FROM THE PUBLISHER Welcome to the Health & Beauty Issue, Alexandria! This time last May, the cover of our annual Health & Beauty Issue looked very different. The 2020 vision was to celebrate our local health & beauty professionals by inviting them to participate in a "Vanity Fair" style photoshoot. Unfortunately, social distancing would make this impossible. And so, we got a little creative. Using a polaroid camera, we were still able to put them all on the cover together...despite the challenges arising from the health crisis. (Check out our past issues at www.issuu.com/vipalxmag) Nothing was going to stop us from championing these individuals - the men and women who exemplified what it meant to be responsible members of our community as they forged the path to a safer and brighter future beyond the pandemic. Thanks to them, and all of you, we are nearing that place. And I don't know about you all, but here at VIP, we could not be more excited to see where the next year takes us! We hope you enjoy this year's Health & Beauty Issue, featuring Dr. David Weintritt of the National Breast Center Foundation. We hope that his story inspires us all to stop thinking pink during October alone, but carry the awareness and hope with us throughout the year. Until next month, Alexandria! Stay healthy, watch where you step for cicadas and get ready to party with VIP all summer long!

ALL ABOUT HIIT H I G H - I N T E N S I T Y I N T E R VA L T R A I N I N G I N A L E X A N D R I A Story by Jorge Martinez | Photography Courtesy of Get Fit Studio

As much as we want to wake up each morning and exercise – whether it’s hitting the gym, going out for a run or a walk, or biking – the insanely busy lives we lead often get in the way. Add to that the nationwide lockdowns resulting from the COVID pandemic and you have a recipe for unachieved personal fitness goals. In a world where we have less time to do the things we want, trying to squeeze in a workout can be a challenge.

They know that many of us can’t spend two hours at the gym hitting the weights or doing cardio exercises. Lucky for us, we don't need to carve out hours per day to get fit. Carlo is a proponent and instructor of high-intensity interval training, or HIIT. This growing trend promises the best workout in the least amount of time. Last year, fitness professionals voted HIIT one of the top fitness trends in the country.

Carlo Pascasio and his wife Ann own and operate Get Fit Studio in Old Town Alexandria. They are also parents to two young children, so they can relate to the pressures of juggling their professional and personal lives.

So, what is HITT? It is a training technique in which you give a one hundred percent, all-out effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise. This is followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. This type of training

This type of high-intensity training increases your metabolic rate and can give you a metabolism boost for up to two days after a routine. You will be burning fat even after you’ve left a session at Get Fit Studio. Other benefits include burning more calories and fat (but not muscle) and improving your overall endurance and stamina. HIIT practitioners are more likely to stick to these workouts because they are versatile and only require thirty minutes or less to do them. This will allow you more time to take care of your many other responsibilities. If you are curious about HIIT training and its health benefits or want to give it a try, there’s no better place than Get Fit Studio, located at 277 S. Washington Street in Alexandria. Whether you are a new client or a regular, Carlo and Ann offer a complimentary fitness assessment to better understand your fitness level, talk about personal goals, and come up with a customized plan to get you there – either in one-on-one or group sessions. gets and keeps your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time. The majority of HIIT workouts simply use your body weight since the goal is to get your heart rate up and keeping it there. High knees, fast feet, or anything like jumping lunges works well at getting your heart rate up fast.

Investing in your personal fitness will pay dividends in leaps and bounds. Say yes to HIIT, marvel at the results, and enjoy a healthier you! To learn more, visit www.getfitstudiova.com

A New Paradigm of Healers: The Mystic Chics Story by Sheila Townsend | Photography by Brenda Tate Portraits

Although their name may sound like a rockin’ fun, contemporary music group, these three powerful energy healers and family members rock a different vibe that speaks to the modern mystic in all of us. Sisters Audrey and Wendy, together with their aunt, Mary, collectively bring decades of professional experience in the realms of energy healing, education, spiritual business practices, sound healing, movement therapy, and more. According to the Oxford Language Dictionary, the noun "mystic" is defined as “a person who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect." These Mystic Chics are certainly examples of that definition as they bring about and embody the eternal truth of humanity’s loving divine essence.

22 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

While many people may struggle to make sense of the world right now, some even feeling as though they are drowning in a sea of information while simultaneously starved for wisdom, these three unique women offer solace with a slice of self-empowerment. Many people are navigating huge life changes right now, often feeling powerless over their jobs, their families, even their own bodies. The deep cleaning and subsequent inner awareness that recipients of an energy session feel are the depth and breadth that provides the alignment needed to regain confidence, health, and clarity. With a tagline like “a new genre of being,” these women certainly intrigue. Radiant smiles and youthful beauty make it hard to guess ages and easy to see that this trio

is practicing what they preach. What the Mystic Chics do is a bit outside the box of your weekly yoga session and deeper (far more dimensional) than typical talk therapy. All three bring their own life experiences and have received numerous grateful testimonials regarding their work. The fact that they are all from the same family leaves many shaking their heads in wonder. Audrey, celebrating her 11th successful year at her energy healing business in the Berkshires of MA called Awaken with Audrey, has sensed energy her entire life, tapping into strangers’ experiences and emotions since she was a young child. Mary, a former performing arts director and teacher at Flint Hill School here in VA, is a talented, life-long musician and a sober advocate since 2015. Wendy, also a former educator (12th-grade Literature & Composition), brings yoga certification to the mix. All three love music and regularly incorporate it for its strengths in integrating new energy into the body. As part of their recent union, the Chics have also taken to writing and composing some original works designed to activate and promote self-awareness. As these unusual times have prompted many to explore new topics and shift priorities, gaining a deeper sense of self can create a more stable foundation from which to navigate the future. A typical session with the Chics can zero in on a past trauma that may cause certain

patterns of behavior resulting in self-sabotage. Disease or "dis-ease", is often rooted in distress, sometimes as far back as childhood. Wendy offers, “Every emotion seeks expression.” People can’t express every emotion they feel at the moment they feel it, whether walking down the street or in a meeting. However, given the connection between mental/emotional stress and dis-ease, raising personal awareness is invaluable to helping the body achieve its innate optimal health. Raising awareness and becoming more conscious are not all fun and games. Excavating and getting to the root of any current problem is hard work. It takes commitment and authenticity. Audrey can often be heard saying, “No feeling; No healing.” To quote the Mystic Chic's original song Awaken the Mystery, “Don’t try to escape, really feel that pain. It cracks you open. It provides the gain. All we have is now, so be brave and let love through. Honor yourself and learn to be true.” Life is the ultimate DIY project. Living with grace and ease will yield tremendous and truly healthy results. According to Mary, “All of us are seeking to embody love. It truly is the essence of who we are.” Times such as these show us ourselves. May you gaze into the mirror and see your own inner mystic. Find The Mystic Chics online at www.themysticchics.com

Understanding Fat How to Freeze It Featuring Cool Contours | Story & Photography by Jorge Martinez

For most of us, body fat is a sensitive topic. It is something we agonize over and try to reduce through various means, including exercise. We so often spend countless hours, and a whole lot of money, trying different diets and exercise regimens to get rid of our unhealthy fat. Human bodies have two different types of fats – subcutaneous fat (visible under the skin) and visceral fat (which surrounds a person’s organs and is associated with different health risks). The distribution of fat throughout your body is determined by factors such as genes, caloric intake, and gender. The total number of fat cells in your body stays the same throughout your life. For example, if your body is predisposed to hold more fat cells in a specific area of your body, say your stomach, then you are more likely to have more fat in this area your entire life. While diet and exercise can increase or decrease the size, you cannot lose fat cells completely. Also, a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study found that the body’s ability to shrink subcutaneous fat decreases with age. So, if time is not our friend when trying to get rid of the last bits of stubborn fat, what other options are available? If you’ve tried every workout and diet plan available without seeing the results you want, then a non-invasive fat removal treatment can give you the results you want.

skin. The procedure rapidly gained popularity throughout the United States after receiving Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2010. CoolSculpting® targets diet and exercise-resistant fat by freezing these cells, which then flush out of the body over the course of a few months. It does not use needles, leaves scarring, and once the fat cells are gone, they are gone for good.

The hottest trend in body sculpting is freezing fat – or cryolipolysis, in medical terms. Cool Contours, owned by Jennifer Kim, focuses on this non-invasive, non-surgical procedure using the CoolSculpting® system, a device designed to effectively remove fat cells from beneath the

The Two Sides Of Pandemic Fashion Story by Christina Calloway The sun is shining longer into the days and sidewalks are lined with bursting spots of floral color signifying nature’s announcement that spring is here! With that announcement comes the need to step outside to experience it and as our community slowly opens up to our new normal a mask may not be the only thing you’re concerned about wearing. The ongoing pandemic has changed the fashion industry and as such, our own ideas about our personal style. Sheltering in place forced us into the depths of comfort and stepping outside in an outfit is taking on a whole new meaning with renewed effort. Some women are choosing to lean into a more relaxed style and beauty routine and some women are on the other end of the spectrum fully encouraged to

28 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

get back to glam! Embrace your post-COVID style in confidence with some style tips to help you make the most of whatever end of the spectrum you choose.

ONE: COMFORT IS THE NEW BLACK If you are temporarily committing to team sweat and yoga pants forever, you can still maintain that comfort and look stylish while doing so. Brands are now focusing on luxe loungewear pieces that can withstand constant wear so there is no shortage of options to choose from. Show your style by choosing leisurewear in fun prints and playful colors that you can mix and match for different looks. Invest in oversized denim and cotton or linen shirts as a

modified “blazer” that you can throw on over a matching sports bra and leggings. If you’re taking your loungewear outside don’t forget the accessories! A chunky necklace or mask chain pairs well with an oversized sweatshirt and adding a pair of cool sandals or sneakers transforms those sweats from comfy to chic!

2: A PANDEMIC CAN'T STOP THE SHOW If you are ready to wear those clothes that have been sitting in your closet for a year and break out those boxes of online shopping purchases, think color and volume! Stand out with bold prints and colors on full maxi skirts or tops with voluminous sleeves. Pair your mask collection with stylish mask chains to match your outfit and convert into necklaces or bracelets. Knits are now a major thing so instead of loose pants and tops choose knitwear that is a little more clingy in different styles like a midi dress that highlights your form and even those few pounds you may have gained during quarantine. This is also a great time to support emerging designers and small boutiques that may be offering fashion-forward pieces that are unique from mainstream trends. Christina Calloway is an intellectual property attorney, writer, and digital content creator of sharpandsound. com focusing on local lifestyle and style inspiration. Some of you reading this are familiar with the gutwrenching experience of feeling a lump in your breast, and some have even had a lump confirmed as a diagnosis of breast cancer. But imagine feeling that lump and having no idea where to turn or what to do. No options for screening, proper diagnosis or treatment if needed. No medical insurance or financial means to afford the proper help and care. Even women (and men) with insurance often don’t know where to start, who to trust, or may have run out of options. In all these scenarios, gut-wrenching turns into a tsunami of fear and the trajectory of a confirmed diagnosis feels inevitable. For many women in our own area, a local breast surgeon has stepped in to help turn the tide. Dr. David Weintritt lives, works, and raises his family in Alexandria, and does his best to support and give back to the community around him. Dr. Weintritt graduated from the University of Florida and trained in surgery at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. He then served as a surgeon in the United States Air Force as a member of the 89th medical group at Andrews AFB, MD. He loved the

people, the mission and the ability to serve and support his country, but a calling to establish and grow a practice led him back to civilian life and eventually Alexandria. Weintritt, now a faculty member of the George Washington University department of surgery and director of Inova Mt. Vernon breast program, makes the short walk from his home in Old Town to his practice, the National Breast Center, usually wearing surgical scrubs in his favorite colors of Florida Gator and Air Force blue. When he’s not in Alexandria, Weintritt may be traveling to share his skills, talents and knowledge. In 2019, he was invited to India to lecture and perform new surgical techniques in three major cities including the main teaching hospital in Delhi. He consults and lectures on new procedures and developments in the treatment of breast cancer. He recently led a clinical trial in the US and Canada based on a protocol he developed for a new technique in breast cancer surgery. He was invited to participate in a global health summit at the United Nations in NYC in 2017. During the COVID pandemic and its imposed isolation, he has participated with surgeons from India, Australia, and Singapore in webinars for

physicians from 40 countries around the world. Despite his credentials, thriving practice, and busy schedule, Dr. Weintritt’s first priority, after his faith, family and friends, is to his patients. But not just the patients that he sees through his regular practice, but also patients that he strives to help care for through his foundation who may not otherwise have access to any care or treatment for breast cancer. He also makes a priority of providing time for speaking to local groups, businesses, community health centers and other medical practitioners, and is available for events involving his foundation or other supporting or partner organizations. The National Breast Center Foundation was started by Dr. Weintritt in 2014. Realizing the metropolitan Washington DC region ranked statistically amongst the highest in both incidence and mortality from breast cancer as well as having one of the highest rates of late-stage breast cancer, he felt motivated to address this crisis. Weintritt believed that education, access and technology were the answers, and made those three tenets the main mission of his foundation. It was time to turn awareness into action. After forming the foundation and establishing ways to improve screening, diagnosis, and treatment for breast cancer, he tapped former telecommunications

Since its inception, the foundation has grown rapidly and has been instrumental in providing free cancer services to the medically underserved community, helping mostly racial/ethnic women, including many without insurance or the financial means to pay, have access to the best possible care. Last year the National Breast Center Foundation also raised funds to help cover mammogram screenings for women who lost their jobs or insurance due to the COVID pandemic. Given the growing demographic diversity in Alexandria and the immigrant population that was responsible for 52% of the total growth in Alexandria between 2011 and 2016, NBCFoundation’s mission to provide education and nocost diagnostic exams is especially critical for the City of Alexandria. The core of NBCFoundation’s vision centers on the viewpoint that no one should be disadvantaged

from understanding breast health because of their insurance status, social position or any other defined circumstances. NBCFoundation’s objective is to improve diagnostic evaluation for underinsured women at no

cost since the reduction of time between symptoms and diagnostic evaluation for women who have an abnormal finding is critical. The National Breast Center Foundation is able to directly assist these women with any necessary follow-up care, including providing diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and even surgery. Another priority Dr. Weintritt focused on with the creation of the foundation was bringing a breast cancer walk back to Alexandria. Years ago, a similar walk, organized by the City of Alexandria, had ceased to exist leaving a void. The benefit of gathering to celebrate, commemorate, or dedicate is physically and emotionally important to a community of individuals and their families impacted by cancer. Weintritt knew that it was an important event for not only his patients but survivors and their loved ones throughout our area. Those currently diagnosed and fighting the disease were grateful for an event where they felt the love and support of friends, family, and those who battled before them. And for those deceased from breast cancer, their voices continue to be heard and their supporters can participate in an effort to not have others share the same fate. In 2016, the National Breast Center Foundation held its first Walk to Bust Cancer at Fort Hunt Park. Several

hundred people came out for a powerful day that featured something for all ages—a DJ, a mindfulness meditation, speakers, exercise warm-ups and yoga cooldowns, moon bounce for kids, etc. Since then, the walk has grown to hosting over 800 people and annually raising over $100,000 for the battle against breast cancer. Last year’s Walk to Bust Cancer, like so many other events, had to be virtual and featured smaller, satellite walks in various neighborhoods and communities. The foundation also brought the Angel Wing Challenge to our area, which VIP Alexandria Magazine featured in its November 2020 issue. Other main fundraising events for the foundation include participating in ACT for Alexandria’s Spring to ACTion 24-hour online giving campaign and the Swing to Bust Cancer Golf and Tennis Tournament. Like so many others, NBCF is seeking out safe and creative ways to connect and raise funds during these difficult times brought on by COVID-19. During the initial peak of facility closure from COVID-19, routine mammograms were stopped, and for each month, that meant the possibility of up to 30,000 women in the US with a delayed or missed breast cancer diagnosis. Weintritt’s foundation has emphasized that while many aspects of our lives were put on hold, cancer does not stop, and we must continue to help a rapidly

growing list of women and men who need our help because of the pandemic. Many of the patients Weintritt’s foundation serves are high-risk, with an extensive family history of the disease or currently exhibiting symptoms but don’t know where to turn for help. The foundation’s outreach into the community is also working to include African American/African immigrant women (16% of Alexandria’s immigrant population is Ethiopian) via its strong presence and partnerships with other non-profits. While the foundation has no geographic boundaries and is open to helping all who qualify, it has formed a strong partnership with Nueva Vida, a non-profit in Alexandria which helps the Latino community with cancer. Astrid Jimenez, Executive Director of Nueva Vida, presented Dr. Weintritt with the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation Health Care Service Award at the 2019 Walk to Bust Cancer.

“Dr. Weintritt has been a Godsend to our organization. He treats each patient with the same amount of caring, compassion and kindness, regardless of their background or ability to pay.” - Astrid Jimenez The foundation also works closely with other organizations, such as We Will Survive Cancer, with whom they partner to provide Christmas gifts for children of cancer patients, and the Tigerlily Foundation, of which Dr. Weintritt is a member of the Medical Advisory Board. NBCF Executive Director Martha Carucci was also recently named to the Executive Committee of Tigerlily’s Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance, striving to end the disparities among minorities with metastatic breast cancer. Among Dr. Weintritt’s remarkable qualities is his humility. Often when asked about his foundation or to share some of the success stories, he gets emotional and calls on others, like Carucci or board members, to share them. He humbly says that they do the hard work of going out in the community and spreading the word, doing the footwork and finding the women who need our help and that his part is easy. If you consider saving lives easy. Perhaps the most touching success story is that of patient Aleseia Saunders, who was diagnosed at the age of 33 with breast cancer. Saunders, an African American woman with no family history of breast cancer and otherwise healthy, was diagnosed just two weeks

36 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

after learning that she was pregnant with her first child. She was told by her oncologist that she would have to terminate the pregnancy to undergo treatment for her cancer that included chemotherapy and radiation. A woman of faith, Saunders prayed for guidance and was fortunate to learn about Dr. Weintritt and his foundation. Weintritt had just come from a conference where he learned about a type of genomic testing called Mammaprint, which analyzes the DNA of a patient’s cancer, and in Saunders’ case, showed that her cancer, while invasive, lacked many of the genes associated with

spread, resulting in a very low risk of her cancer spreading, allowing carefully timed treatment of her cancer without having to terminate the pregnancy. Aleseia had a beautiful baby girl, who immediately started kicking and cooing during the first follow-up appointment with Weintritt because she recognized his voice from all the time they had spent discussing her care. Today, Aleseia Saunders is not only a breast cancer survivor, but she is also a thriver with three beautiful children and is eternally grateful to Weintritt. Aleseia is an active spokesperson for the foundation and works hard to help other women as they battle breast cancer. Weintritt often fits foundation patients in during his lunch break, after his long days of clinic or surgery, or adds Saturday office hours to accommodate them. One Nueva Vida patient was added to the schedule immediately because of a growing and painful mass. While she feared that she had breast cancer, Weintritt was able to diagnose her with a rare type of infection and when she returned for a visit after completing her treatment, her 9-year-old daughter pulled out a crumpled dollar bill from her pocket and wanted to give it to Weintritt as thanks for giving her mom back to her family. “I’ll never stop being amazed at how much some people struggle yet how much gratitude they still have. I’ve been so grateful for the people that have been brought into my life. I try to

share with my children the importance of giving back and helping others” he says. The National Breast Center Foundation is the only 501 (c) (3) organization that has the capability to directly assist uninsured/underserved women in Alexandria with breast abnormalities including any necessary follow-up care, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and even surgery at no cost. As such, it has built a strong foundation in the community with expertise in fundraising and developing partnerships to sustain community development. Story by Brooke Lauren | Photography Courtesy of Salon deZEN Your hair is the crown that you never take off and therefore investing in it is essential. Salon deZEN has been offering Babe® Hair Extensions for your crown for over five-plus years and they are here to tell you everything you need to know about obtaining instant gratification in voluminous, luscious hair. Babe® Hair Extensions are made from 100% ethically sourced human Remy hair. When you choose to get hair extensions, you get a complimentary consultation at Salon DeZen to discuss all of your hair goals, questions and any concerns you may have. This is where you decide which technique will work best for your hair and leave with a care sheet that explains everything you need to know and how to care for your hair at home. Let’s go over everything that is offered so that you know what to expect before you even walk through the door. KERATIN FUSION Keratin Fusion extensions are one of the most traditional ways to install hair extensions. This is also commonly known as the “glue” method, also called “fusion” extensions. They do not use glue but are amazingly effective at taking a hold of the hair shaft to give you longlasting extensions. They are seemingly unnoticeable when complete and will flow as even as your own hair. They are also very manageable once in as long as you follow the care sheet that the salon will send you home with. TAPE-IN Tape-in extensions use medical-grade tape to apply the extensions. This creates a practically unbreakable bond

between you and the extensions. They also apply easily and cause no damage to your natural hair. Also, if you are on a time crunch, tape-in extensions are some of the fastest to apply. I-TIP FLAT BEAD No heat, no glue application makes I-Tip Flat Bead extensions create an easy healthy way to add extensions to any hair. The flat shape of the bead allows for a wide base leaving more coverage for your hair. They leave flexibility for hairstyling and hold very well for all hair types. HAND TIED AND MACHINE TIED SEW-IN This involves wefts being sewn into the hair. Machine weft means that the hair is sewn together using a machine. The lining of the machine weft is thicker than hand-tied which gives a thicker extension if you are looking for more volume in your hair. Hand Tied weft is hair that is sewn together by hand. This creates a thinner lining giving a more natural look. BEADED WEFT Beaded Weft is the celebrity extension secret seen on the runway on actresses such as Kate Hudson. Beaded Wefts is when your extensions are attached to your hair with silicone beading rather than glue, heat or tape. This is one of the fastest and easiest ways to get extensions in your hair. HIT N MOVE

ALEXANDRIA ENTREPRENEURS PROMOTE THE BENEFITS OF BOXING

Story by Andrew Gates

42 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

“With this machine, anyone can get in shape without getting in the ring,” says Ozzie Akcakaya, co-founder of Hit N Move Boxing. This global company developed its grassroots right here in Alexandria but has already expanded to Canada, United Kingdom, and Italy. Married couple Ozzie and Alaina Akcakaya created and invested in Hit N Move so anyone could learn self-defense at home thanks to a new single-person alternative to the typical two-person boxing workout experience. The Boxing Reflex Trainer does not look like a traditional punching bag, but that’s because it’s not meant to be. With multiple target points, one of the device’s key distinctions is its spinning bar with a 26-inch arm meant to simulate an actual opponent’s reach and reaction time. With this new invention, Ozzie hopes to spread boxing to a wider audience of people than ever before. He is confident that he can do it, citing not only his invention, but also the many benefits of boxing that include muscle development, stress relief, bone development, and cardio.

MUSCLE DEVELOPMENT When most of us think of boxing, we tend to think of the strength it builds in the arms. After all, thrusting your fists at a target is sure to stimulate muscle development. That’s a given! But muscle development occurs in more than just the arms. It can have great results for the core and shoulders too. To get the “windup” for your next punch or jab, the oblique muscles are key to providing the proper hips and trunk rotation. These same muscles will also be needed to slow you down and reestablish stability. In addition to the obliques, boxing also heavily relies on the Serratus Anterior (SA), one of the muscles responsible for the “sixpack.” As far as the shoulders, these are the connecting muscles that bring your chest and your arms together. The shoulders will be utilized at almost all times during any boxing workout.

STRESS RELIEF Like striking a pillow when we’re upset or squeezing a stress ball during a tough day, sometimes relieving physical tension can be therapeutic. The endorphin release can cleanse difficult thoughts or frustrations safely.

BONE DEVELOPMENT Like how a runner’s leg bones are strengthened by repeated impact on solid surfaces, a boxer’s arm and wrist bones are also strengthened due to the impact

With this machine, anyone can get in shape without getting in the ring. - Ozzie Akcakaya placed on them. Some doctors recommend boxing as a treatment for elderly osteoporosis patients.

CARDIO Like many other forms of exercise, boxing can play a major role on the cardiovascular system. Bouncing from foot to foot, keeping arms raised, striking, dodging (hitting and moving), it’s enough to tire you out before you realize it. Boxing utilizes every single muscle group – from bottom to top. Altogether, this means your lungs and heart will have to work hard to keep up. Boxing can sometimes rival road running for those looking for an intense form of cardio. Ozzie states, “Our goal was to develop the most innovative and high-quality boxing equipment to offer our athletes the most effective and realistic training experience." With his passion for boxing coupled with his personal training certifications (National Academy of Sports Medicine European and Register of Exercise Professionals), he succeeded in doing just that.

THE JOURNEY OF HOLISTIC WELLNESS Story by Mary A. Jackson, MSW, Supervisee in Clinical Social Work Brought to you by Healthy Minds Therapy

The word "wellness" is commonly defined as “the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.” The National Wellness Institute expands this definition by offering that wellness is “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” That makes sense, right? But did you know that there are actually eight dimensions of wellness and multiple areas that, together, create a balanced whole? These dimensions are emotional, physical, spiritual, social, intellectual, occupational, environmental, and financial. As a therapist in training, emotional health is my area of primary focus. However, when I assess and discuss wellness with clients, I do so from a holistic perspective that encompasses all of these areas, not just mental and emotional health. Why? Because from the holistic view of wellness, all areas are interconnected. For example, it might be difficult for a person to focus on occupational wellness if their physical wellness is compromised. Likewise, it may be challenging for a person to maintain emotional wellness if their financial wellness is not stable.

information to create goals based on your results. It is also important to remember you do not have to tackle this alone. If you are interested in working on your emotional wellness, talk to a therapist! If you want to improve your physical wellness, take a cooking class or join a group workout! Wellness is a lifelong journey, so try to keep the big picture in mind. Remember, your wellness is yours and you set the tone and pace based on your needs and lifestyle. For more information, please visit www.healthyminds-therapy.com

I also encourage people to consider wellness as an intentional and personalized process. There is no magic key to achieving holistic wellness. It requires commitment and effort, and what works for one person may not work for the next person. We all come with our unique set of circumstances that need to be considered. Tackling all of the wellness dimensions at once can be overwhelming, even for the most astute wellness pro. To help with this, try focusing on one dimension at a time. Complete a wellness assessment (free assessments can easily be found with a quick internet search) and use that

NATURE'S NIBBLES THE ANNE + CHRIS GABRIEL STORY

Story by Casey O’Connor | Photography Courtesy of Nature's Nibbles

52 • VIP ALEXANDRIA MAGAZINE

Two years ago, Nature’s Nibbles opened for business in the Hollin Hall shopping center and has been growing and giving back ever since. Nature’s Nibbles is a familyrun holistic mercantile, owned by Anne and Chris Gabriel. The Gabriel’s are long-time Alexandria locals and are committed to contributing to the community they love. The store is warm and welcoming and carries tons of health-conscious, locally sourced foods and beverages, as well as natural and non-toxic health and beauty products, from supplements to sunscreen. On top of being a one-stop-shop for healthy options for the family (including the pets!), Nature’s Nibbles has been supporting the community by partnering with local businesses and organizations, supporting start-ups, and helping out some important causes. When Anne and Chris decided to open up this second location of their natural pet food store, their goal was to provide the community with healthy choices, not just for their pets, but for people, too. They found the store location in 2019, while Anne was going through treatment for Stage 2 breast cancer. Following her diagnosis, Anne began researching ways to improve her and her family’s health, from inside and out. The Gabriel’s focused not only on improving their nutrition with natural foods and supplements but also on making intentional choices about beauty and health products to cut out toxic ingredients. As she healed from her treatment and began planning the new store with Chris, Anne knew she wanted to use the knowledge she had gained throughout her health journey to create a place where community members could be intentional in their shopping, as well.

have used the shop to provide a platform for some great causes. Customers can support local start-ups, like some that supply vegan and toxin-free body care. The shop supports local veterans by partnering with Arcadia Farm in Alexandria to host plant and flower pop-ups. Starting in June, Arcadia will also be running pop-up produce stands at the shop on Wednesday evenings. In addition to offering advice on supplements and care options, the Gabriel’s support local breast cancer patients and survivors by spending time raising money and advocating for the National Breast Center Foundation based in Alexandria. On top of all that, they also support some great animal rescue and adoption groups. What started as a pet food delivery service out of their house has blossomed into a vibrant community of loyal customers and friends for the Gabriel’s. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by, and don’t forget your reusable bags!

The selection at Nature’s Nibbles caters to a variety of dietary concerns. They carry vegan and gluten-free choices, and for the meateaters out there, the store has partnered with local Polyface Farms to provide pasture-raised, grass-fed meat. On top of the stellar food selection, they also carry a range of plant-based supplements, including high-quality, researchbased CBD products. The shop is frequented by other breast cancer survivors, who can count on advice for supplements, CBD use, and local care options from Anne and Chris. Aside from sharing their passion for health and wellness with the community, Anne and Chris

When Life Gives You Curves S I Z E I N C LU S I V E FAS H I O N I N A L E X A N D R I A Story by Brooke Lauren | Photography by Arielle Lewis Studios

Going into a department store when you fit a certain size can feel like a big sign is hanging over your head, and there literally is one. A big cardboard sign hangs above seven percent of department stores screaming plus size over racks of oversized cotton and clothes most often created to hide amazing shapes and curves. There must be another way! Thankfully, there is. Inclusive sizing is about finding great fashion that individualizes a person’s style no matter what the number reads on their tag. Fashion is about loving the clothing you're in and how it fits your absolutely wonderful body no matter how curvy you happen to be. When stores decide not to cater to women of certain sizes, they are missing out on everything that comes with expanding their demographic. By hosting events that show how fashion is for each and every size, we are beginning a conversation about how fashion is more than fabric. Fashion is an expression of self-confidence and love for who we are as individuals. Inclusive sizing is hitting the runways with women and even men demanding models that represent something real and relatable. Inclusive sizing is also hitting us locally

thanks to Brit Boss and influencer Dani Saunter, lovingly known as @blondeinthedistrict by her Instagram fans. They recently joined forces to host their very first Sip & Shop Fashion Pop-Up Event at Glynn Jones Salon, featuring an exclusive rack with accessories and clothing of all sizes by Brit Boss, all curated by Dani, herself! “I am excited that BritBoss reached out to me to co-host this awesome event that brought inclusive sizing to Old Town! These events are something we’d love to continue in the upcoming months as well to make fashion more attainable and inclusive locally!” Thankfully for the beautiful and curvy women of Alexandria, Brit Boss and Dani aren’t the only local fashion experts leading this charge. Twist Boutique’s owner, Kristen Moore, has been providing concierge consignment for women of all shapes and sizes since she opened her doors in 2017. “My love for consignment clothing and accessories has always been about unique finds, not necessarily the brand, that fit my style and wardrobe. The boutique carries a range of styles including vintage, wearable art, and of course classic clothing with a Twist. Their sizes range from 0 to 1X.

The world is changing, fashion is changing and the true definition of beauty will forever remain the same.

The community of Del Ray is also home to a boutique owner who speaks passionately on the topic of inclusive sizing regularly. Celeste DeWitt Crutchfield of Kiskadee, recently published an article in the Alexandria Stylebook entitled Size Matters Not, in which she shares with readers, “I’ve heard it time and time again – “I can’t wear that.” It’s true that not everyone can wear everything. For example, I don’t like the way I look in white jeans or shorts.” Celeste, like Dani and Kristen, want women to feel beautiful, confident and empowered in their clothing. This is why Kiskadee loves their Sanctuary line, which is available in sizes XXS through 3X. There really is something for everyone.

is about the individual depiction of someone’s personal style rather than a number stuck on an uncomfortable tag. After all, the world is changing, fashion is changing and the true definition of beauty will forever remain the same. Sophia Loren once said, “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful.” Truer words have never been spoken.
