Every month I have the glorious job of meeting interesting and motivating residents, famous and nonfamous, who equally make my job easy by helping make the area the lively and vibrant place it is.

This month has been no exception when it comes to meeting remarkable locals. Long-term resident and charming thespian, Sam West talks passionately to me about local politics and why almost two decades after moving to the area he is still a fan of Islington. Currently starring in the West End show Enron, Sam reveals why he believes audiences are flooding to see the show based around the unusual subject of the financial world and what it took for him to prepare for his role as Jeffery Skilling, CEO of Enron. Another inspirational local we chat to this month in My Designer Life, is Tallat Mukhtar, Creative Director of Tiles Etc. Having given up a lucrative job in the City, he boldly followed his passion into the interior design world and set up shop selling exclusive tiles in North London. Following suit for the girls, we meet five inspirational business women who reveal how they changed their lives by setting up their own businesses in the local area and how they have made themselves into truly successful entrepreneurs. A ROUND-UP OF WHAT ISLINGTON COUNCIL IS DOING FOR THE BOROUGH…

CRISIS SERVICES FOR ISLINGTON Nearly a million women in North London will benefit from a new rape crisis centre which will be set up by the end of 2010, following a commitment by Islington Council. Islington Council was chosen by the GLA to lead the project with Westminster Council because of its experience and reputation in co-ordinating outreach services for women. Islington and Westminster councils will receive £370,000 from the Mayor of London to set up the services with the support of five other north London councils.

FUNDERSTORM Young people in Islington are getting the chance to pitch for up to £20,000 to fund a youth project of their choice. Funderstorm – a new initiative launched by Islington Council’s Listen Up team this week – aims to use social media and exciting game show events to engage young people in helping to manage budgets and make decisions that will shape the future of Islington services. Last month’s launch event highlighted priorities including the need for more activities aimed at girls and role models for young people in the care system. Ideas included a gym for young people, and an improved system for transporting young people to and from youth activities.

Islington Council has released details of a further 28 vacancies on its apprentice scheme. Residents can apply for the new ‘earn while you learn’ jobs in an array of council departments including social services, highways and finance. With salaries of between £15,036 and £18,732 as well as academic fees paid for, high demand for the vacancies is expected. The scheme is open to all residents of Islington school-leavers who are concerned they lack the experience or qualifications to get ahead in their careers. There is no age limit on the scheme.

Residents in EC1 are enjoying the benefits of over £2 million investment in the brand new 3Corners Centre, offering a host of services for all ages. Go WeSt! Currently starring in hit West End show, Enron, Islington resident, Sam West reveals to Jenny White how he prepared for his latest role and why he thinks the show is such a success

S

am West has been an Islington resident for the best part of 20 years; still living in the same house that he first moved into all those years ago and in the same road as his best friend from university. “I grew up in South London in Wandsworth; I wanted to leave my parents behind but not too far behind,” smiles Sam. “I actually live in a road that I discovered because my then girlfriend’s best friend lived in it; it wasn’t until I got to university that I realised that my own best friend lived in the same road and still does.” A committed socialist, the actor-director admits to admiring both of the local Labour MPs, Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry and still loves the area despite the changes in the borough over the last two decades. Nevertheless, he tends to avoid the south end of Angel on Saturday night. Instead, he can been found most Sundays at Gem on Upper Street sharing a bottle of wine with his partner, playwright Laura Wade and discussing the day’s bird watching events (a favourite hobby of the couples). He regrets however that a lot of the useful and charming shops have been replaced by generic high street chains. “There used to be shops that used to sell milk and tea towels. But now you have shops which sell things such as church

candles at incredibly expensive prices which is lovely if you have the money and sometimes I do; sometimes as an actor you do quite well and sometimes you don’t and it’s then when Islington looks a bit like an insult. As much as I do like the area, sometimes it tries too hard,” observes Sam. “I like it as a place from which to live and work in London. I have no complaints and I really don’t ever want to move but that doesn’t stop me from thinking that sometimes Islington should just give less of a f*@k and not take itself so seriously.” Hailing from theatre royalty – his father is Timothy West, his mother Prunella Scales – Sam admits that when he first started out he felt the pressure to live up to the precedent set my his parents. However, with a career spanning over 20 years Sam admits that he now feels established enough in his own right not to feel any demands to prove himself. After giving up the idea of studying physics and becoming an astrophysicist – ‘I didn’t have the maths’ – he followed in his parents’ footsteps. His big break came, when aged 26, he

got the part of Leonard Bast in the Merchant Ivory film adaptation of E.M. Foster’s novel Howards End, opposite Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter and Anthony Hopkins. To date, Sam has carved out a career that has combined classical theatre (including the title roles in Richard II and Hamlet) with prestigious movies (Iris, Jane Eyre, Notting Hill and Van Helsing) as well as TV and radio. Currently starring in the hit West End show Enron, there has been much comment on how this character is a far cry from Sam’s usual Merchant Ivory and ‘damaged toff’ roles. “In terms of telly, I probably played a few too many posh people but in terms of film there is only really one thing that people have seen me in and that is Howards End, in which I played

a middle class clerk. But because it is a Merchant Ivory film people go, ‘Oh you were playing the posh suit.’ Well, no actually I was playing a South London clerk. And now I am playing an American everyone is offering me American roles – it’s very strange,” exclaims Sam in his deep, smooth voice which becomes slightly over-enunciated when he becomes irritated. “People seem very shocked to hear that I can do an American accent; I don’t know why, I am actor, of course I can. I knew I could do one, I put it on my CV, did they think I was lying? I have learnt that you have to take roles sometimes to show people what you can do. As an actor you have an idea of what you can do but actually that is much less important then what other people think you can.”

“I wouldn’t recommend being versatile as a passport to success. It makes life much more interesting but it generally doesn’t make you successful,” explains the actor who doesn’t consider himself famous enough to be able to choose work and still worries about where the next job will come from, despite the fact he has worked constantly for the last ten years. “In order to be successful you have to do one thing and not mind people asking you to do it forever. But I don’t like that, I don’t think it is interesting and I think it is a slight contradiction of what it means to be an actor.” In Enron, Sam plays the part of Jeffrey Skilling, the CEO of the giant US corporation that went bankrupt in 2001 as the result of an accounting fraud and who is presently three years into a 24 year jail sentence. Skilling is the Machiavellian charmer from Illinois who had never run a company before Enron but discovered that as long as the share price stayed high, investors would continue to pump money into the company. Despite their difference in politics and general way of thinking, Sam spent a lot of time learning about the world of finance and understanding the jargon behind derivatives. He watched footage of Skilling and has recordings of his voice on his iPod to help him understand what made the man. “The only way to play someone who is so different from you and make the character believable is by not wanting to play him as a bastard. I have empathy for him even though I don’t agree with his view of the world. I don’t think Capitalism is a sustainable system, I think it is exploitative, unfair and unaccountable and I hate it but you can’t play someone like you think they are wrong, that is commentating and that is not allowed,” says Sam. “You can’t play a Nazi like you think Nazi’s are bad, you can’t play a paedophile like paedophile’s are disgusting and you can’t play a serial killer like you think they are wrong. However, I do think there is a great moral dimension to this; I wouldn’t play a Nazi in a film that says Nazism is good but to play a person to the hilt is absolutely my job.” “It is fascinating playing someone so far removed from my character because the devil gets the best tunes. Skilling is not exactly a baddie and I think it is important to say he thought he was doing the right thing – but then so did Hitler,” laughs Sam. “You have to try and understand why these

people do the things they do in order to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The show has been extended due to popular demand and for Sam it’s the greatest part he has ever played, with the exception of Hamlet, of course! The success of the play, Sam believes, is down to clever writing from talented playwright, Lucy Prebble and has a lot to do with the timing. But with the unusual backdrop of the financial world were there initial worries that people may be put off? “I think when we first started we had our doubts about a play that seemed to be based

on fairly complicated accountancy but thanks to our brilliantly talented 28 year old writer, who has stood by her commandment to herself, which is: ‘Thou shalt not bore’, the play is thrilling,” explains Sam. He adds that he chose the play partly because he wanted to work with Lucy and partly because it is a ‘stonking’ part. “I think part of the success is down to the timing due to the current (economic) climate we are in. A lot of people don’t understand this subject and simply because of that they wanted to come and see it because they felt they should understand. One of the reasons we are in this mess is because a lot of people were allowed to talk this impenetrable language freely which we didn’t understand and it is up to us to understand what they are doing.” Sam recalls a list of ambitions that at the start of his career he set out to achieve and it seems that he has ticked them all off. “I wanted to play Hamlet, appear in Doctor Who, learn to juggle five balls and read the shipping forecast and I have done all that – well, I only read the shipping forecast in a play although I would like to do it properly on Radio 4!” says Sam. Luckily for us there is still plenty he still wants to do and along with Sam, we wait with baited breath to find out what his next role will be. n Enron is at the Noel Coward Theatre, London W1 until 7 August. Full of character, Church Street – and the wider area of Stoke Newington – is one of the most diverse areas of north London, boasting a multi-cultural community including many Irish, Jewish, Asian, Turkish, and AfroCaribbean groups. The church of St. Mary is set in a picturesque churchyard complete with beautiful eighteenth century tombstones, whilst Abney Park Cemetery attracts visitors to the dramatic Victorian Gothic graveyard, edged with mature woodland and rich in wildlife. Notably, the Abney Park Cemetery took the place of Bunhill Fields as a burial ground for dissenters and non-conformists – and if you look carefully, you can find the grave of General Booth (founder of the Salvation Army) here. Other open spaces close to Church Street include Clissold Park and Victoria Park, both popular with families and sports clubs. When the sun comes out, residents and visitors alike head to Clissold Park which boasts a green 54-acre expanse complete with tennis courts, duck ponds, an enclosure of deer (again, surprising for London) and a delightful pavilion cafe. Also, close by to Clissold Park is the recently renovated Stoke Newington Town Hall. Beautifully restored back to its former glory, the hall which

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK: Rich in culture, diversity and personality, Church Street boasts a wonderful collection of international restaurants and grocers lining both Church Street and the High Street. Don’t miss Rasa, which is the original branch of London’s mini-chain of Keralan restaurants. The locals love it and it’s a great place to find cheap vegetarian dishes and home-made breads. For those looking to go a little up-market try Alistair’s Brasserie. This newly opened restaurant serves modern British cuisine cooked and prepared by a Michelin-starred chef; excellent, mouth-watering food, great value, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you are a fan of Sushi and enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine, then head to Oishiii for first class food. Celebrating their first birthday this month, Oishii is already well-established as a local gem. WHAT TO DO AND SEE: Church Street is well known in north London for its excellent shopping; wander between stylish boutiques, eccentric craft shops and local delicatessens/grocers. One of the most popular attractions is the Saturday Stoke Newington Farmers’ Market on Church Street. All the produce at the market is organic, biodynamic or wild – the first farmers’ market in the UK to ensure this. It really is a local market, as all produce is sold by the people who grew, reared or produced it themselves and who come from within 100 miles of Hackney. Participating farms include Stocks Farm in Essex, Ripple Farm and Perrycourt Farm, both in Kent, who bring greenhouse salad leaves, aubergines and peppers, organically farmed trout, lamb and chicken. For excellent quality food (and a small victory over the super market giants) this is one of the most enjoyable and social features of Church Street. Independent shops on Church Street include local favourites such as Early Bird; a family run business which offers an array of cards and gifts. Askew is the first shop you will stumble upon when heading up Church Street from Islington; and you will always be welcomed with open arms by the friendly and helpful staff while looking for the perfect pair of glasses or sunglasses. RUNNING MAN Mark Herron, Consultant Foot & Ankle surgeon at The Wellington Hospital shares his knowledge and advice on running injuries in anticipation of the London Marathon Once people get into distance running it seems to become addictive. Runners are used to ‘running through’, ignoring many aches and pains, so Nick Cullen (fellow consultant foot and ankle surgeon) and I appreciate that by the time a runner comes through our doors symptoms are reasonably serious. Although there are no specific running injuries, problems are generally due to the effects of

says Nick. “If the shoes feel too tight, don’t buy them as there is no such thing as a ‘breakin period’ for running shoes.” At The Wellington Hospital’s Foot & Ankle Unit we work closely with specialist physiotherapists around London as well as specialist running coaches like Ben Pochee of LGN Wellbeing to make sure runners get the advice and treatment they need. In runners, one of the common problem areas is the Achilles tendon. Most patients know it’s their Achilles but have little idea of the processes affecting the tendon or that a lot of options exist before any operation need be considered. The two main chronic problems it suffers are either a superficial inflammation (tendonitis) or deeper seated ‘wear and tear’ of the tendon (tendonosis).

repetitive high impact activity on the bones, joints and soft tissues. Injuries can be linked to pathological pain (due to acute or chronic injury), and mechanical pain (due to pushing physical tolerance). The latter is a common problem and if you’re going to take to distance running seriously, it’s important that you do so gradually with a proper conditioning programme, advice on technique and the correct shoes. “Have both feet measured every time you purchase shoes”

If it is wear and tear, then the tendon tends to have a discreet and tender swelling, with normal and pain-free tendon above and below it. In either case the 75% of people respond to either a course of physiotherapy or temporary immobilisation in an Aircast boot. It can take six weeks before symptoms start to improve. If it’s important to have as little time away from sport as possible, then ultrasoundguided injections of steroid (or a patient’s own blood cells) can be used. Another common complaint is the stress fracture. Eventually pain is severe enough to prevent running, and once a stress fracture has been diagnosed, a period of rest is advised and with a pneumatic walking boot. Often surgery

is not needed but the optimal management of stress fractures is always prevention. There are many simple things that can be done to prevent injury, such as joining a running club or enrolling the help of an experienced runner to set realistic targets and training schedules. Running distances should be increased gradually and ‘cross training’ is useful, where running is alternated with other forms of cardiovascular exercise. The PerfecT Lair Jenny White discovers that the return of the traditional British pub comes with a few contemporary surprises

cott Malaugh is the kind of guy that if you were to spend hours mulling over a pint or two you would want him as company. Animated, sociable and with humorous tales to share, the Belfast born pub landlord of the Fox and Anchor, is everything that a good landlord should be. A pig trotter’s throw from Smithfield Market, the Fox and Anchor has all the hallmarks of a Victorian pub – patterned tiles adorning the porch, heavy mahogany doors, etched glass, a brass and mahogany bar and leather banquettes lining one wall. Black and white photos of burly butches from the local meat market decorate the walls

and like any true traditional London pub the bar is topped with jars of pickled eggs. A product of the Malmaison hotel empire, the Fox and Anchor sees the company branching out and doing their own take on a British pub. But, make no mistake, this pub may be owned by a chain but it oozes character and with the help of Scott and his staff, it has become a popular tavern in the area serving simple British food and real ales. “There has been a pub here for over 110 years; I have been here since I opened it with the Malmaison group in November 2007. They told me what they wanted and I made it happen with their help,” explains Scott, who is dressed in a smart matching waistcoat and trouser suit, with a vibrant turquoise

tie. “The concept is really, without sounding too corny, the return of the British pub which has got lost in recent years. It is difficult to find somewhere that sells ales; instead you often find that pubs will only have one type of ale on tap. Most of the market is saturated with brands like Fosters, Stella, Carling and you walk in and the staff don’t know what they are selling because the brand is what they are selling. Britain to me is like what France is to wine, there is so much out there that you can explore but big breweries have killed the trade off. So the concept is really to reinvent the British pub, bring a bit of country living to the city.” A radical departure from the boutique hotel, The Fox and Anchor also boasts six bedrooms above the old fashioned pub. With burnished copper baths and fabric headboards, each room, named after nearby areas, make a distinct reference to their historic Victorian roots while at the same time are unashamedly contemporary. During the week the rooms are occupied by city workers and at weekends it’s the ideal romantic retreat. And with a pub which has a licence to serve thirsty and hungry traders from 6am, this unique waterhole really does cater for

everyone. “We get a mix of boozers and those who want to eat at lunchtime, the majority are city workers at that time and then in the afternoon we get a lot of tourists and randoms off the street looking for a pint,” chuckles Scott. “There are a big mix of foodies and those who appreciate their drink, be it whisky or ale and in the evening we gets locals from Islington and the surrounding environs.” Having grown up working in his father’s Murphy’s Law pub in Miami, Scott discovered a natural ability to get along with punters and know how to create the ideal balance between quality service and providing the perfect home away from home for customers. He gave up a marketing and advertising degree at the University of Iowa after the first year – because he felt there was nothing they could teach him – and he moved back home to Belfast, where his career really took off. Working for fine-dining restaurant The Four Winds and then Malmasion group, Scott trained as a sommelier and has applied the top quality service of his past employment to the pub. “People’s expectations especially in the City are no different from a finedining restaurant and the level of service and standards is just as high but the atmosphere is all about having fun,” smiles Scott. “People go out to places like the Fox and Anchor to have fun so why can’t you have fun while providing the service?” So, after many years in the business, what is the key to running a successful pub in an area full of great restaurants and bars? “This pub works because it is all about having the right person in charge of it; it is about personality which is something that I have, as do all my staff who help me make this place what it is,” explains Scott. “However, as well as personality you do need a product to show off.You can be the biggest show off in the world but if you have nothing

Smoked ham hock, calcannon and parSley Sauce… METHOD:

IngrEDIEnTS: 6 smoked ham hock 2 onions 2 carrots 1 leek 3 celery stick

1 Soak the hock over night or a min 6-7 hours. 2 Put them in a pan of stock, bring to boil and remove the scum. 3 Add the peeled rough-cut vegetables and simmer for 3-4 hours until cooked. 4 Reduce the stock by half (but keep a little bit of stock back to use when re-heat the hocks at the end. 5 Add the butter to a new pan and melt. Add the flour and cook until it turns a blond colour (not brown), then gradually add the stock, whisking slowly all the time. 6 Add chopped English parsley and adjust the seasoning to taste. Mix in the juice of half a lemon. 7 Make mash as usual, and add cooked Savoy cabbage.

Bay leaf/thyme Water or chicken stock. 1 bunch English parsley Mash 25 gram Butter 25gram 1 lemon

TO SErvE Re-heat the hocks in the remaining stock. Warm the mash with extra butter and spoon on one half of the plate. Place the hock on the other half and spoon the parsley sauce all over it. Be generous!!!

Carrie Mitchell discovers that Upper Street’s newest Italian restaurant is a lot less trendy than it looks - in a very good way

A

s soon as I laid eyes on Café la Divina, I thought I had it sussed. With a shiny moped parked in the window, vintage movie posters adorning the walls, and plump leather couches, Islington’s newest Italian had the understated cool look down to a T. Which is why, when I stepped inside, I was expecting the same decidedly modern approach from the staff, the menu, and the atmosphere. Mercifully, I was wrong. Immediately welcomed with a warm smile by the friendly young Italian who’d be our waiter for the evening, we were shown to our table and presented with the menu. This is when I realised the place was no young pretender. There were four pages to that menu – four pages full of rustic Italian dishes, all cooked to authentic family recipes without an ounce of pretension anywhere in sight. Everything sounded wonderful from the Crespolina (rolled crepes stuffed with spinach and ricotta) to the Scallopine (thin slices of veal baked with cheese and asparagus) - choosing my meal was not going to be easy. While I hummed and hawed over whether to go for pizza, pasta, or something from the grill; my dining companion kept things simple, ordering a classic Caprese salad and the Toscana pizza.

Decision finally reached, we got stuck into the Pinot Grigio and munched on olives and chunks of tasty Italian bread with balsamic and olive oil. Next to us, a party had arrived and as they took their seats at a long table decorated with balloons and streamers, we were pleased to note that the chatter coming from their direction was most definitely accented in Italian – a family of actual Italians in an Italian restaurant… This could only be a good sign. And of course it was. My starter of beef Carpaccio was fresh, tasty, and generously portioned with wafer thin slices of silky meat topped with rocket, parmesan, and a scattering of artichokes. Across the table, the Caprese was met with similar noises of approval and looked fantastic with ruby red tomatoes alongside thick slices of buffalo mozzarella. The main event was similarly well received – a steaming bowl of linguine marinara for myself and a huge stonebaked pizza topped with Parma ham, fresh rocket leaves, and parmesan for my guest. Tucking into my pasta, I was pleased to discover all manner of fresh seafood in there – fleshy prawns, huge mussels, and meaty chunks of fish all adding bite and flavour to the simple tomato sauce. It was so good I even managed to resist asking my companion for a slice of pizza. Afterwards, we made a brave attempt at dessert but were finally defeated by the chocolate chip cheesecake and tiramisu as we began the inevitable slide into a carb coma. It was time to lie horizontal on the couch and recover from our overindulgence…but not before I arranged to have the leftover pizza boxed up to take with me. Tallat Mukhtar, co-founder and Creative Director of Tiles Etc reveals how his life has changed since leaving his career in the City and explains how the pursuit of his dream career in interiors has given him a new direction

L

eaving a career in the City, Tallat realised there was a niche in the market for high quality tiles. Opening his business, Tiles Etc, he went from supplying a few local architects to providing tiles for high profile projects such as the Gherkin, the Emirates Stadium and the East London Line. He owns two showrooms in Islington and offers a comprehensive range of tiles for both commercial and private interior projects.

BUSINESS Tiles Etc offers contemporary, modern, designer tiles. Our company strapline is: “designer

tiling, interior styling”. Which pretty much sums up what we do, we offer our clients a designer tile product, all the while tailoring it to suit their home or interior style. We very quickly realised most people appreciate, quality, value and good design. Tiles Etc came about because I could not find the types of tiles I wanted in the UK. In 2002 I was developing some loft apartments in Shoreditch and wanted to use tiles which I had seen in Italian homes and hotels. As they weren’t around in the UK, I started importing them by the pallet load from Italian factories. As time progressed, I realised that I was not the only one who appreciated such products and discovered there was a niche in the market. So, I started sourcing them for others. My big break came when Channel 4 filmed one of my property projects in Shoreditch for their Property Ladder series. I was working in the City at the time as an Equity Derivatives dealer. While working there I was developing some loft apartments in an old factory. It was quite a critical time in my life, as I would have an Options Broker on one line, while I having a plumber on the phone in my other hand! I had to make a decision, and I followed my own path, I left the City and started developing. Channel 4 caught all this on film, which was quite daunting. However, the exposure I got from the show led to Tiles Etc being founded. People saw the show and started asking where I got the tiles from. As an entrepreneur, I realised there was a market here and started the business with my older brother, Tahir. My design background is from my heart! I was always into design, in particular, interiors. However, I never followed it formally and to be honest, it was always a regret in my life. Even though, I have no formal training, I understand design very well and I’m able to advise my clients accordingly.

My interior style is very smart, contemporary modern styling. Even though it’s not minimalist, I do believe that less is more. My work is inspired by all that I see around me. InspIratIon My interior peeves are products which try to pass themselves off as designer, just because

they look a bit different. Normally, they are cheap in quality, cheap in design and cheap in manufacture too. My interior tip is keep it simple! As far as tiles go – if you have a small bathroom, which most Londoner’s do, then use a larger tile. It creates the illusion of space. If you use a small tile in a constrained space, it crowds it out, which makes it feel even smaller. What I love about my job is the fact that everyday day is different. Once I broke free from the shackles of working in an office, I discovered the greatness of London. This really is a great city, the diversity and energy of life is amazing. After I went out on my own, my circles suddenly became much bigger and I was meeting people from all walks of life. People really inspire me and I learn a lot from them, so having a business where I deal with the public is great for me. I’m a real people person, I love meeting my customers and helping them with their designs. My future plans are to continue with the business, develop it and grow. I know I have a product and service which people appreciate, so it’s only natural to do so. I started the business with a large vision to open more stores around London and beyond. As a result, I’m always looking for good people to join my staff , I’m a firm believer that good staff make a good business – if people think they fit our bill, they should simply give me a shout!

Home I couldn’t live without the support and help from my family. My brother and business partner, Tahir, who puts up with my craziness and makes it all happen for me. And my lovely wife, Lucy, who never ever gives up on me, everyday telling me that I can do it and fills me with love and confidence. It’s amazing what you can achieve with a bit of love and confidence! The last book I read was My Friend Leonard by James Frey. My wife gave it to me – it’s a beautiful memoir and very inspirational and touching. My signature drink is tea! I swear this leaf must have divine influences! There’s nothing that can’t be sorted out with a good cup of tea. My favourite place to hang out in is a new club and bar just opened in Shoreditch called Avalon. It’s a crazy little place with a great atmosphere. The fact that it’s a converted Chinese brothel only adds to its intrigue. I will be DJing there regularly which is very exciting! My personal interior style is timeless. As I have a property business running alongside Tiles Etc. I’m very careful to make sure that my styling will not date in the near future. SECOND TIME LUC K Alfa Romeo has a long and unenviable record of producing ‘nearly’ cars. The original MiTo was one such but, says Matthew Carter, the new Mark II version is much closer to the mark

E

very enthusiast with an ounce of highoctane fuel in their veins wants Alfa Romeo to succeed. The company has a genuine heritage. It celebrates its centenary this year and it provided one Enzo Ferrari with his first racing car. Without Alfa there would be no Prancing Horse. But Alfa has been living on past glories for too long. Its recent road cars have been good without being exceptional, in every case dynamically inferior to rivals, especially those from Germany. The Brera, Spider and 159 are ‘nearly’ cars: nearly great to drive,

nearly great to own, but ultimately not as good as the equivalent BMW or Audi. Sadly when it was launched last year, the MiTo (a contraction of Milano and Torino, apparently) also missed an open goal. MiTo was Alfa’s first small car in decades. It was stylish, well equipped and highly desirable on paper, but less so on the open road. In fact, those early cars were a huge disappointment. The steering was lifeless, the handling odd, the performance OK rather than stellar. It looked good – even though one rival car designer reckons its ‘droopy’

eyes makes it the saddest looking car on the road today – but overall it was yet another nearly car from the Italian car maker. The criticisms clearly hurt. Here we are, just 12 months down the line with a re-engineered MiTo that aims to right those wrongs. While the looks haven’t changed (and passenger space in the rear remains supermini tight) there are new engines under the bonnet and major modifications to the steering, suspension and brakes. There’s a new top-of-the-range, too, the 170 bhp Cloverleaf. One hundred and seventy horses – Alfa’s very own cavallino rampante – is mighty impressive from an engine that displaces just 1368cc, but this is no ordinary engine. As well as being turbocharged, it uses what parent Fiat calls MultiAir, complex technology that allows the engine to breathe far more efficiently. The result is a formidable power output and impressive performance: it’ll sprint to 60 mph from rest in under 7.5 seconds and has a top speed of 136 mph. But – and this is the important bit – the engine’s efficiency means it doesn’t guzzle gas. Helped by a slick six-speed gearbox and Stop/Start technology which cuts the engine when the vehicle is stationary, the combined cycle figure is 47.1 mpg, while the CO2 emissions are a reasonable 139 g/km: cake, owned and eaten – the MultiAir engine is superb. So that’s the performance box ticked. What about the rest of the car? The Cloverleaf – a tag that has long signified Alfa’s performance models and in the MiTo’s case is announced via a large four-leaf clover badge gratuitously glued onto both front wings – has active suspension. Although the basic chassis layout remains as before, subtle changes have sharpened its responses, while adaptive damping, a first for a supermini, constantly reads the road to tune handling and grip to match driver inputs: stiffer when the car is pressing on, softer when pootling around town. The steering? Well, despite Alfa’s claims to have modified it, the electric power steering is still a little lifeless… at least in the ‘N’ setting of its three mode ‘DNA’ system. DNA is an electronic driving dynamics control with three settings: ‘D’ stands for Dynamic, ‘N’ for Normal and ‘A’ for All-weather. The idea is that if it’s icy outside, you stick the car in ‘A’ to help control wheelspin. If you’re just popping to the shops

use ‘N’, switching to ‘D’ when the road opens out and you can enjoy much quicker throttle response, sharper steering and stiffer suspension settings. In my book, however, ‘N’ should stand for Never rather than Normal: in this the default setting, engine reactions are sluggish, steering feel closer to a wooden spoon in treacle and handling lethargic. The first thing any MiTo driver will do after starting the engine is flick the DNA switch to D… which begs the question why bother fitting it in the first place. And while we’re on the subject of complaints, Alfa has a cheek charging extra for most paint finishes. Fair enough if it’s metallic, but the only no-cost paint finish is black. If you want your MiTo in white, yellow or even, wait for it, Alfa red, that’ll be another £410 thanks. In fact, by the time you added a few desirable extras such as sat nav and a decent sound system you’ll be looking at a final bill approaching £20k. That’s either a lot for a supermini or a fair price for an Alfa that, at last, largely lives up to the promise of the badge. Despite it all, I’ll go for the second option. n

JUNKIE F We catch up with jewellery designer and gallery owner Lesley Craze to find out more about her work and upcoming exhibitions

She set up her own gallery over 25 years ago and today presents cutting edge exhibitions showcasing the very best of modern British and international jewellery design. We headed over to the gallery on Clerkenwell Green to find out more about the upcoming COLLECT exhibition and the future of British design talent.


culture What draws you to art and design and why did you decide to make a career out of it? A silversmith who had a stall on Camden Lock made a bangle for my daughter, Janna in 1975. I went to her workshop to collect it and was so inspired by what I saw there that soon after I gave in my notice to my job as a full time teacher to take on a workshop of my own. When did you set up the gallery and how has it changed? In 1984 I set up the gallery on Essex Road in Islington to promote and sell the work of British jewellery designer makers. I then moved to the current location on Clerkenwell Green. Since 1990 the gallery has expanded, firstly into 35 Clerkenwell Green, enabling the display of both precious and mixed media jewellery. Later 33 Clerkenwell Green became an additional space, successfully selling innovative contemporary textiles. We now use this particular space as a changing exhibition space with many interesting exhibitions. Over the years the artists on display at the gallery have become more and more international and more cutting edge. Why do you choose to include a range of art forms rather than specialise in one? The gallery’s specialism has always been jewellery but we do represent the related disciplines of metalwork and textiles. These disciplines cross-over with jewellery in terms of technique and/or application. Can you tell us more about the artists currently showing at the gallery? The gallery promotes work by more than 100 British and international designers exhibiting work from both established names and recent graduates. The gallery hosts four to five major exhibitions a year with regular private views and occasional evening champagne receptions. Exhibitions always include at least one featuring international artist. We currently represent artists from all over the world, including Japan, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Australia and France. Do you exhibit your own work in the gallery too? I no longer show my own work at the gallery but we do still have customers coming to the gallery who bought work from my stall in Camden Passage, Islington over 25 years ago. What are you currently working on? We are currently working towards ‘COLLECT’, the art fair for contemporary objects which is held 13 – 17 May at the new Saatchi Gallery, London where 37 selected galleries from all over the world exhibit together. But we are open five days a week and always have a fantastic permanent collection. How does the gallery fit into the local community? We do try to get involved as much as possible. We will be taking part in Clerkenwell Design Week (25 – 27 May), London Jewellery Week (7 – 13 June) and

the London Architectural Festival (19 June – 4 July). We also have regular showcases at the Zetter Hotel which is around the corner from the gallery and I am a member of the Islington Chamber of Commerce. Is international recognition for British design important to you? It is very important for British design to be recognised internationally. There is fantastic, inspiring and really ‘avant garde’ jewellery work from the Netherlands for example, and it is essential for UK jewellery artists to create cutting-edge work that can be appreciated on this level. It is really important for UK artists to be culturally informed to create challenging work after graduation, and to look at what is happening in design in other countries in order to retain freshness and energy in their practice and to move forward.
