Thought ‘Street style’ was just for the streets? Think again! We’ve seen sportswear make an appearance on the runways time and time again, this season it’s come sprinting back. Go and grab your fresh sneaks and an edgy bomber; it looks as though this seemingly irremovable trend ain’t going nowhere. With AW’16 collections fuelling the trend into the colder months, street style is well and truly in pole position. So, Yes! The swagger of street wear has made itself known to us! Envision all things denim, a splash of mesh, a dab of leather and a shredded skirt or two and voila! And, whilst you’re there, team it all with baseball caps and fabulous, ghetto-bling galore; all of which made an appearance at Alexander Wang SS’16. If you want to be first on the block to wise up to this trend, it’s fair to say it’s time to add some athleisure wear to your wardrobe. If you’re not sure how to work a sports vibe without looking like you’re about to break off into a Hip Hop convention…sit back and relax, Team Voir has it covered. We’re about to make sure you cover all the bases. Our “Word on the Street” editorial is sure to inspire. I’ve hand picked some of the finest pieces both from the runway and High Street which are sure to get the streets talking. Issue 16 has back-to-back insights on how to master this trend. We’re kicking off with our trend reporter Sarah Holden, giving her stylish overview of

the designers who are down with the cool kids. Laura White introduces us to the international bloggers who are so ahead of the fash pack, delivering sporty loungewear and street-style looks that are so on the mark for this season. Meanwhile, Hannah Oulton pays homage to Alexander Wang, the fashion genius behind the frenzy that is ‘Street style’ this SS’16. And keeping you fashion forward, Kat Evans takes a glance into the future and gives a break down of one of the most talked about shows of New York Fashion Week Autumn/ Winter 2016: Yeezy season 3. It isn’t just the runways that are adorned with street wear however, the high street stores have also succumbed to the hype by launching sass-filled sportswear collections. And, speaking of sass, Hold Up, grab yourself some Lemonade and get yourself in Formation. Everyone, please be upstanding for our cover star, Queen Bey. Beyoncé has launched one of the most talked about sportswear collections to hit the streets, known as Ivy Park. It’s been named the most popular brand on Instagram, with the singer’s 228 piece collection sending the Topshop website Crazy in Love. So without giving too much away, I’ll end by saying K.K - just think Justin Bieber and you’re in for a treat. Now’s the time for you to be Voired! In an industry where the cogs have begun to spin out of control, where creativity has been critically stifled by the generic trend monsters and industry demands have sent fashion’s finest running (or Uber-ing for the hills) it is almost ironic that fashion’s anti-trends are the new directives. It’s no longer about what’s being published but rather what’s being posted and by whom, which in turn begs the question: who has the biggest voice in fashion- the critics or the consumer? Official is officially overrrrr thanks to social media, hence the reason that Street Fashion is so successful. It’s a no brainer when it comes to creating a relevant product when the collections are market led by designers who are down with the kids and not to mention #dope! Unlike previous anti-fashion movements (eg the Punks) which arose from the disaffected youthquakes with a political or social message and a soundtrack to go with, post anti-fashion is less oppositional, more detached and organic, or rather it really doesn’t give a f***. Consider this a good place to pitch yourself as a designer when you literally find yourself up for the LVMH prize or head-hunted for the position as top dog at Balenciaga like Alexander Wang or Vetements’ Demna Gvasalia. Street Fashion has enjoyed a huge surge due to the explosion of Street Style, popularised by the burgeoning social media platforms and Instagram’s most influential. It’s more about doing your own thang rather than following the crowd.

In an ideal world (or the world of Kanye West or Virgil Abloh) this involves travelling the globe on a weekly basis and hanging with the coolest international models, DJs and musicians in your designer hoodie and ripped jeans. Obvs. Urban Fashion has been champion of the tech-savvy Millenials, who shun the day job in favour of the dream (mostly anything that involves a selfie and/or will gain you a credible amount of followers). I mean what could be more relevant than an oversized sweatshirt or a pair of haute leggings to do that in? Unlike the catwalks or the pages of wellknown fashion mags, the clothes may be nondescript but the lifestyle is nothing short of aspirational.


Take Alexander Wang’s eponymous brand for instance and his signature ‘model off duty’ look. Launched slightly shy of the social media boom in 2005, Wang was a force to be reckoned with championing his own vision into a reality at the tender age of only 21, utilising his Chinese roots to secure precision production and independent manufacture. Wang’s collections coined the phrase ‘sports luxe’ for not only did the eponymous label offer high end, off duty casuals for the ‘in’ crowd but his contemporary vision had serious sex appeal. Coupled with his raw editorials and casual models, Wang struck a relative chord with his target demographic who wanted cool clothes to hang out in. Having captured the eagle eye of Anna Wintour at his first catwalk show in 2007 with his all edgy American sportswear, Alexander Wang was well on the way to becoming one of the biggest names in Street Fashion paving the way to the next generation of cool kids; the poster boy of fashion’s new establishment.

Thanks to Wang’s break through Street Fashion has never been so mainstream. Why? Because it’s so damn functional, unsuspecting and integral. And oh yeah, highly celebrity-endorsed. Ask anyone who the coolest man in Paris is right now and they’ll tell you that Vetements’ front man Demna Gvaslia is. Part of a seven-man co-operative the almost anonymous label Vetements was born out of a desire to shake up the fashion industry, opposing the impossible demands placed upon designers with a nonchalant aesthetic inspired by normality (cue oversized hoodies with a 1980’s appeal, workaday jerseys, reclaimed leathers, denims and the odd thrift store accessory) that hovers between the catwalk and the street. Even the DHL man is having a moment! I can’t say I haven’t put in a request with our aforementioned delivery homie for a corporate T-shirt rather than the obligatory calendar and branded jelly beans this Christmas. Let’s face it, your parents (like many of the critics) won’t get it! Global conversation according to tried and tested theory should go a little along the lines of “WHAT?! £500 for a sweatshirt? A sweatshirt? Pffftttt!”. God forbid should that sweatshirt also sport a hole of any kind. So what is it that makes these seemingly ordinary clothes so appealing? That would have to be the nod of approval from the likes of Kanye West sporting his own Yeezy label to some several million Instafans. Deemed as ‘tonal’ and ‘samey’ by the industry’s most acclaimed critics, sales of Yeezy Season 1 proved everyone wrong as the label sold out globally as Kanye’s influence (underpinned by the Off White’s head genus Virgil Abloh’s unparalleled creative input) sent the street scene into overdrive. Further more Kanye’s Yeezy Boost collaboration with Adidas literally broke the internet. Possibly more so than Kimmy K’s #Belfie. Love it or hate it Post Anti-Fashion is the consumer’s choice that shuns the penance of traditional catwalk collections and their elitist superiority for everyday wearability that oozes a sense of honesty and integrity through unconventional means. Note those aspirational Insta lovelies sporting those signature Off White stripes and LA cool low tops, the increasing abundance of accessible Athlesiure high street collaborations such as Riccardo Tisci for Nike or Beyoncé’s Ivy Park. Given the mass shake up of the fashion industry, Urban Fashion or rather ‘clothing people can actually wear’ must surely be a Movement in the right direction if even if is just “trackies”. S.H

In a world where social media is almost as important as breathing and ‘#SquadGoals’ is a modern-day proverb, fashion makes for a refreshing merger between real life and the celebrity dream world. One man who has a talent for bridging this gap is Californian native turned New York natural, Alexander Wang. For ten years, Wang has taken high fashion and splashed it onto the streets of the world for all and sunder to revel in. And boy have we revelled. In celebration of ten years of his eponymous label – just after the decision to part with Balenciaga might we add - Wang took his Spring-Summer ’16 collection and put on a show. Not just any show: a show with a montage of his runway best bits, pole dancers (see, we told you it was a show) and a new season collection so god-damn wardrobe-staple, the models could have sashayed in straight from the sidewalk. Did we mention the FRow? Kylie Jenner, Nicky Minaj, Bella Hadid, Lady GaGa – there’s too many to name. Oh and let’s not forget waitresses from Hooters for the after party. Invite must have been lost in the post...

Yes, to a trained eye these pieces reeked of classic Wang details; but by Jove were they wearable. Distressed denim, oversized utility jackets, lust-worthy leather and enough metallic hardware to give Iron Man a run for his money. The brief? There was no brief. In a world full of innovation, Wang chose minimalist necessity and ran with it.

There were, of course, some all-American traits trickling through the looks: cowboy fringing, baseball caps (hello 90s) and string basket-ball style vests... the string vest, who woulda thunk it. The full-leg lacing, pyjama tops and double denim were a new, and welcome, addition to everyday staples. Nineties grunge was romanticised, layering dainty silk, lace slips with khaki and leather. I mean, my mini dress is being donned with a bomber and cap from now on in true Wang-girl style. We can’t be red-carpet ready all the time.




With this compilation of ridiculously cool pieces, what better way to flaunt SS’16 than with an equally hip campaign? And yes, I did just use the word ‘hip’. Take some seriously cool kids (we mean like Travis Scott kinda cool), adorn with the finest of Wang glad-rags and parade them all over Instagram. Voila; the @WangSquad is born.

Shot by the genius that is Steven Klein, this campaign captures the ‘no agenda’ agenda of Wang’s SS’16 collection. These frank images are almost snapshots into the life of Manhattan’s inhabitants; where the cool kids – Lexi Boling, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Vic Mensa to name drop a few - just happen to be sporting the ultimate brand: Wang. They’re sexy, they’re life-like, they’re so on-point they make us want an Instagram account exactly like @WangSquad. After ten years in the biz, it’s a true accolade to fashion when a designer gets it this right. The original home of Street Style, Alexander Wang knows his girl (and boy) and doesn’t conform to the industry rules. With a jump and a leap from one calling to another, Wang has set the bar high for things to come from this sports-chic power house. So with our soon-to-be-worn-down-nubs-for-thumbs glued to the @WangSquad Insta account, we await with bated breath the latest Wang fad to come. In the meantime, let’s work on getting those leather-clad laundrette poses down...H.O

Who Run the World? Queen Bey. And of course, it comes as no surprise how much the global phenomenon has accomplished in her 34 years. From starting out as the lead vocalist in Destiny’s Child to establishing a successful solo career, Beyoncé has won 20 Grammy awards and sold over 100 million records worldwide, not bad for a mere 34 years of life ay. She is one of the bestselling music artists of all time, with the recent debut of her 6th album, “Lemonade” breaking the chart record when each track, (yes, that’s right, each track) reached the Billboard top 100. As if a singing career wasn’t enough though, Beyoncé is a songwriter, record producer, dancer and actress… oh and also a mother to her daughter, Blue Ivy. I’m sure you’d agree that Queen Bey has everyone’s blessing if she wanted to take a break and put her feet up for a while, but oh no, just when you thought there wasn’t much else for the superwoman to conquer, she has recently launched an activewear label in collaboration with Topshop known as Ivy Park.

If there’s one person who’s going to get you motivated to get up and shake it, it’s going to be Beyoncé. She makes a full workout look effortless in some of her most well-known and cherished music videos such as “Single Ladies” where she sashays around the set with effortless ease. But, of course, with full on sass as we expect from the female powerhouse. Now, there’s the chance for us normal folk to make a bid to become as sassy, strong and fierce as Ms Carter herself. The answer? Ivy Park. The 200 piece range isn’t just comprised of workout gear. The high performance styles are combined with fashionable casualwear meaning Beyoncé is one step ahead, which comes as no surprise, as she designed the range to ensure you can look Flawless whilst you get in Formation.

Simultaneously, the unstoppable songstress provides the voice over, describing how the park is her state of mind and made her who she is. Think slow motion jump rope in the rain, high intensity training, and even a shot with Blue Ivy in an adorable matching Ivy Park headband. Bey’s curvaceous figure is shown off from start to finish, with the mega star adorning her bootyliciously flattering creations. The pieces from the Ivy Park collection won’t even break the bank either; given that the prices range from as little as £8.00 to £160.00, you have the perfect excuse to Upgrade U-rself. Say what you want about Kanye West – whether you’re a lover or a hater, he’s a master of his craft. He’s a worldwide icon. First and foremost he has smashed his way to the top of the musical world, headlining Glastonbury in the bargain, and in more recent years, has begun to carve out his name on the fashion leader board. His following is one that some stars could only dream of, so when he took his first steps onto the fashion stage, it was only fitting that his brand Yeezy exploded. Behold King Kanye - whatever he touches turns to gold.

As one of the most talked about shows of New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2016-17, the event of Yeezy Season 3 [a Yeezy-Adidas collaboration] was never going to be a miniscule affair – it was always going to be an interruption that was welcomed by the fashion pack. It isn’t every day that a designer shows over 1000 male and female models at the same time. Throw in an unveiling of Kanye’s never-before-heard brand new ‘The Life of Pablo’ album, add one of New York’s biggest venues – Madison Square Garden, an 18,000-strong audience, and hundreds of thousands of people streaming the show via live-stream… you get where he’s going with this. Go hard or go home. Whilst the pedigree of Kanye the designer may not yet fully have been established, you cannot argue with the hype and the fashion-worshipping stars who flock to his shows. Now into its third season, Yeezy has garnered the respect of fashion and music heavyweights alike. The runway Queen that is Naomi Campbell was the stand-out model of the show – looking flawless in the collection’s signature black bodysuit and draping fur coat. Anna Wintour, Olivier Rousteing and Carine Roitfeld headed up the celebrity-fest FRow, whilst the entire Kardashian clan turned up in style to support Kim’s man.



Yeezy doesn’t do things by halves and certainly dances to its own heavy hitting beat. The collection itself may have ruffled a lot of feathers on the world stage, but that’s because it stepped outside of the ‘normal’ fashion realm. Sure, the boundaries of fashion are pushed every season, but Yeezy brings in a whole new outlook to the industry and breaks the mould ever so audaciously. From the three collections so far, we know three things - Yeezy is about athletic wear, simplicity of colour and the fit of the clothes. Autumn/Winter has the muted, moody colour palette of seasons past with pieces ranging from whites to burnt oranges, nudes to taupes, and maroons to blacks to khakis, all cleverly styled in Yeezy’s signature colour blocking genius across the models. There appeared to be more attention to the finer details - hints of pattern (camo of course!), knitted pieces and influences from a whole range of places, making for a truly eclectic ready-to-wear range. True to form, the juxtaposition of skin tight athletic stylings and oversized silhouettes are the essence of the collection. For women, bodycon is the key word. Bodysuits, leggings, dresses and crop tops featured heavily throughout showing Yeezy’s appreciation of the female form – styled with oversized jackets to mix it up and give the collection an urban edge. Of course, there was an accent of luxury with the floor-length mink coats. For men, it’s oversized. Baggy trousers, long shorts, oversized jumpers, desert boots and puffa jackets – all supersized and a clear reflection of the designer’s very own style, making it all the more sought after. The new look Yeezy sneakers obviously make an appearance – white this time! Yeezy Season 3 is a collection that screams of its owner, in a positive way. It’s strong, it’s bold yet understated at the same time. Kanye has built up his empire on being confident and self-assured, translating into some of the best artistic work on offer today. Music and fashion have long gone hand in hand and Yeezy is a prime example. So whether you want to be part of Yeezy’s clique or not, there’s no denying he’s the man with the Midas touch. K.E

Over 5,000 people flocked to Leeds College of Art between 11 – 16 June to catch their students’ final year exhibition, titled Made Here. The College, now in its 170th year of teaching art and design, hosted an innovative collection of final year student work. The College’s studio areas were transformed into large exhibition spaces where visitors could view the latest creative talent from across the further education and degree courses. Taking over the College’s buildings was a diverse range of works; everything from sculpture, paintings, prints, textiles, design, animation, illustration, photography, creative adverts and fashion! Running alongside the exhibition, was ‘The Art Market’, where people could purchase the works of over 50 new and exciting artists and designers graduating from Leeds College of Art. Everything from pots and cushions to jewellery and prints. Founded in 1846 as the Leeds Government School of Art and Design, Leeds College of Art has contributed significantly to the development of art education in Britain and across the world. Today, it remains one of only a few remaining independent art schools in the UK, leading the way as a centre for art and design education. The College has an impressive history of notable past students, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth studied in 1919 and 1920. In later years Damien Hirst, Marcus Harvey, Eric Bainbridge, Clio Barnard and Georgina Starr all studied at the College, known then as the Jacob Kramer College. The College’s recent graduates continue to win prestigious international awards year on year and enjoy successful careers in the creative industries.E.M.

L.R: The new album? Tell us about it! R.G: ‘Reflections’ is my debut solo album. These new songs are much more personal than anything I have ever written with my band The Yalla Yallas. It felt like a voyage of self-discovery. Musically it’s different to the punk rock songs you might normally hear from me. It’s more of a songwriters album. There is acoustic guitars, violins, saxophones, pianos. Some of the songs are really tender, heartbreak songs if you will. Some of it really upbeat. I’d like to think that there’s something for everyone. L.R: The latest single ‘Burned’ how did that come about? R.G: ‘Burned’ was the last song to be written for the record. In fact I delayed the release of the album another six months to include this song. I wrote ‘Burned’ after meeting Barbara Pugliese from the band Barbarella’s Bang Bang at Glastonbury, where we both performed last year. She is an incredible artist, a true all-rounder she can sing, dance, act, and I just had to write a song for her. It’s quite a dark jazzy-blues number. I imagined Nina Simone singing with Nick Cave in a Romeo and Juliet style storyline. The video was so much fun. Myself and Barbara are quite energetic happy creatures but we had to be very sullen and moody for this one. We got the brief from our director Cory Holodnyj to be dressed for our own funeral. Barbara was stunning, so beautiful. I tried to dress like a drunk Sinatra. L.R: There are so many styles on this record, who are your influences? R.G: I was listening to lots of Nick Cave, Nina Simone, and Johnny Cash whilst writing the album. Patti Smith is also a massive influence on me. Everytime I listen to her music I feel compelled to pick up an instrument and write another song. L.R: Anything else on the horizon? R.G: Yes, I’m currently booking dates for another European tour in July, and if I can get all the musicians together who played on the album then I’d love to do an album launch party later in the year. I shall also be continuing to perform with my punk band The Yalla Yallas. L.R: Where can we get hold of the record? Well hey, KK! Get ready everyone, Kelly Kiara has arrived. Interview by Jyoti Matoo Compiled by Rachel Langan


The 24 year old singer/ songwriter, born in Leeds, took on the daunting prospect of covering one of Justin Bieber’s most recent and recognised songs: ‘Love Yourself.’ What’s so unique about her though? I hear you ask. Well, unlike the rest, Kiara decided to go against the grain and retort to JB’s airy fairy anti love ballad with her own comeback version. She justified her bold move by quite rightly stating that: “As a guy he’s never been through what a girl goes through, so I kind of ripped it apart.” And rip it apart she did. She turned Bieber’s hit tune inside out, back to front and put a Kiara stamp of sass on it. And that, is exactly what we love about her; her bold and blasé attitude encased in a seemingly delicate and definitely gorgeous young songstress. So where did it all begin? And how do you go about notching up over 11,000,000 views on YouTube and shout outs from people such as Ashton Kutcher and Young Money? Pure talent and hard work of course. This comes as no surprise. Yet, there is something rare and bracing in Kelly’s genuine desire to pursue her passion for music tirelessly in order to make a name for herself in the industry.

“It really is all about figuring out where you want to be and the steps you need to get there. I’ve got such a strong idea of what I want and anything else other than that is just not worth doing.” Kelly’s tunnel vision for music was clear from the start. At the tender age of 18 she pestered DJs in Leeds in the hope that they would feature her on a track. Her tenacity paid off when they agreed and her name made its way onto the scene, but for Kelly, this wasn’t nearly enough. At 21, she went to London by herself with the aim of meeting producers and sharing her music.



Shortly after, Kelly veered off on a family holiday to New York to track down record labels in the hope of giving them a taste of her music. Sadly her efforts were in vain, as no one was ready to listen, but this didn’t deter her, oh no. Kelly’s long-time friend Yo Preston approached her in the hope of collaborating on Bieber’s track and the rest is history.

“In just a day it had gone viral..... within hours!” The pair’s success on the collab didn’t just stop there. The figures speak for themselves.

Number One in the Spotify Viral top 50, Number 17 in the UK in the iTunes chart and Number Two in Australia. Kiara is now a force to be reckoned with. Her latest EP is set to be unleashed this summer, and it’s destined to soar, if her incredible talent and internet stardom is anything to go by. It’s clear that the key to achieving your dreams is true persistence, but the way to ensure meaningful and well-deserved success is to be “very raw and real” in what you practise and what you preach, something very close to Kiara’s heart. After all, “Things should never be fluffy unless they’re slippers or a dressing gown.” Could this be the start of something amazing? Well, we’re sold. Get ready to start seeing Kelly Kiara a lot more in the not so distant future.
