CONFERENCE

The Big 12 Conference celebrates its 26th year, as it continues to promote the strength and success of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of sixth-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Conference is comprised of 10 members – Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia. Widely regarded as one of the top tennis conferences in the country, the league encompasses five states and nearly 38 million people. More than 4,200 student-athletes from across the United States and around the world compete annually in the sports sponsored by the conference. Five teams represented the Big 12 Conference at the 2017 NCAA Tennis Championships, and three of the five earned a spot within the top-16 seeds: No. 9 Texas, No. 14 Kansas and No. 15 Oklahoma State. Four teams advanced past the first round, including Kansas and Oklahoma State, who both reached this year’s Super Regionals. The 2021 Big 12 Women’s Tennis Tournament will be hosted by Baylor at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

COMMUNITY

Representing West Virginia University, the city of Morgantown and the state of West Virginia in a charitable manner is important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers are constantly involved in community service activities throughout the state. The team has a continuing relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the WVU Children’s Hospital and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which makes the team aware of any volunteer openings in the area. The women’s tennis team also hosts youth camps and clinics throughout the year in order to involve the community with the program. Each year, the Mountaineer tennis team also hosts the Martha Thorn Invitational and conducts a charitable giving initiative to benefit local outreaches and causes in the Morgantown community. Becoming successful and positive role models on and off the court are important to the WVU women’s tennis team. The Mountaineers give back to Morgantown and its surrounding communities every chance they get.

In 2014, former West Virginia University women’s tennis player Jo Marie (Cinco) Bohn was inducted into the 24th annual WVU Sports Hall of Fame at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility. “It was so unexpected. As I look back on the previous inductees and their past collegiate accomplishments, I was completely shocked that I was inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame,” Bohn said. A former standout for the women’s tennis team, Bohn put together a career record of 214-73 from 1988 to 1992 under former coach Martha Thorn. Bohn received her degree in sports management from WVU in 1992, and 22 years later she continues to remain at the top of the record book.

me chills to hear “The Pride of West Virginia” play at games today. I truly can say that I miss it all,” Bohn said. As the assistant coach for the women’s tennis team at the University of Charleston from 2012-14, Bohn encouraged her players to live in the moment and to not take the game they love for granted. “As a college athlete you only get four years to play, so why not give it your all and leave with no regrets,” Bohn said. “Then hopefully down the road you can look back and be proud of your contribution to your University.”

Bohn resides in Charleston with husband, Pete Bohn, and their two children, Jada and Xavier. She is currently a tennis instructor at the local YMCA and the Charleston Tennis Club. The 2014 class also included Michael Anti (rifle), Chris Enochs (baseball), George King (men’s basketball), Mike Krak (golf), Gene Lathey (football), Mike Logan (football) and Lester Rowe (men’s basketball). The class brought the number of total inductees to 156.

The 1989 Atlantic 10 Conference Freshman of the Year, Bohn finished her career as the 1992 Atlantic 10 Senior of the Year and remains the only player in WVU history to win more than 60 matches in one season and have two 30-win seasons in singles matches. Bohn also was honored with a spot on the Atlantic 10 AllTournament Team in her final season as a Mountaineer. “This honor means a lot to me. I come from a small women’s sport at a large University,” Bohn said, a native of Charleston, West Virginia. “I also come from a small high school, Charleston Catholic High, so to receive the highest collegiate athletic award one can acquire is an amazing feeling.” Although, the highlight of her college years were not the accolades she received year after year, but simply donning the Old Gold and Blue. “I enjoyed the team, traveling and even the band practicing as we practiced on the courts. MOUNTAINEER TENNIS COURTS The Mountaineer Tennis Courts boast six rebound-ace hard courts and grandstand seating for more than 500 spectators. The facility is located on campus, adjacent to the WVU Coliseum, providing ample parking and easy access for players and fans alike. In 2016, new lights were added to illuminate all six courts for play at night. Additionally, new windscreens were added. In 2019, the courts were resurfaced and repainted to offer a fresh new look for fans, while providing a safe and comfortable playing surface for the studentathletes.

SUMMIT TENNIS ACADEMY Summit Tennis Academy offers a place for the West Virginia University women’s tennis team to compete during inclement weather. Summit features four indoor championship cushioned Deco Turf System courts, a climate-controlled environment with lighting at a competitive level for full sun protection from UV rays and spectator viewing areas to watch and enjoy the competitive play. These courts were used at the US Open and Tennis Masters Cincinnati.

Summit also offers five outdoor lighted Hartru clay courts. In addition, the spacious club house offers private men’s and women’s locker rooms, a luxurious lobby and a player’s lounge with a big screen TV. Members can play, relax and socialize in a pleasant, quiet environment. At Summit, the WVU women’s tennis team has priority at designated times and will be accommodated for indoor play in the event of inclement weather. In addition, there is a full service pro shop and instructional services by professional coaching and teaching instructors, along with on-court technology for stroke and playing analysis. In 2017, five new seating areas were added to now accommodate over 100 more spectators during indoor matches.

TRAINING

The West Virginia University athletic training program looks to get its student-athletes back on the court in a timely manner, while providing quality health care for its studentathletes and coaches. The scope of the athletic training services encompass various domains, which include injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that enables the athlete to maintain optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition.

Multiple athletic training rooms are available for studentathletes, as the rooms are furnished with the latest technology and equipment. The athletic training staff works side by side with the team physicians and athletic administration to assure that the student-athletes receive quality care throughout their career at WVU.

STRENGTH & Athletic excellence and strength and conditioning go hand-in-hand at West Virginia University. WVU’s strength and conditioning staff ensures that all student-athletes are on yearlong programs designed to continue improving the fitness capabilities needed in their sports.

To keep athletes improving and in peak physical condition, WVU offers a variety of training areas and an array of strength programs designed to increase performance. Student-athletes will have their own program individually calculated and updated throughout the year. At WVU, student-athletes can rest assured that their strength staff is monitoring their performance on a daily basis. Equipped with excellent amenities and staffed by some of the finest strength coaches in the nation, athletes who come to WVU know that they are in good hands when it comes to their athletic capacity.

West Virginia University offers a variety of services and programs to help student-athletes maximize their academic potential. Department staff members work with coaches, on campus student service providers and faculty to help student-athletes meet the unique demands of the classroom, the sporting arena and the personal-social challenges they face as developing adults. While many of the headlines center on the Mountaineers’ accomplishments on the court, WVU athletes have also made some noteworthy strides in the classroom. To help its student athletes achieve academic success, one of the nation’s finest facilities resides in the WVU Coliseum – The Athletic Academic Performance Center. The 8,000-square foot facility provides individual and group study areas, a plethora of computer stations and the latest in fingerprint technology used when signing in. Following the 2019-20 season, Giovanna Caputo, AnneSophie Courteau, Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole roc all represented the Mountaineers on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Of the 45 student-athletes to make the

Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Caputo and Roc were two of just 11 selections to achieve a perfect, 4.0 grade point average (GPA). The 2019-20 award winners marked the second consecutive first-team selection for Caputo and Courteau. In 2018-19, Bovolskaia and Roc were selected to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. It also marked the seventh straight season that at least three WVU student-athletes have been named to the first team. West Virginia women’s tennis team was named an AllAcademic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the seventh consecutive year in 2019-20. Giovanna Caputo, Anne-Sophie Courteau, Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole Roc were also was tabbed as ITA Scholar-Athletes. Since joining the Big 12 Conference in 2012-13, 50 studentathletes have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, including 29 first-team selections, four second-team selections and 17 all-rookie selections.

PRIVATE SUPPORT The WVU Foundation recently completed the second-largest year in private fundraising since its founding in 1954. A total of 20,857 donors contributed $177.4 million to West Virginia University during the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The Foundation has raised almost $600 million ($596.3 million) for WVU in the last five fiscal years. ADMISSION AND APPLICATION TIMELINE Admission is based on a combination of high school GPA and ACT or SAT scores. Applications are processed beginning August 1 for admission the following fall. March 1 is the deadline for West Virginia residents to submit PROMISE Scholarship applications. WVU has a rolling admissions policy, and there is no official application deadline.

LISAC » » » Miha Lisac enters his ninth season as the head coach of the West Virginia University tennis program. The 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year, Lisac previously spent six seasons as head coach at Georgia State, where he built one of the nation's top Division I programs. Lisac is a former student-athlete at Georgia State and served as the men’s assistant coach for two years. In 2007, Lisac was named head coach of the women’s tennis team at his alma mater. While at Georgia State, Lisac led the women’s tennis program to one conference title, back-to-back CAA Championship final appearances and two other berths in the CAA Championship semifinals. His overall record as a head coach stands at 111-145. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009 when he guided Georgia State to the first NCAA Championship appearance in school history and was named CAA Coach of the Year.

AT WEST VIR GINIA Lisac’s eighth season at WVU provided him with some unprecedented challenge which were brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. West Virginia’s fall tournament schedule was shortened as the Mountaineers competed in one event of the inaugural Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Circuit. In the event, newcomer Momoko Nagato earned a trio of wins to claim a second-place finish and catapult WVU into the spring season. Beginning the season a month later than usual, WVU rattled off three consecutive victories to open its dual season, including a sweep over Cleveland State to open the 2021 campaign. The Mountaineers faced five ranked opponents to open Big 12 play, before injuries and roster limitations forced the team to end its season on April 7. West Virginia concluded the season with a 3-6 mark. In his seventh season with the Mountaineers, Lisac led the team to a 7-3 mark and the first winning season since 2010, when WVU finished the year with a record of 17-7. West Virginia began the season with a pair of sweeps before rattling off five more wins to begin the season 7-0. It marked the best start to a season since 1986, when WVU began the year 12-0. Following a rocky start to Big 12 Conference play, Lisac and the Mountaineers saw their season cut short in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

HEAD COACH 9TH SEASON VELENJE, SLOVENIA

Lisac and the Mountaineers finished the 2019 season with a record of 10-12, the best mark WVU had achieved since 2010 (17-7). WVU competed against six ranked opponents in 2019, including four in the top 25 nationally, and swept four opponents. West Virginia’s four sweeps were the most since 2008, when WVU finished the season with eight. Led by two 30-win seasons from Anne-Sophie Courteau and Anastasiia Bovolskaia, six Mountaineers finished with 15 or more wins, five finished with 20 or more wins and three finished with 25 or more wins. Seven Mountaineers were named to Academic AllBig 12 teams in 2019, including five studentathletes who were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the most in the Big 12 conference. Abigail Rosiello capped the season by being named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District and All-America Teams, West Virginia’s second selection in as many years. West Virginia wrapped up the 2018 season with a 7-14 overall record while competing against at least eight teams ranked in the top 50 of the ITA/Oracle team rankings for the second consecutive year. The highlight of the campaign came with a 4-1 win over Iowa State, WVU’s first Big 12 conference win in program history. The win solidified the program’s growth under Lisac’s watch and marked another milestone in his goal to become consistent Big 12 contenders. In addition to leading WVU past in-state rival Marshall for the second straight year, West Virginia also saw four Mountaineers post at least 20 wins in singles and doubles play during the year. Paula Goetz capped the season by being named to the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District and AllAmerica Teams, the Mountaineers’ first selection in program history. WVU concluded the 2017 campaign with a 4-16 overall record, facing eight opponents that were ranked in the top 50. Lisac led the Mountaineers to a win over Marshall, ending the Thundering Herd’s four-match winning streak in the series. The season also saw two Mountaineers, Christina Jordan and Habiba Shaker, head to the ITA All-

American Championships for the first time under Lisac. In the spring, Shaker led the team in singles play with a record of 8-5 at the No. 1 position, while Paula Goetz paced the Mountaineers in doubles with a 9-7 record. West Virginia capped its 2016 season with a 6-15 overall record, competing against seven opponents ranked in the nation’s top 50 throughout the spring season. Lisac guided the Mountaineers to a No. 75 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national ranking for what was believed to be the first time in program history. In that same week, West Virginia edged Cornell in a 4-3 battle for the first time since 1995 to tie the all-time series record at two apiece on Feb. 27, 2016. West Virginia concluded its 2015 campaign with a 9-13 overall record. The Mountaineers recorded nine straight wins for the first time since 2010 and earned the program’s 450th win at Toledo on Jan. 31. In the spring season, WVU competed against nine ranked opponents, with its last five competitors ranked in the nation’s Top 40. Hailey Barrett earned her first victory over a ranked opponent in 2015, defeating Baylor’s then-ranked No. 82 Rachael Jakes-Baker in straight sets. Carolina Lewis was the first player since 2003 to tally 20 singles wins in a season, ending her freshman campaign with a 24-6 singles record. Habiba Shaker also held a team-best mark in doubles play (12-5) as she teamed up with Lyn Yuen Choo, Yvon Martinez, Barrett and Lewis throughout the spring season. In his first season at West Virginia, Lisac led the freshmen tandem of Kaja Mrgole and Oana Manole to a No. 9 ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in the Atlantic Region entering the spring season. The WVU duo finished the fall season at 5-8 and battled their way to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia. Vivian Tsui tallied three straight wins at the USTA/ITA Regionals and made it further in the main singles draw bracket than any other Mountaineer, after surviving the qualifying bracket. In the spring season, freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole led the team with a combined 24 wins in singles and doubles. Mrgole posted a team-high 13 wins in the spring.

AT GEOR GIA STATE Lisac’s final season with Georgia State was a benchmark year for the program, as Abigail Tere-Apisah became the school’s firstever tennis All-American, after advancing to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship. Tere-Apisah also took home CAA Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Performer honors. Whitney Byrd and Maryna Kozachenko became just the second pair in Lisac’s tenure to earn All-CAA First Team Doubles honors. The team advanced to its second straight CAA finals and earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history (No. 38 on Feb. 25, 2012). The team finished the

season ranked in the ITA National Team Rankings for a third consecutive year, after defeating three nationally ranked opponents. In 2010-11, the Panthers achieved a No. 55 ranking to finish the season, earning a spot at the national indoor tournament in the spring. The tournament took the top 64 teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed an outstanding season, advancing to the CAA Championship final and earning a 15-4 overall record, including an 8-2 mark on the road. In Lisac’s third season as coach, the team reached the semifinal round of the CAA Tournament for the third straight year, while also producing two All-CAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first team singles, second team doubles) and Linda Hricistova (second team doubles). Nakic was named CAA Co-Player of the Year, after recording a perfect 17-0 season (in singles and dual match play). She was selected for the NCAA Singles Championship. In 2009, Lisac presided over one of the most successful women’s tennis campaigns in Georgia State history, as the Panthers captured their first conference title to reach the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. GSU posted an 11-5 record and finished the year with a national ranking of No. 47. For his efforts, Lisac was honored as CAA Coach of the Year. In his coaching debut, Lisac led the Panthers to an 11-9 dual-match record and a berth in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament during the 2008 season. Three Panthers earned All-CAA honors; Dariana Kozmina, Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova.

AC ADEMIC EXCELLENCE Since Lisac came to Morgantown in 2013, West Virginia has been a standard of excellence in the classroom. During his tenure, 63 student-athletes have earned Academic All-Big 12 honors, including 32 who have been selected to the Academic AllBig 12 First Team. WVU also has been named an All-Academic Team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) every year of Lisac’s career, while 23 student-athletes have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors. In 2019, the Mountaineers placed five studentathletes on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the most in the conference. Of those five selections, Caputo and Abigail Rosiello earned a perfect, 4.0 grade point average (GPA). Rosiello also was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, after Paula Goetz received the same honor a year earlier. Additionally, Rosiello was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America Women’s AtLarge Second Team by CoSIDA ad received the Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship from the Big 12. The academic successes continued under Lisac and the Mountaineers in the 2017-18 season. Three Mountaineers, Goetz, Yvon Martinez and Rosiello, were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, marking the fifth straight year that at least three members of the team have earned first-team

honors. In addition to the three first-team recipients, Lyn Yuen Choo earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors for the second consecutive year. Along with WVU’s Big 12 Honors, the Mountaineers were named an ITA All-Academic Team for a fifth straight year. Five student-athletes were given ITA Scholar-Athlete Recognition – Martinez, Goetz, Kirsten White, Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau. At the end of the 2016-17 campaign, four Mountaineers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 teams. Three netters earned first-team honors, Paula Goetz, Kaja Mrgole and Habiba Shaker, while Lyn Yuen Choo earned a spot on the second-team. Additionally, the Mountaineers were named an ITA All-Academic Team for the fourth consecutive season. Six student-athletes earned ITA ScholarAthlete recognition, Goetz, Yvon Martinez, Mrgole, Abigail Rosiello, Shaker and Makenzie Stolar. Following the 2015-16 season, six Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 Academic honors. Hailey Barrett, Kaja Mrgole, Lyn Yuen Choo, Carolina Lewis and Habiba Shaker were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, while Yvon Martinez landed on the second team. WVU also was named an ITA AllAcademic Team for the second consecutive year and Barrett was tabbed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete. In 2014, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all WVU teams with a 3.54 GPA, while four players received Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors: Irinka Toidze, Vivian Tsui, Chahal and Barrett. The Mountaineers also were named to the ITA AllAcademic Team, with three individuals earning ITA Scholar-Athlete awards: Oana Manole, Chahal and Toidze. At GSU, Lisac’s team posted the highest GPA among all GSU teams on several occasions, recording its highest GPA of 3.72 in the fall of 2007, AS multiple Panthers were named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award list. Mateja Podgorsek also was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team in 2008, while Martina Nitkova was honored as the 2009 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s tennis.

AS AN ASSISTANT From 2005-07, Lisac worked under Nick Brochu, former coach of the GSU men’s tennis squad, before transitioning to the men’s coaching position. In 2007, Lisac helped guide the men’s tennis team to its first league title as a member of the CAA and an NCAA berth. That year, Martin Steigwardt became the first Panther in history to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. The 2007 squad set the school record for dual match victories with a 19-5 mark and ended the season ranked No. 36 in the country.

PERSONAL Lisac was born and raised in Velenje in the European nation of Slovenia, where he was ranked among the country’s top-10 juniors. A 2005 graduate of Georgia State, Lisac lettered four years for the Panthers and was a twotime All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection and a four-time conference academic honoree.

In 2019-20, he was a part of a West Virginia team who produced the best start to a women’s tennis season since 1986. Eddins also aided in recruiting the highest-rated signing class in program history in 2020, which came in at No. 29 nationally in Tennis Recruiting Network’s (TRN) annual list.

Prior to the 2018-19 season, he served as the associate head coach at Western Carolina, where he helped oversee one of the most successful stretches in WCU history that included a school-record win total in 2016.

A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Eddins came to Morgantown after serving as the assistant coach at Auburn for one year. During his only season with the Tigers, Eddins helped guide the team to a 14win season, in which they held a team-high national ranking of 25 and upset then-No. 13 Georgia Tech during the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend. Eddins also helped Auburn secure the 15th-best recruiting class in the nation during the Fall of 2018. Eddins coached Auburn’s Jaeda Daniel and Alannah Griffin to individual singles rankings of No. 48 and No. 114, respectively, in the country during the 2018-19 season. He also helped two doubles pairs to secure top-70 rankings in the nation for Auburn

Eddins’ coaching career also includes stops at Pittsburgh, Cornell and Marshall. He helped steadily improve the WCU women’s tennis program over his five seasons with the Catamounts, including setting a record for most wins in a season in 2016 with 12. Eddins helped rewrite the WCU record book with five of his student-athletes holding top-10 single-season victories in Western Carolina history. Four of the top five spots on the career singles victories chart at WCU are held by players Eddins coached, including career leader Stacia Kissell with 37 victories at WCU in just three seasons. WCU’s 12-11 record in 2016 marked the first winning season for the Catamounts since 1997. Eddins’ WCU tenure began after one year as the assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to his time at Pitt, Eddins spent one year

as a volunteer assistant at Cornell University. He also served two years in the same position at Marshall for the women’s tennis program while completing his undergraduate degree. While at Marshall, he helped the Thundering Herd win its fourth consecutive Mid-American Conference championship. As the assistant coach at Marshall in 2010, he helped guide the team to a national ranking as high as No. 28 and a second-place finish in the Conference USA Tournament. Eddins has also coached in junior development programs over the past 10-plus years and currently holds an Elite Professional USPTA certification. He spent two years as the head tennis pro at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington and was also the assistant director at the Allegheny Country Club in Pittsburgh, prior to coaching at Pitt. Before his time at Marshall, he was a two-time West Virginia high school state singles champion, as well as the doubles state champion his senior year. Eddins graduated from Marshall University in 2008 with a degree in business management and a minor in marketing. He and his wife, Michaela Kissell-Eddins, have four children, Kylie, Gavin, Jayce and Carter.

CYNTHIA (WORRALL) TIMMONS AND KARIN RAUDSEP MEMORIAL COURAGE AWARD The Courage Award honors the memory of two former Mountaineer tennis players – Timmons and Raudsep – who passed away after their battles with cancer. JANE LITTLE MEMORIAL AWARD

This award, a silver bowl donated by the West Virginia University Foundation, is given each year to a member on the women’s tennis team who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and team spirit. Jane Little, a Charleston, West Virginia, native, was a member of the first women’s intercollegiate team to compete for WVU. Jane was not the best tennis player on the team, but she displayed the best sportsmanship and was the most dedicated. When she died in October, 1977, her teammates from the 1973-74 team established this award in her memory. WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT

E. GORDON GEE, Dr. E. Gordon Gee is one of America’s most prominent higher education leaders, having helmed universities for more than three decades. In 2009, Time magazine named him one of the top 10 university presidents in the United States. Recently, the website Great Value Colleges named him the nation’s top university president. In 2014, Gee returned to West Virginia University, where his career as a university president began. His leadership goals include putting students first, advancing the university’s research agenda, partnering with West Virginia communities and making sure that 1.8 million West Virginians know in their hearts and minds that West Virginia University is their university. Born in Vernal, Utah, Gee graduated from the University of Utah with an honors degree in history and earned his J.D. and Ed.D. degrees from Columbia University. He clerked under Chief Justice David T. Lewis of the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals before being named a judicial fellow and staff assistant to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this role, he worked for Chief Justice Warren Burger on administrative and legal problems of the Court and federal judiciary. Gee returned to Utah as an associate professor and associate dean in the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and was granted full professorship in 1978. One year later, he became dean of the West Virginia University College of Law, and, in 1980, was named West Virginia University president. He served in that role until 1985. He went on to lead the University of Colorado (1985-1990), Brown University (1998-2000) and Vanderbilt University (2001-2007). He served as president of The Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997 and again from 2007 to 2013. Gee has been a member of several education-governance organizations and committees including the Big 12 Conference Council of Presidents, the Business-Higher Education

Forum and the American Association of Universities. He was chair of the American Council on Education’s Commission on Higher Education Attainment and served as co-chair of the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Energy Advisory Committee. In 2009, Gee was invited to join the International Advisory Board of King Adbulaziz University in Saudi Arabia, and he currently serves on the Board of the Royal University for Women in Bahrain. Active in many national professional and service organizations during his tenures, he has served on the boards for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., Limited Brands and the National 4-H Council. In 2011, Gee was appointed to serve as secretary on the Board of Directors of Ohio’s economic development program, JobsOhio. In 20112012, he was asked by Governor Kasich to chair both the Ohio Higher Education Capital Funding Collaborative and the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission. In March 2015, he was elected to the board of directors of the American Council on Education, the nation’s largest higher education organization. And he served as chair of the Big 12 Board of Directors Executive Committee for the 2017-18 year. Gee presently serves on the council of presidents for the Southern University Research Association.

Gee has received many honorary degrees, awards, fellowships and recognitions. He is a fellow of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest science organization. In 1994, Gee received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Utah, as well as from Teachers College of Columbia University. In 2013, he received the ACE Council of Fellows/Fidelity Investments Mentor Award and received the Outstanding Academic Leader of the Year Award on behalf of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He is the co-author of over a dozen books, including his two most recent, “Leading Colleges and Universities” and “LandGrant Universities for the Future.” In the summer of 2016, Gee announced his engagement to Laurie Erickson, leader of the Erickson Foundation. Gee’s daughter, Rebekah, is Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health. In addition to that role, she is a practicing gynecologist and Gratis Faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. Dr. Rebekah Gee is married to David Patrón and they have five children.

SHANE LYONS There’s a reason Shane Lyons was named NACDA Athletics Director of the Year in 2021, it’s because he spends endless hours daily for the betterment of more than 500 student-athletes and their day-to-day needs in order to help them succeed in the classroom and in competition. His open lines of communications have made him a popular role model for WVU student-athletes and coaches. His honest, fair and caring approach has led to success on and off the field. Whether it’s regularly scheduled meetings with the student-athletes or his open-door office policy, Lyons has his finger on the pulse of his department. In the past year, his success and work ethic has brought national exposure to West Virginia University as Lyons’ presence is wanted on many national and prestigious committees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he chaired the all-important Football Oversight Committee and played a key role in the sport overcoming, adjusting and managing the difficulties to complete the 2020 season. There’s no doubt that Lyons’ even-keeled demeanor, ability to think outside the box and solve problems played a major role in having a football season in 2020. He is also a member of the NCAA Council and will chair that distinguished committee in 2021-22. Additionally, Lyons served on the NCAA Working Group on Transfers, the Football Competition Committee and the NCAA Wrestling Academics Enhancement Working Group. His work with WVU President E. Gordon Gee’s senior leadership team and the Big 12 Conference has brought additional respect and positive exposure to his department and the University. He’s been a member of the Big 12 Administration Committee, Finance and Budget Committee and the Game Management and Officiating Subcommittee, while chairing the Big 12 athletic directors committee in 2018. In moving his department forward, his Climbing Higher facilities master plan will keep West Virginia a strong Power 5 institution and position his department for growth and continued success. The Time2Climb fundraising membership drive he initiated in 2021 already is getting new donors involved in Mountaineer athletics and helping the Mountaineer Athletic Club grow and plan for the future. From training, nutrition, medical upgrades and competitiveness, Lyons has already left many accomplishments and success in his rearview mirror and the coming year will add to that portfolio. He will officially unveil a complete overhaul of football’s Milan Puskar Center and open a new Olympic Sports Performance Center that will benefit hundreds of student-athletes, bringing them together in one beautiful complex. Lyons inherited aging sports venues in 2015 and worked hard to fundraise, plan and implement more than $200 million in longoverdue facility improvements. One of the end results of his efforts will take place in the fall of 2021, when all 18 varsity sports teams will have their own private and dedicated locker rooms for the first time in school history. In 2019, Lyons commissioned and announced an economic impact study that showed Mountaineer Athletics produced more than $300 million to the state’s economy and more than $78 million to the local economy. And with the local economy in mind, Lyons’s proudly saw the formal opening of a

new $45 million aquatic and track facility that not only benefits WVU, but also local schools and the entire community. Already, the facility has brought thousands of guests to Morgantown as it has hosted such events as the Big 12 swimming and diving championships as well as the NCAA zone diving competitions. When he stresses academics, he means it as a department-high 341 student-athletes made the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and WVU’s overall department GPA was 3.34 last year. WVU featured 251 athletes with a 3.00 GPA and 90 with a perfect 4.0 for the 2021 spring semester. Also, a Clinical and Sport Psychology unit that he formed along with creating the department’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee furthers his belief in helping the total student-athlete, and his commitment to their well-being and advancement. Ask him and he’ll tell you it’s not his department, but West Virginia’s department, and part of his job is to develop our country’s future leaders. He cares, and the proof is in what he has accomplished for Mountaineer athletics in the past six years. Lyons came to West Virginia after spending more than three years as the deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Alabama. He worked closely on day-to-day strategic leadership, the direction of the overall Crimson Tide Athletic program and was the direct second in charge. Prior to joining the Alabama staff in November 2011, Lyons spent 10 years as an associate commissioner at the Atlantic Coast Conference. At the ACC, Lyons focused on conference-wide compliance and academic initiatives, providing direct assistance to the conference’s presidents, chancellors and athletics directors in dealing with NCAA regulatory matters. In addition, he served as the ACC’s human resource manager and was responsible for the administration, negotiation and mediation of the employee benefits program and managing the conference’s organizational policies and procedures. He was part of the senior administrative team for ACC events, including the football championship game, the men’s basketball tournament and men’s and women’s NCAA basketball events. Prior to working at the ACC, Lyons served as associate athletics director for compliance at Big 12 member Texas Tech from 1998 to 2001. During that time, Lyons assumed responsibility for the leadership, administration and implementation of a comprehensive NCAA compliance program with emphasis toward rules education and extensive monitoring systems. He also served as oversight administrator for several of the Red Raiders’ athletic teams and had financial and operational supervision of the strength and conditioning, nutritional and sports medicine units. Before joining Texas Tech, Lyons worked at the NCAA for almost 10 years as a senior membership services representative, where he was responsible for the oversight and coordination of rules and interpretations for the 25 membership service representatives and was the staff liaison to various NCAA standing committees. Lyons began his career in college athletics in July 1988 as assistant commissioner of

the Big South Conference. With the Big South, he was in charge of conference-wide compliance and championships. A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a graduate of Parkersburg High, Lyons was a standout basketball player for the Big Reds. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport management from WVU in 1987 and 1988, respectively. Lyons, the University’s 12th athletic director, and his wife, Emily, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have two children: Cameron and Brooke. Cameron is a graduate student-athlete and a member of the football team at UNC-Charlotte and Brooke is a freshman at WVU.

INTERVIEWS: All interviews with players and coaches must be arranged through the WVU Athletic Communications office. Contact Reghan Bailey for all interview arrangements. Student-athletes’ and coaches’ telephone numbers will not be released to the media. Every attempt will be made to fulfill requests as quickly and efficiently as possible. All interview requests should be made at least 24 hours in advance. POSTMATCH INTERVIEWS: Formal press conferences will be held in the hallway to the right of the weight room approximately 10 minutes after the conclusion of the match. DIRECTIONS TO THE WVU COLISEUM FROM INTERSTATE 79 Take the Star City/ WVU (155) exit. Cross the Star City Bridge and proceed up Monongahela Boulevard past the Texas Roadhouse. The WVU Coliseum will be on the right. Enter at the light at Patteson Drive. FROM INTERSTATE 68 Take the Pierpont Road (7) exit and follow signs to the football stadium. At the second traffic light, turn left onto 705 and take the second exit out of the roundabout as 705 becomes Chestnut Ridge Road. Turn left at the third traffic light onto Van Voorhis Road. The road becomes Patteson Drive at the intersection of University Avenue. The Coliseum parking lots are directly ahead.
