Are you New to the Area? We invite you to stop in our office or give us a call! We would love the opportunity to meet you and let you know what we offer. We have many classes, activities, programs and leagues for all ages. Welcome to the neighborhood and we look forward to meeting you!

Greetings from Shelly Strasser

Director of Recreation & Community Services Greetings residents of West Allis, West Milwaukee and surrounding friends - We welcome you to your Winter/Spring 2020 Activity Guide. Did you know that most research out there shows less than 10% of people that make a New Year Resolution actually keep it? We don’t want you to fall in the trap of the 90%. In an effort to achieve yearly success, your WAWM RCS team sets daily, weekly and monthly goals. We hope you will join us this year and try doing the same. We offer a number of classes and programs that can help with your overall wellness and being healthy in all areas of your life. We encourage you to be the best version of you by: • Finding a class or program that speaks to you, motivates you, or challenges you. • Reading about all the wonderful programs we have to offer the community. • Joining a group, club or program to get and stay connected. While navigating the challenges that winter months try to throw at us, your WAWM RCS team is here to encourage and support you to get out of hibernation and beat the winter blues. Don’t forget while you are out and adventuring, to take a trip past your new Recreation and Community Services Center to see the construction progress. We hope you will take the new year as a new opportunity to start again, try something new or different, and position yourself for a successful year of you. Yours in recreation, Shelly Strasser and Team

AQUATICS

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO All children must be at least 4 years of age to attend lessons on their own and MUST meet the minimum height requirement for each specific pool measured from the bottom of your child’s feet to their chin. Parent & Child classes are exempt from the height requirement.

Class length for all American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” lessons will be 50 minutes, except Semi-Private lessons which are 30 minutes.

• Frank Lloyd Wright Intermediate - 36 inches chin to toes • Nathan Hale High School - 38 inches chin to toes

Individuals must be toilet trained in order to enroll in all programs. No swim diapers allowed.

Participants must pass all skills to move to the next level.

If you have any questions regarding swim level classification, contact Dan Steenrod at 414-604-4951.

Swim goggles are recommended for Levels 3-6.

Water and air temperature are regulated by the District’s Facilities & Operations Department, not the WAWM RCS Department. They make every attempt to maintain a pool temperature of 82 degrees.

SAFETY FIRST - POOL REGULATIONS Per state code, all swimmers must thoroughly rinse off in the shower before entering the pool. Swim caps are required of all swimmers whose hair is long or controlled by hair spray or oil. Caps are sold at the pool for $2. Do not bring valuables to the pool. The WAWM RCS Department is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items. Any swimmer who has entered kindergarten must use their respective male/female locker room. Locker room attendants are available to assist. Strollers must be kept out of the pool area for child’s safety. Please carry child or use child carrying device. Use of cell phones and electronic devices is prohibited in locker rooms per state law. Street shoes are not allowed in the pool area. Shoes must be removed. Clean sandals or slippers can be worn.

SWIM LEVEL CLASSIFICATIONS Our lessons are taught by American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors. Please read swim levels carefully and check height requirements to ensure your child is in the correct level. The WAWM RCS Department reserves the right to move your child out of a level for their own safety.

Welcome Dan Steenrod! New Aquatics, 55+ Young at Heart and Adaptive Recreation Program Manager I have three years full time experience managing recreational programs such as aquatics, special events, and youth sports for municipal and non-profit organizations. I am very excited to be joining the WAWM RCS Department and am looking forward to developing programs for adaptive and senior recreation while continuing to work with aquatics. In my free time I can often be found cheering on Chicago sports teams, watching movies, or spending time with friends and family.

OF FINE ARTS

Nathan Hale High School Suburban Concert Band is a community band composed of both professional and amateur musicians from West Allis and the surrounding greater Milwaukee area. We rehearse at Nathan Hale High School on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30pm and our Swing Street Big Band rehearses from 8:30-9:30pm. The band performs four formal concerts throughout the year. In addition, the Concert Band and Swing Street Big Band are proud to represent the City of West Allis in local concerts and parades. We welcome high school (ages 16 and above), college, and adult musicians from all communities throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Haven’t played in awhile? There is no need to worry about an audition—just dust off that instrument and join us for a night of good music. You can also see Swing Street Big Band in the West Allis Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 7. Please see our website at suburbanbands.com for more information.

The West Allis Players will be presenting the inspiring musical Godspell this spring. Loosely based on the gospel of St. Matthew, Godspell is the modern retelling of the lives of John the Baptist, Judas and Jesus Christ. A group of people, gathered by John, come together, encounter Jesus and present a number of Biblical stories through songs, games and comedic skits. Judas is tempted away from Jesus and the group reenacts the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. This heart-warming show features the popular songs Day by Day, By My Side, Turn Back, Old Man and All Good Gifts. The cast will feature adults and children. Please check the West Allis Players’ website at westallisplayers.org for audition information. This show will be directed by Erico Ortiz. Godspell will be presented at Central Auditorium. Show dates and times: April 17, 18, 24, 25 - 7:30pm / April 19, 26 - 2pm
