The new Republic of South Sudan The referendum held in the second week in January delivered the expected overwhelming decision by southerners to declare independence and found a new state, which is to be known as the Republic of South Sudan. The new state will be inaugurated on 9th July. The good news is that the success of the election process has created an atmosphere of confidence and goodwill and a sense of euphoria. The struggle to make the independence work is now beginning, and many positive steps have already been taken. However, the new state and its leaders face major issues, including (among many others) the task of resolving the north/south boundaries, violent conflicts in several regions and the ownership of mineral and oil wealth.

The Future of the Episcopal Church of Sudan The Episcopal Church in Sudan [ECS] will not split into two following independence but will remain as one body. An ECS statement of 11th February says that “the Episcopal Church of the Sudan will remain as one united church as part of the 80 million worldwide Anglican Communion. The church is one body; God has no borders. We will not abandon each other regardless of the political/ geographical boundaries.”

As the Poole—Wau Link develops we aim to highlight and record issues in Wau Diocese for prayer and celebration. The Link offers us a chance--however small----to take a part in the establishing of the new nation.

Deanery representatives still needed We are still in need of people in each of the churches in the Deanery to act as „contact people‟ or representatives. At present the main job would simply be to receive posters and e-mails in order to get word around. Please contact us if you would be able to consider this in your parish.
