letter from the editor This issue has a special focus on Gozo – the little island which captivates tourists and has a special place in the heart of so many Maltese people. As an example of what the island has to offer, we are featuring two very different weddings which took place in Gozo. Our very own Jessica tied the knot with her beloved Jakob at a stupendous location on the hill at Ta’ Mena where the ceremony took place. Anthony and Karen held their reception at a traditional venue, the elegant Kempinski San Lawrenz which has one of the most beautiful poolside areas available. Whether you are a foreign couple in search of somewhere exotic, or a Maltese couple looking for a “mini-destination” wedding, we recommend Gozo as the location for your special day. Gozitans, of course, need no encouragement to hold their wedding “on home ground” - anywhere else would be unthinkable! To further promote our sister island, the WD team took the ferry and spent a day at the utterly charming Ta’ Cenc Hotel working on the photo shoot for this October issue. We would like to thank the management and staff for their patience and assistance. Jessica managed to capture the beautiful set-ups just in time before the heavens opened, and we were hit by the thunderstorms which flooded most of Malta in September. We hope you enjoy this issue which is the last one for this year. We thank all of our readers and advertisers who have made WD so successful in the one year since we launched. We will be back in February 2013 with more beautiful weddings for you to enjoy. The Winner of our WD Travels around the World competition was: Mandy-Jo Ebejer who won a photo shoot by Katerina Vella-Ryabkova.

The Bouquet Joseph used cosmos, anemone, ranunuculus, astrantia and trachelium White flowers with touches of black and aubergine tie in with the theme of this wedding - perfect for either autumn or winter!

The Dresses Marquita from WeddingBells chose two dresses: first, a ball bridal gown with tulle and organza layers and beautiful diamante beading on the bust line. The bodice is ruffled in organza. The “red carpet” bridal gown on the previous page is made of lace with flower and crystal details. The halter neckline and see-through skirt add glamour.

The Suit For the groom, this classic tuxedo from Cefai Formal Wear is offset by a dashing waistcoat with modern black and silver checks.

an original touch for this sEASON!

The Make-up Daniela Cassar chose to emphasize Yazmin’s big brown eyes with a smoky eye effect, enhanced with eye liner and mascara for thick lashes. A touch of pink blusher and cream for a shimmery effect give the face a glowing, natural look.

The Hair Marie Claire Lombardi gave our model a classic Audrey Hepburn hairstyle which has been given a modern-day touch with a quiff in the front. The elegant chignon is perfect for someone with very thick, long hair.

Modern Meets

Rustic

The rough hewn, weathered rocks make an impressive backdrop for the ultra chic black and white table setting. The sheer polka dot black runner gives it that extra twist. This tableaux is a great inspiration for those who wish to have an intimate dinner with a number of tables. The result is a beautiful set-up which will leave your guests amazed by the attention to detail.

The Theme We chose the island of Gozo for this issue’s photo shoot because we believe it simply has so much to offer. Whatever your theme, wedding specialists can be found who can make your vision come true. Natural unspoilt rustic beauty together with lovely views will serve as the perfect backdrop for your wedding photos. When coming up with a theme for your wedding, Elaine from Elegant Impressions shows that it is possible to blend modern, streamlined decor with the natural countryside charm of a venue such as the unique, picturesque Ta’ Cenc Hotel in Sannat, Gozo. The enchanting setting of Palazzo Paladino which can be found on the

WD | 24

grounds of Ta’ Cenc is pure magic, with its limestone walls and breathtaking outdoors area. If the weather plays havoc with your plans (as it almost did with our photo shoot!)the reception or sit-down dinner can easily be moved inside. To avoid too much black and being monotonous, the key is to layer different textures and finishes. Matt and shiny, lace, tulle and silk. This is then broken up with various shades of grey. Our model is a young, Maltese natural beauty, Yazmin who convinced her real-life boyfriend Daren to join her in this photo shoot. Together they make an adorable couple, obviously in love as can be seen from their expressions. Joseph from Flower Arts created

table flowers spheres made with fresh dianthus. In the vases he used anthuriums, hydrangea, phlaenopsis orchid and vanda orchid The deco items on the table, also from Flower Arts show different sizes of cube vases and black candelabras to complete the effect. For the cake area (next page) he used hanging glass spheres with candles and fresh flowers to complement the elegant cake server and champagne glasses from Charming Diva. The black and white cake in three tier different ‘box shapes’ and covered in frosting, is the creation of Glorianne from Cuppy Cakes and is a great idea for a couple who are not afraid to be daring and original.

Once Upon a Hill... Jessica Moritz & Jakob Krebs | 4.07.2012

When Jessica, creative director and co-owner of WEDDINGDAY magazine, met Jakob at her first semester of university she would never have imagined he’d be the one she would marry one day. They were mere friends at that time and it wasn’t until a twist of fate made their paths cross again 10 years later that changed everything between them. Jessica had been living in Malta for many years and was on a short Christmas break to see her family in Berlin when the unexpected happened. “Something strange and magical happened that evening when we met again after more than a decade. I reached across the table and patted Jakob’s hand. It was just supposed to be a friendly gesture to something he had said, when I suddenly felt as if a lightning had struck me. I know this sounds strange but right at that moment I knew, this is the man I’m going to marry one day.” Although both were single at the time, it took another year until the two plucked up the courage to meet again. They had stayed in touch throughout this time and talked on skype for hours; soon it was clear that both wanted to be in each other’s life for the long haul. That’s when the dream of a wedding on a hill was born...

“From the beginning Jakob and I knew we would be getting married in Gozo. It is like a second home to me and Jakob also fell in love with this little island.” A year earlier in July 2011 Jakob had proposed on the hill at Ta’ Mena, a place that meant a lot to Jessica. “From that moment on we dreamed of having our ceremony there. But the details were quite difficult to coordinate,” says Jakob. Jessica adds, “We thank God every day we had the professional help of Anna & Marvik from Malta Event Design! Although I work in the wedding industry and know a lot of suppliers, I would never have imagined how much careful planning a wedding entails. They were truly the backbone of our wedding; they helped us with every aspect, from the financial planning, to the creative part and to the realization of our dream.” Jessica and Jakob also knew straight from the start that they wanted a very small and intimate wedding. Most of their family and friends flew in from abroad and spent a week in Gozo. The invitations already gave a glimpse of what was to come. They were custom designed by Alexia Chopping from Boo&Co to hold a DVD slideshow which showed personal photos of the couple intertwined with images of Gozo for a tiny sneak preview. “For our stay in Gozo we rented the amazing farmhouses called The Hamlets by Baron Homes tucked away in a quiet alley in Ghasri. These modern styled farmhouses offered us and our guests all the luxury conveniences. We had an indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzzi, flat screen TV, Internet, BBQ area, cleaning services and air conditioning. It was the perfect place to rest and recharge our batteries during the eventful week. “My bridal gown was from WeddingBells. It was the most wonderful experience! Marquita Kemper and her bridal team are so welcoming and thoughtful. Marquita just knows how to put those special touches on a dress to make you feel like an incredible bride. Grace, her dressmaker, gives you that perfect fit so you are confident and comfortable to walk down the aisle.”

WD | 34

“When I had almost reached the top of the hill, I caught a small glimpse of Jakob and our eyes met for a split of a second. That moment, I felt so much at peace - little tears filled my eyes with happiness and gratitude.”

WD | 36

We have to thank George Borg from Ta’ Mena Estate for setting up the ceremony area on the hill with those breathtaking views across Gozo, Joseph from Flower Arts for the beautiful flower arrangements that just blended into the natural scenery and Anna and Marvik for keeping everything on track on the day.” Jakob recounts: “One of my most memorable moments was driving down the street from Rabat to Ta’ Mena and seeing the white chairs lined up on the hill. When I arrived I heard music coming from above and I knew, this is it now!” As soon as the bride arrived, her sister Sarah began to sing: “We are going to the chapel and we are going to get married...” and all the bridesmaids joined in the song which could be heard by the guests up on the hill. Although the couple had organised a jeep for their guests to be transported, Jessica decided to walk it up. “I just knew I had to walk up this hill, never mind the high heels, dress or dust, as I had my father’s strong arm to lean on. It was one of those experiences I’ll never forget.” “Our wonderful singer Marisa Galea began the official part of the ceremony with the song “Heavenly Day” and I had to take a deep breath and just like the song goes, I was thinking: What a “Heavenly day”, says Jakob. The ceremony was performed by none other than Jakob’s own father who is a Protestant pastor. “It made it all even more personal and intimate, especially since all our family members took an active part in the ceremony.”

Finding a photographer was an easy choice for the couple. They flew in wedding destination photographer Karin Von Voigtlander based in New York City. “I have worked with Karin before and I love her mix of artistic and photojournalistic style, as well as, her attention to detail. We were just so glad to have her,” says Jessica. “I also had my wonderful colleagues Paul Parker and Bruno film the event and they were truly like a fly on the wall.” After the ceremony, most of the guests descended down to the venue and refreshed themselves with fresh stone oven baked foccacia and champagne while the couple took pictures with their family and bridal party. The fabulous set designer of WEDDINGDAY Elaine Zarb from Elegant Impressions surprised the couple with a wonderful set-up on a separate area on the hill that was reserved for photos. “Elaine designed jars with silk and lace ribbons, WD | 38

and among the vines she hung two huge J & J’s (our initials) with a heart made out of wine corks representing the wine hill we got married on. It was a lovely surprise”, enthuses the bride. Jakob had his suit custom made in Berlin but his vest and tie were made by Cefai. All the groomsmen’s tuxedos were also by Cefai Formal Wear. “Joe Cefai was so patient and gave us a fantastic service. Nearly all week before the wedding we would run down to his shop in Gozo with another groomsman who had just arrived from abroad who needed alterations to his suit. Cefai’s turn-around-time and quality truly matches no other.” The bridesmaids were from three different continents so Jessica decided to just give them a colour sample and they would chose the dress themselves. “I didn’t want to put them in a uniform style, especially since my bridesmaids had all different body shapes and were different ages.

My priority was that they feel comfortable and gorgeous and that’s exactly how they looked.” Jessica’s hair and make-up were by her sister Desiree, who is a professional trained theatre and make-up artist in Las Vegas. “I know my sister would have loved to create an up do with lots of intricate detail but I just wanted something simple, a tight bun, because that’s just me. My make-up was so soft and glowing. I loved it! When I saw the result, I truly felt it’s me, but a polished me - no hiding behind too many layers of make-up and hair!” Jessica and Jakob fell in love with the venue for a similar reason, its natural setting: “you have the views from the hill, the many green shrubs, natural Maltese stone walls, fruit trees, and wonderful fresh herbs that scent the air. Once you enter the venue, it’s like its own little world hidden away from the hustle and bustle. We also knew we could transform the reception area to make it uniquely us but at the same time still fitting into the

environment. We really liked to work with the rustic atmosphere, adding some elegance and some modern touches.” “George Borg was extremely cooperative throughout, making suggestions but always listening to what was really important to us. Anna and Marvik really helped us with the concept and how to work with the different areas. They actually measured the entire area and created an amazing floor plan. It was great seeing the set-up on paper before it was even there.” A few days before the wedding Jessica had a whole army of bridesmaids and friends to help her with the last details. “One friend ironed, while another folded the napkins, others cut and glued ribbons and helped with the seating chart. I think we were about 10 girls in one room, working as if we were in a factory, but thank God they were there. I would never have managed without their help.” WD | 39

Eventually, everything came together in the reception and dinner area and you could truly call it a team effort. The dinner was served under the white tent marquee. The first big step was to add light. Being a photographer Jessica knows how important it is to infuse light for the overall atmosphere which also helps greatly in the wedding photographs. “One of my clients had got married at Ta’ Mena and I was intrigued by their wonderful light concept. So I phoned up the groom George Saguna who was so wonderful and agreed to help build up the light concept together with specialist Peter Camilleri. George knew immediately what I was after and I was relieved I could leave this in their very capable hands. Peter and George worked for four days to perfect every little light bulb. When we walked into the venue on our wedding day it just took our breath away!” recounts the couple. Even the infamous windmill on the hill was lit up to be seen in the background when Jakob and Jessica cut the

cake later that evening. Johanna Zammit from Bali Stuff provided the round fairy light balls in the dining area that gave it all a magical touch. She also set up a modern cocktail lounge area near the bar and dance floor, added a candle light installation near the entrance of the marquee and provided the sheer curtains. “She had also made us a personalised wedding sign with our names that we placed at the entry of the venue to greet the guests.” Joseph Baldacchino created stunning table centre pieces made of hydrangea, roses and bougainvillaea and little twigs. “Our guests kept commenting on how beautiful they looked.” Little touches were added with the use of the table mats which Jessica’s sister, Desiree sourced for her. The final impact was made with the custom created menu cards designed exclusively by Concept Barn. “I can’t say enough how wonderful and fast Ediana and her husband produced these. They immediately grasped the idea and delivered. Those

cards really tied in with the entire theme of modern and rustic with a twist of romance.” The dinner was a seated four course meal and also followed the same theme of rustic Mediterranean blended with modern cuisine. “People started coming up to my parents and us to say how amazing the food is. The highlight was the cake and that was no easy feat for the chef. Due to my work as a wedding photographer I’ve tasted literally all different cakes across the country and they were some very delicious ones! So I was even more surprised when I tasted our cake and immediately thought “wow this is the best I ever had’, especially since I did not expect it. George and his team understood exactly what I had in my mind even though I could never somehow translate it into words. It was a mixture of a very moist chocolatey Baci cake with crocant, the chocolate nougat would melt in your mouth but at the same time the crushed nuts and crocant would give it that lovely crunch.”

“We also have to compliment the staff, they were so attentive and professional,” says Jakob. During dinner the couple was surprised by a personalised wedding magazine, which featured funny stories and photos about the couple written by family and friends and all designed and put together by Jessica’s sister Sarah. “It was the most thoughtful wedding present which we can cherish for the rest of our lives and always take out again when we want to reminisce.” In true German tradition there were three speeches, by the bride’s father, the best man and the groom that left not a single dry eye in the house. “After dinner we cut the cake, and opened the dance floor with our first dance. Our fantastic DJ Ronnie Dimech filled the floor with tunes that everyone loved dancing to.” In fact, the bride and groom didn’t leave the dance floor until almost 5am when the sun rose again.

Karen Mizzi & Anthony Spiteri

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

WEDDINGDAY: 28 July 2012

Anthony and Karen met at Sixth Form in Gozo and instantly hit it off as they had both recently just moved to Malta and had a lot in common. “After a while of always being together as friends we started going out and we have been together ever since. This year we have actually been together 7 years!” Every girl dreams of the ultimate romantic proposal, perhaps even featuring something sparkly from Tiffany’s. Well, for Karen, this dream came true. “Anthony proposed while on a holiday in New York where we planned to celebrate the New Year with some friends. He had planned the entire trip, even contacting Tiffany’s via email and finding the perfect ring months before. On the day of the proposal in order to get the ring from Tiffany’s on 5th Avenue without me noticing he asked some of our friends to take me out to lunch while he went to run an ‘errand’. After lunch, we went for a walk in Central Park. It was beautiful, all white, covered with snow. We made it to the Bow Bridge. He then pulled out the turquoise box , bent down on one knee and popped the BIG question, I was speechless.”

WD | 46

“It was wonderful seeing all the things we had been planning for months fall into place.”

For her wedding gown, Karen turned to Pronovias, who have an excellent selection to suit all tastes and figures. “I didn’t really have a particular style in mind. I just figured this was my one chance to truly feel like a princess! When I tried this dress on at Pronovias, I thought that although it looked like a traditional wedding dress it had a modern feel to it too.” The ceremony was celebrated at the Gozo Cathedral which is built within the fortified Citadella and stands at the highest point of Gozo. The couple wanted to stick to tradition, so they chose the bride’s parish church to celebrate the Mass. “One of the reasons we chose the wedding date was because it was close to the local feast of St Mary and so we knew that the cathedral would be beautifully decorated. The flower arrangements were made out of white hydrangea, lilies and roses.” Karen says she was quite calm throughout the morning of the wedding as everything was going to plan. “But the nerves started kicking in on the drive to the church, as I could not believe that the moment we had be planning for the last few months had finally arrived. I had always dreamt of walking down the aisle with my Dad and I am forever grateful that I got the opportunity to fulfil my dream. When I walked in and saw so many family members, friends and Anthony standing there at the altar the nerves quickly turned into excitement and I had to fight back tears of joy!”

DRAMATIC THE VEIL!

Malta is the ideal destination you want your wedding to be set against a historic is the finishing touch backdrop! to make you feel like a BRIDE!

When a Gozitan couple decides to get married, it does not even cross their mind to marry anywhere but home. For Anthony and Karen, the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz was the natural choice as they wanted to cater for an outside sit down dinner followed by an ‘after party’ indoors. “Rita Knowles designed the perfect cake which turned out exactly as we had imagined. We had a 5 tier traditional white cake with beautiful flowers. The floral feature was chosen to complement the bride’s dress. It is a timeless cake.” The three main colours used throughout the wedding were ivory, Tiffany blue and blush pink. “Elaine from Elegant Impressions was really helpful in creating what we had pictured in our minds to truly come to life. Mirrors were also used in some of the features such as the table seating chart and vases on each table. We placed Tiffany blue favour boxes on the table, to resemble the engagement ring box. There was one for each couple with 4 almonds in them. Elaine was a great help throughout the whole wedding planning process and on the day. She helped make the day one that we will definitely cherish forever.” White crisp linen tablecloths and chairs draped in white were given a pop of colour with the Tiffany blue accents throughout the venue. This theme was carried throughout, including the bridesmaids’ dresses. The wrought iron chandeliers lit up by candles gave an elegant timeless touch, while the stylish white sofas scattered throughout the venue gave guests a chance to rest their feet.

A popular trend at weddings is a cocktail bar, and for this, the couple turned to Damian’s cocktails, one of the leading service providers in the wedding industry. The couple chose the modern bar with the glowing top. This can be ordered in any colour of the couple’s choice, and in this case they chose white to match their wedding theme. Damian explains that the couple had complete trust in him and decided to leave the cocktail menu in his hands. “Obviously, we created an interesting and varied menu to satisfy all the guests, which received lots of compliments.” He points out that having a cocktail bar is a symbol of style and fun, where you show your guests you have gone the extra mile to make their experience one to not forget. “A professional cocktail bar is almost a must these days at weddings. It’s becoming part of the whole wedding package; part of our wedding culture. Maltese couples want the best at their weddings, and an organised cocktail bar is very much in demand.”

Your Dream Shoes have arrived

What make weddings so much fun is that each is unique in its own way, reflecting the style of the couple and making a personal statement. As the owner of Photo Booth Malta, Anthony Spiteri obviously had a photo booth at his own wedding. This is a fun trend which has captured weddings by storm - every couple seems to want the photo booth because it breaks the ice and puts the guests into a lively mood. Guests can use the props supplied as well. “We loved seeing all of our friends and family there, and we really appreciated those who had to travel from abroad to make it, say Anthony and Karen.

A chance meeting at a friend’s party was the first time Annabel and Andre saw each other, but it was not until she bumped into him again a few months later that they really managed to speak. “By the end of the night we had exchanged numbers and it progressed from there.” After living in the UK the couple decided to move to Barcelona. It was there that Andre proposed shortly after Annabel’s 30th birthday. “He took me out for a romantic date to the Hotel Florida, at the top of WD | 56

Mount Tibidabo, and popped the question after dinner.” Annabel bought her wedding dress from BCBG Max Azria in Barcelona. “I was looking for something simple and classic. I didn’t want a traditional wedding dress as I felt that it didn’t suit my style and personality. I accessorized it with a short, vintage lace wrap and simple jewellery”. The halter neck dress with its layered pleats suited her slim frame perfectly. Annabel’s black hair was swept back into an elegant chignon and she kept her make-up as natural as possible.

“Having guests coming together to celebrate our special day from different stages of our lives and from over 20 countries made it truly special and unique for us.”

WD | 58

Annabel and Andre chose the historical setting of Villa Bighi after having attended a wedding there. “We immediately loved it for the beauty of the historic architecture and incredible views of the Grand Harbour. Having an international wedding (Andre is Brazilian and we have both lived in the UK for over 10 years) we wanted something which really showed the best Malta has to offer.” Keith Chetcuti from Nexos explained that the advantage of choosing Villa Bighi, is that one can create the atmosphere that one desires. “Annabel wanted a modern look so we used warm general lighting for the main floor area. We opted for a wall wash for the villa’s back facade using only one colour during the reception. For the after party we added more effects so that the villa was changing colour from one song to another.” “We up lit the columns of the wooden canopy and installed fairy lights around the canopy’s perimeter – these always give

a very nice effect. The trees were lit using amber and peacock blue. Finally reddish/magenta lighting was used for the chill out area.” The views of Valletta across the stretch of water under the moonlight, made for an unforgettable sight which was appreciated by foreign and Maltese guests alike. Scattered cushions provided a romantic, chill out area for guests to relax. The highlight of the evening came when fireworks were let off, just above the dramatically-lit venue. The catering by Osbourne Caterers was excellent and the couple was extremely satisfied with their service. The four-tiered cake was made by Annabel’s father, Mr John Attard, and his good friend Tonio Castillo. Ivory ribbons decorated each tier of this simple yet beautiful cake, reflecting the taste of the bride and groom. WD | 59

Simply, Classically... Vintage

Catherine Zammit & Jeremy Borg Grech

WEDDINGDAY: 19 May 2012

Catherine and Jeremy met at a friend’s birthday party, but it almost didn’t happen. “Jeremy told me later that he was not sure whether he felt like going and I ended up being locked up inside my garage for about two hours, so I had already called the birthday girl to tell her I wasn’t going. But then when I finally managed to get out I decided to go anyway since I was all dressed up.” The two clicked immediately and the relationship soon turned serious. The proposal was nothing short of inspired. “Jeremy surprised me by taking me on a para glide powered by a speedboat. In mid-air he told me to look to my left and there I saw a huge banner held by friends, with the words ‘Will you marry me?’ I didn’t answer because I was so gobsmacked! As soon as we landed he proposed again, this time on one knee and with a ‘rock’, and I said ‘yes’. The original proposal was even captured on youtube (you can find the link on our Facebook page). Catherine was lucky, because the first dress she tried on was the one she chose. “I loved it; it was exactly what I wanted. It was in raw silk, simple, classy and regal especially since it was complemented by my Audrey Hepburn hairstyle. The dress is from WeddingBells of course (my sister’s shop). The maid of honour and bridesmaids’ dresses, also from WeddingBells, were made of shantang silk designed by Nicki Macfarlane, the same designer as Kate Middleton’s and they looked stunning. My shoes were from Nine West.”

WD | 66

“It was an intimate wedding with a chilled feel at the same time. Although we wanted a traditional wedding we didn’t want the rigidity which comes with it.”

WD | 68

Catherine arrived in a black vintage car which fit in perfectly with her love of everything classic. “We got married at the Gharghur Parish Church of Saint Bartholomew where the baroque architecture beautifully complemented our theme. Walking down the long aisle (and even just waiting to go in) was the most nerve-wracking moment of my life. I know that sounds terribly cliche! But it true, I was shaking all the way. Some friends told me afterwards that they thought I was going to fall over as my nerves really showed. When the ceremony was over, I finally started to relax.” The brief moment of nerves soon passed as Jeremy saw his lovely bride coming towards him on her father’s arm. The floral centrepieces for the altar and which decorated the pews were made out of delicate gyposphilia and ivory roses.

TRADITION!

hold your wedding ceremony at a beautiful Maltese CHURCH

This couple wanted a small, intimate traditional wedding, so The Villa in Balluta Bay seemed to be the perfect choice. “Since it used to be a private residence, it gives a homely feeling. The venue was beautifully decorated with traditional and also contemporary flowers by the talented Joseph Baldacchino from Flower Arts, which gave it a look of freshness. The catering was excellent, especially our wedding cake which was Victorian. It was stunning with an intricate design and yet very simple,” says Catherine. “For the theme we wanted a traditional, vintage feel with a contemporary element. We both love simplicity, and this theme ran throughout from the dresses to the flower arrangements. With design or fashion we both believe that less is more and the result was stunning! The mix of old and new was both refreshing and nostalgic at the same time.”

The fun part came in the form of the photo booth provided by Anthony Spiteri (Photo Booth Malta), a relatively new trend which has caught on brilliantly with wedding couples. Guests can have fun dressing up, using the props provided and really enjoying themselves, capturing the moment of this special day while livening up the party. “I also decided I wanted something less formal for the ‘after party’, and again Marquita helped me to find just that. It was a flowing Grecian dress for which I let my hair down, and it was perfect for dancing to entertainment by Versatile.” “Our family, friends and the atmosphere helped us to achieve this laid-back feeling. Everybody had a wonderful time and in fact the wedding lasted far longer than we thought. Although it sounds so cliche, it really was the best day of our lives!” Catherine recollects with a smile. For their souvenirs, Catherine and Jeremy decided to “go green”. “We donated money towards planting the trees of a new public garden in Pembroke – as part of the 34U campaign. This way, our souvenir will be enjoyed by many future generations.”

A Personal Touch

Chef Chris Hammett from The Villa explains what it takes to cater for weddings, large and small “At The Villa, we can cater for up to 700 people maximum, and for as little as two people, depending on your preference. The venue is also versatile: there is a massive upstairs room with a large terrace while the downstairs area leading to a terrace is also very large, with private dining rooms, one seating 30 and another seating 14. You can be comfortable no matter how small or large your wedding is. We are a very personal, bespoke company which allows us to cater to our clients’ needs in a way which is fun for us in the kitchen. Lately the trend is for weddings to start around 4pm, with an after party following the dinner or reception. This means you can have different set-ups starting on the terrace with cocktails and then moving onto the main terrace for more socializing and canapes. For standing receptions at The Villa we prefer to offer the ‘Flying Buffet, which means waiters going round with a proper plated selection of items, rather than guests lining up at buffet tables. Catering for a wedding involves a lot of preparation in advance, what is called the mise en place. This starts in the morning of the event with

chopping and preparation – the laying of canapes on freshly toasted bread is done one hour and a half before the wedding. We usually have three or four teams concentrating on different canapes. The plated things are cooked there and then. Sweets are done in house by pastry chefs who are sub-contracted especially for large weddings. The biggest mistake people make is that they want to order too much food. We try to dissuade them, since it’s better to have a bit less with great quality than food going to waste. The Maltese have a big issue about not wanting to lose face because they did not have enough food at their wedding and they start adding items at the last minute; it’s a almost a case of honour, but we manage to convince them not to overdo it. I like to bring the couple in for a tasting where they chose a menu and try it out, especially with fussy people who want specific food. In my experience, every bride wants a completely different wedding – we have catered from an Indian wedding to a Croatian wedding, which ended up with a cake fight in the end! I feel that the Maltese are becoming a bit more adventurous and are opting for themes, which also makes it more interesting for us.”

Sarah Camilleri & Carl Attard

Pale Yellow Accents

WEDDINGDAY: 28 July 2012

Sarah and Carl have been hanging around with the same circle of friends since they were around 16. As she puts it, “the attraction was there, all right, a year later we started dating and the rest is history.” As the relationship became more serious, the idea of getting married came up naturally during several conversations, and after around six years they agreed to seal the deal so it was a mutual decision. “The moment I showed everyone my engagement ring, they all started asking about our wedding plans. Had we set the date? What would the dress be like and so on.” Like any bride, choosing the right dress was one of the most essential decisions WD | 74

for Sarah. “Initially, I saw myself in a big princess like gown, however that idea quickly changed. I must have dragged my mother and sister to around 30 fittings before finding ‘The One’. A smile on all three of our faces confirmed it. I settled on a heart-shaped dress with a ruffled skirt embellished with crystals. I liked the simplicity of the dress as the top part was chic while the skirt made a great statement.” When it came to her hairstyle, Sarah wanted a natural, fresh look but one that looked polished, so she wore her hair down as she always imagined she would, and had very natural make up. Roses and peonies were her choice of flowers for the bouquet and for all the floral arrangements.

“My bridesmaids wore pale yellow chiffon dresses while my two flower girls looked so pretty in ivory silk dresses all designed by Charles and Ron.” Each dress was individually designed to suit each bridesmaid, whether strapless, or with a slip of fabric over one shoulder, or sleeveless. This ensured that the same theme was retained throughout, yet allowed each bridesmaid to retain her personality. This personal touch is guaranteed by Charles and Ron, who are undoubtedly among the top names when it comes to bridal fashion, and who can create whatever designs a bride has in mind. The flower girls’ dresses were everything a little girl could dream of: proper “princess” dresses with a full skirt and petticoats, and flowers on each shoulder. The young girls had yellow flowers intertwined into their long, braided hair, while the bridesmaids wore their hair in different styles according to their taste: low, soft chignons, in a ponytail or loose and flowing. Sarah was all smiles as she posed for photos with her bridal party, who were as excited as she was about this special day.

“We were surrounded by our family and closest people in our lives who were celebrating this special day with us. What more could we ask for?”

Like many little girls, Sarah always imagined getting married, but the details were a bit blurry. “Everyone says that your wedding should be for you, but we both wished for our guests to have a good time as well. As the saying goes, there’s no place like home, so we naturally decided on Carl’s parents’ house in Mosta for the reception and the Mosta Parish church for the ceremony. It was just the atmosphere we wanted.” The amazing lighting and colour was the work of a company which is an expert in this field, Transient Light & Sound. The cake area featured a custommade carpet with their initials, a theme which ran throughout the wedding, including the invitations made by David Mifsud from Repro House, which came out exactly as they had imagined. The styling was left up to Carl’s sister Denise and Aunt Marisa from DenMar who created a beautiful setting. “My theme was pale yellow and gold, so tables in white linen with a yellow motif were scattered with a lovely centrepiece, while lanterns, candles and wicker hearts created a lovely and serene environment. Combined with the stunning floral arrangements, it was like a modern day fairytale. A dance floor was also set up adorned in pink lighting which produced a lovely atmosphere, where we later danced the night away.” Having reliable caterers is a must for any couple, so Sarah and Carl entrusted the job to Catermax who did a great job. “We opted for canapes and assorted food stations. The pastry chef instantly understood what I had in mind for the wedding cake, and exceeded our expectations. It was a pillar type, 4-tiered cake in Baci and almond flavours dressed with ivory fresh flowers.

As night fell, the gazebo was lit up with pale blue and yellow defused lighting, turning it into another magical space. “Our first song was a favourite from our first years of dating, called ‘You are my Destiny’, by Lionel Ritchie which brought back so many good memories. We didn’t have any dance lessons before that, we just winged it.” The music was provided by Tunin Entertainment. Sarah said that their favourite part of the wedding was the after party. “DJ Gianni came along and rocked the house and we partied all night! At 4.30am you could have heard us from a mile away screaming WE WANT MORE!” The photographer was George Scintilla and Cedric Vella was the videographer. Sarah and Carl went to Royal Travel for their honeymoon arrangements. This company specializes in long haul flights and they put together a great package which allowed the couple to travel to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Alaska.

MAKE-OVER

Lara Gatt gets the WEDDINGDAY pampering treatment! Lara Gatt is an 18-year-old accounting student who will be getting married in 2014. “My friend encouraged me to apply for this makeover and I never believed I would be chosen. My hand was trembling when I phoned everyone to tell them, as I hadn’t told my family I had applied. I was so excited, I really wasn’t expecting it.”

The Venue: The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux in Mdina Probably Malta’s most sophisticated boutique hotel, situated in the Silent City, this venue is very popular with foreign couples looking for a historic venue as well as Maltese couples who want the grandeur of the bastions. The majestic palace, with its imposing entrance and beautifully preserved courtyard, was the ideal backdrop for Lara’s photo shoot. The interior, of course, needs no words to describe it, all one has to do is look at the pictures. For an appointment contact: Bernice Bugeja Tel: 21450560 or email weddings@xarapalace.com

Rosemarie’s tip: an up style is ideal when the weather is sticky and humid

THE HAIRSTYLE by Rosemarie Camilleri, HBR Hairdressing, Mgarr When considering Lara’s hair and the gown she would be wearing, Rosemarie Camilleri decided that an up style with hair accessories would definitely suit her. “A ball gown requires a crown up style and Lara’s heart-shaped face can definitely take it. Because of the necklace, I chose small accessories at the back of the hairstyle to keep the look simple. Because she has mid-length hair, I used a beehive underneath to give her more height. An up style always requires the hair to be washed a day before in order to be more manageable. I pinned the waves and added a net to set the style for about half an hour. This is an ideal look for when the weather is sticky and humid, yet it is still a natural soft look for which suits her age. I then used a shine spray so the hair does not frizz and closed it off with hairspray for hold.”

Marija-Helga’s tip: a young bride should be as natural as possible

THE MAKE-UP by Marija-Helga De Battista Zammit Marija-Helga Zammit chose a romantic natural look for Lara. “With her nice features, pale complexion and elongated, green eyes, all I needed was some black pencil eyeliner to bring out the effect of her eyes against her dark hair. I used pink blusher and grey and pink shadow on top of a good base foundation. By contouring several shades I covered any blemishes and enhanced her features. When one has reddish, sensitive skin like Lara’s, it is important to use the right type of concealers. I also recommend a facial a week or more before the wedding, so that the redness goes down. Because of her young age I opted for natural lipstick. I think a young bride should be as natural as possible and not made to look ‘older’.”

THE LOOK! soft hair & natural make-up is ideal for a YOUNG BRIDE!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES – camilleriparismode Rosemary from Camilleriparismode tells us: “Lara likes ballgowns so we wanted to give her something that would recreate a fairytale feel. The dress is light, soft and romantic. We chose a lightweight, ivory-coloured dropped waist ball gown which shows off her slender figure while still having a full-skirt. It is essential that the dress is light and comfortable as above all the bride needs to enjoy her special day. Even though the dress has many layers it is still lightweight due to the use of tulle. We recommend that the choice of fabric in the dress varies according to the time of year of the wedding; a thick fabric is suitable in winter but not in summer and vice versa. As Lara is a young bride, the silk organza floral details with beading tied in perfectly with her overall style. The ruching is very flattering and shows off Lara’s curves in a delicate way. When it came to accessorizing we matched the dress with a beautiful veil with Swarovski-edged beading. It adds a little glitz to the dress while still being subtle. To take the dress from afternoon to evening we added an embellished tulle belt which added instant glamour to the way Lara looked. To finish off, we added a piece of statement jewellery. The handmade Swarovski necklace added true style and sophistication to

Lara’s look, adding a classic edge to the strapless dress. Over all Lara’s bridal look is a mix of classic glamour with youthful style, one that we feel is truly out of the ordinary. Camilleriparismode, 54/56 St. Catherine Street, Rabat, Tel: +356 2010 2030 Email: weddings@camilleriparismode.com LARA’S VERDICT “I feel like I was in a dream. I kept thinking, this is how it’s going to be on my wedding day! The make up is perfect and even my hair. It’s definitely my style. The dress has left me speechless because I love princess style dresses. The whole look was quite a change for me because I don’t usually wear make up so it’s a big difference.” DISCLAIMER: The gown chosen for Lara was used purely for this photo shoot and is still available for purchase. Camilleriparismode assures its clients that all its gowns are exclusive ‘one offs’ and no style is ever repeated.

Advice for thE groom Joseph Cefai gives advice on how to choose the right tuxedo for you.... You may think that all men’s tuxedos all look the same. However for today’s man, we offer new styles every season using different fabrics and designs. We have a wide range of styles in stock, starting from a regular formal tuxedo to a more sophisticated look. You can build your own look, from modern to traditional, by choosing a different shirt, waistcoat and tie and adding it to your favourite tuxedo. For 2013 we have a lightweight sand colour tux with piping on the edge of the collar and lapel, ideal for a summer wedding. Another style for the groom is a 3/4 length coat with a ‘marble effect’ design. The key is to try on several styles and see which suits you best. The most common problem is when the groom has a particular style in mind which is different to that of the bride. In this case, comprising is best.
