letter from the editor The months have flown by since we launched our first issue and the feedback has been nothing short of incredible. But no sooner had we finishing raising our glasses in a toast at our press launch (featured on page 8) then it was time to get to work once again on our May issue. To welcome the season of spring, we are paying tribute to a favourite fairytale, with an Alice in Wonderland-inspired photo shoot styled by our team of experts who go out of their way each time with their imagination and creativity. Once again, we feature a lovely new face, making her debut as a model on WEDDINGDAY: Arabella Hogg, who is half-Maltese, half-Scottish. We hope that she continues to pursue her modelling career with the same success as our February cover girl Bettina Pace, who has gone on to win the Face of Kinnie competition. We know you love to read about weddings, and you will not be disappointed with our five romantic wedding day stories which took place at some of Malta and Gozo’s most beautiful wedding venues. One of our brides is a familiar face to viewers, TV presenter Pauline Agius who shares her special day with us. An important person at any wedding is the father-of-the-bride, so we asked Pauline’s fellow presenters from Ilsien in-Nisa to send us their favourite wedding photos with their Dad, while recalling the words of advice he gave them. In this issue we are also introducing a new concept which is sure to go down well with prospective brides – ‘the bride makeover’. With so many options to choose from, many of you will probably have difficulty deciding what will suit you best on your big day. We have taken this one step further by choosing a real bride-to-be and giving her some expert advice on make-up, hair and her wedding gown, while transforming her into a beautiful bride. Inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland, this enchanting set up was created by our stylist Elaine Zarb in the middle of the unspoilt countryside area of Mizieb. There are many references to the movie in the styling and colour scheme – from the top hat hairpiece, to the flamingos in the wrought iron window pane, clocks, keys, cookies and, of course, the looking glass mirror. Our lovely bride (model Arabella Hogg) walks through a secret gate and stumbles upon a topsy turvy world of clocks and vintage books, colourful cushions and a table laid

out for tea with mismatched vintage tea sets, delicate crockery, delicious cakes and chocolate lollipops used as centrepieces. Vintage carpets and layers of linen tablecloths gave a whimsical feel, while the mismatched seating added to the deliberate quirkiness. Flowers were displayed in teacups and teapots and propped on old books. The very tall and svelte Arabella is wearing a fairytale bridal gown in tulle and satin, with a sweetheart neckline embellished with delicate beading on the bodice. A stunning
satin bow in champagne at the waist give this ballgown a truly magical touch. The fascinator in the form of a top hat adds that final perfect detail to this gown. The decor also featured a tea bar which not only displayed the cake with its very ornate details, but also served as a station from where guests can sample the various teas. Signs written out in delicate calligraphy were used for the names of the tea, and their ingredients. Little lace bags were used for the guests to take some tea home as party favours.

The unique setting of Ta’ Cenc hotel in Gozo was the venue chosen by this couple for their wedding ceremony and reception. “Ever since we saw the view at Kantra we always knew that when we got married, it would be here. The manager David Xerri took us to see Palazzo Palina within the hotel grounds and we immediately decided that this would be the perfect place.” The hotel took care of the lighting at the venue with a little bit of help from their creative photographer George Saguna who added an additional touch with lanterns and fairy lights. “The staff at the hotel was always available and extremely helpful when it came to settling all the details. After discussing possible menus with David Xerri, we altered them to our taste and the staff was very obliging. On the day of the wedding, the staff was very attentive and made everyone feel so welcome. It was the perfect place to celebrate our special day,” says Tanya. The cake was also made by the pastry chef at Ta’ Cenc. In keeping with the whole theme of the wedding, they wanted something simple, combining the vivid summer colours and flowers which they had chosen for their theme. After discussing this with the pastry chef they left it in his hands.

Owen and Tania met at their local bar through some mutual friends. As they got to know one another better, they realized there was something more to their relationship than mere friendship. “On our fifth anniversary we celebrated by taking a nice long walk and having a picnic at Ghajn Tuffieha. Owen was the one who proposed, surprising me when he asked me to marry him and then placing the beautiful ring he had designed himself and made just for me on my finger. He explained that he wanted the ring to be a certain shape to reflect my eyes which was the first thing he had fallen in love with.” The gorgeous ring was handmade by Il-Gojjell Jewellers who specialise in creating original, madeto-order gold jewellery according to the customer’s design . This family-run business is unique because the owners are one of the few real goldsmiths in Malta who also have their own workshop. When it came to their wedding, the couple wanted their guests to feel relaxed and that became their theme. Moving away from the idea of the traditional large Maltese wedding, they invited 85 of their closest family and friends to help them celebrate. “We believe that every detail that went into making our day was simple yet beautiful. We had an outdoor ceremony and a sit down meal which were both held at the Palazzo Palina, so the guests only had one place to travel to. The ceremony was very personal and warm with our loved ones standing around us as we exchanged the vows which we had written ourselves.”

The wedding party consisted of a maid of honour and best man who were also the witnesses, and three nieces and a nephew who took the roles of flower girls and pageboy. Contrary to the formality of most Maltese weddings, Tanya and Owen decided that they wanted everyone to feel comfortable on a warm July evening, so they asked the men not to wear ties or jackets. In keeping with the relaxed theme, the groom wore flip flops as did most of the guests. “We added a personal touch to our wedding by having Sail Away by David Gray sung as the bride’s mother and father walked her down the aisle, placing pictures of us at different stages of our relationship with a personal note on each table and having a kids’ table full of activities to occupy them while the adults enjoyed the evening. Our guest book was a photo album which we had put together showing pictures from when we first started dating to the day we got engaged.”

The original touches were sprinkled throughout this wedding with innovative ideas such as the bride painting her toe nails blue for her ‘something blue’. In keeping with the informality of the occasion, Tanya’s dress was comfortable and flowing in a Greek goddess style. “I had already chosen a dress and when I went back the next week to show it to my sister, the sales person said that a dress had come in that day and she thought that I would like it. I tried that one on and there was no question that it was THE one as it was exactly what I was envisioning.” Their first dance as husband and wife was to the song Green Eyes by Coldplay.

A few years before their wedding, even before they were engaged, Ariela imagined that if she ever got married it would be in Malta, even though she had never set foot on the island, but had only seen photos. “During our first visit to Malta in September 2009, David and I finally saw the place with our own eyes. We looked at each other and we both knew that this was it. We could not wait to tell our family and friends about it. We told them in a very creative manner: nearly six months before the wedding we sent out save-the-date cards to the guests. Instead of sending traditional cards we had made a CD containing a power point presentation revealing the date of our wedding and the location with many beautiful pictures of Malta, the unique Xara Palace where we would have our pre-dinner drinks, and the Mdina Cathedral. Everyone was very excited when they received the announcement.”

This Dutch couple met in high school, in math class, and have been high school sweethearts ever since. David proposed during a holiday in Milan, popping the question unexpectedly during dinner at a cosy Italian trattoria. “We always knew that if we were to tie the knot, we would do that abroad – i.e. not in the Netherlands.
Therefore we chose to have a destination wedding. Most people automatically think this means a beach wedding, but not us. We wanted to have a unique and classical setting and we wanted to get legally married abroad, rather than a (fake) wedding celebration abroad after already being married. We knew that Malta is one of the places in Europe
where non-residents and non-nationals could legally get married.” When they visited the island for the first time to do their “research”, they were amazed by the island’s rich history, unique culture and above all the warmth of the Maltese people. “We knew that Malta would form the perfect backdrop for our wedding day.”

They chose ‘contemporary chic’ as their theme, with white orchids and the turquoise colour as a recurrent accent in such details as the ribbons on the cake boxes, the menus, the name cards on the tables and the wedding invitations. Ariela bought her classic, taffeta silk dress from the Netherlands. She loved the simple, figure-hugging silhouette, and the touch of sparkle provided by the Swarovski crystals and beading. The entire wedding party flew in from various parts of the world to be with Ariela and David on their special day. “Our parents even flew in from the tropical island of Curacao (formerly known as the Netherlands Antilles). Nearly two years later, our guests are still buzzing about our wedding day in Malta! In fact, some are even proposing to go back to Malta with us to celebrate our five year wedding anniversary.” The wedding day itself started with pre-wedding drinks at the exquisite and elegant boutique hotel, the Xara Palace in Mdina. The guests and the groom were on the terrace enjoying the view over Malta from Mdina. While they were having drinks and a few canapes upstairs, the bride was getting ready downstairs in one of the hotel rooms. “We chose this venue for drinks to ensure that all the guests would be on time for the church ceremony at the Mdina Cathedral and above all to amaze our guests with the stunning view from the terrace.” After the drinks the guests and the groom headed to St Paul’s Cathedral. The bride arrived minutes later accompanied by her father and the ring bearer (the bride’s niece Agneetah) in a white

“All of our guests flew in especially from abroad to celebrate this unforgettable day with us on the beautiful and scenic island of Malta. The fact that they did their best to witness us saying our wedding vows made us feel really special and loved. We could literally feel the love!”
Beauford. The short trip from the Xara Palace to the cathedral was incredible, with tourists and locals waving at the car and calling out their good wishes to the bride. “I felt like a princess. My ten-year-old niece felt like one too as she waved back at the crowd.” They chose St. Paul’s Cathedral for the ceremony because it is very dear to them. “The first time we set foot in the cathedral, we asked whether one could actually get married in there. We were told that there is a waiting list and we would have to speak to the Archpriest. We could not believe it when he confirmed that the date we had in mind was available. Fr Savio Vella performed the ceremony.” The wedding consisted of a delicious four-course meal at yet another historic palazzo venue. A DJ from the Netherlands gave them the right mixture of soft background music during the dinner and great dance music during the party, ensuring that the guests danced the night away. The wedding was captured on tape by videographer Jonathan Grech, who works very unobtrusively and ensures that the couple enjoys their day while making sure that the special moments can be re-lived later on, when viewing the video. The wedding cake was a two tiered cake in bacio chocolate, decorated with white icing in the intricate design Cornelli lace. What was special about the cake is that the two tiers were separated by a glass bowl containing beautiful fresh white orchids. “We gave each guest a box with a piece of cake and perlini as a souvenir at the end of evening”.

Looking back, the couple says they thoroughly enjoyed the wedding preparations. “We visited Malta twice prior to the wedding to make the arrangements. Sometimes we joke and say to each other that we temporarily became travel agents. For our 50 guests, we arranged the airport transfers, accommodation and transport for the day of the wedding. We even made hand-outs with things that our guests could do and see in Malta!” “Everything went incredibly well on our wedding day. We believe that the whole Malta experience was meant to be. A special thanks goes to our parents: Jasmin Stoffer-Rojer and Telemaque Stoffer and Hazel Gomes and Philip Gomes for their support and unconditional love.”

Gozo is always a beautiful place to get married, and undoubtedly, Ta’ Frenc is one of the most sought-after venues on our sister island. “We always wanted a place like Ta’ Frenc because everything about it is romantic: the ambience, the nice atmosphere, exquisite mouth-watering food and excellent service,” says Maria. “I have known Mary Grace, the owner’s wife, for a long time as she is a colleague and we are really good friends, so Malcolm and I were determined to have our wedding reception there. She was a great help, not only regarding the actual venue and the catering but in everything I asked for. I was satisfied with everything from the food, drinks and cocktails to the whole way the restaurant was set up.”
Maria has always had her heart set on the perfect cake, so she surfed the web for what she had in mind. “I always wanted fresh flowers on the cake, so together with the florist, Mary Grace we came up with a cake that was decorated with orchids, a purple ribbon and gold butterflies to match the colours chosen for the bridesmaids.” Maria tells us the story of how she met Malcolm. “I used to work part time in a bar and Malcolm’s family and friends threw a party for him there. That is how we met - he introduced himself and was friendly from the start. Towards the end of the party, he came behind the bar and asked me out. I agreed because I wanted to get to know him better, so we started to meet up and after a few
dates we became a couple.” Maria and Malcolm went on to have a daughter together, whom they called Niamh, so when they decided to get married, there was no conventional proposal. “We had already been living together for a while so when she was nearly three and we were settled in our flat, we both decided it was time to tie the knot.”

The theme for this wedding was butterflies, which Maria loves, so she included them in every aspect of the event, from the cake to the table decorations to the invitations which were designed by Boo & Co. Alexia Chopping from Boo & Co specializes in original hand-made wedding invitations and souvenirs which are made to order. Alexia remembers this wedding well because of the original nature of the invites, which featured a simple quote, a delicate swirling flower, and of course, butterflies. The bride had some very innovative ideas, “Instead of a guest book, I came up with the idea of having a tree. Our guests were given cards to write their wishes for us and we asked them to hang them up on the tree with a gold peg.” Like many brides, Maria spent a long time searching for the perfect wedding dress. “I always wanted a figure-hugging dress with some crystals and beads, but not too many. First I went to try the dresses on with three of my friends while my mother kindly agreed to take care of my daughter. When I finally chose my dress I was with my dressmaker Yvonne Attard who is a very close friend of mine. She also helped me find the perfect silver veil made out of French lace to match the silver crystals and beading on the dress. Yvonne also came with me to choose the tiara and jewellery.” Niamh was involved in the wedding too, with a dress sewn by Yvonne, and wearing a pair of wings which Maria borrowed from a friend. The bridesmaids’ headpieces and that of the flower girl were handmade by another good friend, Doris Bugeja.

Maria and Paul used to work in the same office, but only got together after she left that job. After their relationship turned serious, Paul asked her to marry him in a very casual and relaxed proposal while they were on their way to lunch. As an actress with an outgoing personality, it is understandable that Maria wanted her wedding to be fun. Their springtime wedding was perfect for an outdoor venue. “We chose it because the area outside is just so beautiful, and since we had an afternoon Mass we were able to enjoy the venue to the full, with all different kinds of lighting for brilliant photos.” Every wedding is different because it reflects the couple’s personality, and in this case, Maria, who is so exuberant, made sure that everyone was at ease. Her bridesmaids gathered at her house and helped her to get dressed with lots of laughter and giggles. As for her dress, “I wasn’t looking for something super original in my wedding dress. I just wanted something that would bring out the best in me. I knew it was the dress because when I tried the other dresses my reaction was, I really like this, but. When I

tried on my dress I was just so sure…and everything else I tried after that didn’t make me forget that dress.” Maria’s tight-fighting, strapless dress suited her figure like a glove and the flowing skirt gave it a romantic feel. She kept her hair quite natural, with soft curls and a simple headband decorated with tiny crystals. Her make-up was also kept quite natural, to suit her down-to-earth personality. She carried a bouquet made of longstemmed orchids. The bridesmaids’ dresses which were made by dressmaker Doris Cucciardi were in a teal colour which suited the girls’ dark hair and eyes. The groom and the ushers were elegant in their traditional black tails, cream-coloured waistcoats and cream cravats. Maria arrived at the St. Anne’s church in Zebbiegh in a silver-coloured vintage car to find friends and family waiting for her in the late afternoon of a beautiful spring day. After the Mass, the weather was mild enough for the guests to gather outside and enjoy the reception at the old castello in Wardija. When they arrived at the venue, the couple took time to pose with the rest of the bridal party for a few fun photos as the sun was setting. WD | 60

Small details reflected the couple’s personalities, such as the cake topper. “We tried to find something that would really show what we are like. It shows the groom sprawled in front of a TV set while the bride is trying to get his attention.” If the sombre atmosphere in Church was what you would expect from a traditional Maltese wedding, the celebration was turned up a notch once the reception got under way. What really made this wedding so much fun was the band, The Residents, which provided the music at the reception and got everyone on their feet to dance. The Residents are managed exclusively by Tunin’ Entertainment. As many of Maria and Paul’s friends are also in theatre and the arts, they were only too willing to let their hair down and party the night away to popular, well-known tunes. Everyone had a great time as can be seen in the photos, with the fun-loving bride having the time of her life as she danced with her new husband and happily posed with her guests.

Pauline and Cris were first introduced to each other in 2003, during her sister-in-law’s hen night. “Cris had just ended a relationship and I was on a break from another relationship. We clicked instantly and decided to head out of the bar and chat. It was an instant head over heels feeling and later I learned that we both couldn’t sleep that night, thinking separately about the chemistry we had just experienced. Even though we hit it off very well, unfortunately, it all ended after just three weeks and we both went our separate ways.” Four years down the line, destiny decreed that they would meet again and by this time both were single and healed from their past relationships. “This time we realized our relationship was there TO STAY and TO KEEP which lead TO HAVE and TO HOLD,” Pauline says quoting the well-known wedding vows.

It was Cris who proposed marriage during a stay in their favourite hotel in Gozo. The proposal had all the right, romantic ingredients, as Pauline describes the scene in her inimitable, lively fashion: “It was during sunset, on the balcony, just before we went out for dinner at our favourite restaurant. It was so romantic and it came as quite a surprise. He didn’t look tense at all but he was so emotional right after I said yes…which was five minutes later after I repeated ‘are you serious?’ for about 25 times!” Pauline had a difficult time choosing her wedding dress because she admits she was falling in love with every dress she put on. “I was only trying on the ones which were right for my frame and figure but I just couldn’t make up my mind as there were so many which fit like a glove. When I went to Wedding Bells for the first time, I met Marquita Kemper; I choose my three favourite ones with her guidance and I started trying them on. I still recall her asking me ‘which one would you like to try on first?’ and I said ‘this one’ pointing at THE ONE. I tried it on and that was it. I didn’t even want to try on the other two I had chosen. A week later I decided to ask the opinion of my friend, stylist Luke Engerer so I took him with me all the way back to Marquita and tried it on again. The minute he saw me in it, he told me ‘Pauline you look gorgeous, this is so your dress’. I paid the deposit and secured my dress. Luke also helped me chose the wedding shoes, hair piece, veil and everything needed to give me that complete look. I’m so glad I took his advice.” The beautiful Mass was celebrated by Fr Karm Debattista at St. Mary’s Parish Church (Old Church) in Birkirkara. The couple chose Hilton Malta for their venue and they were so confident that they would get excellent service that they left
everything up to them. “We couldn’t ask for anyone else other than Executive Chef Joe Vella to take care of our catering. We booked everything one year in advance and a week before our wedding we didn’t even have a clue which items were going to be served during our reception. We were so relaxed about the catering because it was in perfect hands that it was the chef himself who called us a week before, jokingly asking ‘Are you still getting married or is the wedding off?’” Days, weeks and months after the wedding they kept meeting people constantly telling them what a great wedding it was, but the highlight was the exquisite food prepared by Joe. “He made it all so special and different from any other party food. It was one mouth-watering item after another which made it difficult for everyone to choose their favourite. We were very pleased with our choice.” The reception started at The Gazebo, near Hilton’s fresh water pool and continued at Portomaso Suite overlooking the yacht marina. The Hilton also took care of the special lighting for the reception. Pauline decided to engage someone help her with the decoration, “so we met with the most patient event organiser I have ever met who dedicated her time and energy to set up two different decorating themes, one for outside and another for the inside venue. We both can confirm that Marie Friggieri Choquet from Once Upon a Wedding was a blessing and she made the venue look like a dream. We are so pleased we chose her to cater for all the wedding decorations including the cake. In fact, the cake was made by the Hilton’s pastry chef Mario Mallia and decorated by Marie. Cris was in charge of the design of the cake.”
Considering Pauline’s personality it’s no surprise that she is in love with bright colours, which is why she chose fuschia for her theme. Thankfully, she had no objections from the groom, however she had different reactions from family members especially from her brother-in-law who was utterly shocked when he went for his fitting just three days before the wedding to find that the cravat was pink. “Now, after seeing the photos, everyone likes how they look, including him. I had dreamt of this colour since the day Cris proposed. I was 100% sure of it and I wanted the tiny details to be in that colour.” The lovely wedding invitations, designed by Cris himself were printed at Best Print – Qrendi. “We wanted something plain with a modern finish. So Cris started by designing an outline of a heart, then later I added a ‘barcode style’ side strip with various shades of fuschia and grey tones”. Their wedding rings came from the Chimento range at Victor Azzopardi Jewellers. “Mine is a mix of rose and white gold with a full ring of diamonds and Cris’s is custom made in white gold with just a thin line of rose gold.”
“From a deep perspective…OUR fairytale finally came true and destiny proved us right. From a cheeky/funny point of view…. The date! 9.10.11 so from now on, I can easily remember my anniversary and also how many years I have been married by a simple sum.”

“Cris was a constant support, my rock and we were both happy that everyone could see the details on our special day. Cris was a very hands-on groom who wanted to be involved with the wedding. I am so blessed to have his support and patience. He is quite a perfectionist so I could easily rely on him. We started planning only one year in advance but we took care of every little detail from something as tiny as confetti to decisions on a much bigger scale. On the day, he was very emotional during our vows but after that he had stars in his eyes all day. I had never seen him that happy before.” Pauline was also very grateful to be surrounded by the people she has relied on for the past few years in her television career. “These friends made me so relaxed on the day and I could enjoy my wedding to the full. Last but not least, we thank both our families for all the support throughout the preparations and on the day.”

Thankfully I’m spoiled in the right ways and I’m lucky to have had the best upbringing a parent could give to a child. Riding with my dad to Mass and walking up the aisle made me feel lucky, grateful and so blessed. But my most emotional moment on my wedding day was the dance with dad to the voice of Ivan Grech from Wintermoods singing live ‘Everyday song’, an emotional dance I will cherish FOREVER… I love you Daddy xxx
My father can actually tell whether I’m happy, stressed or sad, no questions asked. We have very similar characters and are always ready for a good laugh, a party or even better a wedding celebration, and we tend to drift away from the rest of the chatty crowd and dance the evening away picking on each other and cracking jokes. This picture speaks for itself.. while my mouth is full of cake I still won’t miss a moment where I can kiss my father, tell him how much I love him and thank him for all the positivity he filled me with. Claire Agius Ordway with her father Harry on 22 May 1999. Sadly, Mr Agius Ordway passed away last year. One of the clearest memories I have with my Dad on my wedding day is on our way to church. I felt my heart breaking to bits as I could tell that he was very sad that I was leaving home. I wanted to stop everything and reassure him I wanted to stay with him forever, but then he made me laugh as we were walking down the aisle. He kept whispering to me ‘why do I have to smile at Robert (my husband), when he is taking you away from me?’. And he was serious about it, even though he loved my husband like his own son, he would have gladly punched him at that moment. He just felt he had to say it; that was my father. I felt proud and honoured to be his daughter. He loved me so much.

So being on his arm, walking up the cobbled pathway to the castle¹s chapel in the Dolomites and being absorbed by the magnitude of the surrounding natural beauty, didn’t require any words to express each other’s feelings. We were both taken by this beauty and this knowledge of each other as a feeling of pure gratitude settled into my heart.

make-over We received an overwhelming number of requests from brides-to-be who wished to be chosen for our first makeover feature. The lucky young woman who was chosen is Charmaine Farrugia. THE CONSULTATION The beautifully elegant Pronovias shop in Gzira, sole agents for this Spanish brand, is the venue for our transformation of Charmaine from a school teacher to a lovely bride. At her first appointment, she is taken through the various styles available with the aid of a digital book. All dresses are one offs, and once a bride buys a dress from Pronovias, it is removed from the catologue. The shop offers the possibility of alterations two sizes up and two sizes down, or the dress can be specifically ordered made-to-measure. The sales staff encourage Charmaine to be open to new ideas when choosing her dress, as once they start trying on dresses, brides often end up choosing something completely different to what they had originally wanted. The staff also say that it is important to not be in a rush when shopping for your gown. THE MAKE-UP Marija-Helga explains that Charmaine’s dark complexion requires special attention. “What a lot of dark-skinned women don’t realize is that they can take a lot of colour, but they are often afraid to use it. They can use green, blue, pink, purple, as long as they do not exaggerate. I would stay away from browns, as they will make her eyes look smaller, so I suggest we go for greens, with pink and pearl shadings which have a hint of glitter. I would recommend that Charmaine does her trial make-up as close to the wedding as possible because she tans so quickly. A bride should take care of her skin throughout the year, keeping it clean, doing regular facials and using sun block.” Marija Helga insists that a good foundation base, even on dark skin, is a must for a bride to give the face a smooth, even look and so that the make-up will hold for an entire day or evening. Loose powder is then applied to lock in the foundation. The lipstick should be a natural colour, with a lip liner used in the same colour of the lipstick. With Charmaine’s almond eyes Marija Helga suggests eyeliner which is smudged for a smoky eye look. She does not agree with false eyelashes for a bride as they look too fake. A white primer is used instead before the mascara is
THE HAIR Dorianne Borg, our hairstylist has taken a good look at the shape of Charmaine’s face, and feels that a loose bun and soft curls to one side would be the most suitable style. “For a summer wedding, I advise brides to do an up style because otherwise, by the end of the wedding, it won’t look good. The important thing is to wash the hair a couple of days before your appointment, as if it’s too clean an upstyle won’t hold”. After applying some styling mousse, Charmaine blow dries the hair slightly so that the curls will be better defined. Using curling tongs, she makes sure to retain some volume so the hair isn’t flattened as Charmaine’s hair is quite thin. Dorianne stresses how important it is for the bride to take proper care of her hair in the months leading up the wedding, with regular trims and treatments. She should also eat properly and not stress too much as all this affects the texture of the hair. Dorianne uses two different types of hairspray, one to help keep the hair in place as she works, and the other, with a strong hold, for when the hairstyle is finished.

THE DRESS Sales assistant Marisa Moore tells us, “Charmaine’s tall, slim figure means she can wear almost anything, so we chose a fun dress for her. As she is getting married in summer, we recommend a strapless chiffon dress for comfort. The top is ruched, and from the waist downwards it flows into large frills. On one side it has a beaded flower which is repeated again in the hair band we chose for her. Our dresses all have inbuilt bras so the fit is perfect.”
And the verdict? Charmaine says, “I would never have gone for green eye shadow because I don’t experiment that much with make-up, so I’m surprised that it suits me so much. The hair is amazing and this style really makes me look like I have a lot of hair. As for this dress, it was not something which I would have chosen for myself, because on the hanger it looked too fussy and I wanted something simple. But when I put it on, I loved it!”
Prepare for Your Marriage Preparing for your wedding is no joke. Especially for those who go for elaborate and expensive concoctions. In short, weddings are stressful events that can have quite an impact on the relationship in the immediate and long terms. It is actually quite easy to overlook the stress. Especially for women, who often romanticise weddings and mistake it for the marriage. There’s actually no correlation between the cost or elaboration of the wedding and the strength of the marriage. Yet, many people still spend thousands on a wedding, take out loans, go on unaffordable honeymoons, get the most expensive dresses, while having house and car loans to pay back too. The aftermath can be unpleasant, stressful, and will inevitably lead to conflicts. The most dangerous aspect is not this though. It is the alienation which the wedding preparations can cause from the relationship itself, as well as from one’s own personal priorities. In Malta, where courtship has generally become too long, wedding preparations often preclude the relationship and partners find themselves talking only about the wedding every time they meet. Because of the excitement, the partners may not be focusing on learning about each other, on expressing and clarifying their expectations of marriage, on learning how to love each other in a way the other person understands. Upon deciding on the date, many couples actually stop spending money on having a good time together, on going out and having fun, on having holidays. This is sowing the seed of eventual boredom and frustration. Remember, the wedding is not the marriage. The wedding is simply a celebration and in no way reflects the quality of the eventual marriage. Be careful on how much you spend. Ideally you spend from the money you save and have. Keep in mind the consequences, the loans and the expenses. Parents often interfere and pay for expensive weddings for their children. I think it makes more sense to use the money to cut down their home loan. Prepare for a wedding for yourselves and not for your parents, or anyone else. A wedding that you will remember for the joy and meaningfulness and not for its lavishness. You don’t owe your wedding to anyone; its your personal and relational celebration. Keep yourself and your partner in the formula of every decision you make and ask, “how is this going to affect us and our relationship?” Involve each other in every decision you make no matter how minor it may seem. Don’t go for anything you don’t agree on. Slot in times in which you talk about the wedding preparation and stick to them. Outside those times make sure you prepare for the marriage that is to come. Discuss your expectations, discover each other, talk about anything from likes and dislikes, to family history, deepest feelings – pleasant or unpleasant, your hopes, your views, attitudes, work, leisure, philosophical views on life. Talk about death, pain, sorrow and loss as much as you do about happiness, love, and

sexual pleasure. This inevitably needs time. Spend time together. Not on Facebook, on chatlines, or the internet but physically together. When you go out turn your mobiles off, they are a distraction to the relationship. Hold hands, look into each others’ eyes. All this will help you create a functional routine that will eventually distinguish you from couples whose marriage will fail. Wedding preparation often comes with home preparation. This can rob you of the time you spend together. Make sure you don’t let bathrooms, curtains, sofas, beds and kitchens distract you from your relationship. Make sure you make choices and decisions together and always consult with each other.
