“Conquer and constantly reclaim your freedom with originality boldness and persistence as your only weapons”.

Gabrielle Chanel

This is my favourite quote, and has inspired me on my personal journey so far. Welcome to Voir 20; the issue for celebrating strong inspiring women, the ‘women of substance’ who have made their dreams a reality, and those who are very much on that journey. Success rarely comes easy; the more stories of success I learn about, the more I understand the risks that were taken, the rules that were broken, and the depth of the dedication and focus. I believe that no matter what stage of the journey you are on, you can fulfil your dreams if you put your mind to it. Our cover star Raye (singer/songwriter) knows a thing or two about breaking away from the ordinary and taking risks. At the tender age of 19 she is rapidly becoming one of the standout voices of the British music scene. She has collaborated with Jax Jones, Stormzy, Jonas Blue and supported Jess Glynn on her

arena tour. From the moment I heard her voice I was instantly drawn to her like a magnet, and when I carried out my research, Raye was everything the Voir woman encompasses; daring to be different, a risk-taker, knows exactly what she wants and will not settle for anything less. It was perfect that she graced the Voir cover. Issue 20 has been designed to inspire you. There’s our quirky blend of current runway trends and editorial fashion, and more than a few must-read articles to empower. Kat Evans discovers why Versace stands for Equality, Unity and Love, while Hannah Oulton strongly declares “Now’s the time to make style your statement to the world, whether personal or political, it’s our time to shine”. We’re also celebrating diversity in a glowing way; we get up close and personal with the faces of Fenty Beauty! Team Voir invites you to celebrate who you are, and to look upon this issue as a testimony to the women before you, who have smashed boundaries to achieve their goals. Let’s face it no journey is easy, and if we are to stay on course to completing ours, let’s take originality, boldness and persistence with us, wherever we go. It’s time for you to be Voired

WAY Culture, age, race, gender, religion, politics. No matter the topic, the fashion industry is no stranger to the real world as we know it. Their ability to bring the world’s issues together and deliver lust-worthy collections with meaning, gives hope and inspiration on a three dimensional level. Throw in some strong shoulders, an iconic beret and catchy slogan; it’s the female revolution, baby. Fashion has and always will be an anchoring constant in an everchanging world. A platform which allows the personal and the political to seamlessly blend, sometimes in a way where one can become the other as a matter of principle or need. Whilst we often revel in the fantastical world our beloved designers, editors, photographers and models create for us; their hidden truths are always there. This Autumn-Winter season’s truth is female empowerment, fully endorsed from the catwalk to streets of Washington. Now’s the time to make style your statement to the world, whether personal or political, it’s our time to shine. We really need a Spice Girl’s reunion right about now, #GirlPower is making a come-back.

Blue is a must-wear tone set for this season. Forget the stereotyped colour for our male counterparts, think wistful hopefulness and mysterious fervour in this season’s hue. Christian Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiari brought us a full collection of blue-toned beauties, an eloquent nod to equality. For her first season at this revered label she gave us the ‘we should all be feminists’ slogan Tee an undeniable cult piece amongst the fashionably fabulous glitterati in the front row. We saw Dior’s iconic Bar jacket was reworked with a statement hood, there were extremely wearable denims (dungarees are back by the way) and just enough romanticism in lush tulle skirts to cater for every dream. Celine’s palette came in navy and powderblue. Midnight blue staples with unique fringed detail, stunningly fluid suits and a sky blue trench coat that’s set to be the staple of every street style star from here to Timbuktu. More blue hues from Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and Miu Miu and ‘feeling blue’ just got a whole new meaning.

WAY Strong shoulders have always been intrinsically synonymous with female empowerment - think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, Joan Collins in Dynasty just not as extravagant. I don’t know what it is about those pronounced shoulders but it makes a gal feel invincible. Stella McCartney showed us the meaning of co-ordination with stunning suits in heritage checked tweeds and nipped in waists. The suiting was fluid yet strong, a signature of Stella’s eponymous brand. Her strong sense of self echoed through the collection, further honing in on this season’s feminist statement. Victoria Beckham brought it with her iconic angular overcoats, strongshouldered blouses and dresses with a stunning fluid finishing. Her pieces were capsule for the modern woman, easy luxury with no apology for simplicity. The ultimate in ready-to-wear, dripping with female empowerment. Seventies is our next stop and where else to look for strong style and strong women alike? Miuccia Prada

displayed a true sense of maximalism, drawing contrast to the woes of the modern world right now. Drawing down on the role of the contemporary woman’s role in society, this collection was all about mixing the sexy with the mundane, embodying every woman’s like and/or dislikes. Brown-toned hues, hardy corduroy, seductive lace and mesmerising prints won at every strut. Gucci and Mulberry also came to play in the 70s throwback section, much to our delight. A strong woman should be able to do as she pleases and doesn’t this trend just prove it? Ahhh freak out, le freak, c’est chic. Bringing the definitive girl’s world to a head was the undeniable accessories. From the iconic Dior Che Guevara-esque beret carrying a sense of activism to the masculine lace-up flatforms from Hermès; accessories screamed female empowerment. Time to experiment and work with something that identifies you as you. I’m so game for those Saint Laurent ruched boots and furhandled Miu Miu bags…heaven.

Autumn Winter ‘17 is certainly a season for pushing barriers and waking the world with a visionary punch. The shows saw designers like Dries van Noten, Simone Rocha and Max Mara thrusting age, body and ethnic diversity forward for the industry. Dior, Prada and Missoni gave us a strong sense of activism and solidarity; standing up for what we believe in. Prabal Gurung gave us our new slogan: ‘The future is female’. And we also saw the stunning Halma Aden become the first Muslim woman to walk a major runway show. Certainly a season of change. Whether we choose to follow fashion for the beauty, design or style or whether we choose our own style for personal or political beliefs; there’s no denying the fashion industry brings it all together. One place we can find solace, hope, inspiration and strength is right here in our AW ‘17 collections. So bring it big and bring it loud, this one’s for us ladies. This one’s the start of something incredible to come. H.O.

“some people and artists I grew up listening to, are some of my closest friends.

Our cover girl Raye is the perfect ambassador for our Female Empowerment Issue, not least because she is strong, committed, talented and humble. Being a young woman within the tough and still male-dominant music industry is a long way from being easy, yet this young British singer/songwriter is managing to carve a unique path ahead. Still at the tender age of 19, Raye has already supported Jess Glynne on tour, been featured on Jonas Blue’s 2016 single “By Your Side” and, more recently, Jax Jones’ “You Don’t Know Me”, which peaked at number three in the UK Singles Chart. She has collaborated with the likes of Stormzy and Nas, and is only just getting going. She took time out from her busy schedule to give a little insight to what makes her tick, and model for Voir’s cover story.

JM: We know that you discovered your love for music very young, at what point did it become a career? Raye: It became a career properly for me when I got my first writing cut, after signing my publishing deal. I would write loads of different ideas and songs to dance backing tracks hoping someone would like it. I finally got my first one co-writing Blonde ‘All Cried Out’ which went top 5 in the UK chart. You’ve collaborated with some amazing artists such as: Stormzy, Nas, Jonas Blue, Jax Jones and Charli XCX. How did these come about? These collaborations all happen randomly. I guess it’s just working hard. This also allows random opportunities to pop up all around you and now some people and artists I grew up listening to, are some of my closest friends. Which is pretty mad.

JM: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career so far? And was there ever a time when you thought about giving up? The biggest challenge has to be learning patience. Having to understand you’ll write songs that people won’t get to hear for a while and having to sit on songs I literally wanna put out tomorrow. haha but I write songs I love all the time so I have to trust in the journey and be patient. And I’ve never thought about giving up, I could never want to right now, I’ve come so far and it’s only just the beginning in my mind. What’s been your biggest achievement so far? Probably when I ended up playing The O2 arena twice in a week, once supporting Jess Glynne on tour and one was Jingle Bell Ball with Captial FM. What is your ultimate goal? To go number 1 in every single country. Hahaha I really wanna push myself to be the biggest and the best I can be. What advice would you give to women pursuing a career in music? If you love what you do, don’t stop what you do. Go out looking for opportunities don’t wait for them to come to you.

Credited with steering the brand into the 21st century, Donatella is the embodiment of all things Versace. Glamourous to the core, bold, outspoken, fearless – she is THE fashion queen.

Words: Kat Evans Images courtesy of Versace.

POWER. EQUALITY. LOVE. COURAGE. UNITY. Welcome to your buzzwords for the season. If there was ever any doubt about the presence a woman should have when she walks, then let me introduce you to Versace Autumn/Winter 2017. While the seasons maybe changing and we mourn the loss of the sun for yet another year, we have all the strength, fearlessness and individuality any one woman could need, wrapped up in this season’s Versace. It’s uncompromising, it’s clean, it’s fierce, it’s fearless – it’s empowerment of the female form. Mixing femininity and masculinity may not be a new concept on the catwalk – but this has Donatella’s oh-so-glamourous flair. It’s no less than striking. It has the glitz and glamour we know to expect with silk gowns, pencil skirts and flared detailing, mixed with a punk edge. Styled with heavy eyeliner, vibrant hair extensions in cyan, yellow and orange, the models are uncompromising on the catwalk. Of course, models-of-themoment Gigi, Bella, Kendall – they’re all there - are front and centre, each and every one embodying the very theme of the collection – diversity, strength and individuality. Something Versace lives and breathes. The house of Versace needs no introduction – it is one of the most well-known fashion brands in the world. From its foundation in the seventies by Gianni Versace, to his untimely death in 1997 through to present day, Versace has long been at the forefront of the fashion industry. Donatella, Gianni’s younger sister and muse, took the helm following the founder’s death and in the face of incredible sadness carried on his legacy. Versace is a house built on foundations of Italian luxury, female empowerment and class. Credited with steering the brand into the 21st

century, Donatella is the embodiment of all things Versace. Glamourous to the core, bold, outspoken, fearless – she is THE fashion queen. Her trademark bleached blonde hair, her love of making a statement, her larger-than-life character – she is everything the fashion world needs and loves. For a woman who once said, ‘I’m not a believer in the natural look’, she has transfixed the industry ever since she took to the helm of the Versace House. While some designers shun the fame that comes with having such incredible talent, she lives and breathes the fashion world - maybe that’s her secret to keeping Versace firmly on the map for so long. As with Donatella, this collection commands attention. It celebrates the finer aspects of masculinity and femininity - blended up with a Versace stamp. Masculinity is prevalent through beautiful tailoring styled with cropped jackets, sportswear styled as evening wear, cropped suit jackets with exaggerated shoulder pads, but it’s the feminine glamour which prevails and is the crowning glory. Lace slips with cut-out details, sheer panelling and daring sheer dresses with floral embellishment. It is the perfect mixture of masculinity and femininity. Black is definitely back this season, as the collection starts with an oversized overcoat, pristine white tailored shirt details with a peek of sheer fabric underneath, emblazoned with one of those buzzwords of the season – the perfect introduction to the collection. What follows are those slogans emblazoned in block capitals across each piece – from head with bright orange beanie hats, to toe with the black and white stiletto heels and the lace up shoeboots. Tailored trousers, p e n c i l skirts, s u i t

jackets, overcoats – all get a Versace twists with a mash-up of patterns, florals, embellishment and textures. There are cropped jackets, exaggerated shoulder pads with hood and pencil skirt – it’s office wear that’s just too good to be in the office. Of course, it wouldn’t be a winter collection without a hint of fur – keep an eye out for THAT luxurious blood red to black fur coat. Through Versace’s eyes, this is exactly what a woman should be and stand for - strong but not aggressive, feminine but takes no sh*t. Once again, Versace brings us everything and more. Vivacity, tenacity – it’s Versace for all women. But as the rumours continue to swirl as to whether Donatella is about to hand over the reins to friend and fellow designer Ricardo Tisci – if this is her final swansong, she’s definitely reached her peak. ENTY

FACES

THE FENTY FACE Rihanna spent years refining her go-to makeup technique, testing it backstage, on stage, and in real life. Now, with her own lineup of products masterfully developed to work together, she reveals her real-life method for killer radiance, making her iconic complexion accessible to all. “The Fenty Face was created for women of all skin tones, of all personalities,” she says. “These steps are key to starting your makeup, no matter the look you’re going for.” For Rihanna, the secret to radiance lies in the very first step of the Fenty Face, a soft matte filt’r—because no matter your skin type, adding glow on glow = unwanted shine. The second step? Layer your highlight for strategicallyplaced glow—it’s all about lighting up where you want. Lastly, get ahead of shine by blotting on the fly, wherever and whenever; Rihanna believes that being photoready means being shine-free. Unlock all of makeup’s limitless possibilities with the Fenty Face: Rihanna’s “go-to method for years,” and the driving philosophy at the heart of Fenty Beauty.

This season, brushed brows and dewy skin create a really clean and fresh natural look. The odd addition of light oranges and plush pinks to the eyelids, and a slight gloss to the lips, kept the looks as minimally flawless as possible. Val Garland was behind the natural brushed-brow look of Erdem AW17, using a combination of Nars’ Concealer and satin real-skin foundation for a soft velvet finish. Steve Rowbottom, Director of WESTROW Hair Salons, reveals the New Season’s take on hair colour and style trends, as seen at Fashion Week A/W’17

Roberta Einer

EDIT

BEAUTY

Westrow

...... THE NEW BOB Good news for the scissor-phobic: we saw an emerging trend for faux-bobs at Fashion Week A/W17. At Acne, models wore longer hair tucked in to their neckline, to create faux-bobs, with mousse ‘squashed’ in to roots, to create restricted movement. At Roberta Einer models appeared to sport textured curly bobs. Upon closer inspection, models’ longer hair had actually been styled in to a double French twist close to the nape of the neck, before rolling under and pinning, to create a fauxbob shape. This is a great way for longer-haired ladies to try out a whole new look, without the commitment of a cut.

THE NEW PARTING

......

Westrow

Eudon Choi

Extreme and to one side will be the most on-trend way to part hair this season. At Eudon Choi, hair was worn in wet-look low ponytails with extreme side partings. It was a similar story at Carolina Herrera, where a dose of androgynous styling saw models’ hair slicked tightly against the head, pulled back and away from the face, with an extreme far left parting. Want to recreate the look? Straightening irons, a fine-toothed comb and L’Oréal Professionnel’s Tecni Art Liss Control Serum, RRP £12.59 are essential. And remember to consider face shape – extreme side partings are a great way to show off razorsharp cheekbones and angular features, but wear with caution if you have rounder facial features or a softer face shape.

......

Shrimps

Loewe

EDIT

BEAUTY

THE NEW PONY CLUB The ponytail is, without a doubt, the biggest hair story of A/W17 and there’s a lot of flexibility in how it can be worn this season. Slicked back and severe or softer and less structured, there are so many different ways to wear this simple, versatile style, as we saw at Fashion Week. At Loewe, ponytails were worn low at the neck and high on shine, with a clean centre-parting that was slicked down with gel and worn flat against the head. A similarly restrictive ponytail, with no room for movement, was created at Shrimps, where ponytails were worn tight and twisted to look like rope. Again, a wet-look wax spray created a harsh slicked-back look, with ponytails pinned down to avoid any ‘swish’ factor.

THE NEW NEON

Images © Versace

......

The bright and vibrant shades that dominated this summer will continue through to next season, but in a slightly toned-down way. A muted version of summer’s all-over highlighter-pen hues, A/W17’s palette will be more punky, but equally as daring, with cobalt blue and canary yellow predicted to take over from neon yellow and luminous green. Colour won’t be worn all over, as it was over summer. Instead, as seen at Versace, where the models wore brightly coloured extensions woven in to monotone locks, wearing single strips of brightly coloured hair can add just as much impact. Extensions are a great way to try bursts of extreme colour, without the commitment of a colour treatment and without the need for a pre-colour lightening. Temporary colour chalks and sprays are also a non-committal way to try out this fun trend. Keep the rest of the hair neutral, with a colour as close to your natural shade as possible.

No matter where you are in life, inspire and empower the women around you. Success is sweeter when shared.

Love the evolution of following an uneven path‌..cheek to cheek with passion, hand in hand with friendship.

Conquer and constantly reclaim your freedom with originality, boldness and persistence as your only weapons.

Master the rules in order to break all of them freely.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable. That’s how you break the plateau and reach that Next Level.

Always go too far, because that’s where you’ll find the truth.

Empowered women empower women.

It took me quite a long time to develop a voice and now that I have it, I am not going to be silent.
