A warm welcome to Highland Perthshire, the home of The Enchanted Forest, Scotland’s multi award-winning sound and light extravaganza! Highland Perthshire is one of the most beautiful and vibrant areas in the British Isles, with mountains and moorlands, forests and lochs, pretty villages and friendly folk waiting to welcome you. Nature and community combine forces to give visitors to the area a real taste of Highland Perthshire. From magical woodlands to music festivals, adventure activities to wildlife, Highland Perthshire is THE place to be this autumn. Take a look at some of the events on offer in our Calendar, and explore the brochure for more information on places to eat and stay.

The Highland Perthshire Area Community Interest Company (known as the CIC) is a not-for-profit community organisation that seeks to develop and maintain the economic benefits of major events in Highland Perthshire. Run by local people, for local people, the CIC manages and delivers The Enchanted Forest which attracts increasing numbers of visitors every year – last year more than 30,000 came to marvel at the spectacle.

Absorb: The Enchanted Forest Faskally Woods, Pitlochry Friday 4 October – Sunday 27 October Your journey begins with a bus ride into the forest, where you will be greeted and asked to follow a dimly lit path that leads you to the start of this year’s show - Absorb. The Hub, the place to meet your friends, have a bite to eat and enjoy other activities, is just the start of your evening. From here you can explore the show, following a number of different paths, all lit with different coloured orbs to show you the way. On your journey you will come across a sweeping light show accompanied by a big orchestral score, dark spaces where the woods are watching you, interactive areas where you can change light and sound and then watch a spectacular floating display from different vantage points around the loch. Our Storytellers are back, in their Yurt hidden in the forest and there’s lots more for you to discover. We hope you enjoy this year’s aborbing Enchanted Forest. Derek Allan Producer

The Hermitage, Dunkeld © Antonia Malcolm

This beautiful area of Scotland covers approximately 1,000 square miles and there’s so much to say about it that we’d need a book: majestic scenery, spectacular autumn colours, adventure sports galore, quirky independent retailers, scrumptious food and true Highland hospitality. Here’s a brief taster of what each of the main places has to offer you!

Aberfeldy & Kenmore Right in the middle of Scotland’s heartland and a short hop from The Enchanted Forest, the bustling country town of Aberfeldy offers cafés & bistros, gift shops & galleries, delis & antiques. Browse in the shops, stop for a coffee and a cake in one of the cafés, take a walk on the wild side at Highland Safaris or immerse yourself in the Iron Age at the Crannog Centre on the banks of Loch Tay at Kenmore (10 minutes west of Aberfeldy).

8

Blair Atholl © James Rattray, HighlandPerthshire.com

Blair Atholl An unspoilt gem of a Victorian village just off the A9, with the fairytale Blair Castle as its main attraction. Admire the magnificent Hercules Gardens, take a tour of the estate, explore the attics of the Castle and then take tea in the village at the Watermill Café, which dates back to the 16th century. A tiny village with a big heart!

Birnam & Dunkeld A short hop from Pitlochry, these two historic towns span the River Tay. Explore the ruins of the ancient Cathedral on the river bank, enjoy an event at Birnam Arts, dress up as Mrs Tiggy-Winkle at the Beatrix Potter Museum, or catch a gig at Dougie MacLean’s Perthshire Amber festival. Browse in the lovely shops, try your hand at decorating pottery and have a feast at one of many restaurants and cafés.

Kinloch Rannoch A little further away, but well worth the effort. Stunning scenery, with towering Schiehallion as a backdrop, on the edge of Loch Rannoch, a well-stocked village shop with a friendly welcome, a cosy cafe/gift shop and miles and miles of unspoilt moorland to explore, bursting with animal, bird and plant life. Get away from it all and fill your lungs with pure Highland air!

9

Session House, Kirkmichael

Kirkmichael Just over the hill from Pitlochry, this little village nestles on the edge of the River Ardle and has plenty to offer. Stay at one of the three excellent hotels, follow the Cateran Trail (formerly a cattle rustler’s track) round the glens, go to a talk in the Session House and then snuggle up in front of a log fire at your hotel with a well-deserved dram!

Pitlochry & Killiecrankie As well as a must-see visit to the Enchanted Forest, why not take in a play at Pitlochry Festival Theatre? The regular season continues until mid October, with the Autumn Classic (The Steamie) starting on 24th. Admire the panoramic views from the top of Ben-y-Vrackie, play a round of golf at the town’s “Hidden Gem” club, see the Soldier’s Leap at Killiecrankie, visit the two local distilleries (Edradour is the smallest in Scotland), swoosh down the Tummel rapids in a canoe or throw caution to the wind and try a bungee jump! Tea-rooms and restaurants galore, daytime & evening events for all ages throughout the town.
