SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE
EDITORS NOTE SUPERYACHT KNOWLEDGE MAGAZINE You are reading the 1st. edition of my new, annual, publication, Superyacht Knowledge. The purpose of the magazine is in the title, to offer knowledge to readers on the companies servicing and supplying products to large yachts. You may already know some of those featured, but bringing you up to date on their latest developments, products and services, and knowing more about their history will help to guide you on any future decisions you have to make. If they are new to you, gaining the knowledge of their offering can only improve your choice of suppliers. You will discover small niche companies offering you excellent service, and also large well established companies offering a whole range of services, some of which you may learn of here for the first time. Many, if not most, Captains, Owners and Crew, never attend shows or exhibitions, this magazine is designed, and delivered, to fill that gap, essentially a boatshow in a magazine! I have taken the opportunity for this publication to go green. The paper used is sourced from renewable plantations and with no laminate on the covers the magazine is 100% recyclable. My trip to distribute the magazine to vessels has the fuel offset through Yacht Carbon Offset, and the bags that many will receive their copies in are compostable. The companies that have contributed are telling you of themselves and what they have to offer, how they are developing, what they are planning. I have been in yachting for a long time now and I sincerely believe that the companies you will discover in these pages are of the best, the people that run them honest and professional, and above all else, and this is important, they care for their reputations. AN INDUSTRY INSIGHT
They say everything comes in threes, we had Brexit, then Covid, both are being resolved but are ongoing and have caused incredible disruption to our industry, and we now have the war in Ukraine. Europe/ NATO have given unprecedented support to this democratic nation, short of putting boots on the ground, and at this moment the incredibly brave Ukrainian people are driving this evil back from their many devastated cities. At the moment around 20% of the professional yachting fleet are owned by Russians, and without doubt, the vessels they have commissioned are among the most beautiful and extreme yachts around. Many have now been seized with an estimated 1000+ crew losing their jobs. The yachts being held will, no doubt, run up large debts that will have to be paid, and unless something unexpected happens I feel sure these will be subject to fire sales. There are many wealthy individuals that would like nothing better than a beautiful yacht at a knock down price. The Russian population in general have, over the past 30 years, had an unprecedented taste of how the west lives, from a MacDonalds to a Mercedes, they have enjoyed luxuries that have now been taken away. It will be difficult to put the people of Russia back in a box. I would expect the population to in some way overcome the oppression being forced upon them, Putin cannot in a modern world do as his predecessors did, and simply dispose of anybody opposing his leadership. Yachting has ridden over many global setbacks during the 45 years that I have been involved in it, I can only hope that in a few years from now the industry will be back on track and Ukraine and its suffering population at peace with its neighbours.

MULTIFLAP Extremely lightweight yet with maximum load capacity are just two demands made on yachting equipment. As part of multiplex’s commitment to pursuing the demand for cutting-edge manufacturing techniques and innovative materials, it has developed the multiflap – a gangway manufactured from a 100% carbon fibre base. The multiflap is light, stable and resistant to deformation. It is also weather-proof, which means that neither wind nor seawater can cause any harm. With a weight of 4.4 kg per metre and a simple fixing system, it can be mounted and dismounted by a single person. The practical hinge system keeps storage space to a minimum. SUN AWNING SYSTEM Easy installation and less weight combined with elegant design let the sun awning system become a product that enjoys great popularity. Several possibilities of fixing enable an installation on every superstructure on every Yacht. Each sail is individually hand made so it will suit perfectly the vessel’s outline. Miscellaneous paintings of the poles, as well as several types of sailcloth and sailcloth colours, leave nothing to be desired. You can get your sun awning poles equipped with loudspeakers or lights so that the sun awnings change into a party-allrounder in the evening. If the system is not needed it can be demounted easily and stowed in the corresponding bags. MULTIGUARD The multiguard system from multiplex is a railing made from pure carbon fibre, designed and shaped according to a client’s individual requirements. +Stainless steel at the base of the stanchions provides a 100 per cent guarantee against corrosion. At the same time, its simple installation means that it is versatile and can be used in many applications, for example around a helipad, as the multiguard system can be erected and dismantled in no time at all. An individual segment weighs only about three to five kilos depending on its pattern and can therefore be stowed away easily on wall brackets. Despite its low weight the multiguard system can withstand a lateral pressure of up to 100 kilos and has been certified by Lloyds Register. MULTIFENDER Based on the multifender modular component system, all multifender systems
are produced according to
individual requirements. This means that we tailor the multifender to all imaginab-
le conditions so that it can
be used in absolutely every location. The length and number of bumpers used is
determined in line with in-
dividual requirements. To calculate this, we need to know the height between the
top of the platform and the
waterline, together with the height of the gunwale on the vessel in question. With
responsible utilization, the
multirollers are basically designed for vessels weighing up to 12 tons. With this
degree of versatility, our
multifenders – including the fastening systems – are fully customizable for your
individual needs.

MULTISTAIR The multistair, ship-to-shore stairs, with 4mm teak covering on the carbon fibre structure is individually adapted to the specific needs of the sailing or motor yacht. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100% corrosion resistance. The multistair can be used for access over the side, or over the stern, directly into the cockpit. It can be swung through 90 degrees from a fully horizontal to a fully vertical position, with all steps automatically aligning in parallel with the surface of the sea. The handrail also adapts perfectly to the incline gradient. Telescopic struts ensure optimal distance to the hull to avoid damage. They also ensure optimum spacing between the stairs and the hull, thus preventing damage, as well as ensuring safe stability of the multistair. MULTILADDER Multiplex swim ladders are all handcrafted to respond to the demands of the yachting world and are customised to meet your individual requirements – a philosophy that allows us to guarantee the highest standards of quality. The multiplex multiladder system is based on the multiplex typical carbon fibre compound construction system. The lightness of this ladder construction enables an easy and quick assembly and dismantling. The use of carbon fibre and stainless steel ensures 100 % corrosion resistance. Multiplex swim ladders are also characterised by optimum ergonomic features and need less space for storage. SUPERYACHT NORWAY NORWAY – A Cruise to Remember
By Superyacht Norway
With unbeatable scenery, authentic experiences and plenty of outdoor pursuits, Norway is the perfect superyacht destination.
The glaciers, mountains, and waterfalls are all about raw, sublime power. On the other hand, natural wonders such as the northern lights, the midnight sun, the fjords, and quiet national parks highlight Norway’s serene qualities, and for those who come from warm and sunny places, the changing weather in Norway is an attraction in itself. Superyacht Norway guides you to activities at sea and ashore and at all levels. Should you be seeking rustic local restaurants or Michelin standard cuisine; we know where you will enjoy the best experience and organise this for you.
BERGEN - GATEWAY TO THE FJORDS BELOW LEFT Fresh seafood at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri, 1 hour from Bergen BELOW RIGHT The UNESCO world heritage site “Bryggen i Bergen”
Many yachts start their cruise in Bergen, a beautiful city, where they can stock up on provisions and supplies and at the same time experience this aptly named capital of Fjord Norway. With its lovely small-town vibe and atmosphere, houses clinging to the mountainsides, old wooden architecture, fish market and narrow streets packed with cosy cafes and modern shops, it is unique and an experience to take home.

THE UNESCO FJORDS The Norwegian fjords are natural symbols that encompass the beauty of traditional Norway. Places where time moves at its own pace, they are as beautiful today as they have been for millennia past. The Geirangerfjord is often said to be the most dazzling of the fjords. Visitors are embraced by almost vertical mountainsides that are embellished with numerous waterfalls and topped by snowcapped mountain peaks looking like gigantic ice cream cones all year round. Three waterfalls are particularly well known: The Seven Sisters, The Suitor and The Bridal Veil. “For me, Norway has it all. It’s like New Zealand and Canada rolled into one. It’s nature and off-the-beaten track adventure at its best without having to head to extreme remote locations – which you still can do if you head further North again. It may not be your classic yachting destination but it’s one that worth every nautical mile.” Captain Fraser Gow MY STARDUST

THE A1 SHIPYARD AND MARINA – RHODES The new A1 Shipyard and marina, based in Rhodes, is soon set to become more than the current basic shipyard that for now offers a large area of hardstanding, 75,000 sqm. It also has an in-water basin of 40,000 sqm with a quay of over 400m, that at this time still allows us to host a good number of large yachts. For the past five years A1 has run the shipyard for vessels of many kinds and sizes. The generous in-water area can be used as berthing as well as for permitted in-water works.
On size alone there is little to rival this new facility. Situated on the North East coast of the island, The A1 Shipyard and Marina is just adjacent to the A1 office building, where you would be welcome to visit personnel from A1 Yachting or BWA, who you may need to assist you during your stay. You will always be welcome for a cup of coffee with our Marina manager Ioannis (Marinos) or the shipyard manager, also called Ioannis (Tsitses) – so easy to remember and both of whom would be happy to help you with any concern that you may have. Currently the shipyard has a 300 ton travel lift, but this is soon to be replaced with a 620 ton lift and in time for the 2022/23 winter season. With plenty of space in the yard for parking and works the new lift means that we can soon accommodate much larger yachts on the hard standing. Drawing on our substantial experience both in the Rhodes shipyard and with A1’s technical work carried out in Athens, we have a record of effecting high quality refit and repair projects and intend to continue and improve on these in our upgraded facility. All kind of work can be organized, from engineering, electronics, plumbing and pipe fitting, to interior work such as cleaning and canvas making. Worthy of note is perhaps our paint team lead by a painter who gained his expertise during 15 years of service at Feadship in Holland before returning home to Rhodes: not the kind of experience

altogether expected on a Greek island. Naturally the team produces a high-quality product, their yacht refinishing is excellent, they already have a number of happy clients for reference. To compliment the fine painting we also offer sand blasting, anti-fouling and anti-osmosis work as well as scaffolding and shrink wrapping and of course work on shafts and props. Our team will help you to project manage your refit: indeed that is how A1 came into existence, with an excellent repair, of serious proportions, to a Lloyds A1 class yacht more than 20 years ago. Ever since we have been structuring repairs and refits in whatever facilities we could access across Greece, but now we can both offer the yacht knowhow and control the environment in an A1-owned facility, ensuring a totally positive experience for all. In addition to the services described above (and many more not mentioned) we are happy to be able to announce that we have just negotiated a license to provide all services and spare parts duty free. This is a substantial saving of 24% for the owner. Having known our clients for so many years we realize just how important the vessels budget can be and that this is significant for the management of yachts. Very few other facilities in Greece are able to offer this option. Set near Rhodes town, The A1 Shipyard and Marina allows easy access to the entertainment the island has to offer, perfect for crew in their off periods. This includes many restaurants, cafes and cinemas as well as good local shops for personal items. Also in the district many technical items for the yacht can be found. The surrounding countryside is rich in places of interest and contains beautiful mountainous areas scattered with villages and natural experiences. For enthusiasts there is much to enjoy in terms of wildlife, with a host of bird life from golden eagles to deer and small mammals. Sailing, golf, go carting, horse riding and bowling are some of the other activities that can be enjoyed while in Rhodes.

The nearby international airport has links to many places, near and far, during the summer and off season and has regular 40 minute flights to Athens. If you were to bring your yacht to us throughout the winter refit break, with the space available to us we are sure we could fit you in, and with easy access by air, you could also bring in your own specialist technicians to work on your vessel. We also have abundant local accommodation available to house them or crew if they wish to live shoreside. Locally we have day workers should you need them. AND TO FUTURE PLANS: While we have a marina available both winter and summer, around which we are planning to add a beautiful range of facilities, restaurants, cafes, shops etc we will also be adding facilities, beyond those available locally, for the crew, including a gym and office space. The new marina area will be popular locally and it will soon become a busy, buzzing area with a new swimming pool and also access to sea-bathing outside of the yacht basin. Plans for an even larger yacht lift, beyond our soon to be installed 620 ton lift, are underway and we will keep you informed as things develop. Planning for the area has been a challenge that is now behind us, and we are convinced that it will, when completed, be one of the most attractive facilities in the eastern Mediterranean, but one you can begin using now. Having negotiated the regulations, and applied for the many permissions required for expansion, we are now ready to go ahead with the very exciting plans in place for the area. We would be delighted to offer a 20% discount on berthing fees for yachts spending the entire winter 2022/2023, either in the water or on the hard. C O S TA R I C A’ S YA C H T I N G P A R A D I S E By No ra Wal sh G AT E WAY T O T H E E A S T E R N T R O P I C A L PA C I F I C S E A S C A P E Superyacht owners from around the world are flocking to Peninsula Papagayo to access its ultra-luxe amenities, unparalleled biodiversity and abundance of eco-adventures. As the only marina facility in Costa Rica enjoying 25-minute access to an international airport, Marina Papagayo provides insider access to one of the most captivating natural playgrounds in the Pacific Americas. Last December, the 150-berth marina hosted a record number of superyachts with owners using the port as a home base to cruise coastal waters abounding with marine life and UNESCO-listed dive sites. “Marina Papagayo offers superyacht owners a more exploratory experience than established destinations like the Mediterranean and St. Barts,” says Dan Eaffaldano, Operations Director at Marina Papagayo. “The Eastern Tropical Seascape, from Isla del Coco and Coiba to Malpelo Island and the Galápagos, is easily accessible and less crowded.” Destinations like Cocos Island National Park, the Costa Rica Thermal Dome and Drake’s Bay bring ocean enthusiasts face-to-face with tropical reef fish, giant manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphin megapods numbering in the thousands.
W H E R E C A P TA I N I S K I N G On land, Peninsula Papagayo boasts 1,400-acres of unspoiled paradise where luxury coexists with the wild. Yacht owners and captains can take advantage of exclusive access to The Clubhouse at Prieta Beach, a private member’s club for homeowners outfitted with glossy amenities from luxury beach cabanas and a trio of pools to a fitness center and two signature restaurants. Owners, captains and crews also have direct access to Papagayo Explorers, an in-house adventure outfitter that curates custom outdoor expeditions accompanied by naturalist guides including outrigger canoeing, wilderness hikes, bioluminescence paddles, mountain biking, coral gardening and waterbiking. Surfers can head to Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point to ride Costa Rica’s world-famous breaks. Later this year, Papagayo Explorers will launch a new wilderness outpost featuring a series of hanging bridges, ziplines and over 12 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails within 200 acres of protected wildlands at Papagayo’s spectacular Palmares Preserve. In addition, an 18-hole, par-72, Arnold Palmer-designed course wends through emerald forests buzzing with monkey chatter and to precipitous elevations affording dramatic views of Culebra Bay. The adjacent tennis center features four clay har tru, one grass and three pickleball courts, all lighted for night play. Rum tasting, succulent steaks and line-caught seafood can be enjoyed at 12 restaurants dotting the peninsula including the marina village, Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica and Andaz Peninsula Papagayo. Wellness rituals and routines are easy to maintain with three lavish spas, daily fitness and yoga classes, outdoor exercise stations and city bikes. In 2024, Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve Residence and Hotel will debut just steps from the sea caves and grotto pools of Pochote Bay. “Peninsula Papagayo’s eco-luxury community, world-class amenities and immersive wildlife experiences are transforming the region into one of the world’s premier yachting destinations,” said Eaffaldano.

AC DC ENERGY The Lightbulb Lady
AC DC ENERGY was founded in 1998 by Christine Keating who now has more than 40 years of experience within the yachting world.
AC DC ENERGY provides specialized services in marine lighting. In those early days this mainly involved replacement lightbulbs, lightfittings for the exterior and interior and all lighting accessories. The lightbulb was the bain of all engineers lives as there were so many different types on board and Christine quickly acquired the knowledge to take that load off their shoulders. Christine was then known affectionately as the Lightbulb Lady and even though today she mainly deals in Worldwide Consulting, Refits etc., the name Lightbulb Lady has stuck. AC DC ENERGY, over the past 24 Years, has worked hand in hand with many of the world’s leading lighting manufacturers and experts on new developments and the sourcing of hard to find products. The company has also assisted many parties to enable them to keep abreast of the rapid evolution and deployment of LED lighting, techniques and products. They have consulted with yachts worldwide, offering advice on small or large projects as vessels convert to LED. The advice and co-ordination offered on any lighting project, be it on a small or large vessel, power or sail, and always being on-hand to keep engineers informed, or up to date on any possible delays or problems, can make life on board a yacht far less stressful than it needs to be. Many of the largest yachts in the world can vouch for the professionalism eminating from AC DC ENERGY and have fully appreciated the service on offer.

CYBER-RESILIENCE Developments in connectivity, the transfer of data in greater volumes between ship and shore, and the industry’s increasing reliance on digital solutions for the completion of everyday tasks continue to bring significant gains for operational optimization, cost savings, safety improvements, fleet management efficiency, and crew welfare. But with the good comes the bad. These advances have also increased the vulnerability of critical systems onboard vessels, leading to a growing global concern around cyber threats. A cyber (or cyber security) threat is a malicious act that seeks to damage data, steal data, or disrupt digital life in general. Cyber threats include computer viruses, data breaches, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and other attack vectors.
Cyber threats also refer to the possibility of a successful cyber attack that aims to gain unauthorized access, damage, disrupt, or steal an information technology asset, computer network, intellectual property, or any other form of sensitive data. Cyber threats can come from within an organization by trusted users or from remote locations by unknown parties. The enduring feature of cyber threats is their ability to adapt and evolve. Strategies to expose vulnerabilities are constantly emerging and new lines of attack are developed, even as barriers are put in place to defend against them. It’s no surprise then that cyber security was ranked as the second highest risk for shipping in 2019, behind natural disasters, according to a survey of over 2,500 risk managers conducted by Allianz.
In an effort to proactively address cyber threats, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced its 2021 Cyber Security Requirement Standard, stating that “no later than a ship’s first annual Document of Compliance audit after January 1, 2021, every Safety Management System must be documented as having included cyber risk management, in line with the International Safety Management Code.”

With that, it is now the responsibility of the ship owner/manager to:
KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE
Establish and record all the systems – Information & Communications Technology (ICT) and Technical – used onboard ships (including make, model, version, software updates, supplier, etc.).
DEFEND WHAT YOU HAVE
Ensure that steps are being taken to harden ICT and Technical systems against cyber threats.
BE ABLE TO RECOVER
Workarounds and recovery processes must be in place for ICT and Ship’s systems, with crews trained and at least Yearly Incident Drills for cyber security. All of this is important because of its potential effect on personnel, the ship, the environment, the charter, and guests.

In anticipation of the growing concerns around cyber threats and the 2021 IMO standard, Isotropic™ has introduced Pendragon. Pendragon™ is an SD-WAN-enabled, Next Generation Cyber Security and bandwidth management platform, utilizing edge computing and AI to monitor, command, protect, and optimize network throughput in real time. It is a single server Security Operations Center (SOC) in a box with 24/7/365 monitoring and support services. Pendragon works across terrestrial (cellular, Wi-Fi, fiber optic, microwave, etc.) and multi-orbit space-based single, multiuse, and hybrid networks. It provides fully transparent, real-time deep network inspection and segmentation that identifies, classifies, and inventories all connected users and devices. Pendragon allows users to go beyond compliant and achieve the certainty that IT, operating technology systems, and crew are prepared to proactively resolve issues quickly should a system be compromised.
Pendragon is fueled by Datadragon®, Isotropic’s intuitive bandwidth management system that enables unprecedented levels of app-level transparency, optimization, and personalization across single, multiuse, or hybrid networks. Pendragon uses passive and active monitoring techniques to provide unparalleled real-time traffic flow visibility. It also discovers managed and unmanaged devices connecting to your heterogeneous network infrastructure and auto-classifies them using a multi-dimensional technology to identify device function, type, operating system (including version), vendor, and model. It ensures cybersecurity risks are being appropriately identified, addressed, and remediated with minimal action requirements.

HOW PENDRAGON WORKS
Pendragon operates on three core principles:
1 2 3
Gaining NETWORK ACCESS CONTROL (NAC) through realtime, deep-network inspection and segmentation that identifies, classifies, and inventories all connected devices to ensure total control of who is permitted on the network and what they can do. Enabling THROUGHPUT FLOW COMMAND by understanding current and historic network utilization through intelligent on-demand control and machine learning, providing granular prioritization by network, user, or device. Providing FIREWALL PROTECTION through Pendragon’s application-aware detection and intrusion prevention system designed to detect, log, and stop malicious attacks in real-time. The Pendragon platform operates as a network agnostic device that can be integrated and scaled from a local network controller to a full SD-WAN solution. Deploying Pendragon gives users the ability to help detect imminent attacks and implement device identity, traffic visibility, context-aware security policies, and dynamic network segmentation to stop them as devices move and networks change. With Pendragon, end users are now empowered with total network visibility and command through an intuitive, easy-touse hardware interface, giving them the ability to understand and command their local network throughput and security for the very first time. For more information, please visit https://pendragon.technology/.
Pendragon is developed and supported by Isotropic, a global provider of satellite Internet services and network management solutions. OWNERS / UNDERWATER LIGHTS
Josip Baresic
THE 31 YEAR HISTORY OF UNDERWATER LIGHTS (LTD.) BY PETER URQUHART
Does it benefit answering the telephone? Thirty one years ago it did as it was a request to design an underwater light that could be installed into the transom of a 50m yacht.
1991 was when I started designing the underwater light, computers and drawing software were too expensive for me so pencils and drawing board were the tools to begin with. Fortunately my employment as a marine engineer and later as a surveyor for Lloyds Register of Shipping (LRS) gave me the knowledge of materials, naval architecture, thermo-dynamics and electrical/ optical designs. Luck was on my side as General Electric had started manufacturing single ended metal halide lamps which were far more efficient than the halogen lamps of the time and they had an output of around 12,000 lumens. Porcelain lamp holders and high temperature/ voltage silicone cable were available. Everything you needed to make a light. After a few days the design was completed and an application was made to LRS to approve the lights for installation into the 50m yacht (M.Y. Lady Marina). Sometime later M.Y. Lady Marina switched on her four underwater lights whilst she was at anchor in the Bay of Palma and after that every yacht wanted underwater lights. Our next order was for 32 lights on a 100m yacht being built in Germany. The lights would be installed around the yacht. This required the addition of two new welds to compensate for the hull angle. The design and installation layout was approved by LRS. On reflection the 50m had her four lights on the stern and the next yacht had thirty two lights all the way round. There seemed

no end to what one could do providing the system was safe and ‘Fit for Purpose’ The first underwater light was called the BULLEYT and used a 150 watt metal halide lamp. Minor changes were made to improve thermal and light output efficiency. In 2005 we started to test a 250 watt metal halide lamp in the BULLEYT and found that the extra power and lumen output (19,000) did not work and deteriorated the overall efficiency. Basically the diameter of the glass lens (62.5mm) was too small and too much heat was generated. We increased the lens diameter to 75mm. and the insert diameter from 100mm to 120mm. These increases in size had to be made to our screwed version which are installed in composite hulls. These lights were known as the UL Ti MATE range. Having cracked how to use the metal halide lamp along came the LED with new underwater light companies entering the market. We started testing LEDs around 2004 and the first thing we noticed was the economic truth in the LED specifications. We took our time in coming to the market with an LED underwater light to ensure that all our R&D which had taken place produced a bright and reliable LED unit – the ‘QT Range’ which then followed on with our latest design of underwater lights – the ‘QTS’ range. The new QTS range has taken over 30 years of experience to develop and is arguably the most versatile and complete underwater light ever made for the marine industry. Designed in the simplest format possible to now accommodate a variety of light power outputs, Colour Options and Input Powers. Suitable for any boat from 20 meters up to the largest superyachts. The through hull QTS 100 is uniquely made from Titanium and can be used directly on metal hulls, subject to surveyor approval, as well as on composite/fiberglass hulls saving yards and installers hours/days on installation and potential warranty concerns through galvanic corrosion. The QTS 75 weldin/cofferdam is machined from 316L stainless steel or 5083 aluminium which is Lloyds 3.2 certificated. Fitted with a toughened flat lens the beam angle is an ultra-wide 140 degrees perfect for running down the side of a yacht as well as along the stern. Available in low and high powers up to 25,000 lumens in blue, white, dual colour and colour change. The key to developing new products is to ensure that the older generation of Bulleyt and ULTiMATE can be upgraded with ease. The aim is to always keep the same threads and internal sizes to allow customers to upgrade units without hauling the boat. We also understand that some of our first boats, which still have the metal halide units installed, don’t want to upgrade to LED ‘as they still work’. We can still service these units with Original parts such as o-rings, gaskets, lamp holders etc to keep them going until the ballast or lamps no longer exist 30 years on. At Underwater Lights Limited, we are busier than ever retrofitting all our previous bulb projects with LED simply by replacing the internals and electrics in an easy plug-and-play exercise. This leads me to mention the importance of the classification societies and MCA. The detail required for class type approval has significantly increased. Structural drawings, electrical and mechanical test reports, workshop approval, and installation information are just some of the onerous benchmarks now required. Attending class surveyors always have the final say when it is a ‘Classed’ vessel, however, the flag of registration and their surveyors can have a say in all matters of construction and safety aspects and decide what is fit for purpose. If you happen to be crossing the Atlantic to Europe, you could well be heading for a small archipelago perched between two continents and what you will possibly see first is the top of Pico, Portugal’s tallest mountain (2351 m). On a clear day this peak will lead you to one of the nine isolated island gems known as The Azores. (Corvo, Faial, Flores, Graciosa, Pico, São Jorge, São Miguel, Santa Maria and Terceira.) Witnessing this after two or more weeks at sea is especially inspiring as the hospitality on the islands, as it has done for centuries, beckons sailors not only to a few days or more of rest, but cool beer and good food. With a population of 246,000 the volcanic islands of the Azores, discovered in 1427, sit astride the Mid Atlantic Ridge, where tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes have been hard at work for a millennium acting as the great divider. The Azorean people have pulled their subsistence living from the sea and the volcanic soil as warmth from the Gulf Stream creates abundant rainfall to enable the fertile soil produce an unparalleled natural world of great beauty. The intrigue of endless pastoral vistas and cliff edged seascapes is fascinating in the ever-changing light and reflections on the sea. For centuries this Mid Atlantic Ridge has risen from the volcanic seabed to offer wayfarers a refuge from rigorous passages to Europe. Today, the majority of the vessels crossing to Europe call at the Port of Horta, which is busy from mid-April to late August, for rest, fuel, fresh food, repairs, crew changes and the inevitable visit to Peter’s Café Sport. Some stay just long enough to take on fuel, some stay for a week or two and some of the lucky ones are still here. No matter how frantically the boat needs to depart, Horta should be more than a stop for stores and repair work. The vibrant green hills brimming with wildflowers, countless dairy pastures, spectacular pastoral vistas in a park-like setting, the small villages of stone houses and the slow pace of life all beg to be explored and enjoyed. The rim of the Caldeira crater is a fabulous site and beckons to be hiked for three hours of blissful views and if you visit at the right time of year, June & July’s Hydrangeas forming the perfect backdrop. Island wide there are countless back roads, tractor paths and trails awaiting the curious visitor.

The ocean currents rising from 1000’s of metres to the shores of these volcanic specks provide a rich source of food for ocean species and make the off-lying-banks lively fishing grounds. Squid, octopus, sardines and a broad variety of bottom fish have been a mainstay of local diet for centuries. Horta Marina with alongside berths to 60 m, plus a commercial seawall offer great refuge in the middle of the town with space aplenty for a crew’s artistry. Please ‘DO’ leave a ship’s painting as a gesture of respect to Neptune and Poseidon!! If you are not in a rush to move on you will find a unique cruising ground at your disposal. These nine island gems offer great diversity. Sao Miguel being the biggest and most touristic island somehow is a mixture and combination of all the other islands. With highland lakes, hot springs and a large city, it’s worthwhile to spend a few days there. Terceira is the 3rd largest island and hosts an American Air Force Base. It is famous for its city of Angra de Heroismo, which suffered with much destruction in the earthquake of 1980. It has been rebuilt and many of the old buildings are preserved to the extent UNESCO has declared it a world heritage site. Pico of course is famous for its mountain and the Verdelho or fortified wine. Pico was also the last island to cease whaling in the 1980’s and in recent years has started a trend to restore or build anew the wooden lapstrake whaling boats in which the crews hone their skills for the local regattas. The distances between islands are easy day sails or an overnight jaunt at most. Every island has something to offer the cruising yachtsman with Faial, Terceira & S. Miguel very well suited to longer visits. With an eye on the weather, even the least developed of the islands will welcome your visit with open arms. Geothermal waters and volcanic caves pull you towards some islands, whaling festivals and whaleboat regattas will pull you towards others and the adventure of being the harbour’s only visiting yacht will lure you yet deeper into this incredible archipelago. June 2022. Paul Deeth, Chairman of the Antigua Charter Yacht Show commented: “The Antigua Charter Yacht Show extends a heartfelt thank you for the outpouring support we received from our Industry partners, who dedicated their time and resources to make the 60th Jubilee celebrations one to remember. The 2021 Show was a small and intimate gathering for a premium selection of yachts that made the experience for brokers and all show participants very relaxing. The Welcome Networking event brought Industry partners together and showcased the best of our Caribbean culture, music, and cuisine. After not seeing our community for two years, the show participants were greeted with lots of smiling faces on our docks. Networking on our docks in the Caribbean sunshine has always been the highlight of the Antigua Charter Yacht Show Experience for industry professionals. The genuine consensus amongst show attendees was a feeling of home, safety, and familiarity. The Island and the Antiguan people have been truly missed! Our 60th Jubilee has been a Hallmark Celebration that ended in a burst of light as fireworks lit the sky as we boogied like It was 1960! Once again, we wish to thank all of our Captains, Crew, Brokers, Marine Vendors and Press for being a part of sealing the stamp in our history books. We are grateful and we look forward to seeing each and every one for 2022 and beyond.”

Several yachts undergoing a refit at the Lürssen facilities in Hamburg.
“A refit is not just about necessary maintenance, it can also be a way to completely transform a yacht,” says Alberto Perrone, Refit Sales Director at Lürssen. Whilst the shipyard is known globally for its many new build superyachts, the refit side of the business is just as exciting and challenging for the skilled workforce. “We enjoy the very complex rebuilds and refits, we like when owners come to us with problems to solve, we want to do the things that other yards steer clear of,” he says.
Lürssen Refit – The Yacht Service Specialists
Full docks at Lürssen in Hamburg
Whilst yachts being launched after a refit don’t always make the headlines, the past few years have seen some very notable yachts enter one of the many shipyards Lürssen has and leave as transformed vessels, with 12 yachts between 70 and well over 100-metres undergoing work last year alone. The Lürssen group comprises a total of eight shipyards in northern Germany, an array of covered sheds and drydocks and a manpower of over 3,300 people including over 700 engineers and naval architects. This enables the company to build new yachts and transform existing ones alongside each other, using the same skilled workers and machinery, and dedicating the same facilities and expertise as they would to a brand new Lürssen. “We know it’s quite unusual for a large yacht builder to also dedicate its time to refit operations, but it’s actually a big advantage for our clients,” says Perrone. “Our workforce is used to extremely complex and time-consuming builds, so we are much better prepared to overcome any surprises. Our time management is world-renowned, and the workforce is very disciplined in the practice of finding the right solutions, of doing things the right way, which is a crucial advantage when it comes to problem solving on refits, where there will likely be unknowns.” There is also the inevitable outcome of five and ten-year-old Lürssen yachts needing to undergo their scheduled surveys, and being able to take them back to the high-performance workforce that built them has obvious advantages. “In order to strengthen our service and refit activities we founded our own refit company, Lürssen Yacht Refit & Services, so we can ensure our yachts achieve their full potential and life expectancy over the years,” says Perrone. “It enables us to meet our clients’ needs better, look after the yachts like we know how and has the added benefit of enabling us to improve and expand our service business.” All this alongside Lürssen’s yacht management offering ensure that, should they want it, clients are able to view Lürssen as their one-stop-shop for all running and maintenance projects, which benefits from practicalities in both efficiency and discretion. Lürssen has also invested in a think tank that dedicates itself to finding solutions to yacht building and maintenance problems before they even arise. This proactive stance also cuts down the time a yacht spends out of the water, which can be a big selling point to owners who like to spend as much time on board as possible. This, coupled with German engineering and timekeeping, gives many owners peace of mind when they take their yachts back to Lürssen.
Why yacht owners invest in refits varies, ranging from the mandatory five or ten-year special surveys, to owners who have bought a brokerage yacht and want to make it their own. The past two years have seen record yacht sales, both new build and brokerage, and many shipyards are now unable to provide a new build slot for up to five years. This leaves a large gap in the market for owners who are looking to purchase a boat, but don’t want to wait to set sail for several years. In this instance, a refit that can be measured in months not years of a boat that has already been built looks very inviting. “If there is a yacht out there that broadly works for someone, then we have the capabilities to make it their perfect yacht,” explains Perrone. “Whether it’s cosmetic interior changes, paint jobs, hull extensions or complete rebuilds, we can do it all in a fraction of the time it would take them to build a new yacht. For some people it’s the fastest route to getting a new yacht.” Kaos ex Jubilee in one of the floating docks at Lürssen in Hamburg.
And of course, it’s not only Lürssen yachts that the yard will take on. “We will discuss refit options with owners who own a yacht from any shipyard. We encourage enquiries because understanding what we do is key to the building of trust between shipyard and client.” One such recent success story was the refit of 110-metre Kaos, who enjoyed a substantial refit both on the interior and exterior after passing into new ownership. At peak times there were around 150 people at one time working on Kaos, and she was relaunched to her delighted owners a completely different yacht. Another iconic yacht to enjoy the Lürssen treatment was the 126-metre Octopus, proving no yacht is too big or too complex for the world-renowned Lürssen workforce. The explorer yacht style has always been around but exploded into the wider market a few years ago and is set to stay that way for a while. “The yacht conversion potential is huge and untapped,” says Perrone. “Many commercial boats are built on amazing platforms, for example the oil drilling vessels are incredibly stable even in big seas, because they had to be in their previous lives.” Many of these vessels are only a couple of years old but have been taken out of service due to the changing energy
Kaos leaving floating dock.
About Lürssen German yacht builder Lürssen has earned a leading international reputation as a specialist for exclusive, customised yachts of outstanding technical mastery. The development of sustainable technologies and innovations in yacht building are firmly anchored in Lürssen’s DNA. The privately owned company was founded in 1875 and is now owned by the fourth generation of the Lürssen family. With 3300 employees, the Lürssen Group maintains eight state-of-the-art production facilities in northern Germany. Lürssen also offers unique facilities and unrivalled potential for carrying out multiple refits simultaneously whether a yacht is a Lürssen yacht or one built by another shipyard. Their connection to shipbuilding is as deeply rooted and individual as only family ties can be; the commitment is deep, the approach individual. Even the company’s founder Friedrich Lürssen said: “Leading in quality and performance that shall be the reputation of my company”, thus expressing the values that Lürssen upholds to this day. Quattroelle undergoing an extensive refit at a yard in Trieste under the management of Lürssen.
sector and demand for oil in the North Sea. “Many commercial vessels are large, extremely stable and comfortable and already come with diesel electric propulsion, so the potential if someone wanted to transform one of these boats is definitely worth exploring, and it’s a challenge that Lürssen would be excited to take on.” Sustainability has been an important focus in yacht building for the past few years, and for current owners who want to move towards living more eco-conscious lives, a Lürssen refit can also help make that a reality. For many years, Lürssen has been developing and including sustainable options on its new builds, including reducing emissions through intelligent energy management thanks to an artificial intelligence system that analyses the yacht’s usage, monitors and visualizes the yacht’s power supply and energy consumption and even performs automated power management tasks. Making a yacht more energy efficient can be as simple as changing fluorescent lights to LEDs or as complex as installing a heat recovery system that saves energy by using the heat loss from the generators to heat the pool. Other successful solutions in the past have included introducing motion sensors to reduce light consumption and installing heat-insulating foil-coated windows to keep the yacht cool and reduce AC usage. Including modifications such as these mean that yachts can enjoy the many luxuries of life on board in a more sustainable way than ever before, and a refit is a viable way of turning a current yacht into a yacht fit for the next decade. Over the last few years refit has quietly developed into a core part of the business for Lürssen and the know-how continues to grow, making now a better time than ever before for yacht owners and buyers alike to the investigate the possibilities. A yacht doesn’t have to be a Lürssen to benefit from the Lürssen world-class facilities, and they can choose whether they make their way to the Lürssen hub of Hamburg or benefit from the shipyard’s global reach and enjoy the Lürssen refit experience outside of Germany. Although refit projects will always differ in size and style, the ultimate outcome will always be the same: that the yacht’s life expectancy and performance will be undeniably increased and comparable to that of a new build, and that the Contact core value, whatever that happens to be for the owner, will be Lürssen Yachts enhanced. A refit at Lürssen breathes new life into yachts so refit@luerssen.de that they can once more be enjoyed by their owners for years www.lurssen.com to come.

Perfect propulsion “Out of site and out of mind”! A saying which could so easily apply to a vessel’s propeller. As long as it propels the vessel why should anyone worry about it? Today, more than ever, there is very good reason to ensure that the propeller, or propellers, on a vessel are producing their energy as efficiently as possible. High quality propellers designed to produce the most propulsive power as quietly as possible and with the minimum noise and vibration are more essential than ever before. No longer is it just the comfort of the vessel’s passengers that are important however, the amount of energy consumed, and the emissions created to propel the vessel are the first issue.
NPT propeller from Stone Marine Propulsion
Stone Marine Propulsion and sister company Bruntons Propellers have been designing and manufacturing propellers for a combined total of nearly 300 years. This has given them a level of experience that is without doubt the most extensive in the marine industry. Starting with the very earliest steam driven ships to today’s electric powered craft the companies have always been at the forefront of propeller design. It is this design and manufacturing knowledge, covering every type of vessel from the largest commercial ships to naval vessels and sailing and powered leisure craft, that ensures the owners of superyachts who have a Bruntons, or Stone Marine Propulsion propeller fitted will be getting the very best performance from their craft in every respect. It is believed the two companies are the only ones in the world who between them design and manufacture every type of propeller used on marine craft; Fixed, CPP, Folding and Feathering. A unique ability which ensures that the propeller fitted to a vessel is exactly the right one for the vessel type. For vessels, both power and sail, that are fitted with hybrid or purely electric power sources the Autoprop Eco*Star propeller has been proved in service on some of the worlds most advanced craft. Perhaps the most advanced being the Energy Observer. Originally fitted with two fixed pitch propellers she was retro fitted with a pair of Autoprop Eco*Star propellers. The Eco*Star has been specifically designed for vessels with electric or hybrid power systems. In this case a vessel of the future has been fitted with a propeller of the future. The Energy Observer is a remarkable vessel, hydrogen powered, with zero greenhouse gas and fine particle emissions.

For conventionally powered sailing superyachts the choice normally falls between the Autoprop feathering and the Varifold folding propellers. The Autoprop has been top choice for many cruising yacht sailors since it was launched to much acclaim in the 1980’s. So different was the propeller’s design that when launched it was soon on display in the Science Museum in London. A few years later Sir Chay Blyth selected the propeller to be fitted on all of his global challenge yachts. A decision he was delighted to confirm as being the right one when the yachts completed their navigation. The Autoprop’s unique auto pitching design allows it to change pitch automatically to suit prevailing wind and sea conditions when motoring or motor sailing, and to reduce drag by at least 85% when sailing. Over the years many owners have changed from an existing propeller to an Autoprop and reported that their yachts are then capable of similar speeds but at significantly lower engine revolutions than with the previous prop, resulting in a drop in fuel consumption and emissions. The Varifold is the propeller for cruiser racers and out and out racing yachts. It is regularly fitted by some of the world’s top yacht building companies including Baltic Yachts, Swan, Wally, and Oyster. Over the years the range has grown to include two, three and four blade versions with the ability to handle engines up to 1000hp. The revolutionary design of the propeller brings many advantages. Together with excellent performance, both ahead and astern, the design brings considerable reductions in noise and vibration.
3
It’s the Eco*Star and a Varifold propeller which are the latest demonstrations of the companies design abilities. In the case of the Varifold an excellent example is the owner of a Baltic Yacht who wanted his vessel to be both a comfortable cruising yacht and also a high performance, competitive racing superyacht. To achieve this throughout the yachts build the team responsible had to ensure that every part of the vessel was the lowest weight possible. This evaluation came right down to the propeller and, as a result, Bruntons produced what is thought to be the first four blade Titanium propeller ever built. It weighs between 40 and 50 kilos less than a standard Varifold but loses nothing in terms of strength, durability or performance. In house abilities and the willingness to work with some of the world’s leading independent designers and engineers are the cornerstone of Brunton Propellers and Stone Marine Propulsion’s business philosophy. Superyachts, both power and sail, are often of advanced design and require custom designed propellers and stern gear capable of maximising the vessel’s performance and providing the smooth and silent propulsion that the owner will rightly be expecting. With their exceptionally broad scope of knowledge and a range of propeller types that are second to none, it is hardly surprising that these two very closely associated companies are often a first, and only port of call for those seeking the best propulsion for their vessel.

DECK / M2M FENDERS INTERNATIONAL
M2M FENDERS May 2006. Mid life crises, Eureka moment or just plain nuts? Whatever it was, this was the month I set up M2M Fenders. I had been sailing a couple of times with a mate and done a little dinghy sailing on a river as a teenager. Other than that, I had no contacts in the marine industry and had absolutely no idea how it worked. Luckily for me, the marine industry is full of people who are happy to help, support and guide you. So here we are in 2022. With established suppliers in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, UK and USA. More importantly, a diverse client base in 53 countries.
From little acorns, salty old sea dogs and wooden boats, we have evolved the business into being a recognised specialist for mooring products and solutions. With small wooden racing yachts needing solutions for Cowes Week up to Superyachts and Megayachts with their own specialist requirements. We work closely with crew, owners, agents, yacht builders, refit yards, dealers, and brokers. We endeavour to make processes as simple and as seamless as we can. Our product range has evolved over the years, and we have tried to maintain a product range which complements itself: • Inflatable fenders • Standard fenders • Fender covers • Fender hooks • Inflatable jet ski docks • Inflatable platforms • Inflatable sea pools • Inflatable slides • Inflatable sun loungers • Transom fenders • Mooring lines • Tender whips
DECK / M2M FENDERS INTERNATIONAL
We work very closely with our product suppliers and are immensely proud of the relationships we have built with them since our humble beginnings. These relationships are important to us. They allow us to work together to develop innovative ideas and products for our customers. It also means that between us, we can back up our product range with a valued service. We are always looking to develop new products and ideas with our suppliers. We all need to adapt to changes to develop and grow. As part of our development, we set up a new company in late 2021 to help us deal with the challenges created by the changes to the trading environment between the UK and the EU. M2M Fenders International B.V. is based in The Netherlands. We run our Dutch company as an exact mirror of our UK company, with the identical accounting package and supplier network. With Made 2 Measure Fenders LLP based in the UK and M2M Fenders International B.V. based in The Netherlands, we are perfectly placed to provide our products, solutions and services to our growing worldwide customer base. We are a small family business. We punch above our weight. We value our customers, our suppliers, ourselves, and our businesses.

With four decades fully immersed in the maritime industry in naval-military, super-yacht operation, refit-and-repair, yacht-management, charter, yacht-technology, and yacht brokerage, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca brings to the maritime industry a mature and acute vision and focus. Initially trading under the Just World Leisure banner in the early ‘20s – providing yachtcharter, hospitality, and brokerage services – Just & Co has recently concentrated more specifically on technological innovations in both yacht communications and internet-atsea requirements, and on the research-and-development and promotion of new naval architecture hull-form applications. Recognising the limited evolution of hull-design concepts over the decades – and resulting lack of ‘sea-comfort’ in smaller boats - a collaboration and partnership was formed during the past 20 years with the Icelandic-based team behind the invention of the revolutionary ‘ÖK Hull Technology’ – the company RAFNAR ehf. This has in recent years lead to the expansion of the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, which Just & Co represents from Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The revolutionary RAFNAR boats and their unusual ‘ÖK Hull’ provide the ability to travel long distances at sea in unique comfort in ‘displacement mode’, at high speed; with little fatigue and stress encountered for guests, crew, or the actual boat. Prime importance is placed upon ‘Keeping Comfort at Sea’, durability, reliability, and safety – allowing a softer and more efficient ride and experience at sea, and a very significant decrease in uncomfortable ‘bounce-and-slam’.
“PALMA-BASED YACHTING COMPANY EXPANDS PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS THE MEDITERRANEAN” In 2020, Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca was very proud to welcome their trusted Mediterranean partners Aquamarine Ltd of Turkey into the global RAFNAR Maritime Partners group, with Aquamarine Ltd operating since then as ‘RAFNAR Turkey’. They jointly announced the construction and official launch of the first ‘RAFNAR 1100 Cabin Explorer’ yacht-tender, constructed by Aquamarine Ltd in Turkey, in late 2021.
Technology Consulting and Promotion – International Maritime and Leisure Projects -
Aquamarine Ltd is a highly respected Marmaris-based superyachting services and yachting company, now a member and partner within the global RAFNAR Maritime boat production group, and working closely with Just & Co of Palma de Mallorca. The current RAFNAR Maritime design-portfolio covers serviceand-support craft from 8,5m to 12m, with a 15m and a 17m Rafnar support boat soon to be introduced to the range. These craft vary in design, from purpose built super-yacht Explorer/Transporter RIBs and Open support-tenders, to Search-and-Rescue and Coast-guard Patrol-RIBs. Ruggedness and functionality can be balanced with customized luxury features and styling. As RAFNAR Maritime Licensor, Distributor, and build-consultant in Palma de Mallorca, Just & Co, is providing a Mediterranean base for consultation and construction of the RAFNAR/ÖK Hull craft. Says Anthony Just, founder and CEO of Just & Co: ‘We are immensely proud to be a partner and salesagent consultant for this new series of boats that are being constructed by Aquamarine Ltd / RAFNAR Turkey under Melis Giraud’s keen-eyed supervision and direction - for both the local Turkish and Mediterranean markets, and for broader international markets.’ For inquiries and sales, contact ‘Just & Co / RAFNAR Spain’, Palma de Mallorca. OWNERS / HILL ROBINSON
HILL ROBINSON
TAKING CARE OF THE OWNERSHIP JOURNEY Providing unparalleled services to assist in the safe, efficient and successful running of superyachts, Hill Robinson’s strength lies in its ability to advise clients on every element of the ownership journey. With an extensive range of in-house expertise spanning pre-purchase surveys to crew employment and yacht management, Hill Robinson provides an insight into the inner workings of three of its core departments.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT Hill Robinson’s team of highly qualified project managers work to ensure the timely and costeffective completion of each build or refit project. Having been involved with some of the industry’s most iconic and significant vessels, the project management team provide owners with exceptional value, enhanced quality control and a smoother new build or refit experience. “Our service is, quite frankly, a dream for any client,” says Karl Hartmann, Partner at Hill Robinson. “We deliver peace of mind and structure. We offer, and continuously prove, that we are the trusted partner they need by taking the hassle away and supporting them. To do this, we set up a dedicated team with one senior point of contact and we take clients through the whole process, giving them just as much involvement as they wish to have.” As well as resolving conflicts between the various trades and vendors – who will invariably be trying to work in the same space at the same time – a project manager will help to drive a project forward by managing expectations and focusing on the bigger picture. As Chris Wright, Senior Technical Manager at Hill Robinson, explains, “While crew might see minor aesthetic imperfections, the project manager must focus on what the client wants. If the parameters are met per the contract, it’s important to keep the project progressing forward.” While any yacht can enlist Hill Robinson’s project management services, regardless of whether the yacht is managed by Hill Robinson or not, all projects under its management will still benefit from Hill Robinson’s extensive technical team and market share. “We have a lot of buying power because of the amount of business we do fleet wide,” adds Chris. “As such, we have developed strong relationships with shipyards and vendors, which means our clients benefit from the
OWNERS / HILL ROBINSON
company’s market sway and our ability to negotiate contracts and secure more competitive pricing.” In addition, Hill Robinson has a well-developed project management office that supports the project teams with additional capacity such as reporting, administration, accounting, contract support, procurement and logistics. This means that every project is supported by a host of additional professionals behind the scenes, who ensure that the process runs smoothly, on-time and within budget. Whether it’s a five-year survey, interior refit or paint job, any refit project on a sizeable superyacht is a significant undertaking and will often incorporate multiple works to maximise the time spent in the shipyard. For a captain already occupied with managing their crew and other day-to-day responsibilities, coordination and overseeing such works can be excessive. Enlisting a full-time project manager takes this burden away from the captain while saving the owner time and money.
PRE-PURCHASE AND CONDITION SURVEYS There are many reasons why carrying out a full condition survey of a superyacht might be a good idea. Whether a potential buyer wants an impartial assessment of a pre-owned yacht, or an existing owner wants to understand the performance and value of their own yacht, an independent survey is advisable when dealing with assets of this scale. Even a charter client might be inclined to enlist a surveyor to verify the true condition of a yacht prior to chartering it for an extended period. Whatever the reason, a survey is a step in the right direction to avoiding any unpleasant surprises and giving peace of mind. As Marco Rossi, Principal Surveyor at Hill Robinson, describes, “Surveys are a staple of the maritime industry, with regular surveys required to maintain vessels to a certain standard and keep them in Class or compliant with Flag. However, these surveys are normally only a verification of minimum requirements and beholden to whomever owns the yacht.” An independent, third-party survey can instead reveal a wider range of issues that might go unnoticed by a regular periodical inspection, giving clients peace of mind that a yacht is fit for purpose prior to buying, selling or chartering (the price of that peace of mind is incredibly small and can be quantified as less than 0.005% of the value of the yacht). The challenge, however, can be finding a reputable and unbiased surveyor in a fragmented market. As Marco advises, “Most maritime survey companies mainly operate in the commercial shipping industry, for which yachting is just a side business, and so might only have few experienced yacht surveyors on their team. While one surveyor might be sufficient for a 40-metre yacht, any yacht over 50 metres would require more than one skilled surveyor to carry out a thorough survey.” After 20 years in the business of managing and building superyachts, and with more than 30 experienced technical personnel, comprising marine engineers, naval architects and former captains, Hill Robinson has the technical know-how and resources within its survey department to carry out thorough surveys of yachts of any size.

CHARTER MANAGEMENT For many owners, the benefits of chartering their yacht go beyond generating income; a busy yacht means motivated crew and fully utilised systems. But a successful charter programme requires meticulous planning, clear processes and careful financial management. Hill Robinson’s charter management team is adept at handling every facet of the charter process and coordinating all aspects of a yacht’s promotion: from management of the yacht’s calendar and liaising with brokers to negotiate and confirm bookings, to the creation of marketing materials and advertising campaigns. “Owners can rest assured that their charter operations are commercially compliant and that their personal interests are protected,” explains Romina Rastelli, Charter Manager at Hill Robinson. “We deal with every aspect, such as marketing to generate repeat business, assisting with crew training on charter processes and regular inspections to make sure everything is in order and ready to welcome guests. We offer advice on intricately planned itineraries in the most popular cruising locations and help to identify the key features that makes a yacht unique, too.” This ability to get to grips with a yacht’s most notable features and promote each yacht within its charter fleet in its best light, is what sets Hill Robinson’s charter management service apart from other brokerage houses. “We get to the heart of a yacht’s DNA to create a yacht specific marketing approach,” Kurt Fraser, Chief Commercial Officer at Hill Robinson. “What is the personality defined by its crew? What type of cuisine does the head chef specialise in? We take a close look at the entertainment facilities on board, the lifestyle amenities and the water toys, and learn about the captain’s favourite locations for charter. We spend time on board each yacht to really get into those details.” One of the issues that owners often experience when listed with a large, traditional brokerage house is that they are one yacht amongst a hundred-plus others, adds Kurt. “It’s near impossible to apply a yacht-specific marketing strategy to promote an individual yacht within a supersized fleet. Our approach is to restrict our fleet to a certain size so that we can maintain a real focus on developing individual marketing campaigns that are yacht specific. Hill Robinson was born out of highly specialized operational technical management and regulatory services, so our charter management technique is an organic extension of these deep levels of expertise.” Most importantly, Hill Robinson ensures make sure that the boat is safe and ready for a busy season. The entire process is designed to insulate owners from risk and to ensure charter yachts are operated professionally and to the highest service standards. hillrobinson.com

MORAVIA YACHTING
DISCRETION, EFFICIENCY AND VALUE FOR DISCERNING YACHT OWNERS AND CHARTER GUESTS Having been a staple in Monaco’s glittering Port Hercule since the early 1960s, Moravia Yachting was acquired by the Hill Robinson Group in 2017 and officially relaunched in November 2020. Specialising in providing brokerage and yacht charter services to the world’s most discerning superyacht clients, the refreshed and revitalised Moravia Yachting is the latest evolution of the Moravia brand. With a totally modernised image and a carefully selected team of experts, Moravia Yachting offers owners the care and attention of a boutique brokerage house with all the expertise, stability and strength of a global group.
“Evolution and change are essential for every brand, so when Hill Robinson acquired Moravia Yachting in 2017 it was a fantastic opportunity for the Moravia brand to enter its next chapter,” explains Kurt Fraser, Hill Robinson’s Chief Commercial Officer. “The Hill Robinson partners recognised a shared ethos when it came to how Moravia has approached business over the past 50-plus years: Moravia has always been renowned for care and attention of individual needs and focuses on adding as much value as possible to the client.” Hill Robinson was founded on the partners’ understanding that there is a need for highly specialised yacht management services around operational expertise; services that ultimately save yacht owners significant amounts of money and insulate them from risk. It’s always been integral for Hill Robinson to maintain its pure focus on these essential services to owners instead of being influenced by the commission-led services, such as brokerage. The two brands, therefore, are very complimentary and work together hand in glove, but they are two separate businesses. One of the things Kurt found particularly appealing about the Moravia setup was its ability to provide a more personalised and detailed service on a client-by-client basis, with a purposefully focused fleet compared to the much larger fleets of the more traditional brokerage companies. “But what makes it especially interesting now is that this more intimate brokerage firm also has

the backing of a large business that is very well funded, with extremely deep pools of talent and expertise,” he adds “That knowledge and expertise are ready for a retail company to utilise and benefit from, and Moravia is precisely that. That is unique in the market.” The most important aspect of the rebranding process was ensuring that Moravia Yachting is completely aligned with the philosophy of Hill Robinson, which means super-serving clients, maintaining an acute focus on client needs, and providing a niche approach that differs from the larger brokerage houses. To fundamentally mirror Hill Robinson’s ethos, Moravia needed a handpicked team of individuals that believed in the strength of a highly cooperative team. “It has to be about the value we are giving clients,” says Kurt. “It can’t be driven by the commission. Otherwise, the original intent or purpose of Hill Robinson disappears. So, we have a growing team of great people from across the sales and charter sides of the business. We’re continuing to build Moravia Yachting around people looking to leverage Hill Robinson’s strength in this empowered, team-led environment.” Working at a brokerage house like Moravia Yachting – which is designed to be highly flexible and responsive to client needs while having the complete backing of Hill Robinson – is a very empowering proposition for a broker. Since the relaunch, Moravia has built a team of highly qualified brokerage professionals focused on higher levels of client service excellence thanks to the support of Hill Robinson’s team of technical and operational experts willing to jump in and assist. One such recruit is Adam Papadakis who, having joined Moravia Yachting as Head of Sales in 2021, reflects on the decision as an easy one. “There are moments in life when a ‘bulb’ of excitement lights above our head and that’s exactly what happened when the opportunity to join Moravia came up,” he explains. “It’s a dynamic and enthusiastic, but discreet, team with support from Hill Robinson, a huge network of clients and impressive potential for further growth. The opportunity to work with the company’s founders and each one of the Moravia team was an immensely exciting prospect for me and has been a unique experience ever since!” Having studied naval architecture and marine engineering at university, Adam began his yachting career in London working within the new-build division of a prominent yacht brokerage house, gaining a solid foundation in owner representation, negotiations and the construction of

various yacht types and sizes. Working alongside some of the most eminent yacht brokers in the industry, Adam was eventually drawn to the commercial side of the business and soon transitioned to become a sales broker, enabling many clients to benefit from his technical knowhow, commercial aptitude and client-facing skills. “It’s been a long road to get to where I am today,” Adam comments. “But working in different sectors within the industry has allowed me to view the entire ownership journey from a client perspective and given me a thorough understanding of the qualities that buyers and sellers need in a yacht broker.” Head of Charter and Senior Broker William Molloy also joined Moravia Yachting in 2021 and is now able to share his experiences and expertise with the burgeoning charter team. “Moravia Yachting is powered by Hill Robinson and it really is a team environment where everyone is nurtured and supported to achieve the best they can,” he says. Having started his career working in his family’s fine-dining restaurant, William later completed a degree in maritime studies at Southampton University. His career path eventually led him to work on superyachts for 10 years, running the interior on five different yachts ranging from 44 to 64 metres and cruising all corners of the Mediterranean and around the world. William now enjoys spending time with his family exploring the Mediterranean on sailing yachts, as well as regularly participating in regattas such as Les Voiles d’Antibes and Les Voiles de St-Tropez. “Everything I have ever done has perfectly qualified me to give good advice to clients about what type of boat to charter and the best locations to visit by boat,” reflects William. Since transitioning to his first shoreside role as retail charter broker in 2007, William has overseen over 200 MYBA charter deals, as well as sold six yachts, a new build project and a berth. Over the next couple of years, Hill Robinson will be looking to expand the Moravia Yachting team further and grow the business. The synergy between the two companies promises optimal value alongside peerless management on a global scale. moraviayachting.mc

Yacht owners looking for a legally secure and economical solution for the purchase and operation of their yacht no longer have so many options after the leasing models in the EU with a “VAT PAID certificate” were abolished due to legal violations. After all, VAT is one of the essential items in purchasing a yacht, at 18-25%, depending on the EU country. Only suitable commercial arrangements remain to keep the yacht for EU-resident beneficial owners and users VAT-neutral. Many owners, especially from Central European countries with strict tax conditions, rarely charter the yacht 100% to third parties but often want to use a significant part of it themselves. Such an owner-self-charter for special conditions is possible, but always plus VAT payable on the charter, depending on the start of the charter and the routes. However, so that a self-charter does not torpedo the commerciality of the overall solution, the construct must be established in jurisdictions that recognise a self-charter as a commercial activity. In Germany, for example, this would not be the case. In addition to a charter, the yacht’s genuine private user lease is also conceivable. Still, in contrast to a commercial shipping company model, the operating costs are incurred privately. They cannot be handled via the shipping company through a profit and loss account. The genuine use lease must be calculated in real terms, and at the end of the term, it must have the usual residual market value of the yacht. This means that the lessee can decide whether to return the leased object, extend the contract if necessary or purchase the leased object at the real residual value and pay tax on the purchase price. An interesting aspect of such “genuine” use leasing is that VAT on the leasing instalments can be structured according to use within or outside EU territorial waters. To this end, various jurisdictions give the option of providing appropriate evidence of the rate of use outside the EU, leading to a reduction in VAT. In recent years, we have developed various arrangements to bring large yachts into circulation with measurable financial benefits for the owners and operators. Saving high liquidity is still possible, but achieving it has become more complex.

BRIDGE / STERLING LACQUER MFG. COMPANY
THE STERLING LACQUER MANUFACTURING COMPANY A SHORT HISTORY
BY ANNE MCCARTHY
THE ORIGINS OF STERLING The entity that would evolve to be the Sterling Lacquer Manufacturing Company was founded in 1907. Then it was known as the Morris Mayer Company. It subsequently became the Mitchell Mayer Company when brothers Leo J. Mitchell, born 1895, and John W. Mitchell, born 1888, joined the company. That name remained until around 1937, when it changed to the Sterling Lacquer Manufacturing Company, reflecting its entry into the development and production of Nitrocellulose lacquer coatings. Sterling’s current president, Leo V. Mitchell, worked in the plant at an early age, on Saturdays, school holidays and during summer vacations. Leo J. Mitchell was the first to join the Morris Mayer company around 1920 and his brother, John W. Mitchell, joined the company around 1933. John and Leo purchased the Morris Mayer company and changed the name, but sadly Leo died unexpectedly in an accident in December 1945 after which John became the president of the company. In 1937, Sterling moved to a location in the central part of St. Louis, Missouri, and remained there until 1961 before another move to Brannon Avenue, its current location, in the southwestern part of the city.
STERLING’S CURRENT PRESIDENT Leo V. Mitchell, who always wanted to fly, was accepted into the U.S. Naval Aviation Flight program in Pensacola, Florida, in July 1955, after completing two years of study at St. Louis University. His father died in early 1958 while he was on duty in Japan. Leo spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Navy pilot. He was in a squadron which flew a P2V land-based, long-range patrol aircraft built by the Lockheed Aircraft company. While their home base was at the Naval Air Station in Whidbey Island, Washington, deployments were made to Japan and Alaska. After four years of active duty, Leo returned to St. Louis University to complete his studies and remained in the Naval Reserves for an additional 10 years. Leo began working at Sterling part-time while completing his studies at SLU in December 1961. Upon graduation, he began working full-time in various capacities, including laboratory, manufacturing, purchasing, and sales. In 1968 he became the president of Sterling Lacquer Manufacturing Company and has continued in that capacity to this day. The business traditionally offered general industrial coatings, air-dry, and force-dry finishes of all types for industrial equipment, power tools, farm instruments, and consumer products.

As the Technical Managers of such an historical yacht as Christina O, it is a big challenge to maintain a vessel with such a standing in the Mega Yacht industry. Respecting the history and the important aesthetic factor of this vessel means deep consideration is undertaken as to which type of paint to use. As a result we decided to trust the products of ‘STERLING PAINTS’. Now, after ten years of use, we are in a position to say that our decision was correct in every aspect. Yours faithfully Costas Carabelas C.C.T.O. Sterling was one of only a very few early paint manufacturers to see the possibilities for high-quality, durable aircraft and marine coatings that could withstand all types of environmental issues, and recognized early that these were ideal raw materials for aviation, marine, railroad, and other markets needing long-term durability and resistance to all types of weather and chemicals. Sterling decided to pursue the aircraft market first, as the company had a big interest in aviation. Trans World Airlines (TWA) were the first major airline to test Sterling’s material and after a six-month test on a Boeing 727, on January 1, 1966, was accepted as the supplier for the exterior coating systems on TWA aircraft. Subsequently, Sterling obtained contracts to supply amongst others, Delta, United Airlines, and Eastern Airlines. The company also introduced these types of highperformance coatings into the US and Canadian railroad industry for use on locomotives and cabooses. In its aerospace coatings market Sterling also supplies support coatings for aircraft manufacturers such as Lockheed, Boeing, Beech, and Cessna, plus companies in a number of other countries including Europe and the far East. Sterling also entered the pleasure marine market in the U.S. and Europe. In 1985, Sterling acquired a marine distributor, CP Systems, located in Boom, Belgium. At that time, the name was changed to Sterling Europe N.V. Sterling became interested in CP Systems because of their highly qualified team which had been marketing, distributing, and offering technical advice for the application of these new, high-performance polyurethane coatings to their clients. The first major yacht project in Europe that used Sterling products was the 54-metre Motor Yacht Stefaren, (now Maridome) when under construction in 1986 in Lowestoft, England. Featured in the headline painting leaving Lowestoft harbour, from the editors private collection. After the successful completion of that build, Sterling’s marine coatings were successfully introduced throughout Europe, mainly into the UK, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium, Spain, and Greece.
INVOLVEMENT IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE COATING PROJECTS Sterling specializes in aircraft, marine, and exterior coatings for structures where extreme resistance to weather and chemicals is critical. Sterling has qualified its primers and polyurethane topcoats to meet U.S. Military specifications for aircraft use. Sterling is a reliable and competitive supplier of High-Quality Marine finishes and looks forward to continue growing its presence in the pleasure marine market throughout Europe and the Mediterranean countries. Sterling is a small, privately-owned company, and is dedicated to increasing its European footprint and to serving its clients for many years to come.

THE PROFESSIONAL YACHTING ASSOCIATION HELPING CREW NOT JUST SURVIVE, BUT THRIVE
The last two years have been nothing short of stormy seas as we battled our way through multiple waves of Covid-19 and the various restrictions for international travel and large gatherings. Despite these challenges, the yachting industry came out soaring, with activity livelier than ever at the beginning of 2022.
Calm seas did not last long, as we have seen the seizure of multiple Russian-linked vessels due to the current conflict in Ukraine, causing uncertainties, layoffs, and other employment-related issues for all crew on those affected vessels. Throughout these trying times, PYA members have received the latest updates regarding the regulations and restrictions affecting their day-to-day lives through our various webinars, newsletters and direct member communications. In addition to this, the PYA has played a pivotal role in discussions with the French Maritime Authorities which resulted in the signing of a new anchorage agreement for the French Mediterranean, allowing vessels to anchor at one of the 30 new anchorage points (see photo opposite). We have also been at the forefront of discussions on the new regulations for non-EU crew stamping in and out of the EU. Our webinar in mid-December gathered multiple agents from Italy, France, Monaco and Spain to provide advice and answer crew questions.
