Jun 15th 2012 Luzern CH

By far the most challenging experimental workshop in this booklet. Based on the Crosslander prototype (right) Yuri developed an impro workshop, where the participants are free to make their own unique instrument. Abstract art is not as useless as it might appear at first sight. The works of the Suprematism painter Kasimir Malevich coincidentally have a direct relevance for complex configurations of crossed strings to achieve a series of sounds not easy to create in any other way. In the spirit of Malevich’ paintings the particants design a composition of strings on a big wooden plate. Besides the visual appealing result of the compositions, the sets of crossed strings cause a wide diversity of complex sounds. In timbre remniscent of church bells, Chineze gongs and Indonesian gamelan instruments. On top of the string fields objects such as metal plates and springs can be added to create, even more radical, alternate sounds. After finishing the instrument, the good sounding spots are marked with colored dots and signs and a legend is added how to play the instruments.
