Fremin’s Food & Furniture Much more than simply ‘food and furniture’ The sign on the front of the building says, “Food and Furniture,” but Fremin’s has become so much more. This local business has become a one-stop shopping experience. From the front room of a small shotgun house to a 50,000 square foot building, Fremin’s Food and Furniture has grown from a general merchandise store to a full service grocery and furniture business thatis still growing. Fremin’s was founded by Wilton Fremin in 1941. Now 66 years later this business is still family-owned and is operated by members of the third and fourth generations. The reason for this success: Fremin’s Food and Furniture continues to provide quality products with unsurpassed service to loyal customers. Fremin’s Furniture Department offers name brand products such as Ashley, Pulaski, Serta, Aico, Peoplelounger, Livingston, Bedding along with many others. Fremin’s Furniture also boasts about having the largest selection of Howard Miller and Ridgeway Grandfather clocks in

Acadiana. “The furniture department has had a huge increase over last couple of years,” David Fremin said, “due to our expanded floor space and the great finance options that we are able to offer.” This expansion has allowed Fremin’s to increase the number of lines they carry. Fremin’s Rental Department offers the largest selection of tents in the area with sizes ranging from 200 to 4,000 square feet. They supply all of your

party rental needs, such as tables and chairs, lights, dance floors and table coverings, and stage, whether it be disposable or, for more upscale events, linen. With the most professional and experienced crew, you are sure to find everything that is needed for any event from a backyard barbecue to a formal wedding to a corporate crawfish boil. Fremin’s also offers banners and signs for birthdays, sporting events, congratulations, anniversaries, welcome, thanks and holidays. The grocery department

has also expanded over the last several years. The store carries a large selection of Dollar Merchandise, Quality Cookware, Cast Iron Pots, Burners and Boiling Pots. Spice up your foods with our Fremin’s “Magic Dust Cajun Seasoning.” The meat department specializes in fresh cut meats and goes beyond most grocers, to offer specialty Cajun-seasoned meats and fresh sausages, offering its own homemade Fremin’s “Magic Dust” Cajun Hamburgers, boudin and cracklins, marinated

seasoned steaks and more. The expanded deli/bakery has enough space and equipment to can cook for a small army, offering “Krispy Krunchy” fried foods and Fremin’s own homestyle cooked meals and plate lunches daily where you can dine-in or pick up to go. An area leader in unique products, Fremin’s offers its very own “King Kakes,” Cajun Ribbles Bar-B-Q Ribs, fried turkeys, bread pudding, cajun marinated cooked briskets to name a few. Looking for accessories? Visit “Natmania” located next door, owned and operated by Natilie Fremin, where you’ll find a variety of purses and jewelry. Fremin’s also offers income tax services, check cashing, money orders, Western Union, phone cards, ATM. “We have continued to grow because of our faithful customers, and our desire to fulfill their needs,” said David Fremin. “To us, our customers are like family. We love our customers and will continue to do everything we can to serve them.”

Founders Jim Swain and Brady Como have expanded the New Iberia facility by adding 22,000 square feet allowing for 136 new units, to the first and finest indoor, climate-controlled storage facility in New Iberia Swain and Como were the founders and developers 12 years ago. Paulette Hoeber manages both the facilities in New Iberia and Lafayette/Broussard. Rose Jolet, Theresa Provost, Elaine Malagarie and Stephanie Zachary all serve as assistant managers. The staff and owners take pride in our neat, affordable storage facility. Clima Secur’s tenants know that their belongings will be safe in the clean, neat and attractive facility that has such amenities as extra insulation, wide driveways, security cameras, motion sensors, sealed and finished floors, sensored lighting, an air conditioning and heating system that dehumidifies the air, a telephone system the manager on duty can access anywhere on the premises and a comput-

erized invoice system. Security at the facility is enhanced with an alarm system. Operating hours were carefully chosen to ensure the safest environment for tenants and their belongings. With its enormous success, the business doubled in size within two years, adding improvements such as background music, an intercom system and an additional loading area. A second location on Evangeline Thruway between Southpark and Verot School Road in the Lafayette/Broussard area opened in February 2000. Units are available from small closet size to as large as 10 feet by 30-plus feet. There are a number of reasons people choose Clima Secur. Himel Motor Supply Best parts in the business Himel Motor Supply, an independently owned NAPA dealer, got its start in 1918, when Herman Himel opened an auto parts store in the Covington area. Since then, Himel has opened stores all over Louisiana, at one time having more than 33 locations. The primary store is now in New Iberia, with Himel’s grandson, Kent, as the coowner. His father runs Himel Marine and oversees everything. Although NAPA is the distributor, Himel is an independent, locally owned business. “All the other auto parts stores are company

owned,” Kent Himel said. “NAPA has its own stores as well, but only about 20 percent are company owned, while 80 percent are independently owned.” Himel takes pride in the fact that they are locally owned and community minded. They pride themselves on customer service and providing the best parts in the business at competitive prices. Himel Motor Supply sells virtually all operating parts of a vehicle, including additives like radiator stop-leak and oil additives that improve gas mileage. “We stock primarily anything that makes a car

run,” Kent Himel said. “We have other items as well, like a line of commercial pressure washers and steam cleaners. We also tie in the marine end of it, with Himel Marine, where we offer parts and accessories for boats, motors and trailers.” If they don’t have it in stock, they can have it shipped overnight from any of NAPA’s 48 distribution centers. Manager Sandra Haycock and assistant manager Jeff Landry, who has 30-plus years of experience, are ready and willing to offer advice and answer any of their customers’ questions.

DeRouen’s Cleaners Keeping residents looking their best Founded in 1937 by Carroll “Chookie” DeRouen and Rand Broussard, DeRouen’s Cleaners is a third-generation family-owned business. Chookie was 19 when he went into business with Rand. When World War II slowed things down, the two joined the National Guard in 1940. A coin toss decided that Chookie would stay behind to run the business while Rand went war until his return in 1941. Just after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Chookie enlisted in the U.S. Navy and allowed Rand to stay behind. However, Rand would be called to duty soon after, leaving the business closed until January 1946. Today, the business has expanded to not only one, but two locations. There are 16 people on staff. DeRouen’s Cleaners takes pride in the little things, such as making sure to get the spot out of Mrs. Smith’s dress or getting Mr. Jones’ suit ready on time when everyone else said they couldn’t. The owners’ ties are in New Iberia and their goal remains to be considered as businesspeople who will do anything they can to make sure each customer who walks through the door is satisfied.

Lagniappe Motors Quality automotive sales for 32 years Gilman Richard started Lagniappe Motors 32 years ago on a grassy lot on the corner of St. Peter and Jefferson Terrace. It was then known as Gilman Richard Auto Sales, Inc. There was a small metal building for an office and a tarp stretched out from the side of the office for a mechanic shop. Five years later, Gilman built a mechanic shop and office. The present owner, Robert Richard, started hanging around his dad’s lot when he was eight years old. By the time he was 10, he was driving a pickup emptying the garbage. The business was located there for nine years before moving to it’s present location at 1302 Center St. This location has a larger lot and a large mechanic shop. Ten years ago, Gilman changed the name to Lagniappe Motors of New Iberia, and Robert took over managing the business. After Gilman’s death in 2001, Robert purchased the business and is now the owner. The shop is managed by Foster Antoine, a certified mechanic. Detail man and all-around helper is Robert Reedom, who has been with the business for 15 years. The office is capably managed by Cherie Segura, salesmen are Mike Biglane and Mike Bordelon----, and Nancy Richard does reports and title work. Lagniappe Motors buys and sells good, clean used cars. It has also expanded to rent to own, which is an easier way for people to buy cars. Your job and your down payment is your credit. We have no credit checks. Having a mechanic shop on the premises is a big help to take care of any problems the customer may have after the sale. “We go out of our way to help our customers,” Robert says. “We sell and rent-to-own good clean used cars at a reasonable price, and we also buy clean used cars. We think of our customers as family.”

AAA Home Health was started in 1991, with the #1 goal of giving the best patient care possibleto the patients. This is still our goal and we are very proud to say that because of the many employees who have passed through the doors of AAA this goal has ben accomplished. AAA Home health has been in business for 17 years and is one of the few agencies that has remained under the same management and ownership. AAA Hospice was opened in April 2005 because AAA Home Health wanted to be able to continue to care for patients who were in the last few months of their lives. Both are owned by Ann Sonnier, RN, who feels that as a nurse/owner she and her staff will promise that their patients will always come first.

Clima Secur Storage was the first climate-controlled storage facility in New Iberia.

Clima Secur Storage Storing your belongings is no sweat here Clima Secur Storage is celebrating its 12th anniversary this year.

Fremin’s Food & Furniture Much more than simply ‘food and furniture’ The sign on the front of the building says, “Food and Furniture,” but Fremin’s has become so much more.
