PACIFIC CHRISTIAN SCHOOL CHRIST-LIKE LIVING, CRITICAL THINKING, AND JOYFUL SERVICE

I

t is a joy and a privilege to work at PCS Elementary. I love the God-centered atmosphere and the camaraderie among the staff, but what makes it really wonderful is spending time nurturing and preparing our students to reach the potential that God has planned for each one of them.

Three years ago I was contentedly teaching Grade 2 for my 8th year at PCS, perfectly happy and thinking that I had the best job ever, just as I had when I taught Kindergarten at Kootenay Christian Academy in Cranbrook for the 4 years before that. However, sometimes God has plans that require us to step outside our comfort zone and grow in ways that we hadn’t anticipated. One spring day, Mr. Helmus came into my class and said he had something to talk to me about. Now, Mr. Helmus is a wonderful principal and is always welcome in our classes, but it was spring, and I knew the administration was working on teacher placements for “...I feel so blessed the following year, so my heart began beating just a little faster ( I knew they needed to have had the teachers at the upper elementary grades). I had briefly contemplated the possibility of privilege of working moving to another grade, maybe as high as Grade 6, which I had taught before, but definitely no higher; moving grades is a lot of work! So Mr. Helmus began, “Have you with students in a thought of changing grades? Maybe one of the intermediate levels? I was thinking you variety of grades...” would be good in Grade 7.” Gulp! Grade 7 – There would be so much to learn. How would l relate to the students? They seem so much older. There would be different problems, maybe even boy-girl issues! After teaching Kindergarten, I could tell you all the wonderful reasons that Kindergarten is the best age to teach: kids eager to come to school, minds like sponges, keenly absorbing all the new knowledge they are presented with, learning through play and, the very best reward, when they realize they can read! All those sounds they have been learning make words and words make stories – it is a very exciting discovery, and I loved being a part of it. After joining the PCS staff in 2002, I realized that Grade 2 was also a wonderful grade to teach. The students were learning to work independently, motivated to do their best; they were curious, always asking questions and wondering about how things work in the world they were discovering. They were eager continued over...

continued... to please, enjoyed being at school, and it was easy to have a good rapport with them. The last three years of teaching Grade 2 were particularly special years as we moved Grades 1 and 2 to the primary campus. Ask anyone involved in working or going to school there; it was a unique experience and we loved our little campus and the special relationships we developed during those years. But, after three years, we were preparing to return to the main campus when Mr. Helmus came for that spring visit.

Victoria Christian Education Society (VCES) Annual General Meeting Wednesday, May 29 at 7:00 pm in the elementary gym. This is an opportunity for parents to engage in person with the Board about PCS. This meeting will also look at our school’s successes and challenges and the work going on to develop a fresh strategic plan ‘making dreams a reality’. In addition, it is a great time to meet with other parents.

Look, Listen, and Learn... Grade 7 – Wow! After praying and feeling that about where we are at and our exciting future at PCS! God wanted me in Grade 7, I made the leap. New See, Speak, and Socialize... curriculum, new staff members to work with, with Board members, parents, and staff--it’s for EVERYONE! opposite end of the school, new subjects, new responsibilities, adult-sized desks and chairs, and AGM public speaking is not your thing? Write your thoughts down did I mention, totally new curriculum? But I was while they are fresh and place them in the baskets as you leave. Then excited (and nervous) for this new experience. It watch for your question in the next Talk-Board or on the PCS Blog. has been a challenging and rewarding three years and now I can tell you why I love teaching Grade 7 students.

Grade 7 students have an enthusiasm for life (social–always, academic – sometimes). I am energized by the buzz on the balcony each morning, as they joyfully greet each other and share their latest discoveries on social media or video games. They love being the “big kids” in the school (enjoy it while it lasts, boys and girls!), clubs, the balcony, studying Egypt, and the anticipation of SALTS, and the year end Recognition Ceremony. We have thoughtful discussions about life and preparing for the future God has planned for them, about finding their place in the world, about raising the bar, and about developing internal motivation. The students are keen to demonstrate they can handle greater freedoms as they experiment by dipping their toes in the ocean of greater responsibility. It is rewarding being there for students that are struggling with challenges in their lives, helping them to develop skills to solve problems effectively and to see situations through a Biblical perspective. I love to see growth and development as students take responsibility for their own learning, and to assist them when they take the initiative to ask for help as they face academic challenges. With secondary school looming ever nearer throughout the year, there is a growing anticipation of changing expectations and a desire to rise to the challenges of personal accountability. But wait, we are only in April … Let’s not race into the future too quickly. There are still a couple months of Grade 7, the greatly anticipated SALTS trip, and the Grade 7 celebration evening to enjoy before I am ready to see the students take the “long” walk across the parking lot.

Pacific Christian Secondary Presents

I hope you can see why I feel so blessed to have had the privilege of working with students in a variety of grades, and even had the joy of teaching some students in both Grades 2 and 7. Which is my favourite grade to teach? I can’t answer that question; each grade has its ups and downs, its challenges and rewards but I have appreciated the uniqueness of each grade as I have spent time with the students and right now, I am loving working and interacting with the Grade 7s.

Dear PCS Community On behalf of the Board and Strategic Planning Team, I want to thank you for the time and thoughtful responses you gave to us through our recent survey. It is important that we hear your input and consider it as we plan for the next 3-5 years. Your responses will help to shape all aspects of schooling, from programs and policies to developing a master plan that will guide decision-making. The information we have received from staff and parents, coupled with input from the student body, will be given to the Planning Team who will collate the responses and share this with the Board and school community in the weeks ahead. These are exciting times as we move forward and plan how PCS, its programs, people and projects will continue to enhance and promote Christian Education and further equip our students to live lives of faithful obedience as image-bearers of God. Up-Date on our Elementary Principal In early March, Mr. Helmus had the opportunity to travel to Zambia and open the new pre-school. His adventures are well documented on his blog site: www.anneslegacy.tumblr.com. We encourage you to spend some time reading about the new students and new hope that is presented as a result of great community effort in Zambia with support for this region of Canada. Shortly after returning from the trip, Mr. Helmus underwent some surgery. We recently received this email update from him: “I just got a call from my surgeon this morning, and he said my cancer is fully contained and I won’t require any follow-up treatment! The cancer wasn’t evident in the lymph nodes, nor had it reached the margin or gone beyond the capsule of the prostate. So, praise God, it was 100% removed! This is a wonderful answer to all our prayers. Special thanks to everyone for your prayers, your visits, phone calls, emails, cards, food and other expressions of support. I appreciate it very much!”

Registration for September 2013 We are still accepting registrations for all grade levels (Pre-School, Kindergarten, and Grades 1 through Grade 12). There are still openings at most grade levels, but only very limited spaces remain available for some grades. If you are interested in registering your children for the 2013-2014 school year, or know someone who is, you are encouraged to submit your registration forms as soon as Re-Registration for possible. All registration forms are available on the PCS website. Existing Families In September, 2013, we will be offering two full-time kindergarten programs, although we will still provide a part-time option to parents who prefer this for their child. Part-time children will be attend a full-time kindergarten class on a part-time basis. Call the school office if you have questions about this option. Our Pre-School Program for 3 & 4-year-olds offers various scheduling options. We are offering Pre-School for two, three or five half-days per week with times available every morning, plus Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Call for an appointment if you have any questions or would like to have a tour of the school.

2013-2014 The Re-Registration Packages will be sent home at the end of April or early May to families currently registered at PCS. Please complete and return them to the school promptly as we make plans for 2013/14.

New Parent Information Seminar PCS offers these evening seminars three times a year for parents who are interested in registering their children in Pre-School through Grade 12 at Pacific Christian School. All families who have already registered for next year are required to attend a New Parent Information Seminar before the final interview will be conducted to confirm admission to the school. The seminar includes interviews with PCS graduates, senior students, PCS parents, teachers and administration. It’s a great opportunity to meet other new families and learn more about PCS. Our next seminar, hosted by the PCS Membership and Enrollment Committee, will be held in the secondary school library on Wednesday, May 15 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. This is the last seminar offered this spring; the next one is scheduled for September, 2013.

PCS Grows the International Program in Beijing At the end of March, I had the privilege of representing PCS in the city of Beijing. It was a wonderful experience enriched by incredible hospitality and filled with new sights, sounds and smells. It was truly inspiring to stand in Tiananmen Square and reflect on the history that was made there. It was amazing to see the juxtaposition of old (really old) architecture and new buildings that were mind-boggling in their complexity and originality. And the food…well, I could go on and on. The growth of our school’s international program is coming, in large part, from China. A few years ago, we had one or two students from China. This year, we have 10, and that number will likely double next year. What an incredible opportunity to bring quality Christian education to these students. Some of my days in Beijing involved meeting parents who will be sending their students to our school next year. It was great to connect with them and their children, all of whom I am continuing to correspond with at this time.

The Latest In Development Working with the Development Committee, the Development Department exists to help promote the school, assist new families in learning about PCS and work to fund various school initiatives. This includes strategic planning support, communication, general public relations, event planning such as open houses, golf tournaments and more.

Two of the more special opportunities I had were: • making a presentation about Christian Education to a group of parents and teachers from a Grade 1 and 2 Christian school called Spice Mountain School. This is one of more than 30 Christian schools that have been started up in China over the last few years. It is my hope that, in the future, we can develop a sister-school relationship with one of these schools with the goal to share ideas, expertise and, who knows, maybe even students. • speaking in the Beijing International Mandarin Church about the ways that the church and the home can contribute to the spiritual well-being of children and their families. It was great to see first-hand that the Holy Spirit goes where it wills and it IS going to China and changing that country from within. The future of international education at PCS looks bright. Our challenge is to embrace our brothers and sisters from overseas and recognize that we have MUCH to learn from each other. John Sloftra – Assistant Principal and International Program Coordinator

The Development Committee has created an elementary school promotional video which gives a snapshot of life at the school. Mission Mexico 2013 From March 6-18, 34 grade 12 students and 7 chaperones travelled to Vicente Guerrero, Mexico on the Baja Peninsula to express and experience God’s love in action. The theme for the trip became a personal testimony for each member of the team as they practiced “Amor Genuino”, which translates into English as Genuine Love! Whatever the motivation for students to go to Mexico might have been, it was clear to all of us that deep and loving bonds were made with the families whose houses we built. The opportunity to express and share the love of God with our families grew with each passing day! When the final day arrived and the houses were dedicated through prayer, a genuine expression of love was felt by all. The Mission Mexico team would like to thank the school community for its support—both prayerfully and financially. We count it a privilege to have been able to partner with the people of Vicente Guerrero for the past 10 years and look forward to God continuing to use us, teach us and change us to conform to His image and be the hands, heart and feet of Genuine Love! On behalf of the team, Bill Reems

Japan comes to PCS! All of you will remember the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the northern-eastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011. What many of you may NOT know is that we have a sister school, Miyagi Gakuin, in Sendai, the city hardest hit by this disaster. This past month, after a three year hiatus, including a one-year delay caused by the catastrophe, 20 girls from Miyagi Gakuin visited PCS as part one of an exchange that will be reciprocated in November by 25 of our students. While at PCS, our Japanese friends attended classes and spent the afternoons visiting Butchart Gardens and horseback riding. On Good Friday, we attended the city-wide service at Pearkes arena and enjoyed a wiener roast and hike to the train trestle

in Goldstream Park. Saturday found the students downtown at the museum and the Imax and enjoying traditional Fish and Chips at Barb’s on Fisherman’s Wharf. It was a fun-filled sun-filled 7 days that was enriching to everyone connected to the trip. Twenty different families hosted the students for the duration of their stay. Most of these were families whose children will, in turn, be hosted by families in Sendai later this year. The experiences and relationships formed in the homes are usually the most significant memories made on both sides of the exchange. You understand the depth of that when you see the tears flow when it’s time to say goodbye. Please pray for Mr. Fletcher, Mrs. Secord and Mr. Slofstra as they design, prepare for and supervise the trip for our 25 adventurous international travelers in November. If short-term hosting is something you might be interested in, don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Slofstra. We have LOTS of opportunities!

Grade 5 Science Fair On February 28th, the elementary gym was filled with 69 budding scientists proudly showing off their Science Fair projects. It was a great day of sharing the projects with staff members, judges, classmates and family. We are proud of the effort that the students put into their projects and consider them all to be winners. The projects which received a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd were selected to represent PCS at the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair which was held at UVic April 14th and 15th. We would also like to thank all of those who volunteered their time to be judges. We really couldn’t do it without you! Thank you so much. Please clear your calendars for next year’s Grade 5 Science Fair!

Pacer Athletics Elementary Volleyball Volleyball has now wrapped up in the middle school grades. For next year’s season the grade 6 teams demonstrated clearly that, yet again, PCS will have a strong showing in the competitive leagues of Grade 7. The Grade 7 teams also performed very well as they both entered the playoffs, with the boys team capturing their 4th straight City Championship title.

Badminton Badminton at the middle school level is now in full swing. Practice began the first week upon return from Spring Break. Each student has at least one opportunity to represent our school at one of the league tournaments, and the players who will be representing PCS in the City Championships will be determined within their schedule practice times. There was a local league tournament on April 11 and we are looking forward to another tournament on Thursday, April 18 at Royal Oak Middle School. The city championships for grades 6-8 will be held the week of April 22.

Track and Field The PCS Elementary Track Meet is about a month away! This year’s track meet at UVic is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th. In our grades 3-7 PE classes, teachers have already begun instructing the skill sets associated with each event. More information regarding this event will be sent home through your child’s home-room teacher. Blessings, Adam Price - PCS Middle School Athletics

Pacer Athletics - Secondary Senior Girls Basketball The 2012-13 “journey to the tourney” for the PCS Senior Girls’ Basketball team has been marked by success, landing them as Island Champions. Significant ports of call included a 1st at the Interzone tournament in Surrey (where they saw the team that was then ranked #2 in the province) and a 1st at the Islands. They girded up their skill and speed against ranked AA and AAA competition at the Police Tournament in January, turning heads there because of their strong team play. As a crew, they have worked hard, put in the extra effort, bettered from each game, and learned how to keep “inside their boat” when external adversities arise. They had a great showing at the Provincials in Prince George. Many students and staff back home were able to watch the games live-streamed over the internet. The team showed great poise under pressure and continued with an excellent showing. They finished the season 4th overall in the province. Off-the-court ports of call that add to the richness of the journey are the team’s unity and family-like love for each other, for the Lord, and for the game, along with generous and supportive parents and an incredible coaching staff. Coaches John and Jen Stewart thank Holly Arsenault, professional massage therapist, for volunteering her time and deep talent to keep the team healthy and fit, as well as managers and babysitters extraordinaire Mary Gye (Grad 2012) and Danae Johnston (grade 11) for consistently giving of their competence and love. They also recognize the leadership of graduating players Elyssa Berends, Emily Candell, and Nina Radisavljevic in creating an especially memorable journey.

Junior Girls Basketball The Junior Girls Basketball Team had a great season battling against and defeating strong competitors to obtain 3rd place in the City and secure a spot at the Island Championship Tournament. The team of girls from grades 8 -10 has developed both individually and as a community. They have been recognized by other coaches and teams for their skill, dedication and sportsmanship as they enter each game committed to being “Pacers”. After an 18 year drought, they defeated all opponents at the Christian Schools Tournament to bring home the trophy. Great job, girls!

Junior Boys Basketball This year’s Junior Boys Basketball team was a wonderful group of guys who showed excellent sportsmanship when faced with adversity. They had their share of bumps along the road this year but had fun and grew individually and as a team. The highlight of the year was beating White Rock Christian and coming second in the Christian Schools Tournament in Abbotsford. Special thanks to the coach, Brian MacDonald, for all his work with the team.

Rugby Look out! The rugby team is looking good in their new jerseys! They’ve had a great season to date and the team is starting to see their hard work pay off. After an early season loss, they’ve recently been able to win a couple of matches. We’re looking forward to seeing this sport continue to develop at PCS! Thanks, coaches!

Sailing The Pacer Spring Sailors are having excellent practice sessions on Fridays and Saturdays. The elementary team of grade 6 and 7 students is working with the secondary team as they hone their high-seas skills. There is a final regatta in early June. Watch for announcements about the details.

Tennis The PCS tennis team has been practicing and is looking forward to competing. This is the first year we have been part of the local league, and are excited about this new addition to our Pacer athletics program.

To follow all the action, check out the Pacers Athletics tab under elementary or secondary on the PCS website and watch for updates in the weekly e-newsletter, Thumbnail.
