At Waterville Valley Resort the lifts open at 9 am during the week, an hour later than the weekends. Kris and I tried to arrive in time to be in the lift-

line before they started loading the chairs but we didn’t quite make it. But a lot of people did make it. By the time we put on our ski boots and stashed our boot bags in the outdoor cubbies there was no

longer anyone waiting in line. They were all spread out over the slopes and we skated right on through to the lift. Still, no excuses, we were ten minutes late. We found a good parking place in

the second lot near the stairway to the lodge. Redeeming our Indy Passes at the ticket counter was quick and they were able to reload my RFID card from last season. I was happy I See PATENAUDE on 24

To The Editor: After the outrage in 2016 over election interference by the Russians to get Donald Trump elected you would think the MSM would be sensitive to election interference in all future elections. And they were. They immediately denounced the Hunter Biden laptop as Russian disinformation in the run up to the 2020 election. They even published the letter signed by 51 former intelligence officials and spread it across the airwaves and press before the 2020 election. Well, the laptop has been verified as Hunter’s so why wasn’t there an investigation similar to the Mueller special counsel to investigate the 51 signers of that letter? Why did the FBI and DOJ punt on that investigation, leaving it to the Republican House Oversight committee to investigate? The committee found the Biden administration conspired with the 51 signers to influence the 2020 election. The woods seem to be full of surprises this winter. Last week I wrote about the gray catbird I have been seeing on my walks this winter. On a walk last week, which was done when it was about 15 degrees outside, I had four species that were marked as “unusual” by eBird, a massive database of bird sightings. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the birds are rare, but rather they are not commonly seen in New England during the winter. With anticipation mounting and parties planned for the NFL Super Bowl, Pastor Peter Lovett and the Sunday School children from the 1st Congregational Church of Meredith have kicked off their exciting Souper Bowl of Caring & Sharing food drive. The goal is to overfill the shelves of the Meredith Food Pantry with record breaking donations, all of which are greatly appreciated during these times of rising food costs. From February 4-11, E. M. Newfound Nature Station Is Exploring Winter

HEBRON - Join the Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA) as they take some time to notice the variety of colors, sounds, and sights in winter. A Serious Problem I got a very disturbing phone call from an old friend yesterday. He was more than a bit agitated over recent developments and he by Brendan Smith certainly wasn’t Weirs Times Editor alone. I had heard from others who were also had good friends who were dealing with this as well. A newly recognized phenomenon for sure, but something that actually been around for years, especially the last decade or so. I’m talking about No More Mailers Syndrome or NMMS. You may have experienced a form of it yourself, but hopefully not as bad as some. It’s something we all are susceptible to, it just depends on your mindset. If you suffer from it, you know it goes something like this. It’s the day after an election or primary day and you drive home not really thinking about it . You arrive at home, park your car and then go to your mailbox. You open it up, look inside and that’s when NMMS hits you. There are all the regular bills and magazines and flyers, but something is missing and a chill runs down your spine. You bend down to have a closer look and realize that it’s true. There are no large cardboard political mailers. There are no oversized pictures of Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, President Trump or even, believe it or not Nikki Haley. You had heard that this might happen, but found it hard to believe. They had become a part of your life over the last several months and you had counted on them more than you realized. It started innocently enough with Doug Burgum, but that now seems like an eternity ago. There were the electric and credit card bills and the rest of the usual suspects. But then

unexpectedly one day (I think it was a Wednesday if my memory serves me correctly) there was a cardboard mailer from Burgum. It seemed innocent enough at the time. Nobody really had any idea who the guy even was, let him have his fun. But it was a harbinger of what was to come. And for those who suffer from NMMS from past campaigns, it brought on a very foreboding feeling. Most sufferers had just really started to feel a bit relaxed after the 2022 election season. For some the symptoms would only last for a few months. For others it could take a good year. For them, seeing that first oversized mailer appearing a little bit earlier than expected in a primary campaign season was rather terrifying, yet a strange sense of comfort also set in. They knew what was to come and come it did. Sleep became uneasy as the Tim Scott and Ramaswamy mailers started to arrive, followed soon by all the rest. Still, in the beginning, they only appeared every few days, enough time for one to catch their breath and repeat to themselves what the NMMS therapists had taught them to say three times in rapid succession: “It is only cardboard. It has no hold over me. I can get through this.” And, for some, it did work but for many others they fell right back into the syndrome once things really started to get hot and heavy. It is when the anti-mailers started to show up. The ones from special interest groups whose sole purpose is to try to offset the positive campaign messages of a candidate with the message of despair. Soon these giant monstrosities started to appear every day and then, as we all know, the weakness finally falls for good when there are sometimes as many as a half dozen or more of these “things” stuffed into your mailbox. But for those who would suffer from NMMS, they become ex-

pected. Never came the day when there was no mail and one came to depend on them. In their own inexplicable way, they became a comfort, something to look forward to, a habit. The candidates became friends of sorts, love them or hate them. They were always there for you. By December and January they became overwhelming and a nuisance to many, but to NMMS sufferers, they were welcome and expected. Mingled in with all of the joyful Christmas greetings and messages from family and friends, a giant political mailer from a PAC somewhere explaining to you why such and such a candidate will bring chaos and despair if elected became strangely welcomed by NMMS sufferers. They became hooked to the messages of hope and gloom and doom delivered to their mailboxes each day. Soon anxiously waiting to arrive home to get their daily fix. And then, suddenly, they were no more. I don’t want to really get into the struggle those who suffer with NMMS have to deal with. There’s the suddenly empty mailbox, or worse, only junk mail from this company or that. But no more candidates. Now that primary season is over, many of them suffer still in silence. It might be your neighbor or even a friend or colleague. There are signs, the hunched shoulders and downward glances after primary day, a sudden short lived spark of light in their eyes when the mailman comes and goes. As of today no cure has been found for No More Mailers Syndrome, just the love and support of family and loved ones. But not to worry. It is 2024 after all and soon their mailboxes will be flooded again and all will be good in their world. But come November 6th, they will need our support once again.

Social Security: A Broken Socialist Dinosaur It seems many still harbor, or want to perpetuate, the illusion that our Social Security system is not in trouble. Let me quote here from a press release from the Social Security Administration released March 31, 2023: “The Social Security Board of Trustees today released its annual report on the fiby Star Parker nancial status of the Social Security Trust Syndicated Columnist Funds. The combined asset reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Disability Insurance (OASI and DI) Trust Funds are projected to become depleted in 2034, one year earlier than projected last year, with 80% of benefits payable at that time.” In 2034, per the report, “if Congress does not act before then ... there would be sufficient income coming in to pay 80% of scheduled benefits.” It couldn’t be clearer. In 10 years, with no action from Congress, everyone will begin receiving 80% of what they are currently receiving, or promised, under the existing Social Security system. Can anyone imagine getting a notice from a private retirement provider saying that in 10 years all beneficiaries will begin receiving 80% of what they were promised? How did we get into this situation? It’s the wonders of government planning, of socialism. Social Security is not a pension program based on investments. It is a government tax and spend program. The stipends of current retirees are paid with the payroll tax of those currently working. Because life spans have increased and population growth has decreased, there are far fewer working now to support each retiree than was the case years ago. Socialism is always mugged by reality. The Committee to Unleash Prosperity estimates that over the last 40 years, the annual real return of Social Security for “the typical middle-class worker” has been about 1% per year. Today, 30-year government bonds yield over 4%. The historic long-term return on stocks is 6%. Inflation adjusted. The paltry returns on Social Security are going to turn out much worse. Notes From Auschwitz This week, I visited Auschwitz. I had never before visited any of the death camps. The experience is absolutely chilling. Auschwitz, of course, was a complex of camps, the three largest of which by Ben Shapiro were Auschwitz I, the Syndicated Columnist camp most famous for the terrifyingly Orwellian German slogan welded onto its entrance, “ARBEIT MACHT FREI”; Auschwitz II, also known as Birkenau, the massive death factory at which the Germans operated four large gas chambers, each of which could be used to murder 2,000 people at a time; and Auschwitz III, a large labor camp. Visiting in January, with the ice covering the ground, is a reminder of the cruelties that are possible when human beings commit to the perverse disease of Jew-hatred. Auschwitz was liberated some 79 years ago this month. But that perverse disease is alive and well. As survivor Marian Turski says, “Auschwitz did not fall suddenly from the skies, it was all tiny steps approaching until what happened here behind me did happen.” That gradualism masked the greatest evil in world history. As we descended into Krakow for the visit, I read the diaries of Victor Klemperer, a secular, intermarried Jew who had converted to Protestantism and who lived in Dresden during the period of Hitler’s rule. Klemperer details the slow but steady changes that turned Jews into outcasts, no matter their ideology or even religious practice. Klemperer, for his part, considered himself a good German and the Nazis the outliers; even in 1942, Klemperer wrote, “I am fighting the most difficult of battles for my German-ness now. I must hold on to it: I am German, the others are un-German.” His protestations meant nothing. Why? Because Jew-hatred is and was a conspiracy theory rooted in the supposed power of the Jew. And there is nothing new about

that theory; it is seductive and easy and ancient. In Egypt, Pharaoh spoke thus: “Look, the children of Israel are too numerous and large for us. Let us deal shrewdly with them, so that they may not increase.” In Persia, Haman told Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people, scattered and dispersed among the other peoples in all the provinces of your realm, whose laws are different from those of any other people and who do not obey the king’s laws.” In Poland, Bogdan Chmielnicki told the Poles that they had been sold by the Polish nobility “into the hands of the accursed Jews.” In Russia, the bestselling “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” alleged a Jewish conspiracy to exploit and control the gentile world. In Germany, Hitler wrote that the Jews sought to make the gentile world “ripe for the slave’s lot of permanent subjugation.” Today, across the Muslim world the toxic proposition that the Jews control the world is a popular notion and provides justification for murderous terrorist attacks on Jewish civilians: according to a recent poll from the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, only 5% of all Middle Eastern and North African Arabs condemned Oct. 7 as an “illegitimate operation.” Across time and place, such ideas sprang from religion, from ethnic polarization, from nationalistic excess. Today, at least in the West, such ideas spring from an ideology that suggests a hierarchy of oppression that dominates Western societies, in which disproportionately successful groups are victimizers and disproportionately unsuccessful groups the victimized. It is no coincidence that LGBTQ+ and BLM activists, who propagate that victim/victimizer narrative, side with the genocidal Jew-hating terror group Hamas. According to a recent Harvard/Harris poll, some 67% of people aged 18-24 in the United States say that the Jews “as a class are oppressors and should be treated as oppressors.” Visiting Auschwitz, one can see the apex results of such perverse ideas. The Most Dangerous Conservative The New York Times put Charles Murray on the cover of its Sunday Magazine, calling him “The Most Dangerous Conservative.” That was after by John Stossel he co-wrote the Syndicated Columnist b o o k , “ T h e B e l l Curve,” which argued that different ethnic groups have, on average, different IQs. As Murray puts it in my video this week, “Blacks on average have a lower IQ than whites. However, whites are not at the top. East Asians, on average, have a

higher IQ than whites. Ashkenazi Jews have higher IQs.” Other researchers agree. An article in ScienceDirect journal puts it this way, “East Asians and their descendants average an IQ of about 106, Europeans and their descendants about 100, and Africans and their descendants about 85.” But many people don’t believe it. Many don’t even want such topics discussed. Last time Murray tried speaking to college students, a mob shouted him down. “They’re angry at you because you’re perpetuating racism,” I tell

Murray. “These kids,” he replies, “never read a word of anything I’d ever written.” That’s probably true. The systemic chaos which has befallen a string of countries in the Sub-Saharan Sahel region, has gone largely unnoticed by most of the media, except perhaps for Boko Haram’s mass kidnappings in Nigeria. “In just a few short years, Africa has become a global epicenter of

terrorism,” warned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, “This growing inferno is engulfing millions of Africans.” Addressing a meeting of the Global CounterTerrorism Compact, the Secretary General stated, “Across the continent, Da’esh, Al-Qaida and their affiliates are exploiting local conflict dynamics and fragilities to advance their agendas.” The problem stems from a spate of simmering conflicts in the Sahel states such as Mali,Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, as well as the endemic collapse of political institutions in much of this landlocked former French colonial region. Besides entrenched insurgencies, a series of Coup d’Etats (govern-

ment overthrows) have plagued the countries and seen military regimes replace largely incompetent or corrupt civilian governments. While this is not entirely new, the fact remains that France, the former military and economic “protector” of the region, has largely pulled out during the Presidency of Emmanuel Macron, thus leaving a dangerous power vacuum which has been filled by Russian mercenaries and a gaggle of jaded political players. Secretary General Guterres admonished, “Across the Sahel, the increased hostilities between terrorist groups fighting for control over territory and trafficking are creating nothing short of a hell

Meet Cenk Uygur host of the Young Turks which was named after a group of Muslims who committed genocide against the Christian Armenians from 1915-1923 where 600,000 to 1.5 million souls including women and children were murdered. Uygur has denied that the Armenian Holocaust happened. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1970, and at the age of eight moved to the United States. As a young man, he was conservative but since then has become a hard leftist. He was raised in a secular Muslim home but now considers himself an agnostic. He harbors a particular contempt for conservative Evangelical Christians. This Progressive paragon of virtue supports the legalization of bestiality “where the animal is being pleasured” which even surprised his self-loathing, foul-mouthed sidekick Ana Kasparian. In 2019-2020, he ran twice-for California’s 25th Congressional district. The first election was a special election to fill the vacant seat, and the

Cenk Uygur second was the general election. All the left-wing PAC money couldn’t get him a seat in Congress. He initially was endorsed by Bernie Sanders, but ‘The Bern” withdrew his endorsement after learning of Uygur’s racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic comments he has made over the years. He is a 2024 candidate for President of the United States knowing full well that he is Constitutionally unqualified. In September of 2011, I encountered him at an event at Harvard University’s School of Law called A Conference on the Constitutional Convention that was co-hosted by Mark Meckler and leftist Harvard law professor Larry Lessig. Cenk was interviewing Lessig, and they both hoped for a “runaway” Article V convention. I videotaped the conversation. Readers can find that video on Camp Constitution’s YouTube channel. In the wake of the Harvard event, Uygur formed Wolf PAC-a group that is lobbying for an Article V Convention. Mark Meckler followed by

forming Convention of States (COS), and Lessig founded the May Day PAC. The goal of Wolf PAC ostensibly is to hold an Article V Convention to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would end “corporate personhood” and give the federal government more power over elections. They were able to get five states to pass Article V applications, but two of the states have wisely rescinded leaving only RI, VT, and CA with extant Wolf PAC resolutions. In the 2016, and 2018, election cycles, Wolf PAC used 80% of its funds for salaries and expenses. What is an Article V Convention? The Weirs Times ran an article I wrote about this last year, but I will give a brief refresher. Our founders gave us two ways to amend the U.S. Constitution found in Article V of the U.S. Constitution: “The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or,

on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress…” While the first method has been used a number of times, the second method where states apply for a convention has never happened and for good reason. Since its inception, Wolf PAC lobbyists have tried unsuccessfully to get their Article V Resolutions passed in New Hampshire. Convention of States and now Term Limits USA have been collaborating closely with Wolf PAC. COS, which enjoys the support of many well-meaning conservatives, have vociferously denied working with Wolf PAC, but such an alliance was on full display on January 19 at the New Hampshire State House where the House Committee on State and Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs held hearing on HCR 8 and HCR 9. HCR 8 is a vaguely written resolution, sponsored by Wolf PAC that calls for New Hampshire to pass an application for an Article V Convention to introduce amendments that would end corporate personhood and have free and fair See SHURTLEFF on 26

Political candidates and parties embrace woke agendas which aim to destroy Christian faith in general and the family and godly male leadership in particular. In light of your condition, let me answer your second question, “how will it end?” King David can give you the answer. I asked him to compose one of the Psalms in my book the Bible. In the 110th Psalm he recorded the words I gave him to write. He begins by saying, “the LORD said to my Lord: sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” (Psalm 110:1). David was King, he had no LORD but God. Yet he spoke of having a Lord who was at the right hand of God. Who was this? It was his Messiah, Jesus, my son! He foretold the fact that he would walk the earth and one day die to pay the penalty price for David’s and your sins. Because he was God and both sinless and eternal, he was able to pay that price and offer to all who would receive Him, salvation from the penalty and the opportunity to stand in judgment and live with me forever. You are living in that time now. He did return to heaven after he was raised from the dead and sits now at my right hand, as David said, awaiting the

time of my patience ending with final judgement (Acts 1::11). Unfortunately, you are getting farther away from me because you have rejected me, my Son and my will. Note however that in the rest of the Psalm, I asked David to affirm that my Son will, at that time of judgment, return and “rule in the midst of … enemies” and “will extend your mighty scepter from Zion.” (:2). He will return to vanquish all enemies and rule over all the kings of the earth. This was confirmed in the Psalm when I said, “the LORD has sworn and will not change his mind.” (:4). When my son returns, “he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing he rulers of the whole earth.” (:5,6). Can’t you see that your rebellion and sin will not end well. “There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.” (Proverbs 21:30). Can’t you see that many of your leaders fear you more than me and want your votes more than your safety and security by living and leading you away from obeying me? Don’t you think it is strange that many of your leaders claim to be “Christians,” and therefore know or should know my word and will, and yet they lead in ways that hasten my judgement. How do you explain this? It is simple. They are “Christians” in name only. They continue to make themselves “gods” by encouraging practices and values that give you what you may want but not what you need. These “gods” can’t save you and can only lead

Yes, you are headed for disaster. Do you really think that you can transgress my laws and the design I made to enhance your life, and not suffer severe consequences as a result? I told the Psalmist to write, “unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain, unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.” (Psalm 127:1). Instead of recognizing your arrogance and pride manifested in rejecting me and brazenly disobeying me, you continue to move farther and faster from my will. I have spoken often of my patience with your sinful practices, how I give you time to return to me (2 Peter 3:9). I have also spoken often of the fact that if you use this time of my patience to continue in your ways, my patience will end, and I will bring judgement and severe consequences (2 Peter 3:10-12). Many of your leaders are godless and espouse values that are godless in order to win the votes of others to maintain their power and positions. Instead of being responsible adults and leading those they serve out of behaviors that are destructive and deserve judgement, they endorse, even legalize them as appropriate and good. You are system-

Ask my son, Jesus, to forgive your sins and restore you to me. Then choose leaders who fear me and honor me in their life and decisions. Leaders like this will never push their beliefs and values on you but will lead you. Then as you maintain values and make laws that will honor me and as you follow my ways, your lives and nation will be enhanced, and threats of judgment will recede. Numerous surveys over the past 15 years indicated that the New England Patriots were America’s most hated NFL team. That may change now that Pats franchise has gone to crap. But there was a time, back before the turn of the century, when another NFL franchise was easily the most hated. The Dallas Cowboys. The self-proclaimed “America’s Team,” the Cowboys had swagger, tradition, five Super Bowl trophies and those wonderful cheerleaders. “How ‘bout them Cowboys?” as Dallas coach Jimmy Johnson used to shout in the early 90s. But after Dallas won its third Super Bowl in four years in 1996, the Cowboys went to crap. Starting in 2000, the team had three straight 5-11 seasons. Between 1996 and 2009, the team didn’t win a single

They totally beat up the Cowboys, winning 48-32. It hurts to lose, but it especially hurts for the Cowboys to lose in Texas where they were big favorites with those high Super Bowl expectations. One hundred years ago Henry Keyes of Haverhill ran unopposed in the 1924 New Hampshire Republican primary in a campaign to retain his seat as a United States Senator. He would go on to defeat his Democratic opponent in the November general election, receiving alnost 60% of the vote. In another six years Keyes would be elected in the 1930 election for his third and final term as one of New Hampshire’s legislative representatives in the U.S. Senate. It might be well for us to consider what kind of people have served New Hampshire in years past, including Senator Keyes a few years back in time. Back when Henry Wilder Keyes had been a the junior senator from New Hampshire for a couple of years the Boston Globe published an article about him explaining how he came to be a citizen of New Hampshire instead

The Keyes family home. of staying in his native Vermont. Henry was born in Newbury, Vermont

along the border with New Hampshire which is the Connecticut River. His father, also

named Henry, was involved with extending the railroad from White River to Newbury on the Vermont side of the river. A big ledge was discovered which hindered the construction project. The rock was blasted to make way for the railroad and dumped into the river. A farmer who owned a 1500 acre tract of land on the New Hampshire side of the river claimed that the dumping of the remains of the ledge into the water had changed the course of the river with resultant damage to his property in the Granite State. This was disputed by Mr. Keyes who was arrested one day when he ventured over the river to the New Hampshire side. The dispute was eventually resolved with Mr. Keyes buying the property and moving his family over the river to the site in North Haverhill, New Hampshire. The younger Henry Keyes would make his home in Haverhill for most of the rest of his life taking time to attend school and some time overseas before becoming involved in politics along with business ventures and farming. I admit I was a bit skeptical reading the post on Crockpot Chicken and Stuffing. “It’s heaven on a plate!” and “It smells just like Thanksgiving!” were two terms used to describe this dish. But then again, no one writing cooking blogs for a living would ever post less than stellar accounts of their exploits, I suppose. But, it gave me a starting point to work from to make it my own. So I did! Suffering from a recent disappointment (a muffin recipe gone amuck) I decided I needed some easy comfort food to restore my self-confidence. With all the ingredients, a few changes, and nothing but time on my hands, I decided to give it a whirl. Execution: Not me, I’m just the messenger! The dish. To start with I pulled a package of split chicken breasts from the fridge. Nearly four and a half pounds bone in, the recipe called for about 2.5 to 3 pounds of boneless chicken. A little extra wouldn’t hurt, would it? Well, it

wasn’t really an issue until leftovers the following day. The leftovers tightened up a bit, becoming a tad dry overnight. Just remember, when preparing leftovers you may find rehydrating them with a little chicken stock will be to your liking. And what better way to make chicken stock than with some chicken bones and vegetable cuttings? Leaving a bit of meat on the bones, I still had plenty of boneless chicken left. I actually could have separated the tenders from the breasts and used them for another meal. The three chicken breasts offered plenty of meat

for this dish and more. Stock Options: Now, I know I have written on stock before but I just cannot help but remind people of how simple it is to make. The chicken skin and bones, a celery heart, that center cluster of small stalks and leaves, a couple of small carrots and some peelings, along with half an onion coarsely chopped went into a large pot. Add in a gallon of water, a few dashes of salt, some pepper, and other seasonings to add volume and enhance the flavor and you are on your way. Covered and brought to a boil for

about an hour or so, this made a delicious low sodium broth/ stock. I needed about two cups for this dish while the rest I could use for a soup or as a cooking liquid for pork, chicken, or rice dishes over the next few days. And I even picked the bones clean of the meat for an additional cup of chicken which I used for a Chicken, Cranberry, and Walnut Salad Sandwich. I am often asked, “Can you freeze stocks and broths?” The short answer is, “Yes!” Now, will it harm the quality of the stock if you freeze it? The answer is, use it in a reasonable time frame from when you made it (within six months) for best quality. Refrigerated stock, by the way, can be kept in an airtight container for up to four days (according to the latest ServSafe recommendations). Stocks and broths made with proteins should be discarded after four days. Refrigeration only slows the growth of harmful pathogens, it does not kill pathogens. As a side note on freezing broths and stocks, cool the liquid in the fridge first. See FEAST on 20

The original recipe called for two cans of cream of chicken soup, (about 4,350 milligrams of sodium) and a box of prepared stuffing mix (another 2,700mg of sodium). Add to this two cups of commercial stock and the sodium content for this recipe is about 7,800mg of sodium, or 650mg per serving. Holy Cow! That’s a Salt Lick! The three biggest offenders (outlined above) in this recipe needed some alterations. I did this in two ways: I substituted Sour Cream for a can of soup and I used low sodium homemade stock. The stock had about 18mg of sodium per cup and the Sour Cream 184mg of sodium per cup. This translates to about 438mg of sodium per serving, down from 650mg, a difference of

212mg or about a onethird reduction from the original amount per serving. That is a significant reduction and still the dish tasted delicious. Last Looks: I’m not going to lie to you, don’t expect eye popping color and you will not be disappointed. The final product, while rather tasty, lacks a bit in eye appeal. With all its earth tones perhaps it is a bit reminiscent of something one would serve on toast to troops in a chow line or maybe an entree found on the menu of a 1930’s hash house. But the flavor was delicious! And served over Garlic Mashed Potatoes? Even better! The only thing missing would be a side of jellied Cranberry Sauce, a dinner roll , and Tapioca Pudding for dessert. And yes, I admit I just described institutional hot lunch, but deep down who didn’t like Hot Turkey Sandwich day with all the

CROCKPOT CHICKEN AND STUFFING Yield:12 Servings Time: 5-6 Hours (Crockpot Temps Vary)

INGREDIENTS 2 ½ to 3 pounds Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast ½ Medium Onion diced 2 Medium Carrots peeled and diced 2 Stalks Celery diced 10-12 Mushrooms coarsely chopped

1 Box Stuffing Mix 1 15oz can Condensed Cream of Chicken Soup 1 Cup Sour Cream 2 Cups Chicken Stock ¼ stick Butter melted ½ tsp. +/- Shortening or Cooking Spray

-Preparation- Lightly grease or spray the crockpot with the shortening or cooking spray. - Arrange the boneless skinless breasts in the bottom of the crockpot. - Pour 1.5 cups of stock over the chicken breasts. - Place the onion, carrot, celery, mushrooms in a mixing bowl, pour in the stuffing mix, and drizzle the melted butter over the stuffing mix. Combine the contents, mixing thoroughly. - To the vegetables and stuffing add the sour cream, soup, and remaining chicken stock. Mix completely to combine then cover by heaping spoonfuls, the chicken with the stuffing mix. - Place the cover on the crockpot and set on high for one hour, then turn back to low for the remaining 4 hours. (Your time and temp. may vary for your crockpot.) - Check the chicken temperature. If 165 degrees F. and falls apart easily, it is done. - Remove the chicken from the crock pot, shred with two forks, and return it to the pot, mixing with the contents of the pot. It will resemble a creamed chicken dish. - Serve over mashed potatoes, toast, or rice

trimmings? So, what about the stuffing? My thoughts exactly, as I peered into the crockpot five hours later. To steal a phrase never uttered by Rod Serling, “Imagine if you will…” because after five hours, the stuffing becomes a figment of your imagination. Like an episode of the Twilight Zone, the stuffing starts out a tangible reality but quickly turns surreal, making one question if they actually put stuffing in the pot. However, once you taste this creation, you too will say, “Yep! It tastes like Chicken and Stuffing!” While falling short of being “heaven on a plate”,

it was not disappointing. And it did indeed smell like “Thanksgiving cooking” when I came in from getting the mail. I think Crockpot Chicken and Stuffing can truly be described as “a delicious malfeasance”. What this dish lacks in eye appeal and a misleading moniker, it more than makes up for in both flavor and heartiness. Perfect for a cold winter’s eve, one taste of this dish is all the reassurance you need that you are only one plate away from… a Simple Feast. Enjoy!

He started his political career as a selectman in Haverhill and continued up the ladder from a state representative to state senator to governor to being elected to the United States Senate. He actually held both offices, that of Governor of New Hampshire and that of U.S. Senator, at the same time for a couple months. Senator Keyes did not make a lot of noise as a public servant but he was known as a man who was dedicated to his job. The Globe article said “There is nothing of the old-fashioned dillydallying politician about him....He thinks quickly and acts promptly on all matters he has to deal with...” Senator Keyes father was said to have died of hard work. He had been a merchant in Newbury, Vermont before becoming involved in the railroad business and building rail lines in the western part of the country. He was the president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railway system. The Globe reported that it was Boston money that built the Santa Fe railroad system across the plains and the Burlington system, and that

The older Henry Keyes was a Vermont Democrat and the younger Henry Keyes served New Hampshire as a Democrat in the state house of representatives before being elected as a Republican to the state senate, the governorship, and the United States Senate. When the elder Mr. Keyes died in Kansas he left a widow and five children and his farm in Haverhill, New Hampshire. The future senator was attending Harvard College when his father died where he was making a reputation for himself as a star athlete, competing in foot races, high jump, football, and an oarsman on the varsity crew of which he was captain in his senior year. With his father gone Henry Wilder felt obligated to help his mother manage the farm to which he would return from Harvard on Friday nights and, after spending Saturday and Sundays there, would return to school on Monday morning. Setting aside

his ambitions to be a lawyer, Henry instead gave his attention to managing the farm in Haverhill. According to the Boston Globe newspaper concerning Keyes’ early years in Washington he was known only as “a wealthy farmer, railroad president and director in big corporations, and that he had been the ‘war governor’ of his state.” Several World War I war policies were enacted during his term as New Hampshire’s 65th governor, a Boston and Maine Railroad restructuring plan was initiated, and a state library commission was established. Keyes was the founder and president of the Woodsville National Bank. In 2012 then state representative Dean Dexter discovered that among the former governors’ portraits on the New Hampshire State House wall the one labeled Gov. Keyes was not really Henry Keyes but someone else, later identified as a congressman from Rochester during the Civil War era

named Jacob Hart Ela. The wrong picture was replaced with a genuine portrait of Governor Keyes. As a U.S. Senator Keyes had a reputation of not speaking on the Senate floor and of voting silently by nodding to indicate an “aye” vote and shaking his head to indicate that he was voting “nay.” He was known “for strict attention to his duties, businesslike methods and a desire to treat all matters that come before him in a broad and National sense.” He was interested in aeronautics and advocated the establishment of a Bureau of Aeronautics and was a member of the committees of Agriculture and Forestry, Immigration, and Public Buildings and Grounds. The fact that New Hampshire citizens elected him to serve three six-year terms in the Senate indicates the trust they had in him. Senator Keyes married Frances Parkinson when he was forty and she was eighteen and they made their main home in the house he had built for them on their North Haverhill farm. Henry and Frances had three children and she became a prolific writer. Though remembered for his involvement in transportation and other business, Henry seems to have been known especially for his agriculture business. He is said to have introduced the Holstein-Friesian breed of cattle into this country and to have won many blue ribbons at shows and fairs for his cattle, French coach horses, sheep, and swine. Henry Wilder Keyes died in 1938, and was buried in the town of his birth, Newbury, Vermont.

BOSAK from 3 branch above a trail when I heard another bird in the vicinity. I turned and found another red-tailed hawk perched on another nearby branch. The sound, however, was not coming from either of the hawks. I zeroed in on the sound and found a sapsucker calling and tapping on a tree beneath the hawks. I watched the bird for several minutes as it did what sapsuckers do: tap on trees and lick the sap that drips from the holes. It was interesting to watch and a good indication of how some birds are named because of behavioral traits. Coincidentally, about half an hour later into the walk, I found another yellow-bellied sapsucker. This one was in a completely different part of the park and was simply flitting from tree

the trail with plenty of berries around to sustain it. An obvious question that comes to mind is whether or not climate change is altering the migration patterns of bird species. There is evidence that climate is impacting migration in many ways, most obviously in the timing and how far the birds go. That’s why citizen science projects such as eBird, Christmas Bird Count, Great Backyard Bird Count and Project Feeder are so vital in providing information for scientists to analyze and answer those questions. The Great Backyard Bird Count is right around the corner in mid-February. I’ll provide more details on how to participate (it’s free) in a future For the Birds column. As the saying goes, “Leave on Time, Arrive on Time!” As we zoomed up the mountain riding on their wonderful fast and comfortable six-pack bubble chair we knew in just a few minutes we’d be skiing down the mountain. Enjoying our first tracks over and over. Over the night it had snowed an inch or two and that snow landed on nicely groomed snow. The weather was really nice with some blue

sky and a few clouds floating around high above the mountains. From the summit we could see the bright white tip of Mount Washington. Osceola and the Tripyramids loomed large nearby, the scenery was splendid. It was a great day to ski and be on a mountaintop. The steep black diamond trails Ciao and Gema were wonderful. So wonderful that we alternated our first six runs on these two trails. They were wide open and we felt like we werenthe only ones enjoying them. Maybe most people were sticking to the trails closer to the six-pack lift. The

snow conditions made for easy turning and for tons of fun. We noticed that racers wearing Harvard and Williams College ski jackets were training on Upper Sel to Tommy’s run. We stayed clear of the race training. They only trained a couple hours and we skied those trails later in the morning after they had taken down the course. Later in the morning more people had arrived to ski and a liftline did form but it was never more than a couple of minutes to wait. With all the open terrain the skiers and snowboarders were scattered all over and the slopes never felt

(As I write now the big event begins tomorrow and is over by the time this comes to print and I am cheering for our Team USA!). Kris wouldn’t ride with me up the High Country. She says she won’t ride a T-bar and wouldn’tnlisten to me tell her T-bars are my favorite lift. She would have none of it and she sent me off totake a few runs by myself. I don’t think it was my imagination that the snow was even better on top. Waterville was wonderful and we skied run after run until our legs yelled, “Uncle.” Kris and I look forward to skiing at Waterville Valley Resort again soon. A few days later I returned to Waterville Valley to cross country ski with my husband Charlie. Charlie has a Nordic Indy Pass and we both redeemed our Indy Passes at the ticket counter in the Adventure Center located in the Town Square. We skied with our friend Wes, who has a nearby condo so he can ski cross country more often and very far. His passion is going out and skiing marathon distances. When we met up he had already skied 20k, 12 miles. The weather was okay, it was not quite 20 degrees and the sun was trying to hide. It felt and looked like winter. Wes classic skied while Charlie and I skate skied. From the Town Square we skied

over the Corcoran Pond Dam out towards the South End. We followed Wes heading out Snows brookmand ending up back at the Pond before he led us to the North End of the trail system. Women’s Day being held in Bethel, Maine this year. We hope to do more ski marathons too. So many things to do and places to go. There are too few winter days so use them wisely. Get out and play in the snow! Have Fun. .

He engages in childish antics like superimposing tin foil hats on pictures of JBS leaders. As an aside, the late New Hampshire Governor Mel Thomson was not only a member of the JBS but served on its national council.) Back in 2016 while Quinn was a lobbyist for COS, its New Hampshire group sent out an E-mail accusing the JBS of bribing State Senator Kevin Avard, This was a bold faced lie which was exposed by a friend who was receiving unsolicited E-mails from COS.

COS has been involved in other dirty tactics around the nation. In South Dakota, State Senator Mark Willardsen returned a $1,000 donation to COS when he learned that COS was running attack ads against his opponent that were “full of half-truths, innuendos and outright lies.” This may explain why COS leadership have a cozy alliance with Cenk Uygur. Quinn, ostensibly advocating for a limited convention, defended the idea of the need for structural change in the U.S. Constitution. John Adams once quipped that “facts are stubborn things.” If he were around today, he may have added “And so are screen shots:

In Sub-Saharan Mali, just a decade ago a tough French led military force partnered with the central government to fight militant jihadi groups. Yet despite initial success Mali, as well as neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger have seen military coups favoring or backed by Russia. Correspondingly the local rulers in Mali have forced out the UN peacekeepers and the French, thus handing security responsibilities to Russia’s Wagner mercenaries. Moscow’s influence has grown regionally from Mali to Sudan, the Central African Republic and Libya. Following a military coup in July, resourcerich Niger’s new military junta forced France to withdraw its troops. In October the United States cut off $500 million in assistance to the insurgency-plagued Sahel state. Interestingly Niger had been the key to American moves to counter jihadists who have ravaged the Sahel, with the United States building a $100

million military base in the desert city of Agadez to operate offensive drone operations. Africa is again becoming the nexus for United States/Russia confrontation. Chad’s military junta leader was welcomed by Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin; Moscow says it will help Idriss Déby “stabilize” his country. At the same time U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently visited West Africa to offer aid and security assistance to various states. The UN’s Guterres advised, there are two essential elements in fighting against terrorism and violent extremism, “First, our efforts must be anchored in sustainable, inclusive development.” He warned, “Terrorism finds its home in fragility and instability.” Secondly, “our efforts must be anchored in human rights. Terrorism represents a denial of human rights.” Guterres cautioned, “Too often, counter-terrorism measures are misused or have unintended outcomes when put into practice, and lead to human rights abuses… This is a recipe for resentment, deep grievances, and further death and destruction.” Sahel insurgencies thrive in restive regions which nobody is paying attention to until it’s too late. Everything should be talked about. People who don’t agree with Charles Murray should debate him, not shun him. He is good at revealing unpopular truths. He once had a job working for the government, evaluating social programs. He discovered that the “War on Poverty” was not lifting people out of poverty. In fact, programs like welfare perpetuated poverty. He wrote a book about that titled “Losing Ground.” It soon became a bestseller, and influenced presidents from both parties. Welfare

Clinton said, “Murray has done the country a service.” Then Murray wrote “In Pursuit of Happiness and Good Government” -- a book that changed my thinking. He watched Thai government “experts” create what they said would be a “model community.” They gave the village a fishpond, a rice cooperative, a health clinic. But this aid diminished community activities. “They weren’t as happy as they used to be,” says Murray. “I saw what government looks like from Bangkok and how it looks to the villager. It’s the same in the United States.” The United States

has spent $25 trillion (so far) on our War on Poverty. But the poverty rate has stayed about the same. Instead of eliminating poverty, the War created a new “underclass” -- fatherless kids who give birth to other fatherless kids -- generations of families who become dependent on government handouts. Yet the programs keep growing. “Aren’t you upset?” I ask Murray. “I’m deeply depressed,” he says. “We have watched, in our own lifetime, our hopes and dreams turned to smoldering ruins.” Then he smiles and says, “The good news is that old people are habitually too pessimistic.” Charles Murray, an emeritus scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, has interesting ideas. Why shouldn’t they be given the option -- the freedom -- to join a private retirement plan rather than a socialist government system? How about the injustice this causes low-income Americans under the guise that govern-

ment socialism is good for them? For a low-income earner, the Social Security payroll tax takes the only funds that they have available to invest. Per the Federal Reserve Consumer Finance Survey, median wealth of Black families is 15% of the median wealth of white families. Wealth comes from investment, not income. The percentage of Black families owning stock is about 60% of white families. Shouldn’t low-income families be given the option of getting out of the government system and investing privately over a 40-year working life and have the option to build wealth? Why should government be telling these free, private individuals how to manage their retirement savings?

Beyond what this broken system does to individuals, it also hurts the nation in the larger fiscal scheme of things. Social Security accounts for 19% of federal spending. Social Security not only points to fiscal and economic bankruptcy but also to political bankruptcy, as politicians unwilling to tell the hard truths to citizens tell them everything is OK. It’s time for leadership and truth. And it is time to give American citizens freedom to control their own property and their own lives in our free country.
