Masters in ‘Jeopardy!’: Champs return in new tournament

Mention the word “jeopardy” just about anywhere in North America and chances are the 30-second thinking tune will spring straight to mind. A staple feature across all “Jeopardy!” episodes from the original series to the college championships, teachers tournaments and beyond, the theme song now has another installment to hitch its musical wagon to.

“Jeopardy! Masters” is a new spinoff series premiering in prime time Monday, May 8, on ABC. Hosted by “Jeopardy!” GOAT (greatest of all time) and current regular series host Ken Jennings, this tournament takes place over 10 episodes, pitting six former “Jeopardy!” champions against one another in classic round-robin fashion.

With the “Masters” announcement, ABC released the names of the six big winners who are featured in several seasons of the long-running regular show. Perhaps most popular among them is James Holzhauer, a professional sports gambler and trivia contestant from Naperville, Illinois. After his 32-game, $2.5-million win on “Jeopardy!” during the spring of 2019, Holzhauer went on to appear alongside other “Jeopardy!” GOATs in the American version of the British game show series “The Chase.”

Joining Holzhauer behind the podiums are two Ohio-born contestants: writer Amy Schneider and Yale PhD candidate Matt Amodio, both of whom competed in 2021. Amodio, whose 38-game streak on “Jeopardy!” has become known as “The Amodio Rodeo,” won $1.5 million during his 39 appearances, making him the third-highest earner in regular season play to date. His is also the third-longest winning streak after Schneider and Jennings himself.

Current Oakland, California resident Schneider, however, is second only to 74-game champion Jennings when it comes to wins. Reigning over “Jeopardy’s” regular season play for a total of 40 games, Schneider took home a cool $1.6 million. Ranking as both the most successful woman and the most successful trans person ever to compete in the series, Schneider’s particular strength has been in the Final Jeopardy! Round, in which she answered 30 of 41 clues correctly.

All good things must come to an end, however, and Schneider was ousted in January 2022 by another contestant, Chicago librarian Rhone Talsma (who will not appear in the Masters tournament). Of course, Schneider knew her time on top would eventually end, as it was she who dethroned fellow Master Andrew He at the start of her run.

An MIT grad, software developer and competitive programmer, He is not only a “Jeopardy!” champion but also the 2021 winner of the Facebook Hacker Cup. Well known on the quiz show for his expert wagering tactics and narrow-margin wins (wins by just $1 or $2), He is the second youngest of the “Masters” series competitors.

The title of “youngest champion” goes to Canadian tutor Mattea Roach. Boasting an impressive 93% accuracy with regard to her buzzed-in answers, Roach won the hearts of many with her quirky hand gestures and down-to-earth repartee. The most successful Canadian in “Jeopardy!” history, Roach’s 23-game win puts her in sixth place for earnings at just 23 years old. “Jeopardy! Masters” will put Roach back in the game with other Tournament of Champions contestants, including He, to whom she lost during the November 2022 ToC.

The most recent master is a rather familiar (some may say “celebrity”) face. Sam Buttrey, a new favourite among “Jeopardy!” fans, has caught attention for his remarkable physical likeness to comedic actor Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”). Buttrey, however, unlike Martin (so far as anyone knows), is somewhat of a trivia master, securing his place in the ToC after winning the first-ever “Jeopardy! Professors Tournament.” The Naval Postgraduate School associate professor of operations research even got the chance to play Amodio in the ToC semifinals — a previously stated dream of his — and won.

With respect to the organization of the new “Jeopardy!” series, showrunner Michael Davies told the “Inside ‘Jeopardy!’” podcast that “Masters” is “a league-based system.” “It’s about winning games,” Davies remarked, “and we want to reward winning. There will be some bonus for finishing second, but it’s really about winning games.”

During “Jeopardy! Masters,” every contestant will get a chance to play each of the other all-time champs, which will no doubt make for a very competitive, fun and high-earning 10 episodes. At the end of it all, the top three will be invited to return for next year’s “Masters” tournament, while the remaining three will have to qualify again to appear.

deGrom looks to put health woes behind him in Texas

When your team hasn’t seen the postseason berth in six years and has a pitching staff consistently among the game’s worst, the need for change is obvious. And so it is that Jacob deGrom became a Texas Ranger.

Signing a five-year, $185 million contract over the winter, the two-time Cy Young winner represents a significant upgrade and a significant gamble on the part of the Rangers. Yes, when the righthander is healthy, he’s arguably the best pitcher in the game, as his career ERA of 2.55 would indicate. And his arrival, along with those of righty Nathan Eovaldi and lefty Andrew Heaney, served notice to the rest of the league that the Rangers are officially in win now mode.

But in recent years, the 34-year-old Floridian has looked increasingly fragile. He missed the second half of 2021 with inflammation in his pitching elbow. Then last season, a stress reaction in his right shoulder kept him out all year until August. And when he returned, the Mets, his former team, kept him on a strict pitch limit, which they removed when they needed him for a playoff run. And at that point he looked very ordinary, pitching to a 1-3 record with a 4.50 ERA in five starts.

Little wonder, then, why the Mets balked at giving him more than a three-year deal. The Rangers, conversely, were all too eager to give him the long-term deal he desired.

Now presumably healthy again, he leads a revamped Texas rotation with newcomers Eovaldi and Heaney and returnees Jon Gray and Martin Perez, one that the Rangers faithful hope will help make the team a force in the American League West. The Rangers can be seen in action against the Oakland A’s Saturday, May 13, on FS1.

‘The Resident’ no longer resides on Fox

Q: Has “The Resident” been canceled? – Don Sherman, via email

A: It has. It took a while for Fox to make that decision after the medical drama’s sixth (and, ultimately, final) season ended last January, but it seemed clear that the Matt Czuchry-starring show’s makers had prepared what became the last episode to be either a season finale or an ending for the entire series ... not an easy thing to do, we might add. Though some networks have done more than one medical series at the same time, given the fewer programming hours Fox has, the writing seemed to be on the wall when the network announced the forthcoming drama “Doc” – an adaptation of an Italian drama about a medic struggling to overcome several years of memory loss. A few days later, the cancellation of “The Resident” was made known.

Q: Are all former “Saturday Night Live” cast members required to bring back their old characters if they return to host the show? – Todd Seeland, Buffalo, N.Y.

A: We wouldn’t call it a requirement, but it makes sense in a number of ways for that to happen. Since “SNL” generally is the vehicle that made the given personalities into stars in the first place, it’s logical that in going back to the show. they’d step back into roles that were popular during their original tenures (as Molly Shannon did in her “SNL” return in April). Also, there can be fun for the performers (and, they hope, viewers) in updating their alter egos to match current times. In some cases, the related sketches originally were done 10 to 20 years ago, so present-day subjects can be tackled in a new way by the ever-topical “SNL” when seen through the prism of classic and familiar characters.

‘All About Eve’ still is all about brilliance

Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz has more than a casual connection to the famous 1950 drama “All About Eve”: It was written and directed by his great-uncle, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who earned Oscars for performing both tasks on the film. TCM shows the picture Sunday, May 7, and it’s always a guessing game whether Ben will invoke personal history in his surrounding segments under such circumstances.

The picture is the legendary backstage story of an ambitious newcomer (Anne Baxter) who takes advantage of a star (Bette Davis) whose career is on the downslide. Indeed, as said in it, it’s “going to be a bumpy night.” The superb cast also includes George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe and Thelma Ritter.

A culinary pioneer talks shop, shares war stories in ‘Out of the Oven’

If the musings of one of the world’s most influential chefs is of interest, a new newsletter on Substack may be what you seek.

In “Out of the Oven” (jeremiahtower.substack.com), Jeremiah Tower, who established his reputation as a culinary innovator with his 1970s stint as executive chef at Alice Waters’ legendary Berkeley, Calif., bistro Chez Panisse, offers up a weekly selection from his considerable personal archives, among them his writings, photos, videos, menus and other visual materials on eating, cooking and travel. And there are stories, lots of stories.

This, after all, is a man who lived the life of a celebrity chef before there was such a thing. Recognized worldwide for his innovative approach to Northern California cuisine, Tower left Chez Panisse to open his own San Francisco eatery Stars in the 1980s. Along the way, he plated meals for everyone from the rich and famous to local fishermen and by his own admission was an enthusiastic participant in the drug culture that permeated the industry and helped fuel his own creativity.

In all, there is about a terabyte’s worth of information to share and there are paid and free subscriptions. So whether you’re a foodie or just a lover of entertaining stories, “Out of the Oven” might be worth checking out.

“Andrew Zimmern’s Spilled Milk” (andrewzimmern.substack.com): The “Bizarre Foods” host and four-time James Beard Award-winning chef started this newsletter in December 2021 with the idea of connecting more personally with his community, which he does here through online conversation, recipes, videos and other content. The subscription is free though there is an option to pay.

“Longer Tables With Jose Andres” (joseandres.substack.com): In today’s divided climate, the Spanish-American chef, restaurateur, author and World Central Kitchen founder wants to bring people together. So in this newsletter, he shares stories that show how food connects us and explores our shared food history and food future. He also answers cooking questions, posts interviews with his foodie heroes and shares video postcards from his travels. Subscriptions range from free to $150 annually.

“Ruth Reichl: La Briffe” (ruthreichl.substack.com): For many years, Reichl was a food critic for The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times and she misses her readers. So she created this free newsletter “about cooking, eating and making life more delicious” to reconnect with them.
