12 NIGHTS OF FABULOUS STYLE

Story by Joi Dreams | Ward Avenue Style Parlor

After years of virtual holiday celebrations, some of us got used to wearing our fanciest tops with pajama bottoms on Zoom parties. Back outside and able to dress up again, we now might be asking, “What do I wear?” Dressing for holiday celebrations should be your style with pizzazz. Add bold colors, different textures and layers to create your head-turning look. The most important things to remember when getting dressed for any event, be it the Kennedy Honors or the family holiday, is to be comfortable, dress for your shape and impress yourself first. To keep with the season, here are 12 Nights of Fabulous Dressing Tips. You will learn to embrace your inner fashionista, learn what your style is and be more confident wearing new looks.

1. ADD COLOR TO YOUR LOOKS

If you are attending a black tie event, add a bold statement with color. Women, you can carry a studded clutch purse with bold colors or go all the way like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and add a show-stopping heel in silver, red or covered with studs. Men, never underestimate the fashion prowess of a fantastic pocket square with a tuxedo or black tailored suit. Matching it with your bow tie or tie makes a fashionable statement when you are limited to all-black. Incorporating bright colors such as red, yellow, green, gold and silver will make any look pop. Don’t be afraid of bright colors. When you add bright colors to your favorite color, you will be more comfortable with your look. Accents may seem small, but can shine like a diamond along with your ensemble.

2. REMEMBER: IT'S COLD OUTSIDE.

Your outerwear is the first thing people will see. Leave the puffer at home. Opt for a classic wool trench, faux fur, leather/ faux leather long coat or a beautiful swing coat that keeps you warm while adding an extra sense of style. Women, add a belt to accent your waist to add an extra bit of fabulousness to your look. Men, a scarf tied and tucked into your coat adds a sense of style and elegance to your outerwear. Black is always in style when it comes to outerwear, but don’t be afraid of bright-colored coats; they add personality to your look.

3. LET YOUR INNER FASHIONISTA SHINE.

Sequin and sparkly fabrics are fabulous every day, but definitely during the holiday season. Don’t be afraid of sparkle. It can be the fairy dust that makes your holiday look shine. Sequin dresses are fabulous on every shape depending on the cut (always go with what looks good on your shape). Know what length works for you and go all in. Sequin skirts or jackets can really make your outfit shine. Also, fabrics with sparkly accents are fabulous and a great alternative to sequin. Be it a blazer, pants, vests, dress or skirts, sparkles in fabric can make an ensemble pop.

4. TAKE IT TO THE CLEANERS.

It doesn’t matter what you paid or how fabulous the piece is, if it doesn’t fit “you” well, it will not look good on you. Women and men, get your pieces tailored. You will feel more comfortable and look that much more amazing in your fabulous look.

5. PUT YOUR FOOT IN IT.

Footwear is like the cherry on top of the clothing sundae. If you have a good pair of shoes in your closet, but haven’t worn them since 2019, take them to the cobbler to get shined and resoled. When choosing your footwear, make sure they are comfortable. Most events require a lot of standing. Women, if you wear a flat, go bold! Let it be a bright color or have shine or jewels on it; make a statement while being comfortable. If you wear a heel, be mindful of the shape. Some ensembles look better with a pointed toe rather than a round or square. Men, black shoes are great, but depending on the color of your ensemble, step out and try different tones of brown, blue, grey, green etc. There are so many different variations of colors. Find one that works with your look. You will be surprised how a different shoe color will make the outfit. Also, choose the right shoe shape for your suit or pant leg opening. The wrong shoe shape can ruin an outfit.

6. FROM THE BOTTOM UP.

Most women wear a dress or skirt to holiday events, but a well-tailored pantsuit can turn every head. Even a bold wide leg pair of pants with a crisp white shirt can blow everyone's mind. Think out of the box. Do the opposite of what everyone expects you to do. Midi skirts can be a fantastic option if you choose the right cut for your shape, such as A-line, pleated, layered or a long pencil skirt. Men, the skinny cut is great, but straight leg and relaxed leg are great options; corduroy is making a comeback too. Don’t be shy to try different looks. It may be “your” look.

7. ALL IN THE FEEL.

Textures can make an outfit truly shine. Velvet, sequin, tweed, chiffon, silk, wool and other textures mixed and matched can create the show-stopping look you have been looking for. You will be pleasantly surprised how certain textures go so well with others.

8. PUT A SOCK ON IT.

While the outfit is the first thing people see, we must sit down at some point. That is when our socks and stockings

make an appearance. Don’t get all dressed up and put on the wrong foot covering for the look. Women, lace stockings and thigh highs are making a bold comeback. Decide if a sheer or opaque stocking or thigh high is the best choice for your look. Men, socks are important. The color and texture can make or break your look.

9. WHERE DO I PUT MY KEYS?

Daily, we usually walk around with everything but the kitchen sink in our bags and wallets, but when we are out with fancy people, we carry less. Women, a clutch is your friend. You can carry your essentials while still looking fantastic. Make sure it matches your shoes and know if you need a strap on it or if it is one that you can carry in your hand. Men, you should have a “going out wallet." This is a slim wallet that slides seamlessly into your blazer, pants or suit jacket without a bulge. You only need your essentials. JUST OPENED!

10. BLING OR NOT TO BLING.

Jewels can be the perfect accessory to any outfit when chosen well. Women, be mindful of the textures of the ensemble. You don’t want a heap of junky jewelry on top of a sequin dress; they will fight each other for the spotlight. Sometimes less is more, but sometimes you need more when the ensemble is subtle. Men, cufflinks are always in style.

11. GET THE ASSIGNMENT.

If the event calls for elegance, follow the instructions. Don’t dress down or wear the traditional teenager “job interview outfit” (khaki pants with a white shirt). There are places you can rent an ensemble; there are consignment shops and aftermarket brick and mortar or online stores. You have options. Follow the requirements. Pictures are forever now. Make your look memorable.

12. BE YOU, BUT WITH PIZZAZZ.

We all have that high school photo that shows how we tried the wrong new look that was totally outside our comfort zone. Learn from that mistake. Be fabulous within your comfort zone by adding color and texture to your personal style. Different is great when you feel like your best you. Have fun and be adventurous, but feel comfortable. If you do not like it, don’t wear it.

Visit Ward Avenue Style Parlor at 2101 Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, VA (located on the lower level of Joi Dreams Salon). Ward Avenue welcomes walk-ins for fashion donations and consultations for men and women.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY CAPITOL HILL CLOTHIERS

Capitol Hill Clothiers is a boutique custom suiting company catering to professionals in Washington, DC that need to be dressed a cut above the rest. They offer some of the highest quality suits in the nation for the highest caliber individuals. And by the way, they come to you! Dress to impress. Dress to earn. Dress to conquer.

Look at most homes and you’ll usually see more clothes in a woman’s closet than a man’s—with exceptions, of course. But face it! The majority of guys could probably get dressed with their eyes closed. So for all you men who may need a little help (or for those of you who don’t because you already know what you’re doing, but love a good cheat sheet), we offer a guide to what’s on trend in the men’s department for the upcoming year.

SUIT UP

All men need at least one suit, but not the boxy suits your dad wore. Nope. To be on-trend and stylish, go with an unconventional (but well-tailored, of course) suit. Hell, buy several if you look good in them and think you’ll get some use. Wearing a great suit will get you noticed. By unconventional, think patterned or in a color other than the traditional hues.

FIND YOUR PATTERN

Patterned knits are a great go-to to add visual interest in your everyday wardrobe. Find fun patterns that are small enough to be subtle if that’s more your speed, or go big and bold. There’s not a hard-and-fast rule about what’s right for

you, so have fun. Your socks shouldn’t be the only thing you wear that has a pattern. Try out a snug sweater or light-knit cardigan and pair it with a tee shirt underneath. In case you’re not familiar, straight-cut denim means that, when you take the leg of the jeans and fold them ankle up to the thigh, there’s absolutely no difference in size. Guys are all about comfort, and these are the ultimate comfort when it comes to pants. Just make sure they’re long enough to have a break above the top of your foot (i.e., the material that gathers at your ankle). And wave goodbye to your skinny jeans—at least, for the time being.

BE BOLD

Bold tees are a way to express yourself in fashion. You can embrace the trend in various ways. “Bold” can be color, pattern, logo or saying. Fashion rules are pretty wide open here, so go as bold as you want, how you want. These audacious pieces of clothing are a great way to enhance any outfit. Note, however, that the rest of your ensemble should be simple to let your tee do all the talking.

BELT IT OUT

To all of the men out there who are not a fan of the belt, this one is for you. Beltless trousers are making a comeback. Great in that they offer an uninterrupted silhouette, they’re

a stylish option for times when you want to look sharp and impeccably put together. They do, however, need to fit you well, so size is key to making these pants look good. Put the belt away and rejoice.

GET YOUR WEAVE ON

Woven loafers can be anything from semi-casual leather loafers to canvas loafers that have exploded in popularity of late much the way that Crocs did. Comfortable, versatile and conveniently lace-less, loafers are a must for any man’s closet. Just remember, the right shoe choice makes all the difference, so consider the overall look you’re going for. The more casual the outfit, the more casual your shoes can be.

TEXTURIZE

Textured linen is a textile that is both tactile and visually pleasing. You can find pretty much anything your heart desires in textured linen these days (pants, shorts, shirts, suits), so experiment to see what looks right for you and what makes you happy when you look in the mirror. Linen can be a great foundational fabric or worn alone. The versatility makes it perfect for most occasions.

THINK BIG

Oversized outerwear isn’t a thing of the past anymore. Much like many trends, it’s made a comeback in a big way (pun intended), so embrace it. If it looks like you stole it from a much larger person’s closet, you’re doing it right. Comfort is key here, as the outsized pieces give you much more room to live and move in—and who doesn’t love that?

In an age when most people are sporting smart watches, paint a bold stripe and wear one that can’t tell you what you ate for breakfast yesterday. Find analog watches with fun faces, bold bands, alternative materials, unique colors, interesting shapes or unexpected sizing. People will notice it and you’ll enjoy having at least one thing in your life that isn’t uploading information to the cloud.

BAG THAT

Leather bags are an on-trend way to keep everything you need for your day, right where you need it. From messenger bags and satchels to slings and tablet-sized cross-body bags, carry your essentials (and, of course, a few not-so-essentials) with you wherever you go. Your pockets may get less use, but that wallet-shaped outline that you’ve worn in the back seat of your jeans will be but a distant memory of what once was.

GET THE BOOT

Boot season shouldn’t just be a girl thing. Men’s dress boots are a great alternative to traditional dress shoes and a great nod to yesteryear. Wear them with trousers or jeans and cuff the ankle to show off your fancy footwear. You’ll find options in leather, suede, even wool, with laces and without as well as various heel heights and those that are completely flat, in a rainbow of colors that make them both serviceable and stylish. Capitol Hill Clothiers makes sure our customers feel valued. What’s more valuable than free custom clothing? With your first suit order, you’ll also receive a free custom shirt. Easy as that! I firmly believe that you don’t need to be any sort of skilled wine taster to appreciate great wine. Describing the nuances of what you are tasting is definitely a learned skill, but quality and profundity announce themselves quite apparently. The great wines stand up and seize you, so long as you are paying at least half attention. I’ve seen it time and again serving wine to restaurant patrons and just drinking it with friends (when we are so lucky). One of the wines I frequently turn to when I need to make an impression isn’t a Cabernet Sauvignonbased wine from Bordeaux or Napa, or Pinot Noir from Burgundy, though there is no shortage of truly great wines that hail from those places. No, for me, it’s the Bandol Rouge of Domaine Tempier.

Bandol is the leading appellation of Provence in terms of wine quality with approximately 4,000 acres of vineyards lining the hills surrounding the port city of the same name, located roughly 35 miles southeast of Marseille. While it only received appellation status in 1941, thanks in very large measure to Lucien Peyraud of Domaine Tempier, there are official decrees regulating wine production in the area that date back to the Middle Ages. The vineyards are typically planted on stone terraces, known locally as restanques, in the hills surrounding the town, which form a south-facing amphitheater. Soils are mainly clay limestone with some sand, though they vary in the content of each. The various possible combinations of elevation and soil can yield drastic differences in the wines. Mourvèdre is the chief grape of the appellation, where it is required to be between 50-95% of the blend for reds. It likely arrived in the 1500s from Spain, where it is known as Monastrell. Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety with small berries and low acid. It enjoys the long hot growing season Bandol offers. Even in the face of climate change, harvest dates are still in late September. It also has notoriously low yields. “One vine, one bottle” is a common saying among growers in the area. Domaine Tempier’s history dates at least as far back as 1834, but its present reputation was built by Lucien and Lulu Peyraud, who inherited the estate from Lulu’s family in 1936. Between the phylloxera epidemic in the late 1800s, war and the Great Depression, much of the region’s Mourvèdre plantings were ripped out in favor of higher yielding, more profitable varieties. Having had access to Domaine Tempier’s pre-phylloxera Mourvèdre based wines, however, Lucien

knew the region’s potential and set about re-establishing the variety, becoming president of the Bandol appellation in 1945. Today, the Domaine is overseen by a board of Peyrauds and managed by Daniel Ravier and the wines are some of the most sought-after (and increasingly hard to get) in the appellation. The wine I’d like to recommend to you today is the 2020 Domaine Tempier La Migoua ($83). La Migoua is one of the Domaine’s rare single vineyard bottlings. La Migoua is a series of scattered parcels surrounded by garrigue and

scrubland at about 300 meters of elevation in the hills of Beausset Vieux. For our purposes, it is also the cuvée with the least amount of Mourvèdre—roughly 50%, balanced by 25% Cinsault, 20% Grenache and 5% Syrah—which makes it the most accessible of their single vineyard wines in youth. To match Mourvèdre’s notes of bold black fruits, leather, tobacco and earth, I’d recommend something equally hearty, like a leg of lamb. The accompanying recipe hails from Lulu's Provençal Table, a master class in the cuisine of the region compiled via a series of interviews with Lulu Peyraud conducted by none other than Richard Olney. This match is just the thing for your holiday table. Give the wine at least an hour or two in a decanter to open up, then enjoy. Other recommendations: 2013 Terre Rouge Mourvèdre ($33), 2016 Domaine Maubernard Bandol Rouge ($37), 2020 Domaine Tempier Cuvée Classique ($60) and 2020 Domaine Tempier La Tourtine ($83).

RECIPE: LEG OF LAMB

INGREDIENTS

• 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 whole leg of lamb, 5 1/2 to 6 pounds, bone-in • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 large yellow onion, chopped • 1 cup peeled, seeded and chopped tomatoes, fresh or canned • 24 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 5 sprigs of fresh thyme • 1 cup dry white wine, plus more as necessary • 1 cup imported black olives, such as Niçoise

TO PREPARE

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Use a roasting pan large enough to hold the lamb, preferably with a rack and low sides to allow for browning. Toss the onion with the olive oil and add to the bottom of the pan. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, then pour the wine over the meat and continue roasting. Baste occasionally with pan juices. 15 minutes later, add the thyme, tomatoes and olives to the pan. Add more wine or water as needed if the pan is drying out. Cook, again basting occasionally with the pan juices, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the coolest section of lamb registers 125° to 130° F for mediumrare or 130° to 135° F for medium, approximately an hour and 30 minutes or 12 to 15 minutes per pound. Remove the lamb from the pan, cover with foil and let rest for 10 minutes. Remove and discard the thyme. To serve, slice the lamb and place it on a platter. Spoon the sauce over the lamb. Serve immediately, passing the remaining sauce.

“Makeup fulfills my creative side,” says Corsino. “What I really love is giving clients an extra boost of confidence by making them feel beautiful. So what are ? It is not microblading!...

Yes, they both are forms of Permanent Makeup but are applied to the skin very differently. Unlike Microblading, the Powder Brow process creates a soft, powder-filled brow which can look very natural or can be customized to create a makeup effect. Best of all, you don’t have to draw your brows in every day!
