We’re one of the few kids’ arts organizations to teach visual and performing arts in one space, creating a fun, inspiring environment in which young artists thrive. Matthew’s House Abbotsford Matthew’s House is a program of Communitas Supportive Care Society. Communitas is a faith-based, registered charity providing care in communities across British Columbia to those living with disabilities. They provide services ranging from 24-hour residential care, to skillsbased day programs, to respite care for families.
Q&A What are your most popular services? Matthew’s House supports families by providing quality care to children who live with complex care needs. Located in Abbotsford, Matthew’s House provides care for up to five children at a time, in a stateof-the-art residence staffed by experienced caregivers. Children between the ages of 4 and 18 stay from two nights to 14 days or longer. Why did you start this service? Matthew’s House is a result of the vision of Doug and Andrea Froese. Complications during his birth left Matthew completely dependent on others for his care. Despite this, he was deeply loved by family and friends. Doug and Andrea sought to honour this legacy of love by creating a home-away-from-home, where families like theirs could bring their child, knowing that they would be safely and lovingly cared for. Matthew’s House opened its doors in November, 2013. What makes your service special? One of the things that makes Matthew’s House such a special place is the way that we include parents. We recognize that parents are the experts on their child’s care. Parents work together with staff to create a care plan for their child’s stay, ensuring that care is specific to their child’s needs. Parents also spend the first night in our beautiful parent’s room, to help their child adjust to the new environment and to help staff learn from their unique knowledge. What is one thing that you’d like to tell readers about your business? Matthew’s House is funded through a blended partnership between government and private donors. Quality care is costly and Matthew’s House relies on donations from events and generous donations from community groups and individuals.

Under the GUI Academy is a learning centre focused on STEM programs for students in grades 1 to 12. We aim to inspire kids to innovate, think critically, and create, with technologies on the fringe of our hi-tech culture; creating video games, apps, and software using the same tools used by professionals.
Q&A Why did you start this business? I started Under the GUI Academy by accident. My intention after I graduated was to look for a job in a lab or a tech corp., and maybe tutor on the side because I really enjoyed working with kids and being an educator. I tutored in math and science, and after class, I would show off some of the apps and games that I was working on. They were really into it! They asked if I could teach them this on top of their other classes, and so I did! Eventually word got out and I began teaching more and more kids how to code their own apps. Can you share an improvement or something new you’ll be offering in the near future? We find that the biggest pain point for parents is that they worry about their kids missing classes, and trying to catch up if they fall behind. We get it, there’s soccer, birthday parties, and unexpected events that happen all the time. Our goal for this coming year is to explore new ways to provide the content the students may have missed in our classes from week to week, so parents can have the flexibility to schedule other activities during the same timeframe. We’re also expanding our program to include Circuits and Robotics this coming school year and are looking for parents that are interested in piloting with us!
