ON THE COVER: The Trinity by Andrei Rublev. The

Trinity is the most famous hand-painted icon by Andrei Rublev and a wonderful example of Russian Orthodox icon art. This masterpiece is based on the hospitality of Abraham story from the Book of Genesis. It depicts three angels symbolizing the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – sitting at a table. The icon was created in the 1420s and now is exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. (adapted from https://russianicon.com/famous-religiousicons-andrei-rublev)

VOLUNTEER HELP WITH DONUTS If you enjoy gathering after 10:00 am Mass for coffee and donuts, please consider signing up to help serve occasionally. It is quite easy, and a good family project. Donut servers work as a team, so if you need to trade Sundays because of travel or other events, we are flexible. Check in with the servers after Mass, or contact the parish office at office@straymondmp.org. OFFICE VOLUNTEERS There are many times when the Parish Office could use some hands and/or friendly faces. If you would be willing to help out when there is a mailing or other such project, or answer the phones and door for an hour or two, please contact the office at at office@straymondmp.org. We’re happy to work around your schedule and will call again if you are busy on a given week. VISION STATEMENT St. Raymond Parish is a family. As disciples of Jesus, we are “children of God” and “brothers and sisters in Christ.” Jesus himself says, “Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother” (Matthew 12:50). We welcome all to belong to our Catholic family and to inherit with us in Christ the mission to preach the Gospel! MISSION STATEMENT St. Raymond Parish is a community united by our Catholic Faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. We seek communion with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through ongoing personal and communal conversion to Christ and a deeper commitment to the mission Jesus gives each of us to preach the Gospel. The sacred scriptures and sacraments of the Church sustain us. We dedicate ourselves to Truth and strive to grow in love of God and neighbor through community, prayer, study, and service, as we work by grace to build up in one another and share freely with others the abundance of magnificent gifts God has given.

Today’s Gospel “sets the stage” for Nicodemus, who, ’ S 11, 2017 while playing an important role in the religious and

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! The Bible readings for this Sunday, feast of the Most Holy Trinity, helps us to enter into the identity of God. The second reading presents the departing words that Saint Paul bids to the community of Corinth: “the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you” (2 Cor 13:13). This — as we say — “blessing” of the Apostle is the fruit of his personal experience with God’s love, that love which the Risen Christ revealed to him, which transformed his life and “impelled” him to take the Gospel to the peoples. Beginning from his experience of grace, Paul could exhort Christians with these words: “... rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another” (v. 11). The Christian community, even with all its human limitations, can become a reflection of the communion of the Trinity, of its kindness, of its beauty. But this — just as Paul himself testifies — necessarily passes through the experience of God’s mercy, of his forgiveness. It is what happens to the Hebrews in the Exodus journey. When the people break the covenant, God presents himself to Moses in the cloud in order to renew that pact, proclaiming his own name and its meaning. Thus he says: “the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity” (Ex 34:6). This name implies that God is not distant and closed within himself, but is Life which seeks to be communicated, is openness, is Love which redeems man of his infidelity. God is “merciful”, “gracious” and “rich in charity” because he offers himself to us so as to fill the gap of our limitations and our shortcomings, to forgive our mistakes, to lead us back to the path of justice and truth. This revelation of God is fulfilled in the New Testament thanks to the Word of Christ and to his mission of salvation. Jesus made manifest the face of God, in substance One and in persons Triune; God is all and only Love, in a subsistent relationship that creates, redeems and sanctifies all: Father and Son and Holy Spirit.

civil community of the time, has not ceased seeking God. He did not think: “I have arrived”; he did not cease seeking God; and now he has perceived the echo of His voice in Jesus. In the nighttime dialogue with the Nazarene, Nicodemus finally understood that he had already been sought and awaited by God, that he was personally loved by Him. God always seeks us first, awaits us first, loves us first. He is like the flower of the almond tree; thus says the Prophet: “It blooms first” (cf. Jer 1:11-12). In fact Jesus speaks to him in this way: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). What is this eternal life? It is the immeasurable and freely given love of the Father which Jesus gave on the Cross, offering his life for our salvation. And this love with the action of the Holy Spirit has shined a new light on the earth and into every human heart that welcomes him; a light that reveals the dark corners, the hardships that impede us from bearing the good fruits of charity and of mercy. May the Virgin Mary help us to enter ever deeper, with our whole being, into the Trinitary Communion, so as to live and witness to the love that gives meaning to our existence.

The Trinity Knot is known by many names, most famously the Celtic Knot and Eternity Knot. The Trinity Knot’s official name is the “triquetra”, meaning “triangle” in Latin. In Christian iconography, the Trinity Knot represents the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Trinity Knot can be seen in Ireland’s most valuable relic, the Book of Kells, now located in the suitably named Trinity College, Dublin.

MAY CROWNING On Sunday, May 20, the families in our parish Religious Education Program ended the school year with a celebration and crowning of Mary in the Rose Garden. Catholics have traditionally honored Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, and dedicate the month of May to her. We are encouraged to pray for her help in following her example: she is called the first disciple because her “yes” to God made the Incarnation possible. Throughout her life she listened to Jesus and followed, even when the way was unclear or difficult.

The Jesuit Retreat Center, El Retiro, has a variety of retreats and events. Visit the website above to see the full schedule and complete details, and to learn more about this beautiful retreat center in the hills of Los Altos. Private retreats for individuals and groups are also available. Gifted and Called: A Retreat for the LGBT Community Presenter: Fr. Michael Zampelli, S.J.
