It has always felt like fall goes by way too quickly. The crisp sunny days and cool evenings can’t last long enough for me. Time spent along a warm campfire or backyard firepit with family and friends is a seasonal favorite.

Outdoor activities like apple picking, leaf peeping, and harvest festivals abound in Pennsylvania. You’ll find many of those activities within the pages of this issue.

Fall is a great time to visit one (or even two) historical sites found throughout the Commonwealth. Our rich railroad history can be experienced at several locations in Pennsylvania, and this is an excellent time of year to plan a trip. Some of the historic railroads in PA offer fall foliage train rides. But don’t wait to book until the leaves begin to display their brilliant hues. They fill up fast!

Plan some getaways. Turn a festival into a long weekend away and discover all the area has to offer. But don’t wait to start planning because fall will be gone before you know it.

Since 1923, the Forest Service has been restoring and caring for the Allegheny National Forest (ANF), creating the perfect venue for your year-round outdoor adventures, with outstanding opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, riding ATVs, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, horseback riding, hunting, boating, fishing, and camping. Plus, relaxing in nature, wildlife watching, backpacking, outdoor learning and immersing yourself in history. Enjoy the scenic vistas, rejuvenate your spirit, or simply take a drive through the woods. There is something for everyone in Pennsylvania’s only national forest. Just one hundred years ago, the 514,183 acres that became Allegheny National Forest were by and large a desolate, wildfire-ravaged landscape. Timber harvesting, the oil boom, and the subsequent railroad logging era had stripped the mountains of their trees, leaving not much more than a brush patch and streams choked with

mud. Gifford Pinchot, the Father of American Forestry, and other conservation pioneers had the vision to restore our Nations’ forests for the benefit of future generations. The Weeks Act of 1911 empowered the nascent US Forest Service to protect watersheds and produce timber by purchasing forested, cutover, or denuded lands. The headwaters of the Allegheny River was

chosen to become a national forest. The first parcel of land totaling 32,000 acres was approved for purchase in 1922, setting the stage for President Calvin Coolidge to establish the Allegheny National Forest on September 24, 1923. There was much work to be done, especially if the Forest were to realize the potential identified by L.L. Bishop, the first forest supervisor.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program brought the ingenuity and muscle to get forest restoration work moving forward. The CCC enlisted single men aged 18 to 25 to work on improving America’s public lands. The second CCC camp in the Nation was established in the Allegheny National Forest. The Forest hosted 16 CCC camps from 1933 – 1942. The CCC boys’ legacy of recreation areas, buildings, roads, trails, erosion control, and reforestation work is evident throughout the forest. They are among the twelve points of interest related to their enduring work that await your discovery using the National Forest Explorer app.

Over decades, forest service scientists investigated methods to overcome ecological problems. They collaborated with foresters to implement plans that have resulted in the resilient secondgrowth forest that has reclaimed the once-scarred mountainsides. Forest Supervisor Bishop’s words in 1925 were prophetic, “With the further extension of the highway systems and the completion of the Allegheny purchase program, thousands will annually seek the region for pleasant and wholesome out-of-door recreation.”

That is indeed what came to pass. Each year hundreds of thousands of people pursue their happiness through the outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities available to them in the reforested northwestern corner of Pennsylvania.

The 100th anniversary is the perfect time to immerse yourself in the diverse history and revel in the conservation success story that is Allegheny National Forest. To mark the centennial, two special trail activities have been created to assist visitors in exploring the ANF.

Centennial Hiking Challenge- Hike 100 Miles to Commemorate 100 Years

Hike one hundred miles of the best and most beautiful trails in the Allegheny National Forest in honor of the ANF Centennial. Begin your challenge by downloading your trail log from www.fs.usda.gov/detail/allegheny/ learning/history-culture. Choosing from the trails listed on the website is recommended, but you can select others from within the ANF, making sure they add up to one hundred miles. Remember to mark the date, trail name, and miles hiked on your log on your journey. When you complete one hundred miles, bring your hiking log to one of the ranger stations in Bradford, Marienville, Warren, or the ANF Visitors Bureau in Bradford to receive your commemorative camping mug and wooden coaster while supplies last.

The Allegheny National Forest is the perfect venue for your year-round outdoor adventures.

American public to the outdoors, encourage families to explore the national forest and provide educational and recreational opportunities for trail users. If you are new to geocaching, it is like hunting for buried treasure, except you are using a GPS unit, clues found online, and the target is a variety of items or codes contained within the hidden cache. For this geocache, you will be retrieving a specific code. The first step in enjoying this trail is to register on www.geocaching. com. Once registered, participants can retrieve the coordinates and other location information. The next step is to pick up your passport from the ranger stations or download it from www. pennsoil.org. Then follow the instructions to be eligible for an ANF Centennial Souvenir Token trackable on geocaching.com.

Centennial Celebration at Twin Lakes Recreation Area

The ANF Centennial Celebration will be September 14, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Twin Lakes Recreation Area within the Allegheny National Forest close to Wilcox, PA. A full day of fun and educational activities planned include guided nature hikes, interpretive displays on research and conservation work currently underway in the Forest, live music, swimming, children’s activities, and face painting. Food and beverage vendors and local business vendors will be onsite. A celebratory cake and a live musical performance will complete the celebration. Admission is free. Overnight stays may be reserved at the Twin Lakes Recreation Area campground.

What is Goose Day, you ask? I must admit that I had never heard about the holiday before I worked in Pennsylvania tourism. Like Groundhog Day, the observance has its roots in traditions brought here by settlers who came to America from other countries. Groundhog Day is an offshoot of the German Candlemas Day, a celebration of the upcoming spring planting season. In contrast, Goose Day is based on the English holiday of St. Michaelmas, which celebrates the harvest. Goose Day is observed almost exclusively in and around the Juniata River Valley.

It all began in 1786 when Andrew Pontius was traveling to Lancaster County to hire a tenant farmer to help on his successful farm. Upon stopping in Harrisburg for the night, Pontius met an Englishman named Archibald Hunter, who jumped ship while the British eet docked in hiladelphia to start a new life in America. Pontius was so impressed with the man that he offered him the job. Hunter accepted and signed a contract stating that accounts would be settled annually on the traditional day to do so, September 29. On that day, Hunter appeared at Pontius’ door with his payment and a goose. Hunter explained that in England, it was customary to settle charges on September 29, St. Michaelmas Day, which included gifting a goose. The English believed eating a goose on

September 29 would bring good luck.

Fast forward to 2023, and Goose Day is still going strong in the Juniata River Valley, though I don’t believe debts are settled with a goose in tow. Special events are scheduled throughout the area each year, but 2023 is an exceptional year to plan a trip to participate in the merry making. Not only does Goose Day fall on the weekend, but Penn State has an away game on Saturday, meaning there will be plenty of lodging for everyone.

The full list of Goose Day events will be announced during Lewistown’s First Friday on September 1. Last year’s list was 18 pages long! While the events are planned with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek, the Goose is recognized year-round in Lewistown. More

Goose dinners are available at restaurants throughout the area on September 29, so don’t miss out on your chance to increase your luck. Wineries, breweries, and distilleries will also celebrate the occasion with special themed drinks. Brookmere Winery will be hosting a special Goose Day Happy Hour on Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Thursday, Sept. 28: Discover the Juniata River Valley’s pristine outdoor adventures. isit Stone Mountain Hawk Watch in llensville, located along the Mif in/Huntingdon

County border. The overlook is located within the Rothrock State Forest. With an eye to the sky, visitors often see broad-winged hawks, bald eagles,

osprey, and other raptors. The Broadwinged Hawk migration begins in Mid-September, so chances of witnessing the soaring birds are pretty good. Perhaps the most beautiful sight is the panoramic view of the valley below.

From the parking area to the overlook, visitors will follow the orange blazed Standing Stone Trail for approximately a third of a mile. The trail is rocky but not e ceptionally difficult for most hikers.

The Juniata River Valley is also known for great fishing and oating on the Juniata River. This 100-milelong river has many Class fishing streams in its expansive watershed. Whether you prefer traditional fishing or y fishing, the staff at the visitor’s bureau can help you pick a great spot.

Every year, event organizers decide on a theme. Last year they settled on a theme in honor of the release of the movie “Top Gun.” Fun photo opportunities can be found throughout the event, like this “Friends” set from 2020.

Must-See Historic Sites Outside Philadelphia. 3

When you think of historical sites in southeastern Pennsylvania, places like Independence Hall, the Betsy Ross House, and the Liberty Bell come to mind. But there are historical locations outside Philadelphia that are undoubtedly worth visiting. Here are three of my favorites.

Pennsbury Manor

Pennsbury Manor was the 1683 country home of William Penn. Situated along the Delaware River, his 43-acre estate was built to give Penn the quiet country life he desired for his family. After converting to the Quaker faith he was ostracized and imprisoned for blasphemy, while in England. Because of his father’s heroism and favor with King Charles II, Penn

approached the king about setting up a colony in America where settlers had religious freedom. Because of the debt owed by the Crown to his father, Penn was granted a substantial amount of land in 1681, making him the sole owner of the largest colony in America. It was called Pennsylvania, meaning “Penn’s Woods.” Though he only spent a total of four years in Pennsylvania, his impact is still felt today. Before returning to England in 1701, Penn wrote the Charter of Privileges, which set up a new government for the colony. The Charter promoted ideas such as a representative government and the elimination of nobility; it emphasized the separation of Church and state and gave much of the power to the people of Pennsylvania. The drafters of our Constitution used the same structure of government that Penn created.

Today, guests experience life as it was 300 years ago at the recreated 17th-century estate.

Besides special events and workshops held throughout the year, guided tours are available Wednesday through Saturday and last approximately 90 minutes. The tour includes entrance to the exhibit, “William Penn: Seed of a Nation,” an orientation video, and a tour of the grounds.

John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove

Whether you are a bird watcher, a lover of nature, or have an appreciation for fine art, visiting the home of John James Audubon (17851851) should be on your bucket list. Audubon’s “Birds of America,” printed between 1827 and 1838, was the culmination of his life’s goal of painting every bird in orth merica. He filled his book with 435 lifesized watercolors of North American birds.

Today, you can visit Audubon’s Pennsylvania home in Montgomery County. On the docent-led tours of the stone farm house, you will see artifacts and some of Audubon’s original paintings.

The museum at the John James Audubon Cen ter is a spectacular experi ence for visitors of all ages.

In the “Drawn from Nature Gallery,” guests will see the process of Audubon’s work, from his explorations in nature to the final product, Birds of America.”

The interactive exhibit, W W Birds invites visi tors to get “banded” and find out what type of bird you are. Stations in the gal lery will teach about your habitat, nest, and more.

while the gallery’s light-up yway map teaches guests about the migration patterns of various birds.

Younger museumgoers enjoy the Fledgling Trail, where they can build their own nest and learn about birds from egg to ight. he trail also includes a sensory garden, a playground zipline, and the Discovery Tree Climb, where children can slide out of the nest and learn how to find food.

The 200-acre Mill Grove Estate includes five miles of marked nature trails along Perkiomen Creek, which is open from dawn to dusk for anyone to enjoy. Don’t forget your binoculars. More than 175 species of birds visit the property regularly. You’ll find trail maps at the front desk of the center. Dogs are not permitted.

Hopewell Forge National Historic Site

Hopewell Forge is one of several historic sites in Pennsylvania run by the National Park Service. The site is an excellent example of the beginnings of American industrialization. Hopewell Furnace was an active iron plantation from 1771 to 1883. Cast iron stoves, pig iron, and other iron products were manufactured at Hopewell. Because of its rural location, the plantation had to be nearly selfsufficient. he buildings on the property’s 848 acres tell the history of life on an iron plantation. Today visitors will see the Ironmaster’s mansion, the blacksmith shop, tenant buildings, the company store, the charcoal house, and most importantly, the cast house where the molten iron was poured into molds.

No restaurant facilities are on site, but families are encouraged to bring a picnic and eat at the tables beside the upper parking lot or in other areas on the grounds, like the 150-tree apple orchard. Food is not permitted inside the historic buildings. A visit during September and October assures that there will be apples ready for picking. During the heyday of the iron plantation, apples were an essential part of the annual harvest of crops grown on the property. Records show that in 1788 there were 250 apple trees at Hopewell Furnace.

Hopewell’s apples are managed to preserve the historic nature of the orchard.
