CURRENT SITUATION IN SOUTH SUDAN and WAU Despite various peace initiatives, fighting has tragically continued in South Sudan. There have been incidents in or near Wau, but mostly Wau continues to be one of the peaceful areas. There has been fighting in some parts of Warrap State, often related to cattle-raiding. President Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar signed a peace deal on 9th May but it is regarded as fragile. Despite the seriousness of the current situation, much of the country continues to exist normally, with the conflict seriously felt in about 30% of its area. Education, food security and healthcare problems that have plagued South Sudan still need just as much attention as in the past. One of the consequences of the recent fighting is that in many areas people fled their homes at the time crops should have been planted. As this didn’t happen the UN believes that over 7 million people may be hungry by August.

PRAYING FOR SOUTH SUDAN The Archbishop of Canterbury has urged Christians to pray for the divided nation, saying that "We must be battering the gates of heaven in prayer .... as we pray we are engaging with God in the struggle against human evil". After viewing the destruction of Bor, Archbishop Justin said "I see God in a Church that is mobilised against despair in South Sudan when they could have just rolled over and said 'What can we do?'. On the contrary, they are leading the struggle against violence." If you are not on our prayer mailing list and would like to be please contact Val Wilson at wilsonweb72@gmail.com or 01202--747712

EDUCATION NEWS Education is one of our success stories... Visit of Stephen Lubari. Stephen is Head of Education in the Episcopal Church of South Sudan and the Sudan. He visited Holy Angels Church on 15th May and has provided teacher training materials that we may be able to use in Wau. Good news is that we now have an ongoing relationship with Stephen which we hope will be very constructive. Baden-Powell CE VC Junior School worked this term on the UNICEF Rights of the Child. They used Wau’s Sunday Basic School as a real example in a School Assembly and followed up with a “semi non-uniform day”, donating materials for Sunday Basic School. Lilliput CE VC First School had an RE Focus Day on Thursday 15th May, Christian Aid Week, with the theme ‘Blessed are the Peacemakers’, focussing on South Sudan. Activities included building shelters, poetry and story telling, cooking and dancing. Year 1 all came to church to make Peace Gardens with Church members, and to end there was worship outside with African Drumming. Some of our parish Wau Link Partners attended. Talbot Heath School wish to support girls’ education in Wau and have uniforms to send over. At the moment we are investigating ways to send things to Wau including school materials and uniforms. Baden-Powell School are offering to raise money to pay for shipping. Longfleet CE have raised funds for a school toilet in Piantok.
