LESSON 6: OUR LANDFORMS LET’S DISCUSS We can see different landforms in the Philippines. Landforms are natural features of the earth. Let us look at some of them. PLAIN

A plain is a wide flat land. This vast land is often used for planting rice, crops, and trees. Many of our food come from plants, trees, and crops. We can also build houses and buildings on a plain. Most places in Bulacan, Pampanga, and Tarlac are plains. Young Ji International School/College

Page 26

PLATEAU

A plateau is a level land found in a high place. Plants and trees grow on a plateau. Some animals also live in this high land. The Bukidnon Plateau is an example of this landform.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 27

MOUNTAIN AND MOUNTAIN RANGE

A mountain is a very high landmass. The

Philippines

has

many

mountains.

Some

examples of them are Mount Apo in Mindanao, Mount Arayat in Luzon, and mount Manunggal in Visayas. There are usually many tall trees in the mountains. Loggers cut trees for lumber. They also plant young trees to replace the ones that they cut. Lumber is used for constructing buildings and houses. We use lumber for making furniture like tables, chairs, and cabinets. Miners can get precious stones and minerals like gold from the mountains.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 28

A chain of mountains is called mountain range. The Sierra Madre is an example of a mountain range. It spans from Cagayan to Quezon Province. HILL

A hill is smaller and lower than a mountain. Crops and fruit trees are planted on the hillsides. Some examples of crops are corn, sweet potatoes, and potatoes. Farmers usually tend their cows, goats, and other farm animals on the hills. These animals eat grasses that grow there. The Chocolate Hills in Bohol is a famous example of this landform.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 29

VOLCANO

A volcano is a mountain with a hole on its top. This hole is called crater. Volcanoes may erupt. During an eruption, lava, hot rocks, and smoke come out of the volcano’s crater. Volcanologists are scientists who study volcanoes. They regularly check on the activities of a volcano. When a volcano is about to erupt, people living near the area are advised to leave their houses. They have to transfer to safer places. Plants can be grown around a volcano. The soil near a volcano is rich in minerals. Volcanoes can make the soil fertile.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 30

VALLEY

A valley is a low and often flat land between hills and mountains. Some people live in valleys. Farmers can plant different crops here like garlic, onions, peanuts, turnips, sweet potatoes, and other root crops. They also plant rice and vegetables. Farm animals like ducks, hens, turkeys, and goats and are also raised in the valley. The Cagayan Valley is one of the famous valleys in the Philippines.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 31

ISLAND

An island is a piece of land surrounded by water. Our country has many island. The Hundred Island in Pangasinan are examples of this landform. People live in some of the big islands. The smaller islands disappear during high tide. A group of island is an archipelago. The Philippines is an archipelago. We have to take care of our landforms. Most of our food products come from these lands. Our houses and buildings use materials that come from our mountains. The livelihood of many Filipinos depend on the land.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 32

LET’S CHECK THIS OUT Did you know that the Philippines has minerals like gold? Mining is a major industry in our country. We should take care of our mining resources.

LET’S KEEP IN MIND  Our country has different landforms.  Some of our landforms are plains, mountains, mountain ranges, plateaus, valleys, hills, volcanoes, and islands.  We get many things that we need from these landforms.  We have to take care of our landforms.

LESSON 7: OUR BODIES OF WATER LET’S DISCUSS There are different bodies of water in the Philippines. We have oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, streams, and springs. These bodies of water provide us with our needs from day to day. We get fishes from rivers and seas. We get precious pearls from seas. We also get corals from oceans and seas. OCEAN

This is an ocean. It has salty water. It is the largest body of water. Big boats and ships sail across the ocean. These big ships can bring people, animals, and things to places in the country. These

Young Ji International School/College

Page 36

ships can also go to the countries outside the Philippines. The Pacific Ocean is the nearest ocean to the Philippines. SEA

The sea is a large body of water. Sea water is salty. The sea is smaller and not as deep as the ocean. Fisherfolks catch fish, shrimps, shells, squids, and oysters from the sea. Pearls are also found in the sea. They are made into jewelries like rings, earrings, bracelets, and necklace. Some examples of this body of water are the Philippine Sea, Luzon Sea, Sulu Sea, and Bohol Sea.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 37

BAY

A bay is partly surrounded by land and connects to the sea. Bay water is not as deep as the sea. The Manila Bay is one of the most popular bays in the Philippines. Big boats and ships dock at Manila Bay. Some people like to go to this place early in the morning to get fresh air. Some go in the afternoon to watch the sunset.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 38

WATERFALL

A waterfall is another body of water. Its water is not salty. It has fresh water. A waterfall flows from a high place. The water from the falls flows to the river. A big waterfall has a strong water flow. The Maria Cristina Falls in Mindanao is an example of this big waterfall. It is the source of electricity for some places in Mindanao.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 40

Fisherfolks catch freshwater fish, clams, and shrimps from the river. The Cagayan River in Luzon is the longest river in the Philippines. Another famous river is the Pasig River in Metro Manila. STREAM

A stream is a small body of fresh water. It is smaller than a river. It is usually shallow. We can wash clothes in a stream. Many children enjoy bathing in a stream because of its clean water. Stream water is also used to water nearby plants. Animals drink from a stream and take a bath there too.

Young Ji International School/College

Page 41

SPRING

Fresh spring water comes from the ground. Water from the spring can be cold or hot. It is believed that water from hot springs can cure some body pains. We should help preserve our bodies of water. We should not dump our trash in rivers and streams. We need water in order to live. We have to keep the sources of water clean for us and the future generation.

LESSON 13: OUR RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS  Filipinos practice and observe many traditions.  These are some traditions that Catholic Filipinos observe: 1. Holy Week

Holy

terrestrial television and radio stations sign-off (except

radio

stations owned by the Catholic church). Those that do operate truncate broadcasting hours feature religious programming, films, news coverage of religious ceremonies and deviates regular programming. Many communities observe Spanishinfluenced Catholic rituals such as processions, with many having been syncretized with pre-Hispanic beliefs. This is evident in local practices and the many superstitions associated with the occasion. 2.

Santacruzan

Santacruzan is a religious-historical beauty pageant held in many cities, towns and even small villages throughout the Philippines during the month of May.

This custom and

celebration started after the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 and after the publication circa 1867 of Mariano Sevilla’s translation of the devotional Flores de Maria or Flowers of Mary. Since May is also the month dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the celebration is also known as Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May). The festivity commemorates Young Ji International School/College

the search of the Holy Cross

by

Queen

Helena and her son, the newly converted emperor

Constantine

the Great.

After the

Holy Cross was found in Jerusalem and brought back to Rome, there was joyful celebration for thanksgiving. Nine days of prayer (a novena) in honor of the Holy Cross precedes the Santacruzan or Flores de Mayo. Introduced by the Spaniards, this festival has since become part of Filipino traditions identified with youth, love and romance. Beautiful town belles are selected to participate in this colorful pageant parade representing various historical-religious figures. The stars are selected not for their looks alone, but for their embodiment of traditional feminine qualities. It honors beautiful Philippine maidens and their handsome escorts under the hand-carried bamboo arches adorned by fragrant native flowers.

3. All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day All Saints' Day is a celebration of all Christian saints, particularly those who have no special feast days of their own, in many Roman Catholic, Anglican and Protestant churches. In many western churches it is annually held November 1 and in many eastern churches it is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. It is also known as All Hallows Tide, All-Hallomas, or All Hallows' Day.

All

Souls’

Day, in Roman

Catholicism,

a day for

commemoration of all the faithful departed, those baptized Christians who are believed to be in purgatory because they died with the guilt of lesser sins on their souls. It is observed on November 2. Roman Catholic doctrine holds that the prayers of the faithful on earth will help cleanse these souls in order to fit them for the vision of God in heaven, and the day is dedicated to prayer and remembrance. Requiem masses are commonly held,

Young Ji International School/College

Page 67

and many people visit and sometimes decorate the graves of loved ones.

4. Christmas People in the Philippines like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible! The playing of Christmas carols in shops can start in September! The formal Christmas celebrations start on 16th December when many people go the the first of nine predawn or early morning masses. The last mass is on Christmas day. The Christmas celebrations continue to the First Sunday in

Young Ji International School/College

Page 68

January when Epiphany or the Feast of the Three Kings is celebrated. In the Philippines the early masses held before Christmas are called the 'Misa de Gallo' or 'Simbang Gabi' in Filipino. Most Filipinos are Christians with about 80% of people being Catholics. It's the only Asian country with so many Christians. Because of this, Christmas is the most important holiday in the Philippines. December is actually one of the 'cooler' months of the year in the Philippines. The Philippines only has two real seasons, wet (June to October) and dry (April and May). December is one of the months in between the wet and dry seasons.

Young Ji International School/College

Christmas customs in the Philippines are a mixture of western and native Filipino traditions. (Christianity became widely known in The Philippines in the 1500s when missionaries from countries like Portugal and Spain traveled to the area.) So people

During Christmas Eve evening, Christians go to church to hear the last 'simbang gabi' or the Christmas Eve mass. This is followed by a midnight feast, called Noche Buena. The Noche Buena is a big, open house, celebration with family, friends and neighbors dropping in to wish everyone a Merry Christmas! Most households would have several dishes laid out and would normally include: lechon (roasted pig), ham, fruit salad, rice cakes (bibingka and puto bumbong are traditional

Christmas foods) and other sweets, steamed rice, and many different types of drink 5. New Year

The Philippines has one of the longest holiday seasons in the world, which starts in the month of September and ends during the 1st week of January, shortly after the Feast of the Three Kings.
