ot to sound too much of a girlie, but my knowledge of The Beautiful Game is somewhat limited. Despite the offside rule being explained to me several hundred times by my football loving friends, and my undiminished admiration of The Beckham Torso, I am fairly bewildered by the sport. However, this hasn’t stopped me from getting excited by the arrival of the World Cup, donning my England shirt, sipping my obligatory pint and cheering at the TV screen in honour of our boys. The fantastic thing about the World Cup is its much-needed, shared cause, which lifts everyone’s spirits; football fan or not, it has become the patriotic social event not to be missed. So, with this in mind, we have brought you the five best venues in the area that offer the best settings for you and your mates to watch the games in style. We also chat to the England women’s football team captain, Faye White, about our chances of winning the World Cup, how the perception of women’s football is improving, and how playing for her country has been one of her greatest achievements. But don’t worry if you really can’t understand all the excitement over a handful of men running around with a ball – we have lots to keep you entertained. A fascinating exhibition which illustrates that although Georgian monumental painting dates back centuries, it wasn’t until the 20th century, which marked the beginning of easel painting, that a new language of artistic expression came about.

Newly appointed Mayor, Councillor Mouna Hamitouche, is the firstever Algerian Labour Councillor and the first Arab female mayor in the UK. Mouna has three children and has lived in Islington with her family for over 19 years. She was first elected on 4 May 2006, representing Barnsbury Ward, and is a founding member of the Algerian British Connection (ABC), where she still works part-time as a Business Adviser and Coordinator assisting the Executive Committee. With a background in communications, she worked as journalist for ten years, later lecturing at the Institute of Information and Communication, University of Algiers, until 1991.

TAKING ROOT IN ISLINGTON A green-fingered school has become the first in Islington to plant its own community orchard, thanks to a pioneering food-growing fund. Teachers and children from Hugh Myddelton School rolled up their sleeves to help experts from the London Orchard Project dig in fruit trees. When mature, the trees will yield five varieties of apple, including Cox’s Orange Pippin and Russet, as well as Marjorie Seedling plums and Conference pears. The orchard is the first part of an edible garden, with raised beds for vegetables and herbs, funded through Islington Council’s £1 million Edible Islington community food growing programme. It is also the first of 12 community orchards being planted around London by the London Orchard Project this winter, five of which will be in Islington.
Thousands of residents living on estates will soon be able to recycle their food waste through a pioneering recycling service from Islington Council. Around 2,000 residents living in the borough’s estates can already recycle food waste under a pilot scheme run over the last year. Now the service is set to expand to a further 10,000 properties over the coming year. Almost all residents in street-level properties can already recycle their food waste, along with schools and businesses. This has helped to push Islington’s recycling rate to more than 30 per cent, but many residents living on estates have been asking for the opportunity to recycle their food waste. “Recycling food waste is so important and this service means all we throw away is one tiny bag of rubbish a week,” explains Julia Barclay, a resident of Bevin Court, Finsbury.
LOCAL SUPPORT Residents in Islington are being urged to give local shops a helping hand and earn a useful gift into the bargain. People who promise to do half of their weekly shop locally will be sent an exclusive cloth shopping bag to carry their goods home. The pledge is the latest call to action from Islington Council’s Shop Local campaign, which aims to help boost shops and businesses by encouraging local shopping. “Islington has fantastic shops, from great market stalls to hidden local favourites,” says Councillor Lucy Watt, Islington Council’s deputy leader. “We want to do everything we can to help them, especially in these difficult times.” To sign the Shop Local pledge online visit www.islington.gov.uk/ shoplocal or call 020 7527 3093.

She tells Jenny White how the attitude to women’s football is changing, and how she has never been intimidated by the male-dominated sport 12

t’s official, World Cup fever is truly upon us. And as we wait with baited breath to see whether we will be celebrating world domination on the pitch, it seems we are all prepared to go to extreme lengths to support our team to the bitter end. And someone who understands the country’s excitement, although doesn’t condone skiving off work, is the captain of the England women’s football team and Arsenal player, Faye White. She laughs when I tell her that one in four UK workers plan to pull a sickie to watch World Cup games over the next month and, depending on how Rooney et al do, nine out of ten of us plan to skive for an average of 3.5 days, with figures by Continental Tyres showing that one in ten die-hard fans would quit their job if they were refused time off work by their boss. “It is our national sport and I think the whole tournament really gets everyone going, everyone cheering for the same purpose and it is a good chance to socialise – I am really looking forward to it,” smiles Faye, who hesitates ever so slightly when I ask her about our chances of winning. She gives the safe response. “We have a good chance of winning. Although we do always build it up, but I think we have a good group this year, there are far worse we could have had and I think our group is relatively straightforward – you would hope. I think we can get to the semi’s at least.” Faye began her Arsenal career aged 18, after being scouted by the north London team while playing in the England squad, despite growing up in a Spurs household. Living proof that football isn’t just for boys, as a child Faye would play with the boys in the playground, until she reached sixth form, where she joined a girls’ team. “I wasn’t really encouraged through my schooling and I used to nag my teacher at secondary school to set up a team. My brother used to play football and I would go along and train with his team, but never actually got to play a proper game. I used to stand on the halfway line with the oranges,” laughs Faye, who believes spending so many years playing with boys helped her game. “I couldn’t
understand why I shouldn’t play. I could do all that the boys could do, so why couldn’t I get involved? I was never a girl that was put off by wanting to be with the other girls, or intimidated not to take part. I just got on with it because I enjoyed it so much.” Regarded as one of the best central defenders in England, with over 64 International caps and 29 winner’s medals at Club level, Faye has also received an MBE
as well as winning the FA Women’s Premier League 10 times, and the FA Women’s Cup 8 times. Currently ambassador for England’s 2018 World Cup Bid, she is unwavering in her desire to promote women’s football and show it from a female point of view. Statistics that show more than 80 per cent of women are not active enough to stay healthy, due to the fact that being active is seen as being unattractive and Faye, a trained fitness instructor, explains how she has seen first-hand this sort of attitude. “I think the stigma that is put with sport is that you have to be competitive, and being female and competitive is not attractive, but that is not something that ever bothered me. I also think that young girls tend to shy away from sport and sometimes aren’t encouraged as much as they should be. However, I like to think that is changing, thanks to so many positive role models that show you can be sporty and competitive, as well as being feminine,” says Faye, who often trains twice a day in between doing her day job as Arsenal’s Development Officer. “I have seen a massive rise in the number of girls who have got involved in football, and it is often team sports that struggle with that stigma of being competitive – but with events such as the Olympics and the World Cup, I think it only encourages women to get more involved.” However, another problem within women’s sport is that today’s agenda is to be thin, not healthy, and with such busy lives, exercise is often not a priority. “A lot of girls diet instead of exercise and it is not a realistic way of staying fit and healthy. It isn’t a new concept that a balance of exercise and watching what you consume is how to staying looking good,” explains Faye, whose nutrition is often monitored by the England squad chef, who travels with them during international matches. “I have always been interested in nutrition and have just always known that what you put in your body is what you will get out of it. It is about making the right choices and you can have most things in moderation.” Currently teaming up with online supermarket Ocado.com, Faye is fronting their Food-Ball World Cup, which sees 32 international recipes from all the countries in the World Cup available at the click of a mouse. With a list of the ingredients and the ease of buying them online to be delivered to your front door, Faye hopes that it will encourage people to

Interview “IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A BATTLE WITH THE MEDIA AND WITH PEOPLE’S PERCEPTION WHERE THEY WILL ALWAYS COMPARE IT WITH THE MEN’S GAMES, BUT WE HAVE TO GET THEM LOOKING AT IT FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE” widen their cuisine horizons. “I thought it was a great way of involving females who do a lot of shopping and entertaining, and it encourages people to get involved in cooking good food,” explains Faye. “It is a great initiative because around this time people do socialise, getting their friends and family over to watch the games and, instead of the usual pizza and beers, you can try something a little more extravagant.” After 14 years playing for England and Arsenal, the 32-year-old is happy to say that the attitude to women’s football is slowly changing. Despite the constant comparison with the men’s football, which she says is understandable but sometimes frustrating, the more success both her teams get, the more coverage women’s football receives. “It has always been a battle with the media and with people’s perception, such that they will always compare it with the men’s games, but we have to get them looking at it from a different angle.Yes, it is slower but all the technical skills are still there. It is like women’s tennis; they don’t hit the ball as hard, but the skill is still there and they often have more rallies, so the games are just as entertaining as the men’s,” says Faye with obvious determination. And her future hopes for the game? “The 2007 World Cup in China was a pivotal point in women’s football, because the level of the game really stepped up a gear and the media took notice. It seems the further we get, the more the media makes space in the columns for us and takes us seriously. So, the plan is just to keep going forward and doing our best.”

trolling down St John Street from the Angel 160 years ago, you might have found yourself flanked by doleful cattle, en route from the countryside to be slaughtered at Smithfield Market. A vital bridge between the hamlet of Islington and the City of London until the mid-19th century, the street evolved into an industrial hub, home to brewers, watchmakers, lead and glass manufacturers and more. Today the market still stands and, though the slaughter of cattle on site has long since been banned, it remains the largest wholesale meat market in the UK. Otherwise, 21st-century St John Street is a very different animal: traditional industries have given way to those of architecture, design, and food and drink; factories and breweries have been converted to stylish flats and offices. It is characterised by diversity in every sense: it is home to Georgian terraced houses, Victorian factories, executive apartments and dense 20th century social housing. Lively pubs, cosy sandwich bars and white linen restaurants all sit in close proximity.

Just off Rosebery Avenue itself is Sadler’s Wells, a theatre site since 1683 and now the UK’s leading dance house. This final leg of St John Street has a hint of vintage glamour about it. You might start with a visit to Smiths (on Charterhouse Street). A bar, brunch venue, and upmarket eatery rolled into one, it has three floors, each with its own distinct flavour. Go right to the top for steak, champagne and a fabulous view over Smithfield and across to St Paul’s. On St John Street itself
WHAT TO DO AND SEE: Stroll around the Grade II-listed Smithfield market, admiring the imposing Victorian glass and iron buildings and soaking up the site’s fascinating history. A market site since the 12th century, the current buildings were designed in the 1860s by architect Sir Horace Jones, best known for designing Tower Bridge. Today it is open from 3am on weekdays – arrive by 7am to see the full range of stalls. As you move on up St John Street, take some time to admire the huge spectrum of architectural endeavour. Look out for George Farmiloe and Sons warehouse at No 16, the impressive former headquarters of Clerkenwell lead and glass merchants who continued to trade there until 1999. A little further up on the left is the 1906 Mallory Buildings, one of the earliest examples of council housing in London. And at

GREEN GETAWAY Jenny White discovers the benefits of getting away from it all and unwinding in true eco-luxury
S
ometimes the need to escape the hustle and bustle of city life can be overwhelming. Although there are many places in and around Islington where you can hide yourself away, it is never quite the same as getting out of the smog and breathing in fresh air. So, with boyfriend in tow, I headed to The Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall, for what I hoped would be two days of utter relaxation. Surrounded by National Trust-protected coastline and providing eco-friendly luxury, this adult-only hotel and spa was so much more than I expected. The remarkable natural views from every angle of the hotel were breathtaking, while the romantic, windswept beach of Mawgan Porth at the bottom of the cliff which elevates the hotel, played host to only a few surfers and families. Built to harmonise with the scenery, the angular building with wellframed vistas, features a decorative infinity pool which stretches out from the reception area to the Atlantic; the flat roofs are covered in sea thrift, rocks and reclaimed materials to resemble the surrounding cliffs tops. Heated by solar panels, the inside swimming pool reflects out onto the reed-fringed natural outdoor pool, and on the edge of the cliff sit two wood-fired hot tubs – a perfect place, we discovered, for watching the sunset and drinking champagne.
Opened in September of last year by three sisters – Emma, Rebecca and Debbie, the latter having moved from Stoke Newington to Cornwall – The Scarlet is a great advertisement for how best to combine luxury and ecology. The building is heated by a huge £120,000 bio-mass boiler that burns locally harvested woodchips, while a natural ventilation system has been put in place instead of air conditioning units. Grey water recycling initiatives are complemented by the staff being paid to pick up litter from the beach in company time, are also encouraged to car share to work. The natural beauty combined with the eco-friendly aspects of the building, mixed with the pure luxuriousness of the interior, straightaway made me feel peaceful. Our large and spacious room offered panoramic views of the sea, as well as a gloriously lavish waterfall shower and freestanding bath. A sumptuous sofa area in one corner of the room became home to my boyfriend and a couple of beers whilst watching an all-important football game. So, while he cheered on his team, I snuck off to the spa to try an exfoliating body treatment.
Specialising in Ayurvedic ‘journeys,’ the spa is situated in the subterranean level of the hotel, with a labyrinth of winding corridors and secret rooms where treatments for individuals or couples are performed. After my invigorating treatment, where my whole body is exfoliated and then washed off while still lying down, I am left to relax in a hanging pod in the dark for a bit of ‘deep relaxation.’ If you fancy pampering yourself with a pedicure and manicure, then this can be done in your room, leaving the spa purely for holistic treatments. From the spa to the rooms to the library, local artists work adorns, plinths and the walls throughout the hotel. The restaurant is no exception with beautiful pieces

Unlike most hotels, which are utilised as a base to explore the surrounding environs, we found it difficult to take off our organic cotton robes and leave the velvety beanbags of the sunken pit area and the lounges in the grassy courtyards. But with a little cajoling from my boyfriend, we set off across the beach, and up the coastal path to the neighbouring cove of Watergate Bay. In one of the stunning clifftop views and having worked up an appetite from our windswept walk, we settled in for the afternoon at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant, perched on top of the bay overlooking the sea. Three courses and five fabulous cocktails later, we hitched a ride in a taxi back to our hotel for a much-deserved afternoon sleep. Guests ranged from couples, to groups of friends and solo parties looking for some ‘me time’, with the sisters having deliberately set out to make everyone feel welcome, whatever the aim of the stay. Although rest and relaxation where our main activities during our stay, things such as horse riding, deep sea fishing, tree climbing and, of course, surfing are on offer and can be arranged via the hotel. As we took the five-minute journey to Newquay Airport, I was sad to leave. TAVI IS A MINIMALLY INVASIVE ‘KEYHOLE’ PROCEDURE FOR TREATING NARROWED AORTIC VALVES
A
s many of you reading this may already know, the aorta is the main artery coming out of the heart, carrying blood to the whole of the body (see Figure 1). The aortic valve sits at the junction between the heart and the aorta – each time the heart beats, it contracts, pumping blood though the aortic valve which then opens to let blood through before closing to prevent blood flowing back into the heart. In some people, the aortic valve can thicken and stiffen over time and this makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood through the narrowed valve. This is what doctors refer to as ‘aortic stenosis’ and patients with this problem can also experience shortness of breath, chest pain on exertion, dizzy spells or collapses and sudden death. Conventional aortic valve replacement surgery is a tried and tested treatment with excellent results in many patients – but it is a major heart operation which involves opening the chest (a procedure known as a ‘sternotomy’) and going onto a heart-lung bypass machine. In some patients, the risks of such an operation are prohibitively high. In these patients trans-catheter aortic valve implantation is an excellent alternative. The procedure was fi rst performed in 2003 and it is currently reserved for elderly patients and for those in whom the risks of conventional surgery are high. It is limited to these groups because we do not know the long term outcome (5+ years), but this is likely to change as the results of long term research studies become available. THE ARTIFICIAL VALVES There are two different types of valve, the Sapien Transcatheter Heart Valve made by Edwards Lifesciences (www.edwards.com) and the CoreValve made by Medtronic (www.medtronic.

com) – both are made up of, or consist of, soft pliable valve leaflets attached to a rigid frame. The leaflets are made from bovine or porcine pericardial tissue and the frames, from either stainless steel or nitinol. The valves are compacted down so that they can pass through smaller incisions.
THE PROCEDURE There are two options; the trans-femoral and the trans-apical approach. Usually the procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, but sometimes patients can be awake, using a local anaesthetic. The trans-femoral approach is where a wire is passed through a small cut in the skin and into the femoral artery at the top of the leg. The wire is then pushed up the artery to the heart, across the narrowed aortic valve and into the main pumping chamber of the heart (the left ventricle). The compacted replacement valve is tracked along this wire into position where it is expanded into shape, crushing the old valve to one side leaving the new valve in place. In some people the femoral arteries are too narrowed for the artificial valve to be passed through and the trans-apical approach is used. A small cut is made in the left side of the chest, where a wire is passed through, straight through the wall of the heart into the left ventricle and then across the aortic valve. The compacted replacement valve is then tracked along the wire as per the trans-femoral approach. The hole in the heart is closed directly with stitches. MASTER OF INVENTION Bartender, mixologist and owner of Islington’s 69 Colebrooke Row, Tony Conigliaro tells Jenny White the method behind his cocktail madness
T
ony Conigliaro is perched on a chrome bar stool in the middle of his ‘laboratory’, swivelling from side to side. Dressed in a casual jeans and jumper combo, he speaks very gently and smiles slightly, with his soft eyes darting around the room. He is not what you would initially expect of a bartender and one of the UK’s pioneering drinks creators; there is no ego, no bar tricks or bragging about who he knows. The Heston Blumenthal of the cocktail world – he has exchanged ideas with Mr Blumenthal himself – Tony has spent years working and advising in some of London’s top bars: Hakkasan, Zuma, Lonsdale house and Shumi – all the while developing new cocktail recipes and techniques, resulting in some ground-breaking cocktail menus.
In 2000 he helped set up Oliver Peyton’s Knightsbridge bar Isola, and later worked with Rainer Becker to open Shouchu Lounge, the first Shouchu bar outside Asia. In 2009, he won International Bartender of the Year Tales of the Cocktail, and has been presented with a handful of other accolades from Best Drinks List to Best Bar Team. With the creation of cocktails such as the Apple White Lady, the Twinkle, the Smoked Old Fashioned and the re-invention of the Prairie Oyster, the mixology maestro finally took the plunge a year ago and bought his own bar. 69 Colebrooke Row, dubbed “the bar with no name”, is Tony’s first personal bar venture despite 15 years in the business. “I started my bar career working for my now-business partner’s brother, so it has kind of come full circle now that I am working

with her,” smiles Tony. “This has been in the planning for 15 years; it is a bartender’s dream to have their own place, because it means you can express the ideas you want to express. It was about finding the right business partner and the right venue; it wasn’t through lack of looking or trying, but I guess it is like getting into a relationship, you have to do it with someone you trust and I trust my business partner, Cami, implicitly.” Hidden down a quiet side street off Essex Road, the small, yet smart cocktail bar holds a maximum of 40 people. The interior has been influenced by 1950s film noir, using a handful of images from the period as guidelines for the builders, and mixing a little Dolce Vita style with a touch of Bladerunner, it coheres together nicely, creating an atmospheric chic feel. Upstairs is a laboratory containing all manner of equipment; distilling machines and centrifuges sit alongside champagne bottles,
cocktail mixers and a framed poster that boldly shouts, ‘Experiment!’. “My favourite film is Bladerunner, where you have the film noir set in the future; so you have all the reference points that you recognise from film noir, and then a whole load of new stuff that is beyond what you recognise,” says Tony with excitement. “I think it reflects this place as it is retro downstairs with a 1950s feel, and then up here it is quite futuristic.” The laboratory has provided a platform, for the first time in Tony’s career, where he has the space to be much more creative and experimental, affectionately referring to it as “the HQ” of all his ideas. However, he is concerned not to foreground this aspect of the bar too much. “I am a great believer in that the drinks should stand for themselves and have their own life, without the rhetoric that goes around it,” explains Tony, who lives down the road from the bar, near Kings Cross. “Obviously if people ask, we tell them about the lab and what goes into the cocktails, but at the end of the day we are busy being hosts and entertainers; making sure people are happy is the most important part.” Often referred to as a pioneer of the use of molecular mixology in cocktails, Tony screws his face up at the mention of this term and explains that, despite involving some science, it is not the basis of what he
does. “Molecular mixology is a term born out of molecular gastronomy, which was invented as a joke when Nicholas Kurti and Harold McGee weren’t allowed a venue in Scilly for a workshop they were running, unless they had a really posh name to call the course; they just made it up,” smiles Tony. “It is a term that has just kind of stuck, but it doesn’t define what we do. Molecular implies that it is all scientific based and it is not really,” explains Tony. “I have worked with Harold McGee and other food scientists, but I also work with perfumers, designers, alchemists and chocolatiers for inspiration. People have defined what I do as ‘future-retro’ because I look at the old structures of traditional cocktails and then have a modern approach to them – I think this sums it up better, because it is open-ended and implies we use lots of different things.” Having studied art and art history and worked in fashion houses prior to getting behind a bar, Tony is planning on getting an intern who has a PhD in food science to help with the science side of things, as it can get “mindboggling”, allowing him to think outside the box and concentrate on various disciplines which influence his work. It seems clear that Tony is a perfectionist and a patient one at that. “I am in my lab every day, either mixing or working on 41

Food&Drink projects; we are currently working on a project with a chocolatier, so all last week I was distilling chocolate essences to see what happens,” grins Tony. “There are never failures; it is just part of the learning process. Even if something comes out wrong, the mistakes are good in themselves because you have learnt something else that you didn’t set out to do. To arrive at something after 40 times of trying, you know pretty much everything there is to know about that particular thing. There was a time I was trying to figure out about limes and I spent three months learning about limes until I went lime crazy, but I came out of that with an enormous depth of learning.” A place where Tony can put all his discoveries into practice and experiment further, 69 Colebrooke Row is a somewhat secretive bar; unless you have heard of it and are on a mission to find it, you probably won’t unearth it. Often the shutters are closed and, apart from the light of the lantern above the door, it always seems closed. This is all part of Tony’s plan to make his cocktail bar different from all the rest, aside from the exclusive cocktails. “I based it on all the bars in Tokyo where there are the most amazing bars with no signage and you just have to know where it is. I like that element of having to find it and that excitement of having discovered it, making it your own and becoming part of that secret club,” says Tony, who also seems to like the fact that it doesn’t really have a proper name. “I wanted people to name it. In general, people make things their own and often nickname their favourite bar. The locals especially have their own names for this place.” Mixologist, artist or mad scientist? Tony is humble in his response and just prefers bartender. To him success is simple: “just inventing something that is really good and that people like. Something which brings a smile to people’s faces and creates some form of emotion,” explains Tony, still swivelling on his stool. And his foolproof hangover cure for too many cocktails? “Miso soup.” It seems there is nothing that Tony Conigliaro doesn’t know about cocktails.

Tucked away on Liverpool road and set away from the hustle and bustle of Upper Street there is a little gem of a restaurant, Di Monforte. This Italian restaurant is one of the warmest and friendliest restaurants I have been to in a long time. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable about their mouth watering food and certainly assist in creating a fantastic atmosphere. The main pull however, is the outstanding food. Each dish on the menu is freshly prepared and the true taste of Sicilly. With a menu boasting the finest cuisine you can’t go wrong with either a sophisticated business lunch or a romantic meal for two. For starters we shared the very generously sized Antipasto Di MonforteChef’s selection of hot and cold starters then to follow I had the superb, melt in your mouth ‘Costolette D’agnello’-Lamb cutlets, grilled with herbs and white wine. Served with roast potatoes and my guest the Gnocchi with baby spinach cherry tomato and dolce latté. A WISE CHOICE On a visit to one of North London’s most popular Pan-Asian restaurants, Carrie Mitchell finds herself eating her words
I
’m not going to lie to you, when I heard that the restaurant I’d be reviewing this month was a chain restaurant serving up budget-friendly Pan-Asian cuisine, my heart sank – along with my expectations. It’s not that I’ve got anything against chain restaurants; in fact, anyone who knows me will tell you that I could wax lyrical about Pizza Express until the cows come home – and frequently do. But the concept of ‘Pan-Asian’ has always kind of bothered me. If the kitchen is serving up so many different regional varieties – Thai, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Vietnamese – can the chefs really be doing real justice to the intricacies of any one of them? It’s a question I thought I knew the answer to, until I spent an evening at Islington’s branch of Banana Tree Canteen. With its school dinner-style benches and pared back décor, the restaurant draws obvious comparisons to Wagamama, but this more modestly sized chain (with just a few branches across London) seems to be David to Wagamama’s Goliath. The varied menu is of epic proportions, featuring a selection of starters followed
by sections dedicated to noodles and rice, soup-based noodles, regional specialities, curries and stews, and chargrilled meats. Given so many options to choose from, it’s immediately clear that it will take a while for my dining partner and I to come to anything approaching a decision, so we order the spicy prawn crackers to munch on in the meantime. “And would that be with the sweet chilli sauce or the satay sauce?” enquires our smiley server. Doh, another decision! And that was just the start. My Mekong fresh herb salad came with a choice of tilapia fish fillet, vegetarian mock duck, or coriander meatballs. Thankfully, due to my unconditional love for both coriander and meatballs, this was one occasion where no deliberation was required. The salad upon which the meatballs came was a vibrant array of fragrant herbs including fresh mint, basil, and more yummy coriander, topped with a mild chilli and lime vinaigrette, crushed nuts and wonton crisps – a colourful combination, making each mouthful an adventure. Over the table, the Malaysian Laksa Soup (“And would that be with Chicken or Prawns? Chicken please.”)
went down so well, I barely managed to coax a spoonful from my friend, who lapped up the delicately flavoured coconut broth with relish. For the main event, I went for the Mamak Kambing lamb curry, a rich, thick flavourful curry, softened by my side dish of fluffy steamed jasmine rice. While still unable to make a decision, my dining companion opted for the Banana Tree Platter with her steaming Malaysian stew of tiger prawns, tilapia fish fillets and whole fishcakes. The platter option is a clever alternative to ordering a single side dish, whereby you get a little taster of the sesame glass noodle salad, sweet corn cakes, Vietnamese spicy crackers and rice – and thus avoid having to make another tough choice between the tempting accompaniments. When the dessert menu was proffered soon afterwards, it was perhaps the first point in the evening when there was no hesitation. My friend’s silky black rice pudding with coconut ice cream was more than a cut above our sloppy Birds Eye version, while my raspberry and mango sorbet was the perfect finale to an altogether surprising meal – simple, clean, fresh, and decidedly good. ■ Banana Tree Canteen 418 St. John Street London EC1V 4NJ – 020 7278 7565

rom the age of ten, Kelly Fannon has had a passion for design. Originally following a career path in fashion, Kelly changed direction while working with fabrics and began to design collections of wallpapers, fabrics and rugs while living in France. On moving to England in 1997, Kelly studied Interior Design at KLC School of Design and started her interiors business even before she graduated in 2000. Having spent time in New York and London, Kelly Fannon offers a flexible and high-end service for both residential and commercial clients.

I grew up in Florida but went to study textiles in the south of France, which is where I met my husband and we started our family. We have traveled a lot but eventually we settled in London. Each project is different, as is each client, so I don’t really have a house style. I aim to work closely with my clients and figure out solutions to make their space a joy to be in; somewhere to relax and entertain in comfort. My work is firstly inspired by the bones of the building, and then the light, the space and the needs of the client. If they have a particular painting or piece of furniture, or colour they love, then we can also build from there. I source materials from all over London. I often go to Chelsea Harbour Design Centre however, it can often depend on the client, who may already have a good selection of existing items to work with.

My favourite artists are my daughters, who are both artists. But of the late and greats, Rothko, Franz Kline, Motherwell, Yves Klein, Newman, have all had an enduring influence on me.
to decide where to place spots, tracks and pendants. I fi nd light is essential to good design. If your lighting is wrong, your colours are wrong, then furniture will be positioned wrong, the fabrics will look dull and the space unusable. Lighting should be considered first, and not be an afterthought.
My favourite place to hang out in is in museums and galleries, especially in London, which has some of the best in the world. When I’m not working I am with my daughters, laughing, talking, watching movies and going to exhibitions.
My interior tip is to think about what you do in the space and start planning from there. Also, always use a tape measure. What I love about my job is making beautiful spaces. I enjoy bringing together light, colour, patterns and textures and seeing my clients happy and satisfied.
HOME
I couldn’t live without my family. \I love them all. The last book I read was Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s; It is so different from the movie.
My signature drink is Darjeeling tea. This is my favourite of all the teas, however, I do enjoy an expresso after lunch.
My personal interior style is a mixture of contemporary and classic. Mixing white space with colour, along with good lighting, paintings and photos. What services does your business offer? Base Creative offers web design and online marketing. Essentially, that means we work with other businesses to help them get more from the web in terms of marketing. Creating and building websites is a big part of what the company does, although my individual passion and focus is on search engine marketing. What is your background? Originally a freelancer back in early 2002 practicing web developement before anyone really knew what is was, and when only a handful of people knew what Google was. I used that freelancing career to build some valuable contacts and to springboard into starting my own company a year later. Since then, the business has grown significantly, and at its peak employing 7 people. From a desk and a computer in a spare room, to a tiny office in Watford and now to the Business Design Centre, which we moved to over 4 years ago. What makes your company unique to other businesses in your industry? We’ve been doing web design, development and online marketing before many businesses realised it was necessary. At 8 years old, that makes us quite a mature company within our industry. I’ve always specialised in the web, and don’t come from a graphic design background (which is a different skillset altogether). The best thing is that while it’s a small agency, it delivers both design, programming and online marketing in house. I’m keen to keep it that way - it makes impromptu client meetings easier when everyone’s already in the studio! Who are your client base? It ranges -
significantly. While I enjoy working with new businesses (it’s always exciting to see something grow), Base Creative has tended to work with small and medium sized businesses. Other than that, there’s no common demoninator. Some of our clients are multi-nationals, others are microbusinesses with less than 3 guys working there. I enjoy the variety. Saying that, we have worked with quite a few dentists. Not sure how, but we seem to have a great reputation within that industry and I’ve given a few talks for dental associations. How long have you been based in Islington and why did you choose this area for your company? I lived in the area when I was freelancing and really enjoyed the culture, the atmosphere, and of course, the bars and eateries on Upper Street. After moving up to Watford, I knew I’d be back to Angel very soon, and it only took 2 years before I found myself based in an office I had always hoped I’d work in: the Business Design Centre. Being in the creative industry, it felt important to associate the company as design-led. From here to Shoreditch and Hoxton, and anywhere in between is synonymous with art and design, so it felt natural to be based here.
What tip would you give to new budding businesses? Tough question! Make sure you have a great website!! It definitely comes down to enjoying what you do and the variety of work the business gives you. It’s what I love about my job at Base Creative: every day is different, with it’s own challenges. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it won’t be long before you feel the need to do something else. When you are not working what do you enjoy doing? Keen cyclist. I helped Base Creative win TFL’s cycle to work challenge for the last two years running (I’m sure the others did more cycling than me, though!). I also attend a public speaking club called Toastmasters which I would highly recommend (Early Bird Speakers). I’m one of those people who used to hate public speaking (which didn’t bode well for my role in Base Creative). Now that’s completely changed and look forward to getting up on stage! I believe the Islington club (London Communicators) meets every other Monday in the Hilton. Other than that, eating out and spending valuable time with friends is always at the top half of my list. Favourite places to go in the area? I feel I need to venture further into Islington. There are some really great pubs if you look hard enough. Places I’ve been to that I like are The Canonbury for a posh Sunday Lunch, OQO for a Friday night bar, Islington Tap for a Thursday night pint, Ottolengi for their chocolate brownies, 15 for a decent breakfast and for a quick curry, Gufaa never disappoints. THE BIG FELLA I
A groundbreaking force in British theatre for over 40 years, director Max Stafford-Clark tells Carrie Mitchell he still has big plans for his Holloway-based company, Out of Joint.
t’s impossible to discuss the history of theatre in this country without repeated references to Islington resident Max Stafford Clark. The prominent director was the longest serving artistic director of the controversial Royal Court Theatre; helped to kickstart the careers of contemporary writers such as Caryl Churchill and David Hare, and bigname actors including his good friend Gary Oldman; as well as founding not one but two envelope-pushing theatre companies: Joint Stock, created back in 1974, and his current baby, Out of Joint. “I was at the Royal Court from 1979 to 1993,” says Max, “and when I left I wanted to start a company that both toured and was committed to new writing.” From the company’s inaugural production in 1994: a pairing of Sue Townsend’s The Queen and I, a royal romp through a council estate,
with Jim Cartwright’s award-winning The Road, which raged against the 80s Thathcherite regime - it was clear Out of Joint had something to say. This would come as no surprise to those familiar with Max’s politically provocative approach. “The 80s was a particularly perilous time under Thatcher when the whole art world was threatened,” Max recounts. “When I was at the Royal Court, there was a real fear that funding would be withdrawn. The problem is that the Tories believe in art but don’t believe in funding, whereas the labour party believe in funding but don’t believe in art so you’re always struggling one way or another. Out of Joint receives subsidies from the state to enable us to tour the UK - and hopefully we still will under this fucking Conservative government!” Max’s fighting spirit is clear not only in the way he speaks but in all he has achieved,
pushing the boundaries every step of the way. With Joint Stock, he pioneered a uniquely collaborative approach to creating works for the stage – a workshop system, now widely studied, where the actors and writers work together to create the texts. “I think it was important because it worked in a collective way,’ he explains. “There was a certain involvement of everyone involved and that led to a real possession of the work and a real commitment.” Max’s inclusive approach to the theatre has won him many fans, including writer Sebastian Barry, who he recently collaborated with on the widely acclaimed Andersen’s English at The Hampstead Theatre. Speaking to The Guardian back in February, Barry had this to say: “I’ve known Max Stafford-Clark since 1992, when I met him at the Royal Court to discuss a possible commission. He shepherded the play, found

an astounding actor to be in it, resisted the doubts of various other agencies, and more or less changed my life and the life of my wife and then small children. This might be considered reason enough to have Max as my hero, and yet that is not all the reason.” Indeed it isn’t, for despite all of Max’s extraordinary professional achievements, nothing says more about his courage and strength than his remarkable recovery following three massive strokes which went off in his brain ‘like fireworks’ four years ago. “I was in hospital for almost 6 months,” recalls Max, “and even though people were very good to me - friends, my brother, particularly my partner [playwright Stella Feelihy] - I really missed the company of actors. “I came out of hospital in December and was back in the rehearsal room by January. It was ridiculously early and I don’t think I made a particularly good job of that first piece, but then a few months later, I did some fascinating work with a group of

opinion that theatre should provoke debate as well as entertain. It’s clear that despite the setbacks of his stroke and the approach of his 70th birthday next year, Max has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon so what’s next for the powerhouse of a director? “We’re gearing up for the The Big Fellah – a new play by Richard Bean [a former punk, psychologist and stand-up comedian turned successful playwright] about a group of Irish-American republicans who are raising money for a charitable organisation accused of being a front for the IRA. It starts rehearsals at the end of July and I’m really looking forward to getting to grips with it.”

Apple might be grabbing the headlines with the launch of its iPad, but it’s the iPod dock market that’s really booming. Pioneer’s NAS-5 is such a product, but it goes up against some stiff competition. Panasonic’s compact SC-HC40 (£225) has a built-in microphone in case someone calls while your iPhone is ensconced in the 40W dock, while with Yamaha’s PDX-50 (£150) you can keep your iPhone or iPod in your hand – music is sent wirelessly to the 30W speaker unit via a small cradle on the phone itself. On the top is a small flap that hides a connector that will fit iPhones (first generation models being the exception) and any iPod made after 2006. In practice, an iPod Touch proves the best fit. Two 15W front speakers sit behind a black, soft-touch speaker grille, separated by a red LED display – also behind the grille – that shows the time (in standby) or the input you’re using (iPod, FM tuner, line-in, or music Bluetoothed from a phone or PC). Though it charges an iPhone or iPod sitting in its dock, the former must be in ‘airplane’ mode – a
mode that prevents you taking any calls while you’re listening to music – and the latter’s WiFi must be switched off before any music can be played from it. The power of its speakers impresses – they’re plenty enough to grace any living room – and are joined by something rare at this size and price; a 30W subwoofer. That helps lend music a dollop of bass, but subtly so, although using the credit card-sized remote to adjust treble and bass levels does prove tricky.
The FM tuner proves simple enough to operate, though we would expect a digital DAB tuner at this price, while a basic alarm clock with snooze, wakeup and sleep functions is useful – though a speaker system of this power and quality does seem overkill for a bedside table. PORSCHE In so many ways, the Cayman is the best handling and arguably the most practical sports car made by Porsche. Why then, asks Matthew Carter, are there so few around?
I
’ve never really understood why we sell so many convertibles in the UK: Our weather’s typically awful, so opportunities to lower the hood are few and far between. And there’s no denying that without a tin top overhead, a convertible is never going to be as structurally stiff as a coupé. I speak as a former convertible owner. At the time I bought my Boxster S, I had no choice. I wanted a Porsche but couldn’t stretch to a 911, so the soft top Boxster it was. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that car. It’s just that in the three years I owned it, I counted the number of times I drove it with the roof down on my fi ngers and toes. What a shame the Cayman hadn’t been around back then. The Cayman is essentially a hardtop Boxster. The running gear is the same, and the structure from below the waistline is virtually identical. But above, it’s a very different story.
In so many ways and in my humble opinion, the Cayman coupé is the best car Porsche makes. It’s smaller, lighter and more nimble than the 911 – and also a whole lot more exclusive – and, thanks to the way the engine is tucked behind the seats, a great deal more practical, too. Like the 911, it has a large boot at the front, but it also has a fair sized boot behind, accessed via the tailgate. This is a twoseater capable of carrying enough luggage for a fortnight’s holiday, rather than just for a dirty weekend. But the best thing about the Cayman is the way it goes. The positioning of the engine ahead of the rear wheels is perfect for quick direction changes, something further enhanced by the crisp steering. It’s not intimidating, while its high-speed stability is immeasurable. It’s also much more snug in winter, and generally quieter all year round than the Boxster. And, to these eyes at least, it’s
better looking than its soft top sister. Just as well built, though. The interior fabrics and fittings are top quality and the doors close with a reassuringly expensive clunk – something rivals like the Nissan 370Z can only dream about. So would I want a Cayman? Well yes, but not this one. The all-white body and the garish red wheels made the test Cayman appear something I was not (notwithstanding the ‘wicked wheels, man’ greetings from younger passers-by when it was parked). No, this one is not for me The fuel economy, however, for a performance car is simply astonishing, with 40 mpg completely achievable under most conditions. consumption, without having to sacrifice the ease of automatic transmission. Basically, gears one to six have a sports ratio and top speed is reached in sixth gear. The seventh gear has a long ratio and helps to reduce fuel consumption even further. Designed as pretty much two half gearboxes with a double wet clutch transmission, the flow of power from the engine is only ever transmitted through one half and one clutch at a time, while the next gear is preselected in the second half gearbox. During a gear change, therefore, a conventional shift no longer takes place. Instead, one clutch simply opens and the other closes at the same time. Gear changes can therefore take place within milliseconds. What does all this mean for you? Exactly what you would expect: uninterrupted driving. No, if I were to go for a Cayman it would need to be the beefier ‘S’ with 320
bhp from a 3.4-litre engine. To my mind, the Cayman, and especially the S, is the best car Porsche makes. The security and structural stiffness offered by the roof makes it more fun to drive, while the clever packaging makes it more practical. CALIFORNIA Hitting the open road from San Diego to San Francisco, Jenny White finally lives out her dream of an American road trip
E
ver since I first watched the film Thelma and Louise, I had fantasised about taking to the road in a convertible, wind in my hair and the open road in front of me. Minus murder and driving off a cliff, I wanted to discover the American wilderness and the unknown. Just me and pal going wherever took our fancy across the desert plane; booking into cheap motels as we went, and the possibility of running into a cowboy with the looks of Brad Pitt, pre-Angelina. So, by the time I finally got around to making my fantasy come true, a few things had changed in my desired road trip plans. Instead of going across America, I decided to go up. Route 1, from San Diego to San Francisco to be more precise, discovering the stunning Pacific view along the way. Then there was the idea of just hiring a car, hitting the road and staying wherever had a
vacancy. Ten years on since my fantasy began, and I need a little more security than that; or at least, my first five nights booked in a few nice hotels. And finally, my daydream of meeting a brawny cowboy along the way was put paid to by the fact that my travel companion was my boyfriend – but then, who wants a runaway cowboy anyway? SAN DIEGO As soon as we picked up our black Chrysler convertible and were told that the brakes were a bit dodgy (but it was nothing to worry about), I knew we were in for a good time. After a long flight, we decided to stay in San Diego for two nights to relax and catch up on our jetlag. Eight hours behind the UK, it took a couple of days to adjust but, having booked ourselves into the Ivy Hotel, which boasts the Envy rooftop club
and bar, we quickly found the perfect way to stay awake. The luxurious Ivy Hotel is situated in the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego, and is the perfect stylish boutique hotel, just blocks from the shops and restaurants as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art. If that all sounds like too much hard work, we discovered that every Sunday there is a rooftop pool party that sees the hunks and beauties of San Diego come to mingle and look at each other – very entertaining.

Our nearest beach was only 15 minutes from the hotel, and I know you will want to know if we saw any dolphins riding the surf, or even spotted a fin of a Great White. And actually, we did, at Sea World. Joining in with the chanting of, ‘Shamu! Shamu!’ we got soaked by the killer whales, entertained by the walruses, and mesmerised by the beauty and grace of the manatees. LOS ANGELES The drive from San Diego to LA is under two hours, so we took the day to explore Orange County – from Laguna Beach to Balboa Island to Newport Beach. Although there isn’t much in Balboa, it is worth driving around to see the quaint houses that are packed onto the three Balboa Islands. With approximately 3,000 residents living on just 0.2 square miles, this densely populated area boasts some of the most expensive homes.
Connected to the Newport mainland by two-lane bridges, we found a much more exciting way of crossing the water on the small, three-car ferryboats. For lunch we stopped at Newport Pier Seafood, a ramshackle restaurant that perches precariously over the sea at the end of Newport Pier. Proving that appearances can be deceptive, this place served the most succulent coconut prawns and tasty sushistyle seafood I have ever had. And with mini bottles of champagne on offer, I was glad I wasn’t the designated driver. Finally reaching LA, we settled into our room at the famous Standard Downtown, and were happy to be off the road and out of the car. Although certainly the best way to travel Route 1, a must is to remember the sun cream when in a convertible, and be prepared to acquire some odd tan marks – seatbelt shaped! The Standard Downtown is known for its rooftop bar and is a favourite after-work drinking hole with the locals. Situated in the middle of the financial district, you are surrounded by lofty office buildings while you relax and sip on a cocktail. At night when the buildings are all lit up, it makes for a dramatic atmosphere. Moving away from the high-rise buildings, we ventured to Beverly Hills and booked ourselves into the London West Hollywood. Perched in the Hollywood Hills just steps from the legendary Sunset Strip, this modern hotel oozed Hollywood glamour. The combination of a rooftop pool with panoramic views, dining by Gordon Ramsey and rooms bigger than my house back home, made this a very luxurious stay. Known as the City of Angels, LA is the second largest city in America and four days wasn’t enough to cover it all, but we gave it a good go. Window shopping on Rodeo Drive, Chinatown, Kodak Theatre, City Hall
and, of course, up into the hills to see the Hollywood sign. And although not known for their varied cuisine, we struck lucky with some of best meals I have ever had. A quick lunch at The Ivy for some celeb spotting turned into a two-hour lunch of sumptuous Italian food, whilst dinner at The Bazaar at the SLS Hotel, was a true culinary experience with a vibrant mix of sophisticated modern and traditional tapasstyle cuisine. Cotton candy foie gras, “Philly cheesesteak” (Air bread, cheddar and Wagyu beef) and “Corn on the cob” (Baby corn, corn nuts and popcorn shoots). And with a whole separate dessert room offering every type of cake, pudding and tart you could imagine, it is worth having to be put on the guest list and wait our turn for afters. Then there was the much talked-about XIV restaurant and club that we ventured to on our last night in LA, and this again offered a stunning array of food and cocktails. Housed in a windowless box on Sunset Strip, XIV is the perfect place to head to for a big night out, as it is surrounded by bars and nightclubs to keep everyone entertained. Any celebrities, I hear you ask? Well, you can’t come to Hollywood without spotting a few, and we did a pretty good job of being in the right place at the right time. We shopped with rapper Kanye West and ate pizza with Quentin Tarantino. SANTA MONICA AND SANTA BARBARA After partying in LA, I was in search of rural tranquillity and, as we drove through Malibu, following Route 1 to Santa Monica, with the sea always in view, it began to feel like the road trip had really begun. Santa Monica is nicknamed the Home of the Homeless, and it was clear where it got its name from. Although we found a lovely hotel to stay in which overlooked the beach (The Georgian Hotel), Santa Monica felt like Weston-super-Mare but with sunshine, and one night here was enough. Eating Nachos and drinking bottled beers in our motel in Santa Barbara, I was so glad we had finally booked into a Thelma and Louise-style motel room (Marina Beach Hotel). Santa Barbara is often referred to as the ‘American Riviera’ and is a popular tourist destination, offering an array of motels along the beach with varying prices. The picturesque town lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the sea, and offers holidaymakers the chance to surf, sail and hire bikes to meander through the wide, spacious streets. 63

CAMBRIA With the town comprising of a single street, lined with stores sporting signs that creak and which mainly sell local art, Cambria is located right on the Pacific Ocean with dramatic rocky cliffs and stunning, sprawling beaches. The weather is a lot cooler from Cambria up to San Francisco, and in the evening a jumper is needed as the sea air blows across the coastline. Watching the spectacular sunset across the ocean and walking along the seafront in the morning, with surfers riding the early morning waves, was all that we did in this sleepy town. However, the scenery is so beautiful and everything so quiet that you won’t want to do anything else. We stayed at the Sand Pebbles Inn, and had a quaint room with a fireplace, canopy bed and small terrace, which overlooked the ocean. It was one of the more memorable places that we had visited so far on our trip, purely for its natural beauty. MONTEREY On our journey to Monterey we stopped at a spot where we were told we would be guaranteed to see elephant seals. Spying only a few bobbing heads in the opal coloured ocean, I was somewhat disappointed. That is, until we turned a beach corner and there, basking on the beach was a massive colony of these large mammals, flipping cooling sand on themselves and each other. Hunted to the brink of extinction by the end of 19th century, it is only recently that numbers have recovered and it was a true joy to see them wobbling in the sunshine. The journey to Monterey is where the Pacific Coast Highway really becomes breathtaking. From the elephant seal colony at Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, the highway winds itself through the cliffs of Big Sur and then across the scenic Bixby Creek Bridge, a reinforced concrete arch with a 320foot span that passes over the Bixby Creek gorge, and the Rocky Creek Bridge. With views of rugged canyons and steep sea cliffs, granite shorelines and windswept cypress
was surprisingly warmer. Staying in the historic downtown Sonoma Plaza, we booked into the humorously named El Dorado Hotel. Sounding as though it would be a dilapidated hotel straight out of a Clint Eastwood Western, it turned out to be a sophisticated and contemporary boutique hotel that possessed a Michelinrecommended restaurant. Arriving on a Wednesday, we discovered to our great excitement that all wines served in the hotel restaurant and bar were half price mid-week, and so a relaxing day of eating and drinking ensued. Not far from our hotel, we struck (liquid) gold: a large winery, no less, and perfectly within stumbling distance from our accommodation. Sebastiani Vineyards and Winery focuses on crafting small lots of super-premium wines from the growing regions of Sonoma County. It is one of California’s most highly praised and awarded wineries for its Bordeaux and Burgundian varietals – a delightful and tasty experience. trees, majestic redwood forests and pristine coastline, the urge to do nothing but sit back and enjoy the ride was overwhelming, as were the views. Pleasant bends and curves made the trip along the Big Sur Coast Highway an unforgettable experience.You can complete this itinerary in a day, which is what we did, but high-quality lodging and camping areas are available if you feel like a day isn’t enough to see it all. Once in Monterey, we relaxed with a meal in one of the local eateries on the seafront, and mused over our spectacular drive. In its early days, Monterey was the capital of the Spanish territory of California, while Monterey Bay was an important port. The city displays its historical importance with beautifully restored historic buildings and a “Path of History” walking tour. SONOMA By this point I was craving a little more heat, and so we headed inland to the wine country of Sonoma, where the temperature
SAN FRANCISCO The lure of the big city did win us over eventually, and we drove for the final time to San Francisco, one hour from the wine region. The famous Golden Gate Bridge suddenly rises up in front of you as you drive towards the city, and looks as though it has naturally evolved out of the hills. We had heard about the fog that looms around the bridge and the bay, but until you experience it, it is hard to imagine such a bizarre phenomenon. We drove and walked across the bridge, and at some points you could only see a few feet in front of you – and then suddenly it would clear, prompting the tourists to get out their cameras to try and get their prize shot. We did the usual tourist things such as visiting Alcatraz, taking pictures of the famous ‘Painted Ladies’ houses, and walking up and down the rolling hills of the city. And when it came to fly home I was sad to say goodbye to the west coast and all the sights that had helped make my road trip vision come alive. ■

Felicity J Lord estate agency experiences post-election surge

ith a coalition Government now in place and the election period over there is a reclaimed sense of stability in the housing market which has led to a surge of property coming onto the market, according to Felicity J Lord estate agents. The rise in activity in response to the election announcement has been welcomed by Felicity J Lord in London. Divisional Sales Director Nigel Seabridge said: “It seems that confidence is returning to the housing market with people no longer postponing their decision to buy and sell. “Since the formation of the new Government we have also experienced a flood of phone calls to the branch, plus a large increase in traffic to our website. “In particular, we are seeing a flurry of web-driven activity during the lunchtime period and between 7pm and 9.30pm. When we surveyed our customers recently, they told us one of the reasons they chose us to sell their property was because they can talk to us up to 10pm.” Even the uncertainty over the future of Home Information Packs is failing to dent interest. Although the new Government has confirmed it will be scrapping them, it hasn’t yet announced the timescale to do so.
