A good extension extends one’s life. A closed cluttered kitchen lacks views and sunlight, and means the household will reside in front of the television in the living room. The outmoded rear kitchens of Victorian terraces can now be opened up to the sunlight of the garden, views out and easy access to the various types of adults’ and childrens’ play spaces of the garden and back terrace. These are important and spacious “outside rooms”, which are in danger of being ignored and neglected due to lack of easy access. The clarity of the kitchen layout of any new extension is important too. The simplest of layouts involves locating storage, shelves and kitchen units either side of the newly extended kitchen- leaving space for movement and furnishing between the flanking cupboards and units; leading the eyes and feet towards the sunlight, flowers and barbecue.

e're so glad to be back. And so is everyone else, if our inbox is anything to go by. After three months of lockdown, people are more than ready to return to normal life, even if we still can't entirely go back to all the old ways. Lots of Londoners have devised ingenious ways to maintain their livelihoods and cater to the new normal – and in this issue we focus on some of the new offerings that have come from this spirit of inventiveness. We look at home deliveries of specialist coffees, kits to make meals, individual dishes and cocktails and acutal restaurant meals, all of which have either launched or become more relevant over the past months. We're more focused than ever on home, so we have a large interiors section focusing on working at home, cooking in the garden and improving our living spaces. And of course this issue has more than 40 pages of wedding inspiration and information for anyone who is planning a wedding, whether a new one or a postponed one. Here's to a safe and healthy August.

Silo Until 29 August PEER GALLERY An exhibition of British painter Alex Urie’s work, entitled Silo, is at Hoxton’s Peer Gallery this month. His unique method involves brushing, pouring, dumping and flooding household paint onto an untreated surface like linen or canvas. Kensington and Chelsea Art Week: a post-lockdown update By EVE HERBERT

T

he gradual reopening of our city post lockdown is a prospect much welcomed, and as we adapt to ‘the new normal’ Kensington + Chelsea Art Week (KCAW) is inviting you to see what’s on offer right on your doorstep. Join self-guided walks curated by local food and history experts or become a fly-on-the-wall by peeking into the studios of the borough’s leading contemporary artists through immersive 360-degree short films called ‘Open Doors 360’. Pop on your clogs (or hop on your bike) to join guided adventures and be enlightened on the area's distinct cultural heritage, from Portobello Road’s Caribbean history to Chelsea’s literary tours. Each tour is curated and guided by one of our local icons, including Piers Thompson of Portobello Radio, artist Alison Jackson and

Geoffrey Matthews of Chelsea Arts Club. Vestalia Chilton, Director of KCAW said: “These walks are a beautiful snapshot of Kensington & Chelsea when there is a real urge to get outdoors safely, post lockdown. Each self-guided walk shares a personal insight into the history of the area.” ‘Open Doors 360’ was initiated during lockdown to support the creative community resulting in an exciting run of 360-degree interviews with artists. Invited into their creative spaces, we can gain a rare glimpse into the reality of their lives and practices – and through the 360 technology we can be fully immersed, as if in the room. Artists include actors Terence Stamp and Nickolas Grace; ballet dancer Mark Elie, founder of Portobello Dance School; sculptors Danny Lane and Joe Rush; BAFTA-winning photographer Alison Jackson; poet and spoken word artist Isis Amlak; painters Lucille Dweck and Piers Butler and artist Kate Daudy. Produced by Maya Sanbar of Chasing the Light Studio in partnership with Damian Rayne of Muse Films and The Galleries Association, supported by the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea Council’s Arts Grants Scheme, these films give audiences unique “behind the scenes” access as never before. Maya Sanbar said : “This project provides a meaningful opportunity to anyone with internet access anywhere in the world, to glimpse into the world of these unique artists, in a very personal way.” K E N S I N GTO N A N D CHELSEA ART WEEK Visit kcaw.co.uk to view the full programme.

DISHOOM

Dishoom

Dishoom's first ever at-home cookery kit is the Bacon Naan Roll box, which includes everything you need to recreate Dishoom's best-selling breaksfast dish at home. But don't expect to put no effort in - the naans come as balls of dough to be fried and baked by you. Instructions come by video – and there's even a spare third ball of dough in case you mess up. Then it's bacon, chilli jam, cream cheese and coriander for the best breakfast in town.

Middle Eastern restaurant Bubala has launched a shakshuka kit containing everything you need to create the brunch dish at home: a ready-made sauce (smoky and spicy), four eggs from Fenton Farm (expertly packaged), two laffa breads (essential for scooping and mopping), a tub of fresh hummus and garnishes of parsley, dill and olive oil. £20, delivery anywhere within M25; bubala.co.uk

Casacosta

With my holiday to Italy cancelled this year, a delivery of fine Italian produce from Casacosta seems like the next best thing. Founded by restaurateur Roberto Costa, you can order everything from salami to wine, as well as meal kits to create your own Italian pasta dishes such as tagliatelle al ragu, gnocchi al pesto and ravioli al tocco. It's quick, easy and absolutely delicious.

Provenance butcher has devised a selection of boxes to showcase their excellent grass-fed, free range meats. We tried the Weekend Box (£55) which included two sirloin steaks, two flat-iron chickens, four cutlets, five sausages, two beef skewers and two lamb skewers. Incredible Lemon Pie Recipe donated by Circolo Popolaire, Gloria

INGREDIENTS For the Pastry • 90g unsalted butter • 20g ground almonds • 50g icing sugar • 2 large eggs1 • 50g plain flour • 1/2 tsp salt For the Lemon Custard • 1 leaf gelatin • 3 unwaxed lemons • 3 eggs • 70g caster sugar • 140g unsalted butter For the Italian Meringue • 230g caster sugar • 2 tablespoons water • juice of 1 lemon • 4 egg whites

METHOD 1 To make the pastry, soften the butter with a spatula in a bowl. In a mixer with a paddle (flat beater) attachment, beat the softened butter, ground almonds (almond meal) and icing (confectioners’) sugar until smooth. Then add the eggs, one at a time, while beating. Incorporate the flour and salt and mix until crumbly. Form the dough into a ball, wrap in cling film and rest overnight in the refrigerator. 2 Make the lemon custard. Soften the gelatine in a bowl of cold water for 5 minutes. Zest two of the lemons and squeeze out the juice of all three. In a bowl, beat the eggs with a fork. Combine the lemon juice, sugar and butter in a pan and bring to the boil. Gradually add the eggs, incorporating them with a whisk. Cook over a low heat until the mixture comes to a gentle boil. 3 Pour the mixture into a bowl. Squeeze in the gelatine and incorporate it. Add the lemon zest and use an immersion blender to mix it well. Put into an airtight container and cool overnight in the fridge. 4 Preheat the oven to 175°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Roll out the pastry dough into a 6mm (1/4 inch) thick disc. Grease a tart pan with butter and line with the pastry. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

To make the Italian meringue, dissolve the sugar into 2 tablespoons of water and the lemon juice in a pan over a low heat. Bring to the boil and cook until the mixture reads 120°C/250°F on a cooking thermometer. If you don’t have a cooking thermometer, put a little of the syrup on 5

a spoon and let one drop fall into a glass of cold water. If it forms a small, soft ball, the syrup is ready. In a grease-free bowl, whisk the egg whites to stiff peaks. 6 Pour the syrup in a thin stream into the meringue while whisking until the mixture cools

Fill the pastry case with the lemon custard. Use a plastic spatula to cover the tart with meringue, creating a dome in the centre. Caramelise with a chef’s blowtorch. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour before serving. 7

Miso Buttered Potatoes Recipe donated by Hicce

e use two different potato varieties depending on the time of year: Red Duke of York or Pippa potatoes. We get these from a supplier in Northumberland called Carroll’s Heritage Potatoes. The right produce makes a difference and we highly recommend buying potatoes from their online shop.

INGREDIENTS • 80g water • 80g red miso paste (salted) • 250g block of unsalted butter • 500g waxy small to medium potatoes • 1 bunch of chives

METHOD 1 Light up your BBQ. Boil or steam the potatoes until cooked. Different potatoes will take different times to cook; start with 10 minutes and then keep checking every few minutes.

2 Take the potatoes out of the water or steamer and leave to cool. Whilst waiting, dice the block of butter. Once the potatoes are cool, cut them in half and place them on the grill cut side down. 3 After a few minutes, and once they have coloured on one side, turn them over to repeat the process. Remove them from the grill and keep them somewhere warm. 4 Next, take a small pan and heat the water, but don’t boil it. Add the butter dice by dice, whisking as you go. Keep the pan on a low heat while the water and butter emulsify. Add the miso and whisk. Chop up your chives and toss them to the emulsion. 5 Pour the butter all over the potatoes and dig in.

Green Chicken Curry Recipe donated by Rosa’s Thai Cafe

INGREDIENTS • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 3 tbsp green curry paste • 400ml coconut milk • 1 tbsp sustainable palm sugar • 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce • sea salt • 3 kaffir lime leaves, torn • 500g chicken breast, cut into chunks (substitute with firm tofu for a veggie version) • 100g Thai aubergines, cut into quarters • 150g tinned bamboo shoots, cut into bite-size pieces • Thai basil leaves (or Italian ones) • steamed jasmine rice, to serve

To garnish • 2 red chillies, sliced • Sprigs of basil

METHOD 1 Heat the oil in a saucepan over a high heat and add the curry paste. Stir-fry for 10 seconds until fragrant or until the oil is incorporated into the paste. 2 Reduce the heat to medium and add half the coconut milk. Cook for about 2 minutes until the green oil splits and rises to the surface. 3 Next, pour in the remaining coconut milk. Add the palm sugar and fish sauce then season with a pinch of salt. Stir in the lime leaves and place the chicken in the pan. 4 Add aubergines and the bamboo shoots. Cook over a medium heat for 7-10 minutes until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the basil leaves. 5 Ladle into serving bowls, garnish with some sliced chilli and a sprig of basil. Serve with steamed rice.

ONE STOP APOCALYPSE SHOP

INVESTING IN TAKEAWAY BOXES

Market FORCES

It’s a rare restaurant that survives lockdown by transforming itself into a One Stop Apocalypse Shop. Absolutely finds out how Jesse Dunford Wood’s Parlour weathered the storm

I

f the events of the past few months have been bad for business, they have been terrible for restaurants. Going out to eat and drink was the first thing to stop when the pandemic hit, and the consequences have been dire: closed eateries, unemployed chefs, bankrupt suppliers. There have, however, been some businesses that were quick to adapt to the situation and are now emerging from the crisis with new strengths – and you’d be hard pressed to find a better example of someone adapting to unprecedented circumstances than Jesse Dunford Wood, founder of Kensal Green’s Parlour. Instead of closing during that awful week in March, Parlour immediately transformed itself into a One Stop Apocalypse Shop and has been regularly reinventing itself ever since.

Wo r d s P E N D L E H A R T E

How did Dunford Wood set about weathering the Corona storm and what made him do it? “Survival instinct,” he says simply. It’s clearly not in his nature to simply let his business slide, and anyway, there are bills to pay and a family to support. “We never closed. To begin with it was about emptying the fridges, which were full because we were gearing up for a big weekend. We sold everything.” This was the week in March when people were posting pictures of empty supermarket shelves on Instagram, scenes that we never thought we’d see in our lifetimes. There was no rice, no flour and definitely no loo paper – apart from at NW10’s Parlour. “In the first week we did a full takeaway roast duck, but it was too much work. We needed a full team, but with no service charge and no drink spend we were taking less than half the money. So we furloughed 30 staff and kept five.” On the Thursday before lockdown, he spent £2,000 on takeaway boxes “not knowing whether it was a stroke of genius or a terrible idea. I had to do something.” Of course he has reordered multiple times since then. From then he had ‘seven amazing weeks’ as word spread through social media and organically. By the second week there were queues forming outside – and by week four they were doing more revenue than they would have as a pub, with just a six hour trading day. The offering quickly expanded to include everything that people were struggling to get hold of. At first they had vegetable boxes, smoked salmon and bread, then they added vacuum-packed meat and fish (‘our butcher was surprised that we were still ordering – in fact at one point we were ordering eight times as much as we usually would’). And of course, loo paper. They never ran out of loo paper. ‘Our entrance was a 10 foot pile of loo rolls for the first few weeks. Our regular chemical

supplier’s business had exploded and he had no other route to market for all the loo roll, so we took it.’ Flour, also, they never ran out of – they had 25kg bags delivered and couldn’t put it into 500g bags quickly enough. While some suppliers were going broke or closing, others were hobbling on. Soon the offering expanded to alcohol – ‘people still needed gin and tonic, even though they could get it cheaper elsewhere’ – and they bought all the draught beer from the neighbouring closed pubs and sold that too. Puddings, signature frozen chicken PUDDING TO GO

kyivs, cow pies and soup were all packaged up with instructions on how to heat them up at home. And when the yeast ran out, Jesse sold small tubs of sourdough starter with basic instructions on the label informing people to ask google. There just wasn’t time to give everyone a lesson in baking sourdough bread, says Jesse. ‘I expect about 70 per cent of people’s efforts were a disaster but at least they tried. We sold so much of it.’ The other great lockdown success was cookie dough – frozen rolls of dough ready for slicing and baking were always a staple item for Jesse’s kitchen but when they offered them for sale, he really hit the zeitgeist. People clearly wanted the feeling of having baked their own cookies

– and the smell – but without the actual messiness of butter and eggs. Cookie dough is one of the things that he’s planning to keep on, post-lockdown. The whole venture has been very much about community; interaction with locals has been very much part of the appeal for Jesse and his team. ‘We’re not the most obvious place, so it’s been good to have a spotlight on us,’ says Jesse. He’s learnt a lot about his customers – people have brought in loaves of bread to barter and photographs of their cookies, which he has loved. He’s also learnt about their limitations – ‘it’s amazing when a 40 yearold woman lifts up a chicken and asks you how to cook it – you think, how can you have got this far without ever putting a chicken in the oven?’ As we speak, we’re looking at the imminent reopening of restaurants and pubs after more than three months’ closure – and the weather forecast is looking iffy. Jesse is about to reinvent himself again, something he clearly enjoys doing. ‘Parlour hasn’t really changed much in the past eight years and now this sudden spanner in the works made us constantly adjust. I quite enjoy it – I like thinking on my feet.’ He has shown some impressive qualities during this strange period, including resourcefulness, decisiveness, courage and flexibility. Maybe things would be looking different now if Jesse were prime minister? A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

est Hampstead’s Ham reopened with a dedicated Ham at Home menu, designed for home delivery. This British/ Australian eaterie has a focus on high class ingredients with carefully sourced meat and fish – but if you’re expecting lots of varieties of ham, you’ll be disappointed. The name might be misleading for lovers of pork. Our delivery had travelled for more than a mile but was – impressively – still hot. To start there was soda bread with whipped vegemite butter, an instant Aussie classic – and then burrata with Datterino tomatoes and oregano, a delicious starter beautifully arranged in takeaway packaging that

would doubtless have been transferred more elegantly to the plate by the chef who made it – but nonetheless, it was creamy and excellent. Also very good was buttermilk fried chicken with satay sauce. A main course of roasted cod with gnocchi was high class, but our favourite dish was a Cumbrian beef rump with grilled baby gem. Soft, slow-cooked beef was silky and grilled lettuce was a revelation. Puddings of chocolate mousse with honeycomb and cardamom rice pudding were creative and impressive. In all, this is a stylish, inventive kitchen that’s adapted brilliantly to the delivery model. We’ll visit in person soon. Delivery or collection available, 238 West End Lane, NW6 1LG; hamwesthampstead.com

alaysian restaurant Mambow has launched a new delivery concept, a build-your-own meal that’s cooked in the restaurant then finished off and served at home. The first menu is called Nyonya Summer, merging the bright flavours of Malaysian, Chinese, Indonesian and Thai cuisines. All the components to make one main, two side dishes and a dessert arrive at my door. There's char sui pork, a juicy cut of shoulder with a sticky sweet glaze — all I have to do is pop it in the oven for eight minutes. The sides are just as easy. The Nasi Ulam is a refreshing and light dish that mixes black rice with chopped herbs like Thai basil, coriander, mint and lemongrass tossed in a sambal (Indonesian chilli paste) dressing. The Rojak Salad is an unusual, fruity salad which complements the rich and sweet spice of the char sui: courgette, pineapple, apple, beansprouts, tempeh, crispy onions and radishes in a peanut, tamarind and sambal dressing. To finish, there’s a hefty slice of a coconut palm sugar caramel and dark chocolate tart, an extremely indulgent end to a memorable meal. £30; To order, DM choices to @Mambow_ldn or Whatsapp 07833 778850; wearemambow.com

ith more branches set to open soon, Southbank, Shoreditch and Wimbledon are leading the way for Wahaca postlockdown. A welcome return to the oddly quiet high street we’ve all become used to during the past four months, when I go to collect my food social distancing measures are in full swing. Frijoles crema (creamy black beans with crumbled cheese and crema) is good but rather rich, so I order the light salsa as a second dip to accompany the tortilla chips. After all the meat and fishheavy options of my last visit, I try mushroom and cheese tacos, which are, surprisingly, quite meaty, with a generous filling. Our most loyal readers may recall my love for this dish, but it’s worth repeating: the sweet potato and feta taquito is delicious, with the crisp salad perfectly offsetting the creaminess. Another reliable favourite is the chorizo quesadilla with crushed sweet potato and cheese, decadent without being too oily. Chicken quesadilla is lovely and fresh and comes with a generous

helping of avocado. If you’re on more of a budget, get either the guacamole or the chicken quesadillas, as there’s ample avocado in each serving. I’m not sure whether this is merely a reflection of the weight I’ve acquired during the last four months, but the portions did seem slightly smaller than pre-lockdown. However, saying this, I was completely sated by the time I’d eaten my way through my selection. While bookings are obviously encouraged for the time being, walkins are welcome where spaces are available, and there’s always Deliveroo for those of us more hesitant to start dining out again quite yet. Entrepreneur Roger Narula, culinary director Shveta Tuli, and indeed the whole team, provide a flawless, friendly service. Upon being greeted by Roger himself I’m seated at a cosy booth overlooking the new al fresco dining area. Updated for summer, the outdoor, and pet-friendly, dining area includes beanbags, ambient

The food places emphasis on simple Thai fusion dishes using fresh ingredients and responsibly-sourced meats and fish. The new range of summer cocktails is made with a base of freshly-squeezed fruits like watermelon and grape, beautifully presented with sweet, tangy flavours. As well as a wide range of cocktails, gold-medalist wines and regional whiskeys from the far east, Yum Sa has partnered with Singha to introduce new beer towers that hold five to six pints just for your table, allowing for contact free drinking.

The Sticky Phed Yang, pan-seared duck breast, falls apart on my fork and is coated in a sticky and sweet sauce with stir fried pak choy and fluffy jasmine rice on the side. The Beef Phuket is also surprisingly good: short ribs that have been slow-cooked for hours, served in a spicy curry with wok-fried broccoli and tom yum rice, a symphony of classic Thai ingredients. The Asian theme continues into dessert with homemade coconut ice cream made with fresh shredded coconut, a refreshing palate cleanser. Yum Sa is taking extra measures to make customers feel comfortable during the current climate, having recently passed an Ecolab health and safety assessment and enrolled in the Safe to Trade program invigilated by the Shield Safety Group. Totes AMAZE

Absolutely quizzes bag designer Esin Akan about what makes a best-selling handbag By PENDLE HARTE

ESIN AKAN

KENSINGTON BAG, LARGE

Q What makes a good bag? A I think listening to what your customers

want, following trends, being yourself as a brand, having a signature, using high quality materials and craftsmanship makes a bag good at the end.

Q Your tagline is 'smart bags for smart

women'. What does that mean?

A All our bags are convertible, all made

to be used in multiple ways. This helps women adapt to multiple scenarios from work to evening, weekday to weekend easily and look chic at all times. So you get one bag but actually it is three or four bags in one. That’s what we mean by smart bags for smart women. The idea came during my MBA, when I was inspired by women around me at the time.

Q What are your best-sellers and why? A The Chelsea bag - it is five bags in one:

a clutch bag, top handle bag, shoulder and crossbody bag and belt bag. Not only is it ultra versatile but it’s also a very beautiful bag with the knot detail in front. Our alltime best seller is Nice, a mid-sized practical expandable crossbody bag and clutch.

Q You have worked for Burberry and

Anya Hindmarch among others. What did you learn from the big bag brands? A I learned how to make a beautiful and high quality handbag. My job was to source bags from all around the world, so I learned where to find the best materials and how to

46

get them made by experienced craftsmen. Both have been very valuable experiences. Q Where are all your bags made and

where does your leather come from?

A Our bags are made in Turkey by

experienced craftsmen who make wellknown designer brands. Our leathers come from Turkey as well but most of them are bespoke for us, chosen for the texture, quality and colors we like. We also source leathers from tanneries that supply to reputable designer brands.

Q How did you come to

launch your brand?

A During my studies and corporate life

I always wanted to create my own brand one day. I was passionate about bringing

beautiful and sensible products to life. Working for designer brands in Milan, Paris, London and Istanbul gave me the confidence and knowledge that I needed to make great bags. However, I never had the courage to start my own business until I started my MBA at London Business School. It did not take me long to realise that making great bags was not good enough. The bags I make had to be better and smarter than any other bag to survive in such a competitive market. Surrounded by very clever successful women, I wanted to create a line that appealed to such busy urban women. We conducted research with over 100 women about what they wanted in a bag. Women want light, high quality, understated, practical bags with unique design features at accessible prices. These features constitute our brand DNA. Q What designers do you admire? A I love minimal designs made with

high quality materials, so I love Celine, Loewe and The Row.

FASHION • JEWELLERY

Golden TIME

We’ve been closed, now we’re back, please visit, says Wimbledon’s Michael Platt Jewellers By EVE HERBERT

M

ichael Platt, Goldsmiths & Jewellers in Wimbeldon Village, are happy to be back. Both the shop and on-site workshop have re-opened to the ‘new normal’. Being in lockdown has meant being away from nearest and dearest during very difficult times and, for most, it hasn’t been possible to celebrate special occasions with many cancelled or postponed; Michael Platt is now ready and raring to provide some sparkle. If you were prevented from attending a special celebration, or realise now how valued a family member is or perhaps want to show your appreciation to someone who was especially supportive, kind and considerate during the isolation of lockdown, don’t lose any time in showing you care, mark the occasion now, show your appreciation or thank the person with a very special piece of jewellery. Jewellery speaks directly from the heart. the deepest of feelings and sentiment can be expressed with jewellery. The perfect piece of jewellery, enduring, says so much more than words ever can. True sentiment behind a thoughtful gift of jewellery is underestimated. Whether the jewellery boldly declares I Love You; I Need You; Well Done; Thank You; Congratulations; You’re Special to me or just marks a moment in time, it always does a brilliant job of reflecting heartfelt emotions. For jewellery to have emotional impact, one doesn’t need to spend zillions; it’s the thought that counts. Choosing a winning jewellery gift conveying sentiments may not be easy, but Michael Platt stocks a magnificent array of sparkling rings, earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets to choose from in silver, gold and platinum.

“Many things have changed – but standards remain the same” A custom-made bespoke piece of jewellery is the ultimate thoughtful gift. With some imagination and a little effort, a wonderful unique piece can be tailor made in store to suit requirements and budget. Michael Platt specialises in working directly with customers, guiding them through the exciting journey of the bespoke jewellery process from start to finish. Commissioning a bespoke item presents an opportunity to take part in creating a truly original outstanding piece of jewellery that directly reflects the personality of the recipient and, once given, will always mean so much.

Jewellery that is weighted with meaning and thoughtfulness will be highly appreciated, enjoyed, cherished and forever treasured. Recent times have been tough for all and very rough indeed for some, with a new everyday ‘normal’ for most, including Michael Platt. You can feel secure in visiting: the shop and on-site workshop are safe environments with regular excellent standards of hygiene and cleanliness constantly applied and everyone, after more than four weeks of trading, is coping well. The whole area is misted regularly with anti-microbial surface protector; all staff wear face masks, sometimes gloves, and customers must wear masks and hand sanitize on entry. Plexi-screens have been introduced to all serving areas with cleaning and sanitizing completed after each customer leaves. With an on-site workshop, all jewellery is properly cleaned and sanitized. Many things have changed but the standards of customer care, expertise, workmanship, creativity and friendly welcome (behind the face mask) are all still exactly the same. They look forward to seeing you in the shop soon. M I C H A E L P L AT T GOLDSMITHS AND JEWELLERS 1 Church Road, Wimbledon Village, SW19 5DW 020 8947 4774 michaelplatt.co.uk

LONDON LOOKS

London fashion has always been as distinctive as the city itself, so here's a shout out for the healthy crop of small studios led by brilliant designers who bring refreshingly different style to bridal dressing. Names we love right now are Nikeen Asar for dramatic silhouettes using luxe fabrics and Hermione de Paula (as shown on our cover) for pure glamour with botanical influences. Also check out the designs of Rita Colson, light, airy and so elegant – her second collection is now available at The Wedding Club. nikeenasar.com, hermionedepaula.com, thewedding-club.co.uk

LONG WEEKEND WEDDINGS With longer to plan and a real reason to treasure time with loved ones, we expect many more long-weekend (or midweek) celebrations. For rural idyll with cool accommodation we'd choose Sibton Park estate in Suffolk's Wilderness Reserve. Deer Park in Devon is a front runner for elegance and home-comforts, with its gorgeous manor, romantic Italian gardens and superb local produce. If you're hosting a crowd, we can't resist Gosfield Hall in Essex – the former royal palace boasts a dramatic 120-foot aisle, stunning ballroom, lush grounds and plenty of accommodation, including the amazing Rococo Honeymoon Suite.

HIDEAWAY HONEYMOONS

03 TOTALLY BESPOKE RINGS

One of the biggest trends in wedding jewellery is for bespoke rings. More couples are incorporating family stones, even the gold and other precious metals from old rings, to create a new piece that has enormous sentimental and symbolic value – riches beyond the price of the ring. For choice and style, we love Lebrusan Studio and Taylor & Hart. For custom-made wedding bands that you create yourself – perhaps the ultimate romantic pre-wedding date – head to the Hatton Garden studio of Daniel Christopher.

Romantic solitude is set to be a travel theme of 2021. Kuoni reports that demand for its private villas has never been higher. Our pick would be its retreats on the wonderful Maldives island of Milaidhoo – a private pool where you can have a proper swim and in-villa dining for barefoot luxury. We also dream about Fanjove Island, Tanzania with Turquoise Holidays – no WiFi, vast ocean and a thatched banda on the beach. Closer to home, how about a cosy shepherd's hut in Eype, on Dorset's Jurassic Coast? It's deliciously rustic and perfect for a minimoon. kuoni.co.uk, turquoiseholidays.co.uk, shepherdshuteype.co.uk

HIGH-GLAMOUR BRIDESMAIDS

The days when bridesmaids had to wear the same dress – whether or not they loathed it – are gone. The gurus at Maids to Measure tell us that the trend on numbers is up (six plus bridesmaids is not so unusual), so the likelihood of them all liking the same design is, let's face it, vanishingly remote. Mix and match is definitely one way to go. Blending plain and print looks great, as does one colour in different styles or the same dress in tonal hues. Maids to Measure offers showroom appointments and online ordering. Also check out the wonderful options at TH&TH and Motee Maids. maidstomeasure.com, thandth.com, moteemaids.co.uk

HEIRLOOM HEELS Do you have to start with the dress? There's a strong argument for dressing from the ground up with so many exquisite heirloom heels around. Emmy London's bespoke service offers endless opportunities to tailor colour, heel height and trims, while her made-toorder shoes (such as hand-beaded Isadora, below) are luscious. Freya Rose's signature mother-of-pearl inlaid heels are heavenly (and feet-on-theground robust), with options such as brass inlay and even monograms. Di Hassall personalises her collection with everything from embroidery to ribbons.

BRITISH CLASSICS

There is a long tradition of fine tailoring in this country – and bridal is the place where we have the opportunity to experience this first-hand. Longestablished names such as Louise Selby and Sassi Holford have earned their reputations because they create beautiful gowns with superb detailing right here – and they know how to make brides look and feel beautiful. And for mothers of the bride and wedding guests, that impeccably cut coat or dress by Lalage Beaumont or Joyce Young (also designed and made here) is both confidence boost and smart investment dressing.

HEAVENLY HEADLINES

GIFTS WITH LOVE Gift lists are evolving, and there's no need to feel stuck for ideas if you don't need another dinner service. From honeymoon funds to social gifting (where people gift their time), there are brilliant ways to let people show how much they love you. Of course, if you do need a dinner service or sofa, there is every reason to add it to the list. Some guests are traditionalists and most would rather have a firm idea of what you want. Top dressing for brides (and guests) is in vogue and we adore this revived love affair with hats, crowns and the rest. Our pick for the ultimate wedding halo is Jane Taylor's regal pearl design – perfect for brides or regal guests. But it doesn't end there. From Awon Golding's stunning bridal collection (including Bianca Jagger-style picture hat) to Ann-Marie Faulkner's fantastic and edgy veils and headdresses, there's every excuse to grab the headlines on your wedding day. janetaylorlondon.com, awongolding.com, annmariefaulkner.co.uk

LALAGE BEAUMONT

Imp eccable style from

Knightsbridge occasion specialist Lalage Beaumont is a go-to for ready-to-wear and made-to-measure pieces with timeless elegance. She reveals the secrets of wedding-day style

least three months before the occasion. This will allow time for any alterations that might be needed and also for shoes and other accessories to be sourced. We have a wide selection of hats designed to go with the outfits and our handbag collection can often provide the perfect co-ordinating bag, but at the moment we don’t offer shoes.

L

alage Beaumont is the name to know if you are shopping for any special occasion. Founded in 2004, the British designer has impeccable tailoring credentials and is known for elegant and timeless pieces, produced right here in London, that earn their place in your wardrobe long after the big event. Q Can you explain the process and benefits of a made to measure outfit? A The first stage is to discuss what the customer is looking for and the options. Once the decision is made, we take detailed body measurements so that the special pattern can be created. We then make a toile which I fit on the customer, adjustments are made, then the outfit can then be created. The benefits are that customers can have exactly what they want, the outfit fits perfectly and there is the opportunity to have something totally unique. Any of our collection can be made to measure and with minor tweaks to the styling if required. Q How long before the wedding should you start outfit shopping? A If you are looking for made-to-measure, we really need a minimum of three months. If shopping for a ready-to-wear outfit, I would still advise shopping at

Q What is your guidance for dressing to suit the style of wedding and choosing colours? A Simple country weddings lend themselves to a more relaxed, softer look, whereas large and more formal weddings are more suited to structured outfits – a dress-coat or long jacket over a matching dress, for instance. Regarding colours, although there are seasonal trends, there are perennial favourites, including sky blue, soft grey, sapphire, pale pink and chic neutrals. Q What new trends in hats are emerging? A Hairband-style hats are very popular now and are a very good option for anyone who isn’t that comfortable in a big hat. Generally, smaller hats are coming through too, but the drama of a big hat is difficult to beat if the wearer is confident. Q What are the most flattering outfit

choices for the mother of the bride? A I think a well-cut coat with defined shoulders, is always flattering, whatever your shape. Generally, straight and neat dress shapes are chic, sophisticated and work well. Our shift dresses in raw silk start at £599 for ready-to-wear, these are classic styles popular with both mothers of brides and also our business customers. Q What are your thoughts on ordering occasion wear online? A An image on a website can only tell you so much. There is nothing more important than seeing and touching fabrics and trying

different shapes and colours to see what suits you best. If you have no option but to buy online, consider a phone call or virtual consultation so that you can hear suggestions and learn more about the fabrics and your options. We are only too happy to help in any way we can but we do advise a boutique appointment where possible – we limit customer numbers in the store at this time to ensure our customers can shop with complete confidence. Eco -friendly p arties at

DEER PARK Historic Deer Park is a glorious venue in the rolling Devon hills. We sit down with Managing Director Mark Godfrey to find out about its superb eco-friendly weddings and celebrations

offer. You can even enjoy a relaxed and intimate wedding in the Walled Garden. A short woodland walk takes you to the Summer House, which is now licensed for outdoor weddings and features a stunning flower aisle. Celebrations continue in the Italian Garden, set in front of the Georgian Orangery. Plus, there’s a large lawn for garden games and wild children!

D

eer Park is approaching a huge milestone with its 300th birthday – and it’s never looked better. But at the heart of this exclusive-use mansion nestled in the rolling Devon hills is a spirit of innovation because the venue has long championed green and sustainable practices alongside legendary hospitality – with fabulous accommodation and mouthwatering menus. Q What does the Sustainable Wedding Package at Deer Park include? A Over the last seven years we have been adopting as many sustainable practices as possible. Our super eco-friendly wedding package includes cider made from our own fruit, which also works well in bottles for favours. Head Chef Hadleigh Barrett creates a seasonal plant-based feast with produce from our walled garden. Obviously the important element in an eco-friendly wedding is the reduction of waste, so we work with our couples to ensure that between us we make a difference while everyone has an amazing experience! Q Everyone loves a garden party. How do outdoor celebrations work here? A We love being outside, and with 80 acres of grounds we have so much to

Q A foodie extravaganza is promised here, with produce grown on site. What are your menu highlights? A Food glorious food is our passion at Deer Park. Head Gardener Ollie produces masses of fabulous produce. We can do the finest fine-dining or something rustic on the South African Braai. There’s even the large Bushman wood-fired oven for pizza – a favourite among guests are the chef’s amazing dessert pizzas. For super casual dining we offer delicious Vietnamese street food, tacos and burritos, healthy Buddha bowls or Greek mezze. Finish the night in front of the open fires with ham & cheese toasties. Q What accommodation do you have at Deer Park for the newlyweds and their guests? A The first romantic night of wedded bliss has got to be spent in a tree house, of course! But it all starts at The Playhouse where the bride and friends stay the night before. There’s a dining table that doubles

up as a hair and beauty bar and a fridge full of bubbles. Meanwhile, the guys check into The Shed, equipped with a pool table, dartboard and outdoor BBQ kitchen. The main house has 14 ensuite bedrooms and an additional 15 garden rooms are available overlooking the orchard and grounds. If more accommodation is required, we can add yurts, bell tents or teepees. Q What do you see weddings being like after Lockdown and what trends are coming through? A Couples are adding on a day or two, going more informal and utilising the gardens. Certainly, we can see that retreat and festival-style weddings over a long lazy weekend are becoming the thing and many couples now want to go as eco-friendly as they can.

Besp oke rings from

TAYLOR & HART London jeweller Taylor & Hart is renowned for special jewels. CEO Nikolay Piriankov reveals the true love story behind its gorgeous collections

T

aylor & Hart was founded in 2012 after CEO Nikolay Piriankov popped the question to his now-wife. Realising how few jewellers offered a fully bespoke service, the brand was soon born. Today, Taylor & Hart has showrooms in London and New York offering couples the opportunity to be fully involved in the design process. Q If you want a bespoke engagement ring, how do you start and what’s the process? A Every bespoke process starts with a design consultation. We encourage you to share all of your ideas because the possibilities are endless. We’ll explain the 4Cs and you can find what works best for you. Next, you’ll receive a render of your design and we’ll make any amendments. Once you’re happy, you’ll get the final quote. This process usually takes anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks. Then

the design is made to order with the crafting process taking up to four weeks. Q Lab-grown diamonds are increasingly popular – what are their qualities and benefits? A More and more of our customers are opting for lab-grown or engineered diamonds as an optically identical alternative to earth-mined diamonds. They are created in laboratories and many believe they are more ethical. Another benefit is that they are up to 40% cheaper than their earth-grown counterparts. The choice is ultimately yours and we encourage couples to make it based on research. Q What are the emerging trends in engagement rings? A Our most popular designs right now are delicate and not too ornate. Narrow bands have increased in popularity, perhaps because they stack easily and exude femininity. Round diamond solitaires may be a classic, but a lot of proposers go for more complex three-stone or vintage designs which convey a more symbolic meaning. We’re very pleased that fancy coloured gemstones are becoming ever more popular, along with 18ct yellow gold. Q For couples who are looking to create their own wedding bands, what would your advice be? A Do it together as a shared experience. A practical thing to do first is set a budget. There’s an unwritten rule to put aside 4% of the total wedding budget for the bands, but how much you spend is entirely up to you. Consider designs that work for your jobs, hobbies and lifestyle. Lastly, customise. Even plain bands have personalisation options like hand inscriptions, electrocardiographs

or voice-wave engravings. All of our rings have a complimentary ruby set on the inside, but this could be any other gemstone to symbolise your relationship. Q With online shopping bigger than ever, would you advise ordering bridal jewellery this way? A We advise couples to trust their intuition and also not to settle for anything less than their dream ring. We offer collection rings from £700, but if you prefer bespoke we’re confident that we can help you design your vision. Couples can visit one of our showrooms to discuss their ideas with an expert – we’ve recently reopened our City of London showroom for by-appointment bookings. If that's not possible, we ensure you get the same personal experience by booking a virtual consultation.

CLARIDGE'S page 92

he very first thing on your wedding checklist should be to discover your dream venue. It’s the hardest part of the planning process and (almost always) where the biggest part of your budget goes. The setting determines everything – the style of dress you choose, flowers, food, even the cake. One piece of good news is, when it comes to finding your perfect place, there’s more choice than ever before. The second is that venues have adapted as our priorities have evolved. They are becoming far more eco-friendly and exciting vegan menus are the order of the day not an afterthought. Outdoor ceremonies are increasingly popular – and look set to be even more so as we adjust to ‘new normal’ celebrations. Dogs welcomed at weddings – even as ring bearers wearing flower crowns – is really not so unusual. Most important of all, you don’t have to plan a one-day party. Couples are opting for a jam-packed weekend or midweek of fun. It is the party of a lifetime, after all. Absolutely Weddings’ experts have tried and tested venues across the UK to put together this shortlist, part of our Best 100 Venues 2020. So, whether you’re looking for a stunning glasshouse, regal estate, safari park, moated manor house, chic London hotel or dreamy woodland retreat, we have got it covered. Use this guide to inspire your planning and enjoy the adventure creating your dream celebration.

The brand trusted by professionals, and loved by you... The inside-out approach to skincare is becoming an increasingly appealing and effective way to achieve visible results. As we age, our collagen production slows down, affecting the appearance of our skin. Skinade’s active ingredients work together to produce a daily drink aimed at nourishing and supporting the skin from the inside for beautiful skin on the outside.

Love skinade “I just started my third month and see a great difference in the texture, elasticity and brightness of my skin highly recommend to everyone”.

he timing of lockdown wasn't great for any business, but for Kensal Rise beauty emporium Swanky it was dreadful. They had just opened a new site offering a range of new treatments from the high tech to the purely luxurious, with a focus on maintaning a supportive female environment. New decor, new products, new therapists, all ready to go – and then nothing. So it's great news that they have opened again – and not just for our nails. I tried an LED light therapy session, which is designed to cure literally all ills and restore life to dry, tired skin: it's a bizarre experience with a sensory deprivation feel, your face inside a light box. Then came a lash lift and tint to curl and elongate the lashes, like a perm. This is by no means a comfortable experience, as your eyes are glued together for some time, (contact lens wearers should take their specs) but results are impressive and longlasting.Meanwhile, my brows were laminated for a stable shape. Other additions to the Swanky repertoire include waxing, massage and facials – but the friendly, supportive environment remains the same. SWANKY Kensal Rise and Portobello Road;

G E T M O V I N G Absolutely quizzes Adam Ridler, Master Trainer at Ten Health & Fitness on getting fit post-lockdown Q Has lockdown had an impact on the nation’s fitness levels? A Not only has the closing of leisure facilities and sports clubs and studios reduced many people’s activities levels, but lockdown has put a stop to daily commutes and those little bits of movement we do throughout the day. Mental health has also reportedly worsened throughout lockdown with heightened stress and depression due to health anxieties, isolation and boredom. Q How can those of us who haven’t been exercising during lockdown get motivated?

A Start by finding something that interests you and that you actually enjoy, whether it’s pilates, jogging or HIIT. Then set some realistic short-term goals, as these “small wins” will keep you motivated as you progress. National guidelines state that we should try to achieve 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week, including two sessions which strengthen muscles. But you can start by trying short bouts of exercise a few times a week. You’ll benefit from a “dose response”, which is when less active people see great health

improvements by simply starting. Bodyweight exercises like pilates can be great for mindfulness too. Q How can people access online classes? A When lockdown started, there seemed to be a flurry of trainers, fitness brands and influencers doing Instagram Live workouts, but now many people have moved to using fitness brands’ own virtual training sessions. For example, at Ten Health & Fitness we have a series of free live sessions via our Instagram page as well as a schedule of sessions available through Zoom-calls. We also have low-impact on-demand workouts on our YouTube channel which are all instructed by our experts. ten.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

EYES OPEN Introducing the new normal at The Eye Place

N

ever did we imagine when going into 2020 that countries worldwide would be placed in lockdown due to a global pandemic. As Covid-19 filtered into the UK, guidance for healthcare changed daily. Eventually restrictions were placed across healthcare services, resulting in opticians only offering emergency or essential eye care. It was at this point that we closed our (always open) doors at The Eye Place and worked remotely, answering calls and emails and only seeing patients for essential eye care within the guidelines of the new restrictions. Throughout lockdown with minimal staff we continued to provide our services where possible, giving guidance when needed and placing repeat orders for spectacles and contact lenses which were delivered to patients either via post, and in some cases directly with appropriate measurements implemented . Although we had to pause our usual services, we wanted to continue to support our local community in as many ways as possible.

Fast forward three months and restrictions are slowly being lifted and our services can resume with some limitations. We have seen social distancing measures being put in place across shops all over the country and our practices are no different. As healthcare professionals we already adhere to many of these measures to provide a clean and clinical environment for our patients and respect their personal space. At all our Eye Place practices we have invested in advanced technology such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) and Optomap, which allow our optometrists to assess the back of the eye in detail to provide a more advanced evaluation of your eyes health, at a safe distance. This technology has been a key part of our eye examinations for many years now and is recommended to all. Additional measures include protective screens, regular cleaning of surfaces, chairs and eye wear, and the use of PPE for all appointments, all

of which will be kept in place from now on as we enter into our new normal. As a result of social distancing guidelines, visits to The Eye Place are by appointment only, ensuring minimal contact with others and the undivided attention of our eye care professionals. It’s a VIP personal shopping experience for eye care and eye wear. Understandably, venturing out is still daunting for some, which is why our optometrists and clinical team are available for phone consultations, to discuss visual concerns and orders from the comfort of your home. To add to our list of social distancing measures we have a brand-new piece of technology coming soon to a select few Eye Place practices, offering a contact-free method of dispensing spectacles personalised to you. Whether you are a new or existing patient please be aware that we are available to help with any concerns so feel free to get in touch and arrange a consultation at a time that suits you. esigner Georgia Collett was born and educated in London, studying fashion at Central Saint Martins and gaining a Masters in textile design at the Royal College of Art. For a number of years Georgia worked as a print designer for fashion companies including Orla Kiely and Alexander McQueen. In 2013 Georgia joined interior design practice Collett-Zarzycki where she has worked on luxury residential projects from London to Switzerland. Recently Christopher Farr launched a collection of her rug designs in collaboration with Collett-Zarzycki. The now iconic Alexandra Road estate in north-west London, fondly referred to as Rowley Way on account of its address, is a crescent-shaped structure

of unpainted reinforced concrete. Designed in 1968 by local council architect Neave Brown, it’s the sort of visionary complex complete with school and urban parkland that is now being rediscovered by design-savvy city dwellers. Georgia Collett’s duplex, perched on the top floor, affords contrasting urban views across surrounding Camden, with railway tracks to the north and facing St John’s Wood to the south, the lights from Lord’s cricket ground and leafy Regent’s Park in the distance. At first glance, this upside-down council estate flat (the bedrooms are on the lower floor and the living room on the upper floor) is an unexpected choice of home for Georgia, a youthful creative force at her father’s renowned interior design practice Collett-Zarzycki, who is used to applying her talents to conjuring luxurious interiors.‘I never thought I would find myself living in a mid-century design icon having only

But here there is a real consideration for the best use of the relatively small space and so much light,’ enthuses Georgia as she opens the door to her confidently eclectic space. In the entrance hall a tall dragon tree plant fills the double-height space and vintage airplane postcards are grouped and framed to create quirky wall art. ‘Modernism seemed so out of reach to me when I was growing up, as the reality in London is often to live in a semi-detached house unless you build something modern yourself. Yet when I discovered this flat, I loved how it is so well designed, intelligent and different. It is human in scale and its use of space. Not a centimetre has been wasted,’ says Georgia. Surprisingly it also feels very warm, a quality that is enhanced by the use of wood in the staircase, front windows, sliding panel frames and in the cabinetry throughout. It’s not just about having a squishy sofa, it’s also about what surface you have under your feet and how easily one is able to move around the space.’ On the top floor, Georgia tackled the challenge of living in what is effectively one big room, creating order by defining spaces visually and having a place for everything. She has skillfully introduced visual interest, physical warmth and sensory comfort via her own rugs and textiles. ‘My mother and father are both designers and I grew up in a very creative environment. I think my parents would have liked the idea of me becoming a lawyer but design was really the natural path for me. I’m more about creativity, aesthetics and problem solving!’ Her designs, in collaboration with CollettZarzycki for rug company Christopher Farr, now anchor several spaces, including ‘Assembled Stripe’, a low pile Afghan wool rug in the sitting area. “She has introduced visual interest, physical warmth and sensory comfort” that you don’t see often and looks very modern. It is made in Afghanistan by a charity supporting local people, crafts and maintaining the tradition of rug-making in that part of the world. ‘Craft is incredibly important to my design ethos. I think with manufacturing becoming more and more mass market and machine-led, it is the handmade and bespoke that are truly special and desirable. I feel fortunate to work with many small-scale British and international craftspeople in my work and it feels valuable to be supporting these artisans,’ says Georgia. In the flat, Georgia’s

bold rugs ground the pieces of furniture and also add sound insulation, warmth and tactility. ‘Most of all they add supporting pattern in a room without feeling overwhelming, so that I can relax,’ she says. ‘My favourite spot is sitting on the sofa looking out of the huge south-facing windows and watching the sky change through the day.’ The generous dusky pink two-seater sofa is sprinkled with cushions, including a red one in mohair woven by Georgia at art school. Behind it, sliding panel doors that close off the dining room display two prints of vases bought at the Maeght gallery in Paris. A Christian Astuguevieille ‘Afridans’ stool from Holly Hunt London playfully channels sunnier climes and a terracotta painted niche displays a portrait by a family friend David Champion. The larger portrait, by Georgia’s brother Jesse Collett, is given space to breathe and pops on the painted wall in a colour Georgia refers to as ‘cement’ and visually ties the room’s palette together. Around the corner, in the kitchen– dining room, tiles and cabinets have been restored to match the originals. The 1960s dining table bought on eBay

and chairs re-covered in new fabric look as if they’ve always been there. In the main bedroom Georgia’s own framed monoprint designs based on botanical drawings traverse the wall behind the bed, while there is a colourful crochet throw ‘by my boyfriend David’s mother’, a pillow by Tibor on the bed, and fabric from her personal collection draped over the headboard. The silk rug, one of her own designs called ‘Ink Stripe’, evolved from an abstract felt-tip artwork she created inspired by American quilts. The landscape painting on the bedside table was found at a house clearance sale. Georgia shops everywhere, incorporating things that she likes with named and more expensive pieces. She confidently acknowledges the flat’s history through her choice of contemporary furniture and accessories and layers of luxurious rugs, while whimsical pieces reflect her professional interests. ‘British designers have an irreverent attitude to rules and are inherently creative thinkers,’ she says. ‘This has a lot to do with the fantastic art school tradition and the way young designers are taught to follow their instinct and develop a voice.’ This designer’s style comes through sensitivity to materials, colour, proportion, symmetry and the property itself, creating an interior that is modern and stylish. In Georgia’s words: ‘be confident, adventurous and trust your instinct. Don’t take your home too seriously.’ A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

W

hen House of Hackney founders Frieda Gormley and Javvy Royle first fell in love with Cornwall’s Trematon Castle, they never dreamed that they would soon be invited to decorate it in their own style. At the time it was leased by royal landscape gardeners Julian and Isabel Bannerman, who had transformed the grounds into what the Telegraph described as a ‘Cornish Pre-Raphelite fantasy’ – and now the house has been given a full House of Hackney makeover and is opening for a series of wellness retreats in a programme called the ‘Summer of Self-Love’. At the heart of Trematon stands a grand Georgian house overlooking the castle courtyard. Built in 1808, the 9-bedroom building was designed by Benjamin Tucker, who bought a 100-year-lease on the castle after it had fallen into ruins. Tucker was a follower of Sir John Soane, the influential British architect noted for his original interpretations of Neo-Classical style – and so the architecture of the house reflects Soane’s love of symmetrical, light-filled spaces. Since House of Hackney’s Frieda and Javvy have become its new custodians, the house has undergone an extensive renovation; one that celebrates the castle’s intriguing history while welcoming in the botanical beauty of the surrounding gardens. As Frieda and Javvy believe in the restorative virtues of colour, the palette for the interiors draws inspiration from the serene natural tones found in the ground’s flowers and foliage – think myriad greens, lilacs, yellows, clay-pinks and earthy reds. The house itself is painted a lichen-green as both an ode to Cornwall’s native moss and a symbol of the purity of its coastal air. Adorned in House of Hackney’s imaginative prints, the interiors also act as a miniature museum for irreverent British design. In keeping with the brand’s ethos of championing local factories and generationsold techniques, the décor is anchored by timeless yet

“The interiors act as a miniature museum for irreverent British design” characterful creations crafted by artisans. From the artwork to the lighting, everything is available to buy and take home with you (or purchase later via the House of Hackney website) as a memento of your stay. Luxurious yet comfortable, all rooms boast breathtaking views out on to the gardens. To ensure the deepest of sleeps, the super king-size beds will be either antique or four-posters handcrafted by Titchmarsh & Goodwin, all topped with traditionally made mattresses (filled with wool, cashmere and silk) by EPOC Handcrafted Beds. Each bed will then be dressed in fine linens by Peter Reed, woollen blankets by Johnstons of Elgin and, of course, House of Hackney cushions. Lining the house are exquisitely woven carpets and rugs, the fruits of a special collaboration between House of Hackney and Royal Warrant holders Axminster Carpets. In sympathy to the original plans for the house, the bathrooms are shared (with one bathroom per two bedrooms), all beautifully refurbished with classic Georgian-style bathware courtesy of Burlington. TREMATON: THE HISTORY Owned by the Duchy of Cornwall since 1337, Trematon Castle is a picture-postcard miniature Norman motteand-bailey castle and gatehouse, situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Tamar estuary. Sitting atop the ruins of an earlier Roman fort, the Castle was built by Robert, Count of Mortain to strengthen the hold of William the Conqueror following his triumph in the Battle of Hastings. And yet, given that Britain hasn’t been invaded since (save for the brief, failed expedition at Fishguard in 1797), the fortress has never seen battle.

Fantasia’ and ‘Wild Card’ even retains the original canopy bath. Mirrors are the only luxuries missing from the Castle of Trematon, as the intention is that guests spend their time looking inwardly instead. As the first in a series of getaways to be held at the Castle of Trematon, ‘The Summer of (Self)Love’ offers a carefully curated experience in a setting of untamed beauty. For a limited time from Wednesday 5th and Wednesday 19th August can check in to our B&B&B (that’s Bed & Breakfast & Beauty) for overnight

stays unlike anything else. Reviving the traditional B&B by infusing it with a distinctive and imaginative touch, you’ll have the chance to sleep in sumptuously designed bedrooms before waking up to a breakfast of locally sourced, vegetarian produce – and then spending your day soaking up the beauty of the castle’s surroundings. Running later in August until September the castle will be hosting four carefully curated restorative retreats, each revolving around a sensory wellness programme that harnesses the healing powers of the natural world alongside those of gifted practitioners.

Dried flowers are beautiful and long-lasting. Here's how to make your own dome jar display Words B E X PA R T R I D G E

G AT H E R

• A selection of dried flowers, seed heads and grasses including loose flower heads - I selected all the flowers that I was most proud of growing: celosia flamingo feather, pink rhodanthe, poppy budsand seed heads, glitter thistles and gomphrena • A glass dome jar with a wooden base • Horticultural scissors • A vintage frog pin I adore making these dome jars – they can capture a moment in time perfectly, like a wild flower meadow in summer, or here where I have used a selection of the home grown blooms I am most proud of growing this season. A positive reminder of the growing year. I use a frog pin to make mine, as they can be reused, and if you can find a vintage pin it will look beautiful in itself. If it’s a gift, you might want to secure the frog pin to the base of the dome with a dot of superglue. When selecting the materials, consider what you want to evoke – perhaps your garden in midsummer, or the beauty of the leaves turning in autumn (fall). I find this helps me with the structure and flow, almost as if I’m painting with flowers.

L E T ’ S G E T S TA R T E D

Begin by measuring the stems STEP 1 against the height of the dome jar and cut each one down so that it’s at least 1 cm (1/2 in) shorter than the distance between the base of the dome jar and its uppermost point.

Work from the middle outwards, placing the tallest and most prominent flower right in the middle of the frog pin. Working with the other materials, build up and around your central bloom. Depending on where you’re going to display your dome jar, it can be a front-facing design with all the tall flowers at the back, or one that can be viewed from any angle. Go with the flow of the flowers, a higgledy-piggledy approach is a perfect representation of nature and gives the impression of a garden inside a dome. Give each flower room to breathe and be taken in, and make sure that you bring some interest to draw the eyes to the bottom of the display. Cut tips of long flowers off to use as filler, dot dried leaves among the flowers as a soft gap-filler, and consider scattering seeds or petals across the wooden bottom for added interest. STEP 2

to reuse both the pin and dome base again in separate makes. For a dramatic take, cram the jar full of statuesque flowers such as teasel heads, palm leaves and other graphic dried flowers.

Gently place the glass dome over the top of the flowers, taking care to not catch any stems as you do so. The flowers can remain under the glass for years and years free from dust and any risk of damp damage. STEP 3

E X T R A I N S P I R AT I O N

I’ve also used natural clay as a base for this – choose one that air-dries quickly to avoid the stems of the flowers rotting. If you are creating this for yourself at home, don’t use superglue to attach the frog pin, because then you will be able

f having a pizza oven in your garden sounds like too complicated a prospect, you haven’t met the Ooni. These pizza ovens are designed to be accessible, stylish and compact as well as easy to use and affordable. We tested the new Frya model, a wood-fired oven that promises to heat up in 15 minutes thanks to its efficient consumption of wood pellets. Temperature is key here and among Ooni’s available accessories is a handy infra red thermometer – because in order to achieve the ideal 60-second pizza, it has to be right. And it’s simple: tip the pellets in, light them up and there you are. Of course it’s a one in/one out situation, which means that making pizzas for a crowd requires someone to quickly become expert – but even our first attempts are successful, producing evenly cooked, high-class 12 inch pizzas. The Ooni comes with lots of recipes and guidance, making it an unintimidating and user-friendly option. The Frya claims to be portable, which at 10kg it could be, though it’s not something you’d casually take to the park. But why bother? It’s an excellent addition to any garden or even a small balcony. TRAEGER PRO 575

BIG Smoke Absolutely tests out the ultimate home grill By ABBIE SCHOFIELD

E

ver wondered how many beers it takes to set up a grill? Quite a few, according to Traeger’s manual, which tells you how many to drink during set-up of its legendary wood pellet grill. While two people are needed, the assembly process is pretty easy, setting the precedent for the whole Traeger experience - it’s not only a seriously good grill but it’s ridiculously convenient. One outstanding feature is that it connects to wifi, so you can place your meat on the grill, set the desired internal temperature and your phone will alert you when your meat is ready. There’s no constantly checking the grill with the dreaded feeling that you’re burning everything to a crisp. The wood pellets give everything a delicious smoky flavour, although despite being wood-fired, not much smoke comes out of the chimney thanks to the internal fan that circulates the heat and controls the temperature.

PRIME RIB ROAST

“The grill connects to the wifi, so your phone will alert you when the meat is ready” I cook baby back ribs with a homemade rub and short ribs with the Traeger coffee rub. Both take six to seven hours to slowly perfect, with outstanding results on par with leading barbecue restaurants. The Traeger rub gives the meat a rich flavour and some heat thanks to a mix of garlic, paprika, black pepper, coffee and cocoa. Cleaning the grill couldn’t be easier. As it’s a wood pellet oven, there’s no mess - a simple tray or heavy duty tin foil needs to be replaced over the heat protector between uses. Having been a Weber fan for years, I’m now a converted smoker. Traeger has changed my grilling game for good.

Continue to cook for 3 to 4 hours or until cooked to desired internal temperature, 50˚C for rare, 55˚C for medium rare, 60˚C for medium or 65˚C for well done. Begin checking the internal temperature in 30 minutes increments with an instant-read thermometer throughout the duration of the cook. Cook time will vary based on the size of your roast and desired finished temperature. • Remove from grill and let rest 30 minutes at room temperature before carving.

S H I N E O N German design company markilux on how awnings can add to your outdoor living space By EVE HERBERT

A

wnings are usually simple, practical and discreet. However markilux have made a point of designing stylish metallic awnings that make a statement no matter what the style of your home.

“Earthy tones of copper, bronze and brass fit in well with older buildings and country houses”

CHOOSING COLOURS MADE SIMPLE  markilux’s design-winning awning models MX-3, MX-1 and MX-1 compact are now available in new metallic colourways with paint containing real metal. To ensure customers find the perfect awning to suit their home, the Selection MX range offers ten recommended colour combinations of panel, housing and awning cover. The MX-3 also comes in eight additional tonal options from the Special Architecture edition. This edition focuses on vibrant shades of previous popular colours, which are still also available, and on non-colour accents. Naturally, customers can arrange all colours individually to suit their own particular taste in the range offered. This means everyone can express their preference for special colour effects and materials in their own personal style, right down to their awning.

CLASSIC  The high metal content in markilux’s new designs means the special paints naturally develop an attractive, almost artistic patina the older they get. This rustic charm, encased in a modern awning design, particularly suits older buildings and country house architecture. Radiant earthy tones of copper, bronze and brass fit in well with traditional homes, unlike the usual canvas awnings.

COLOURFUL  A number of elegant colours are available for those looking to add a splash of brightness into their homes. Metallic shades in warm ruby red and amber, emerald green and pebble beige are designed to harmonise with the colours and materials of your garden, patio and furniture so that your outdoor living space looks just as well-thought out as the indoor.

MODERN  Modern homes can opt for metallic awnings that are more monochromatic in style, such as the black and silver or white and silver effect paint with a metallic grain. How live online learning boosts children’s technological confidence By E L I Z A B E T H T W E E DA L E

H

ave you been juggling working from home/ homeschooling/ feeding everyone all day every day/staying positive? We can’t underestimate the multiple effects of this difficult time - but we can look to see if there is anything to be learned - and in our case from an educational perspective. We at Cypher dramatically changed the way we work over the lockdown period. Our first thoughts were with the children. We are educators, and spend our time designing lessons that will intrigue and excite children to learn to code and delivering them to all sorts of children. We used to do that only at in-person holiday camps. We were determined that this pandemic, scary enough on its own, would not stop kids being inspired and optimistic about their future. KIDS & EDUCATION • ONLINE

One week before lockdown, and two weeks before our scheduled Easter holiday camps were due to start, we made the decision to switch all our camps to Live Online. We cut the camp down to 90-minutes, committed to a teacher being present and visible throughout all the sessions, kept class sizes small, 4-6 students, and made four sessions a day to fit with parents daily schedules. So, how did this work out? We were both amazed and extremely pleased that both parents and children took to the new offer really well. Parents now at home, with children to entertain all day, were immensely grateful. Kids just loved the great coding content. We have been thrilled to see how enthusiastic our online learners have been. The technological advancements made by our students have been unprecedented, and unlike anything we've seen before.

“OFFERING OUR CAMPS ONLINE HAS BEEN HUGELY BENEFICIAL FOR MANY” “Having gone through the course I can see that the difference in having an exceptional teacher teaching live, versus a non-live course is colossal. He is engaging with it, and loving it so much more than he would with a non-live course.” Mother of a Kilo coder, age 6

Looking ahead to the new normal, Live OnLine will remain part of our camps portfolio as we head towards defining what our postlockdown life will look like. Offering our camps online has been hugely beneficial for many students, eliminating any geographical barriers and extending our reach way beyond London with children attending from France, Portugal, Ireland, UAE, the Philippines and the USA. It has also allowed us to open our doors even more widely, running our free Cypher Starters sessions every Thursday afternoon to encourage a wider interest in learning to code and introduce a broad range of children to computational thinking. This summer we are running our most intensive range of Live Online camps - and making sure that children have the opportunity to work through some of the issues around the effects of Covid-19 while learning about some of the benefits it has brought. We have three creative themes that rotate over the 8 weeks of the holidays. Kids will be learning to code as they plunge deep under the virtual sea and get a submarine view of the sea floor - find out just how long a whale can hold its breath, what effects the lockdown has had on marine life and explore ways to help save our oceans Kids today really care about the environment. The few benefits of the lockdown, like

lower air pollution and clearer seas, have opened our eyes to the possibility that our actions can make a difference. Join us to explore environmental issues from re-wilding to recycling, plants to eat to planting trees - our students will be finding out what role code has to play in making this planet a greener, safer place Critical to this generation’s success in the future is that they grasp the benefits and advantages of being fluent in computational thinking. This intellectual process allows people to solve problems and instruct computers to operate tasks, to create code. It enables our future leaders to be able to communicate effectively with technology experts, programmers and people all across the globe. Our philosophy is all about engaging children, as young as 5, with computational concepts that can open up a world of possibilities. By teaching broadly through creative themes rather than single coding languages in silos, we make technology relevant to every child and give them the confidence to be more imaginative and experimental.

Lockdown LEARNING

The Headteacher of Highgate discusses some of the lessons learned during virtual school about students’ independent learning capacity and what makes a real community

I

t has become something of a standard joke between me and my sonorously-voiced (Welsh) Head of Junior School that I could probably hear his voice without the aid of Zoom or MS Teams or Skype, given that he lives two doors down the road to me. In fact, I have found it comforting that he isn’t ever actually very far away even if we haven’t been allowed to meet face-to-face during ‘lockdown’! When a colleague suggested that we should re-name our remote learning programme ‘Highgate@Home’, I jumped at the idea: enforced physical separation shouldn’t mean that we feel remote when, in fact, technology is making it so easy to stay in touch. What does Highgate@Home look like? Well, we use a learning platform which allows us to upload documents and user-friendly instructions, together with narrated PowerPoint presentations, quizzes and short videos, as the basis of the self-directed learning that makes up a proportion of each pupil’s daily diet. In a live lesson, pupils can switch from the learning platform to a virtual classroom environment. In the virtual classroom the teacher can speak to the entire class (muting the pupils’ microphones so that not everyone speaks at once) or to individuals. The teacher can take questions or invite them through a chat channel. Lessons are recorded, which means that late-comers or absentees can follow later on. While Highgate@Home has been a temporary substitute for bricksand-mortar school, it has also been sharpening pupils’ understanding of what they can always do at home to optimise the time they spend with teacher. Homework becomes not just work you do at home but work best done at home, and work done in class

PUPILS AT HIGHGATE

is collaborative. Class work enables risk-taking – and teacher is there to guide, direct, prompt, challenge and, when necessary, rescue! Adaptive quizzes inject pace and palliative diversion and open children’s minds to the untapped potential of memory and brain power. In short, the lockdown-led need to harness technology is opening adults’ eyes to what may accelerate children’s independence. Some may now ask whether coming to school will ever seem as important if so much can be achieved at home. What we quickly realised, however, was what would be missing if only lessons were on the menu. We have added a ‘daily dose’ of extra-curricular activities and tutor time, including chapel services, assemblies, suggested ‘shelf-help’ recreational reading, fitness and relaxation routines. Tutors clock in once a week with each of their pupils to

check how things are going – the human touch still matters. What is my take-away from the attractions and temptations of technology and homebased learning? Brilliant in an emergency; transformative in developing a child’s independence; exciting in side-stepping timefilling drudgery. But it is a complement to, not a substitute for, life in a community.

THE NEW LOOK St Dunstan’s College announces a new format for upcoming open events

S

t Dunstan’s College in Catford, south London, has taken the decision that open events planned for September to November 2020 can no longer go ahead in their usual format following the Coronavirus pandemic. Last year, the College welcomed more than 2,000 individuals across six major events; however, the safety of staff, pupils and visiting families is paramount. The College is delighted to announce that it will be launching a series of smaller ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ events that will allow prospective families to visit the site safely and following social distancing guidelines. There will also be a series of virtual events with the leadership team for prospective families to join. Speaking about the new format, Director of Marketing, Admissions and Development, Isabelle Blake-James explained: ‘We are delighted to still be able to offer prospective families a chance to visit the College site and experience a taste of life at St Dunstan’s. ‘We are busy planning the newlook open events and can’t wait to

“New facilities will include state-ofthe-art classrooms and laboratories, plus new outdoor learning spaces”

share with prospective families.’ Open events planned for the autumn come at an exciting time for St Dunstan’s, as in September 2021 a new Junior School building, STEM Centre and Sixth Form Centre will open. The new facilities will include stateof-the-art classrooms and laboratories, new outdoor learning spaces and a Sixth Form café. The developments will also include a performing arts centre and a new outdoor space for pupils, which they have voted to call The Plaza.

The College was closed for most pupils since the lockdown started in March, however, pupils from Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 returned on 1 June following government advice. During the Coronavirus crisis, the College has been producing PPE for local hospitals, hospices and GP surgeries and has remained open for children of key workers. Further details about ‘Discover St Dunstan’s’ will be announced in due course. Visit the website to find out more: stdunstans.org.uk A B S O L U T E LY. L O N D O N

From that starting point, the book tackles bigger themes such as the health of our planet and the unseen dangers that may be threatening us all. Told in flashback, it intrigues from its opening page and is chilling in its deadpan delivery. Cove

D

aios Cove is a bit of a hidden gem - whether a family or couple, it caters for all. We went as a family of four - our first trip with the baby. Our holiday didn’t start particularly well and with a rather stressful journey, I started to wonder if we had made a mistake. We were novices at travelling with an extra child. However, as soon as we pulled up to Daios Cove, my anxiety was lifted and we started to feel excited as we were greeted by a friendly but smart team who offered cool flannels and a drink, as well as a stroll onto the 360 viewing deck overlooking the resort. The resort is set in a secluded private cove, overlooking the sparkling azure Mediterranean. The intimate layout creates an instant feeling of serenity. The showstopping signature piece is the funicular railway, which smoothly slides up and

160

down the clifftop, transporting guests around the resort while allowing them to admire the stunning views. At the bottom of the hill cove is a private beach that’s particularly popular with families. It isn’t huge, but the sea is warm and shallow, there are plenty of beds and a well-stocked beach bar for snacks and refreshments. For those that prefer to keep the sand at bay and relax by a pool, there is a sizeable one, complete with infinity view and bar. The only downside to being in the cove is that it can be a bit windy, and we happened to be there during a particularly windy period when all the umbrellas had to be down, so shade was limited. In terms of accommodation, rooms are very spacious. I had been slightly concerned about us all squeezing into a family room, but our deluxe sea-view room did not feel compromised with two cots and king-size bed. It had an outdoor area with private pool, marble fitted bathroom,

sofa area and even an audio system in the bathroom. The hotel has 300 rooms, villas and suites, most of them featuring a private pool and large decking area, perfect for privacy and for letting your little one take a few tentative strokes if, like ours, they’re still a bit nervous in the water. In terms of entertainment, you don’t need to leave the resort (and we didn’t), with a spa that includes an indoor saltwater infinity pool with sea views, fitness studios, a second pool with hydro jets, a Finnish sauna and chromatherapy showers. There is a hairdressing salon, some shops, a cinema and a beauty studio. There are also sporting options ranging from water activities (water-skiing, pedalos, canoeing, scuba diving) to Pilates, yoga and fitness classes. You can be as active or as inactive as you like. Should you wish to venture out, Crete has many more stunning beaches, unique heritage sites and bustling towns – plus at Daios Cove you are only a short drive away from Agios Nicolas in Lasithi, home to the fortress of Spinalonga. Back at the resort, we started to wonder

“The showstopping funicular railway slides smoothly up the clifftop”

about entertainment for the little ones. That's where the kids club comes in. All young guests are invited to attend the resort’s Creche Club (from four months to four years) or Children’s Club (four to 12 years), both of which are run by a team of childcare experts qualified to UK standards and regulations. They offer morning or afternoon sessions that cost 40 euros each. On day two we (rather guiltily) dropped off our two-year old at the creche for the morning session, keeping the baby with us. We took it in turns to spend a bit of time in the spa (25 euros per person), while one of us had the baby. Three hours later, feeling very relaxed, we went to pick up our daughter. Having won over the staff at the creche, she was a happy camper, and we immediately booked the creche again. Having the opportunity to get just one or

two mornings to relax while on holiday is a game-changer and was definitely needed after the fraught plane journey. In terms of food, there is an impressive buffet breakfast served in the Pangea restaurant. It includes cooked staples and Cretan specialities such as syrupy local jams, plus all the international hot dishes, cereals, pancakes etc. There are separate dining rooms for families which means your baby can happily drop all her food on the floor while the child-free sit in peace. Those travelling without children may prefer Ocean, which offers sophisticated Mediterranean cuisine, and Taverna, a Greek restaurant with the most spectacular views over the cove. High chairs are available in all three and staff will happily heat milk or modify dishes should you need. Snacks and cocktails are also served in the Beach Bar. If an evening drink is what you are after, the best place is the glass-walled Crystal Box bar, or we would often sit on our private outdoor area, sipping on wine or indulging in room service and enjoying the stunning view. As our time at Daios Cove drew to a close, I reflected on my initial anxieties. Although holidays can be a challenge with young children, this unique resort combines top facilities, extraordinary beauty and luxury supported by complete family friendliness. You can’t hope for more than that.

OPI N ION John Martin of John Martin Estates in Ealing gives his take on the property market with the benefit of over 30 years in the industry

A

s I began preparing this article, I read my last piece from February 2020 and was tempted to run it again, merely substituting coronavirus for the reference to the snap general election! Why? Well, I talked about a new sense of confidence in the market, hope that the March budget would bring stamp duty changes and my delight, in my capacity as a judge in the Great British High Street Awards, to see our amazing high streets with their sense of community and positivity of business owners. So, here we are again, six months on, with our lives effectively put on hold for three to four months. Since our return to the office, after a slow start for a few weeks, we have seen activity in the market, both with sales and particularly lettings and a Summer Statement with the temporary changes in stamp duty until 31st March 2021. Many have also realised the true value of their local high streets in terms of essential shopping

during lockdown but even more now as we see the return to the "new normal". I have been asked many times if we managed to "have a rest" during lockdown. This is, of course, because not everyone appreciates that small independent agencies, in particular, do not operate solely on the basis of sales and lettings but with a large property management function. We ran everything from home until early June and although we were in the fortunate position to have completed a number of our transactions just before lockdown, we did have some sales to "nurse" through the period. The management work, however, increased especially regarding rent payment issues with negotiations to find suitable solutions for both parties. Maintenance continued, starting with a boiler replacement on day two of lockdown! The main priority since our return has been ensuring compliance with the guidance in respect of safety for all, both at the office and for viewings. I am pleased to hear compliments from clients and applicants regarding

“Since our return to the office, we have seen activity in the market” our thoroughness in our COVID safety procedures but equally disappointed to hear that members of our industry are failing to follow simple guidance in terms of everyone, including us, wearing mask and gloves for appointments and a strict cleaning regime. It is not difficult, merely more time consuming, but essential. So where do we go from here? The change to stamp duty is an encouraging start but it is too early to see any clear results. We must remember that furlough continues - will lenders fund someone on furlough or landlords consider someone who may be redundant in a few months? Until that sector is more certain of their position, the property market will not fully bounce back. We need everyone to play their part - to return safely to our high streets and to office working and to see the economy, and with it the property market, recover. Whilst this may not be like any of the number of recessions I have seen in my 25 years as a business owner, the same steely determination and resilience is what will see us through.
