of ‘popery’ for their liking - perhaps inevitable, when the dome and many of the building’s structural adornments were inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Whatever the view at the time, the building became a truly iconic symbol of the city in which it stood, and over the three and a half centuries that followed has become a much-loved thread in the capital’s architectural fabric. Stories abound relating to its history and architectural significance - most famously the (true) tale of the famed Whispering Gallery, which sits 99 feet above the cathedral floor, just below the interior dome. A whisper or any low sound made at any point on the inner wall of the dome is audible to a listener with their ear beside any other point on the dome - a neat physical feature that still delights visitors to this day. Of course, the cathedral still had to survive the ravages of life in one of the

world’s major cities, even in the modern era. The most trying time was perhaps during the Second World War, when German bombers actively targeted St. Paul’s. Struck by bombs on multiple occasions, the cathedral and its legendary dome survived - not least thanks to the instructions of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who ordered firefighters to protect the cathedral above all other local buildings, because of its singular status as a symbol of British nationhood and heritage - and a signifier of indomitable British morale. This privileged place in the character and affections of the nation is due at least in part to the characters and achievements of the figures interred at or memorialised in St. Paul’s, among them Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, Churchill and the Order of the British Empire. But of course, it’s not all bombings and burials, and as recently as 1981, St. Paul’s - always a busy working church - was back at the centre of public affairs and the popular imagination when it served as the venue for the wedding of His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales and his young bride, Lady Diana Spencer. But perhaps the sixth St. Paul’s most fitting office is as the resting place of the man behind its conception, construction and iconic status: Sir Christopher Wren. He, too, is interred within the cathedral (in fact he was the first to be laid to rest there). His epitaph? “Lector, si monumentum requiris, circumspice.” It means, simply and fittingly: “Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you.” Do so, and the scale and enduring nature of his achievement cannot be in any doubt. ■ 17

t’s one of those things which is almost as daunting as it is exhilarating. After a long drive through the Chinese countryside, a very long game of ‘who will see it first’, and more than one false alarm, it’s here. Initially, it’s not the looming wonder we expect it to be (more a smattering of history on the green hills around us). But as we draw closer to the start of our 8km trek, the wall starts to take shape, and it’s the thing of our childhood daydreams. No, we can’t see it from the moon, but why would you need to? Thousands of Mongol warriors scream in the throes of battle; the sound of horse hooves on stone is deafening; arrows fall like a black swarm from the sky. Not today, of course, but the Great Wall of China evokes such vivid images that it’s easy to picture, when you’re standing gazing at that winding mass of thousands of years of toil, death, warfare and glory, that you are a part of the Qin empire. The trek is hard (this is the only original part of the Great Wall in Beijing province that you can walk on), the stairs are steep, the wind is cold, and you’d better hold on tight when crossing those crumbling parapets because it’s a long way down. But when you’re one of only seven people for miles around, the sun is shining on your wind blown face, you make it up to the top of the final and steepest staircase, you can collapse with the most amazing view in the world. As the autumn sun begins to set, the light falling golden on the copper leaves on the ground, you realise that you’ll probably never see this again. After this, it’s back to the slightly subdued mayhem of Beijing, with its street scorpions, incredible acrobatics, and Chairman Mao watches. But for now, you take a breath of clear, crisp air and are thankful to have experienced this centuries old piece of architecture for yourself. Are there benefits to ‘high tec’ running shoes and am I at risk of damaging my feet and ankles by running in my old trainers? I’m about to run the marathon for the first ever time. I’m a 50 year old female and slightly overweight. I’m worried about damaging my knees and my friends are suggesting I see my GP for a ‘full body MOT’ to ensure I am not at risk before beginning training. Do you agree? Endurance training can be done in the pool, on an exercise bike or on a cross-trainer. If you feel the need to run, do it on a treadmill rather than on a hard road. Your hip will thank you for it. ur supplement this month is rather dear to my heart, as I myself got engaged at Christmas last year. Putting together our wedding issue has been so much fun and incredibly helpful in helping me gather ideas for my big day. I hope it proves as handy for all the other brides-to-be out there. The most important thing to organise for a wedding is, of course, the location. Any ideas about decorative schemes, dresses and flowers (among other things) will probably stem from the architectural styling of the venue - and it can be surprisingly hard to find a place that really strikes a chord. All too often wedding locations can seem stuffy or corporate or formal, but editing this supplement has schooled me in some of the more unique London spaces for hire – and having come to my engagement with a rather open mind (no preconceived plans, no much-imagined big white wedding since the age of twelve), I’ve really enjoyed finding out more about the characterful, colourful venues out there. In our supplement you’ll find tips and advice from top London wedding planner Mark Niemierko, beautiful gift and jewellery ideas as well as the all-important venue round-up. The magazine itself is also bridal-themed, with long-wear make up suggestions and a ‘What to Wear’ wedding fashion page, as well as a feature spotlight on the best historical venues in the local area - some of which you may never have heard of before. HOW DID YOU GET INTO WEDDING PLANNING? I worked in TV and film production from an early age. I enjoyed the organisational element, working on PR and events. Obviously that kind of background is good practice for wedding planning – you run things like a military operation; there’s no room for error! I had a grand plan to start an events company with a wedding branch, but weddings just took off. When I started the company, wedding planning wasn’t being done that well in London. WHAT ARE THE MAIN THINGS INVOLVED IN PLANNING A WEDDING FOR A CLIENT? Everything! The main thing is getting on well with clients and being adaptable. I don’t think you can love the job for the sake of loving it or do it purely for financial gain. You have to want to do it.

WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT THING TO ORGANISE? There’s no one thing; there are difficult elements. It’s not so enjoyable working with clients who don’t share your mind-set or unprofessional suppliers. I also really dislike working with bad service; trying to teach people how to give 5-star service… is basically teaching people how to do their jobs properly! This quite often applies to venues that, surprisingly frequently, don’t understand how important service is. TELL US ABOUT THE CRAZIEST WEDDING YOU’VE ORGANISED… There’s so many! They’re all individual. I did once have to plan a wedding in two days; the bride was flying in from South Africa on the day of the wedding, there was no dress, so she had to try things on in the morning in her hotel suite! It just goes to show you can do a wedding with very little notice.

WEDDING COSTS CAN ESCALATE WILDLY: WHAT ARE YOUR TOPTIPS FOR SAVING MONEY? I would say just really think about your own personal tastes as a couple. Don’t try to be something you’re not. If you’re a foodie pair, have a reception in a restaurant for example. What tends to happen is that couples find themselves doing things in a formulaic way rather than a personal one. If you like drinking and socialising, spend at the bar instead of on sugar almonds! Don’t throw a wedding for 150 people if you’d really rather something more intimate. You don’t have to have a band playing just because its traditional, you can do whatever you want! It’s less about saving money and more about spending wisely. AND TIPS FOR THE DAY IN GENERAL? WEDDING SPECIAL < anything until the day itself – you don’t want to be doing the seating plan on the morning of the wedding. The most you want to be thinking about on the day is when to open a bottle of champagne. And if something does go wrong and you haven’t got a planner sorting it for you, let it be. You can’t control everything, so enjoy your big day! IF YOU HAD A CLIENT FOR WHO TIME AND MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, WHAT KIND OF WEDDING WOULD YOU PLAN? For me, it’s not about that. The couple are at the core of what I do, so it’s not about what I want to plan. I’ve been asked to take complete control on occasion but my aim is to make a wedding personal to the couple. Even if I have a limitless budget, I don’t want to wade in with a load of crazy ideas for the sake of it. When a couple aren’t so forthcoming about what they want, I have to draw it out of them. What era do they like? What colours? What flowers? What food? I know immediately from the details they give me which suppliers to go to. I also like to break the day into ‘acts’. I hate going to a ceremony when you can see the band getting ready at dinner; I think its better to break the day up – maybe go to a different room for dessert or dancing, to keep the excitement and keep the guests guessing a little. You plan logistically first and then get creative. Often I’ll do a walk-through at a venue and get ideas for colours, furniture and lighting etc. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE VENUE? Venue is crucial. You can’t plan anything without a venue. Not the lighting, the flowers or the band. It all depends on the staging, the space, a late licence etc. And you can’t send the invitations out without deciding that first. It’s important as a planner to point out the pros and cons of a particular venue to clients. If you want dancing, you might not be able to work with a small country house.

OF ALL THE VENUES YOU HAVE WORKED WITH, WHAT HAS IMPRESSED YOU MOST? The Dorchester hotel, for all-out wow. It’s an obvious choice but its renowned for its good service. You don’t want your guests waiting for champagne – if service is bad no one will notice how lovely the flowers are! The Dorchester has variety; for a 20 person wedding, there’s The Penthouse and Pavilion Suite, for a classic elegant couple there’s The Orchid Rooms for 120 guests, for 400 guests you’ve got The Ballroom and if you’re ultra contemporary there are The Crystal Rooms. The Dorchester has venues within venues! The rooms and spas are convenient too. I also like Kensington Palace Orangery, the Banqueting House at Whitehall, One Marylebone and One Mayfair and I must mention Claridge’s too. ANY QUIRKY VENUES LONDONERS MIGHT NOT HAVE HEARD OF BEFORE? We did a wedding at the Louise Blouin Foundation in Ladbroke Grove; it’s a gallery and a real blank canvas so you can have a lot of fun there. Number Sixteen is a small hotel in South Kensington with a secret garden - perfect for something very intimate.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PERSONAL TOUCHES A COUPLE CAN ADD TO MAKE THEIR BIG DAY SPECIAL? Overall the day should be a reflection of the couple. Throw in your favourite cocktail. If you like fast food, serve hamburgers in the evening. We’ve even thrown in Christian Dior dressing tables in bedroom suites before so lady guests can treat themselves to Dior products; they were also given silk nighties with their initials sewn into the pocket. I like the subtle touches – a newspaper delivered to everyone’s room on the morning of the wedding, wrapped in a ribbon bearing the couple’s name for example - nothing too in your face. LASTLY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR YOUR OWN WEDDING? I wouldn’t do a sit-down dinner. I’d do an intimate ceremony, earlier in the day, maybe with a lunch for 20 people and then later in the evening a black-tie, stand-up party with buffet food. I always try to make a dinner upbeat and short: from a guest perspective, the dinner may not be as fun. You might be plonked next to someone you can’t bear so you don’t want to be stationed there!  niermierko.com

ocation can be the most difficult thing to decide on when organising a wedding. If you choose to have the ceremony in London (and don’t already have somewhere in mind), it can be surprising how few spaces truly strike a chord with you and your partner’s individual taste and specifications. And it’s probably the first thing you need to arrange, as any ideas about theme, décor, even the dress, can stem from the final choice of venue. If more modern venues leave you cold, an historical one could be the answer. All that architecture can offer much in the way of classicism, style, and atmosphere. We look at three of the best historical venues in the area.

Old Finsbury Town Hall

A grade II* listed building, registered with English Heritage as a building of great historical significance. This grand example of late 19th century Civic Architecture is found on the intersection of six Finsbury streets in the heart of Clerkenwell, set in an island bound by Rosebery Avenue, Garnault Place and Rosoman Street. Evans Vaughan’s design of the Town Hall’s brick and stonework is “free Flemish Renaissance”. There are Baroque influences seen in the female figures and carved frieze above the first floor at the Rosoman Street and Garnault Place junction. Art Nouveau detailing (quite radical at the time of building) combines with the stained glass – an effect that was popular in the early 20th century.

Old Finsbury Town Hall is holding weddings again, following restoration in 2005 by the Urdang Academy, a long established performing arts school that was formerly based in Covent Garden. Urdang relocated in January 2007, but the town hall continues a hundred year tradition as an events venue: punk, rock and operatic legends are reputed to have been married here! theoldfinsbury townhall.co.uk

Wilton’s Music Hall

Wilton’s is the oldest surviving Grand Music Hall in the world – wow, that’s enough to want to hold your wedding there! It belongs to the first generation of public house music halls that appeared in London during the 1850s and which, only fifty years later, had all but disappeared. Originally 5 terraced houses, John Wilton opened Wilton’s Music Hall in 1858. Since then it has been home to the missionaries, survived two world wars, been a rag warehouse and unfortunately become derelict. Wilton’s heyday as a music hall was short-lived: just twenty-two years. Several landlords followed after John Wilton and, in 1880, performances ceased when his final successor was unable to renew the licence due to new fire regulations. Nowadays, Wilton’s does accommodate weddings for two months of summer in the main hall; as such you’re advised to book ultra early as the venue prioritizes its performance and theatrical calendar also.

upcakes are all the rage. En vogue for the last few years, cute as anything, kitsch but still chic, they combine all the most fun parts of femininity – a touch of Marie Antoinette here, a dash of Alice in Wonderland there – into one bright, bitesized package. No doubt sparked by the starring role played by New York’s Magnolia’s Bakery in Sex and the City, cupcakes quickly became as cool as Carrie Bradshaw’s couture. But the end of the show itself did not slow the ascent of the mighty cupcake, and in Britain what was once a simple, rather plain teatime treat has become a national obsession – and a surprisingly steadfast seller even during the recession. Cupcake businesses, often run by mums turning their expertise into acumen, are doing a roaring trade, and we the masses seem unable to stop ourselves partaking. Why should we? In 1950s America, a tray of cupcakes was often taken into school on a child’s birthday; a tradition slowly being revived in pockets of the UK today – not least in Primrose Hill. SWEET THINGS Boasting customers such as Dominic Cooper, Emma Thompson and Sophie Dahl, Sweet Things has become a neighbourhood favourite in Primrose Hill. Natalie Allen, who started the company, moved to London from Cheshire 15 years ago and – frankly – was disappointed with the capital’s cakes. She missed home baking, goodies the way grandma used to make them: “Even now, I can’t eat Starbucks or Costa cake or anything like that. Back then I just thought, where is there to go for a cup of tea and a decent cake that’s not mass produced?” Allen always knew she’d be involved with food somehow, having grown up in a family of keen bakers. A project manager in the city, she would spend her spare time making cakes and desserts for friends’ parties, and the success of her efforts quickly turned her thoughts to the

idea of making her hobby into something more permanent. Fortunately, her husband advised her to chase her dream; she never looked back. After completing a cookery course at the Cordon Bleu, Allen began to bake from home and sell her wares at luxury food markets, as well as baking for private customers and taking samples to small, independent shops and delis. The response was enthusiastic, and her business began to grow and grow. Soon she was stocking The Bread Stall on Clapham’s Northcote Road – prime cupcake territory, with almost more Bugaboos than people. The bakery was soon ordering up to a thousand cupcakes a week. But it was the renowned West End department store Selfridges that was Allen’s ultimate customer. She had her heart set on supplying them, pursuing the store’s food hall buyer doggedly. She knew that the amount of pitches Selfridges received daily from similar companies must number in the hundreds, but an initial rejection didn’t faze her. She knew the problem must lie with the sheer number of applications the shop faced, rather than with the taste of her cakes, so she sent samples to the buyer and to the food hall’s counter staff. SWEET THINGS MADAGASCAN VANILLA CUPCAKES 110g butter, softened 110g caster sugar 110g plain flour 2 eggs 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp Madagascan vanilla extract Up to 2 tbsp milk if necessary 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees fan/200 degrees C/gas mark 6. 2. Cream butter and sugar with a hand mixer or bowl and wooden spoon! 3. Mix flour and baking powder in a bowl. 4. Mix eggs and vanilla in another bowl. 5. Now beat in some eggs to the butter and sugar mix, then some flour, alternating until all is mixed, finishing with flour last. Add milk until dropping consistency is achieved. Alternatively, place all cake ingredients except milk in a food processor and cream together. Add enough milk until mixture is dropping consistency. 6. Using an ice cream scoop or 2 spoons, spoon mixture into 12 or so cupcake cases until ¾ full. 7. Put in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the cupcakes are golden on top. Allow cupcakes to cool on a wire rack. 8. Ice with vanilla or chocolate buttercream and decorate with mini eggs!

RESTAURANT REVIEW: LITTLE BAY, EC1R

LITTLE BAY Gretel Baron heads to Little Bay for a bistro experience on a budget...

n first entering Little Bay restaurant, you are immediately met with friendly staff in an intimate setting. The walls are a bold red colour and adorned with gold mythological paintings while candles flicker on every table. My partner and I headed down on a week night when the atmosphere was relaxed yet buzzing with tables nestled away in cove corners. There is plenty to whet the appetite at Little Bay; it seems ashame not to try everything- the Beef Bourguignon and the Chicken and Parma Ham were both serious contenders for our final choice. For starters, my partner finally settled on the Pork Belly served with caramelised apple sauce and parsnip mash, whilst I opted for the Warm Lobster Tart served with a poached egg. Our meals arrived swiftly… and were devoured as quickly as they came. The pork belly was succulent and tender, complemented by the opposing flavours of tangy apple sauce and light parsnip mash; it easily rivalled the pork belly we’ve eaten in some of London’s top restaurants. Similarly, the warm lobster tart was light, balanced perfectly alongside the poached egg and hollandaise sauce.

For the mains, my partner opts for the classic Rib-Eye Steak served with potatoes, green beans and the ravedabout home-cut chips fried in goose fat. The steak is cooked to my partner’s ideal specification and served with a fresh side salad; not that one needs any more food than is served, as the portions are incredibly generous. The same is true for my Vegetarian Muffin, which comes with (giant) garlic mushrooms, roasted red peppers, (beefy) grilled halloumi, potato wedges and a side salad. The meal is impressively large, however quantity is not replaced with quality, as each component of the meal tastes delicious. Just when my trousers are beginning to feel the pinch of my expanding waistline, our dessert of Banoffee Pie arrives. We could only manage to share one, sadly, but I’ll be returning for a taste of the Chocolate Log with poached pear and vanilla icecream very soon! The pie, which was of course large, even by Little Bay standards was light, creamy and smothered with thick chocolate sauce. The entire meal was polished off nicely with a bottle of the Chilean Merlot and two filter coffees.

Beverages, like the meals here are all well priced, as all of the wines are generally under £30. In fact, everything is reasonably priced at Little Bay. On the main menu, starters are priced at £2.55 between noon and 7pm and at £3.55 thereafter. Light meals (which include a grilled home-made burger and organic lamb meat balls) are priced at £6.45 all day, whilst main courses are £8.45 after 7pm. The specials are slightly dearer, yet still undeniably reasonable. The priciest starter is £4.65 and the main course £11.95 (still, hardly average London prices). Considering how quickly the meals arrive and taking into account the price, Little Bay is also the perfect place to lunch. For a starter of say, moules mariniere and a light main of fresh egg tagliatelle, you can spend less than £10 (an amount easily expended in Pret-a Manger in one day). From now until 2nd May, all meals are half price (excluding the Specials menu), starters are £1.98 and mains are £4.48. Outside of Farringdon, Little Bay also exists in South Croydon, York Road, Belsize Park and Battersea, where you can listen to live music whilst you dine. Although I have a BSc in Sociology & Anthropology, I have always been a creative artistic person. When I left University I worked with an architect who also had a furniture design company and I learnt about traditional woodwork while there. I enjoyed this but wanted to do more and study the world of creative contemporary design. I set out to find a course of study that would refine my skill set. I also needed to find a job to sustain me while I decided what to study, so I found myself training and volunteering to become an advice worker for the Citizens Advice Bureau. I realized working directly with people was something I thoroughly enjoyed. Did you always know you would be an entrepreneur? I would say to an extent, but environment has had a big effect. As I was growing up I was exposed to a lot of enterprise and I often had the privilege of sitting in on my father’s business meetings. Build relationships and acquaintances with business owners at different levels and ask questions. This is useful and important; it helps to clarify things in your head. What advice would you give to someone who is looking to grow their business? Find someone who has done what you would like to do and ask them to mentor you, or at least meet with you, so you can get some invaluable insider knowledge. Have a plan that indicates what you’d like to achieve, the timescale, the resource and development requirements and how much it costs along with the source of investment. Don’t start out before you are sure of where you are heading. Although you may survive; it is unwise to knowingly head into the desert ill-equipped. Fast forward five years, where do you think your business will be in 2016? I believe that Distinctly Different will be recognised as a front-runner in the field of personal development in the UK. VAVOOM HEALTH

TV Personality and Journalist Lowri Turner has conquered her past diet issues and is now a qualified Nutritionist and Hypnotherapist. Her brand new clinic in Muswell Hill has opened as a result of the success of the original Great Portland Street clinic; now in its second year of operation. We chat to Lowri about her new profession and the power of nutrition and hypnotherapy... People will know you as a TV presenter and may associate you with Fashion and Interiors; how did you get involved with nutrition and hypnotherapy and when did you start VaVoom Health? I started training about five years ago for various reasons; I struggled with my weight over many years, particularly in my twenties when it went up and down by three stone. Then I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). There’s no kind of treatment for it and you have to learn how to control your weight. I also suffered with Rosacea and again, you can control that through diet, so I became interested in how food affected me. In my late thirties I was looking for a new direction so decided to study nutrition. I realised that when I was gaining weight, I had every diet book going, but couldn’t follow any of them. That’s why I thought, I need to find a way to help people to change their behaviour and I trained in hypnotherapy too. Are all the treatments offered, a combination of hypnotherapy and nutrition? Yes, that’s what makes us unique; there’s no one really who does both. What is interesting is that a trained hypnotherapist will tell you the answer to everything is in the mind. A nutritionist will tell you that the answer to everything is through the food you eat! The reason people come to see me is that they’ve tried everything else; they’ve done weight watchers and they don’t understand why they can’t keep their weight where they want it to be. The more clients I’ve seen, the more it’s

made me realise the key, absolutely, is in observing the behaviour around food. Do you think people are sceptical or intimidated by the idea of hypnotherapy? I think they are both actually. People always say ‘does it really work?’ or ‘You’ll never be able to hypnotise me’. There is nobody who is ‘un-hypnotisable’, but you have to use a different approach for different people and respect that some people are naturally more guarded. I don’t hypnotise clients, I allow them to hypnotise themselves, so it’s not about them giving up control, it’s about enabling them to relax deeply. What is the general procedure when someone comes to see you with a problem? People come to see me for a first appointment – for which they don’t pay – and we sit down for 50 minutes. They will have filled in a lot of detailed paperwork to do with their medical history. I see people for all kinds of reasons; fertility problems, stress, skin conditions... I ask them questions about their condition; what treatments they’ve sought, what kind of medication they’re on etc. I also do a mood questionnaire where they answer questions that will give me an idea of what’s happening with their brain biochemistry. In the first session we discuss all the information and I make an initial assessment. The next session is primarily nutritional and that’s when I would design them a food/ supplement plan to discuss in detail. A client would also take home a series of hypnotherapy CDs.

What’s the feedback been like? Really good. When I launched the clinic, the capital was in the grip of the recession but I’ve been very surprised with how busy I’ve been right from the beginning. How does running the clinic compare with your TV/media work? It’s very, very different. I think it requires a degree of humility that’s not necessary on television. I had to learn to listen to people... and I think I grew up actually; a sense of maturity is required. What’s the key to success in running health clinics? The client is key. My job is to really listen to what they want to do. They decide what they want to address: you don’t judge and you don’t push things, it’s all about what they want to achieve. This approach is far more likely to elicit success. Are there plans to expand Vavoom Health in the future? I’m working on a supplement line at the moment and am writing a book about brain functions and losing weight this year; it’s an area that I think is so interesting. GAYMER’S CAMDEN CRAWL So what does this year’s Camden Crawl have in store for us? Quite a few changes are afoot, the main one being the plan to put Kentish Town on the map The Forum is due to replace The Roundhouse as one of the main evening venues, while the Roundhouse itself will now be used as a hosting theatre with an outdoor live stage and BBQ area. Several new venues in Kentish Town are now also on the crawl’s programme. The main entrance to the event will be located at the outdoor arena on Hawley Crescent. Residents of Camden Borough are invited to attend the festival free of charge by applying on the official website. Other free events for residents will include an amazing art installation at St. Michael’s Church, curated by UNKLE star James Lavelle, and (as if there wasn’t enough to occupy yourself with already!) the simultaneous Comedy Crawl. It will feature more than 100 top comedians performing across seven neighbouring venues. We talked to up-andcoming London indie band The Wild Palms about their impending show at the Camden Crawl. THE WILD PALMS You took the name Wild Palms from a Faulkner novel. It’s a great name. What made you choose it? We spent a long time trying to think of a name but when you try and manufacture them they always seem a bit forced. I was reading The Sound and the Fury and it was in the back. It just seemed to work for us, we liked the link to nature, primitivity. Your music seemed to have evolved even before you signed to One Little Indian last year, progressing from more angular, agitated post-punk inflected songs to more intense and often miasmic squalls of noise and melody. What inspired this evolution, and what can we expect from your debut album? We’re always trying to challenge ourselves and keep it interesting for ourselves and people who listen to it. We’re always trying to push ourselves and have continued doing so since we’ve been signed, more so actually. Our debut is an album of subtlety, space and noise, it demands patience from the listener I think. One Little Indian had seemed kind of dormant for a while, but in the last year the label has sprung back into action, signing yourselves and fellow Londoners Flats. What’s your relationship with the label like?

We have a good relationship with them. They generally just let you get on. We’ve always said that the best thing about One Little Indian is that they give you nigh-on full creative control. That’s very rare. You did a cover of a song by one of the label’s most famous signings, Bjork (Human Behaviour)- has she heard it? Not sure if she’s heard it. I’d imagine she probably has bigger things on her plate. What’s inspiring you at the moment, be it in music or art or literature or whatever? All of the above. At the moment we’re just gagging to get back in the studio and to keep writing. You seem like a band that’s active on an intellectual level as well as more immediate aesthetic or emotional levels. What’s your approach to writing lyrics? What do you want to explore and achieve in lyrical terms? My approach to writing lyrics changes, or has changed. I used to cram prewritten lyrics into a song, and the lyrics were often about very niche topics written like riddles, cloaked in some ways. For [debut album] ‘Until Spring’ I started to write melody and rhythm first and then form the lyrics around that. I always have subjects written down that I want to write about, but I try to refrain from settling on anything concrete rhythm-wise until the melody’s in place. Lyrically, I wanted to involve lyrics that facilitated the mood of the music, I’d listen to the the song and then run with whatever images or emotions it stirred in me. Now I’m kind of trying to be more direct lyrically: less poetic, more brutal, less opaque. Why should fans come and see the Camden Crawl show? We played our best show we’ve ever played there last year, so we’re really looking forward to playing it this year again. Live we’re a different kettle of fish from the album. We treat them as different beasts so live and the way the songs are represented live is definitely worth seeing/hearing etc.  65

en years ago, finding or dating someone you met online came wrapped up in both the negative stigma of geek-dom and genuine concerns over personal safety. The latter being coupled with the ‘type of people who use the Internet can’t possibly be the kind I associate with’. Things, thankfully, changed. Online dating and finding love online was demystified by websites like Facebook and MySpace.. The web became a place to meet up, arrange events and ‘find’ people. The dawn of social media made this concept ‘cool’ and very much in vogue. Now, there are plenty of sites that can help us all find our soul mates – a term I use lightly to encompass a single nightly encounter to marriage. Here are three sites – all very different – to tempt you online in time for Friday night. eHARMONY.CO.UK An independent study confirmed 5% of marriages in the U.S. are thanks to this website. Their formula includes a good qualification questionnaire (that probably needs an evening to fill in)

Good for: Guaranteed dating without the expense - it’s free. Bad for: Matching. Can be rather ‘hit and miss’.

A friend has some experience using this site and while it proved successful, didn’t think it matched up with the kind of person he was hoping for.

MYSINGLEFRIEND. COM I’m still not quite sure what Sarah Beeny knows about online dating, but the concept deserves a place here. Working on the basis that you’ll recommend your friend for a date, it goes some way to remove the stigma of being single and alone. Good for: People who aren’t ready to take the step to online dating but need encouragement. Bad for: People who’ve taken Beeny’s advice on home improvements and failed.

PROPERTY MARKET VIEWPOINT Since the beginning of the year, there has been a shortage of properties, especially in certain price ranges i.e. between £800,000 to £1.5m. There has been a genuine pent up demand as the number of applicants far exceeds the current stock available. There is only a limited amount of properties on the market at one time and I perceive that quite a few people are staying put in their homes and spending money on them internally. Hopefully, the supply of stock will come through but this situation is certainly creating new prices for houses in good central locations. The upper end i.e. between £1.5m and £3.5m is always strong at this time of year as bonuses are being paid and people who already live in Islington are moving into bigger, wider, semi-detached properties. Indeed, we had a 4,500 sq.ft. property in Highbury Hill and within a period of 4 weeks this was under offer at its guide price. We also sold a 3,000 sq.ft. property in Richmond Avenue at a figure of £2,850,000, setting a new premium for this location.

It has been noted that there has been a decrease in the number of first time buyer registrations, but understandably this is due to the increased level of deposit monies needed to facilitate a competitive mortgage arrangement. The selling agents have explained that in order to sell my flat I need to extend my lease. The landlord is refusing to extend my lease. What should I do? Yours is not an unusual situation. Given that your Landlord is unwilling to negotiate with you, an alternative is to force the landlord to extend your lease. Subject to meeting relevant criteria pursuant to the Leasehold Reform, Urban Housing & Development Act 1993 which gives leaseholders the rights to acquire a lease term extension, you can force a landlord to extend your lease by a further 90 years and reduce your ground rent to a peppercorn. You could commence a claim for a lease term extension and once your lease has been extended, place the property on the market. Or, you can begin the process to acquire a lease term extension, serve notice upon the landlord and then assign the benefit of that notice to the incoming purchaser so that the purchaser continues with the action after completion. This has several benefits to both parties. Firstly, you can sell your property without having to pay a premium for the lease term extension or being liable for costs because both shall become the responsibility of the purchaser. Secondly, the purchaser will not have to wait to two years before owning the flat before being in a position to force the landlord to grant them a lease term extension.
