as The Apprentice had its day? Given his connections to Essex, we would always back Lord Sugar, but watching the current series it feels a little stuck in 2015, while innovative shows like Traitors has taken over the water cooler slot. Looking back at what the show was is rather apt as this month we catch up with Dr Leah Totton, who won the show over a decade ago now. Where most of the winners are no longer in partnership with Lord Sugar, Dr Totton remains in tandem with the business supremo, and her Loughton clinic is thriving. We find out what the show means to her today. Talking business is rather apt as Absolutely also sat down with six leading female entrepreneurs in Essex, in a special celebration to mark International Women's Day this month. All have inspiring stories to tell. Enjoy the issue!

Acting OUT

Damian Lewis showcases his musical talents on 10 March at Palace Theatre, Southend

‘Mission Creep’ is a thoughtful collection of rootsy, rock and jazztinged songs by Damian Lewis that reveals a deep love of music, and a deep need to communicate. The album’s origin story begins when Damian, after leaving school, swapped the rigorous day-today regime that had dominated his life for 10 years for something altogether less structured. He took to the road with his guitar and went busking through continental Europe. This experience has stayed with Damian ever since and is reflected in his debut album. Acting of course took over and took off. Damian kept his hand in, playing the odd wrap party as part of a scratch band, but the idea of actually making a record only came to him during lockdown. With the time and space away from a busy acting schedule, the star was able to throw himself into playing and writing songs, and the ideas started to flow. Damian was taken back to the time he played the guitar every day, but with the additional maturity and experience that an eventful life has given him. A festival appearance at Wilderness last year led to more live shows. Packed gigs at London’s Omeara, Koko, the Tabernacle and Hoxton Hall resulted in glowing reviews from the crowds and the critics who described Damian as “a compelling performer apparently in his element”.

Changing

FACES The Apprentice Series 9 winner Dr Leah Totton shares what it’s like to work with Essex business partner Lord Alan Sugar as she celebrates 10 years in the cosmetics industry By REBECCA PITCAIRN

I

t’s been over a decade since Dr Leah Totton embarked on a business partnership with Lord Alan Sugar, after winning series 9 of the hit BBC show The Apprentice in 2013. Despite having no background in business, the then 25-year-old former NHS A&E doctor, originally from Londonderry in Northern Ireland, impressed the business tycoon with her plans for an accessible cosmetics clinic. And while many a business plan has been laughed out of the boardroom over the years, Lord Sugar embraced Dr Leah’s vision to establish a doctor-led, ethical cosmetic clinic that would redefine safety in the UK cosmetic industry. Eleven years on and the somewhat unlikely pair remain in business together (despite the majority of other The Apprentice partnerships ending) and have opened three doctor-led clinics – in Baker Street, Moregate and Loughton – and launched a skincare brand. Last month they celebrated the 10th anniversary of the opening of their first clinic, just as series 18 of The Apprentice hit our screens. “I think that being one of the early adopters of doctor-led cosmetics certainly helped the brand get off its feet, but we’ve worked really hard to remain at the forefront and I think that’s testament to the longevity of the business,” Dr Leah says. “Lord Sugar is wonderful as a business partner, but more

18

so for me as a mentor because I didn’t come from a business background. I think I’m one of only three winners still in business with him: there’s me, Tom (Pellereau, from series seven) and Ricky (Martin, from series eight).” Not that Dr Leah has had a completely seamless ride. At the time she won the show, Lord Alan received a lot of criticism for backing a Botox business. “There was a huge backlash in the press,” Dr Leah remembers. “Botox and injectables weren’t mainstream at that time and there was a real stigma around women, and men, undergoing cosmetic treatment. The industry was also very polarised – you had these high-end, esteemed plastic surgeons offering a bit of Botox alongside a face lift, and then lay people working out of a beauticians or doing at-home treatments, and there was nothing in that middle space – a doctor who could offer ethical treatments in a clinical environment at an affordable price.” There was also less regulation back then, she says. Patient safety and elevating standards within the medical aesthetics industry is something Dr Leah is hugely passionate about and, together with other leaders in the industry, has lobbied for a law that will redefine safety of certain cosmetic procedures – regulation that she hopes will come into force by 2026. “Patient education has come on leaps and bounds, but there is still work to be done,” she adds. “One of the reasons I came into

this industry in the first place was when my aunt had a dermal filler treatment and it went badly wrong. Unfortunately, the person who administered the filler wouldn’t help and, because there is no regulation, my aunt couldn’t get any compensation. “From a legal standpoint, as a lay person with no medical training, you can buy dermal filler online. It’s not a prescription-only drug, which in my opinion it should be because of the risks involved with injecting. We’re talking about tissue necrosis and even blindness. Yet it would be perfectly legal for you to inject me with dermal filler without any legal consequence of harm or injury as a result.” Dr Leah believes it is this commitment to educating patients on how to make informed decisions about cosmetic treatments that has made a huge contribution to her brand’s success, and one of the reasons it was awarded Most Trusted Cosmetic Clinic in the UK last year.

“That was a real pinch-me moment,” she smiles. “The business has done very well financially, and that’s something I’m extremely grateful for, but what was more important for me was to ensure we delivered on our vision, to bring that medical influence to the mid-range price point, to make safe and ethical cosmetic treatments performed by a doctor accessible and affordable – and that award was really testament to that.” Achieving the accolade has somehow meant more to her now she has a daughter, Lilah, 2, who was also the catalyst for ensuring her skincare brand, which she launched with Lord Sugar while pregnant in 2022, was suitable for mums-to be. The line, which includes a cleanser and moisturiser with an eye cream in the pipeline, is also vegan-friendly accredited and comes in recyclable packaging. “The skincare brand has been in the making for about seven years, but I’m a bit of a perfectionist and just wanted it to be right,” Dr

DR LEAH HAS CHAMPIONED REGULATION IN THE INDUSTRY

Leah admits. “I was shocked at how difficult it was to find good skin products that were safe to use during pregnancy, breastfeeding and IVF; when you’re pregnant, a new mum or going through fertility treatment, you have enough to worry about so that was really important to me.” Now back at work after taking maternity leave for five months and then a phased return, Dr Leah says she feels privileged that she is able to balance motherhood and work and enjoys spending time at all of her clinics each week. “I’m at the Essex clinic at least once a week – it’s a really busy clinic and we’ve built an amazingly loyal client base since we opened in Loughton seven years ago,” she says. “Plus, it’s on such a great High Street, I love going for after work dinners at places like Sheesh and Quindici.” It feels quite a world away from her introduction to business back on The Apprentice. Now, looking back on that time and how far she has come, is applying for the show something she’d recommend to her daughter if it still exists in the future? “Absolutely,” she says, unequivocally. “For me it was life-changing. I got a fantastic amount of experience out of it, an amazing business partner and have had an exceptional career.” drleah.co.uk

Q When did the story of the

family farm begin?

LAURA: We both come from farming families,

so it’s difficult to give a precise beginning! Robert drove tractors as soon as his feet could hit the pedals, and my sister and I used to help my dad with the harvest when we were young, picking up potatoes after his harvester. We met at Young Farmers when we were teenagers and hit it off – despite Robert being allergic to horses and me wanting to spend every minute I could around them! We started our own farm in 2004 with just a few acres and have grown it from that to over 2,500 acres and a business that employs over 50 people.

Q What inspired Fairfields Farm Crisps? ROBERT: Farming is a fantastic profession,

GET TO KNOW…

Robert & Laura

but there are so many things that make it difficult to be profitable – not least the Great British weather, which has been increasingly unpredictable over the past few years. We knew we could grow exceptional crisping varieties of potatoes here, because the land is just right, and so we made a leap of faith, first getting our potatoes made into crisps in another factory, and then in 2012 opening our own right here, so we could manage every part of the process. LAURA: It was a real ground-up effort that started with us taking a few flavours to local shows, where visitors could vote on the flavours they thought we should launch with. We started with four and are about to expand to nine in the next few months. Our success is in no small part owed to the local businesses that have supported us along the way, including the East of England Co-op, which was our first retail stockist, as well as the many farm shops, pubs and cafés who welcomed us with open arms. Q What makes you different? LAURA: When it comes to our crisps, we

grow the potatoes we cook. Our crisps aren’t just one product of many that we make. The quality of the core ingredient (the potato) matters more to us than they do to, say, one of the large corporates. We know everything about the potatoes – which field they came from, how to adjust the fryer to cook each variety perfectly… everything. All the process from field to packet is carried out here at the farm, so every pack that leaves us is created to our own exact specifications. Q What plans do you have in

place for the rest of 2024?

ROBERT: We have a very busy year planned!

We plan to invest more into the factory to be able to make more crisps, more efficiently, but still in the traditional handcooked batch frying method we use currently. We sold more crisps last year than ever before, and we need to make sure we have room to grow. We’re also launching a brand-new flavour in late spring, so keep an eye out for that. Q Does the whole family love

being involved in the farm?

LAURA: Just like with Robert and I growing

up, being born into this environment has become a way of life for our kids, Angus and Immy. Angus is old enough to drive a tractor now, which he would happily leave school for if we let him, and Immy has an incredible eye for detail. We don’t launch any flavour or change any packaging without her say so!

Q Do you get much time off,

or is it a full-on job?

ROBERT: Time off? Rarely! We got away for

a week at Christmas, which was a rarity. The thing is, I genuinely love my work and I miss it when I’m away. I get up early, finish late and may occasionally watch absolute rubbish on TV in between that and going to sleep for a bit. LAURA: It’s part of the deal when you run a farm, isn’t it? There is always something to do, something to check. Because we’re both from the same background, we both know how important it is. And yes, he does watch absolute rubbish on the TV. Q You are based close to Colchester – do

you visit when you do get time off?

LAURA: I do like to get away for the occasional

coffee date with friends – when time allows! The kids in particular love the toasties at TOAST in Colchester. I love their coconut lattes and they have the most incredible cakes there. We’re lucky because we live right next to Dedham Vale and get to explore the beautiful countryside there. There are so many wonderful little villages in our part of Essex. Fordham has superb views and rolling hills. Chappel and Wakes Colne are really charming too. Bures is the next village along from our farm and there’s a newly opened tearoom. Our sales team keeps urging me to pay a visit so that’s next on the list.

very mother deserves to be spoilt on Mother’s Day – luckily, there are some amazing events taking place across Essex so you can do exactly that. Visit Essex, the county’s tourism body, has put together their top 10 things to do with loved ones this Mother’s Day…

Experience by candlelight

Looking for a unique experience to share with your Mum? Why not join the brilliant Eden Falconry for a magical candlelit owl encounter at Hedingham Castle. The evening will begin just after sunset for a breathtaking atmosphere – and the perfect time to step into the nocturnal world of owls. Meet the feathered members of the flying team and be given the rare opportunity to hold and fly the owls yourself, with guidance from the expert falconers. This exclusive experience can only accommodate a small number of guests, so make sure you don’t miss out (Sunday 10 March, £30pp).

Spring walks with the family

ALEC’S RESTAURANT

As we start to welcome the warmer weather, take your loved ones to Warley Place Nature Reserve in Brentwood. Set in 25 acres, the reserve is maintained by Essex Wildlife Trust and is home to one of Essex’s best spring spectacles. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around the reserve and let your senses do the rest – admire the wonderful daffodils, crocuses,

snowdrops and bluebells in bloom, hear birds singing and bees buzzing around pollinating flowers. Their café is a great spot for an afternoon tea after enjoying what the gardens have to offer (Feb–June, suggested admission donation is £3pp).

For the super mum…

CHARLOTTE FULLER

Charlotte Fuller BUS I NE S S : Managing Director,

Raffingers Marketing Agency W E B S I TE : raffingers.co.uk

Q Before working at your

business, what was your working background? A Before working at Raffingers Marketing Agency, I started my career as a marketing Assistant in 2004, and I can confidently say that I’ve climbed the ranks from the bottom up over the last 20 years, which has given me a unique perspective on the industry and the needs of our clients. Q What inspired you to

work at your business? A As a marketing generalist, I’ve had the privilege of working with clients in a range of sectors and industries, and I just can’t get enough of it! I’m constantly inspired by the unique challenges that each client brings, and I love being able to tailor my skills and

knowledge to create bespoke strategies and campaigns. Q What do you think makes you different? A Aside from my fantastic sense of humour?! I pride myself on being able to truly understand the needs of my clients and deliver results that exceed their expectations. Plus, with my years of experience and expertise, I’m able to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to the latest marketing trends and technologies. I will always give clients my honest opinion, if I don’t think something will work or isn’t quite right, I will always give direct advice. Q How was 2023 for you? A To be honest, 2023 was quite a

ride for me. I made the transition from being the Head of Marketing to becoming a Partner at a different firm, which allowed me to take on a more strategic role in my work. With this new perspective, I was able to review my approach, come up with solid strategies, and make progress in improving my personal brand on social media.

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A Let’s just say that we’re not resting on our laurels! We’re always looking for new and exciting ways to help our clients achieve their goals, and we’ve got some exciting new services and strategies in the works… Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A On a personal level, my hopes and dreams for 2024 are pretty simple: to continue to grow and learn both personally and professionally, and to be the best possible role model for my children. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A I’m looking forward to taking a much-needed family holiday to Greece this summer, and just trying to crack on going to the gym four times a week, getting that summer body ready. We also have just welcomed a furry miniature Frenchie to the family, so I’m looking forward to getting him fully potty trained! A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Q Before launching your business,

what was your working background?

A My journey in the design world started

as a graphic designer. I worked in various media sectors, including newspapers, fashion, and lifestyle magazines. From media I ventured into the public relations industry, collaborating with esteemed UK and international brands, I utilised my design and media proficiency to elevate brands' and establish a deep connection with their target audience. Q What inspired you to

launch your business?

A I love design and a thoroughbred

creative who really enjoys everything visual. After my dad passed away, a pivotal moment that altered my perspective on life, brought a surge of urgency – not to wait for the 'right moment', but to embrace life and without hesitation. I needed to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way, honouring his legacy by living fully and passionately and doing what I love best. Q What do you think

makes you different? A My experience in the magazine and public relations sectors has been instrumental in refining my understanding of the relationship

30

between graphic design and powerful imagery. In the world of beauty, fashion and lifestyle publications, my creative skills in visual communication accelerated, learning how to create and produce amazing imagery/shoots and using graphic design skills to speak volumes. The journey has been a testament to the profound impact that thoughtful design and imagery can have in creating designs that captivate and engage. Q Looking back, how was 2023 for you? A The year 2023 brought about a series of exciting developments for our company. To accommodate our growing team, we relocated to larger studios in Loughton, where we now have a designated space for design and production, as well as a spacious studio for photo-shoots and videography. Our hard work paid off when a new skincare range we had spent two years developing was launched in March and went on to receive two prestigious awards in the beauty industry. As the year came to a close, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborate with two prominent UK brands who are soon to launch. Q Are you introducing

anything new for 2024?

A Thanks to social media and its

constantly evolving industry, we now have an amazing team of content creators who are dedicated in creating content for businesses of all sizes. It's wonderful to see how everything falls into place and we genuinely have a blast whipping up fresh ideas every single day.

Q When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up? A Well that’s a question. As a very young mummy I didn't give it much thought, although I had a passion for nursing and caring. I worked voluntarily in mental health, when I emigrated from North to South and worked in a NHS mental health hospital for many years which I loved, making lifelong friends on this journey called life. Within these times was always a passion for colour, not a follower of the trends – drawn to leopard print orange, and vibrant colours. Q Was there a particular ‘Sliding Doors’ moment that shaped your career? A Sliding doors or the slippery slope of a failed marriage… I became a single mummy, circumstances and life’s paths often change direction – I say to my friends and family I believe you may not always like it but there’s a plan. Believe in your superpower – what’s that ? It’s you! Now after 28 years of trading, I’m super proud of my team, our brand and our care of each and every customer. We carry through old fashioned values, we are a team and a family. Q Tell us about the business you run today? A Benems is an anagram of my children's names (Emma and Ben). Twenty eight years on and what a rollercoaster ride, not least with many challenges. But believe in the you, be honest, be kind, work hard, don’t ask of anyone something you wouldn’t do yourself, and treat every customer and potential order with the ‘you are important to us’. Seeing the customers returning room after room, home move after home move, means we got it right – plus now it’s the next generation being introduced to the Benems experience by parents and grandparents. It’s heart warming and makes me feel proud as a woman to run a business in a male dominated industry, especially when I started. Q Out of work, where or when are you happiest? A Family and friends. I like hosting, I love a meal out with any combination of the above – and then the reward of a holiday, creating memories, is the bonus.

“NOW AFTER 28 YEARS OF TRADING, I AM SUPER PROUD OF MY TEAM”

Q How do you ensure a work/life balance? A Socialising is a big part of my life, as are family – and only then do I really switch off. Unless I’m doing marketing, grappling and learning social media platforms to showcase our wares – or decorating at home, changing and adding colour is most definitely one of my favourite things that makes me smile. Q If you could go back in time and offer yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? A Always believe in yourself when others doubted. Never stop learning. Don’t waste time waiting for someone to change – one life make it count. Don’t ever be afraid to try – trying is how you are going to learn things that make you smarter, wiser, and stronger. And don’t worry about failing because it’s not a failure if you learned something that can make you better as you move ahead. Believe in your worth and be kind!

without any mourners present. These companies tend to invest heavily in digital advertising and this has prompted us to evolve our own marketing strategy to help us remain visible in an increasingly competitive landscape.

Q What inspired you to work at your business? A Family. My great great grandfather, George White, founded this funeral business in 1888. When our dad passed away unexpectedly a couple of years ago, my sisters and I inherited the business. It’s a privilege, albeit a slightly daunting one, to take the reins of a business that has prospered for over 135 years.

Q What do you think makes you different? A People are at the heart of what we do and clear communication is really important to us. Families that come to us are usually stricken with grief and apprehensive about the unfamiliar process of arranging a funeral. Our amazing team are naturally compassionate and supportive, but they are also adept at breaking the process down into simple steps. By explaining the available options and being totally transparent about our prices, we hope to remove some of the anxiety and make the experience more manageable.

Q Looking back, how was 2023 for you? A Last year was rewarding and challenging in equal measures. In July, we helped to organise a funeral at Westminster Abbey, one of the largest that Harold White has ever been involved with. It was a terribly sad day, but the service ran smoothly and we were honoured to be asked by the family. As for challenges, the last 18 months has seen a significant increase in the number of online companies offering direct cremations, i.e. funeral services which happen behind closed doors

Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A I’m happiest when spending time with my family, and especially my two daughters. They’re young teenagers so I’m relishing every moment because I know it won’t be long before they decide to opt-out of cuddles on the sofa and family holidays! A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

continue being happy and healthy and wish the same for my family. If it’s about a personal dream for the year, floating on an inflatable lilo with a cocktail in hand out in the Caribbean would be nice, but we’ll have to see about that one.

Q How was 2023 for you? A I would say 2023 was a very tough year

Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A I think I would have to say that this year it would mainly be that my daughter will hopefully be starting her training to join the police force later on in the year, which is a big step. My son will finish school and will be starting a new and exciting chapter in college, so new beginnings with the children this year. It’s also my son’s 16th birthday and my daughter’s 21st birthday this year so those will be nice to celebrate.

Q Before The Creek, what was your working background? A Before running the business my area of expertise was in a school working as a nursery nurse, which I did for 12 years. That was a very different role to the one I play now, but both are equally rewarding.

Q What do you think makes you different? A I would say that one of the big things that makes the business different is the fact that it is something that is very personal and family run. My daughter has helped work out the front with myself and is now working in the kitchen with her dad. My son has also helped back of house from time to time and I’m hoping that, soon, he will be more involved in getting to know the ropes out in the front in the restaurant. The business is also something that is owned and run by ourselves so it can be run the way we like it and how it fits for us and our customers. We were at a stage in our life where we had the chance to turn the dream into a reality, which we did.

ADELE CARNERA

Adele Carnera BUS I N E S S : Director, The OPRA Group W E B S I TE : theopragroup.com

Q Before launching your business, what was your working background? A Before founding The OPRA Group, I worked for 20+ years in HR and Recruitment, predominantly within the Investment industry. During this time I achieved my CIPD and then Masters Degree in Human Resource Management, which helped me broaden the projects I was able to work on globally. I took redundancy after 14 years at my last company and after a few months as an HR & Apprenticeship Contractor started The OPRA Group. Q What inspired you to

launch your business? A I just love people and I’m very inquisitive! Helping individuals move forward, evolve and carve out the right career route is very rewarding and can be life-changing for our candidates. My long career within HR helped me learn what to prioritise and what not to do in terms of service provision and I wanted to create an HR & Recruitment partnership business that provides a service focussed on commitment, effort and quality – not focussed on the deal, but the relationship and the service.

QWhat do you think makes you different? A We are so much more than a recruitment

business. Our recruitment services have flexible modules, allowing clients to create their own bespoke service, and our portfolio also includes award-winning Wellbeing Services, Pre-employment and Re-vetting screening plus outsource HR packages that are again modular, simple and pay as you go. Our business is global with hubs in Essex, City of London, Glasgow and Bangkok. I have also been the Essex Chair of the Apprentice Ambassador Network for a number of years, working with businesses and apprentices in Essex as part of the national network to promote and advise on all things apprenticeships. This gives our business a unique insight into the opportunities offered via apprenticeships.

Q How was 2023 for you? A This was a very difficult time for business

across the UK, recruitment had its own specific challenges which we were also affected by. We did, however, win awards including; New Recruitment Agency of the Year, Best Health & Wellbeing Strategy, Best Client Support, Best Candidate Care and also maintained our people-centric accreditations Good Business Charter, Mindful Employer, continued our membership with the Trusted Business Community, Good Employer and Living Wage Employer, so there have been lots of positives too. We have remained committed to our

charity partnerships since our inception and continued to raise lots of money for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT), and held an EHAAT awareness day where our team and others were challenged to cycle 250 kms in a day to celebrate 25 years of Air Ambulance. We smashed the total! Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A My personal goals this year are around my own health and wellbeing after some challenges in the last few months. I’m taking advantage of what I’ve learned from some of the partnerships we have in the wellbeing space and I’m also taking up a new hobby with friends – golf! This I’m sure will be helped by our new business partnership with the luxury hotel, golf course and spa, The Grove, as we are now the Members primary People Solutions business so another energising opportunity to mix business and pleasure. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A During lockdown my partner and I bought a villa in the foothills of the Dolomites in northern Italy, which he lovingly calls our ‘Labour of Love’. We know the area well as my Dad originates from there so I’m looking forward to using our ‘holiday’ time there, renovating and developing, improving our Italian language and our local knowledge – particularly of the food and wine! “Dishes are created in a very thoughtful and sustainable way”

T

he Windmill Chatham Green is a charming family run and dog friendly restaurant and pub, surrounded by the beautiful Essex countryside, just outside of Chelmsford on the route to the city’s racecourse. Michelin Star chef Tom Clarke and his partner Nancy Witte officially opened the doors just over a year ago in October 2023. Ever since, guests have received a very warm welcome from Nancy and her front of house team to enjoy and discover Tom’s exceptional talent, creating different flavour combinations by using foraged and seasonal ingredients. “For years we’ve been keeping an eye open for the perfect location,” says Nancy

TOM AND NANCY

with the aforementioned warm welcome offered to Absolutely. “We came across this amazing place and instantly fell in love with it and the surroundings. With the style of our food and our passion for the job we wanted to make The Windmill a destination, an experience for everyone.” The location certainly had a special meaning for Tom. His uncle and grandparents ran The Bakery in the nearby village in Great Waltham selling freshly baked goods to the local community until closing in 1991. Both Tom and Nancy have worked at some of the best restaurants in England and France. Tom, born in Chelmsford, has started his career in some very well-known local restaurants, such as Le Talbooth in Dedham, before moving on to work at Ramond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saison in Oxford, Jean Andre Charial in France at Le Strato Hotel in Courchevel and the legendary L’Ousteau de Baumaniere. In 2015 he took over the head chef position at L’Ortolan in Reading, where he was awarded one Michelin star and three AA rosettes, which he retained for five years until leaving to open up his own restaurant. Nancy, born near Berlin, has worked at the famous Sacher Hotel in Vienna, before moving to the country to work at the private members club Mosimann in the centre of London, as well as the Michelin-starred restaurant L’Ortolan in Reading, where the couple met. The Windmill has the cosy feel of a county pub with rustic chic and original features. The menu is kept short as dishes change frequently with the seasons, and menu descriptions are deceptively short and don’t reveal the full complexity of cooking until the actual dish arrives. “The menus are seasonal, using local products where possible, and dishes are created in a very thoughtful and sustainable way, using the whole product in various ways, including foraged ingredients

from our doorstep,” explains Nancy. There is a tasting menu alongside the a la carte, offering a real insight into Tom’s cooking, which Nancy describes as “Modern English, influenced by flavours and cooking methods from around the world”. Offering up two suggestions showcasing the eclecticism found at The Windmill, Nancy says: “The dark chocolate cremeux served with a blackberry mousse and rose ice cream. Tom remembered his Dad’s love for Fry’s Turkish Delight bars, so he created a take on it. Then, there’s the truffle crusted stone bass with charred baby leeks, black garlic ketchup and a seaweed cream. At the moment we are also serving whipped chicken liver parfait with blood orange and Yorkshire rhubarb, which is an amazing product and cuts through the richness of the parfait.” Last year The Windmill was officially recommended in the Michelin Guide, suggesting that patient search for the right site has come up trumps – but the two won’t be resting on their laurels. “In 2024 we would like to improve on what we do,” Nancy says as we bid farewell, “hosting wine tasting events with our suppliers and inviting English winemakers and putting on cocktail masterclasses, too.” Cheers to that. thewindmillchathamgreen.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

investors that are following in the footsteps of the world’s wealthiest collectors – and at this event we discovered how. Kicking things off in style, we enjoyed a masterclass tutorial whereby London Barrelhouse’s experts guided us through top of the range Japanese and scotch whiskies, notably Yamazaki and Macallan, where we could taste and discover why they’re the world’s most iconic names and cornerstones of every whisky portfolio. We even opened and sampled the 1946 52-year-old Macallan select reserve, which was simply delightful! The tasting was led by James Woodhead, who has over 20 years of experience in the whisky and wine trade, and has had the privilege of travelling the world and working with many producers. James holds a deep-seated passion, knowledge, and love of all things wine and whisky, and at this exclusive event he showcased handpicked wines from regions that are evolving to be the next growth in this exciting asset class. The tastings were fun but informative:

a chance to try those wines and whiskies that maybe you would not normally try and challenge your thoughts on this exciting asset alternative that’s fast becoming the norm for investing delivering year on year double digit growth for the right expressions! To be named one of the best wine and whisky advisors in the world by Spears 500 is a testament to the hard work and expertise that exists within their network and full credit to procurement, warehouse and front of house. Recognition by Europe’s leading wealth management authority not only vindicates their philosophy, but has helped them to expand their locations with their international office in Singapore giving them direct presence in Asia, which not only opens up vastly more competitive opportunities but together, with London, helps support and strengthen the service they are able to deliver, establishing new and exciting alliances. I

Carly Glendinning meets Catie Miller, founder of the online class phenomenon, Barre Series

t's a frosty Friday morning when I head to one of Catie Miller's Barre Series classes. The changing rooms are buzzing with dancers limbering up for an audition in another studio – and the anticipation and excitement are palpable. Getting out and about for classes isn't always easy since I became a mum, and it feels like a nice switch up from working out in my living room. Catie does, in fact, have an amazing online platform – a glossy on-demand Barre workout library, that you can access anytime, anywhere. But I'm ready for her to put me through my paces in-person. With a background in dance, and certified in Barre, STOTT Pilates,

Pre + Postnatal Movement and Total Body Resistance (TRX), Catie started Barre Series as a reaction to the high-intensity interval training everywhere in the fitness industry. Redefining what a Barre class can feel like, her approach blends ballet, Pilates and cardio to help you sculpt your body without burning it out. Catie bounds out of the studio to greet me. She has such a warm and lovely energy, and she invites me to choose some light hand weights and a mat. The class feels cosy, and it's not long before we're all flowing together – pliéing, relevéing, and sautéing. I find it easy to follow along, and Catie helps me with my form as the

class progresses. Cardio, abs, and core-work focus on small, but effective movements and I definitely feel the burn. What I really love about the class though is how welcoming everybody is. Chatting after class, Catie tells me: "At Barre Series, we take pride not only in our dynamically curated classes, but also in fostering an engaging community of like-minded members who contribute to the resilience and shared success of every individual on their wellness path." And it's this that makes me want to come back to one of Catie's classes soon. In person classes £30 per session, see more at barreseries.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

ith miles of rolling countryside and an array of greenery coming back to life, Essex’s gardens are the ideal place to see blooming flowers and budding plants. Visit Essex, the county’s tourism body, gives the lowdown on the top ten gardens of Essex to visit this spring.

RHS Garden Hyde Hall, Chelmsford

Set in the heart of rural Essex, these beautiful gardens provide a panoramic view of stunning plants and greenery. From March to May, you can catch the rhododendron flowers bloom in a range of colours from pale pink to bright red. You can also spot flowering camellias and magnolias. Guided tours take place throughout the year. Tickets start at £15.85 for adults and £7.95 for children.

Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Walden

The majestic Audley End House sits in a beautiful expanse of gardens, with a range of idyllic parkland, designed by the noted landscape architect, Capability Brown, to explore. Admire the palettes of colour here, as 16,000 bedding plants and 19,000 bulbs begin blooming. Fresh, yellow daffodils open up in springtime, followed by vibrant colours in the Parterre and Pond Gardens. Fruit trees will also start to blossom in the walled Organic Kitchen Garden, including over 120 varieties of apples, 40 types of pears and 60 kinds of tomatoes. Online advance tickets benefit from a 10% discount compared to buying

on-site, starting at £18.10 for adults, £11.30 for children, and £16.30 for concessions.

Beth Chatto’s Plants and Gardens, Colchester

With 7.5 acres of garden, Beth Chatto’s Plants and Gardens prides itself on ecological planting: putting the right plants in the right place. Founder and award-winning gardener Beth Chatto transformed an overgrown wasteland into gardens with five distinct areas. The Woodland Garden is a must visit in the springtime, with its variety of shade-loving bulbs, perennials and shrubs. Drought-tolerant plants thrive in the Gravel Garden despite never being watered and being planted in one of the driest parts of the country. There’s also the Reservoir, Scree and Water Gardens to explore, each with their own flora. Tickets are cheaper when purchased online; entry prices are £12.50 for adults, £3.50 for children and £6.50 for students.

The Gibberd Garden, Harlow

Hailed by BBC Gardeners’ World as “one of the most important post-war gardens in the country”, The Gibberd Garden is a Grade II listed garden, designed by Sir Frederick and Lady Pat Gibberd. You can explore a range of formal terraces, lawns, pools and avenues, or marvel at the collection of modern sculpture and architectural pieces acquired by the founders over their lifetime. Sir Frederick built an impressive moated castle for his grandchildren to play in, which, along with animal sculptures and acres of green space, can now be enjoyed by all children. The garden will be fully open to the public from April.

RHS GARDEN HYDE HALL

Beeleigh Abbey Gardens, Maldon

Three acres of beautiful gardens sit on the grounds of the historic Beeleigh Abbey. March brings with it blooming primroses, daffodils and tulips, providing a riot of colour within the gardens. Tickets are £6 for adults and £2.50 for children.

Bridge End Garden, Saffron Walden

HYLANDS ESTATE (THE PLEASURE GARDENS) – PHOTO COURTESY OF CHELMSFORD CITY COUNCIL / AARRON CROW

The Gardens of Easton Lodge, Dunmow

Dating back over 400 years, these historic gardens were most famously owned by the Countess of Warwick, mistress of Edward VII. In 1902, the countess commissioned leading designer, Harold Peto, to create stunning formal gardens. An ambitious restoration programme started in 1993, to return the gardens to their former glory after abandonment in the 1950s, and today there are 23 acres of beautiful gardens to enjoy. Open Thursdays are £5 from April, while monthly Open Sundays are £5.50 booked in advance and £6.50 on the gate.

Copped Hall Gardens, Epping

The majestic Copped Hall has ancient roots. Many important buildings, from the Medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan eras, were demolished before the present mansion was built by the Victorians. Its 25 acres of gardens are to the north of Epping Forest and bordered by agricultural fields. They are considered a special place where wild creatures can move between various habitats. Animal enthusiasts can spot a variety of spring insects, birds and pond creatures within the four-acre walled garden. Just outside the walled garden a blanket of spring flowers can be found. Tickets are £10.

58

This popular garden was created around 1840 by Francis Gibson, a local Quaker businessman. Although open to the public since 1918, the garden fell into neglect, so a restoration project went underway between 2003 and 2008. Now reinstated to its former glory, the garden is Grade II listed and is the perfect place to go for a peaceful spring escape. The garden is free and open to the public all year (except Christmas Day).

Promenade Park, Maldon

This 100-year-old Edwardian park contains an ornamental lake, magnificent river views over the River Blackwater, plus a variety of things to do for the whole family. Opened in 1895, the park initially consisted of 14 acres of ground and maintains its historic charm while developing for the modern age. Now expanded to 58 acres, families can head to Promenade Park to enjoy the splash park, have a picnic by the lake, or a simple stroll. The park is free to enter, although parking charges apply.

Hylands Park, Chelmsford

With 574 acres of restored historic parkland, it’s no wonder that the historic Hylands Park is such a popular location. Formal Victorian gardens and ancient woodlands are located on the grounds and have plenty of spring fauna and flora to discover. The Pleasure Gardens date back to the early 1900s. Admission is free but parking charges apply. Find out more at visitessex.com

They create an ideal environment for relaxation: a feeling of home, a sense of calm and serenity. BoConcept’s Bolzano collection stands out thanks to its curved front panel that gives a 360 degree curve all the way around the seat. Additionally, there is now an option to invest in the modern accent chair, available with swivel functionality, seamlessly blending soft organic shapes with minimalist lines. arpe Diem Beds is the designer brand that creates unique and well-designed bedroom environments you never want to leave. And to enhance your bedroom's b e a u t y, t h e c l a s s i c houndstooth pattern associated with Christian Dior and Jackie Kennedy, is part of a limited Design Edition that fuses French luxury with Carpe Diem Beds’ Swedish heritage for a perfect blend of chic aesthetics and top-modern Swedish craftsmanship. Carpe Diem Beds has been developing beds for over 25 years with the goal of creating a feeling of near weightlessness and amazing comfort. The founder, Börje Thuleskär, used knowledge from his chiropractor profession and collaborated with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg to lay the foundation for the first models and Carpe Diem Beds' patented Contour Pocket System. Carpe Diem Beds is much more than a bed, it is a lifestyle brand that puts focus on the entire design experience. The beds are designed to be as beautiful to look at as they are comfortable. A complete design experience for the bedroom that allows you to create an individual retreat in which you can relax completely. Now the French world of fashion is united with the beautiful and natural Swedish aura that Carpe Diem Beds represents. The Design Edition is inspired by Carpe Diem Beds' Swedish heritage and the graphic tones characterising the nature around the country’s west coast, and the exclusive feeling reinforced by the classic houndstooth patterned textile with strong roots in French fashion houses like

Christian Dior. An elegant and timeless classic that never goes out of style – the perfect match with Carpe Diem Beds' soul and range. “With this Design Edition in the classic houndstooth pattern, we combine qualities from the world of fashion with high recognition that exudes the same timeless and at the same time eternally modern design, with our vision of a bedroom so appealing, timeless, and elegant that you never want to leave it,” says Rui France, Store Manager at the Marylebone Flagship store. The Swedish sleep experts have devised a whole philosophy centered around the bedroom environment, based on the principle that the whole space should be designed as a holistic concept dedicated to the art of sleep. This philosophy comes to life at their Wigmore Street showroom, where they offer a Sleep Consultation to help you create a personalised sleep environment. This involves much more than just choosing a mattress. The store is dedicated to optimising the bedroom environment to create an oasis of calm, and visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand under the guidance of manger Rui Franca. And while choosing the perfect mattress for you is at the heart of the experience, there’s a strong focus on bedroom design and streamlining, so that the bed you choose can be enclosed in an environment that’s conducive to optimum sleep health. In addition to the design edition of the Sandö continental bed, the classic French pattern also adorns a dog bed, throw pillows, and footstool/pouffe, too. Everything designed to offer you the complete bedroom experience. carpediembeds.co.uk has concessions in Harrods and Heals, plus a shop at 15 Wigmore Street, W1

ARTFULLY WALLS

Off the WALL It can take a lifetime to amass a collection of artworks, but what to do if you’re in a hurry? Go online, of course By PENDLE HARTE

G

allery walls have been a major trend for several years now. But of course hanging pictures on your walls was a thing long before anyone came up with the idea of a gallery wall. And while some people naturally acquire things they like and frame them, others don’t know where to start. Realistically, it can take a lifetime to amass a collection of artworks and who has time for that? Art lover and tech visionary Cathy Glazer came up with a solution. Her online gallery Artfully Walls is dedicated to providing something for everyone, with all tastes catered for with the same approach to high quality printing and framing. It’s a carefully curated yet vast and diverse archive of artworks of all kinds, where everything can be bought in a variety of sizes, with several framing options, and each piece is printed

to order as a museum quality fine art print with archival inks on premium paper and canvas. It’s a seemingly infinite resource, and its genius lies not only in Cathy’s professional eye for quality, but in the technology that organises an enormous body of work into a searchable library. When faced with thousands of potential pictures, even the most decisive person is likely to feel exhausted. And where to begin? Searching by artist is an obvious starting point, but only for someone who knows artists that they like. Maybe medium? So you might search photography, say, or watercolour, or collage, or illustration. This is where Artfully Walls comes into its own. You might search something more abstract, such as, say ‘abstract’ or ‘landscape’ or ‘portrait’. You might like cats and search that, or seascapes, or architectural drawings, or botanical images. You might want something that’s mostly red to go with your

sofa. You might want something traditional, or something experimental. Each image is so precisely tagged and categorised that searches are impressively accurate. Alternatively, the archive includes a large series of designer picks, where people from all over the world with an eye for design offer up their own gallery walls for inspiration. Most of us don’t have tastes that are entirely consistent, and these walls show how pieces can work together even if they wouldn’t be classified together by any algorithm. All of this data creates an excellent resource for analysing trends too. Current demand shows a diversity of popular choices, with lots of searches for Greek and Roman motifs, as well as 18th century oil paintings. Linocuts are in vogue, as are portraits. You heard it here first. artfullywalls.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Master of all you SURVEY

Top tips to create the perfect master bedroom in your loft

A

master bedroom remains the most popular loft conversion choice and in 2024 Econoloft expect to see more people than ever developing luxurious adult retreats at the top of the house.

INCLUDE A BATHROOM Having an additional bathroom will add more value to your home should you ever wish to sell – while providing you with a separate room you don’t have to share with the children. Your bathroom could be large enough for a bath and shower, or quite compact for just the essentials – either way, it’s all yours!

LIGHTING Econoloft always advise building in as much natural light as possible and Juliet balconies

remain popular, especially if you have a view to admire from the top of the house. When the sun goes down and you want to change the mood, think carefully about where to install your lighting. It’s important to get advice from Econoloft experts at the design stage – as it could be expensive to change later.

THE BED The bed is probably going to take up most of the space in the room. A typical build provides a sloping ceiling which in many ways epitomizes loft living. However, think carefully about where you place a bed – banging your head every morning won’t be fun. Instead, use the nooks and crannies created by your Econoloft loft conversion as a design feature and show off your favourite pieces.

FITTED FURNITURE If you want to make the most of the loft con-

version features, consider having bespoke furniture that perfectly aligns with the build. It can be more expensive, but it will make full use of the space available and looks amazing.

DRESSING YOUR ROOM Arguably the best bit of the project. What mood do you want to create in your new luxury space? Perhaps you want to recreate a 5* hotel vibe, maybe you are looking for a minimal look with white walls and clean lines, or possibly a warm and welcoming cosy retreat? Whatever your style, Econoloft offers a one-stop loft conversion shop that can help and guide you – from plans to plaster, peace of mind is guaranteed. econoloft.co.uk / 0800 269 765 sales@econoloft.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

schgl is a ski resort village in western Austria’s Paznaun Valley, easy to get to from Innsbruck and just a two-hour flight from London. Grey frosted forests and the Alps loom alongside the autobahn as the cab drives (1h 20m) to Ischgl. White snow crunches underfoot, covering like a blanket of peace as we drop off bags at the Hotel Post, and head to Bründl opposite to hire ski kit and Sport Adler for a snowboard. From the room’s balcony, I see pine trees as white snow falls against black sky across the picture-postcard town. Dinner is several courses of fine dining – expect pansies and beetroot and foam with exceptional wines. It’s cold outside (-7°C), but it’s warm in bed – we don’t need the fleece blankets in this toasty hotel, it’s almost too warm with super comfy pillows and bedding. A varied breakfast buffet sets you up for the day, looking out at blue skies, snow topped lampposts and drifts of crisp white snow. The hotel has lockers in the basement

with heated boot holders. Walking like an inelegant stormtrooper to the nearby Dorftunnel travelators, then gliding up in the Fimbar glass gondola to the various slopes. I head straight to SkiSchule for a refresher ski lesson. A quiet click as boots lock into bindings, skis creak in the snow and then we’re off. Up on the button lift to practise techniques and follow the instructor. Snowploughs, zig-zags and then I confidently slide straight... to enjoy a drink at the Idalp Ice bar. Sat on a bench outside, music plays as I admire the impressive mountain view. Inside the wooden panelled restaurant enjoy satiating spag bol, sausage and chips, and a balcony overlooking blinding white snow. The skiing is awesome in Austria and from Ishcgl you can even ski into Switzerland or the duty-free town of Samnanun. With fantastic snow, brilliantly linked runs and bronze, silver and gold circuits for all abilities and levels, it’s great for beginners with lots of blue runs. The resort has snow cannons, wellmaintained pistes, restaurants, tool kits, free

phone chargers, lockers, snow fun parks, and efficient lifts – one chair lift has heated seats! Proficient skiers can ski through powder snow to the valley almost to their hotel door, but I take the peaceful gondola down. Gentle shushing of the skiers below, light fading, snow falling – it’s like being in a black-and-white movie. Tonight’s dinner is livened up by some devilish creatures roaming the streets outside. I excitedly rush out to witness the spectacle. Hairy locals dressed as Krampus – with horns, masks, iron chains and loud bells on noisy tractors – are an entertainingly scary sight. In early December, they scare naughty children – and adults! The monsters accompany Saint Nicholas as he arrives at the Christmas market in the heart of town (it’s like a cross between Mad Max and Where the Wild Things Are). The hotel offers schedule suggestions including skiing to the smugglers’ Samnaun duty-free town, Silvretta High Alpine Road and the new wellness spa Silvretta Therme. Activities include tobogganing, ice skating, curling and cross-country skiing, rent a MoonBike (an e-snowbike), or hike through the snow-covered landscape. ‘Relax... if you can’ is their mantra/ motto, so after an uplifting morning on the slopes, I slope off to the spa. The Postillion spa has a sauna, steam bath, indoor and outdoor pool, massages and beauty treatments. A lovely swim in the heated outdoor pool at 32°C, with a view of snowy mountains and misty water, then relax, inhaling lemongrass in the steam room. That evening we walk through the picturesque town dripping with glassy icicles to check out Silvretta Therme. We head back to live music at Bar 67 lit by fragrant cinnamon candles at Hotel Post Ischgl, where Alpine comforts are inspired by tradition. On the last day, after a morning snow ploughing in the fresh air, I ski straight to the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

It has ten award-winning restaurants with gastronomy chefs and innovative cuisine, and top-quality hospitality from 4 and 5-star hotels to family-friendly apartments. It is one of the largest connected cross-border ski areas in the Alps with guaranteed snow and a climate-neutral certificate. Some 90% of the Silvretta Arena is more than 2,000 metres above sea level, which means snow until May. The Paznaun area (Ischgl, Galtür, Kappl and See) is a valley for adventure seekers and adrenaline junkies, as well as nature lovers and families. Ischgl has 239 km of perfectly groomed pistes, 45 mountain lifts, 1,100 snow guns, 515 hectares of piste – a ski resort for active skiers and more casual winter sports enthusiasts. There are excellent mountain restaurants and nightlife for those who like to après-ski – it’s the only ski resort with a Pacha nightclub. It’s a long season from November to May with music events including a Top of the Mountain Closing Concert to celebrate the end of the ski season with a bang. Sounds in the Tyrolean Alps include Black Eyed Peas at the end of April 2024. In the summer, it’s great for mountain bike trails, trekking and hiking, too. Exciting events, activities and partnerships will encourage more children to enjoy reading, however they choose to, this World Book Day

T

he charity World Book Day is holding its annual celebration on Thursday 7 March right across the UK and Ireland. World Book Day 2024 will celebrate that children are more likely to enjoy reading when their choices are championed and we make reading fun. Reading for pleasure improves children’s life chances across a range of social, educational and well-being measures. However, research from the National Literacy Trust found that fewer than 1 in 2 (47.8%) children now say they enjoy reading; this is the lowest level since 2005, and reading enjoyment is lowest among children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Read Your Way calls on everyone to let go of pressure and expectations, giving children a choice – and a chance – to enjoy reading. Young voices are at the heart of the campaign, with World Book Day’s selection of £1 books chosen with the help of children, while children’s everyday reading lives are brought to life through the dynamic imagery of World Book Day illustrator Vivian Truong.

84

Also, 2024 will see the launch and evolution of a number of new exciting partnerships, including new ways to fundraise, to ensure more children and families can experience and benefit from the joy of reading. Cassie Chadderton, CEO of World Book Day, says: “Our aim for World Book Day 2024 is to bring the fun of reading to more children, to celebrate their choices and encourage everyone to Read Their Way. Fewer children and their families are enjoying reading, just when the life-changing benefits are needed most.” She continues: “The World Book Day £1 authors and illustrators will be out and about at bookshops, libraries and schools across the country encouraging children to read for pleasure and we’re excited that a fantastic array of partners and supporters are making it easier than ever to get involved with activities, fundraising or simply choosing a £1 book for free with our tokens.”

WORLD BOOK DAY EVENTS Funded by Julia and Hans Rausing, World Book Day is working with 20 libraries in highdeprived areas with low literacy levels to help create a legacy around reading for pleasure. Libraries in areas where there is limited

access to retailers/bookshops will welcome local children to swap their £1 book tokens for books, followed by an exciting event in spring, to inspire local families to continue enjoying reading together long after the day itself. In 2024, a massive 105,000 books are being distributed through a range of supporters and partners, including working with BookTrust’s network of 6,000 local organisations to get the £1 book tokens into some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities. Alongside events, 24,000 books will be distributed through prisons to help families read together, while 43,750 books will be shared across 17 National Literacy Hubs and over 100 football clubs to support book ownership in areas of high deprivation and low literacy.

BOOKSHOP TOUR Every single World Book Day £1 author (and some illustrators) will be at their local bookshop sometime between 15 February and 8 March. Over 400 independent bookshops and retailers across the UK and Ireland including The Works, WHSmith, Waterstones, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda will be welcoming children, families, schools, and local communities to have fun

FUNDRAISING PARTNERSHIPS Contemporary jeweller Tatty Devine has created a 16-piece jewellery collection, inspired by some of its favourite books, authors, and genres. Launched on 25 January, 10% from each piece sold will be donated to World Book Day. Vintage-style fashion brand Joanie have created two collaboration pieces for the charity, donating £5 from each sale of its TOBY sweatshirt and £10 from each sale of its TALLY dress from its collection to World Book Day this year. Amscan International Ltd will launch a new collection of World Book Day-themed

costumes from classic fairytales, with 5% from every sale going to support the charity’s work. Sales of a new World Book Day celebration pack from Party Delights will also give a 5% donation to the charity. Children in schools across the country will also be able to enjoy a book-themed menu and activity sheet, thanks to school catering provider Green Gourmet. Jigsaw Education Group are producing free resources based on their Jigsaw Outdoors programme (as part of their bigger Jigsaw PSHE programme) which are World Book Day themed, encouraging active engagement with reading outdoors, at both school and home. “It was to foster a place where all are valued, loved and respected”

Fishing for

NEWS Exploring why New Hall School were celebrating a very special commemorative event last month

O

n Saturday 3 February, New Hall School in Chelmsford celebrated Mass to mark the exact anniversary of the first Mass celebrated at New Hall following the arrival of the founding Religious Community, the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre, in 1799. The Canonesses’ journey had been one of excitement, radical education, and secrecy. At a time when girls were denied a Catholic education in England, they were sent to Liège to board with the Religious Community, founded in 1642. However, the French Revolutionary wars forced them back to England, where they moved into the Tudor Palace of Beaulieu, intent on moving their school and providing a Catholic education to girls from around Europe and the UK.

“It was not a simple task, as students now had to be smuggled into the country. The sisters used the code name ‘fishes’ to cover up the real contents of the boats arriving on the English shores. This secret led to students across the decades being referred to as ‘Fishes’, with alumni becoming ‘Old Fishes’ as they left the School,” explains Andrew Fardell, Deputy Principal of New Hall School. In honour of this distinguished history, at the 225th Anniversary Mass, it was announced that the school will be returning to this tradition, renaming its alumni association the Old Fishes Association. “The 225th Anniversary Mass was a historic and emotional event for the Community. Returning to New Hall for such an occasion gave us all a reason to reflect with gratitude on the past and to remember with awe the courageous and intrepid faith of our forebears,” says Sister Moira, the Prioress of the

Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre. Students, staff, members of the Religious Community, Old Fishes, and friends gathered to celebrate and sing praise. “Let us build a house where love can dwell, and all can safely live – the words of the opening hymn could be taken as the inspiration of those sisters who first set foot into New Hall to begin a new era for community and school life in 1799. It certainly reflects the values that inspired community leadership of the school over many generations – to foster a place where all are valued, loved, and respected, a place where Gospel values are paramount,” Sister Moira adds. For 225 years, New Hall has provided a much-appreciated service to the local community, as it offered the opportunities of celebrating the Sacraments of Baptism, first Holy Communion, Confirmation, funerals and, more recently, weddings. In 2021, Fr Michael Barwick celebrated his first Mass as an ordained priest at New Hall, with many local residents, students, and staff members in attendance. Working it out The Green at Epping Gate: a commuter’s dream amid the great return-to-office

F

airview New Homes is launching the second phase of its Epping Gate development, “The Green at Epping Gate”, located in charming Loughton; the perfect solution for many city workers as full-time remote working fades into the past. The surge of remote working in 2020 inspired many to put down new roots in search of better value for money and quality of life away from cities, but with businesses now demanding workers return to the office, at least in part, many will now be searching for the perfect outer city hybrid. Encompassing a range of spacious and modern one-, two- and threebedroom apartments, two- and threebedroom duplexes and two- and threebedroom houses, The Green at Epping

Gate is the perfect place for young professionals and families to call home. With one-bedroom apartments at Epping Gate starting at just £345,000, the development presents a cheaper option to the average flat in similar green belt commuter locations within 35 minutes of Liverpool Street or Bond Street, such as Chigwell where an apartment costs 5.6% more (£364,406), North Acton 32.7% more (£457,878) and Ealing a staggering 36.6% more (£471,141). The Green is the second phase of Fairview’s Epping Gate development. Firsttime buyers and London workers Jenny and Emily bought at the first phase in spring last year and were drawn to the perfect work life balance the development offers. Jenny says: “We have lots of dog walking routes and have met lots of lovely people during our walks. We’ve also joined the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

local gym and frequent Epping Forest with our little dog Coco. We have an abundance of great local restaurants and coffee shops which we regularly visit. “We knew we liked the location of Loughton with its close proximity to Epping Forest, as well as it being an easy commute to London via the Central Line and close to the motorway,” she adds. “Not only this, but the local area itself offers a fantastic high street that’s right on our doorstep – so when we found this property, we were immediately drawn to it.”

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

The Green at Epping Gate is nestled within the desirable ‘Golden Triangle’ of bustling Loughton, aspirational Buckhurst Hill and glamourous Chigwell, so residents will benefit from having an array of independent shops, luxury boutiques and trendy restaurants to choose from. The attractive development offers

94

residents the best of both worlds. Located in leafy Zone 6, Debden Station is a sevenminute walk away, meaning residents can travel into central London via the Central Line, which connects commuters to Stratford in 22 minutes, Bank in 32, Liverpool Street in 33, and Oxford Circus in 42. Epping Forest is less than 10-minutes’ drive away, offering residents an abundance of tranquil green space; with 5,900 acres of woodland, heaths and ponds, weekends with family, friends and dogs will be well-spent there. Its closest high street, Loughton, is a 5-minute drive away – a great spot for a take-away coffee en-route to work or on the school run. As well as independent restaurants and cafés for leisurely brunches with friends, and meals out with the family, including Molens Café & Brasserie, Zest Salad Bar, and Aura Grill and Bar, there are some popular chains too – Zizzi, Nando’s and GAIL’s bakery, to name a few.

The Green at Epping Gate is a great location for young families. Not only does the development boast safe and secure residents’ podium gardens and play areas for children to enjoy, Loughton and the surrounding area has several sought-after schools. These include ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rated schools and nurseries – Beechoak Farm Montessori Preschool, a 12-minute drive away, and Hereward Primary School, a 5-minute drive. For teens, Debden Park High School is a short 4-minute drive from the development. For those 16 and over, the modern New City College offers a range of BTEC and vocational courses and is just a stone’s throw from The Green. With the M11 Junction 5 4-minutes’ drive away, access to the M25 Junction 26 in 14 minutes means the development is conveniently located for residents either wanting to travel to London by car or to the neighbouring Essex and Hertfordshire towns. THE GOOD

LIFE Could cohabitation reform be on the way? Attwater’s Belinda Strange takes a closer look

T

hese days, marriage is a choice rather than an imperative. And yet, English law has not kept up with the new status quo. Despite living together, sometimes for many years or even decades, cohabiting couples have very few legal rights or responsibilities towards one another. And this can leave them financially vulnerable in the case of separation or death. For example, if you are not married to your partner and they died unexpectedly, you wouldn’t be entitled to inherit any of their money or possessions unless they have specifically named you as a beneficiary in their Will. Nor would you necessarily be entitled to a share in the property you live in together upon separation.

COULD CHANGE BE ON THE WAY? At Labour’s most recent Party Conference, which took place in October 2023, Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry introduced proposals to reform cohabitation

laws, in order to offer “proper” protection to millions of couples and families. Ms Thornberry’s proposals included: • Increased rights to access financial support in the event of a relationship breakdown – especially where there is no joint property or shared parental responsibility; • Rights to a share in the family home, like married couples on divorce; • Other changes modelled on the legal situation in New Zealand, Scotland and Ireland, where such reforms have already taken place.

PROTECTING YOURSELF The Head of the Family Law team at Attwaters Jameson Hill, Belinda Strange, warns couples not to sit on their laurels in the hope of rapid legal reform. “These proposals by the Labour Party are an encouraging sign that we might see some improvement in the legal BELINDA STRANGE status of cohabiting couples

at some point in the not-too-distant future,” she says. “However, legislative change is a slow process and, of course, it all depends on the result of this year’s general election.” In the meantime, Belinda strongly advises that cohabiting couples make a Cohabitation Agreement (otherwise known as a ‘Living Together’ Agreement), a legally binding document which outlines the parties’ various financial rights and responsibilities towards each other in the event of separation. She also recommends that unmarried couples have an up-to-date, valid Will that expressly states each party’s intention to leave property, money and other assets to the surviving partner if one of them were to die. Nobody wants to think about these kinds of unpleasant eventualities – but protecting yourself now could save you a great deal of stress and hardship if the worst were to happen. attwatersjamesonhill.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

why everyone is talking about…

Audley End

MINIATURE RAILWAY The build up to a very special anniversary starts here

T

his year sees a very special celebration of 60 years of creating family memories aboard the Audley End Miniature Railway. Over Father’s Day weekend in June, the railway will welcome visitors to commemorate the occasion with the launch of a brand-new electric locomotive, and with dads going free it will be a double celebration. Lord Braybrooke, who had a lifelong passion for steam trains, opened the railway in 1964 for the public with the help of racing legend Sir Stirling Moss. His passion for steam led to the development of a miniature railway, which he opened to the public to provide entertainment for visitors to Audley End House next door, which is now run by English Heritage. The site, now one of the most popular days out for families in Essex, has grown in its ancient woodland setting. It offers seasonal events, which includes a Fairy and Elf walk, nature corner, stage shows and a bespoke playground for little ones to let off steam. The site plans to launch a brand new fully electric locomotive – yet to be named – which will join the current fleet of hardworking 10.25" gauge locomotives and will continue to take families around the magical Audley End woods. Owner Amanda Murray, who has run the attraction for the last eight years and eldest daughter of Lord Braybrooke, says: “Our 60th anniversary is the perfect time to launch our new electric train,

98

which is a cleaner, greener and more reliable edition to our engine shed. As we celebrate this enormous milestone the railway will connect our heritage with the future of our attraction. Our anniversary celebration across Father’s Day will welcome dads to come for free and families to enjoy a traditional British day out.” At the railway they offer an exciting experience for children with fun, entertainment and a magical environment to explore. They aim to be somewhere families love to come to make memories and develop a sense of adventure. After 60 years, it’s time to continue to make the railway part of your family tradition. audley-end-railway.co.uk
