Encounter With A Bald Eagle by Chris Bosak Contributing Writer

I drove my son to the auto repair shop so he could check on the status of his car. I dropped him off at the garage bay and continued toward a parking spot facing the road. As I approached the spot, I noticed a large bird perched in a leafless tree overlooking the road and the small swamp on the other side. Assuming it was a hawk, I narrowed down the options to red-tailed hawk and red-shouldered hawk. I would have immedi-

ately jumped to red-tailed hawk, but red-shouldered hawks seem to be thriving throughout much of New England. In the brief glance I got of the bird up to this point, I noticed it was rather large, which further confirmed my suspicion that it was a red-tailed hawk. When I finally parked, I discovered it was neither. It was much larger than even a red-tailed hawk. It was a bald eagle, right there along the road by the auto repair shop. I was excited to see the See BOSAK on 21

On Tuesday, November 14th at 7pm, the New Hampton Historical Society presents the program “The Connecticut: New England’s Great River” at the GordonNash Library. The largest river in New England rises in a small beaver pond near the Canadian border and flows over 400 miles through four states, falling 2,670 feet to the sea through America’s only watershed-based national fish and wildlife refuge.

To The Editor: Democracies most often die from slow, incremental erosion of individual liberty through the moral rot of institutions, elites and their lust for power and control, along with the consent of a complacent, unknowing and malleable public. Amos Elon described how this happened with decent and civil German citizens in the years before the Holocaust. I was dismayed and shocked when three and a half years ago, our society so meekly acquiesced to the loud hammer of authority through emergency measures during the era of Covid. School children were forced to submit to experimental gene therapy to play sports and even to visit relatives and engage in social activities with others. The injuries from those shots continues to climb. According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, forcing children to wear a mask all day has now been proven to have harmful effects both to brain development and psychologically. Besides instilling abject fear in the lives of our children, the ineffectual masking of children has resulted in our school-aged youth having impaired ability to acquire language, bond with other children and to be less able to recognize and express emotions. This is but one example of how a government can exact submission from its citizens as happened in Germany in the 1930’s. Yes, citizens were too willing to join the cult-of-Covid,

A Look Inside The Bird Cage

To The Editor: On Saturday morning, October 28th, standing on Littleton’s grassy knoll and holding up a Bible Verse Sign, my eyes caught the advertising poster at the Opera House for La Cage aux Folles across the way. That Irony put a smile on my face at first; I’m standing here proclaiming some of the foundational moral standards of this Town and this once Great Nation, and more significantly proclaiming the pathway to a saving knowledge of the Creator. Then across the street, they are advertising a play, which some try to call “art”, about nothing more than various homosexual behaviors. As that irony sunk in deeper, the smile left my face. For those not in-the-know, La Cage aux Folles is a 1973 French Play about two homosexual men who own a south-of-France coastal nightclub Drag Show

performance venue. This stage performance became a big “hit” in America and subsequently spawned the 1996 movie called The Birdcage with Robin Williams. The French Play and the Movie The Birdcage were viewed as playful mockeries of various homosexual proclivities. The intentions of 42nd street and Hollywood were to cash-in on the downward spiral of Western Christian Society and more importantly to normalize what are euphemistically called “alternative lifestyles”. As a Born Again Christian, I’m ashamed to admit that I too at one time committed the lamentable sin of laughing at seeing homosexual men mocked and satirized. Face it: La Cage aux Folles is as much “art” as a Stormy Daniels hardcore pornographic film is an Oscar winner. Caveat Emptor is the principle that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase. Anyone who purchases a ticket to this performance or who appears in this performance must consider their responsibility to their family (especially their children), their community, and their Creator, of what they are purchasing and thereby endorsing. We know what was on the minds of some of those who brought this performance to Littleton. The Culture War is raging in this little town and those (many of whom are just outsider rabble rousers) who seek to change its values See MAILBOAT on 23

Most of the railroad stations in the state of New Hampshire are no longer operating as such, having been made over for other purposes or having been removed entirely. The train station, in Ashland, New Hampshire, however, has been restored to its former appearance, and at certain times of the year, for short periods of time, is buzzing with activity as train passengers disembark from the train and crowd into the station. On a recent Saturday afternoon I was there to observe the foliage train from the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad make a stop at the Ashland station while on its way from Plymouth to Meredith. The Ashland Historical Society now owns the railroad building in that town and makes it available for visitors at certain times during the year including the stops by the train on its scenic tour run. *A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

It’s In The Bag We have a couple of trees in front of ourhouse that are already bare of leaves. (What kind of trees? Not sure. I guess I could look it up, but by Brendan Smith I don’t have the Weirs Times Editor time right now as I need to finish this column.) As is custom at our house, the leaves need to be raked up and put into bags since we don’t have any room on our property to dump the leaves onto. The bags are then placed by the street where the waste management company will send trucks to take them away. (Coming from New York I can’t help but think of the mob whenever I say the word “Waste management.” Some of you will understand.) Of course, in order to fully accomplish this task, I need to go down to any of the various stores in our neighborhood where I can purchase these leaf and yard waste bags. The point of the bags is that, since they are made of heavyduty paper, they are strong enough to hold the waste and will eventually disintegrate in the landfill or wherever these trucks take them. (I don’t really think too much about where, I am just glad to be rid of them, as with the rest of my trash) These bags are relatively inexpensive and you can buy ten of them (the maximum amount allowed by garbage law to be placed by the street to be picked up) for just a few bucks. I have been following this routine for about fifteen years now and only this year did it finally hit me. Why am I paying for these bags? If you ride through our neighborhood and others, you will see these bags along the road, chock full of leaves and other

yard waste. You will also notice that the name of the business which sold the bags is displayed in big letters on the front. (This printing is on both sides, so no matter which way you place the bag, the name is prominently displayed.) It’s free advertising for the business. So, in reality, they should be paying us to use their bags or, at the very least, give them to us for free. Maybe even throwing in a free rake as incentive to use their bags and advertise their business. For all those years, at my own expense, I have been inadvertently using the front of my house to advertise various local businesses and have not received a penny of compensation in return. I have been paying out of my own pocket to promote them. In fact, the city I live in collects yard waste in these bags four times a year; twice each in the spring and fall. So, once the bags are gone this week, I will just buy more and then advertise the business yet again in a couple of weeks. So, it got me to thinking. Since these bags are prominent here in New Hampshire around this time of year, wouldn’t candidates for public office be smart to give away lawn and leaf bags with their names and what office they are seeking for free to try and drum up some votes? I’d use them. In fact, I may have to consider this idea for my own candidacy for governor next year running on the Flatlander ticket. Of course, candidates could do so much more with this idea than just putting their names on the bags, they could also use them for some clever campaign slogans. How about. “This bag is as bloated as our government. Vote so and so to cut down on “waste”ful spending.” Or: “Don’t you want the gov-

ernment to just “leaf” you alone? Vote for Whatshizname.” Or, for the more liberal minded: “I Promise Free Yard Waste Bags for Life. Vote Whoziwhats.” These could even be used as motivational factors by candidates to get more folks to campaign events. Forcing people to listen to them “blah, blah, blah…” for a half hour as they wait for the payoff of free packs of lawn and leaf bags as they leave. I’m sure this column might upset a few business owners who I realize aren’t making a big profit on these bags that help promote their business, but use them more as loss leaders to get folks into their stores. My suggestion is you could offer customers to have their own personalized lawn and leaf bag messages created just for them so they could put whatever message they want in front of their homes. It could be big business. Maybe even creating some plays on different themes. How about those “In This House We Believe” signs? Folks could make up their own using all ten bags each with a different message spelling out something like: “In This House We Believe That No One Should Ever Have To Pay For Lawn Waste Bags…. and Science Is Real.” You can use your imagination and create whatever message you want. Maybe neighbors could get together and create a “Burma Shave” type message down their street. (Those under forty can google it.) Personalized yard waste bags might even persuade folks who don’t have a need for them to buy personalized ones just to get in on the fun. The list goes on - which is what I write when I have run out of ideas - which I just did. Happy Raking!

We Must Restore ‘Veritas’ At Our Universities

by Star Parker

Syndicated Columnist

According to a survey done by the Harvard Crimson in 2022, 80% of the faculty at Harvard University self-identified as “liberal.” Thirty-seven percent self-identified as “very liberal.” Only 1% self-identified as conservative. This snapshot of the politics of the faculty at the nation’s oldest and leading university is not exceptional. Surveys of most university faculties show them overwhelmingly on the

left. If we think about it, it can help us understand why the president of Harvard, Claudine Gay, had such a hard time making a clear statement condemning the atrocities committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians. And it can help us understand demonstrations by students at Harvard, and other universities, accusing Israel, the victim of these atrocities, as their cause. As one Wall Street Journal columnist put it, one can hardly imagine demonstrations at Harvard against human brutality in China, Iran, North Korea, Russia or Syria. But somehow atrocities against Israelis are not only justified in the eyes of these left-wing university elite but caused by their Israeli victims. What is the sickness of the soul that has captured America’s elite of higher education? To start our inquiry, we must look at Harvard’s founding. John Harvard, who provided the college’s first endowment, was a clergyman. Read the language on Harvard’s seal “Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae.” “Truth for Christ and Church.” How many of Harvard’s administration today, of those teaching at Harvard today, of those learning at Harvard today can identify with these words from the earliest days of their university? I don’t know the exact number, but I think if we guess zero, we’ll be close to the truth. America was founded and built by Christians who sought truth and worked to make a better world. Were there flaws, mistakes? Of course. They were men. But the way to improve is to get closer to the truth, not to throw it in the trash. See PARKER on 28

The Middle The easiest moral place to stand is in the middle. Standing in the middle is comforting. It grants you the illusion that you are being evenhanded, that you see nuance and complexity by Ben Shapiro where others see black Syndicated Columnist and white. It is flattering to be in the middle -- no one hates your viewpoint enough to make you their opponent, and yet you get to stand apart from everyone, tut-tutting both sides. When it comes to Israel and its terrorbacking enemies, the West has, for some decades, taken precisely that position. Sure, Israel should be able to defend itself. But not too much. Yes, Israel has the right to exist. But it must make concessions to those who seek Israel’s destruction. When Israel’s enemies pursue the worst atrocities in four generations, it’s difficult to maintain that position of studied neutrality, in which attacks on Israel are chalked up to political differences and shrugged away. It turns out that scenes of brutally massacred children, women and men tend to upset the moral stomach. But then the stomach settles again. All it takes to return to that sophisticated neutrality is a few false platitudes -- a few comforting lies. Three of those lies have been provided in significant supply by the hard Left and its allies in the legacy media. The first lie is that Israel must be warned not to engage in human rights violations. We hear this nostrum all the time: from the president of the United States, from the United Nations, from the media. The idea is that if Israel’s leadership isn’t reminded in the wake of the worst pogrom since the Holocaust, those rude Jews might carpet-bomb Gaza. The purpose of the lie is simple: to get Israel to stop de-

fending itself at the first available opportunity. If you warn the world that Israel is likely to pursue atrocities, and then -- as inevitably happens in war -- something terrible happens, Israel can quickly be shoved back into the box of moral equivalence. Voila! Status quo ante restored. Of course, this lie is a lie. And it is a stupidly offensive lie, in the same way that it is a lie when the United Nations warns the United States about human rights violations. Israel is a professional military that abides by the rules of war. Its enemies openly cheer the death of civilians, both Israel’s and their own. By all rights, the entire political and media infrastructure ought to be using their supposed moral suasion on human rights to convince Hamas to release hostages and protect their own citizens. But, of course, there’s no real interest in that. The lie must be maintained. Israel has to be warned about human rights, because secretly, the Jews are just like Hamas. Then there’s the second lie: that we must all remember the vaunted Peace Process. Yes, the Peace Process that was obviously and clearly a ruse undertaken by Yasser Arafat in order to provide the jumping-off point for a genocidal war on the Jews; the Peace Process that has ended in the election of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the leadership of Islamic Jihad and the terrorpaying Palestinian Authority in the West bank. We must, the lie goes, remember the two-state solution! Of course, this lie is dangerous, too. It’s dangerous because, once again, it inevitably places the blame on Israel for terrorism against Israel. If only the Jews had made more concessions -- other than, you know, the partition plan of 1947 (rejected by the Arabs); the Egyptian-Israeli peace deal of 1979 (the Arab states boycotted Egypt after Anwar Sadat’s peace with Israel for almost a decade); the Oslo Accords themselves; Ehud Barak’s 2000 Camp David proposal (rejected by Arafat, and a violent terror See SHAPIRO on 27

COVID Deception Remember when Sen. Rand Paul accused Dr. Anthony Fauci of funding China’s Wuhan virus lab Fauci replied, “Sen. Paul, you do not know what by John Stossel you’re talking Syndicated Columnist about.” The media loved it. Vanity Fair smirked, “Fauci Once Again Forced to Basically Call Rand Paul a Sniveling Moron.” But now the magazine has changed its tune, admitting, “In Major Shift, NIH Admits Funding Risky Virus Re-

search in Wuhan ... Paul might have been onto something.” Then what about question two: Did COVID-19 occur because of a leak from that lab? When Paul confronted Fauci, saying, “The evidence is pointing that it came from the lab!” Fauci replied, “I totally resent the lie that you are now propagating.” Was Paul lying? What’s the truth? The media told us COVID came from an animal, possibly a bat. But in my new video, Paul points out there were “reports of 80,000 animals being tested. No animals with it.” Now he’s released a book, “Deception: The Great Covid Cover-Up,”

that charges Fauci and others with funding dangerous research and then covering it up. “Three people in the Wuhan lab got sick with a virus of unknown origin in November of 2019,” says Paul. The Wuhan lab is 1,000 kilometers away from where bats live. Today the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Energy and others agree with Paul. They believe COVID most likely came from a lab. I ask Paul, “COVID came from evil Chinese scientists, in a lab, funded by America?” “America funded it,” he replies, “maybe not done with evil intentions. It was done with the misguided no-

tion that ‘gain of function’ research was safe.” Gain of function research includes making viruses stronger. The purpose is to anticipate what might happen in nature and come up with vaccines in advance. So I push back at Paul, “They’re trying to find ways to stop diseases!” He replies, “Many scientists have now looked at this and said, ‘We’ve been doing this gain of function research for quite a while.’ The likelihood that you create something that creates a vaccine that’s going to help anybody is pretty slim to none.” Paul points out that Fauci supSee STOSSEL on 28

Diplomatic Deadlock Over Gaza; Crisis Widens War clouds are swirling in the Middle East as the region steps closer to the precipice. The Second Stage of Israel’s military offensive against by John J. Metzler Hamas has now Syndicated Columnist begun with all out fighting in the Gaza strip between the terrorists and the State of Israel. But beyond tiny Gaza it appears that regional destabilization now seems a certainty. Amidst the chaos, the Islamic Republic of Iran plays puppet master to terrorist proxies such as Hamas and even more so Hezbollah based in Lebanon on Israel’s northern frontier. And what of a gaggle of Iranian militia forces stoking chaos in Iraq and Ye-

men? Conflict can easily spread from Gaza to the wider region. Naturally the political default setting for Mideast crises and conflicts has traditionally been the United Nations, where the powerful Security Council would weigh in on the crisis through peacemaking efforts to contain the chaos. This no longer seems the case. There’s a dangerous diplomatic dynamic is building in the UN Security Council where more than a decade of political deadlock among the powers is hampering current efforts to help civilians caught in the crossfire from the Gaza war. The U.S. moved to pass a draft resolution; American Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield stated passionately before the vote, “Our resolution unequivocally condemns the

heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas and other terrorist groups. It affirms the right of Member States to defend themselves against the threats to peace and security posed by acts of terrorism. It urges all parties to fully respect and comply with obligations under international law.” The U.S. backed draft resolution equally offered strong humanitarian aid for Gaza’s beleaguered civilians, was unceremoniously shot down by a rare Double Veto of Russia and China. Nonetheless ten countries of the fifteen member Council supported Washington, with three against including veto holding Russia and China and the United Arab Emirates. Brazil abstained. Later the USA and UK reciprocated by blocking a Russian draft resolution which was floated at the

last minute offering humanitarian aid but without condemning Hamas terrorism. Moscow’s delegate later lamented that countries did “not have the strategic wisdom to support the Russian text.” (sic) While the Russian draft was backed by a mere four states, it was stopped cold by the U.S. and UK, both veto wielding members. Yet importantly 9 countries abstained including France, Japan, and Switzerland among others. Three draft resolutions separately sponsored by Brazil, the United States and Russia failed to pass. Since the Syrian conflict in 2012, the fifteen member UN Security Council has been largely paralyzed by a revival of Cold War era type bloc politics and standoffs. The Ukraine war has only worsened the dilemma See METZLER on 27

Motorcyclist badly hurt in Gilford on Wednesday By AdAm drApcho THE LACONIA DAILY SUN

GILFORD — The rising sun appears to have contributed to a collision on Wednesday morning that caused serious injury to a motorcyclist. A male motorcyclist, an Alton resident, was transported to Concord Hospital-Concord after the crash. No other injuries were reported. According to Lt. Adam VanSteensburg of Gilford Police, the motorcyclist was traveling west on Route 11 at around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, when he collided with a work van that had been traveling in the opposite direction on Route 11, and was in the process of turning left onto Lily Pond Road. VanSteensburg said there were four passengers in the van, which was registered in Massachusetts, and none of the van’s occupants were harmed. There were multiple witnesses to the accident, and some witnesses indicated that the low angle of the sun might have made it difficult for the van driver to see the approaching motorcycle. “The motorcyclist looked like he had significant head injuries and leg injuries,” VanSteensburg said. The Belknap Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash. Though it’s still early in the investigation, VanSteensburg said he did not, at that moment, expect criminal charges to be brought against the van driver. Police were able to keep traffic flowing through the intersection during the busy morning commute.

Fall Crappie Fishing by Tim Moore Contributing Writer

•Septic Pumping •Drains Unclogged •Septic Pump Repair & •Septic System Installation Inspections From the Lakes to the Mountains, We Are At Your Service! MOULTONBOROUGH: 476-5557 | MEREDITH: 279-4313 www.lampreyseptic.com

Cooling water temps have triggered crappie and other panfish to move out of the shallows and school up over deep basins in ponds and smaller lakes. For some anglers, myself included, October is one of the most productive months of the year to fish for black crappie. They can be found in large numbers and they’re hungry, sometimes biting all day. Add ultra-light gear to the equation and you’ll not only catch a lot of fish, but you will have a boat load (pun intended) of fun as well. The first task in finding fall crappie is to locate deep basins. This is where lake maps and charts come in handy. In this age of smart phones there are a myriad of lake map apps to choose from. I use the Navionics app; it not only gives very detailed information about the contours of almost any lake or pond, it will also show your location on the chart. No more lining up objects on shorelines to find the honey hole. Just remember to close the app once you get where you are going or the GPS function will drain your battery in about an hour. The term “deep” is relative because basin depths vary from lake to lake. In many cases it simply means the deepest section of a lake or pond. Some water bodies that hold crappie

With his guiding season slowing down, Tim is more than happy to take advantage of some great fishing and even better scenery. have very distinct basins that are 20, 30, and even 40 feet deep; these are usually great places to fish. Once you figure out where the basins are and which one you want to fish, head for the upwind side of it and begin your drift. Kayaks make the ultimate attack vessels because of their stealth and low profile. Being low to the water means they catch less wind and therefore drift more slowly. Electronics, such as a traditional fish finder or a Vexilar sonar flasher, give you a huge leg up when fishing for suspended deep-basin panfish, because they show the depth of the fish in real time. If you

don’t have electronics, don’t worry, you will still catch fish. Luckily, once you figure out where fish are suspended, you will usually catch fish at that same depth until there is another significant change in water temperature or quality. If you ice fish for crappie then you probably already have a lot of the necessary tackle. Small 12mm tungsten jigs with soft plastics, such as the Maki or Jamei from Maki Plastic, work great. The Live Baby Shad by Lake Fork Trophy Lures, Z Man Shad FryZ, and size 3 Salmo Chubby Darter are some of my favorites. Vary your jigging cadence until you find a particular pattern that works well.

Vertical jigging works great, but sometimes casting and letting your lure sink to the bottom is extremely effective, as is dropping your lure about halfway down and drifting without jigging. When choosing a lure color, match the existing light conditions: bright day = bright colors, dark days = dark colors. One of the best things about fall crappie fishing is that it isn’t highly technical and very predictable. If you like crappie fishing then the fall bite is not to be missed. It has already begun and should stay great throughout November. Early morning bites will usually be better with fish often coming one after another. With a little time and effort you can catch a meal’s worth of tasty fillets in no time and still have time left to climb into your tree stand for the afternoon hunt if you wish. Be mindful of your state’s regulations as bag limits and lead bans vary from state to state. As always, be good to the environment and clean up after yourself. Eric Gibson’s daughter Emily, picnicking with her sheep and enjoying some fluffernutters when she was about 7 years old. “Everybody Loves Fluffernutters!”

by Eric N Gibson Contributing Writer

October 8th National Fluffernutter Day. November 11th is Veterans Day. As usual, I am either late or early to the party. A time honored classic combination whose

roots go back over 100 years, the Fluffernutter, is a true representation of American Cultural Cuisine. Two slabs of bread, one spread with peanut butter the other with a creamy mallow “goo”, when gently pressed together, create one of the best flavors since chocolate met peanut butter. What could be better? But where did the idea of the Fluffernutter come from? For that we need to dig a bit, diving into the history of both peanut butter and Fluff. The internet is a willing accomplice when delving

into this sort of research and I have tried to cite my primary sources for your additional perusal. According to the article authored by Kate Wheeling, A Brief History of Peanut Butter for Smithsonian Magazine* peanut butter was the result of research conducted by Dr. J.H. Kellogg of cereal fame, in Battle Creek MI. Kellogg operated a successful sanitarium in the late 1880’s (a health spa of sorts) with a focus on treating medical ailments through his work on diets and proper nutrition. Now, they say that his peanut

paste and that product which we know today as peanut butter, were vastly different in taste and perhaps texture. And anyone who has ever tried coarse ground blanched peanuts can probably attest to this. Enter one Joseph Lambert. Lambert, it is assumed, while working for Kellogg, acquired knowledge on the making of nut butter, (yet to be commercially known as Peanut Butter). Along with patent acquisitions for, and the perfection of, equipment to make nut butter, Lambert was the See FEAST on 22

An Evening With Sarah Josepha Hale

Story and photos by Bob Letourneau Sarah Josepha Hale recently visited the Ashland Historical Society as historical reenactors Steve and Sharon Wood of Claremont presented this fascinating story of the woman who was considered to be America’s first lady editor. Sarah Josepha Buell was born October 24th, 1788 in Newport, New Hampshire, to Captain Gordon Buell, a Revolutionary War veteran, and Martha Whittlesay Buell. Sarah was an American writer, activist and editor of the most circulated magazine prior to the Civil War, Godey’s Lady Book. She also has been credited as the author of the nursery rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb. The program began as Ashland Historic Society Chairman, David Ruell, introduced Sharon and Steve Wood with Sharon as Miss Hale seated at her desk in her Philadelphia home reading her mail.

Sharon Wood recently gave a presentation as Sarah Josepha Hale at the Ashland Historical Society A member of the audience (Ashland’s Rebecca Hartley) read aloud a letter asking Sarah about her 30 plus year effort to have Thanksgiving declared a national holiday. In response, Miss Hale told her story of her attempts to have the national holiday declared

that took place over many presidential administrations. Throughout her time as an editor, Miss Hale had written hundreds of letters to governors, senators, ministers, newspaper editors, and every U.S. president with one request: that

Ashland resident Rebecca Hartley reads a letter to Hale. the last Thursday in November be set aside to “offer to God our tribute of joy and gratitude for the blessings of the year.” According to a Time article: …”her lobbying

effort to make Thanksgiving holiday can be traced back to a passage of her 1827 novel Northwood. ‘We have too few holidays,’ she wrote. “‘Thanksgiving like the Fourth of July should

be a national festival observed by all the people … as an exponent of our republican institutions.’” Finally, Miss Hale’s request caught the attention of President Abraham Lincoln. It was 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring “a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise,” the culmination of a 36-year campaign started by so-called “mother” or “godmother” of Thanksgiving, Sarah Josepha Buell Hale. With the civil war tearing apart the country Lincoln thought this was an excellent way to bring people together. Lincoln asked his Secretary of State, William Henry Seward, to draft a proclamation which he read on October 3rd, 1863, ordering all government offices in Washington closed on that day. It wasn’t until 1939 when President Franklin Roosevelt ordered to move the holiday to the third Thursday in November, but millions of Americans continued to celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday of November. In 1940, FDR realized the error in December 1941, he then assigned the official date of the Holiday to the fourth Thursday in November. Looking at the dates of when the Thanksgiving Holiday was enacted, it would appear that two American Presidents understood the power of coming together during difficult times would bring reflection of life, family, hope and love. The program concluded with an appearance of President Lincoln (Steve Wood) reading his original Thanksgiving proclamation in 1863.

WEIRS TIMES’ BEER FINDER

WNBA Hoops! by Mike Moffett Contributing Writer

Our October 5 “Sport-Thoughts” column began thusly: “When I was a youngster life was so much simpler. Oldtimers will agree. In 1967 there were 63 MLB, NHL, NFL, and NBA franchises. Today there are 124 such teams.” All true. Which brings us to soccer and females. Re: soccer. A tenteam North American Soccer League did begin play in 1967. As a soccer guy, I never said American pro soccer wasn’t big league. Au contraire. I was simply comparing relative numbers of MLB, NHL, NFL, and NBA franchises vis-à-vis 1967 and 2023. Major League Soccer (MLS) currently features 29 North American men’s teams, to include the New England Revolution soccer men who play in Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium. Re: females. In 1967 there were no pro women’s sports leagues—unless one counted golf or tennis. In that pre-Title IX era, there were no NHIAA girls’ tournaments. Thus, there were no girls state championship teams before the seventies. Similarly, there were no NCAA women’s tournaments or champions such as we have today.

Diana Taurasi. Several attempts to create women’s pro soccer leagues in American ended badly. But the latest iteration, the National Women’s Soccer League, has been around for over a decade and features 12 franchises. So women’s pro soccer is alive and kicking. Which brings us to the Women’s National Basketball Association. The WNBA was founded in 1996 with strong ties to the NBA, whose Commissioner David Stern was one of the WNBA’s “fathers.” The WNBA’s had its superstars, dynasties,

and legends—to include Rebecca Lobo, Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Diana Taurasi, and Tamika Catchings. One WNBA legend actually involved Detroit Piston bad boy Bill Laimbeer, of all people. Larry Bird’s bête noire was appointed Detroit Shock head coach in 2003. The team was a last place franchise in 2002 but Laimbeer turned things around and the Shock went from worst to first and defeated Leslie and the two-time champion Los Angeles Sparks

for the title on a last second final playoff game three-pointer by Deanna Nolan. This “league of their own” is not everyone’s cup of tea but it claims many devoted followers. The latest average league attendance was a very impressive 7000 fans a game, led by the Las Vegas Aces who averaged 9551 per contest. (Consider that the Tampa Bay Rays drew only 19,704 for their MLB playoff game against the Texas Rangers on Oct. 3.) Over 17,000 fans packed Brooklyn’s Barclay Center on Oct. 16 where the Aces trumped the New York Liberty in a 7069 thriller to win the latest WNBA title. A national television audience also tuned in as well. So, the October 5 column wasn’t intended to slight either soccer or women, as I have always had great affection for both. (See above!) The point of that column (available via Weirs Times archives at weirs.com) was to decry situations where biological males now compete in some female competitions. Thus, I would oppose males playing in the WNBA. But if that league ever changes its rules, I wouldn’t mind playing for the Los Angeles Sparks. They can contact my agent. I can still set picks and hit the occasional three-ball! See MOFFETT on 25

Re enactors Patricia Stewart, Jeannette Stewart, Julie Morrell, Winnifred BOB LETOURNEAU PHOTO Boynton and Gene Boynton. SMITH from 19 waited on the platform to greet the passengers. I was reminded of my childhood days when I stood on that platform and watched a steampowered locomotive approach the station, or depot, as the buildings are commonly called. Those trains had a smoke stack with black smoke billowing from it,and steam hissing as it was released on the sides of the engine, making it a somewhat more exciting scene than the modern diesel engines that would a few years later take over. The water that produced the steam that powered those engines of old was heat-

ed by burning coal or wood which required a fireman as part of the train crew. The other essential crew members were the engineer and the conductor. A few years after those times of being at the Ashland station when the train came in I would get to know a couple of retired engineers who attended the first church which I served as pastor of in a railroad town in Pennsylvania. At the funeral of one of those men we sang the gospel song which included the words, “Life is like a mountain railroad, with an engineer that’s brave...” We would be at the

Ashland station because my grandfather would be coming on the train from his home in Lowell, Massachusetts. He worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad as a ticket agent. When he had completed fifty years as an employee of the railroad he was awarded a gold watch which he carried with him and would check the arrival time of the trains he rode on to see if they were on schedule. His father, my great-grandfather, also worked for the railroad and was an agent at the Waterloo Station in Warner, NH. In more recent times, Mr. Brad Wolff, a vol-

Ashland Historical Society President David Ruell holding item used to pass written notes to men on moving train. unteer at the restored Ashland station, now a railroad museum, and former teacher at the Ashland elementary school, along with his class of 2000, built a model of the Ashland railroad station as it was when it was at its busiest times with multiple tracks and buildings and even an area to hold cattle that were shipped into town and had to have a place to be kept until their owners came after them or until they were shipped out. There were freight trains as well as passenger trains that made their way to many locations in the state. The Ashland station was sold to a cooperation owned by Joseph Curley in 1960 and

later, in 1980, was given by his widow, Vera Curley, to the Ashland Historical Society for use as a museum and meeting place. The Society , with federal grants and money raised locally, was able to open the railroad museum to the public in 1999. In 1923, according to a B&MRR directory, E.F. Brown was the company’s agent in Ashland, J.W. Smith in Winona, C.I. Swain in Meredith, and A.G. Macomber in the Weirs. These men, as well as others at area railroad depots, had to be able to operate the telegraph machines that were still being used in 1923. I was interested to find out on my recent

visit at Ashland that the railroad tracks from Plymouth to Lincoln are owned by the state of New Hampshire. My thanks to Ashland Historical Society President David Ruell, Brad Wolff, and re-enactors Gene Boynton, Winnifred Boynton, and Julie Morrell for greeting me at the train depot and providing information , along with Jane Sawyer, for this article. The Historical Society is seeking donations for repair work needed at the Railroad Museum and the maintenance of the Whipple House and Toy Museum in Ashland.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, November 2, 2023 — has close to 100 nesting pairs scattered throughout the state, but mostly in the Lakes Region and along the Connecticut River. It’s an inspiring success story, similar to the osprey and peregrine falcon. The U.S. population of bald eagles improved to the point where they were delisted from the Endangered Species Act in 2007. They are still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. I can count on seeing bald eagles on my camping trips to northern New Hampshire these days. That wasn’t always the case. I prefer my sightings to be while I’m canoeing on a remote lake, but I’ll take the ones at the auto repair shop too.

A bald eagle in flight. BOSAK from 1 magnificent bird there, but not altogether surprised. I have seen a few bald eagles perched in trees along the side of a road before. A few years ago, I spotted an immature bald eagle on a snag (standing dead tree) adjacent to a busy shopping mall. Thousands of cars and people on one side, a bald eagle on the other. I recall receiving an email from a reader noting that he had seen a bald eagle perched on a light pole in the parking lot of a big-box store. Yes, the bald eagle is a true conservation success story, and the population is soaring. As the population proliferates, these types of sightings are bound to become more com-

monplace. Even so, I’m quite certain I’ll never get tired of seeing bald eagles. Bald eagles started making a strong comeback from dangerously low numbers a few decades ago, but the years since 2009 have been boom years for the proud symbol of the United States. Studies and reports show that between 2009 and 2019, the number of bald eagle nesting pairs increased from roughly 30,000 nesting pairs to about 72,000. Individual bald eagle sightings spiked even more sharply from 72,000 to 317,000. Bald eagles, which were down to 500 nesting pairs in the 1960s, were virtually extirpated from New England states, except Maine,

by the 1970s. Pesticide use, habitat loss and hunting were the main culprits of the decline. Due to conservation efforts, bald eagles now nest in all 48 contiguous states. I recall in the late 1990s when I worked in the sports departm e n t o f The Keene Sentinel, photographer Steve Hooper and I visited Nubanusit Lake in Hancock acting on a tip that a bald eagle pair was making a nest. We later met staff from Harris Center for Conservation Education to confirm the pair was indeed making a nest. There was great excitement around the news because it was the first bald eagle pair to nest in the area in decades. Fast forward to 2023 and New Hampshire

FEAST from 11 pioneer who perfected the blanching, roasting, and grinding process of nuts to create a smoother, more palatable product. He left Kellogg in the 1890’s and opened his own manufacturing business, selling his equipment to individuals. Lambert, through sales of his machinery, is credited with turning peanut butter into a lucrative cottage industry. ** The dawn of the Twentieth Century brought on a renewed spirit of entrepreneurialism. It seemed the food industry was ready for innovation. People were discovering their sweet tooth and men and women like Archibald Query were only too willing to help with products like sweet mallow creme. It was just before World War I. Most of the foods we know of today that are manufactured in large processing and packaging plants were still being batch cooked on gas or wood fired ranges in the home kitchens of ambitious individuals with a dream. Query was making and packaging his mallow confection at night and by day selling it door to door. With the advent of global war and rationing of commodities sugar, a major ingredient for mallow cream and nearly all confections, was in short supply. So Query had to set his dreams aside along with the recipe for marshmallow cream and went on to other things. Two veterans, returning home from the battlefields of Europe, settle back into their lives. H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower combine resources, making confections on the kitchen range at night and, like Query before them, are touring the neighborhoods of the north shore and greater Boston area by day selling their wares. In 1920 these two men,

with a combined savings of $500.00 purchase the recipe from Archibald Query for his marshmallow cream, a decision that, over the next one hundred years, will put Toot Sweet Marshmallow Cream Fluff or Fluff on the shelf of nearly every New England household (and perhaps the nation) at one time or another. But what about the Fluffernutter? And what’s a Liberty Sandwich? I’m glad you asked. According to internet lore, this by way of the New England Historical Society website*** Emma and Amory Curtis were a sister and brother team who too were dabbling in the fine art of confections. Amory, a successful businessman in the soda fountain equipment industry, sold his business in 1901. He then purchased a sizable piece of land in Melrose MA, built a home there, and, as big sisters tend to do, convincingly coaxed her little brother into partnering with her in the business of making Snowflake Marshmallow Creme. By 1913 the Curtis´ were in full production and by 1915 with product being sold nationwide Emma turned her sights toward marketing and the creation of recipes that would ensure this mallow creme would endure the test of time. In 1917 with the advent of World War I, food rationing, and the popularity of Peanut Butter as a protein alternative, Ms. Curtis created a recipe for two slices of bread married together with peanut butter and her delicious marshmallow cream: and the Liberty Sandwich was born. (And unbeknownst to her or anyone else: The Fluffernutter!) After the war, while Durkee and Mower were just beginning their for-

ay into mallow creme with their “Toot Sweet”, the Curtis´ with their Snowflake Marshmallow Creme was enjoying their post war popularity. Advertising in 1921 states that theirs was ¨The Original and Best¨. But within the decade Durkee and Mower would become stiff competition, taking advantage of advertising on that increasingly popular media… radio. Both brands endured for another forty years until the early 1960´s when The Curtis Marshmallow Factory was hit by arson. Effectively burning the business to the ground, Curtis decided to close its doors, giving Durkee and Mower solid footing in the Marshmallow Creme Fluff industry. But what about the Fluffernutter!!! I was getting to that. Durkee and Mower were pretty keen too at using the media of the day and playing to their audience. In the 1950´s they too were thinking up ways to market to both kids and moms. Kids liked Fluff, creating ads that played up the nutritional benefits of peanut butter to moms, when combined with a medium like fluff on bread, well that was a win / win. A sure combination for success. We can thank Madison Ave for the term “Fluffernutter” and too, we can thank them for another Simple Feast. Enjoy! smithsonianmag.com/innovation/brief-history-peanut-butter-180976525/ oxfordreference.com/ page/231#:~:text=Joseph%20 Lambert%2C%20an%20employee%20at,the%20making%20of%20 nut%20buttersnewenglandhistoricalsociety.com/revolutionaryroots-fluffernutter-sandwich/ marshmallowfluff.com/historyof-marshmallow-fluff/

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, November 2, 2023 — MAILBOAT from 2 are fighting harder and dirtier than those of us who are being attacked. I don’t think we can win this war. We are in a battle where the enemy has no moral compass and would never abide by the normative standards of any war, which in this case are simply open and honest discussions. Summit Of The Future

To The Editor: Yesteryears gold fever has a lot in common with today’s environmental fever: each promises a better future. However, finding gold gives you the freedom to live the way you want while moving towards an environmental way of life restricts freedom. American’s have something more precious than gold, and don’t know it: Liberty! Agenda 21/30 initiated at the United Nations Conference on Environment & Development Rio de Janerio, in June 1992, continues to prove the result of ignorance. Lenin’s strategy was perfectly implemented: “ identifying those non-communist he predicted would build communism as ‘useful idiots’.” What you don’t know can hurt you! This weaponized plan of environmental fever became a tool to implement a world wide “take away” of private property. The first step of tyranny implemented by the Communist Manifesto. Therefore, there is no reason for Americans to trust what the United Nations is up to next September in their two day “Summit of the Future” to be held in

New York City. They don’t want to talk of freedom. Instead, they want to discuss how to fill gaps in global governance, reaffirming existing commitments that involve Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the UN Charter. Enslaving nations and calling it liberation is the timeless Marxist “principle of reversal.” Only this time, their goal lusts after global control. As J. Edgar Hoover labeled, they are “Masters of Deceit.” Pandemic was just a trial run of total control. The climate crisis will be the tool to get them over the finish line. Our God given inherent rights will once again will be sacrificed with forced protection by Executive Order. Beware of the Green New Deal (GND)! We must stop this unconstitutional war on the American people led by globalist forces of the UN’s WHO, the WEF and all the bureaucracies of control from our government, the DHHS, CDC ,EPA et al that want to be our masters. We the people must stand up and make sure our local, county and state

officials do not walk in lockstep with the GND. Why trust federal government collusion with this global cabal intent upon controlling and stealing everything you have? Liberty demands we distrust men in seats of power at the national level. We the people must have the courage to use our Constitution as a weapon to oppose tyranny. If we do not, we will be guilty of betraying our states motto: “Live Free Or Die.” For more information about the UN Summit of the Future go to https://gojt. us/idmm. Do your own research at JBS.ORG. Help US GET OUT OF THE UN . Implore your federal representatives to reintroduce the American Sovereignty Restoration Act . Russ Payne Merrimack, NH.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, November 2, 2023 — and the Gaza crisis has flared the fires of long smoldering emotions. The political logjam broke when a draft resolution came before the full 193 member General Assembly which called for an “ immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities” between Israel and Hamas. The text appealed for a “humanitarian pause” with food and water supplies into besieged Gaza, still shamefully failed to mention Hamas terrorism or over 200 Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Canada pressed for an amendment which “Unequivocally rejects and condemns the terrorist attacks by Hamas that took place in Israel starting on 7 October 2023 and the taking of hostages, demands the safety, well-being and humane treatment of the hostages.” Sadly the move fell flat. Besides largely Israelis, the hostages are from twenty-five other countries as well. The non-legally binding resolution easily passed in a political supercharged environment followed by almost giddy and venal applause. The voting saw 120 states support the resolution including the Arab states, China

and Russia, most of the developing world, aka Global South such as Brazil, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Thailand. Only 14 countries were opposed including Israel, the United States, Austria and Hungary. And 45 countries abstained including Italy, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom. The Arab world’s disingenuous “brotherhood” with the Palestinian people goes as far as political rhetoric but abruptly ends there; which Arab state save for the Kingdom of Jordan and Lebanon has does much to resettle or seriously assist Palestinian refugees, least of all from Gaza? Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erden stated bitterly, “Today is a day that will go down as infamy. We have all witnessed that the UN no longer holds even one ounce of legitimacy or relevance,” he said, telling the Assembly: “Shame on you.” The world as we know it is dangerously unravelling while we watch.

war launched resulting in the death of 1,184 Israelis); the Gaza Withdrawal of 2005 (Hamas was elected and has been launching terror attacks ever since); Ehud Olmert’s 2008 peace plan (rejected by Mahmoud Abbas outright); and former President Donald Trump’s so-called Deal of the Century (rejected before even being seen). But Israel, the lie goes, must continue to make painful concessions. If they don’t, Jew-murder is inevitable. Moral equivalence restored! Finally, there’s the third lie: that anti-Zionism has nothing to do with antisemitism. That lie is currently being encouraged by the equation of antisemitism with Islamophobia by many members of our elite. The antisemitism we see today on college campuses is part and parcel of the anti-Semitism that ended with the slaughter of 1,500 Jews in the Gaza Envelope: hatred of Jews is the driving force behind hatred of Israel. But in order to restore any semblance of moral cover for hating Israel, anti-Zionism must be separated from anti-Semitism. The easiest way to accomplish that is to downplay the obvious reflection between international Jew-hatred and attacks on Israel, and instead to subsume anti-Semitism under the broader rubric of lack of multicultural tolerance. It’s a lie, and it’s an obvious lie. Yes, there are occasional acts of targeting of Muslims. They are nothing like the targeting of Jews. They do not follow the same logic, they do not occur anywhere near as frequently, and they are not spurred by a sort of cycle of violence

in the Middle East. All of these comforting lies are useful in allowing the morally idiotic to attempt to regain a high ground via a falsely restored moral equivalence. And how eager they are for that moral equivalence! That moral equivalence allows Leftist Jews to pretend that they won’t be lumped in with their fellow Jews by the intersectional coalition; it allows the intersectional to pretend that they are on the side of the righteous even as they make excuses for Hamas; it allows the international community to continue to pressure Israel after the mass murder of Jews. Never Again doesn’t apply, after all, if the Jews are part of the problem. And so, after approximately one week of global dyspepsia with the evil of Hamas, the world is gradually returning to its steady diet of moral equivalency. They’re doing so with eagerness and alacrity. And that should be terrifying to those who actually oppose genocidal Jewhatred.

— THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, November 2, 2023 —

PARKER from 6 Those administering, teaching and learning at Harvard and our other leading universities are not consumed by scholarship and truthseeking, but by ideology. Ideology is strikingly similar to another word: idol. Something man builds for himself and worships. It is the product of egotism and pride and not the product of humility, which comes only from knowing there is a truth bigger than you, of which you are part. Claudine Gay condemned hate and said her university is about bringing people with differences together. This is a university president who does not see “veritas,” truth, and good and evil in the world, as embodied and conveyed in the message on her university seal

and its history. The job of universities is to pursue truth. But this is impossible when they do not believe truth exists. Thinking that the point is bringing together people rather than pursing truth is an exercise in ideology, not scholarship, and leads only to the social, cultural and spiritual degeneration we are experiencing. If we want to save our country, let’s save our places of learning. Let’s purge the sea of ethnic, political and ideological clubs that dominate social and intellectual life at what are supposed to be our institutions of learning. The terrorists are financed by the sale of oil. That oil was found, developed and is worth mega-billions because of Western technology. A disproportionate con-

tribution to the development of that science and technology has come from the very people whose homeland is Israel, against whom the terrorists commit atrocities. The United States grew and became great with the values that brought forth the miracle that is the modern State of Israel. The moral relativism and hedonism of America’s left is now obliterating these truths. A new birth of freedom in America means a new birth of truth and learning at our universities. They squelched all dissent and said, ‘You’re a conspiracy theorist if you’re saying this (came from a lab),’ but they didn’t reveal that they had a monetary self-incentive to cover this up,” says Paul. “The media is weirdly un-curious about this,” I say to Paul. “We have a disease that killed maybe 16

We could wind up with a virus ... that leaks out of a lab and kills half of the planet,” Paul warns. Paul’s book reveals much more about Fauci and EcoHealth Alliance.
