WORDS OF WELCOME FROM CHRISTINE BAIN I am delighted to introduce you to the work of Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership Academy. As lead Chief Executive and Chair of the Regional Leadership Council I hope that you will find the information in this prospectus helpful in determining the appropriate support to address the leadership and development needs that the changing NHS system requires. The offer outlined from Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership Academy is presented in response to the objectives set out in our strategy. That in turn was developed following engagement across the region about what you believe is needed in today’s NHS.

WELCOME FROM KATHRYN WINTERBURN Welcome to the first edition of the Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership Academy prospectus. It is a pleasure to introduce you to the team and the range of development interventions and programmes that we offer the Yorkshire and Humber region. There is significant evidence that supports the positive impact of good leadership upon staff morale and ultimately patient care, and while lots of good work has been undertaken we all know more needs to be done. Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership Academy continues to build on seven years of regional investment in leadership and organisation development. Working in partnership across the region we

see our role as an enabling one that extends the legacy of the activity, continues to raise the profile of the great work that is being delivered and looks for ways to respond, support and enhance leadership and organisation development in the region. Who We Are and What We Do

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO Yorkshire and the Humber Leadership Academy is a regional organisation responsible for the provision of leadership and organisation development, supporting and enabling our stakeholders to achieve their local objectives. Formerly part of the Strategic Health Authority we have been developing leaders and organisations since 2007. Working in partnership we provide a range of offers to create excellent leadership, excellent organisations, transforming systems together. Our offer is overseen by the Regional Leadership Council (RLC) a sub-committee of the Yorkshire and Humber LETB Board, who engage directly with our team to shape the direction of our offer. The RLC is drawn from Chief Executives, Human Resource Directors, Leadership Leads and other interested stakeholders across the local region. The group is constantly refreshing its membership and welcomes new interest and participation. Our regional offer has been informed by a significant consultation exercise with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders across Yorkshire and the Humber.

Who We Are and What We Do

We asked questions to understand the current and future leadership challenges and what those challenges mean for leadership development. The current regional offer is a direct result of the vast amount of feedback we received. It was clear to us that the region wanted more opportunity to learn and develop together while engaged in real work. As the Local Delivery Partner (LDP) for the NHS Leadership Academy we provide access for individuals in Yorkshire and the Humber to a suite of high quality core leadership development programmes and leadership tools that aim to professionalise leadership across the NHS. Developed with national and international experts, the national offer provides a valuable and consistent leadership development offer that gives individuals the necessary support to be the best leaders they can. The following pages provide further details about the regional and national offer as well as who to contact for further information. The Regional Offer

THE REGIONAL OFFER The following range of interventions adopt an organisation development (OD) approach at the specific request of regional stakeholders, including the opportunity to learn and work together while engaged in real work and transformation. Our main aim in adopting such an approach is to build regional capability and capacity so that development is sustained over time and helps to connect the regional system with itself. Developing networks, enabling development support to ongoing transformation programmes, creating space for strategic conversations are just some of the methods we employ.

The opportunity to learn and work together while engaged in real work. We tend to do things differently in Yorkshire and the Humber and we are proud of that fact. The range of interventions described here is not exhaustive but provides an indication of the type of responsive development interventions we support. We are always on the look-out for ways that we can utilise our consultancy expertise and knowledge of the market to assist local organisations design and commission a delivery method to suit.

Capacity and Capability

CAPACITY AND CAPABILITY Agile Working An action learning based programme created in partnership with the University of Derby to support organisations in their understanding and approach to agile working. This is a programme suitable for OD/ transformation and information leads and their clients who are or want to develop their collaboration to deliver improvement. We offer the opportunity to join the Agile Leaders Network, a virtual network supporting collaboration between strategic leaders implementing agile working, and/ or a three day development programme supporting the early development of agile working projects.

Change Leaders Network This face-to-face and virtual network provides learning and support for clinicians and managers dealing with leading large scale or complex change for the first time in their careers. Membership is drawn from individuals nominated by their employers and other communities of people already involved in regional work such as Innov8 Associates or Organisation Development. The focus of the network is to look at the human behaviour aspects of change and much of the content will be co-developed by network members in response to their real world challenges.

CoachNet An internet based coach support system that enables coaches’ clients and organisations to create, manage and review coaching.

Improvement Fellows Development Programme

CoachNet allows clients to search for and find coaches with capacity. Your organisation can track and monitor how effective coaching is within your organisation. It will also provide resources for coaches to access CPD materials and as a communication platform for updates and information.

AHSN Improvement Fellows are invited to join a development programme for 2014/15, focusing on work delivering improved quality and patient safety. The offer has been co-produced with Alison Lovatt, Clinical Improvement Network Director and Hilary Gledhill one of the Improvement Fellows, and comprises workshops, attendance at the JĂśnkĂśping Microsystems Festival and a Community of Practice.

Critical Evidence Based Community

Organisation Development Network

This programme develops a sector spanning leadership community willing to collaborate in dealing with complex problems of the present and creating a space for the co-creation of the future. Running as a series of monthly workshops, it will be enjoyed by leaders who wish to explore the potential of collaboration across traditional boundaries and who seek challenge and fresh approaches to respond to system challenges.

Work is ongoing to refresh our strategic network and provide input that will continue to increase capacity and capability. Strategic calls hosted by the team provide an opportunity for senior level staff to discuss their current work and challenges, share good practice and provide peer support as well as provide a steer to the regional work. The network continues to communicate and connect staff across the region and is working towards an internal consultancy model that provides opportunities to exchange and deploy the OD resource across organisations.

Early Clinical Leadership The team continues to work with individual local and regional and national organisations such as the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management to support this important area of work. We are developing a pilot project to provide leadership development in a multidisciplinary setting to students in the first 5 years of their education.

We are currently developing an OD practitioner programme that will enable ongoing personal development and learning for newer practitioners.

Social Media Sessions In response to a specific request from regional stakeholders we commissioned a social media training programme initially aimed at beginners. We have had an increasing demand for a more advanced programme, which has proved incredibly popular. It is likely the programmes will continue, but again in response to stakeholder feedback going forward we are looking at commissioning a piece of work on how social media is utilised in the workforce.

Working with a range of multi-agency partners and the national system leadership steering group, we are developing a range of support offers to enable leaders to come together to work on local place based “wicked” issues that will transform services.

Team Resilience Resilience is vital as it gives a team the ability to respond positively, to work together well and be motivated to create and work with new ideas. There is increasing evidence from both healthcare and other sectors that resilient teams can deliver increased productivity, provide quality customer service and ensure safe patient care. Our programme develops facilitator

capacity and capability to deliver awareness raising interventions in organisations alongside bespoke, focused team interventions to develop resilience in teams.

Understanding Your Leadership Impact (UYLI) UYLI takes diagnostics used in the Leadership Academy’s Top Leaders programme and utilises these with a day of executive coaching support to the development of senior leaders. Over 200 senior leaders in the region have taken advantage of this offer to look at the next chapter of their development. The approach uses a 360 diagnostic to examine personal leadership styles and capabilities and identify personal development needs and develop plans for the future.

There is significant evidence of the benefits for individuals and organisations of inclusive and diverse leadership in creating healthy, successful organisations. Such organisations build in innovation, resilience and flexibility at every level; they have engaged employees who are included, valued and cared for. In the NHS there is also a connection between diversity and inclusion in the workplace and creating the right culture for quality care. “Innov8, leading differently for better healthcare” aims to support individuals, groups and organisations to create more effective, diverse leadership able to respond to 21st Century NHS opportunities and challenges.

Increase the diversity of NHS leaders, particularly in more senior decision making and governance roles.

Increase the number of inclusive leaders in our organisations.

i-Lead: Identifying, recruiting for and developing inclusive leadership qualities and competencies including the highly successful Accelerate programme for inclusive leadership.

Innov8 takes the form of networks, events, programmes, funding opportunities and collaborations across the region as well as one-to-one support for individual leaders. We are always happy to develop bespoke interventions with organisations as well.

The Innov8 Fund: An opportunity for organisations, networks and collaborations to seek investment to develop more diverse talent and leadership, to cultivate a more inclusive workplace or to improve the capability of teams or departments to provide a more inclusive services and appropriate service. A new Innov8 Charter: A partnership for a limited number of organisations to work on a clear and specific area of improvement to develop more diverse talent that is endorsed with Board sponsorship and sign-off.


Diversity and Inclusion

Creating an Innov8 hub in collaboration with a small number of Innov8 sponsored Associates. The Hub will deliver campaign work in the region such as Different Leaders and Women in Leadership, provide workforce and talent analysis services, benchmarking and develop learning resources. Talent 2020 and Developing Diverse Talent: Incorporating the learning from the local Innov8 work and building on the existing approaches to talent management in each organisation, this is an area of inquiry to better understand the acute talent needs of organisations, what trends exist in supply and demand and how we need to think and act differently to be ‘talent ready’.

This year we are undertaking a piece of action research and exploring options for a local graduate development programme. Accelerate: A Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) based leadership programme developing inclusive practices of benefit to the individual, their colleagues and service users. It is a practical programme and participants are expected to feedback examples of how they have put the learning into practice between modules and take part in follow on evaluation. The programme is delivered using techniques from NLP to aid learning and recall. It teaches the participants NLP tools and techniques to aid communication and confidence to enhance the personal skills required to lead effectively.

PROGRAMMES The Edward Jenner Programme: A free online learning programme that is perfect for someone new to the NHS or who wants to feel more able to deal with the everyday challenges of working in healthcare. Learn in your own time at your own pace, and use your own experiences as part of the learning process and continuing professional development to help progress your career. 20 sessions online, completed at own pace.

The Mary Seacole Programme: A fully accredited Post Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership. This programme is for staff moving into a recognised leadership position, team management role, or those looking to champion compassionate patient care. This programme has been created by internationally renowned businesses and academic experts, designed to give participants a head start in their Healthcare Leadership Career. 12 month programme, 10-12 hours per week (Tutor supported online, face-to-face, residential and action learning)

The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme: Leading to a NHS Leadership Academy Award in Senior Healthcare Leadership and an MSc in Healthcare Leadership qualification, this programme is perfect for dynamic mid-level leaders, whose next role will be leading people who themselves have teams, determined to challenge the status quo and have a wider impact by leading culture at a senior level of the NHS. 24 month programme, up to 15 hours a week, (Tutor supported online, faceto-face, residential and action learning) The Nye Bevan Programme: A NHS Leadership Academy Award in Executive Leadership qualification. This is an intensive programme for any courageous senior leader looking to move into an executive leadership role wanting to drive change through the very highest levels. Co-created with Harvard Business School, KPMG, Manchester Business School and National Patient Voices, the programme equips senior leaders with the skills and resilience to fundamentally improve experience for patients and communities. 12 month programme, up to 8 hours a week (Tutor supported online, face-to-face, residential and action learning)

Top Leaders: Suitable for inspirational executives/board level leaders. On joining the Top Leaders Programme, you will complete an online Diagnostic, following which you shape your individual leadership development plan gaining access to development activity, master classes and coaching from the Academy. 12 month programme, with two residential workshops throughout the year with fellow participants, and up to six impact group meetings. Frontline Nursing and Midwifery Development: suitable for those who deliver hands on care, and specifically designed around a deep understanding of the lives of nurses and midwives. It provides the opportunity to reflect on culture, what you do well, and to practise and develop new skills that will help you achieve your leadership goals. The programme will increase personal effectiveness, development and confidence as well as providing excellent value for the time spent back in organisations. Six month programme with a half-day induction followed by two 2-day workshops together with five online modules. The NHS Regional Leadership Recognition Awards: Held annually, the Leadership Recognition Awards are the opportunity for organisations in Yorkshire and the Humber to celebrate staff or teams making a difference

by improving people’s health and the public’s experience of the NHS. Any NHS staff working at any level can be nominated for one of the awards. Regional nominees are short-listed by a judging panel made up of leadership and organisation development professionals, and invited to join us at a ceremony held in Leeds. The category winners for Yorkshire and the Humber are then put forward for the National Leadership Recognition Awards. Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS): The purpose of GMTS is to identify, recruit and develop talented individuals who have the potential to become future leaders in the NHS. The Scheme is leading edge in its design and delivery, utilising a full range of learning approaches, and sets the standard for fast track development at entry level management in the NHS. As the LDP for Yorkshire and the Humber, we are responsible for sourcing placements for the trainees in our region and delivering opportunities for local training and networking. We are always keen to work with new organisations to enable placements and hosting arrangements. 2-3 years full time work placement with post graduate education, experiential learning and leadership development.

The Health Care Leadership Model: An online 360 Feedback Tool that is available to leaders at all levels who want to understand more about their personal style and impact. Talent Management: We support the adoption of the NHS Leadership Academy talent tools and the roll out and development of helpful talent management resources within the ‘Talent Hub’ available on their website. We deliver regular talent management events and workshops in the region in partnership with the Leadership Academy; please check our website for upcoming dates.
