Comparing people between the two places, she said in Tulsa “You meet people and it’s ‘hi’ and ‘bye.’ Here, anybody can strike up a conversation. Even on vacation with her family, she said “you always want to come home.” “I think mostly it’s culturally different,” said Scott Foster, who lives in Lafayette but works on New Iberia’s sewer lines during the week. “Up north they’re very outwardly friendly, but personally distant. tough but fair and challenging layout highlights the three ninehole courses that make up Squirrel Run Golf Club, according to Paul Theriot, who is the director of golf at the club. “It’s a championship layout,” said Theriot, originally from Delcambre, who has been at the club for the past two years. “If you look at the yardage, it doesn’t overall give a 73, 7400 yard tell-tale sign. There are some long holes and some short holes. “There are some holes that are 300, 350

Once you’re on the green, you could easily three putt. I’ve seen guys be 15 feet from the hole and if the greens are fast, I’ve seen them four putt. It’s that difficult.” BILL SMITH / THE DAILY IBERIAN

FAIR: Hit the ball well, and score well FROM PAGE 4

That type of play from the course is one of the reasons that Squirrel Run was selected be readers of The Daily Iberian as the Best Golf Course in the Teche Area. The Daily Iberian’s Best of the Teche contest is an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. Separated into three distinct nine-hole courses, Squirrel Run, which opened in 1986, offers top quality golf at non-top quality prices. “You can score on this course,” said Theriot. “But it can also come up to bite you. If you hit the ball well, you are going to score well.” The three courses have their own names and personalities. Steeple (3,211 yards, par 36) was named because on several holes you can see a church steeple in the background, Woods (3,240, par 36) was named because it is built through solid wood forest and had to be carved out and Plantation (3169, par 36) got its name because the land it was built on was originally part of Darby Plantation grounds.

THE DAILY IBERIAN

“THANKS”

“It gives us three combinations of 18 holes so there is a lot of variety,” said Theriot. “There’s a different ninth hole and a different 18th hole each round. It offers a lot of variety instead on playing the same 18 holes over and over.” That’s one of the reasons that the course has hosted Monday qualifying for the annual Chitimacha Louisiana Open golf tournament, for the past several years. “Having three courses also gives us options,” said Theriot. “The members of the club get their chance to play but we can still have guests come and play. Theriot explained that there are about 35,000 rounds of golf a year played at Squirrel Run, which is a semi-private course that allows public daily fee play. While Theriot encourages all to make a tee time about two days in advance, it is possible to just show up one morning or afternoon and he can get you on the course with about 30 minutes notice. “We offer great value for the price,” Theriot said. “The product is as good as any course in the area. The greens are some of the smoothest and fastest ... You get more bang for your dollar.”

Between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 3:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, about 25 employees serve patrons feasts of boiled, fried and grilled seafood. “We try to serve the best,”Alex Romero, manager and owner of The Boiling Point, said. “We have the best seafood in the area, and the readers of The Daily Iberian also thinks so. We have fresh seafood and good quality control.” Romero said customers usually come back after they visit The Boiling Point. “We never had a bad order come back,” he said. “Using fresh seafood and listening to customer input also makes the business really successful.”

James Burton, 29, of New Iberia said he and his family eat at the restaurant all the time. “I really can see why they were voted the Best of the Teche,” Burotn said. “The food is good, and the customer service is also really good too. My favorite here is the boiled seafood because it always tastes good and spicy.” His wife, Tracy, agreed. “The boiled shrimp is really good,” she said smiling. “I also like the crawfish here, too.”

“It’s just like a friendly pharmacy,” said Joan Edgar, a regular patron. “You don’t feel pressured. njoying traveling just makes the job more rewarding when you make a living helping others plan the perfect trip. Mindy Early of Let’s Travel was recently voted the “best travel agent” in the Teche area. “I appreciate all of the votes and trust, and I’m very humbled,” she said. The Daily Iberian’s annual Best of the Teche poll is an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, business and things in the Teche Area. Early has been in the business years 29 years, 17 of which have been with Let’s Travel. She said she started working in the industry after high school and never left. “It’s interesting and exciting to help someone get the best deal and save them money,” she said. “Especially in today’s economy, it’s a challenge.” Early said some of her clients’ more popular destinations include Disneyworld, Las Vegas, cruises and the

Jetting off to Europe is a close second she said, but one destination she would like to visit and would like to see more of her clients take an interest in is Quebec City in Canada. “It gives the feel of being in Europe but is still on the North American continent,” she said. “It’s so historical and architecturally ancient.” Coworkers agree in the choice The Daily Iberian readers made for their favorite travel agent. “She’s very pleasant and extremely vivacious,” Joann Segura, one of Early’s co-workers said. “Her clients love her dearly, and she’ll find the best price for what they want. She’s been doing it for years and years.” Early said she really doesn’t have a secret to her success, but said she is ready and willing to work hard for people and loves what she does. Joseph is a daily presence at the day care and takes the quality of her staff seriously. “I hire only top of the line, quality and loving people and I look for a big heart as the number one requirement,” she said. Huval said evidence of Joseph’s quality management, dedication to her staff and willingness to pay them what they are worth can be seen in the many long-term employees at the day care, including one who has been on staff for 20 years. Huval said the day care provides a lot of love and patience to the younger groups, a

computer lab and language lessons to the pre-kindergarten groups and dance lessons for those children whose parents can’t get them to lessons at other locations. Becky Musemeche’s two children, Kelton, 6, and Kylie, 5, have attended Cathy’s Day Care for several years. Musemeche said the staff at Cathy’s treats parents with a great deal of compassion and trust and love the children that attend much like an extended family. “Everyone there is very much focused on the well-being of your child,” she said. “They take care of my child just like I would. I would highly recommend this daycare to everyone with children.” With a staff of 16 full-time and two part-time employees, Joseph said in 1978, when she opened her day care as a new parent, she had a hard time trusting anyone with her child. Perhaps, part of Joseph’s success and longevity is due to her ability to relate to parents when they communicate their fears about leaving their children in daycare and her guarantee their child are in a patient and loving place.

Montegut describes his poboys as “typical.” “It’s like a hoagie someplace else, but the difference is the poboy is always on French bread,” Montegut said. “We overstuff our poboys, and that’s probably what separates us from the others. “You can have anything on your poboy. We can do seafood, roast beef, ham, oysters or shrimp. Shrimp is the number one seller by far.” Bon Creole started out serving lunch Monday through Friday. “Business just grew, and we’ve gradually added days, nights and weekends, and my daughter Renee runs our Sunday barbecue, which has been very good for us,” Montegut said. “We also do a good gumbo.” Bon Creole is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has its barbecue only on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

andy Montegut is proud of his PoBoys. “I’m glad the customer appreciates what we offer them,” Montegut said about winning the Best Poboy award for the 2008 Best of the Teche. Montegut said that they’ve won the Best PoBoy award as long as the contest has been run. Duffy’s won this year’s award for second best PoBoy. The Daily Iberian’s Best of the Teche poll is an unscientific survey in which readers cast their votes for their favorite people, places, businesses and things in the Teche Area. Montegut and his wife Julie are the owners and operators of Bon Creole, located at 1409 E. St. Peter St. in New Iberia. The Monteguts opened Bon Creole as a restaurant in 1996, and used the same building between 1982 and 1994 for processing crawfish and other seafood. The PoBoys at Bon Creole are sandwiches on French bread and can have any number of items on them.

Boutte attributes her success both to prayer and to dedication to her customers, who also voted the business Best Child’s Haircut and second in Best Women’s Hair Cut behind Hair U Wear. “Customers come first, and here at Sassy Cuts we put their needs first,” Boutte said. “We pride ourselves on healthy, soft flowing hair and we make sure our men’s haircuts are done with great precision.” Boutte said that she has long been motivated by a desire for excellence at her craft. “I’ve always strived to be the best,” she said. As Sassy Cuts’ lead barber and stylist, Boutte is assisted by Beth Bergeron, Shawnetta Olivier and Cyntrelle Allen. Bergeron has worked as an assistant at Sassy Cuts for the past year. “It’s a nice place to work,” Bergeron said. “Everybody’s outgoing.”

gain the trust of the parents and we do that simply by loving our jobs and the parents come to appreciate that care.” Cathy’s Day Care was recently awarded a second quality star from the state of Louisiana. Peggy Huval, assistant director of the daycare, said two quality stars have only been achieved by four day cares in the state and Cathy’s is the only one regionally to boast the high rating.

Wesley, who received his dog-grooming certification at a school in Dallas, said he offers only full-service for mostly small dogs, which includes wash, dip, nails, glands, ears, haircut and decoration. He is open from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday-Friday, and said he prefers to groom one dog per hour (six per day), but can fit in up to 10 if necessary. Wesley has experience in competition grooming, which he said helped him learn top grooming standards for different breeds. “The real practice came when I opened my business,” he said. “I get a chance to use all my skills.” His interest in pet grooming began in Port Arthur, Texas, when he was employed by the National Weather Service. He started a small dog-grooming business there, but only offered washing and flea dipping. “I noticed lots of dogs there (in Port Arthur), but no groomer,” said Wesley. “That’s what gave me the idea.” Leshia Mercier of Cade, a regular customer of Wesley’s, said she has been using his services for her Sheltie, Reeses, for about seven years. “He provides great service for my dog,” she said. “He always fits me in, no matter how busy he is. He really gives my dog the works.” Though he is an avid animal lover, Wesley admitted he has not owned pets of his own since his two collies died a few

Those ties, and her friendly personality, are among the things that Segura said help her to be a successful real estate agent. “I’m very active in the Catholic High community,” said Segura. “And my oldest son transferred to Senior High so I’ve been active in that community too. “I’ve been very fortunate that my family and friends have been loyal to me (when looking to buy or sell homes). A lot of agents tell me their friends and family aren’t always loyal.”

njoying traveling just makes the job more rewarding when you make a living helping others plan the perfect trip.

Caribbean. She said the most memorable trip she planned was for a honeymoon to Australia. She said the sky was the limit for the clients and it was a very personalized

You can just go in to look and not buy anything.” With flexible payment options, many special occasions are marked with jewelry selected with the help of the small, familiar staff. “There have been so many stories,” said Eric Armentor, owner of Armentor’s Jewelers. “But the most rewarding aspect is getting to work with people and share in their genuine happiness.” Both Mike and Eric Armentor said they feel there is a sense of individuality in their business, at this point many of their customers are the third and fourth generation members of families that have been coming for years. “We’re unique,” said Eric Armentor. “We have people come in and tell us stories of how my father used to let them pay five dollars a month over time.”

You get more bang for your dollar.”

tough but fair and challenging layout highlights the three ninehole courses that make up Squirrel Run Golf Club, according to Paul Theriot, who is the director of golf at the club. “It’s a championship layout,” said Theriot, originally from Delcambre, who has been at the club for the past two years. “If you look at the yardage, it doesn’t overall give a 73, 7400 yard tell-tale sign. There are some long holes and some short holes. “There are some holes that are 300, 350

she says “I’ve been here all my life. I’m going to stay ... can’t leave home.” Jaselyn Jeanlouis of Loreauville is going to school in Tulsa. Here, it’s more genuine and warm. “If they say come in and have a cup of coffee, come in and have a cup of coffee.”
